Although the singer's voice is a bit shrieky, I still listen to it with my baby at night before bed. I just wish I had more time to shop for a better one.

      Book Description

Thirty Nine actual funny police stories gathered during the authors thirty three years on the Toledo, Ohio Police Force.

Police work is ongoing stress. It includes tense association with people who commit theft, murder and mayhem. It also includes the human duties of telling someone their loved ones have been maimed, killed, or arrested. Punctuating this bitterness are those precious humorous moments which make the job acceptable and keep an officer's sanity.

Bob Morrissey shows himself to be a master storyteller in this deceptively simple, cleverly crafted collection of upbeat true-life stories in the life of a fomer police officer. It is loaded with upbeat ironies of the "street" as seen through the eyes of an astute observer of the human condition. It's a feel-good hoot! Heartily recommended.

very self-conscious and smart, often a bit show-offy and exhibitionistic, but that keeps your attention; great intro paragraphs on each chapter, great stuff on putrescence. Probably the best, most imaginative, and bravest book written on Scorsese.

4 out of 5 stars Finding Scorsese's Connections and Inspirations.......2001-03-30

Film professor Lesley Stern has written what amounts to an enthusiastic love letter to the great postmodern film director, Martin Scorsese.

It's a good read, though text does not follow the usual stylistic protocol of essay or non-fiction book writing. Full of gushing observations about postmodernist connections between Scorsese's work and that of other film directors.

That's okay, because Scorsese is a brilliant postmodernist and pure film buff who happily steals (Hitchcock would be proud) from all kinds of filmic sources.

However so much fun reader will have, going after all the videos this book praises, the pace and path of the writing can be almost overwhelming. It is full of ricochets and breathless connections to all kinds of sources. I found it annoying, sometimes, how rather reactive the text could be... this is like this is connected to this is from this is similar to this, etc etc.

But I give it four stars because anyone who likes Scorsese will probably enjoy reading this.

        5 out of 5 stars fabulous book!.......1999-11-09

The reader really gets a sense of Scorsese; the master of film direction. Beautifully written in extreme elegance. Whitty---well done...a must read!

          4 out of 5 stars A Solid Foundation.......2003-12-22

I found this book to give a good foundation for role-playing in the golden age of piracy. I found it a good mixture of fact and cinematic fiction. The classes and prestige classes seemed balanced to me and all of them seemed to have a place in a pirate campaign. I especially enjoyed the section on the loa and djab. None of the sections were exhaustive in their information on the setting, but then the book is really only meant to be an overview. In my experience, a "high adventure", cinematic style of role playing only gets bogged down with too much background, so I found the setting information in Skull & Bones to be adequate for my needs as a GM. All in all, I am very happy to have this addition to my RPG library, and it will get extensive use in my current campaign.

3 out of 5 stars D20 Stuff Ok Start But History is Marginal.......2003-12-13

If you're looking for pirate stuff to add to your DnD Campaign this book has it. If you're looking for pirate roleplaying in a Caribbean setting, the authors have done a marginal job of research. Sure you've got the list o'famous pirates ripped off from the Kid's Own Pirate Book at the local library, but these guys know very little about the Caribbean and not much about piracy in the Caribbean. For a book that purports to focus on piracy from 1690 to 1720 there are very strange gaps and contradictions. St. Eustatius the wealthiest Dutch trading colony and prime place to sell pirated and privateered goods is entirely absent from both the map of the Caribbean and the gazetteer of islands. Martinique is listed as very fertile with thousands of settlers and tens of thousands of slaves, yet neither produces and nor demands products? Yes, the French government bans any trade that doesn't go through France, but this is supposed to be a pirate game! Either you're going to be smuggling things in and out or you'll be raiding those French trade ships. There is no real explanation of the politics or history of the era, just dribs and drabs tossed in as 'scenario' seeds. It is instructive that there is no bibliography or recommended reading section, the authors clearly haven't done much. One wonders if they have even looked at Fodor's Travel guide to the Caribbean. The authors have self-consciously modeled their vision of the Caribbean on Tim Power's novel "On Stranger Tides," but Powers had actually read DeFoe's "The Pyrates" and other historical sources. If you want to run a historical campaign, fantasy influenced or not, this book does not give a GM a coherent set of information to work with, leaving the GM to do research without so much as a few suggested books. You get the feeling they spent all their time tweaking feats and thinking up spells, but little reading about pirates or the Caribbean. Actually the best RPG book in print about this era is "Furry Pirates" by Breakey and Thomas, which book also proves you can add fantasy ideas successfully to a campaign without ignoring history and geography. It's sad that this book is at best half a complete product since the same publisher did a great job with their "Testament" biblical RPG, weird too that they could find someone to do serious reading about the Bible and archaelogogy & Middle Eastern history, but no one to do the same about pirates and the Caribbean. If you want ready made 'pirate' classes, feats, spells, etc. this book is for you (hence 3 star rating); if you want a 'pirate' campaign setting it is not really here (this part gets 1 or 2 stars at best). Let the buyer beware.

