5 out of 5 stars MORE THAN CLOTHES!.......2000-10-04

There is very little in print about Issey Miyake and, as a devotee of most Japanese designers, "Issey Miyake: Making Things" for me is an absolute must! This book is promoting an exhibition held in Paris in 1998-99 but it is much much more than an exhibition catalogue. The photography of course is pretty wonderful - and what I particularly love are the many photos showing the textile manufacturing processes - such as Miyake's updated Fortuny-like pleating.

There is a reasonable amount of informative text explaining the Miyake studio, design processes, the Team, an extended interview with Miyake as well as a reasonably full "portrait" of his life.

For anyone fascinated by textiles, modern design and a whole different approach to clothing, you will love this book.

        Book Description

Every Person On The Planet tells the delightful story of Edmund and Rosemary, an average couple who lead an uneventful life, and what happens when one fateful day they decide to throw a party for the holidays. As their guest list becomes longer and longer, they become paralyzed with the fear of forgetting anyone. So naturally, there's only one thing to do--they invite every person on the planet. They never expect that the whole world will show. But what happens when the whole world does?

Every Person On The Planet is hilarious, touching, thoughtful, and uniquely beautiful. We think this is an altogether perfect book and you will too.

5 out of 5 stars Like reading a delightful comic book for adults!.......2006-09-25

Loved EVERY PERSON ON THE PLANET, a short but touching book
written and illustrated by Bruce Eric Kaplan . . . he's a cartoonist
for the NEW YORKER and a former writer for both SEINFELD and
        SIX FEET UNDER.

Reading his book was like reading a comic book for adults . . . there
are delightful illustrations on almost every page, and the
accompanying story about a Brooklyn couple who decide to throw
        a party--while just a tad bit farfetched--was one I could nevertheless
relate to . . . it seems that in having this bash, they faced the
dilemma of who to invite and who not to invite, so to be safe,
they just everyone in the whole world.

And amazingly, everyone in the world decided to attend.

What was fun was looking at the illustrations and then reading
Kaplan's accompanying commentary, which included such
        marvelous passages as the following:

        * But if you don't invite all the cousins,
that's all you ever hear about from
your parents and that's the last thing
        Edmund and Rosemary needed.

So they invited each and every one
of them and sadly, their spouses who
they didn't care for in any way.

        Particularly Edmund's cousin
        Helen's husband, Joe,
        who was always
        irate about something
        no one ever cared about.

        * A billion people ran into their exes, which was
awkward for them, and everyone else. It was
a real argument for staying in touch with your
exes, but not one that was convincing enough
to make any significant amount of the population
        do it in the future.

        * And my favorite:
Edmund had an epiphany. He realized he had
the power to feel connected to anyone, but it was
all up to him. He determined to make this his life's
work, starting tomorrow. Of course, when he woke
up the next morning, he forgot all about it. He
continued to have spiritual crises periodically
as he always had, which was one of the things
about him that Rosemary had just learned to live with.

If you're looking for the ideal gift to give somebody,
do consider EVERY PERSON ON THE PLANET . . . I had
such a good time with it that I'm now looking forward to reading
the other books that the author has written.

        5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2006-01-18

I found BEK's new book to be wholy original and quite humorous. Entertainment Weekly gave it a good review which led me to check it out. Not surprisingly it is quite like his cartoons in The New Yorker each week. For anyone who wants a good laugh, pick up this book. You can't go wrong.

1 out of 5 stars Blah and blahher.......2005-12-20

I bought this book because I thought it would be a great Christmas gift, luckily I read this before I gave it to anyone. It was so blah, it was NOT funny, in fact it elicited no emotions at all from me except boredom. I decided I could not give anyone this weird, boring book for Christmas, so now I am stuck with it.

I usually have a pretty off-beat sense of humor, I can laugh at most situations, but this book killed any chance of laughter.

        5 out of 5 stars Quintessential BEK.......2005-12-15

If you have enjoyed BEK's drawings in The New Yorker over the years, or have ever suffered from the anxieties induced by the pressures of the year-end holidays, then you must have this book. (Those two things pretty much cover everyone.)

The book is funny in the BEK way, and would make an irreverent gift for those who pretend to have it all.

