Book Description
Human animals-such as centaurs, satyrs, sphinxes, sirens, and gorgons-as well as other composite creatures like Pan, Triton, and the Minotaur are extremely common in Greek myth, literature, theater, and the visual arts. Understanding the phenomenon of combining human and animal elements into composite creatures is central to our knowledge of the Greek imagination. This landmark book is the first to investigate representations of these human animals in early Greek art (ca. 850-450 B.C.). The Centaur's Smile discusses the oriental antecedents of these fantastic creatures, examining the influence of Egyptian and Near Eastern models on the formation of Greek monsters in the early Archaic period. Essays also explore the nature and origin of horse-men (centaurs and satyrs) and the ways in which they are represented in early Greek art. Furthermore, the book surveys the broader range of Greek composite creatures and discusses their evolving forms and changing roles and meaning. Over one hundred exquisite objects-all beautifully reproduced in color-are described and analyzed in detail. Among the featured works are reliefs and statuettes in stone, bronze, and terracotta; jewelry and metalwork in gold, silver, and electrum; engraved sealstones in rock crystal, jasper, and cornelian; and painted ceramic vases from Athens, Corinth, Rhodes, Miletus, Cyprus, and Etruria.

A gem.......2003-12-25
Both the exhibition and this catalogue are absolute gems, and can be appreciated by amateurs and specialists alike. Professionals in Greek myth and art may particularly delight in the little Acheloos figurine (p. 334) and Typhon depictions (as on p. 351), as well as in many other images rarely seen anywhere. A must for anyone teaching Myth or Greek iconography.
Book Description
This book is a study of dress in France in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In it Roche discusses general approaches to the history of dress, locates the subject within current French historiography and uses a large sample of inventories to explore the differences between the various social classes in the amount they spent on clothes and the kind of clothes they wore.
Customer Reviews:
A comprehensive look at clothing.......2000-05-08
Roche's book offers a very complete view of clothing, dress, and fashion (the three are not the same for him) during the early modern period in France. Ranging from notarial inventories to linen theft, his empirical evidence support his main thesis that rapid changes in society ultimately culminated in a clothing revolution of sorts in the latter half of the eighteenth century. His in-depth analysis of even the most esoteric aspects of clothing and dress in the Ancien Regime prove just how diffuse the effects of those items were on all aspects of society. His arguments regarding the development of a sexual dimorphism as a result of changes in and perceptions of fashion presents a particularly interesting viewpoint on how clothes came to "make the man" or women, as the case may be in that argument. Equally interesting are his discussions on linen and cleanliness and the inventories of clothing taken upon a persons death. Importantly, Roche's analysis travels far beyond just a cursory look at the nobility and courtly attire into the world of the bourgeois class and especially on the lower working classes of France at the time. Where other authors fall far short of offering a complete view of attitudes toward fashing, dress, and clothing in the early modern period, Roche ably fills in the gaps and never shies away from an exhaustive look at the many aspects of clothing in the Ancien Regime.

*laughing*.......2001-12-11
At first, I was sad and thought that is this what EQ is becoming?
This? I'd like to cry.
But I read more. This is a good one, though I don't like the drawings. But this comic really made me laugh. And this had a tale in it, a good one. Some EQs don't have very much happening and story inside them, but this one has.
Go on, read this one. EQ will never be what it was in original quest (comics 1-4), but it's still alive.
Elfquest #7 The Cry From Beyond Book Review.......2000-03-30
I think that this book, though I like the whole series, is one of the most intriging. The authors reveal secrets about the charachters, like the info on Nightfall and Redlance. I thought the fact that they managed to work so many of the older characters, like Picknose, Oddbit and "Grammama". Other characters were new, like Trinket and Ekuar. (They have mentioned Ekuar before but not really.) This is one of my favorite books.
Great book!.......2000-03-21
Like just about every other book in the series, I absolutely loved this volume. The Pinis have created a truly unique and wondrous story that captivates the imagination and tears at the heart, and this installment is no exception. A must read for anyone who loves a good story.
ElfQuest book#7.......1999-07-12

