          Book Description

Usually the biggest struggles (and the biggest laughs) are over the smallest things, and nowhere is this truer than in households with kids. The latest Baby Blues collection, Baby Blues Unplugged, overflows with all of the familiar domestic discord and chaos that has made this venerable family comic strip such a phenomenal success. In one strip, Hammie makes skis out of hot wheel tracks and two hair scrunchies and careens down a mountain of couch cushions. Meanwhile, Zoe carefully deliberates whether she wants her bath with or without bubbles, finally telling her Dad, "How about a regular bath with bubbles on the side'"For more than 12 years, Baby Blues has been providing parents with a much-needed laugh-a-day as they battle the daily challenges of keeping pace with their kids. Today, it's read by nearly 40 million parents and kids. It appears in more than 750 newspapers in 25 countries and 14 languages . . . and on refrigerators of households the world over.

5 out of 5 stars Baby Blues Rules!.......2007-03-12

I just love Baby Blues. I can't get enough of it - I have the entire collection, and can't wait for the next one. And, I'm not a Mom - so it's not that you have to "relate" to get it...the humor is universal!

5 out of 5 stars A skewed yet satisfying look at travails of harried parents.......2002-07-12

Baby Blues Unplugged is the fifteenth collection of uproariously funny Baby Blues newspaper comic strips syndicated in 750 newspapers, 25 countries, and in 14 languages all over the world. A skewed yet satisfying look at the travails of harried parents and their two children (an elementary-age girl and a toddler boy), who seem determined to test every limit there is in this laugh-out-loud compilation. A little gross humor concerning bodily functions appears, as parenting young ones is most assuredly not meant for the hygienically squeamish, -- but overall Baby Blues Unplugged is good clean fun!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Bunch of Laughs Once Again!.......2002-04-11

ONce again, Kirkman and Scott have hit the nail on the head as far as new parents go. Zoe and Hammie are up to their usual tricks in this scrapbook, only they are a little older now and into the toddler/preschool age and it's just hilarious! I have 3 kids of my own and this brings me more and more laughs.....

Especially the one where Zoe says, "This doesn't taste nearly as bad as it smells!" I can certainly relate. These cartoons just get funnier and funnier and I will certainly buy every book that comes out! Don't miss this one if you're a Baby Blues fan or if you have any kids or grandkids or want kids someday!

After you spot a dozen of your relatives among these candid portraits, you'll see why the great apes are called our close cousins. The portraits on the back cover show a frowning gorilla looking at a smiling one, an inquiring chimpanzee, a smiling orangutan gazing skyward, and a fashion portrait of a wet bonobo.

2 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor: NOT a pretty sight. .......2007-02-28

This is an interesting, knowledgeable, but very short and skimpy, paperback book by a professor of neurobiology whose perspective is that of a primatology/evolutionary psychologist. The book contains some tiny photographs of the primates in question. It is a decent addition to the collection of anybody who is obsessed with learning every last thing about our various ape relatives.

My complaint/concern is that the author's description of the book, and the example photos shown on Amazon, might lead one to expect it to contain high quality photographs. Instead, what you get is a tiny paperback of miniscule, grainy, terribly reproduced amateur black-and-white photographs by the professor, many of them shot at the zoo.

Do NOT be deceived by the lovely color photographs in the publicity. There are no color photographs, or well-reproduced photographs, except on the front and back covers. Really, this has the feel of a home-made vanity press kind of book.

For a more thorough treatment of the topic of human/ape nature, consider reading Frans De Waal's "Our Inner Ape". De Waal also published a book of gorgeous photographs of primates. For a more thorough exploration of evolutionary psychology, see Pinker's How The Mind Works.

