5 out of 5 stars Great Balance of Text & Photos.......2005-12-28

This review is for the paperback version of the book, which I loved. It has a lovely balance of terrific photos & explanations of the various sources of the featured gems. It serves as a nice beginning reference when you have heard the terms sapphire & red sapphire (huh? I thought red gems were rubys or spinels) and would like to know more about which gems are related to others.

And did I say the photos are just wonderful? Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning photography; an amazing collection.......2004-05-05

"The National Gem Collection," by Jeffrey E. Post, features photographs by Chip Clark. The book is a beautiful celebration of the title collection, which is part of the Smithsonian Institution. The informative text discusses the history of the collection, facts about types of different gemstones, and specific pieces in the collection.

The full-color photography is really stunning, and brings a rich assortment of gems to glorious life. Some of the historic pieces pictured are the blue Hope Diamond, the diamond Napoleon Necklace, the Hooker Emerald, and more. Also shown are a colorful collection of "fancy" diamonds, a rare red diamond, the 858-carat uncut Gachala Emerald, the delightful "pink tutu" (a band of dainty rose quartz crystals on a large smoky quartz crystal), a dazzling group of fire opals, a lapis lazuli carving from Afghanistan, and more.

I appreciate how the book celebrates gemstones at various stages: uncut, cut, and set in artfully crafted pieces of jewelry. Many different types of gemstones--aquamarine, garnet, spinel, chrysoberyl, turquoise, etc.--are covered. Features such as a scanning electron microscope photo of the inner structure of an opal give the reader a deeper understanding of the science behind gems. From start to finish, this book is a marvelous feast for both the eyes and the brain.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2001-09-30

This is a beautiful book with lots of interesting information on the gem collection.

5 out of 5 stars Superlative Photography & Informative Text.......2001-08-30

If you have visited the National Collection and want a souvenir to remind you of the stunning array of unique World Class Gems then this is the book for you. Both the format of the book and the superlative quality of the photography make this book the next best thing to being in the exhibition hall. There is a fairly light weight coverage of the gemmology in the text, but it mostly focusses on the history and ownership of these fabulous gems. The National Collection is unique, no where else in the world is there such a concentration of fabulous jewels with such an interesting history, with the possible exception of the British Crown Jewels in the Tower of London. This book is a fitting celebration of such a marvellous collection.

5 out of 5 stars very nice to peruse.......2001-06-26

This book is more suited to enjoying the pictures than the text, but both are fine in every way. Almost all the stones in the book have exceptional color - or colors as the case may be. The front cover, going roughly from top to bottom counter clockwise, features a 99.82 carat fluorite, sitting on top of the 858 carat uncut Gachala Emerald (and the original cover looks way better), the lower left features a 34.07 carat red spinel from Mogok, next is a 52.26 carat calcite, and to the right a 17.85 carat diamond crystal from Murfreesboro, Arkansas. The back cover has a spectacular 181.9 carat Cooper Pedy white opal, that I initially mistook for a black opal. This book is published by Harry N Abrams, Inc. of New York, and is well up to this company's superior standards - and that also helps to explain the rather high price. The book is divided into six sections: an introduction, some gems of signficant historical interest, a chapter on diamond, corundum and beryl, a chapter on other important stones, one devoted to stones with special properties (eg opals, cat's eyes and star sapphires) and finally ornamental gems. The appendix is also very useful and informative.

It is very helpful to use this as a reference for benchmark color. There is little or no commentary on evaluation, appraisal or strategic purchasing.

This book is expensive but there are few others like it. Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Graves is hovering around, hoping to foment some problems in the ranks of the trust. While that is going on, we get the back story of several of the pivotal, or presumably pivotal characters that Graves is gathering and influencing with his mystery briefcases and past ties. This includes minutemen both new and old.

5 out of 5 stars killer, in every sense.......2007-03-07

This is the sixth installment of the trade paperback editions of the "100 Bullets" comic books series, covering issues 37-42. It is difficult to review without giving away parts of the plot, and in noir literature this good, that would be as criminal as most of the characters. Suffice to say that Azzarello's writing is in top form, as in the artwork by Risso. Azzarello and Risso pack an incredible "one, two punch". The story line for this series is full of twists and sub-plots, as a good noir novel should be. The artwork creates moods that accompany perfectly, frequently taking slightly grim or humorous side-tracks in the 'extra space' of the panels. If all graphic novels and comics were as well written and drawn as this there would be no question as to whether it was an art form to be taken seriously (not that there really is, in my opinion). While all of the single trade editions could stand alone, why would you want to do that to yourself? I don't recommend starting here.... start with number 1, read this one after number 5, and before 7. You are going to want to read them all so you might as well do it right.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best OF The Series........2005-10-28

This 100 bullets collection is one of the best pieces of art and crime noir on the comic shelf. This collection features six stories following six of the most important characters in the series, dizzy, cole burns, lono, graves, benito, and wylie. It has some of the best short stories i've ever read. This is Azzarello and risso at their upmost best. Awsome.

