The Andy Warhol Diaries
ASIN: 0847819671
Release Date: 1996-09-15 |
Book Description
The paradox of Andy Warhol, who is at once one of the most visible and the most elusive figures of our time, is heightened by this collection of twenty interviews with the artist's closest friends and colleagues. Through their words a more complete picture emerges of the man behind the mirror. Their recollections form an ever entertaining, often fascinating oral history of his career. Complementing the text are more than fifty works from private collections and the Warhol archives, most of which have never been published before.
Interviews in the original Interview mode--direct and unedited--evoke the serendipity and laissez-faire creativity of the Factory, where Warhol reigned without ruling. Included are the stories of Vito Giallo, the studio assistant turned antiques dealer whose shop was a regular stop on Warhol's shopping itinerary; of Baby Jane Holzer, one of the biggest superstars of Warhol's underground films; of Bob Colacello and Marc Balet, former editor and art director at Interview; and of Billy Name, who literally lived at the silver-coated Factory during the turbulent sixties.
Photographs by Billy Name, Paige Powell, and other friends create a clearer, more intimate picture of the artist and all that swirled around him.

4 Stars for every one else, 5 for hardcore Warholians.......2003-06-14
This book is a genuine pleasure to read, and a trove of insights into an Andy Warhol that really hasn't been masticated to death in every other book about Warhol. It was compiled by two relatively late-comers to the Warhol scene (Ming Vase, and one of the Artistic Directors of 'Interview'), but it encompasses aspects of Andy from his first days in New York right up to the end. The construction of the book is such that each chapter is based around the discussion of experiences and impressions of Andy and the Andy 'scene' by various individuals who worked with, socialized with, or dealt with Andy. Some of these narrators are people so peripheral to Andy's orbit that only the hardcore Warholphiliac will recognize their names. Others are people whose names come up in even the most casual examination of Andy Warhol's life and work, and a couple are people whom no one has heard of. Because the authors know many of the subjects of the book the discussions can take on the aspect of intimate conversation. This is nice, especially to one who has vicariously lived the events spoken of through deep immersion in the literature and media surrounding Andy Warhol and the Pop Art Explosion he detonated. This is one of the best books about Andy that was not written by him, and if you are right into his art and life then it is a must read. If there is any theme that the authors of the book wish to stress it is that Andy was a spiritual person. I'm unsure if their efforts convinced me, but I must say that they revealed facets of the Andy Warhol experience that heretofore I was not aware of.
Touched by an Andy.......2002-09-09
The editorial review is misleading. This book is not a catalogue of "unseen Warhol work". Many of the examples used are well known pieces. The unseen Warhol implied by the title, comes from the different sides of his personality that are revealed by the numerous people interviewed. Most everyone interviewed manages to reveal something about themselves as well as about Andy. Tama Janowitz tells the inside story of Andy's Blind Date Club and reveals the loneliness of being single. Maura Moynihan, the rebel punk girl, from Democratic royality, finds a father figure in Andy. Ronnie Cutrone, Andy's painting assistant for many years, explains what it was like to be there and participate in the creation of so many of Andy's masterpieces. Most everyone speaks with gratitude and appreciation on how much their lives have been enriched by their relationship with Warhol. But then there's Bob Colacello, obsessing about the "wonders" of Nancy Reagen and complaining how the original idea for the musical Evita was stolen from him by Robert Stigwood. In the end, the praise and gratitude win and the bitterness is kept to a minimum in this well designed and enlightening book.
get smart here.......2001-08-06
There are lots of people who are very stupid about andy warhol. I am in love with him. I am so excited to find this book because along with the philosophy of andy warhol it seems to be getting at his personality. And this book is a bit easier to understand than the philosophy because it is interviews with people who tell stories about what they thought was important about their friend. So, get it and get andy warhol a little bit better.

This very lavish book is an wonderful reference for any student of Indian costume and textiles. Many wonderful color photographs show the interaction of textiles and costume in India. The text has a great deal of information about the historical development of sewn clothing across India. A very useful book!

Six young men live in Mac Hall, a high-occupancy dormitory on an unnamed college campus. Packed like sardines in a can, they have little comfort or privacy, let alone dignity. Still, they deal as best they can with class, life, and the occasional reality warp... when they manage to get off the couch.

