a good book.......2001-11-12
It is a good book, but not great as his another one: Rock and Royalty, Versace/Avedon. If you are a fan of Versace, then it's worth to buy one.
A big MAGNIFICENT book full of real hunks and stallions!.......2000-05-26
If you're a female (or well, at least a gay), better brace yourself and get ready for a glossy, eye-filling page after page of the finest young men ever born and bred in the whole world! Those sexy studs are very artfully depicted here in a stylish vein by a very creative fashion designer like Gianni Versace and most of them are quite scantily-clad and some of them even completely naked. A very bold and unconventional piece of art that you can find on any coffee table! Too bad this handsome album is just plain too expensive for me to merely pluck right off a bookstore shelf!
Not Just The Men--The Photographic Inter-Melding.......1999-12-14
Okay, the males are stylish and handsome both--possessed of muscles, adorned with Versace's jubilant, expressionistic attire. But there's more expressionism in the photos themselves. I know of no other book where visual images (here, photos) are not just presented 1-2-3 in static procession, but where portions are repeated--echoed later on--blended with following photos--in a creative interweaving which can only be "art" in the definition of "dynamic combination of symmetry or order, and asymmetry or tension." A beach scene appears, then is blended with another scene later. And interblended with the written text, too. Rare is this twin-starring of word and image, plus this permutation-and-combination of images. Only in comics do word and image so vitally interact. So check out this book for its design-artistry, as well as its aesthetic dudes.....
What caught my attention...................1999-05-24
was supermodel Marcus Schenkenberg on the cover. That's why I brought it home! But when I opened it up, I was thrilled to see that every photo was marvelous and artful. Kudos and love to the late Versace, who created this brilliant piece of art.

Book Description
Film historian Bruce Rux posits that the film industry has long collaborated with a government disinformation campaign about UFOs, shaping and controlling knowledge about documented UFO activity. The book uncovers the conspiracy roots of government involvement in science-fiction/horror movies, from pulp-fiction and Lost World romances to films dealing with flying saucers, the planet Mars, mind control, abductions, transdimensional journeys, and extraterrestrials.
Written in a mock-serious tone reminiscent of Rod Sterling's Twilight Zone TV Series, and illustrated with old movie stills and posters, Hollywood Vs. the Aliens is a fascinating, fun read, yet delivers some startling findings. Rux reviews the facts known about UFOs and ancient technologies, and how they came to be discovered. Then he investigates the period between the 1930s and 1950s, focusing on CIA Robertson Panel's recomendation that Hollywood be used as a deflectionary tool against popular interest in UFOs. Government involvement in Orson Welles' 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast is discussed, as are the Disney and United Artists studios' early connections to patriotic propaganda. Early '50s movies like The Thing from Another World and The Day the Earth Stood Still show UFOlogical facts that only government sources could have known at the time. From there the book goes on to discuss recent releases and the ongoing depictions of aliens and UFOs, right up to Independence Day, Men in Black, and Mars Attacks!
Customer Reviews:
Bruce Rux better than the rest.......2006-03-30
Very well researched. This book definitely brings up a lot of questions regarding the use of propaganda with UFO's. I enjoyed reading this book almost as much as Architects of the Underworld.
Multiple factual errors fatally flaw a great idea.......2003-05-23
I was very eager to read this. The cover blurb grabbed me- "Rux posits that the film industry has long collaborated with a government disinformation campaign about UFOs." This had the potential to be a definitive work concerning the government cover-up of UFOs. Alas, it was not to be, and the mess that became this book could have been avoided. I wish I still had my copy, but I was so disappointed that I sold it. Had I thought of it, I would have filled the margins with notes as a warning to others.
The book has two basic sections, intermingled together very well. First is a very detailed analysis of dozens of classic and bad SF films. The 2nd area delves into the government's efforts to use these films to tell us either that there are no aliens out there, to add another layer to the government cover-up or to get us ready for an eventual alien contact of some sort. This is a very ambitious idea, and could have been very convincing. Unfortunately, I began to find factual errors in his film analyses. The number soon grew to well over 50 major errors in just his description of the films. This is unforgiveable in this age of VHS/DVD. All of the films he wrote about can be had in these formats to rent or purchase. A nagging question began to gnaw at me: "If he makes serious errors with films that are very easy to view/reference, how can I possibly trust his writing of something serious like UFOs?"
