Museums in Crisis.......2006-05-02
In the present volume, an attempt is made to deal with the relationship between art and society today in one of its most important aspects - the museum. Critical examinations of the museum's past, present, and future range over such problems as a mass audience and democratic objectives; the functions of the director, curator and trustees; the museums relationship to the university and education, and its role in defining art. The contributors are well known British and American art critics and historians - people involved professionally with the very institutionsa they are criticixing: John E. Bowlt, Edward F. Fry, Grace Glueck, Ernest van den Haag, Hugh Kenner, Max Kozloff, Thomas W. Leavitt, Linda Nochlin, John R. Spencer, and Bryan Robertson.

I have used this book many times........1998-07-11
It has been an exemplary sample of my belief system as a designer. I was a student when I learned of Halprin's work, and have, always had a sense of affinity for the philosophic approach he has been able to publish. I am thankful that individuals, like Mr. & Mrs. Halprin have been able to promote a conscientious process for decision-making. I think I lent my book to someone and now I am unable to find it in my library. Either I must stop lending books, or

excellent reference on women's historical costuming.......2006-10-31
Excellent reference for illustrators and animators. However, "Costume in Detail" only covers women's costuming, which is unfortunate considering the attention the author paid to the material.
Costume in Detail: 1730-1930.......2006-08-11
I bought this as a gift but I want a copy for myself. Can I say better?
costume survey.......2006-07-05
the best of its kind. library copies constantly used by local stage costumers. a brilliant piece of work!
Very detailed.......2002-11-23
I would have loved to had seen the pieces of the garment drawn in their pattern shapes, but otherwise an excellent book with much detail written about each garment. Only other problem was that sometimes the writer's handwriting about the details on the drawings were a bit hard to decifer.
The BEST.......2002-09-19
Until this book dissapeared from my local library I must have borrowed it for over half its shelf life there, in all of 15 years this book has been THE reference for me, no mean feat to hold my attention since I was 11.
I love it because of the minute detail of the fabric patterns which although hard to find today similar items can be found for those wanting to recreate the dresses.
The value for money is unreproachable, you just have to buy this book. Thank the publishers for reprinting in the U.S and here in U.K !
Customer Reviews:
A must - have for the serious costumer........1996-12-24
This is a book that I have used pieces of for several years
via a costumers mag called, "Kosumekunde." The drawings
show details splendidly, just as the title suggests, and
covers many views or angles for better understanding of
construction and pattern techniques. There is a small
amount of text with each drawing, however, this is only a
recap of the pictures and consequently, not of much use
to me. If you are new to costume, I suggest you use this
book along with a good basic pattern guide to make better
use of the drawings. I have made costumes as a hobby
and business for 15 years and still find myself lingering
over Ms. Bradfields lovely illustrations. Inspiration for
new projects and new life for old ones keeps me coming back
for more. Costume in Detail is one of my most valued books!

Book Description
What accounts for the massive global popularity of action films and adventure literature? How do men and women respond to iconic screen stars such as Jackie Chan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steve McQueen, and Charlton Heston? Action genres have been Hollywood's most profitable global exports for most of its history, their male heroes the subject of much fascination and derision. Bestselling literary thrillers, from The Hunt for Red October to Into Thin Air, have also contributed markedly to popular understandings of male activity. Action Figures takes stock of action narratives' many appeals and recognizes how contemporary crises of gender identity manifest themselves in popular commercial texts

Space: 1889 Must Have.......2005-06-22
After the core rulebook, this volume contains the two key volumes of the now OOP series. Cloud Captains is the dramatic heart of Space: 1889 and Conklin's Atlas is second only to the core rules as the definitive sourcebook of the S: 1889 universe. If you are intending to play the game, buy this book.
Must have for Space: 1889.......2002-01-03
If you are planning to play Space: 1889, this is THE supplemental book to get. It gives much greater detail to Mercury & Venus than the rulebook, and adds to the information on Mars. The information on Victorian Earth is lacking, though the travel times and world maps of 1889 Earth are helpful.
Cloud Captains provides interesting detail on Karkarham, "the Casablanca of Mars" - where just about anything goes. It is a great place to set a campaign for ribald adventurers.