            Book Description

New Digital Cinema: Reinventing the Moving Image tracks the evolution of contemporary cinema as it intersects with the formerly separate realms of film-making, video art, music video, animation, print design and live club events to create an avant-garde for the new millennium. Building on the premise that we are witnessing the most extensive reworking of the role of images since the inauguration of cinema, due to the advent of desktop film-making tools. The book opens with an investigation of digital cinema and its contribution to innovations in the feature film format. While examining animation/live action hybrids, the gritty aesthetic of the Dogme ninety-five film-makers, the explosions of frames within frames and the evolution of the 'ambient narrative' film. The book then moves on to explore the creation of new genres and moving image experiences. What we know as 'cinema' explodes beyond the confines of the movie theatre and television screen into new venues and formats.

              Book Description

This long-awaited revision of this best-selling book has been completely updated to meld the classic content of previous editions with the latest in music theory and research, and contains a fresh focus on multicultural music. National music standards are teamed with the comprehensive survey of professional research previous users cherish, and linked to a wealth of activities for using music—including, in this edition, opera, classical music, and folk music—and movement experiences with children from birth to age six. Sections on developmentally-appropriate practice present concrete experiences and activities for sharing music with all children in an inclusive environment in which the enjoyment of music is seen to be paramount. Reference sections, at the end of each chapter provide more than 90 new, current references to professional literature and help back up chapter content with the latest information on theory, appropriate musical content, activities, and more. Music from Around the World sections in every chapter highlight the exceptional diversity of music—and music’s potential for encouraging cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity. Extensive appendices of songs, books lists, glossaries, keyboard diagrams, fingering charts, and ideas for creating classroom-made instruments constitute an invaluable source of background and resource information for teaching music—and make it easy for teachers-to-be to create a rich, nurturing musical environment in their very first classrooms. For pre-service and in-service elementary school music teachers.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect science and read-aloud book........2001-09-30

A wonderfully succinct overview of the blue whale and it's habits.

The clear, sweet prose makes delivery of the content easy, and the very fine, soft illustrations demand repeated veiwing. My Preschool and Kindergarten ESL students found it highly engaging.

If there's a better science and read-aloud book around I'd really like to know about it. TEN stars.

Follow this book up with the superb "Is a Blue Whale the Biggest Thing There Is?" by Robert E. Wells. Wells' book uses the whales' size as a starting point for exploring the size of the universe and other very big things (the second step involves putting a hundred blue whales in a really big jar). Read my review of Wells' book if you like.

I'm a whale researcher who has spent much of the last 12 years studying blue whales in the North Pacific. I'm also a mom who loves children's literature. Rarely do I see a book that is so accurate factually while it is captivating and magical! The illustrations are beautiful. I highly recommend it to anyone who has children who are facinated by whales.

                      Book Description

Here the local vigilante is a farmer's wife armed with a pistol and a Bible, the most senior member of the volunteer fire department is a cross-eyed butcher with one kidney and two ex-wives (both of whom work at the only gas station in town), and the back roads are haunted by the ghosts of children and farmers. Michael Perry loves this place. He grew up here, and now -- after a decade away -- he has returned.

Unable to polka or repair his own pickup, his farm-boy hands gone soft after years of writing, Mike figures the best way to regain his credibility is to join the volunteer fire department. Against a backdrop of fires and tangled wrecks, bar fights and smelt feeds, he tells a frequently comic tale leavened with moments of heartbreaking delicacy and searing tragedy.

This was a great book. Some scenes left me teary-eyed from laughing, and some that were very poignant.
A nice reflection on life's up's & downs from a small town perspective.

Nice adventure. Reminds me of sitting on a deck listening to a good storyteller-real stories. True to life. Honest. I felt the small town as many seperate tales as opposed to a story about a small town.
might be to real for some- but it portrays a stark reality for those of us who aren't exposed to the many ways life does happen. Enlightening and endearing.

5 out of 5 stars Introspective in the matters of the human psyche.......2007-01-31

I lived the first 30 years of my life less than 30 miles from New Auburn, Wisconsin. So when I fortuitously discovered that the author hailed from the same neck of the woods, I promptly purchased the book from Amazon.

When it comes to reading for pleasure I read at a snail's pace. A John Grisham novel typically takes me several weeks to read. By comparison, I actually read this book at record breaking speed. It was impossible for me to set this book down for long.