Nothing Not To Like.......2006-01-22
If you've EVER been to college, even for a short time like me ;) then these comics are for you. Being a comp. sci. major (same as the main characters) these especally appealed to me. Visit the website and read them for yourself, and then buy this book so you can read a hard copy again and again.
Collage was never like this..........2005-09-05
Six young men live in a high-occupancy dorm. They love video games, goofing off and parties. Not much of a plot, just weird, twisted fun as they deal with school, girls and low grades.
Good web comic made into an awesome book........2005-07-21
I've been a fan of Mac Hall from near it's beginning online. It was great, and I had a lot to relate with since I was in college at the time. I've finally gotten the book and it's great. Not only do you get the comic in a form that allows you to get away from the computer :) the commentary from the artist and the writer make for some even funner insite.
I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it for fans of the comic, and fans of web comics in general.
A Front to Back Thriller.......2005-07-11
I have to say, this is the first comic collection that I have ever read beginning to end in less than twenty-four hours and it is my absolute favorite among the now vast amount of webcomics out there. Matt and Ian are a writer and artist duo unlike any pair I've ever seen collaborate together before; and I am so happy to see how far MacHall has evolved under their hobby-style devotion to it.
My boyfriend is obsessed with old Calvin & Hobbes comics, and I'm happy to tell him that MacHall's my "Calvin & Hobbes".
Beautiful Book; Interesting Look at (College) Life.......2004-12-01
Production values for this book are wonderful; the colors are true; the art is engaging and interesting; a number of the strips are laugh-out-loud funny even for someone who hasn't attended college for -- well, let's just leave it at Some While. For these things alone, this book is worth buying and reading.
But.
What I found even more compelling than the comic are the notes from Matt and Ian along the side of every page. The notes not only detail the beginning of the collaboration and the development of the comic, but offer insight into college life, and paint vivid pictures of the authors, and the creative process. *Well* done.

Product Description
This volume brings together a group of international scholars to analyze the globalized networks of Indian cinema. It provides a critique of a common scholarly tendency in the field of popular cinema of defining Indian films in terms of their modernity and desire for nationhood. Bollyworld argues that Indian cinema cannot be understood in terms of this national paradigm, and must be more properly described as a field of visual and cultural production that interlinks sites as diverse as the cosmopolitan city of Bombay, the provincial region of Maharashtra, and countries such as Nigeria, Germany, South Africa and the United Kingdom. The twelve essays track the intra-national and trans-national movements of Bollywood cinema. Divided into three sections, the first discusses the technology and aesthetics of India's commercial cinema as it developed in the period that spans the silents from 1913 to the advent of the talkies in 1931. The second section studies these films as 'local', 'intertextual' manifestations of globalization and highlights the changes in post-liberalization cinema. Against the backdrop of economic liberalization, the institutionalization of multiculturalism and a strong voice of migrant Indian populations, the third section focuses on the overseas reception of Indian films.

Book Description
The late nineteenth century witnessed the birth and popularization of a number of highly
emotional musical styles that played on the eagerness of modern Europeans and Americans to toy with the limits of sanity and to taste the ecstasies of living on the edge. This absorbing book explores these popular, passionate musical styles -- which include flamenco, tango and rebetika -- and points out that they arose as well-intentioned intellectuals co-opted the emotional experiences most closely associated with women. In drawing those experiences out of female practice, they defined, objectified, and turned them into strategies of domination, the deepest impact of which was felt, ironically, by modern women.
In bridging anthropology, sociology, cultural, media, body and gender studies, this book broadens the base of theory which has ignored the transnational world of Latin and Mediterranean popular culture and makes a powerful statement about the intersection of nationalism, sexuality, identity and authenticity.
Customer Reviews:
Very funny.......2005-08-18
I think the previous reviewer is confused. I own this book and there are absolutely no cryptograms whatsoever in it. Perhaps he/she should read the title and maybe own the actual book instead of just trashing it.
At any rate, this is a really cute book, enjoyed in my house by the kids and the grown-ups. Some great new brainteasers and some fun twists on classics. Small enough to bring on airplanes or to keep in the car for short and long road trips. An all-around great buy!
Hard to do cryptos.......2005-01-21
This book is OK except that the cryptograms puzzles are printed so close together that I found it close to impossible to solve them by trying to print teeny, tiny letters above the puzzle. Anybody who does these puzzles knows what I mean. Most books with puzzles like this use capital letters that are evenly spaced so you can print in pencil above each word. What were these folks thinking? The other puzzles in the book work OK, but I feel gyped.