Successful Small-Scale Farming: An Organic Approach.......2007-07-15
This book is chock full of great advice! Add it to your library and refer to it often.
So, you think you wanna be a farmer?.......2007-01-06
Written in the late '70s, this book will scare you off the idealistic vision of farming and tune you into some of the economic and other realities. It's dry. It's nuts-and-bolts. It's not groovy. It's about dirt and tractors and seed.
The book attempts to give you a complete how-to, but instead you walk away realizing there is a lot to learn.
A dreamers book with few details.......2002-08-20
The book started off getting me real excited about sustainable farming. I was eager to turn the page and learn more, but as i turned the page, nothing materialized. I learned a lot about soil health and management, but when it got around to details about specific vegetables, growing seasons, and pest prevention, the book was lacking.
No b.s, uh....manure!.......2000-07-16
This book is for people who either live and farm in the country already, or have some realastic experience about what it is to work for a living. Anyone who has ever tried to bring in a crop, will appreciate the down-to-earth basic information provided. If you are looking for information about how to make a pretty garden, look elsewhere. this is a not to be missed reference, right up there with your county extension agent's telephone number.
A Classic!.......1999-02-09
Anyone owning or planning to own a small farm will find this handbook an invaluable guide to both the real potential and the harsh realities in making a full or part-time living on the land - buying land, growing and marketing your crops. Concise how-to. 134 pages.
Book Description
A stunning literary survival story, hailed by the Los Angeles Times as a "moving, beautifully written account, by turns raw and tender."
Across Sudan, between 1987 and 1989, tens of thousands of young boys took flight from the massacres of Sudan's civil war. They became known as the Lost Boys. With little more than the clothes on their backs, sometimes not even that, they streamed out over Sudan in search of refuge. Their journey led them first to Ethiopia and then, driven back into Sudan, toward Kenya. They walked nearly one thousand miles, sustained only by the sheer will to live.
They Poured Fire on Us from the Sky is three boys' account of that unimaginable journey. With the candor and the purity of their child's-eye-vision, Alephonsion, Benjamin, and Benson recall by turns how they endured hunger and strength-sapping illnesses. How they dodged the life-threatening predators-lions, snakes, crocodiles and soldiers-that dogged their footsteps. How they grappled with a war that threatened continually to overwhelm them. Their story is a lyrical, captivating portrait of a childhood lost to war, and of the perseverance of the human spirit.

A life-changing experience.......2007-10-04
I never thought that a book could move me in the way that this has. It is gripping, inspirational, horrifing, beautiful tear-jerker that will keep your jaw dropped. You will be forever changed by this true account of a tragedy that sadly many Americans do not know about. Amazing book. Make sure to have a box of tissues by your side!
A must read.......2007-09-26
I couldn't put the book down and at the end I cried. It was hard to believe that boys so young had been through so much. If your interested in whats going on in Sudan than I think its a must read.
True, Real, Humbling.......2007-09-26
This book is so powerful, these boys journey is so humbling, there is no way that you could read this book and not look at your life in a different way. The crazy thing about it is that it is ALL TRUE, this is thier account of their lives, this book has encouraged me more to want to fight for social injustices.
Must Read.......2007-08-11
I have a BA in English and taught high school literature courses for seven years before becoming the administrator of an alternative school. I consider myself well read. Therefore, when I say this was the most moving book I have ever read, I do not say so lightly. I had the honor of meeting one of the authors, Benjamin Ajak, at a recent conference. While his English is not articulate, his message is gut wrenchingly moving. This book is not for the faint of heart. It is not a summer beach romance. It is the story of the survival of the human spirit at its most base level. It is both appalling and inspiring. It is a must read. If you are not a humanitarian before you read it, you will be after you read it.
Must Read.......2007-06-27
Amazing!
This sad true account of the lives of the people of Southern Sudan is a must read.