Truth be told, I just couldn't trust any of his thesis. On the UFO side, he gets the basic stories of Roswell, Barney & Betty Hill, Lonnie Zamora and the 1966 Michigan sightings wrong. These reports are easy to find in any good library. To get these and other reports wrong just makes the entire book worthless. I know quite a bit about UFO history and SF films, and to make such errors is sloppy and unforgiveable. Bruce Rux has written another book of interest to me, but I'm sure that his writing will be inaccurate for that one also. It's a real shame.
Bruce Rux Brings Solid Research To the Topic of UFO's.......2002-12-29
Bruce Rux has brought research on ancient world traditions, UFO's and modern government study of these subjects to a new level. Hollywood Vs. the Aliens conclusively shows the Inteligence Agencies manipulation of entertainment media in shaping public opinion on the subjects of UFO and extraterrestrial life forms. Rux gives several examples of government figures (including astronauts and scientists) who have spoken out on the subject of UFO's and ancient civilizations, and also shows how UFO activity was being monitored prior to Hollywood exploitation of the subject. A good scholarly work which is a refreshing change from most books on the subject.
MIXED BAG.......1998-06-30
It was hard to choose the number of stars for this book! The information in it is incredibly diverse and provocative, but it is arranged poorly. The index really stinks if you're looking for anything other than a movie or television show name -- for example, if you want to check on some of the (non-actor) characters mentioned in its pages. And if you're not completely familiar with all the movies or shows mentioned, you're going to be lost.
That said, the sheer range of material covered and the details given are encyclopedic. There could be more sources given for some of his allegations, but that's a lesser point. While it is in some places a difficult read, it is always interesting. I think this would make a good source book for someone who wants to look into this area further. But please, Mr. Rux -- if this is ever reprinted, work on that index! It's frustrating to KNOW you saw something on a subject several chapters ago, and not be able to find it in the index!

the definitive led zeppelin book from a renowned zep author.......2001-08-02
Packed with over 150+ b&w and color photos in it's 96 pages, this informative and visually stunning book follows each member of Led Zeppelin from their musical influences on through to their historic first rehearsal, and on to the tragic death of the late great John Bonham in 1980. The text of the book follows the band from their earliest gigs (with RARE photos of those gigs, of which about 85% are exclusive to this book) and is a fascinating account of Led Zeppelin live in concert. I've been collecting Led Zeppelin books/rare magazines for years and I have to say this one of if not THE best books I own on Led Zeppelin. A must for any Zep fan!

Customer Reviews:
A great book about action figures in general.......2004-06-28
This is a very nice reference book. Rather than giving a lot of detail about one type of action figure line, it provides a little history/information on lots of action figure lines. This book literally covers 1001 well know and more obscure action figure lines... it was very fun to read/reminisce. This is a hardcover book with 100s of color photos on full glossy paper. It contains at least one picture (and usually more) of virtually every action figure line. Most of the photos are small, but still worthwhile. I was pleasantly surprised to see so much information and so many pictures in such a small book (it is about 6" by 7", 350 pages, and a little over 1" thick). I collect mostly Star Wars and Mego figures, but often come across other figures when exploring. This was the perfect reference book for such a situation. This book also provides a general value for each figure line (the estimates seemed to be at least as good as other price guides). I bought my copy used for around $5 plus shipping (it arived in PERFECT condition). But, I'd say it is easily worth twice that... maybe even more.

Customer Reviews:
Short and sweet.......2007-09-02
I have read many management books, and many are great. However, what I like most about this book is that it is short and sweet. You can open it at any chapter, read it while having your first cup of coffee, and get some ideas (or reminders) about why you are a manager and why your employees are not.