5 out of 5 stars Pirates and Zombies.......2003-12-01

Finally a role playing supplement that delivers it all. A lot of hard work has been put into this and it shows. Kudos to the developers!
Not only do you have several unique character classes but an interesting background creation chapter along with a real and complete treatise on Voodoo. New skill, new weapons, new feats new monsters(!) together with a accurate history of the era, islands and way of life all mix together like good rum punch. If this is a genre that interests you then you will simply have to buy this. Puts all the previous supplements on pirates and seafaring into the rubbish bin.

          Book Description

When Avent announced that he was quitting his job to build a specialty nursery, his former horticulture professor begged his student to reconsider, telling him he couldn't possibly make a profit "without doing something illegal." More than ten years and 20 nursery catalogs later, Avent owns a thriving national business with nearly 30 employees. He wrote So You Want to Start a Nursery to debunk myths about the ornamental-plants nursery business and what it takes to succeed, whether you're a backyard hobbyist or a wholesale grower. (And he still has a clean arrest record.)

Assuming that the reader has some basic knowledge about how plants are grown, Avent focuses on the business and planning concerns of the nursery owner. While recounting humorous stories of his baptism by fire as a beginning nurseryman, Avent also provides a primer on the nursery industry as a whole, with discussions of the merits and disadvantages of retail, wholesale, mail-order, and liner operations, to name just a few. Readers of this book will obtain the tools they need to make a business plan of their own. This book is a must-read for horticulture students, industry insiders, and advanced gardeners who dream of turning their passion for plants into a job they love.

I was engrossed when I first picked the book up and have been reading it every night since. Lots of great information and no nonsense advice. Real world information and a must have for anyone thinking about starting a nursery.

5 out of 5 stars The otherside of the Nursery.......2007-05-26

This book is not your typical "grower" book. It has little to do with actually growing, this is a business book. If provides you with details of the actual running of a nursery business that you probably have never thought of. If you are looking at starting a greenhouse/nursery/veggie stand etc this book would be a wise investment.

Hailed as "compelling" by The Washington Post and "stunningly honest" by The San Francisco Chronicle, this memoir has hit bestseller lists and earned critical praise from coast to coast. Rebecca Walker was born in 1969 to author Alice Walker and lawyer Mel Leventhal, who met and married in the heyday of the Civil Rights movement. But after their divorce, Rebecca was a lonely only child ferrying between two worlds-and trying to figure out where she fit in.

"Walker skillfully depicts her tangled upbringing, full of disappointment and privilege." (Time)

          "Compelling." (The Dallas Morning News)

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Memoir.......2007-05-30

I discovered how much I like Rebecca Walker's writing, voice and style after reading a forward she wrote for an anthology of mixed race writings. Then I heard her speak and I read "Black, White and Jewish" the next day. I didn't want to put the book down and I was sorry when her memoir ended because I wanted to keep on reading.
And no, at that point it had not yet occurred to me that she was Alice Walker's daughter. Besides, that would not have made any difference to me anyway. Both Alice and Rebecca are excellent authors, but the fact that they are related is not important to me. What matters is that Rebecca has written an excellent memoir.