2 out of 5 stars Anxiety outweighed laughs for me .......2005-11-17

Though I laughed a little through the book, all the anxiety of the characters gave me a little of my own. I didn't leave with the good feelings I expected from the reviews. Cute, but just OK.

4 out of 5 stars Very funny if not taken too seriously.......2000-01-15

This book was pretty funny. Obviously anyone who reads this material thinking it's going to be a laugh riot will be disappointed. But it serves its purpose well, it's a great parody of the dummies books with their cutesy icons and tips. I don't understand how anyone can say it wasn't at least 2 or 3 stars.

1 out of 5 stars This book is not funny and a waste of time and money.......1997-05-13

This book is not funny - a total waste of time and money. Poorly written, awkwardly constructed and riddled with humor not worthy of fifth graders. I do not know who these so-called writers are, but they are not humorists. Avoid at all costs

        3 out of 5 stars Moderately funny.......1996-11-02

Well, it had to happen. This slim tome lampoons the very successful "For Dummies" series. Each chapter sends up a different book in the series with more or less success. The Sex for Dummies chapter was quite funny, while the Internet for Dummies chapter was pretty lame (even lamer than the original, if I do say so my rather biased self.)

Even so, at under eight bucks it's a fine stocking stuffer for any Dummies lover.

Dylan Jones's alphabetical listing of the groups, composers, and concepts surrounding lounge music is exhaustive in its breadth. He not only is fully conversant in the grandfathers of the form, he also is able to follow their lineage through the stereophonic experimentation of such '60s swingers as Esquivel and Herb Alpert, '70s soul-meisters such as the Fifth Dimension, and contemporary appropriaters of the Mancini legacy such as Pizzicato Five and trip-hoppers such as Tricky. Colorful reproductions of the oddly hilarious album covers of the early '60s highlight this fun and informative volume.

              The Influentials

Who are they? The most influential Americans -- the ones who tell their neighbors what to buy, which politicians to support, and where to vacation -- are not necessarily the people you'd expect. They're not America's most affluent 10 percent or best-educated 10 percent. They're not the "early adopters," always the first to try everything from Franco-Polynesian fusion cooking to digital cameras. They are, however, the 10 percent of Americans most engaged in their local communities...and they wield a huge amount of influence within those communities. They're the campaigners for open-space initiatives. They're church vestrymen and friends of the local public library. They're the Influentials...and whether or not they are familiar to you, they're very well known to the researchers at RoperASW. For decades, these researchers have been on a quest for marketing's holy grail: that elusive but supremely powerful channel known as word of mouth. What they've learned is that even more important than the "word" -- what is said -- is the "mouth" -- who says it. They've identified, studied, and analyzed influence in America since the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey (now Exxon) hired Elmo Roper himself to develop a model for identifying opinion leaders, and in The Influentials, they are finally ready to share their results. A few samples:

              • Influentials have been the "early majority" -- leading indicators of what Americans will be buying -- for more than five decades, from choosing energy-efficient cars in the 1970s to owning computers in the 1980s to adopting 401(k)s and IRAs in the 1990s to using the Internet and cell phones today.

              • Influentials have led the way in social development as well, from the revival of self-reliance (in managing their own health care, investments, and consumption) to mass skepticism about the marketing claims of everything from breakfast food to politicians.

Although America's Influentials have always been powerful, they've never been more important than now. Today, a fragmented market has made it possible for Influentials to opt out of mass-message advertising, which means that a different route must be taken to capture their hearts and minds. The Influentials is a map for that route, a map that explains who these people are, how they exercise influence, and how they can be targeted. The Influentials features a series of rules and guidelines for marketing to Influentials; case studies of products that have prospered because of Influential marketing (and products that have failed because they lacked it); a history of the phenomenon...and why Influentials are more influential today than ever; and profiles of twelve real-life Influentials.

Both an intellectual adventure and a hands-on marketing manual, The Influentials is an extraordinary gold mine of information and analysis that no business can afford to ignore.

What they've learned is that even more important than the ""word"" -- what is said -- is the ""mouth"" -- who says it. They've identified, studied, and analyzed influence in America since the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey (now Exxon) hired Elmo Roper himself to develop a model for identifying opinion leaders, and in The Influentials, they are finally ready to share their results.

