An excellent sampler, but no substitute for experience........2003-01-09
The first half of Michael E. Leek's Encyclopedia of Airbrush Techniques is devoted to technique and real-world examples of how techniques are used. The second half illustrates themes of professional work, and how they exemplify various techniques and design concepts.
To a total beginner, this book is filled with detailed steps and explanations, but does not qualify as a first how-to book. The examples and pictures describe brush technique well enough, but do little to enlighten how and where the masking is applied and removed. The photos range from simple to enticing, and are a good basis for practice ideas and experimenting with the airbrush.
To an intermediate airbrush artist, the techniques are a good example of method, and may help round out a repertoire of skills. Vivid selections of advanced professional airbrush work cry out for a more advanced book of technique combinations.

A systematic reference for modern costume.......1999-05-26
I felt that the black and white line drawings were inappropriately "chunky" and a bit misleading about the fashionable silhouette for certain decades. Nonetheless, this book is, as far as I know, the only reference that systematically describes the elements and accessories of 20th century costume, and judging by the decades for which I have personal experience, it is largely accurate. (Note: This review is based upon the 1982 trade paperback edition of this book).
O'Donnol Writes the Ultimate Period Clothing Source Book.......1999-03-11
I've always been into nice clothes, and several years ago I figured out that nice clothes hit their peak of style and class in the 20s, 30s, and 40s. Ever since then I have searched high and low for a book that had both written descriptions and adequate drawings of the clothes I like to wear. I found that book: "American Costume". The research that has gone into its writing was obviously exhaustive. Not only does the book have sensational drawings depicting the various styles from 1915 to the 70s, it also has extremely detailed descriptions of the styles. Through these thorough descriptions, the reader can not only see what the styles look like, but how they are made, what accessories to wear, and how to style one's hair to period authenticity. It is quite simply an excellent resource book, and and invaluable tool for anyone interested in costumes or clothes.

Book Description
This up-to-date manual will help you analyze the factors that affect the workout decision, understand the pros and cons of each possible solution, and determine exactly what leverage you have.
The authors discuss the real estate market and why the current climate is allowing for the easier consummation of workouts. They define a workout and describe an investment analysis approach to the initial determination of whether it makes sense to foreclose. How to formulate a workout strategy both from the borrower's and the lender's perspectives is then explained, with specific strategies given for workout negotiations. Also discussed in detail are the following possible pitfalls that each side must address: tax implications, bankruptcy, lender liability threats, and environmental risks of the real estate.
Among the key issues covered throughout the text are:
* The latest relevant decisions relating to bankruptcy and their effect on real estate workouts
* Federal regulatory considerations applicable to banks and insurance companies, as well as recent accounting developments
* The evolving area of lender liability in the environmental context

Book Description
What's the Matter with Today's Experimental Music? is based on the premise that contemporary music is suffering from a distinct lack of attention. It inspects and evaluates what is happening to musical experimentation, where things might have gone wrong and what can be done to resolve the problem. Intended as a supplement to surveys of music of the last forty years, it discusses not only the problems of musical content, but also problems of an extra-musical nature. Today's education and communications media are seen to be the main cause of the anonymity of contemporary music and suggestions are made to improve this situation. Leigh Landy investigates audio-visual applications that have hardly been explored, new timbres and sound sources, the discovery of musical space, new notations, musical politics, and the 'musical community' in an attempt to incite more composers, musicians and musicologists to get this music out into the works and to stimulate the creation of new experimental works.