          Thank you Rebecca.

          5 out of 5 stars A story to share...........2007-05-07

What caught my eye at first was her last name...Walker. So I said to myself she must have inherited her Mom's way of putting into words her thoughts. Once I started to read the story, I could not put it down. The pain was felt through each chapter, each change of home every two years. What a way to grow up. But grow up she did into a very complex woman who can share her childhood with others who may also have the identity crisis of having not only parents from different racial backgrounds, but also of having the constant shift of "home". The book helped me understand what my daughters have gone through with their Mom being white, their Dad being African American and a military family with the moving every couple of years. Once I was done, I gave the book to my now 24 year old daughter, a mother now of half Honduran and the rest of her children. Thanks for opening her up to others being out there who may share her pain and to open our conversation up more than it already was.

3 out of 5 stars Quick read, Had some insights........2007-02-26

ALthough I enjoyed the writing style and some of the portrayals of her family and multi-racial experiences, I expected this book to be more about the later and her coming of age rather than the attention given to her sexual experiences. This did not seem as important to the book as the themes on racism, black/Jewish relations, etc. I would have liked more of that. It seemed like she had a lot of rebellion against her dad and his wife, but they seemed more there for her than her mom. I found this book very interesting and I would like to read more by this author and on this topic.

1 out of 5 stars Rebecca Walker is a Schlemiel and a Putz........2007-01-26

What do Lenny Kravitz, Craig David, Derek Jeter, Hale Berry, Barak Obama, Rain Pryor, Keanu Reeves, and The Rock all have in common? They're successfull bi-racial Americans of politics, arts, and athletics. Unfortunately, Rebecca Walker Leventhal doesn't measure up. She feels sorry for herself because she's half-white, and she's angry at her father for making her half-Jewish. Poor thing.

Leventhal's life is nowhere near as bad as she wants us to believe. Her father cared about her very much, and her stepmom sounds okay to me, but she writes about her father like he was neglectful. She's angry at him for moving the family to a suburb, but was that such a bad thing? What's wrong with wanting to live in a good area with great schools? She felt alienated from her white Jewish friends, but that was self-imposed. All these Jewish people WANTED to be her friend, but the suburbs just weren't good enough for her.

Her next complaint is her teen years. She acts like it was all pain and guilt, but from what I read, she had a great time. She had lots of interesting boyfriends, and spent a summer on the set of "The Color Purple." She graduated from high school, went to an Ivy League college, and that doesn't sound bad.

Walker's problem is her MOTHER. Alice Walker was a terrible parent. What kind of mother refuses to take her daugher to meet her principal? What kind of mother refuses to be involved in her daughter's life. I think the reason she complains so much is that she's realy angry at her mother, but seems guilty accusing her. After all, Alice Walker is black, and she can't accuse her black mother of anything. Her Jewish father is an easier target.

Leventhal (or Walker, whatever she calls herself) should stop thinking of herself as a victim and a mutant, and start thinking of herself as the product of two wonderful things. Lenny Kravitz was another Black Jewish American, and he had his lumps, including his parents' divorce. But being Black and Jewish didn't hold him back, it kept him going. Rain Pryor was a Black jew, and her dad was a cokehead, but she writes about her life with strength and humor.

At first I didn't think Rebecca had the wisdom commonly associated with American Jews. But then I realized she's one of us. How do I know? Her whining! Read "Born to Kvetch" and you'll learn why Jews are stereotyped as whiners. We're very vocal about things, including our problems. It's one of the ways that we avoid stress and anger, which in other cultures leads to drunkness, temper flashes and wife-beating. But we do other things besides complain, and that's all she does. Complain.

4 out of 5 stars Thank You Rebecca !.......2006-11-30

While I believe you were more privileged than I was, thank you for telling the Jewish community what it needed to hear as opposed to what it wanted to hear.