              2 out of 5 stars Not Recommended.......2007-01-28

If you can read the title, there's not much of a point in reading the rest of the book...except maybe for one section describing how to identify "the influentials". Still, I don't recommend buying it.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful core theme- Doesn't need a full book though.......2005-05-19

Interesting book. Basic premise is that the folks that spread the word about mass market products are not movie stars or early adopters, but folks who are socially and politically active in their communities. Think den mothers, PTA members, folks in the Lions Club, the local city council etc. The notion connects to the concepts outlined in "Tipping Point" about Connectors, Mavens and Salespeople, although the framing is different and in this case Influentials appear to be part Connector, part Maven and part Salespeople.

In any case, it's a valuable insight which is probably relevant across cultures and countries. You don't need to read the whole book but it's worth reading a few chapters.

2 out of 5 stars Good title, but the actual book part just muddles things.......2004-11-18

The Influetials is either just a big statistical blob or I missed something. Keller et al start out by describing the influential as someone who other people in the community kind of look toward. They are very socially connected and respected. There is no doubt in my mind that the proposition that one in ten people has a huge influence on how the other nine think, however instead of exploring the social patterns Keller et al try to define that person whom they call an "Influential" They begin by saying in the first chapter that statistics can't pinpoint an influential and then spend most of the book tossing statistics on influentials at the reader - lots of tables that don't tell me anything.

One thing that I found interesting were the case studies scattered through the book. Basically these were mini-biographies of influentials slanted more towards what they were up to at the moment. Even these weren't all that helpful.

I recommend skipping The Influentials. The title is really good but the book doesn't focus or do much to back it up. Actually things just get muddled. The Tipping Point by Malcome Gladwell has a good bit of discussion about who influences opinions and how. Check that out instead.

              5 out of 5 stars The Influentials.......2004-03-31

The Roper organization has long been known for the quality and reliability of its data. Now it has given us a remarkable distillation of information in order to show how a select group of people carry more weight in the decision-making processes of the rest of us.

In "The Influentials: One American in Ten Tells the Other Nine How to Vote, Where to Eat and What to Buy," Jon Berry and Ed Keller of Roper ASW tell us how certain people stay ahead of the curve and, essentially, create and maintain that most precious of marketing commodities: "word of mouth."

Of course, the real trick is discover how channels of influence weave their way through the popular culture and subtly induce us to buy. The "Influentials" among us have mastered this because, according to Berry and Keller, they are more likely to accept new ideas, to ask questions, and to listen carefully. With its fact-based approach, "The Influentials" brings us into the lives of people whose habits, desires and innate characteristics enable them to create the "buzz" that will lead to product success.

The book is extremely well documented, with lots of charts and graphs that go back through 30 years or Roper research. As a marketing professional, I was impressed with their arguments and their proven methods. Great book. I say, go for it !.

3 out of 5 stars There *is* good information in here.......2004-02-11

There really is good information in this book. And some of the findings are certainly useful for understanding this important segment of the population.

However, the book reads like a 300+ page market research report. You are bombarded with statistic after statistic embedded in what seems to be every other sentence.

If you manage or market consumer products professionally, you will probably find this book useful. If you're reading this for personal interest, be aware that it is a bit tedious to read.

                Book Description

"I was late to school, and that's all I could think about. I started across the field. And then suddenly a fire flashed in my face and the earth seemed to move beneath my feet. I remember a shower of soil and then nothing. I woke up on the ground, surrounded by a crowd, men and boys...no women. They were all staring down at me with huge eyes. Their lips were moving, but I could hear no voices. All I heard was a loud ringing in my ears."

Farah Ahmedi is born into the world just as the war between the mujahideen and the Soviets reaches its peak in Afghanistan. Bombs are falling all over her country, and her native Kabul is swelling with hundreds of thousands of people looking for homes and jobs. The sounds of gunfire and fighter planes are as normal to Farah as the sounds of traffic or children playing are to a schoolgirl in America. When Farah steps on a land mine on her way to school, her world becomes much smaller than the dreams and hopes in her heart. She begins to learn--slowly--that ordinary people, often strangers, have immense power to save lives and restore hope.