Yummy Bears Tarot.......2007-05-30
This is my new favorite deck, and I own about a dozen. I look forward to my daily reading and find these cards are easy to connect with and very accurate and easy to read. They are elemental and whimsical at the same time. A very wonderful deck for beginners, old timers and a great teaching tool for kids. They are a sweet and tasty treat I enjoy every day. Try some ..a healthy and enlightining snack. Goes great with Learning the Tarot by Joan Bunning.Learning the Tarot: A Tarot Book for Beginners
Awesome oracle!.......2007-05-15
These tarot cards are wonderful! Great illustrations and meanings. The colorful tin container keeps them from getting bent. Can't say enough nice things about these cards.
Sweet Little Deck, That is Surprisingly Deep!.......2006-03-10
Everybody has to own a fun or silly Tarot deck... And this is a good one to own. J This was another gift from my mother, and apparently it was a hot seller as the woman she bought it from had only 5 decks and all 5 sold in less than 45 minutes. When you see this deck, you'll know why! It's a cute twist on traditional Tarot cards.
The Gummi Tarot is in most respects the same as The Rider-Waite Tarot. The pictures are more or less the same, sans a little detail, and one very important difference. The positions and roles usually played by people in the cards are now played by Gummi Bears. Instead of a beautiful woman leaning by the stream of knowledge in The Star card, a beautiful Gummy Bear is kneeling by the stream. The Tower card depicts two Gummi Bears falling through the air into an uncertain fate. The Death card is a menacing Gummi Bear riding a horse past the dead body of another Gummi Bear. One of my favorite cards is the 10 of Swords, where a deflated Gummi Bear is laying on the ground with 10 Swords sticking out of his back.
Is it silly? Well, yes. Will some find the replacing of all the characters in the Rider-Waite deck with Gummi Bears insulting? I'm sure some will. But it's a cute little deck and I think it's a creative, even funny take on a traditional theme. For collectors of Tarot decks, this is a great one to add to your shelves.
Of course, the burning question is, can you use this deck to read with? Many novelty decks out there suffer from not being able to use it as anything other than a display piece. I'm actually quite surprised to say that for a novelty deck, not only can use this deck effectively for reading, but the booklet that accompanies the book is surprisingly detailed. I own "serious" decks with a less informative booklet than this one has. Each card interpretation in the booklet contains a description of the card, the strengths of the card, both as a list and summarized as one bolded sentence, weaknesses, both as a list and again as a bolded sentence, and the task of the card. A brilliantly creative way to interpret the cards, I might add. I love the "task" assignment to each card, as that provides some clarifying direction for anybody who might be confused as to what the card means. So not only is this deck fun, it lends itself VERY well to readings.
I like this deck a lot. For a fun, silly deck, it is surprisingly deep. I suggest this deck to Tarot readers of all abilities, as it's fun for people who've been on the path for awhile, but still a great learning tool for the beginners. And for $10, this deck is a steal.

Latino Gunslingers.......2005-04-02
This was a well researched book. I applaud Edward Ybarra for all his hard work. I know that he went to a great deal of trouble to gather the documents and photos.
It is tough to follow at times as the book does not seem to follow a chronological order, and some of the fictionalized dialoge where the author interjects his own idea of what Juan Coy and others may have said is a bit rough. It does, however touches on an experience of our west too often ignored.
The shadow of Juan Coy good, bad, or indifferent was cast large and contributed with others to the portrait of a people in South Texas. He lived for nearly a century as the product of tall tales, and obscure legend.
This book will not likely be as popular as some other books by Michener and the like, but for some of us Texans who weren't always quite sure who to root for when watching the old westerns, and sometimes feel left out of the history our families helped build. It's a place to start.
Book Description
In the summer of 1777, while the British and the Americans were engaged in the bitter American Revolution, a massive campaign was launched from Canada into New York State.
Brigadier Barry St. Leger led a crucial expedition from Lake Ontario into the Mohawk Valley. The goal was to travel by waterways to join Lieutenant General John Burgoyne in the siege of Albany. But Leger encountered obstacles along the way. While laying siege to Fort Stanwix, Leger received word that Benedict Arnold was leading a massive relief column that was headed their way. Leger and his men retreated, and despite a later attempt to carry on, were never able to help Burgoyne. The Americans then destroyed the British-held Fort Ticonderoga, marking the end of the campaign.
The results of the failed St. Leger expedition were historic. Not only was the loss of Fort Ticonderoga was a major blow to the British war effort, but the campaign also brought about the disillusionment of the Iroquois Confederacy, and saw the founding of the infamous Butler's Rangers and the first major campaign of Sir John Johnson's King's Royal Regiment.