5 out of 5 stars High quality crime comic.......2004-03-14

This is the first and only 100 bullets Trade PaperBack that I've read, so I don't think I got all the context, but I still think that Six Feet Under the Gun is a good stand alone collection. I tend to read about comics that I'm interested a lot through reviews online before I buy them, so I had an understanding of the basic premise of "100 Bullets" and given that small knowledge, I found Six Feet Under the Gun to be pretty accessible.

This is basically a collection of six 22 page stories about individuals from the "100 Bullets" world. Unfortunately, there aren't any origin stories, and none of these are particularly expositive of the characters personal history. They all just show something important happening to the character which sets them onto a different path. It's important to know that this story utilizes the "I (Agent Graves) give you 100 Bullets to kill this man who ruined you" device very, very sparingly; these stories enrich existing characters. The characters are: Dizzy Cordova, Agent Graves, Lono, Wylie, Cole and Benito.

I don't know much about art from a technical standpoint, but I think that Edwardo Risso's artwork is pretty cool. As an interesting factoid I found out, Risso is an immigrant from South America and he speaks Spanish, so the writer, Brian Azzarello, has to find a different way to communicate ideas to him.

I don't have very much experience with crime comics; I've read the "Preacher" series and a few other graphic novels. I didn't think that this TPB was very objectionable, it's profane and mildly violent, although not like Preacher is. I wouldn't consider giving it to small children, although mature people can handle this. Six Feet Under the Gun, a good set of stories, highly reccomended.

4 out of 5 stars Annie in 1934.......2006-11-20

This book is a collection of all 365 "Little Orphan Annie" cartoons printed in 1934.

The year starts off with two con artists who pretend to be Annie's parents to get their hands on a few of "Daddy" Warbucks' millions, a plotline that was re-used as the plot for Broadway play and the 1982 "Annie" movie. Unlike the play or movie, the con artists are victorious in the comic strip and get full custody of Annie.

Things then go from bad to worse, as Warbucks' business goes bankrupt due to the Great Depression, and a scheming, publicity-hungry politician gets Warbucks sent to jail for life. Annie is then left to fend for herself as her lowlife "father" forces her to work for his mob, while underneath the constant threat of being killed if she doesn't do exactly as the gang desires.

Harold Gray handles these situations in his usual masterful style, with much questioning as to the nature of greed, justice, and the indomitable human spirit. Overall, a very good read which makes it clear why "Little Orphan Annie" was one of the top three most published comic strips in 1934.

Oliver Warbucks runs into difficult times here, and almost loses his fortune. He is framed, convicted and deserted by almost everyone-notice I said almost.

Annie never loses faith in her beloved,"Daddy." She goes into places no child usualy goes to bring out the truth and discover the guilty.Warbucks may still be broke at the end of the year, but he knows he can never despair completely when his darling Annie is there to encourage him.We all need someone like that in our lives.

              4 out of 5 stars Peter Greenaway.......2001-11-19

A good way to clear the table of unwanted guests is to mention the name Peter Greenaway. These five syllables are known to cause pink cheeks and raised voices in both lovers and haters of pretentiousness in cinema. I would then recommend the perfect gift to these "art lovers": Peter Greenaway: Interviews, edited by Vernon Gras and Marguerite Gras.

One of the many aspects of Greenaway's work that I admire is the way he always causes walkouts during screenings of his films, which include The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover; A Zed and Two Noughts; and The Belly of an Architect. At every Greenaway film I have seen there have been noisy exits by disgusted moviegoers. Not only that, but total strangers have come up to me in the theater lobby and said, "Isn't that the worst movie you have ever seen?" That alone makes me a Greenaway fan for life, aside from the fact that his work is completely involving, beautiful, and lots of fun. Especially fun is Greenaway's obsession with lists and numbers, as well as his witty commentary on nature and the way that systems control information -- and life itself. A far cry from minimalism, Greenaway's films are all works of excess. And this (very) British filmmaker knows how to use multimedia in his films -- which brings up the subject of pretentiousness.