The Story of My Life: An Afghan Girl on the Other Side of the Sky recounts an epic journey. It deftly interweaves a childhood in Afghanistan, where the classrooms are naked chambers with only chalkboards on the walls and are filled with more students than seats (and no books), with an American adolescence, where teenagers struggle to decide whether to try out for school plays, whom to take to the homecoming dance, and where to go to college. In Kabul, they cancel school because of rockets and bombings; in Chicago, Farah might have a snow day. In Kabul, a schoolgirl wears a black dress and a white headscarf; in America, girls need the right jeans and trendy tops.

Thanks to a number of good people who crossed her path at critical moments, Farah is thriving. She may be haunted by her past, but she is no longer enslaved by it. She is actively enjoying the realization of her childhood dreams; she's an Afghan American, free to learn, work, support herself, and choose her own path. She'll graduate from high school soon and is being recruited by some of the best colleges in the world.

Farah is living proof that not only can the human heart endure, it can also thrive. Even in war, there are miracles. Even when limbs are amputated, we are whole. Even in refugee camps, dreams come true. Even when fathers and siblings die young, there is love. The Story of My Life is our new great American memoir.

I am reading this book with my class at school. I love it! I look forward to it everyday. This is a story that every American needs to hear because it is living proof of how much we have been given. When you realize that many people in the world have had to deal with the things that Farah did, the everyday dramas in your life are put into a totally new perspective. This book is real. It happened to real people, it teaches real lessons, and that is why it leaves any hollow fiction or fantasy behind.

4 out of 5 stars An extraordinary story.......2007-05-16

When seven-year-old Farah Ahmedi stepped on a landmine in her native Afghanistan, she thought her life was over. The hospital in her war-torn city only tried to keep her alive until German doctors made their regular monthly visit, airlifting the most crucial cases to heal in their own country.

Away from her family and culture, Farah fell apart.

Then, as she began to heal, she made friends with a German woman, who informally adopted Farah like one of her own. Gradually, Farah began to learn the language and enjoy the peaceful, beautiful country -- making it just as shocking when she was returned to her family two years later.

Suddenly, nothing Farah's family or country can offer her seems good enough. The little girl had become used to a better life, and she was determined to live it again.

That wish kept her determination driven over the next few years, when war ravaged her family and her home. Left with nothing but a crippled daughter, Farah's mother hovered on the brink of madness and wanted to give up. But Farah, who had had a peek of what life could be, believed the two were destined to live in America through a special program for Afghan widows and orphans.

After numerous obstacles - including 9/11 - the two finally get their wish. But their struggle is far from over, as they find themselves in the midst of a culture clash with the general American public. Farah's mother is still battling mental demons, and Farah herself not only has to learn to speak and read English, but read altogether, as her Afghan education had fallen apart during wartime.

Above all, Farah learns, there is always a higher power out there, willing to help you during your most desperate times, sending relief in the form of a person destined to cross your life's path.

This simply told story is a powerful testament to the atrocities that can be endured without breaking. Farah Ahmedi is one extraordinary teenager, destined to do great things.

5 out of 5 stars A deeply, moving story from a country of war.......2007-04-09

I got Farad's audio book because we have been working in relief and development in Afganistan since 1984. It is a well narrated book, an uplifting account the suffering of a child and of people who come into our lives and believe in us, love us and walk with us through the difficulties of life in Afghanistan, Pakistan and in America.

Farad, a young, Hazara girl, has lived an unbelievable life before reaching the age of 15. Her story is a first hand picture of the devastation of a beautiful country destroyed by war and ethnic conflict. She and her family were caught in the middle. She stepped on a landmine as she was going to school in Kabul. She was in the second grade and things went downhill from there.

This is a story of suffering and pain but finding strength to respond when it seemed impossible. This is a story of faith and people practically living out their faith. It is the story of a young girl who has a dream.

This book is great reading for teeens through adults. It is an easy read - can be read in 1-2 days. The story is gripping and suspenseful and really gives one an understanding of life in turbulent Afghanistan and the difficulty refugees encountered to make their way out. My husband and I read the book and enjoyed it as did my daughters, ages 19 and 17.

I personally know the girl who wrote this book. She is an amazing person and has so many stories to tell. She was given the opportunity to share her story because she has gone experienced so many things. This really is a must read for everyone. For such a young person, she has gone through more than most will go through before they are middle aged and yet, she still thrives and lives for each day doing the best she can at everything she does. Enough said...buy this book!