As a fellow multiracial Jew, your assertions about the Jewish community were unfortunately more accurate than many would like to admit. Rebecca distanced herself from a community that didn't accept her. While I still express my Judaism at home and attend synagogue on the HHD, I don't attend schul due to racism myself. I got tired of being mistaken for the janitor, maid, or nanny. I deserve more respect than that, I'm a human being. She's getting a lot of criticism from people who want to believe in the "Jews never have race problems" crowd. Sorry guys, but its an issue.

The intercallary style of the book may annoy certain readers, but I felt they were a welcome literary device to evoke her deepest emotions. I believe she may be a bit self-indulgent at times, but I think she does display how many mixed people (and mixed Jews for that matter) feel about their communities. However, Rebecca's downward spiral into self destructive behaviors is more of a symptom of bad parenting than a community that rejects her.

I honestly don't think Rebecca is ashamed of her Jewish heritage. What Rebecca IS ashamed of how she was treated by her family and others. How would you feel about a community that doesn't consider you Jewish enough? Even worse, the same people tell you that you're not taking enough pride in your heritage, although it rejects you.

Guess what guys, the problem is mostly you, not Rebecca.

            Book Description

The fictional heroics of C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower and Patrick O'Brian's Jack Aubrey are pale imitations of the deeds of Admiral Lord Thomas Cochrane, one of the most daring and successful real-life heroes the naval world has ever seen. In this fascinating account of his life, Donald Thomas fills in the details of Cochrane's winning exploits against the French Navy, actions that earned him the title "Sea Wolf" from Napoleon. Despite his extraordinary accomplishments and the controversies that plagued his long life, today the admiral is not well known outside the naval community. Thomas's splendid narrative is certain to give the valiant and romantic sea warrior the recognition he deserves. His meticulous scholarship and index, notes, and bibliography make the biography a useful reference. The battle descriptions are particularly noteworthy, especially that of the Basque Roads in 1809 when Cochrane nearly achieved another Nile.

Cochrane's battles on land as a politician are described with equal attention to colorful detail. While mounting a vigorous campaign against corruption in the Admiralty, he gained many enemies, who, in turn, framed him in a sensational stock exchange fraud case. Imprisoned briefly, he fought back with his usual intensity, restored his reputation, and returned to sea, bound in 1818 for the wars of independence in South America. Once again with nearly total disregard of danger, he helped liberate Brazil and Chile from colonial rule. Upon his death in 1860, a few weeks before his eighty-fifth birthday, he received a hero's burial in Westminster Abbey.

5 out of 5 stars Better than fiction.......2002-10-21

As the blurb on the back cover says: forget Horatio Hornblower, forget Jack Aubrey. Even the license given to them as fictional characters can't surpass the facts of Lord Cochrane's extraordinary life. A supremely creative tactician and breathtaking improviser at sea (it was no less a person than Napoleon who nicknamed him the 'Sea Wolf') his story ashore is worthy of a book in itself.

This book has it all: blood, guts and glory pitted against both the enemy abroad and the corrupt establishment at home. Once read, there's no forgetting this man and his story.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent swashbuckling Story.......2002-03-21

This book was first published in 1978 but has now been re-released to the benefit of all who enjoy a fast-paced historical account. After reading this book I am amazed that it has taken nearly twenty years to be re-released. What a great story Mr. Thomas tells of Thomas, Lord Cochrane, later the 10th Earl of Dundonald. From his birth through to his death covering all his exploits in numerous sea battles and actions, so many in fact that you find it hard to believe that he survived.

The book covers Cochrane's battles during the Napoleonic Wars during which, on many occasions, he sent his ship in action against overwhelming odds. It was during this period that he was recognized, as one of Britain's most daring and successful captains. It was also during this period that he made many enemies, although he pressed hard in every action and took many risks, he always considered the well being of the men under his command. This later led to his single-handed campaign against corruption in the Admiralty.

Following the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 Cochrane commenced an extraordinary career as a mercenary admiral. He subsequently commanded the navies of Chile and Brazil and launched campaigns against their protagonists, Spain and Portugal. After finishing his 'little wars' in South America he took command of elements of the Greek navy in their war against the Turks. In all these campaigns Cochrane again showed that he was one of the best naval commanders of his time.

