Recent discussions of aesthetics, whether in the hermeneutic or the analytic tradition, understand the place of art and aesthetic experience according to a model of "autonomy"--as just one among the many modes of experience that make up the realm of reason, situated beside the other "spheres of value." In contrast, Theodor Adorno and Jacques Derrida view art and aesthetic experience as a medium for the dissolution of nonaesthetic reason, an experientially enacted critique of reason. Art is not only autonomous, following its own law, different from nonaesthetic reason, but sovereign: it subverts the rule of reason.
In this book Christoph Menke attempts to explain art's sovereign power to subvert reason without falling into an error common to Adorno's negative dialectics and Derrida's deconstruction. The error, which already appeared in romanticism, is to conceive of the sovereignty of art as reflecting the superiority of its knowledge. For art entails no knowledge and its negativity toward reason cannot be articulated as an insight into the nature of reason: art is sovereign not despite, but because of, its autonomy. Menke brings to his arguments a firm grounding in both philosophy and literary studies, as well as familiarity with German, French, and American sources.

excellent primary source for opera directors.......2000-12-01
In brief, this is an excellent source of ideas from an important opera director. Felsenstein believed song should be a natural progression from speech. In other words, emotions get so high you HAVE to sing! Felsenstein's prose ranges from the general to the specific (with an interesting article on Pamina). A must-read for directors and highly recommended for opera die hards.

Worst Marketing Book Ever Read.......2006-05-31
This is by far the worst marketing book, i have ever read. The wording is quite complex and not easy to understand. lacks clarity, layout and good examples. The only reason i gave it a 2 not a 1 cause of nice colourful ads Solomon has choosen.

Someone once said that more books have been written about Abraham Lincoln than any other person in history save Jesus and Shakespeare. Indeed, it is impossible to understand the Civil War without getting to know the complex figure of the 16th president. More than any other biographer, Stephen B. This book generated controversy among Lincoln scholars. The general reading public, however, will probably enjoy both the book's prose and its story. Regardless of whether there is much, or anything, new in the volume, its account of Lincoln is told with flair. Points that disturbed some Lincoln scholars will probably not be noticed by general readers. I read the book before I knew about the dispute, and found the volume enchanting.
Best Lincoln Biography.......2007-08-24
Consider the great biographies of Lincoln: Nicolay and Hay,[10 volumes] his secretaries, Carl Sandburg's Abraham Licoln [6 volumes], Benjamin's single volume and all those that preceed and follow this, you must conclude this is the best single volume biography of Abraham Lincoln, indeeed the best general biography of the President and the man. The closest rival is Carwardine's Lincoln which deals in depth in one aspect of his life. WITH MALICE TOWARD NONE IS THE BEST INTRODUCTION TO THAT COMPLEX MAN AND HIS TIME AND ACHEIVEMENTS THAT WE HAVE TO DATE.
One of the Best Biographies I have read.......2007-02-06
Professor Oates in my opinion did an outstanding job in the biography he did on Lincoln. While it is not as verbose as Donald's, it was well written and to be honest I could not set the book down. For anyone who does not have the time to read a larger volumn on Lincoln I suggest Oates. If you have time then I suggest you read both and also read "Team of Rivals. They are all outstanding volumns. This biography though is articulate, a good length and at times you can see the great passions in Lincoln the boy from Kentucky, the youth in Illnois and the 16 President of the United States. I give it a 5 stars a must read for any history student and I think a must for every American.
A great biography of Abraham Lincoln.......2007-01-23
In this work, Oates succeeds in illuminating the political and personal life of Abraham Lincoln. For readers interested in the psychological and social nature of the man, this may not be the best selection. However, Oates does an excellent job portraying how Lincoln worked his fingers to the bone while developing his standing as a lawyer and politician. His description of Lincoln as a rough and tumble political longshot made 16th President of the United States in the election of 1861 is vivid and memorable. Much information is also included on how Lincoln and his administration struggled with the issue that would become his legacy: slavery in America. That said, Oates neglects to discuss in any great detail the economic influence of the nation's cotton industry on the political and social conditions of the era.
Debunks the saint and presents a human .......2007-01-13
Lincoln, widely considered our best president, has been sainted in many quarters. Indeed he saved the union, freed the slaves, and preserved the constitution, but he was human too. Stephen Oates presents him warts and all - a man struggling with depression, a weak manager entrusting too much to his people, and a leader fighting a congress rallied against him for both being too progressive and too reactionary. It was a tough time, and many times the wonder is how Lincoln managed to bend without breaking.
The book is outstanding as a scholarly work, and as popular history. Enjoy!