Each short chapter addresses a separate management issue. Sometimes we're so busy being managers, doing the work, that we forget that we ARE the managers. It's our job to help others do the work...in our vision.
If you have never read any other book on management, nor have ever been a manager, then this book is probably not for you. I read these chapters as "reminders." "Oh, yes, I remember that!" As a manager, you will at some time, encounter every one of these problems or issues. Sometimes you have to remember that you are the damn manager, the boss, and it's your leadership which provides the direction. Or if you were my child, it would be, "Because I said so." But you don't really want to say that to grownups.
I have found that if things are rolling along, that I don't have any problems to address, then that is as it should be. I just stand back and let my people do. And that is essentially what Mr. Templar advocates. Let go and get out of the way.
A slick list of rules for ruling at the office.......2006-07-18
New or struggling managers will enjoy this practical, easy-to-read book of management tips, but experienced managers should take a look, too. Richard Templar writes in a "straight-from-the-cuff" style (no dry textbook terminology or dusty case studies here). He packs his manual with great, even if a bit obvious, lists of advice. We recommend this breezy, practical rulebook. To be a better manager, read it and ask yourself if you are still following the best practices. If you know what to do, are you doing it? If you don't know what to do, start reading.
A must for anyone who has to manage people.......2006-07-09
Management is 50%. The other 50% is hard work and getting people to do what you need them to do. This bookd helped me to become a good manager even after 5 years of managing.
Practical Guide to Successful Managment Behaviors.......2006-03-10
"The Rules of Management" is a practical guide to successful management behaviors. This would be a great book to use in conjunction with management text books at any business school or college. It goes beyond the typical description of management processes text book usually dish out and dispenses some logical, proven strategies to help managers succeed. This book does a good job of bridging "Leadership vs. Management" issues without actually making any discernment between the two. In fact, "The Rules of Leadership" would be a logical sequel to this series of books by Richard Templar.
Book was only Partially Interesting........2006-01-03
I generally read books for personal-enlightenment and discovery. What is interesting is that the rules that Templar puts down do not read as .. "Management," but moreso Leadership.
In that respect, I was given this book, and I expected something practical and less charismatic. While charisma is not a downside of a book, this book seems quite wishy-washy: all the rules are general, some rules go against each other, and there are more than one hundred for leading yourself. While I don't think Templar expects me to refer to it for all situations, there are no 'Eureka!' or 'Whoah!' moments of discovery to keep any of his rules with me for longer than until I put the book down.
Templar lacks a central theme. Though his work seems to describe Super-leadership (see: Manz's : "The New SuperLeadership" ), he seems to employ a kind of Charismatic Leadership: he tells us the rules instead of letting us figure them out. He uses none of these terms, and simply tells you the rule, why, and a quote. While this makes it a good index, I don't read indexes to learn.
This book is a tough book to review, since it does not read like a novel. It also does not keep the person closely tied to the book: I read it for a bit and found I could put it down. I didn't pick this book up for awhile. It's probably because I didn't find it intellectually stimulating.
Overall, it's not his fault that the book is a boring, yet enthusiastically delivered index of rules. Or maybe it is. It's not such a bad read if the compassionate rules and self-preserving rules are new to you, however.

Book Description
Temple Grandin, Ph.D., is a gifted animal scientist who has designed one third of all the livestock-handling facilities in the United States. She also lectures widely on autism—because Temple Grandin is autistic, a woman who thinks, feels, and experiences the world in ways that are incomprehensible to the rest of us.
In this unprecedented book, Grandin delivers a report from the country of autism. Writing from the dual perspectives of a scientist and an autistic person, she tells us how that country is experienced by its inhabitants and how she managed to breach its boundaries to function in the outside world. What emerges in Thinking in Pictures is the document of an extraordinary human being, one who, in gracefully and lucidly bridging the gulf between her condition and our own, sheds light on the riddle of our common identity.
Customer Reviews:
Temple Grandin is an inspiration.......2007-06-08
Temple Grandin's "Thinking in Pictures", is a must read for anyone who is affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders. Her book is well written and provides a lot of insight into what life is like for a young adult on the spectrum. This has been especially helpful for my husband and I as our first Aspie (we have four) is heading off to college and the "real" world. Definitely worth the money.
