      5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2000-09-28

This book, which chronicles the struggles and the triumphs experienced by the organziers of fashion shows to benefit AIDS, makes a wonderful addition to any library. The profiles of the famous people the author worked with (especially Elizabeth Montgomery) as well as the heroic victims of this devastating disease will make you laugh, cry and, best of all HOPE. One of the best books of it's kind ever written!

5 out of 5 stars Stars, fashion, gossip, laughter, and tears........1999-10-16

I never got to go to the star studded fashion show extraveganza'a that Mr. Anketell writes about, but now I can via his wonderful book, and be both in the audience AND backstage. Out of tragedy and tears came beauty and joy, and all that is in between, and Mr. Anketell tells it all with humor, pathos, and genuine affection. Kudos! Brava! Encore! A perfect gift.

            Book Description

Federico Fellini as Auteur: Seven Aspects of His Films offers a comprehensive auteurist study of the renowned Italian director. Film scholar John C. Stubbs dispenses with a traditional film-career review of the man and instead organizes his discussion of Fellini’s films into seven categories. The volume focuses retrospectively on the key elements of the filmmaker’s style, the influence of Carl Jung and dreams, the autobiographical depiction of childhood and adolescence, the portrait of the artist, the filmmaker’s working relationship with his wife, Fellini’s comic strategies, and his adaptation of works by others. Each of the aspects is fully contextualized.

The study explores Fellini’s narrative form and visual presentation, includes materials from his dream notebooks and dream-related film scenes, and examines the fictionalized autobiography, contending that the filmmaker created an “autobiographical legend” of himself and then filmed the legend. Drawing on a wide range of materials, including documents written in Italian and largely unavailable to English-language scholars, Stubbs details the collaborative relationship Fellini had with his wife, actress Giulietta Masina. He focuses on the creative tension between director and actress, which contributed to the effective portrayal of Masina’s two predominant characters, the waif and the betrayed wife.

Stubbs also outlines comic strategies in the Fellini films, concentrating on the later comedies about groups, such as clowns, orchestra members, and opera singers. He conversely addresses that which is tragic, suggesting that in adapting the work of others Fellini was drawn to writers who dealt with decadence and madness. These discussions and a focus on Fellini’s Casanova and The Voice of the Moon comprise a valedictory essay on the Fellini films.

Federico Fellini as Auteur, which includes sixteen illustrations, is unburdened by jargon and accessible to film scholars and students of all levels. This examination of the critical elements in Fellini films offers a notable contribution to a better understanding of the artistry that is uniquely Fellini.

            4 out of 5 stars I know Xenakis a little better now.......2006-07-25

Xenakis used a number of unorthodox methods in his compositions. In particular he used quite a bit of mathematics ranging from statistics and elementary set theory to Markov chains and number theory. Incredibly, when Xenakis talks about these in his own words he manages to make these approaches seem quite sane and even justified. Xenakis is under no illusion that music is beautiful just because the underlying equations he uses are beautiful and he makes it clear that he's not simply a composer who abdicates responsibility for his composition to an automatic procedure.

It's also interesting to get a bit of background on his relation ship with Le Corbusier, Messiaen and others.

5 out of 5 stars Xenakis is quite extraordinary shaper of raw structures.......1999-05-14

It seems interviews is some type of postmodernist genre, we seem to have more of them. Well they are the most direct form of learning the complexity of someones thought, and today with multi-dimensional expressions travelling in many directions, interviews help focus all these extranneous fields of thought. Xenakis is quite an interesting composer because he really starts music again. He says things like this during these interviews, how each work begins again. Varga is also quite competent in conversational interrogatories. This book is well organized as well ,touching all the highpoints from the early formative bleak years living as an exile in Paris to the dazzling success as European architect and thinker of the modern world. Xenakis is fascinating precisely because he brings much more than music to his music. He hates Mozart but loves Schubert, and loves the shape of things, cones, trapezoids which all influence his end-of-the-world-like musical structures more than a chord progression. There is also nice excerpts from his work you will never find in a music store today.