This is an excellent first person story of a young girl's life in Afghanistan, her experiences after stepping on a land mine, and her difficult transition when she and her mother come to America. Farah Ansary wrote this book as a teenager attending an American high school. This would be a great book to be required reading for all American teenagers! And it's a good book for adults as well.

                  Book Description

The siege at Hue ultimately determined the outcome of the Vietnam War. Now, here is the most complete account yet of that fateful
                  battle. . . .

On 31 January, 1968, the North Vietnamese and Vietcong launched the Tet Offensive, attacking thirty-six major South Vietnamese cities and towns. While American soldiers throughout the country dealt with the ferocity of the surprise attack, the most bitter battle of the entire war was unfolding at Hue. From the first round of incoming mortars to the triumphant hoisting of the American flag over the enemy's bastion, U.S. Army captain George W. Smith was there.

With reports from many eyewitnesses, Smith presents the day-to-day struggle in gripping detail, following the bloodyfought in the street by the three U.S. Marine battalions who played the decisive role in the liberation of Hue. Smith also covers the social and political upheaval in the ancient city of temples and palaces, the now-verified executions of nearly 3,000 civilians by the NVA and VC, and the crucial role of the American press.

Four men won the Congressional Medal of Honor for heroism during the Battle of Hue, and the U.S. Marines were awarded ten Navy Crosses for extraordinary gallantry. Captain Smith honors these men--and their selfless acts of courage.

who fought at Hue. And it is written by somebody who was there. Hue was every bit as tough a battle against every bit as formidable an enemy as any Americans have ever faced. The soldiers who fought and died there deserve all the respect due them for having fought an incredibly tough battle. Most paperbacks I dispose of after reading. Not this one. It goes into the Vietnam collection.

A GOOD BOOK ABOUT HUE, BUT I THINK IT NEEDED MORE DETAIL IN DESCRIBING THE URBAN WARFARE AND THE HOUSE TO HOUSE FIGHTING. I NEVER GOT THE FEELING THAT I WAS THERE WHILE READING THE BOOK. THATS WHAT I LOOK FOR IN A MILITARY BOOK.

This Book was very informative. The writer puts you right there in the city, fighting with them.. I would give this book a ten. The writer is right about the Arvn. I have been with the Arvn airborne units and they never did once run from a fight while I was with them. They were not given the accolades that were due them in their fight for the city of Hue.The Marines are always claming they are the best which I will say they are very good, but there were time when the Army had to come in and help them. What a read!! The author does a superb job of outlining the plot to take Hue by the North Vietnamese and puts you in the middle of the battle. His perosnal recollection as well as the interviews with former commanders is riveting.

As a non-military person, the explanations of key events and strategies is clear and concise. I found it hard to put down!!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent summary.......1999-11-17

This slim volume, grossly overpriced, is an excellent summary of a pivotal battle of the Tet offensive of 1968. Smith was in Hue throughout the battle as an Army PIO and gives a very balanced view of what went on. Often heralded as primarily a Marine battle, Smith rightly documents the actions of the Army units and the hard fighting done by the ARVN, particularly the paratroop units and the 1st Division. He strikes just the right balance between history and memoir. For the whole story, not just Smith's view, there are a number of books on the battle of Hue which he notes for the reader. Particularly effective was his post-war visits with some of the South Vietnamese commanders. The war cost all us, those of us who served there, those who lost their loved ones, but especially those who did both of those things and lost their country too.

                    Book Description

January 31, 1968. A cold, dense fog had settled over the city of Hue, South Vietnam. Guards posted at key points around the lightly defended American military advisors' compound stared out into blackness. Nothing could be seen or heard until the blinding flash and shocking concussion of an exploding rocket tore through the fog. A hail of rocket and mortar shells was followed by a ground attack. It was soon obvious to the heterogeneous group (Army, Navy, Marine and Air Force personnel) inside the compound that a large group of people outside the compound wanted to kill them. The Tet battle for Hue was on. The Americans battled for their lives. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Richard Brown had two jobs: leading Forward Air Controllers responsible for the area between the demilitarized zone (DMZ) and DaNang, plus advising General Truong, First ARVN Division Commander, on Air Force support. He lived in the Hue MACV compound and remained in the city during the first seventeen days of the battle. The author began his military career during World War II as a fighter pilot in the Fourteenth Air Force, China, under the command of General Claire Chennault. Called back to active duty during the Korean War, he remained in military service until the end of his duty tour in Vietnam. Curious as to how communism could "benefit" common man, he returned to China in 1980 and Vietnam in 1988., 32 pages of photographs, 6" x 9"