Book Description
A playful but proper social introduction to the South and southerners. It's a tongue-in-cheek guidebook to navigating the ways and means of today's Southland. Illustrated.
Customer Reviews:
So-so........2003-12-28
I'm moving to the South so I thought I should learn a few things about the culture. I learned a few new things, but a lot of this book is just fluff - bland lists of things you don't need to know. Lists of football championships, who to mail-order hams from, etc. I did like the info dealing with Southern religions as I didn't know much about the difference between say Baptists and Holy Rollers.
Leaving out Texas.......2002-06-04
I would have given this book a much higher rating, but for my immediate umbrage after seeing that the author had decided to, essentially, leave my native state of Texas out of the modern-day South.
NOW, let me make it clear that certainly, Texas is, as the old saying goes, Texas....belonging completely to no region.
HOWEVER, to "fringe" in southern portions of states such as Ohio, Indiana, etc..and leave Texas not only out of the "genuine Southland" but the border area as well, leads me to conclude that the author has probably never been to the Lone Star State....or if so, confined the stay to spots such as Austin or the DFW metroplex with their yuppie lifestyles and concentration of yankee transplants.
I will confine my case here to East Texas (generally, meaning the part of the state east of Dallas)since it is easily the "most Southern" of the interstate regions. Not only Southern, but pretty much Deep South Southern....especially when one gets over toward the Marshall/Jefferson/Caddo Lake areas. Don't take my word for it, I have talked to too many tourists from Mississippi and Alabama whom I have encountered on my numerous trips out that way, that tell me the land and moodscapes are "just like backhome" Many were actually surprised to find it so...having had their whole image of Texas formed by the old westerns movies (which were, in reality, shot in Arizona and southern California). Even western parts of the state, having been settled by pioneers from the older South, is generally "Southern" in outlook and philosophy..even if not in topography.
So, Ms. Batson, next time you pen an otherwise purely good read about the South, give the inclusion of Texas a bit more consideration. After all, even if you don't accept my rest of my arguments, ANY state which fought for the Confederacy (not only fought, but was one of the charter members), is famous for "y'all", and where black-eyed peas and fried okra are staples, has made its mark and earned its star in the Southern constellation!
A humorous but accurate dash through the South.......1998-06-20
I read this book years ago in its first printing. I was turned onto the book by someone I knew who had read it and I was not displeased. Every other book on the South that I had read seemed to have this "you would never understand cause you're not from the south" attitude that seemed to suggest a certain perfection that I know is not actually there. This book however was not ashamed at projecting a more complete picture that was nontheless extremely funny. Being from the deep south myself I know that we have the Mardi Gras Balls and "Old Money", but we also have trailer parks and Arkansas, and Ms. Batson doesn't miss this. I had fun with this book, and after writing this review I think that I will take my old copy off the shelf and look through it again.

Management: The New Competitive Landscape, by Bateman and Snell, has consistently discussed and explained the traditional, functional approach to management - through planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. But the 6th edition goes a step further, in defining and highlighting with icons, four "bottom line" practices that managers and companies must deliver to their customers: Innovation, Speed, Quality, and Cost. Bateman and Snell's: Management: The New Competitive Landscape, 6e has always been about a series of "firsts": first to have a chapter on diversity, first to devote a section to the environment, and first to relate a "bricks and clicks" theme to explain the challenges of managing in a New Economy. This new edition is no exception with the expansion of such timely topics as ethics and technology.
Management: The New Competitive Reality, 6e shows how managers must utilize the classic principles of management in combination with the practices of the "New Economy" to achieve managerial goals. By reinforcing these new business practices in context with the functional approaches, the authors deliver a unique theme amongst all principles of management texts - how to manage in ways that deliver results. ver results.

Book is great, but no CD!!.......2005-09-20
I bought this book online because it said that it was in great condition, and there was a CD with it, but when I got it the CD wasn't included!! I want my CD!!!
Pedagogical Excellence!.......2005-09-15
This book is unique in its pedagogical approach. Other management textbooks are just characterized with sound theoretical depth and textual density. However, "Management: The New Competitive Landscape" is distinguished by the capability of its authors to seamlessly blend the theoretical concept with practical, real-life advice using an exceptionally engaging conversational style. Holding a bachelor's degree in business administration as well as an MBA in Management, I completed several management classes and researched advanced management literature in many books. However, I decided to purchase this introductory management reference due to its unprecedented pedagogical style. When I opened the book in the store, I felt like attending a live lecture from the authors directly capturing their knowledge and experiential advice. Thus I learned from this book big time especially from the on-the-job perspective.