Spectacular .......2004-10-09
Leave it to Gavin Watt to get the point accross with dash. THe book is very well researched and the research shows in the writing.
We are introduced to many people in such a way that you feel you can shake their hand. The events mentioned are told with such passion that you can feel the action taking lace around you. It is all real.
This is the best book I have ever read about the campaigns in this region of NY. As a serious student of loyalists and a reenactor with the Butler's Rangers, this gives me a better understanding of how a person in my "real" unit would have behaved in the wilds of Ny in 1777.
Sorting Out The Turmoil of 1777.......2003-01-06
The Rebellion In The Mohawk Valley, The St. Leger Expedition of 1777 is the third book in Gavin Watt's trilogy about the turmoil that swept through that region during the American Revolution. There's a certain sense of dread and doom as one reads through the book, especially for Canadians who may identify with the hopes and aspirations of the Loyalists as the 1777 campaign unfolded.
The book goes into great detail about the victory at Oriskany by Crown Forces, balanced with their failure to take Ft. Stanwix.
It is intersting to note how casualty estimates vary according to which side was reporting, and how the Americans have taken the destruction of the Tryon County Militia and somehow cast it into a Rebel victory. There is, however a balance to the book, and people favouring either side can feel at home reading it.
Aside from the military aspects of the book, you get to know Joseph Brant, Sir John Johnson, Daniel Claus, Nicholas Herkimer and many other central figures. Great military history. Well written. Great biography. Definitely one for anyone interested in that time period.
"Rebellion in the Mohawk" - The Story Continues.......2002-12-18
Gavin Watt's latest contribution to the history of the American Revolution in the Mohawk Valley in New York (Rebellion in the Mohawk) is a wonderful account and the research matches that of his previous books. A very well-written, smooth reading account and once again, the author's research is impeccable. What is particularly appealing (to both scholars and the general reader) is the extensive footnotes which provide the little known (or previously unknown) background details that Watt and his co-author/researcher James Morrison provide along with deductive reasoning and especially the interjection of various small details of original accounts that add "spice" and some levity to the book; for example Watt including this rare quote from original documents relating "the Royal Yorkers being ordered not to wear their shoes when fishing!". Such aspects provide one with a true sense of what it would have been like at that time.
Overall, another excellent addition to the library of those interested in the American Revolution, irregardless of the exact phase; again a fine job by the author. I highly recommend it.
Rebellion In The Mohawk Valley.......2002-12-08
This book by Gavin Watt marks the current peak of his writings. "Rebellion In The Mowhawk Valley" is but the latest in his series of extremely thoroughly researched histories during the time of the American Rebellion.
This correctly and highly detailed, well balanced book is excecuted so well, that it is extremely readable; and quite a story as well. It was such a marvel to read that I was loath to put it down. I simply consumed it!
It occupies a special place amongst my historical reference books. I can't wait to read it again!
History brought alive.......2002-10-21
One of the best things about a well written history is its ability to bring the participants to life. Rebellion in the Mohawk Valley does just that for a little know battle of the American Revolution. From the patriots (or rebels depending on which side you feel yourself on) to the Loyal Americans fighting for their very homes and farms I now understand not just what motivated a group of people on both sides who lived through one of the most important events in world history, but I also now know a lot about how they lived, fought and felt. This was war between neighbors, friends and even family and this book's descriptions of that fact brings a whole new dimension to the story.
The author, a Canadian, and the American researchers and historians who contributed to his work have produced a balanced and colourful work. Rebellion in the Mohawk Valley clears up many long held misconceptions about this important battle and the events that surrounded it.
The illustrations and maps are very helpful. When combined with the descriptions of the places, people and events in the book I came away with a clear image of the events it describes and explains. The author clearly knows the time period and the locations in the book very well indeed.
One of the best features of the book are the extensive footnotes and the bibliography. From here one could go on to explore the entire American Revolution. It opened my eyes to the other side's view of the war and made me see this part of it in a much more open way, I'm anxious to do just that.
I'd highly recommend this book to anyone from early teens on in age because regardless of your degree of knowledge or interest in this particular battle of the revolution the quality of the storytelling alone makes it worth the read.
I just wish I could meet some of the people I came to know.