                Book Description

Each of these optical illusions is a masterpiece of colorful design, with visual tricks to confound the mind and please the eye. Just don’t trust anything you see at first glance, because it’s impossible to judge spatial relations, or even the subject of a picture, accurately. In some cases, the colors themselves deceive the eye, making objects seem larger, smaller, faster, or even better looking than they really are. Hold onto your hats—two fancy stovepipe hats, that is: are they taller than they are wide, wider than they are tall, or the same dimensions? Or try climbing the wild set of stairs: they’ll have you going in circles and in squares. There’s plenty of beautifully intriguing fun on these pages.

If Dilbert and Tom Peters ever attended the same party, they'd probably find themselves in opposite corners. The cynical cartoon character would have a hard time in Peters's upbeat, high-energy world of "Cool-Beyond-Belief." The Brand You50 is Peters's manifesto for today's knowledge workers. It joins his Reinventing Work series, which includes The Projects50 and The Professional Service Firm50.

In The Brand You50, Peters sees a new kind of corporate citizen who believes that surviving means not blending in but standing out. He believes that "90+ percent of White Collar Jobs will be totally reinvented/reconceived in the next decade" and that job security means developing marketable skills, making yourself distinct and memorable, and developing your network ability. His list-filled prescriptions cover everything; for example, "You are Your Rolodex I: BRAND YOU IS A TEAM" (no. 22), "Consider your 'product line'" (no. 25), "Work on your Optimism" (no. 35), "Sell. SELL. SELL!!!" (no. 47). While the book is overwhelming at times--its hyperactive typography pretty much shouts at you--any baby boomer thinking about his or her career will find much to consider. --Harry C. Edwards

                Book Description

Michael Goldhaber, writing in Wired, said, "If there is nothing very special about your work, no matter how hard you apply yourself you won't get noticed and that increasingly means you won't get paid much either. In times past you could be obscure yet secure -- now that's much harder."

Again: the white collar job as now configured is doomed. Soon. ("Downsizing" in the nineties will look like small change.) So what's the trick? There's only one: distinction. Or as we call it, turning yourself into a brand . . . Brand You.

A brand is nothing more than a sign of distinction. Right? Nike. Starbucks. Martha Stewart. The point (again): that's not the way we've thought about white collar workers--ourselves--over the past century. The "bureaucrat" on the finance staff is de facto faceless, plugging away, passing papers.

But now, in our view, she is born again, transformed from bureaucrat to the new star. She works in a professional service firm and works on projects that she'll be able to brag about years from now.

I call her/him the New American Professional, CEO of Me Inc. (even if Me Inc. is currently on someone's payroll) and, of course, of Brand You.

Step #1 in the model was the organization . . .a department turned into PSF 1.0.  Step #2 is the individual . . .reborn as Brand You.

In 50 essential points, Tom Peters shows how to be committed to your craft, choose the right projects, how to improve networking, why you need to think fun is cool, and why it's important to piss some people off. He will enable you to turn yourself into an important and distinctive commodity. In short, he will show you how to turn yourself into . . . Brand You.

See also the other 50List titles in the Reinventing Work series by Tom Peters -- The Project50 and The Professional Service Firm50 -- for additional information on how to make an impact in the professional world.

2 out of 5 stars This is not "how to" book.......2007-09-26

"Talent" by T.P. is better. This book consist of 50 main bullet points and possibly 6-700 sub bullets - all together a long list of nice things to think about but this is not a "how to" book as expected.

3 out of 5 stars BE your OWN BRAND!!!!!!!!.......2007-08-31

A lot of the advice within this book is sound: Be proactive. Sell yourself. Define yourself. Network. Take responsibility for your career success. As a junior professional, it's very important for someone like me to realise how these elements support and leverage one's actual capabilities in the workplace.

However the author seems hard pressed to develop these into 50 distinct points. It becomes repetitive, which is why I would recommend dipping into the book as opposed to reading it cover to cover.

The written style and tone becomes irritating. As other reviewers have noted, it's full of PHRASING like THIS!!!! HYPERBOLE!! INSPIRATIONAL CLICHES!! I wish instead of 5 word sentences the author had also offered more explanation and insight into the issues he raises.