Strangely, for a man who has made over 20 films, Greenaway seems to think that after a century, cinema is pretty much a dead medium. He feels that literature and especially painting are way ahead of film, that the one thing holding back cinema is the Hollywood narrative. The problem with cinema is that it relies on books or stories, when it should be more like a painting -- which, according to Greenaway, gives a more complete picture emotionally and intellectually than a standard narrative.

Peter Greenaway is a fascinating collection of interviews from various magazines and newspapers. In some of the interviews, Greenaway comes off as an English University professor; in others as an arrogant lecturer. Personally, I like this "arrogant" stance, because his anger and frustration is pretty much on the mark when it comes to what has become of commercial cinema: generic stories shown at the local mall. The only major problem with this volume is that it doesn't include a filmography or bibliography.

In addition to making movies, Greenaway is also a painter, novelist, and curator. His latest project is Tulse Luper's Suitcase, which is a combination of cinema, CD-ROM, and a website. One can view this project as it unfolds at www.tulseluper.net

                    Book Description

Take full advantage of the tax code and avoid taxes, saving as much as one-third of the profit on the sale of a property.

Real estate investment is the best tax-advantaged road to wealth available today. Through depreciation, real estate investments have the potential to provide tax-free income for years, even shielding other income from taxation. And when the time comes to sell off the investments, capital gains taxes can even be legally deferred or eliminated-that is, if investors know the secrets.

Richard T. Williamson, Esq., a renowned real estate attorney, has compiled these tips and more into a nontechnical, straightforward look at how individuals can use the tax code to their advantage. From the simple to the sophisticated, the author explores various tax deferral and elimination methods, discusses the pros and cons, and gives examples of how they work in everyday practice.

Geared toward real estate investors, apartment building owners, developers, realtors, financial planners, and accountants, Tax Secrets of Millionaire Real Estate Investors explains how readers can:

                    * Build wealth tax-free.

                    * Shelter real estate income from taxes.

                    * Buy and sell real estate without being taxed.

                    * Minimize taxes on final divestment.

                    * Create tax-advantaged streams of income at retirement.

Tax Secrets of Millionaire Real Estate Investors describes commonplace tax-deferral devices like installment sales and 1031 exchanges, as well as the lesser-known private annuity trusts and charitable remainder tax-advantaged trusts. Williamson also includes case histories, sample forms, relevant IRS codes, and sample IRS forms and publications.

5 out of 5 stars Los Angeles Times review was on the money!.......2005-08-03

After reading a review of this book in the Los Angeles Times I went and bought this book for myself. I skimmed over the various chapters and have read the ones that were most important to my situation. I certainly agree with the very favorable review it received in many ways. But, most importantly, you don't have to be a millionaire investor to get a wealth of information that this book provides. Easy read, too!

                    5 out of 5 stars Perfect!!.......2005-01-23

Finally, a book that makes the IRS easier to understand. Through his real life examples and charts, it's made easy for me. After reading this book, my family & friends now think I'm an expert. I'm telling my accountant what I need to do! Who would of thought? I highly reccommend this book.

                    Book Description

This funny and tender book combines three of Alice Steinbach’s greatest passions: learning, traveling, and writing. After chronicling her European journey of self-discovery in Without Reservations, this Pulitzer Prize—winning columnist for the Baltimore Sun quit her job and left home again. This time she roamed the world, taking lessons and courses in such things as French cooking in Paris, Border collie training in Scotland, traditional Japanese arts in Kyoto, and architecture and art in Havana. With warmth and wit, Steinbach guides us through the pleasures and perils of discovering how to be a student again. She also learns the true value of this second chance at educating herself: the opportunity to connect with and learn from the people she meets along the way.

4 out of 5 stars inspires and enhances my dreams.......2007-07-06

I enjoy reading travel writing. I am an arm chair world traveler, knowing one day, I too will be fortunate enough to write my own travel memoirs.
I enjoyed this authors approach to travel, since I too, love to learn new things, why not incorporate the two, travel and learning together. I was encouraged by how open and responsive people were to her visits and to her questions. I could only hope that people would be so receptive to me while traveling-of course she opened herself up to strangers and I would guess it was her "good-naturedness" and postive and humble demeanor that drew people to her as well.
I could have done without the sentimental flashbacks and even more sentimental love letters to her friend, but that is just me. Overall, I enjoyed reading about Ms Steinbachs travels and experiences.