Every LNC should have this book!!.......2003-04-16
Marketing for the Legal Nurse Consultant is the most valuable book in my library! The Joos' walk LNCs through the world of marketing with ease. I've been lucky enough to have met these fine people in person and attended their marketing seminars. Here again, this is a "must do" for the independent legal nurse consultant. Real Answers to your LNC marketing questions.......2003-01-05
All the accolades that have been written about the Joos' book are true! This little jewel of a book is one I know I will keep referring back to in the years to come. The marketing plan and suggestions are aimed specifically at legal nurses which makes everything in this book usable and practical. "Marketing for the LNC" is an invaluable source of information not only for nurses at the early stages of setting up a new consulting business but also for those that have been at it for awhile and are wanting to expand. Betty writes as one who has an understanding of the fears that most nurses experience who are marketing themselves for the first time. This is one of those "must have" books for "newbies" and seasoned LNC's. It explains what is needed to promote yourself and explains how to effectively do so in a professional manner without spending a small fortune. After reading this book, marketing started to feel like less of a necessary evil; although it's still not my favorite way to spend my non-billable hours....I now have a much clearer idea of the message I want to send to my prospective attorney-clients and I have the tools to help me get my message across.
A "must read" for the beginning LNC..........2001-11-16
This book takes one of the most difficult parts of the LNC business and breaks it down into simple and concise steps. From the initial, terrifying (yet neccessary) phone calls, to keeping your clients long-term...this book is invaluable. It's an "easy read" and I find myself referring to it frequently as a resource because of all the helpful tips it contains. Great job Betty and John!

Customer Reviews:
If you are into racism, women issues and simple reading, this book if for you!.......2007-03-23
This is by far the best autobiography I have read so far. It was an easy read and extremely expressive. In many ways it is disturbing if you think of what the character goes through. The explicit racism, abuse, pain that Assata had to endure is decribed really well. You get to in fact life in her era, in her life when you read this book. I literally could not put it down and read it in 2 days.
It pretty much gives you and idea of how things were in the 70's, what black people went through especially women, what the black panther party was really all about, the dirty system we call law, explicit racial comments and treatment etc. If you like stuff like that, then you'll love this book.
Eyes opening..........2007-01-10
Wow...When you read this book you feel in another era , in another world but the sad part is that is not, it is our world and what hapened to this woman was real.I recommended to everyone regarding your ethnic gropu, but specially to blacks and whites in this country.
An Essential Read.......2006-06-24
The real history of the Black Power Movement will seemingly never be truthfully covered by mainstream historians.
But that doesn't mean the misconceptions and dirty lies should be repeated time and again to those interested in the ongoing struggles by persons of color. You know the drill; when it's said a topic/person is not important or much too radical then it simply is a footnote to history.
And Assata: An Autobiography is a great point to start that sojourn or to continue gaining knowledge from a person passionately involved in the revolution.
Assata Shakur's message cannot be read as simply an historical piece that has no relevance today. By doing so, the reader will miss the bigger picture that Shakur presents. The times change, but the struggle continues.
WOW.......2006-05-16
The story of Assata Shakur is deep and motivating, after reading the story of her journey I was surprised at the amount of people that had no clue of her story. This book is a great read for everyone, this book will make you think and want to learn so much more. I am so happy that she was able to tell her story.
Must read!.......2006-02-01
The book was great. I felt like using a highlighter during numerous points in the book.
"The less you think about your oppression, the more your tolerance for it grows. After a while, people just think oppression is the normal state of things. But to become free you have to acutely aware of being a slave."
this quote meant a lot to me. Its so true that many of us (including me) have become so passive in the treatment we are subjected to. We must constantly remind ourselves of the injustices because "this" is not normal.
Assata dropped numerous names I was unfamilar w/ so I made a list and I am going down it little by little and getting some background.
There is so much we all dont know. And of course if we rely on "America" to enlighten us we will be clueless for the rest of our lives. And seriously I closed the book numerous times just to think. There is so much to be done and if we could all come together to organize so much progress could be made.