4 out of 5 stars Some great ideas; in need of editing.......2007-08-28

Many, if not most, business books began their life as a set of PowerPoint charts that the creator presented to seminars, conferences and the like, and that were subsequently converted into book form. As a result, most business books are chock full of filler - anecdotes of questionable relevance, endless repetition, and other low-value material.

In contrast, "Brand You 50" eschews surplusage. It reads like a conference presentation, for better and worse. On the plus side, this book is a fast read, and it includes dozens of ideas for improving your performance, your skills and your marketability. Which ideas you choose to embrace and implement will depend on your job, your goals and your personality; this book provides a huge buffet of ideas from which to choose. "Brand You 50" has no filler at all, which I appreciated. On the minus side, the book is formatted horribly. Peters crows that he designed it himself. I appreciate the thought, but some editing of punctuation, font, and the like would have helped immensely. It literally reads like a transcript of a motivational speaker, complete with a plethora of exclamation points. Indeed, this may be the first book in the English language with more exclamation points than periods.

However, after you get past the awkward formatting, "Brand You 50" provides a wealth of practical ideas for building your personal brand. It's at least worth checking out from the library.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read, OK stuff, but not WOW!.......2007-08-09

Well, I read it in 4 hours... It's interesting, it does good to your self-esteem and contains fairly practical advice. However, I wouldn't consider it too seriously for crafting a new life course on the basis of its advice. It also needs significant updates where it refers to new media and the Internet.

                5 out of 5 stars Life Changing..........2007-04-01

If there ever was a book that changed my paradigm when I first read it, it was "The Brand You 50."

Ever since, I have promoted this book strongly in my classes, toward all my students. In fact, the first thing I always tell them is, "You are You, Inc. from today on. You don't work FOR any company, but you work WITH them. Change your views, and therwith, change your life.

So far, it has worked tremendously. I have received numerous notes of gratitude from those who previously felt trapped in their work situations. Tom Peters truly did an awesome job with this book.

I used many of the mindsets of Peters in my own works, most recently in "The Awakened Leader: One Simple Leadership Style That Works Every Time, Everywhere," and "Spirituality in the Workplace: What it is; Why it Matters; How to Make it Work for You" (the last one co-authored with Dr. Satinder Dhiman and Dr. Richard King).

It is unbelievable what a change in perspective can do for your self-esteem, drive, and visions. But having thought about it deeply, and having interviewed over 100 leaders since reading this book, I can attest that it's a great work.

Read it, and then read the books in which many of Peters' advises have been captured, "The Awakened Leader: One Simple Leadership Style That Works Every Time, Everywhere," and "Spirituality in the Workplace: What it is; Why it Matters; How to Make it Work for You."

5 out of 5 stars Death to Diabetes - Great Life Changing Book.......2007-10-11

I have Type 2 diabetes and following the diet and exercise plan put forward in this book is really helping me. It is obvious that the author DeWayne McCulley knows this subject well. His background in biochemical engineering provides credibility.

I bought the book a little over five weeks ago and was on several medications that were treating symptoms related to my poor diet and lack of exercise. After following the suggestions for diet and exercise from Mr. McCulley's book for just 5 weeks, I am off my blood pressure medication; my cholesterol medication has been reduced. My blood glucose levels are dropping and I have lost considerable weight. I feel much better.

The methods suggested in Death to Diabetes work. The ideas are stated so clearly that I was compelled to give it a try. The book can help you change your idea of what food can do for you. Now I view food not only as a source of pleasure but also as a tool to make my body healthier.

If you have Type 2 diabetes and want to get passed it, this book is just the tool you need!

5 out of 5 stars DEATH to Diabetes...NOT KIDDING!!! .......2007-10-05

I got this book for a relative and she loved it so much she got one for her doctor! Her doctor loves it too! Her glucose readings have been steadily returning to normal ranges and she is off oral diabetic meds and is no longer on daily insulin injections. All this within 6months of reeducating herself to the truth. This is truly DEATH to DIABETES!!! Follow it, dont question it, and see the results for yourself!!