2 out of 5 stars Stick to "Without Reservations".......2007-05-31

I enjoyed reading Alice Steinbach's "Without Reservations" immensely that I looked forward to reading this book with the same intensity, but I became disappointed with it towards the middle of the book and I even skipped some of the later chapters because it was making me sleep. I am reading her first book though, "The Miss Dennis School of Writing and Other Lessons from a Woman's Life", which is a collection of her articles in the Baltimore Sun.

1 out of 5 stars stick with Without Reservations.......2007-02-18

I too really enjoyed Without Reservations, however, this book is Borrrinnng. I suppose her list of things to do/learn is vastly different than mine. She definitely has a Jones for the Ritz [in both books], which does nothing for me. I love Jane Austen, but have no interest in the all-things-Jane vigil. Gardens in Provence? I did enjoy the Havana story, but still am unsure how she went from the states to Cuba...I thought this wasn't legal. Upon reading other reviews right now, I've decided to skip her holocaust non-fiction writing [nothing like an American going to "holocaust country" and writing a story. sheesh.], and the apparently ever so REALLY boring sheep herding education.

5 out of 5 stars TRAVEL AND YOU WILL LEARN........2006-11-05

As a fan of her first book "Without Reservations" I enjoyed this book very much. Alice Steinbach travels to different parts of the world to expand her knowledge and her skills. The reader tags along to her diversified destinations from taking lessons at the Ritz cooking school in Paris to immersing herself in the world of Jane Austen in England. Ms. Steinbech adds new meaning to learning from one's travels. I highly recommend both of her books and look forward to many more.

                    5 out of 5 stars Delicious, full-bodied novel..........2006-03-24

This book was fantastic! I probably loved this book out of sheer envy for what Ms. Steinbach did - pick up, and travel around the world to take classes and participate in life! I would love to do exactly the same. Since I'm not at the place where I could do just that (unfortunately!), reading this book was the next best thing...

I enjoyed how she separated each travel into its own chapter. My favorite chapter was her trip to Florence...her descriptions of the old church and of Borgo Pinti were breathtaking. I thought the street itself would materialize out of the pages, she described every detail in such rich, layered fashion. Though it is a work of non-fiction, it is exciting, humorous, at times hysterical - not at all dry or purely didactic.

I think Ms. Steinbach did an excellent job of relaying the flavor of each location and the feelings each experience stirred within her. I especially liked the use of weaving Naohiro's character in and out of the chapters. As her scenery and ingredients changed, his place in her mind remained stable. It was a great device for this type of book. It is also a metaphor for all of our lives - we can be independent and adventure out on our own, taking responsibility for advancing our personal education, yet a relationship with someone special is lasting and can continue to exist and flourish despite our new landscapes.

                        Book Description

Ben Dunkelman grew up in a wealthy Jewish family in Toronto. Kicked out of several schools for being a hell-raiser, he was sent off to Europe and the Middle East in the 1930s, gaining hard experience that would serve him well in the years to come.

On his return he worked for the family business, but when World War Two came he lost no time in enlisting. Dunkelman describes the war from the ordinary soldier's viewpoint, without embellishment or glorification. Yet he was a hero to his men--and to his country. After the war Dunkelman returned to Canada, but in 1948 he went to war again--this time to fight for the young nation of Israel in the struggle to establish a Jewish state.

Dual Allegiance is the exciting, fast-paced story a man and the passions he was willing to fight for--and if necessary, die for.

In 1957, a few experimental European groups came together to form the Situationist International. The name came from their aim of liberating everyday life through the creation of open-ended, participatory "situations" (as opposed to fixed works of art). Over the next decade the situationists developed a critique of the global "spectacle-commodity system," and their new methods of agitation helped trigger the May 1968 revolt in France. Although the SI was dissolved in 1972, situationist theories and tactics have continued to inspire radical currents in dozens of countries all over the world. This is the most comprehensive collection of situationist writings in English, greatly revised and expanded, with over 100 pages of new material.

While the anthology does contain such important works as the theory of the derive and on the poverty of student life, all these and more works are available for free online. I would personally suggest not picking this up and going with the online texts unless you need something to hold in your hands (as in my case). Good, but unnecessary today with the incredible resources available online.

If you're interested in the Situationist International & you don't speak/read French, you need this book! It's the absolute STANDARD-SETTING WORK for English translations of Situationist (and some Letterist International) texts. Absolutely essential.