Amazing.......2007-05-21
Read this and Autism is more understandable (though still a mystery for those who do not have Autism) It also helps one to know better how to work with and interact with anyone having Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Aside from learning more about Autism, you will enjoy the writing and the stories used by the author.
More Conceptual than She Thinks.......2007-03-29
This book provides fascinating, intelligent, entertaining insights into the autistic mind.
Grandin is actually very conceptual, as the ability to use language requires, but appropriate concepts and contexts are difficult for her to define, seemingly due to a sensory system that leads to focusing on details rather than a broader scope. She and psychologists in general simply think she is largely non-conceptual due to their inadequate understanding of concepts, language, etc.
Actually, we all think in pictures; however, most of us use generalized, essentialized pictures most of the time for efficiency.
A grasp of how concepts are formed and organized, and how they are the essence of language, will help greatly. Best and easy to read for effective general psychology is "The Psychology of Self-Esteem," by Branden. Self-esteem is acquired from experience, not by choosing it. Emotions result from thoughts, not vice versa. The best and easy to read for the nature of concepts and language is "Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology," by Rand, and then for a comparison with other theories and how they go wrong "Evidence of the Senses," by Kelly.
must read.......2007-03-08
gives insight and hope for parents of kids with autism. also realization of what kids with aspergers can accomplish. this woman has a phd!!!
Temple Grandin and Eleanor Roosevelt would have loved each other.......2007-03-06
Dip vat, squeeze machine, restraining chute...Temple Grandin makes poetry of these unlikely words, and out of the whole of the English language. It's a spiritual miracle that we experience the noise and overpowering smells of the stockyards, yet also find in them the triumph of compassion.
Quite simply, Grandin is one of the greatest women of the 20th and 21st centuries. She should be draped with laurels, carried through the streets on our shoulders as we sing our praise-songs; she should be awarded keys to cities, MacArthur Foundation buckets of money, a Nobel Prize, a Presidential Medal of Freedom...and any other accolade we can think of to bestow on her. Did I say she was one of the greatest women? Check that. She is one of the greatest human beings of any century.
In addition, she is delightful company. She humanizes scary conditions, autism and asperger's, evoking in readers compassion and curiosity they might not have known they had. In this regard, Grandin is a superb spiritual guide with abundant personal experience and vast knowledge, which she generously shares via neat, accessible anecdotes and lists.
Reading Grandin, it is easy to imagine being in the same room with her, listening wide-eyed, and never wanting her to leave. Some nights, I confess that I fall asleep thinking of her as a young girl, joyfully flying those kites in the park...

Book Description
Bill Berkeley describes his fifteen years of reporting on Africa, providing a series of firsthand encounters with key players in six countries-Liberia, Zaire (now Congo), Sudan, Rwanda, Uganda, and South Africa
Since 1983 journalist Bill Berkeley has traveled through Africa's most troubled lands to seek out the tyrants and military leaders who orchestrate these nations' seemingly intractable wars. Shattering once and for all the myth that ancient tribal hatreds lay at the heart of the continent's troubles, Berkeley instead holds accountable the
"Big Men" who came to power during this period, describing the very rational methods behind their apparent madness. Weaving together insightful historical analysis and his own keen observations of ordinary men, women, and children struggling in the midst of terrible violence, Berkeley insists that what the world often sees as uniquely "African" interethnic troubles are in fact rooted in the international politics of colonialism and the Cold War.
The Graves Are Not Yet Full provides a convincing explanation for the last half-century's cycle of revolution and genocide in Africa, detailing the stirring history of these nations' quests for peace and independence over the last seventeen years. Berkeley's incisive analysis does much to bring recent African history into sharp focus while at the same time illuminating just what it is that allows societies-wherever they may be-to accept, and sometimes embrace, violence.

The Genesis of Genocide.......2007-03-24
The Graves are not yet Full: Race, Tribe and Power in the Heart of Africa
Atlantic Monthly correspondent Bill Berkeley has written a thorough and provocative account of the relationship among racial, tribal, and ethnic interests in African culture.