The narrative flowed along smoothly and although I have no great knowledge of maritime history I had no problems in following this story. In over 350 pages of text along with a number of black & white plates and a few maps Mr. Thomas tells a wonderful and exciting story. This is the type of book, which I am sure any person who has a love for history or who enjoys the novels of C. S. Forester and Patrick O'Brien will just love. A must for any serious student of naval tactics or Napoleonic warfare.

              Book Description

Consider the following: Over 1.7 million Americans live in prison, a three hundred percent increase since 1980; In some US cities, one third of all young Black men are in jail, on probation or awaiting trial; In California, spending on prisons has eclipsed allocations for higher education; Starbucks, Jansport and Microsoft all use prison labor to package their products; Corrections Corporations of America, the nation's largest private jailer, has been dubbed a 'theme stock for the 90s.' Why is criminal justice so central to American politics? Lockdown America not only documents the horrors and absurdities of militarized policing, prisons, a fortified border, and the federalization of the war on crime, it also explains the political and economic history behind the massive crackdown. Written in accessible and vivid prose, Lockdown America will propel readers toward a deeper understanding of the links between crime and politics in a period of gathering economic crisis.

2 out of 5 stars The liberal Rush Limbaugh.......2003-04-03

When I embarked upon reading this book, I thought I would be getting a fair and precise look into the American legal system. What I got was anything but that. Anybody wanting to read this book should know that Parenti is an extreme left-winger and this book is an acidic ribbing of the Republican Party, police offers, etc. etc. I do admit that Parenti is quite knowledgeable about the justice system and he provides many examples -- this book is full of examples to back up his points. But there is a problem: the only examples he gives are examples of police malfeasance, he never tells police success stories.
Also, my other major complaint is that throughout much of the book, he assumes a Rush Limbaugh personae and just starts taking irrelevant, low blows at people. He calls Rudy Giuliani a "ghoul," he sarcastically calls Dan Quayle "that towering intellect," and he even goes so far as to make fun of the way New York City Police Chiefs dress while they are off duty.

Overall, this book is not very scholarly in tone. It states that there is a problem, but he never offers a solution to the problem - it is just a couple hundred pages of non-stop whining and Limbaugh-esque mocking of people he disagrees with.
If you are looking for a good introduction to contemporary American justice and the legal system, I HIGHLY suggest you look elsewhere.

              5 out of 5 stars Indispensable.......2002-07-17

This is the best book I've ever read that deals with the burgeoning police-state in the U.S. Parenti ranges far and wide by giving a sound structural analysis as to why police and their paramilitary style tactics have oversaturated our streets. Economics and politics are often at the crux of most social problems; Parenti understands this and gives the reader an intellectually fascinating and stimulating journey documenting just how our country has been transformed over the last thirty years into a civil libertarian's nightmare.
As Lockdown America demonstrates, the "social dynamite" and "social junk" need to be quartered and corralled by the ruling class, otherwise the owning class would be forced to put down rebellions and riots. The new American prison boom is dealt with by Parenti along with a myriad of other criminal justice issues. As mentioned above, the most accurate and satisfying aspect of the book is the manner in which it intelligently ties a politico-economic critique into its analysis of criminal justice (sic).
Go beyond nonsense television programs that purport to deal with crime and society, by devouring Parenti's book.

This is a very well written, very thoughtful study of the last 30 years of the criminal justice buildup in this country. This book goes beyond complaining -- it explains with history, theory and rich empirical detail why the US has so many prisons. I've read several books on law and order, this is the best. Excellent for college students or regular folks.

The (good) message of this book is undermined both by its conspiratorial tone and its sloppy reportage (resulting in many inaccuracies). There are many other books of this genre (e.g., Elliot Currie's Crime and Punishment in America, Michael Tonry's Malign Neglect, Frank Zimring and Gordon Hawkins' Scale of Imprisonment) which are much more sound and, for this reason, much more persuasive.

              Stay away from this one.