Book Description
On the tenth anniversary of the horrific genocide in Rwanda, an expert witness tells the first full story of the massacre's planning, with damning details of Western inaction.
April 2004 sees the tenth anniversary of the Rwanda genocide, an event generally acknowledged to be one of the most appalling of the twentieth century and potentially avoidable.
Linda Melvern's new book, the result of a decade of investigative work, is a damning indictment of almost all the key figures and the institutions involved. It reveals how the French military trained the killers, how the US is still withholding wiretap and satellite evidence that the genocide was about to begin, how the John Major government ignored vital warnings that the genocide was planned, how much Boutros Boutros-Ghali and the French government knew prior to the genocide and how the Security Council's shameful decision to evacuate the peacekeepers came about. In addition to these official sources, the author draws on dozens of witness statements yet to be heard at the International Criminal Tribunal, at which she will be an expert witness, and a sixty-hour confession from the prime minister in the government that presided over the genocide never before made publicly available and currently locked in the safe of the chief prosecutors at the ICT court.
Customer Reviews:
Flawed but important factual account of a tragedy.......2007-01-02
A couple of years ago, I realized that I had not educated myself on the tragedy of Rwanda, so I picked up this book. It's very helpful, but could be much better if it were better organized chronologically and also if it had a "scorecard", i.e. a basic outline of the major players. To its credit, it has maps, a chronology, and extensive notes, but the names of the major players are really confusing and that makes it hard to follow from time to time.
I would also have liked to see more substantive interpretation. There are repeated suggestions that the French government was supportive of the murderous Hutu regime, but that is never really explained or explored sufficiently. I would also have liked to see more discussion and analysis of the role of Christian churches.
But this, along with the films "Hotel Rwanda" and "Sometimes in April" is probably a pretty good place to start if you want to know what happened in Rwanda and what is happening still in other parts of Africa.
Excellent Information, Poor Presentation.......2006-05-12
I agree 100% with the review by Mike Kerrigan, but I am a little more severe than him in my rating of the book. The book truly reads more like a factual report of who said what to whom in what location and at what time of the day than like a telling of one of the most important historical events of the last few decades.
I definitely liked the fact that the book was loaded with information, but I would have liked it to be presented differently for an easier reading. For instance, the emphasis seems to be more on who said what than on what actually happened, which makes it difficult to understand the sequence of events; too many names are constantly mentioned and one gets lost and has to flip back frequently. Another thing that forces you to flip back often is the fact that the author often skips back and forth in time and place.
All in all, if you are familiar with the whole episode, you will most likely enjoy the level of detail of this book and appreciate learning who made which decisions. However, if what you want is a good and thorough introduction into the Rwandan genocide, this book is probably not the best as it might cause too much confusion, I would recommend Dallaire's book instead.
Excellent investigative reporting.......2005-08-08
Melvern's book is a deeply researched work that provides a detailed account of the events leading up to and throughout the Rwandan genocide. Her work with the International Criminal Tribunal clearly comes through in the book. This is both good and bad.
It's good because of the level of detail she provides and her strong ability to reconstruct events using an extensive collection of sources. Unfortunately the book sometimes reads like a report for the tribunal; it documents the people involved in orchestrating a particular crime and its details, but in a sterile way that doesn't seem to tap into the human emotions that the murders should evoke. Also, her familiarity with the people she documents caused the easy usage of a multitude of names in the book that were difficult for this reader to separate without a lot of page-flipping to recall their place within the story.
That said, this book won't disappoint anyone looking to understand the origins and events of the Rwandan genocide. The author does an excellent job of showing the failures of the Western response to the crisis without deflecting blame from the central characters within Rwanda who spent years planning and executing the genocide.
This book is probably the perfect compliment to `We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will be Killed With Our Families: Stories from Rwanda.' This book is less detailed than Melvern's work, but focuses on documenting the genocide through the stories of survivors and thus provides more of a human element.
How the world failed Rwanda........2005-07-24
Indeed the world did fail Rwanda as the author points out in the book about the genocide of the Tutsis in Rwanda. First off, Egypt and France sell huge quantities of arms to a government in a civil war. The French even send military advisers to train the Hutu Power militias. This advisory team has the intials C.R.A.P., something easily indentifiable with the French. The British and Americans downplay the fact that a genocide is about to occur and even urge no U.N. peacemakers be sent to the country. Boutros Ghali-U.N. Secretary General and one of those who earlier sold weapons to the Rwandan Hutus downplays the possibility of large scale killings and genocide. When the genocide does occur, they are in disbelief and don't react for two months while 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus are killed. Finally when the bankrupt Hutu Power regime is in its last gasp, the French send humanitarian assistance to the Hutus.
As the author shows, there is plenty of blame to go around. The Americans and British prevented help from being sent to prevent a genocide. The French supported a genocidal regime, and in my opinion don't even deserve to be on the Security Council. Hutu Power hopefully has been consigned to the dustbin of history. The U.N. is a paper tiger with feckless authority. The world did indeed turn its back on 800,000 Tutsis in Rwanda. A good read about a tragic event.
The Rwandan genocide of the spring and summer of 1994 has.......2005-01-09
spawned a rich and growing literature. This account, focused mostly on events on the ground, offers little new information about the international context and, unfortunately, covers only the first chapter of these grim events, ending with the July 1994 military victory of Paul Kagame and his Tutsi-dominated Rwandan Patriotic Front and the start of a chaotic exodus of hundreds of thousands of Hutus to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Despite these shortcomings, Melvern, a journalist who has written before about Rwanda and the UN, provides an authoritative account. Breaking new ground, she documents the extensive preparation for the genocide by extremists within the government of President Juvénal Habyarimana going back at least to 1991. When the genocide began, they had bought and distributed the equivalent of one machete for every three Hutu males and, with breathtaking cynicism, manipulated the media and state institutions to stoke anti-Tutsi passions to a fever pitch.

An excellent book to be used in the field........1999-01-22
An excellent book in terms of the text and photographic material, this book is small in size and makes it easy to carry around in the field. The text is written in simple English, making the information both precise and concise.Technical terms are kept to the minimum, making it user friendly for both beginners and experienced ornithologists. The description of the identificatory features are brief, focusing only on the important field characteristics. The bird calls and songs are also described fairly accurately, judging from my own personal experience as an experienced amateur field ornithologist here in Peninsular Malaysia. This book compliments the existing field guides in the region. The photographs are excellent in terms of quality and certainly help in the identification of birds since photographs show colour and jizz of the bird accurately, which in some cases may be difficult with line drawings and paintings. It is indeed comendable to note that the majority of the photographs were taken under natural conditions in the wild as the surrounding habitat is also shown. Though some of the birds were photographed in captivity (e.g. the hornbills, partridges and some pheasants), this still serves its purpose for accurate identification. It is a very handy book to have for visiting birdwatchers to Malaysia and Singapore who will find the descriptions and the photographs good. Some of your identification problems may be solved instantly.