Drawing on the Rwanda genocide and the recent famine and mass starvation in Darfur, Berkeley says these developments are not so much the result of "age old hatreds" as they are the consequence of a history of tyranny going back to Leopold II of Belgium and the failure of the international community to focus on Africa except as an extension of the Cold War.
"For four decades U.S. policy toward Africa was driven almost entirely by our competition with the Soviet Union. Africans scarcely existed except as strategic pawns in the great global game. Democratic and Republican administrations alike defined their options narrowly: they seldom gave priority to initiatives that did not serve U.S.
Strategic interests. They often overlooked, excused, rationalized ---and bankrolled-- wanton repression, injustice, corruption and economic mismanagement by unelected
Leaders who were willing to oppose Moscow." (Berkeley, P. 78)
The CIA bears responsibility for much of Africa's problems, Berkeley says, and the media is to blame as well. "The press bears a measure of responsibility for this attitude. There is a school of thought that the overwhelming emphasis on bad news creates an unrepresentative image of Africa. There may be some merit in this. My own view is that a more serious, and sinister problem is not the quantity of bad news but the quality." (Berkeley, P.88)
Finally, he says, Africans bear responsibility for their actions. He says there is a culture of Corruption where everything is for sale and everybody has his price.
In all a gloomy, but well-researched, look at the problems of a continent which one ninth of the world's population calls home.

Tribalism and loyalties.......2006-09-15
I liked this book, more because it shed several spotlights on how several things happened that have contributed to past and present conditions in Africa. Much scorn should be rained down on several generations of leaders of the so called industrialized world for prepetuating the continued patronage of really bad people who seem to hold no regard for thier fellow man outside of thier clan or tribe. How divide and conquer is used repeatedly. When the cold war ended, Africa was suddenly abandoned as a front and more support for bad people was prepetuated. Five areas that continually recieve attention for good and bad, mostly bad are the key hotspots, we have to the northeast, Sudan and Somalia, though not much mention of the latter here, in the southwest; Liberia and all of the hate and discontent that a sucession of this leaning and that leaning despots created. In the centre, we have Rwanda, Zaire( the Congo) and Uganda and the very bottom, South Africa. Much of the cause for many of these turmoils seems to be a result of a half hearted attempt to extract the wealth from the country, and leave the mess for some one else to deal with, a general misunderstanding of history and the legacy of colonialism past and present.
Very Accurate and Very Disturbing.......2006-04-04
I have lived in East Africa, on-and-off, for over 5 years. Having lived in both Ethiopia and Uganda, I was blown away by Berkeley's accurate depiction of the modern history of this region.
This book is a must read for anybody wanting to learn about current affairs in Africa, and Africa's stance in the modern geo-political arena.
The Cold And Dark Continent .......2005-06-12
There is no escaping the seemingly overwhelming amount of evil and suffering that has gone on over the last century in Africa. Although it is not usually displayed on our nightly news casts, the continent has been in a state of near to constant warfare, criminal control and colonial game playing for far too long. This author attempts to give the reader somewhat of an overview of the situation and his views as to why it has and continues to take place. From plagues to genocide, Africa seems to have a monopoly on some of the worst that can befall man.
So how did the author approach the topic. It was interesting to me that he focused so much on the effect, both due to supposed active participation and more broadly due to ignoring the place, the U.S. has had there. I am not one who thinks of the past episodes of American foreign policy as all light and good, but if there is one part of the world that the U.S. has had the smallest effect on it has to be Africa. Just about every European country shy of the Vatican has spent time colonizing, "liberating" and in general messing around with governments and populations in Africa. If there needs to be a hard look at who should be getting most of the blame I think we need to spend a bit more time exploring our friends in Europe.
With this point said the book is dramatic. It is well written and many times interesting. Keeping the authors politics and biases aside, he does cover some truly horrible conditions that would make all but the most hard hearted individual think that we can do more to help. If you are looking for a book that would get you into the history of the problems in Africa then this is not that bad of a place to start even if the scope is a bit limited.