To Arms! To Arms!.......2001-09-08
This is the third Machiavelli book that any student of politics MUST read. While 'The Prince' tells a ruler how he should govern and 'The Discourses' explains why unjust and ineffective leaders should be... disposed of, The Art of War gives reasons for the third and ultimate check on political power. Recording a conversation between his friends (with obvious artistic license taken), Machiavelli writes this to support his newly-drafted militia ordinance, requiring all able-bodied men in Florence to arm themselves and be prepared to go to war whenever their country's interests are threatened. He bases this principle on the Swiss model (which is still in place today!) as well as those of Rome and Sparta. The message to his Prince and countrymen is simple: that republics last longer when their citizens are armed and dangerous, and that they are more secure if a prince can call upon a vast army at a moment's notice-- and be able to disband it as soon as the war is over.
As to the actual principles of warfare he provides, they are, naturally, antiquated, and probably weren't very effective since Florence's greatest military achievement seems to have been the conquest of Pisa. The message he sets out to provide, however, is the building of a more secure state by promoting the profession of arms, which he proves has worked every time it has been tried.
Good prequel for The Prince, but little military value.......2001-09-05
My review of this book will be based on first it's military value and then it's value as political theory book.
I picked this book up purely based upon the title and some of it's references to Roman military history. I gave it three stars because it's primarily a rewriting of Vegetius' "Epitoma Rei Militaris" which is a military manual for what the Roman army should attempt to attain, rather that what it was in practice. Machiavelli takes these theories and implements them in the 15th century European armies with little regard to practicality of such changes in the military and political spheres of medieval Europe. He is a statesman with minimal military expereince attempting redo the face of medieval warfare.
However, from standpoint of political theory it blew me away. I had read Machiavelli's Prince in college but when I read his Art of War everything in the Prince made sense. Machiavelli's take on war is identical to his take on politics. While most classical political views describe their theories as rules for a group of civilized individual within society to worked with each other as friends/collegues for betterment of people within and against their foes outside, Machiavelli destroys this boderline that determines friend and foe. For grasping ultimate power, all individual competors from inside or outside society are treated as a foe. Therefore, all the rules of warfare including those of deceit and treachery are allowed. In this book one sees that the root of Machiavellian political thoery is based on classical theories of warfare advocated by ancient military theorists such as Sun Tzu, Ceasar and Alexander. Machiavelli has replaced the terms offensive and defensive actions in warfare with conspiracy and counter conspiracy in politics. The methods for success in latter two are basically the same with former two.
political.......2000-09-06
The Art of war with more than a merely artistic or historical interest is the incontrovertible truth that it deals with the great principles which still guide nations and rulers in their relationship with each other and their neighbours.
Not for those interested in War.......2000-06-26
If you are fascinated by Machiavelli and his writings, then this is a must for your bookshelf. If you are looking for a book on the art of war during the Renaissance, then keep looking. In this book, Machiavelli presents his ideal plan for how a city-state should organize its military and fight its wars. He draws almost all of his organizational and war conduct ideas from Flavius Vegetius Renatus' De Res Militarii. He also spends a great deal of effort smearing the practice of hiring mercenary captains (most of which is bad history on his part, so read Michael Mallett on the subject). This book falls short in its discussion of war, but still has many insights into the mind and politics of Machiavelli.
Is this really all that?.......2000-06-08
Everyone tells me this is a great book. Really? I don't get it.

Book Description
Richard Lowry explores the real importance of the Clinton years--the Clinton administration appeasing and ignoring the ever-growing threats to American security from hostile regimes and parties, rogue states, and global terrorist networks. Lowry offers the first sweeping-and stunning assessment of what the Clinton era really meant and means for America.
Customer Reviews:
Know the Truth..........2007-03-25
Legacy: Paying the Price for the Clinton Years by Rich Lowry provides the reader with an intense and thorough analysis of the Clinton Era. Legacy is rich with actual quotations from Clinton, his wife and, most importantly, the people from his inner political circle, his aides and advisors. The book immerses deep into Clinton's insidious past and presents a wealth of forgotten truths to the reader, not as conservative propaganda, but, as cold hard facts. Lowry's powerful use of syntax and diction paints a very deep and honest portrait of Clinton. From Clinton's insecurities and capricious behavior to his inability to take action and responsibility, Rich Lowry does NOT hold back from exposing Clinton for what he truly is...a self-absorbed coward. Overall, Lowry does a splendid job of compressing eight years of mistakes, scandals and lies into one book. I applaud him. Being in the military, I experienced much of the aftermath from Clinton's budget cuts and other bogus endeavors and I can attest that we, as Americans, have paid a heavy and painful price for his cowardice and dishonesty. I encourage all Americans to open their eyes, read this book and acknowledge the fact for now is time to know the truth about Clinton.
Makes you wonder how he got away with it.......2007-01-14
it kind of tells it like it was. He as not the smiling guy he comes off as. Get it at the library for free. I gave it three stars because it does bring out some of the seedy things he did. I really never finished it.
Devastated by passage of time.......2006-11-04
Wow, what a difference five years makes.
For all the flaws Lowry finds in Clinton (and there are several which bear noting), even the most serious pale to what we now find in the Executive Branch. If only we had a president who cared about his legacy enough to correct mistakes in judgement and reverse course when desperately needed. If only we had a president today who cared about polls, and the will of the people. If only we had a leader who acted cautiously, intellectually, and with the aid of evidence rather than "gut feelings".
I remember well the days when I thought Clinton would be the worst president our country would ever see. How quaint those days seem.
Shipment early, packing condition.......2006-07-29
Book arrived on earliest date listed. Packing was simply a tight bubble wrap envelope that (I am sure) resulted in bent corners of book. Otherwise, book in great condition.
Why the Change? .......2006-06-18
This review is somewhat belated. I read the book shortly after its original release. The copy I have has a scarlet letter "A" in the title, which I thought represented perfectly the legacy of this brilliant, but terribly flawed man. It's too bad the title was retooled.