Looking back, John Edward now sees the early signs that he was destined to become an acclaimed psychic and medium. "There were times when I knew things I shouldn't have known," he writes. "Simple things like who was coming over, or who was on the phone." He knew events in family history that no one had told him about. He was inexplicably fascinated with television characters that possessed supernatural powers. He'd see auras around schoolteachers and hear voices that whispered true information in his mind. Eventually his gifts expanded into hearing the names of spirits "who'd gone to the other side." Finally, as a teenager Edward began to claim rather than question his psychic abilities and committed his life work to pursuing and learning about his gifts. Now that he has become a renowned medium (appearing on numerous talk shows, including Larry King Live), Edwards has written an entertaining "my life as a psychic" type of autobiography, packed with fascinating true stories. At the same time, Edward offers an engaging self-help book, teaching readers how to visit a medium and even showing seekers how they can recognize and develop their own psychic abilities. --Gail Hudson

Still Wanting More Answers!!!.......2007-07-28
For those who are touched by this book, I want you to know that there is something we can't explain. We all have paranormal abilities like John Edward, James Van Praagh, Sylvia Browne, and Char Margolis to name a few. The book is reassuring at times because it makes you feel like you're not alone in this world as some people might perceive us to be weird or strange. The book is about John Edward's biography and is ever evolving psychic abilities. He talks about getting depressed or iritable around negative events. I got this book probably before September 11, 2001 so it doesn't have anything to do with it. For me, I recognized that power and fear when the predictions come true. I'm not so much into contacting the deceased as I am concerned with the future but at the same time, our psychic abilities don't always work to our advantages like getting lottery numbers or picking the right mate. In fact, we can pick for others but we just can't pick for ourselves. John's honesty comes through in his writing and it's an okay biography as well as reassuring that this is not all there is but I want more answers especially about our past lives, our spirit guides, and why we're drawn to certain people. Maybe that could be his next book.
A Great Read!.......2007-07-20
One Last Time was terrific! John Edwards did an excellent job of explaining his gift with the world in a very pragmatic and humorous way. The explanations of the "unexplained", which may have happened to you or those close to you, are sensible and can provide even the most skeptical with a level of comfort not easily found.
fan of crossing over.......2007-04-21
john is a top medium his book is like been in the show well written and a comfort to read as all the others, his personality shines in one last time,i do believe there is more, another book the calling of your true self elizabeth anne bell is another book i could not put down it also rings with truth both well worth reading
Excellent Book.......2007-04-01
John Edward is a remarkable man. I loved this book because it made me feel that those that I have loved and who have gone to the other side are really still here with me.
Easy to Read and Interesting.......2007-03-14
I found while reading this book I could almost hear John speaking. It was really written in the same style as he speaks so I was comfortable with it from the beginning.
I liked the fact that it started from his beginnings as a child and progressed through what was at the time his current situation.
I would recommend reading this book first, before any of his others. It will give a better point of reference for his following books as he seems to refer back to it in some of his other writings. My wife tried to read his most recent book first and found it much easier to "get" him by stopping and reading this one first, at my suggestion.
Book Description
Despite acts of female heroism, popular memory, as well as official memorialization in monuments and historic sites, has ignored French women's role in the First World War. This book explores stories that were never told and why they were not. These include the experiences of French women in the war, the stories they themselves told about these experiences and how French society interpreted them.
The author examines the ways French women served their country - from charity work, nursing and munitions manufacture to volunteering for military service and espionage. In tracing stories about war heroines, but also about villainesses like Mata Hari, this fascinating study shows what these stories reveal about French understanding of the war, their hopes and fears for the future. While the masculine war story was unitary and unchanging, the feminine story was multiple and shifting. Initially praised for their voluntary mobilization, women's claims of patriotism were undercut by criticisms as the war bogged down in the trenches. Were nurses giving solace or seeking romance? Were munitions workers patriots or profiteers? The prosecutions of Mata Hari for espionage and HÈl'ne Brion for subversion show how attitudes to women's claim of patriotism changed. French women's relationship to the war called into question ideas about gender, definitions of citizenship and national identity.
This book is the first study of women at war to treat both their experiences and its representations, which shaped nationalism, war and gender for the rest of the twentieth century. It makes an important contribution to the burgeoning history of collective memory and of the First World War.
Customer Reviews:
We must understand how and why the Nazis grew to prevent future generations from making similar mistakes.......2007-07-12
I highly recommend Leonard Peikoff's Ominous Parallels. He analyzes the rise of the Nazis. The population in late 19th century Germany was dumbed down from the Hegelian school (following Kant's Critique of Pure Reason). German citizens acted mindlessly, with a heavy reliance on the 'will to duty'. Individuals did what they were told, for the good of the country. Then, a tyrant took advantage of the population, and well, you know the rest.
A lot has been written about Nazi Germany. Most of it has little value in helping us act today. Listing the atrocities in detail doesn't help us. What will help us, is understanding how and why the population of Germany preceding WWII (especially the Weimar Republic) allowed conditions to evolve to inhuman atrocities.
In the early 80s, Peikoff noticed disturbing parallels of the rise of the state (and the corresponding fall of the individual) between Nazi Germany and the modern USA.
I read this book over a decade ago. Peikoff's ideas were an eye-opener to me, and they cause me great pain as I witness a president acting as a king. The parallels are frightening.
History As It Should Be Written.......2007-04-15