A Look At Another Side.......2004-01-17
This book is a stunning and gruesome portrait of genocide in Africa. Reporter Bill Berkely travelled to the war zones of Africa to meet the victims of racial violence and the inflictors of such violence. Berkeley's focus is more on the criminals and their actions that effect their nation. The interviews and experiences Berkely had with these evil individuals are fascinating and terrifying. If you have never come into real and forceful evil, you should read this book and learn what is going on on the other side. It is also good to be informed on this subject so that help can be given where it is needed.

Book Description
A unique and necessary reference for amateurs and professionals alike, with comprehensive coverage of the thousands of celestial objects outside our solar system—but within the range of two- to twelve-inch telescopes. The objects are grouped according to the constellations in which they appear, and their definitions feature names, celestial coordinates, classification, and a full physical description, along with hundreds of charts, photographs, and other visual aids. These, together with a star atlas, will assist stargazers at every level of experience in finding and identifying celestial objects. This volume, Volume II of a three-volume set, continues the alphabetical list of constellations, with entries from Chameleon to Orion. Also available are Volume I, an introduction and the beginning of the list of constellations from Andromeda to Cetus; and Volume III, which completes the sequence, from Pavo to Vulpecula, and includes an index. 1977 ed.

Out-dated but absolutely essential........2006-09-03
Yes, the coordinates are badly outdated. But anybody can get updated coordinates for any of the many thousands of astronomical objects described in this encyclopedia of observing. What's totally irreplaceable are the descriptions and star lore associated with all the objects.
What Burnham has compiled here is nothing short of miraculous. I know of no serious amateur astronomers who doesn't hold these three volumes dear to their heart. If you are a serious amateur and you don't own them, you are missing out. If you are a beginner, the introduction to Volume 1 is alone worth the purchase.
No, they are not pretty, and the typesetting is straight out of the Jurassic, but once one realizes just how much information is here, one realizes that there are no substitutes.
One word review: "Essential"
Need all 3 Volumes.......2003-03-08
There isn't too much this book has left out when it comes to information about stars, galaxies, clusters, nebula etc... These 3 volumes are more like an enclyclopedia set. Any star or other celestial object you want to know more about will probably be here. In fact it would take you more than a lifetime to study and find all of the different wonders of the galaxy and universe that are listed in these volumes. I never realized just how many galaxies had been documented along with variables, eclipsing binaries, star clusters, double stars etc... If you see a star in the heavens that has a certain luster or location or interests you in some way just look it up in this guide and you will find out all kinds of things about it that other books don't delve into.
A book with overwhelming information..........2002-07-11
Being an amateur astronomer I bought this and the other two volumes recently and I have found it indispensible. Im writing this review keeping solely the tyro's in mind, since one knowledgeable in astronomy would have already had this book. If you are getting interested in astronomy, this is the book to buy - it will surely deepen your interest. Get the book and take a journey through the starts that Burnham offers you in the first few pages.
There are plenty of astronomy books for amatuers with fantastic photos. And sometimes it can be intimidating to know what to buy. Burnham's book is worth every penny (and it doesnt cost much either). It does not contain colorful photos (though contains plenty of b&w photos taken from Lowell/Palomar and other observatories). All 88 constellations are dealt with in detail. First a list of double stars are given in each constellation followed by details of each bright star (including spectrum analysis for some). The book is set in "type-writer" font, so it gives a special feeling of reading some research paper.
A unique feature of this book, which is probably not found in any other astronomy book I have come sofar, is that, it also contains a perspective of a given constellation or star by several different cultures. Most astronomy books stop with Greek and Roman myths - giving a feeling that no other culture was knowledgeable in astronomy. Coming from Indian background, I found it very intriguing that Burnham mentions several stories and myths from Indian folklore (including those that I heard from my granny!). For eg, Varahamihira (c 100 AD?) in his "Brihat Samhita" compares Ursa Major (aka called "Seven Sages") to string of pearls. I was surprised to see Burnham mention this.