4 out of 5 stars Useful for Public Administrators and Wanna-bes.......2003-04-27

Used as part of my class in Public Policy and Public Administration, this book is written well enough that it's not nearly as dry as other things we were assigned in the program. It's not chock full of theoretical jargon, and offers enough useful, thoughtful cases to be more easily understood than most. Still, for a novice with an interest in how policies are made, I would strongly recommend choosing a book by someone with a great deal of experience in government writing about their experiences- without the accompanying course I took this would have been of little value. Still, its recency is helpful, and the author writes well enough to be almost enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not brilliant.......2002-04-21

The book is up-to-date with most of the current litterature on the subject. A good balance between theory (which is the back bone of the book) and illustrative examples. Staying clear of the awful example set by "Understanding Public Policy" by Dye, professor Anderson shows how you can analyze, although not neccessarily predict, policymaking. A very useful annotated biography is included. I also appreciated the commonsensical, reflective tone throughout the book. Anderson seems to be a rather wise and thoughtful man.

However, the book is not particularly original. Anderson says more or less the same thing as most other current analysts in the field, and if you are familiar with public policy-litterature, you have heard it all before. His debt to scholars like Baumgartner and Jones is quite large.

Oh, but you were going to use it for teaching? Well, Anderson is a good writer, so the book would be o.k. for introductory classes. But remember, it is fairly basic stuff.

And one more thing, it is all-american. Few words are wasted on comparing different political systems. That is a pity, since international comparisons would highlight the great importance of political institutions.

To wrap it up: a good introductory book for an american audience not familiar with analysis of public policymaking. For an international audience, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Great textbook, great professor!.......2000-04-19

I have to admit, Professor Anderson was one of my favorites at Texas A&M. I took two classes from him on public policy and public policy specifically related to the environment. We used this textbook in the general policy class. It was thorough, detailed and a great tool for the classroom. Highly recommended... Thanks Professor!

                              Book Description

The Great Auk is one of the world's most famous extinct birds. It was undoubtedly a most curious creature: a flightless bird with tiny wings, it stood upright like a human, and sported an enormous beak. On land, the Great Auk was clumsy and awkward, but it was perfectly adapted for swift and efficient movement in the sea, where it spent the large part of the year. In its heyday, it populated the North Atlantic, from Western Europe across to North America, and was a familiar sight to islanders and coastal dwellers when, each May, it would climb ashore for the short breeding season. Yet by the mid-nineteenth century sightings of the bird were but rare occurrences, and just a few decades later even the most assiduous Victorian explorers could not find it. So what happened to the Great Auk? What - or who - caused it to disappear from the northern oceans? Jeremy A. Gaskell draws on eyewitness accounts spanning some four centuries to relate the tale of the Great Auk's extinction. He tells how the Great Auk was hunted by sailors, coastal dwellers, and merchants for its ample flesh, its eggs, and its soft down. He shows how the fate of the Great Auk was inextricably bound up with the prevailing social, economic, and political conditions of the late 18th century. It was also a result of widespread scientific misapprehensions about the nature and geographical range of this mysterious seabird. The disappearance of the Great Auk had a considerable impact on the public imagination of the late 19th Century. Specimens of the birds or their eggs soon began to fetch astronomical prices among collectors. Charles Kingsley used the last Great Auk as a character in The Water Babies. It became the stuff of legend. More importantly, its plight keenly interested a number of great Victorian ornithologists, men like John Wolley, Alfred Newton, and John James Audubon. Later, these self-same men were to cause some of the very first legislation on seabird protection to come into place. As a result this is also the story of the beginnings of bird conservation. This intriguing book takes the reader on a tour of some of the wildest and coldest places on earth, in its attempt to uncover the history of the last days of the Great Auk. We travel with Audubon to Labrador, sail to the remote Scottish island of St Kilda, experience the hardship of life in the colonies of Newfoundland, and follow the peregrinations of intrepid naturalists as they put to sea in search of the very last of the Great Auks. The text is enhanced by numerous maps, photographs, and line drawings, and includes a fine original colour frontispiece by Jan Wilczur.