5 out of 5 stars The bible on Diabetes.......2007-09-01

My husband has diabetes and up until recently it has been uncontrollable, so we've been reading book after book on the subject. When I purchased "Death to Diabetes", it was like none other in scope. McCulley's book is thorough and goes in depth on the cause, cure and prevention of this horrible disease. In addition, it is written from the perspective of someone who has suffered through, almost died from and then reversed the disease. You can throw out all the other books on diabetes. This is the one every diabetic should read.

5 out of 5 stars Death To Diabetes.......2007-08-31

A great book on how to manage, control and perhaps reverse type 2 diabetes. Mr. McCulley is extremely methodical and scientific in his analyses of the disease. He outlines the reasons for T2 and tells what he did to "cure" his diabetes thereby passing on his methods to the reader through his "Wellness" program. His background in biochemistry and medicine when relating to diabetes is expert. He is very well-informed and passes his tried and true methods of control (Stages 1-4) and ultimate "cure" (Stages 5 & 6) on to those who choose to follow his suggested approach through these 6 stages. I highly recommend this book to those who wish to be in super control and possibly rid themselves of this dread disease.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2007-08-13

Don't bother with this book and save your money for better things. Dr. Berstein's Diabetes Solution is by far the best book on managing diabetes. It is better written, more complete, and easier to understand.

                  Book Description

This is the first book to examine war and violence in Sri Lanka through the lens of cross-cultural studies on just-war tradition and theory. In a study that is textual, historical and anthropological, it is argued that the ongoing Sinhala-Tamil conflict is in actual practice often justified by a resort to religious stories that allow for war when Buddhism is in peril. Though Buddhism is commonly assumed to be a religion that never allows for war, this study suggests otherwise, thereby bringing Buddhism into the ethical dialogue on religion and war. Without a realistic consideration of just-war thinking in contemporary Sri Lanka, it will remain impossible to understand the power of religion there to create both peace and war.

3 out of 5 stars good entry level book.......2005-10-01

The 27 coauthors of this giant book chronicle the downside of globalization. They give a voice to the world's poor, those at the margins, those who are not benefiting from the greatest peacetime boom in history.

Although the developing countries carry 90 percent of the world's disease burden, they have access to only 10 percent of the resources that go to health. And, to compound matters, many of those sub-Saharan and Asian countries are overwhelmed by Aids and similar blights. There is a lot of preventable misery in the world.

This book works best when it describes those at the receiving end of that misery and our concomitant apathy. The authors begin with the photo of an impoverished child, who scrapes a living in a Guatemala garbage dump that is home to her, her family and thousands of other unfortunate people we will never meet. Because the dump is a cesspit of infectious air and water borne diseases, the pretty little girl will probably be dead before too long.

Nsanga, a 26 year-old Zairian mother of two, is already dead. When her family fell into debt, she resorted to prostitution to keep them alive. Now Aids - and the poverty that reduced her to renting out her body for 50 yen a time - has killed her and millions like her.

What is to be done? Well, we can blame the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the world's wealthiest people, Nike, Shell and other multinational companies - the usual suspects, in other words. That, at least, is what the authors do. And it is comforting that someone else besides ourselves, Fidel Castro and the authors are to blame.

It is also good to read that economic growth is not the miracle drug economists crack it up to be. Like steroids, growth has its considerable downsides and the authors are to be commended for giving us the stories of the casualties of globalization. They are to be commended for showing how the policies of the World Bank sparked the Rwanda genocide. The World Bank, the IMF and companies like Disney, Shell and Nike do have a case to answer.

But so too do Fidel Castro, Western Christians and Western liberals, the book's target audience. Any book that praises Cuba's health system runs the risk of losing all credibility. A tin-pot dictator who cannot even supply his people with bars of soap should not have his health policies put on a pedestal.

Nestlé's should be much more responsible in selling powdered milk to African mothers. The IMF and the World Bank should make some belated restitution to the people of Haiti for supporting the Duvalier kleptocracy. The mining companies, which gave the Navajo the highest cancer rates in the United States, should do something similar.