One other way I use the book is to first locate some star in the telescope (by lazily moving it around), notice the color, constellation and other characteristics, then look into the book about the details and compare with what you saw. Thats a fun way of learning.
Though more experienced astronomers would observe that some Burnham's values are of older epoch, this should not really bother a beginner. Burnham has certainly packed a wealth of information into three volumes. Again this is a book that will accompany for life on observing the wonders that are up above the sky.
Great bathroom material for the Deep Sky Observer.......2002-03-20
Robert Burnham (NOT the former Editor of Sky and Telescope, BTW) from the 50's to the late 60's spent many years working for an observatory on the tedious project of "blink comparing" countless photographic plates. In his spare time, he made and recorded observations of thousands of the most interesting objects in the deep sky. In addition he compiled a library of observations from other great observers, as well as star lore, scientific data, and personal refleciton. The result is a hodge-podge, somewhat out of date, collection that nonethless facinates.
Thousands of objects are cataloged by constellation, and hundreds are described in detail. When arriving at an object that seems to be the most familliar of its class (M13 for globular clusters, Sirius B for white dwarfs etc,.) Burham provides an essay on that class of objects (state of the art for its time, usually the 1970s)- often including very useful cross-references to other objects in that class.
Most useful to the observer are the countless orbital charts of double stars.
These books are an addictive way to pass the time. Most of the essays on featured objects are a few pages long, and can be read in the short "in between" moments that life is filled with. For two years I had one or more volumes of this series of three books in my bathroom, so as to pass the time a bit more productively learning about the sky. Needless to say, some of my bathroom trips grew a bit lengthy as I found myself plowing through Burnham's collection of personal observations, scientific data, and historical tales.
A rare book to be cherished........2001-03-23
Robert Burnham, Jr., spent twenty years at Lowell Observatory participating in a proper motion survey. During his tenure, he wrote this mammoth 3-volume work covering nearly every object visible in 2- to 12-inch telescopes. Each chapter, covering one constellation (both northern and southern hemispheres), begins with a detailed list of all stellar objects (double stars, variable stars, and deep sky objects). Then, he delves, sometimes rather deeply, into the more significant objects of that constellation, bringing together history, philosophy, and science to describe each one. His chapter on Sagittarius, for example, includes a 25-page section on the dense portion of the Milky Way blending current 1970s science with wonderful passages from Greek and Eastern philosophies, Native American legends, and the history of science. His prose for each chapter reflects the content he covers: lyrical prose when describing the "personal" aspects of observing objects, and readable, accessible language to delineate the science behind what we know about objects in the heavens. Moreover, each chapter has photographs of many of the stars and nebulae with telescopes and cameras ranging from a 5-inch astrograph to the 200-inch Hale telescope of Palomar Observatory.
Yes, the book is thirty years old and a little out-of-date. And, the typewritten font looks homely. But that's part of its charm. Burnham initially self-published this very personal book from his kitchen table. Literally. (Astronomy magazine published a very interesting "self-interview" by Burnham in March, 1982 which provides some background on his struggles to get it published.) From a small-press run of looseleaf copies in binders, it became somewhat of a cult classic among amateurs because nothing as detailed like this had been published before. (True, T.W. Webb's "Celestial Objects for Common Telescopes" was available, but it was last published in 1917.)
I know of no other book that combines personal, reflective commentary on "mundane" objects like the Big Dipper (officially, the Ursa Major Moving Cluster), and clear, concise descriptions of variable stars, Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams, and finder charts for objects like 3C273, the brightest quasar visible to amateur-sized scopes. (Trust me: spend the 30-minutes or so tracking this last one down at a star party and you'll have a line of folks waiting to look at a faint star-like object, the light of which left 3C273 long before the earth was even formed.)
One side note: if you're interested in the rather tragic life of Burnham, search for "Sky Writer", an article by Tony Ortega, published in the Phoenix, AZ "New Times" newspaper for September 25-October 1, 1997. All readers of Celestial Handbook owe Ortega a nod for the herculean task of piecing together Burnham's life.