The Ominous Parallels is a history book written the way history should be written. Leonard Peikoff focuses on the main cause driving the events behind Hitler and the popularity of Nazism: ideas. He rightly dismisses economic or deterministic causes. He instead traces the philosophical ideas entrenched in Germany by the early 1900s showing how these ideas made Germany rife for the takeover of a man preaching blind allegiance and sacrifice to the state above all else. Peikoff doesn't stop there. He then demonstrates how these similar ideas are being preached by the intellectuals in America. To truly understand the causes of Nazism and the way to fight the ideas that led to it, and could lead to further destruction in the future, this book is a must read.
Absolutely Brilliant.......2007-02-25
I can't say enough about this book. Rather than simply pointing out the usual claim that nazism was defined strictly by the hatred of Jews , Doctor Peikoff details the exact cultural state and philosophy that made such horrendous acts palatable to an otherwise ordinary citizens,ie. the German people. His comparison to the cultural and intillectual state of America today is chilling.
William Sekerak
Brilliant historical analysis.......2006-06-26
I have studied the causes of Nazism for years, and nothing compares to Leonard Peikoff's brilliant analysis. Dr. Peikoff integrates seemingly disparate subjects, from economics to art, from politics to physics, into a coherent whole which gives an excellent overview of the fundamental cause of Nazism. This is an excellent book for both the laymen and the professional historian or for anyone interested in the power of ideas in shaping history.
Brilliant Analysis of the Roots of Authoritarian Ideology.......2005-07-23
Ominous Parallels is a unique and revolutionary intellectual work by Dr. Peikoff, illustrating the role of philosophical ideas in shaping a society and its history. Using Plato, Kant, and Hegel as the antipode of Aristotle, he explains how their theories in opposition to reason, reality and individualism served as the framework for The Third Reich. Hitler sought obedient followers to carry out his "ordained will" and impose this on the world. Dr. Peikoff illustrates how he accomplished this.
In Germany many years before the rise of Hitler, philosophy replaced reason with faith, instinct, feelings or the wisdom of the German people in the name of the collective good as defined by authority. The individual became non-existent, subservient to the German race and fearful of committing the ultimate crime: an act of self-interest. Thus, without a mind to know the world and without a self to be concerned about, the German citizen became the obedient follower of Hitler's will to power and his mystical claim to knowledge and omnipotence in defiance of reason and reality.
Individual conscience and the concept of right and wrong based on the value of man's life were, according to the Nazis, instruments of selfishness and contrary to the interests of the German people. Thereafter, morality became what was right for the German people or Aryan race as determined by Hitler and the Nazi party. Individuality and self-interest were obliterated; the "organic whole" of the German race and people the principle of moral action.
As Dr. Peikoff explains, the violence, death, and annihilation that followed were consequences of the anti-reason and anti-individualism of the major branches of German philosophy and not random occurrences, merging together at the same time in history. Fascism and Nazism were not consequences of the innate depravity of the German culture, nor a collective deathwish, nor consequences of a Marxist integration of opposing forces. They were consequences of German philosophy, the Kantian and Hegelian influence that eradicated reason and enshrined self-sacrifice and service to others thus insuring a obedient populace.
While Ominous Parallels is relevant to any dictatorship or authoritarian regime, Dr. Peikoff points out that fascism and communism share the same philosophical base and that Hitler eagerly recruited former communists, believing them psychologically matched for Nazi ideology. In the sixties and seventies, the media advanced the theory that communism and fascism were polar opposites but Dr. Peikoff explains that they are branches of the same irrational, anti-reason, anti-individualist foundation. Both negate the power of the mind to know reality and sacrifice the individual to the needs and whims of society, obliterating the autonomous ego, and merging him into the "organic whole" of state power, embodied in an all-powerful charismatic leader a la Hitler, Franco, Stalin, Mussolini, or Castro.
As the first book by an Objectivist intellectual other than Ayn Rand, Dr. Peikoff follows in her illustrious path, showing how the role of reason and individualism are crucial fundamentals of any free society, and in contrast, how irrationality, mysticism, and altruism lead to the insane violence, savagery, and destruction of Nazi Germany.
While ominous parallels exist between Germany and present-day America, Dr. Peikoff speculates that the American people are still guided by reason and individuality and it is the intellectuals, who are destroying the country. Combine this with the surging popularity of Ayn Rand's ideas and their integration into the culture, and one can see the possibility of a new American renaisance of reason and individualism that can recapture the spirit of the Enlightenment and its respect for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Finally ý The Cause and Answer to Fascism.......2004-01-18
As a Jew, I have watched, read, and visited countless accounts of the Holocaust - but not one of them correctly identified the ideas that brought it about or the ideas that will prevent it from happening again. In some cases, I was first shocked by the accounts of survivors and then horrified when they offered as a solution the same ideas that created the Nazis.
"The Ominous Parallels" finally exposes the cause and answer to Fascism. Dr. Peikoff presents a compelling and cogent thesis on the evil of collectivism in terms of the fundamental ideas that shape our history by masterfully analyzing the intellectual and cultural climate that led to the Holocaust and its parallels to today's America. Along the way, he outlines the development of Western philosophy - from the glorious creation of the United States to the rise of skepticism, pragmatism, collectivism, and the Weimar culture. Broad philosophical, political, and cultural trends are analyzed and dissected according to their basic premises, as you will never hear in a history class.
Both those well read in and new to the philosophy of Objectivism will find this book accessible and the arguments reasoned out and supported by numerous examples. This is not light reading, however- I spent as much time pausing to digest and integrate the ideas in this book as I did reading it. Those unfamiliar with Objectivism may have some difficulty connecting the author's asides on abortion, physics, and religion to the central theme, but it does not detract from the overall message.
As Dr Peikoff states, it is impossible to predict the future or know whether the Holocaust will repeat itself - but it is certain that only by understanding and adopting a proper philosophy can America survive as a free country. If this book succeeds in teaching the world about the importance of ideas, then six million shall not have died in vain.