But what should the good guys do? It is interesting, for example, to note that, of the 26 countries with the highest percentage of smokers, only one, Japan, is not a developing country. More Colombians die today from diseases caused by American tobacco than do Americans from Colombian cocaine. The book has a large number of such disjointed facts. Ultimately, however, those facts and the economic preaching get in the way. This book, though very informative, only points the finger of blame; it does not really point a way to the future.

5 out of 5 stars Neoliberal polices and the poor - ugly human nature at work........2002-10-12

If the poor were to benefit from neoliberal policies, Dying for Growth argues, Mexico should provide an exemplary case. With constant encouragement from the United States, Mexico has aggressively implemented neoliberal policies for more than 20 years. The maquiladora sector of the economy, industrial plants owned by transnational corporations (TNCs) manufacturing products to export primarily to the United States, has grown quickly since the implementation of NAFTA, but this has been at the expense of other sectors of the economy. Competition with TNCs has undermined 30 000 small businesses and millions of subsistence farmers. Millions of permanently displaced peasants have made their way to urban shantytowns or tried to immigrate to the United States.
Read what does it mean to privatize health care system and industry in many countries around the world.
Learn how rich get richer and poor get poorer virtually everywhere, including USA and other developed nations.
How realy "free" is trade, market and for whom ?
Who controls "New World Order" - politicians elected by citizens or corporations ?
If you are not sure what is the answer - get this very interesting and disturbing research/analysis coming from Institute for Health and Social Justice.

5 out of 5 stars What's the connection between poverty and health?.......2002-05-18

This book provides a very thorough examination of how unequal patterns of growth and social inequality on a global scale have resulted in dire consequences for those many unfortunate who cannot afford health care. Many individuals, especially those residing in the United States, are already aware of the growing costs of health care. But imagine what it is like to live in a developing country where medical care is rudimentary at best and you're at the mercy of industrial pollution from the nearby TNC factory?

Using health as an indicator of social inequality, the authors examine the connections between poverty and illness. Aggregate statistics depicting the health status on a global scale are improving is debunked. Rather, there is an uneven distribution of health improvements: the wealthy have access to comprehensive medical care while the poor are dying from preventable diseases. Access to resources is restricted, even in the midst of technological advancements in medicine. The goal of this book is to examine how international organizations such as the World Bank, IMF, and WTO along with TNCs influence political and economic structures of nations which in turn affect the accessibility , cost, and quality of health care provided (if any). The central question raised concerns what pattern of growth will benefit those in need the most? How can we redistribute global resources from the powerful few to the many of the world's poor?

There is no doubt that the subject matter of this book is very extensive and the book itself is pretty thick, but reading this book will enable one to gain a better understanding of how recent trends in globalization have had devasting effects on the world's population. The authors provide good case studies that illustrate their main arguments. This book continues to serve as a vital reference source for my studies.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for not ignorant people.......2001-03-24

Unless you are not committed with the international situation and have a blind vision of how the world and the globalization are changind our living world, this book will improve your knowledge in many aspects.

It is very sad that people like the reader from New Yourk could express the opinion in his(her)review. The fact the he(she)didn't even signed his(her) opinion put his(her) criticism out of any kind of consideration.

I am very happy that there are another people that I even don't know personally, like Stephen Yhu that have a broader vision. I am also glad that other readers from USA, have expressed intelligent points of view.

                  5 out of 5 stars Not so!.......2000-08-12

The previous reviewer, unfortunately, fails to understand much economics and likely rated this book for his own Republican purposes. As a Yale economist, I place my full support on the economics in this book. Unfortunately, the previous reviewer misses the point altogether, which has little to do with economics--it is a point about humanism. Not only are these authors qualified to draw the conclusions they do--their heavily documented and outstanding conclusions present a fresh analysis for those who have heard about global equity problems but need the details fleshed-out in an interesting and accurate manner. It is clear that this text is grounded in strong scholarly research while maintaining its voice to the common reader. Definitely a read for anyone interested in equity issues, global problems, and health care.