Well-written and informative.......2006-05-04
With Malice Toward None is a well-written and informative look at Lincoln's life. I am very selective about the biographies that I spend my time reading because I consider the style of many to be suffocatingly boring. I looked over several on Lincoln, and selected this one. I was pleased with it through the end. The author does not waste space on finding the "flawed" man underneath the legend, which is popular in so many recent biographies. He explains Lincoln's life in a matter-of-fact and readable fashion. One of my favorite parts in the book is the explanation of how the Civil War proceeded and the absolutely essential role Lincoln played. It will give you an insightful look at the politics and history of the time, not to mention an appreciation for how much Lincoln endured before his triumph.

I am being forced to read this book in AP History. It is one of the worst bigs I have ever read n my life. It is boring and the author is far too verbose for his own good. He often uses 50 words when 2 will do. Do not buys this book. It is horrible beyond belief the only book I can think that is wworse then this is Founding Brothers. I wish I could ahve given it zero stars.

Well I needed to read this book for a history book report. The book was interesting but also boring for a 14 year old to read. All of the political stuff but it was still a great book about Lincoln. I learned a lot about him and and how much he must have been stressing while he was President. If you like to read then u might as well read this book.

My father was a member of the 388th [Bombardment] Group and I have been searching for any information I can find about him and his crew and what they did and felt. I know and have met several of the people featured in the book which makes it even more exciting to me. My father was on many of the missions described in the book, so I can imagine his feelings. It is very personal to me. It is also the kind of book you can pick up and put down and skip around. I especially liked the daily newsletter and bulletins since I had never seen that sort of information.
A Timely Tribute.......2002-02-07
This book and its companion piece second volume are outstanding tributes to the heros of World War Two, and they couldn't come at a better time. The heros are dying and it's important that we remember who they were and what they did. As a vet myself, I can tell you that the 388th Anthology is one of the most complete histories of a bomb group I've ever seen, and the details of these stories are amazing. Not only are the stories exciting and moving, but the Anthology is an impressive historical work and I recommend it highly.
Great 8th Air Force Book!.......2001-12-29
A friend gave me this book, and I read it in one weekend. It's unlike any WWII history I've ever seen. There are diaries, memoirs, public relations stories, reports from the 388th Bomb Group's headquarters - it really gives you the big picture of what life must have been for these airmen and their ground support. Some stories made me laugh; others made me cry. The epilogue really brought out the emotions. Read it cover to cover, or skip randomly through the individual stories. Either way you choose, I highly recommend it!
One of the Best WWII Books I've Ever Read!.......2001-12-29
After a friend gave me a copy of 388th Anthology, Volume 1, I just knew I had to get this second volume as well. These are no ordinary histories of the air war in Europe; they are actually compilations of memoirs, diaries, articles from Stars & Stripes and other newspapers, and reports from the 388th Bomb Group's base at Knettishall, England between 1943 and 1945. For anyone who has wanted to understand the lives of the men who served in aerial combat, these books are "must" reading.

Budget Inversion.......2007-09-04
Amazing what Mitt Romney can do with numbers. If in doubt, do without. He pulled the 2002 winter games off on a no frills budget and turned a scandal into a triumph.
It seems he gets so much grief just because he is a Mormon, but I'm amazed at what he can do and mostly impressed by his get up and go, can do attitude. His wife says he loves emergencies and crisis situations of any kind. He turns the financing of the games from a huge millions of dollars deficit into a millions of dollars profit. Throughout the whole crisis leading up to the games, he made it the mission of the whole team to be honest and forthright with each other and the public. It's blatantly apparent that he always makes an honest million and demands integrity of his team whoever they be. This book was truly inspirational in many ways. If you don't want to read the book or even hate Mitt Romney, at least read the "Prologue" and the first chapter. I love the story of the American flag from the World Trade Center bombing being brought into the Olympic stadium during opening ceremonies. It's really awesome!
There have been other budget inversions in our nation's history. The most remarkable one happened on the eve of this country's founding and was repaired by Alexander Hamilton, our nation's first Treasury Secretary. That tale is best told by Forrest McDonald in his biography of Hamilton.
These are great stories and must reads for government financiers!

With a title like "turnaround" I was expecting Mitt to explain why he has reversed all of his positions on abortion, sexuality etc just in time for the Republican nomination.
Unfortunately not.
This book is about a simpler time when Mitt did not have to reverse or hide all of his principles in order to seek higher office. It tells the story of his rescue of the Olympic Games. It is actually quite good (although Mitt takes a LOT of the credit for things that others did). Unfortunately, it also reflects on the "old" Mitt rather than the Mitt 2.0 who is running for the nomination today...

The Olymic Games were a mess. A succesful turnaround required, understanding of the crisis and the ability to lead the Olymics through one its toughest challenges of the second half of the 20th Century. Read about how it was done.