"The Ominous Parallels" by Dr. Leonard Peikoff is a brilliant study uniting philosophy and history to identify the fundamental cause of the rise of Hitler and Nazism, and more broadly, of fascism.
Dr. Peikoff's theme is that actions follow from ideas. With passionate dedication to truth he quotes from the writings and speeches of the principle architects of Nazi Germany to show the ethical premises guiding their political actions and programs. The evidence is clearly presented. And it leads inexorably to the conclusion that the same ideas which made possible the horror that was Nazi Germany, currently dominates the intellectual establishment of the United States.
"The Ominous Parallels" is both a warning and an alert. It tells us what we should do to avoid becoming a fascist state. It alerts us to how far down that road we currently are.
Dr. Peikoff's "The Ominous Parallels" is also a rallying point for all of us who care deeply about the future of our country and the freedom of its citizens. It helps us to recognize that "it could happen here" if we do not change our views regarding the proper beneficiary of one's actions.
A great example of what objectivists have to offer........2000-03-11
Are ther any John Galts coming up with a cure for cancer? and new math equation? anything? No No No. All we get from the objectivist is the type of balony found in Ominous Parrells.

Are there any John Galts coming up with a cure for cancer? and new math equation? anything? No No No. All we get from the objectivist is the type of balony found in The Ominous Parallels. A book for and by fanatics. Not science not history just the application of a crazy philosophy to produce a crazy book. The most mediocre people out there today are Objectivist.
Un-familiarity breeds contempt.......1999-12-12
While Mr. Peikoff has written a very thought provoking book, this book should be read with a very critical eye. I seriously question whether or not he is familiar with the material he references throughout this book.
Specifically, it is readily apparent that Peikoff has never thoroughly understood Nietzsche or the Greeks -- philosophers who he makes broad, sweeping remarks about. At least in the case of Nietzshe, Peikoff is so far off the mark with his understanding of Nietzschean philosophy that his remarks are almost comical as they don't just miss the mark, they quite often posit an opposite meaning.
I give this 3 stars simply because the skepticism, dissent, and critique of U.S. governement that "Ominous Parallels" instigates is not only worthwhile, it is necessary.