There were times when I was nearly rolling on the floor laughing but there were even more times when I literally shed a tear or two. Most books don't engage me emotionally to this depth but then again most books are not written by such an insightful person,
Especially when it comes to matters of human nature and mortality.

And yes, mortality is an issue that this author brings to the fore on many occasions. In fact, if I had to sum up a central reoccurring theme it would be this. We humans are on this planet for a very short time and are balancing on a very thin and precarious wire each and every day that we rise from our beds.

I never felt that the author was an especially cynical person but rather a realistic one who chose to contemplate death as he continued to learn how to help others to live. His choice of an altruistic occupation simply confirms the lesson that many wise persons have learned, that "there is more happiness in giving than in receiving."

This book moves quickly with plenty of realistic and graphic imagery of his experiences in the rescue field interacting with scores of colorful characters. The author is an excellent wordsmith and is incredibly introspective in the matters of the human psyche. I am hooked and intend on reading his other offerings.

                          Book Description

Development of the Leopard 1 can be traced back to November 1956, when the operational requirement for a new battle tank was formulated by the Federal German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr). Originally a Franco-German project, the tank under design was named the 'Standard-Panzer'. The French later dropped out, however, and on 1 October 1963 the 'Standard' tank was officially named 'Leopard', an appropriate choice considering Germany's wartime pedigree with the formidable Tiger and Panther. This book traces the development and service record of the Leopard 1, detailing its control systems, modifications and variants.

                          3 out of 5 stars A compromise.......2001-11-19

As with all of the Vanguard New Military series, this book is a compromise. It is not a photo book with line drawings for modelers, though it does have some color drawings. The mini history is good, covers all of the varients, but due to space, is short.

What irks me the most is that the cut away is hard to see the inside. I like to see what the inside of the vehicle looks like, it is very hard to do with this book & all of the others in this series. There should be line drawings of the inside from top, left & right perspectives. That would move this book into a five star rating. The photos are good, detailed, clear. Not much else is available at this time, a good addition to a collection.

4 out of 5 stars The complete Leopard 1 reference.......2001-04-17

This book is the main Leopard book you need. It covers the development of the first Lepard 1 in 1965, and gives you all the details of the version up to the Leopard 1A5. I also covers foreign versions and other versions made with the Leopard chassis. It includes colorful illustrations from Michael Badrocke, on of Britain's leading illustrators of military and other high-tec equipment.

The only reason why this book only got 4 starts, was because the rest of the book is only in black-and-white.

But the information is worth it for a Leopard 1 enthusiast!

                            Book Description

In this penetrating book, Jean Stefancic and Richard Delgado use historical investigation and critical analysis to diagnose the cause of the pervasive unhappiness among practicing lawyers. Most previous writers have blamed the high rate of burnout, depression, divorce, and drug and alcohol dependency among these highly paid professionals on the narrow specialization, long hours, and intense pressures of modern legal practice. Stefancic and Delgado argue that these professional demands are only symptoms of a deeper problem: the way lawyers are taught to think and reason. They show how legal education and practice have been rendered arid and dull by formalism, a way of thinking that values precedent and doctrine above all, exalting consistency over ambiguity, rationality over emotion, and rules over social context and narrative.

Stefancic and Delgado dramatize the plight of modern lawyers by exploring the unlikely friendship between Archibald MacLeish, who gave up a successful but unsatisfying law career to pursue his literary yearnings, and Ezra Pound. Reading the forty-year correspondence between MacLeish and Pound, Stefancic and Delgado draw lessons about the difficulties of attorneys trapped in worlds that give them power, prestige, and affluence but not personal satisfaction, much less creative fulfillment. Long after Pound had embraced fascism, descended into lunacy, and been institutionalized, MacLeish took up his old mentor’s cause, turning his own lack of fulfillment with the law into a meaningful crusade and ultimately securing Pound’s release from St. Elizabeths Hospital. Drawing on MacLeish’s story, Stefancic and Delgado contend that literature, public interest work, and critical legal theory offer tools to contemporary attorneys for finding meaning and overcoming professional dissatisfaction.