Excerpts from Kirkus Review (11-1-1993)
“Any analysis of the American Black experience demands close attention to both the political and the personal, and this extraordinary memoir by Williams … offers just that, as well as making a noteworthy contribution to recent American legal History.”
“Becoming a Children’s Court probation officer … she contended with the political pressures of placing the children of Ethel and Julus Rosenberg … In the early 70’s, the author took on her most important case, defending her niece, Assata Shakur, “leader” of the Black Liberation Army.”
Customer Reviews:
Pretty Good.......2000-07-22
Margo Perkins does a pretty good job at showing her readers the activism with in each of the political autobiographies (Davis, Shakur and Brown). She gives the historical as well as the political situations that sparks these black radicals to write their stories in order that they might set the record straight and speak out against what the government and regular citizens have said about them that was not true (well, not Brown). All though Dr. Perkins' book was good in that it educated her readers, I felt as though she spent a little too much time telling us that Brown fabricated her stories and distorted her facts. I thought that chapter could have been condensed. But other than that it was a good book. You'll definitely walk away much smarter!
An important exploration of activists & biographical writing.......2000-07-04
College-level students of black history will find this an important study of women and activism, providing a portrait of three black women of the sixties (Angela Davis, Assata Shakur and Elaine Brown) who were the only activists to have published book-length autobiographies. Her study of their books provides an important exploration of activists and biographical writing.

Book Description
The outgrowth of a conference planned as a response to the need for researchers and clinicians to develop integrated plans for addressing the psychological trauma of children exposed to violence, this volume's goals are: br * to summarize research on the subject with particular emphasis on the Gulf War; br * to use this information to formulate an outline of what current knowledge suggests are reasonable approaches to public mental health intervention; and br * to develop an agenda for future research necessary for improving clinical efforts in varying international conflicts. br br A significant collection of diverse perspectives attending to a diversity of cultural and political contexts, the contributors offer many conclusions about important dimensions for analyzing the effects of violence on children. Suggesting informed approaches to public mental health efforts which can be implemented, the work presented here directs attention to the need for interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers and clinicians to better understand the effects of exposure to violence on the psychological well being of children and the optimal modes of remediation on individual, family, and community levels. br
Book Description
Raymonde Carroll presents an intriguing and thoughtful analysis of the many ways French and Americans—and indeed any members of different cultures—can misinterpret each other, even when ostensibly speaking the same language. Cultural misunderstandings, Carroll points out, can arise even where we least expect them—in our closest relationships. The revealing vignettes that Carroll relates, and her perceptive comments, bring to light some fundamental differences in French and American presuppositions about love, friendship, and raising children, as well as such everyday activities as using the telephone or asking for information.
Customer Reviews:
Poor translation and Outdated info!.......2005-10-14
Raymonde Carroll's book, a must-read when it came out, is now unfortunately way outdated. To that, add a poorly done translation... I was going to use Carroll's book in my French classes, but it was so bad that I picked Polly Platt's "Savoir-Flair" instead.
Excellent book to understand both cultures........2004-09-04
This is one of the best books I've have read period. Raymonde Carroll has an unique approach, and the background to back it up. Have you ever wondered why French people have been judged arrogant by Americans? Why the Frenchs consider the Americans two-faced and not loyal? Well, this little book holds the answers. A definite read for the American going to France, and the French going to America.
Fascinating Differences.......2003-12-26
Fascinating to learn how cultural differences can lead to misunderstanding. Especially useful if you have French friends or relatives (or hope to!). I bought this book before a long trip to France and was glad to have read it before I left home. It made the trip more fum when I could spot cultural differences that I might not have previously noticed or understood. Chapters on "Conversation" - should you look people in the eye? - and "The Couple" and "Friendship" and "Obtaining Information" were especially amusing and instructive.
Impartial & well presented views on both cultures.......2002-07-17
This book presents impartially both French & American perspectives on some major topics in daily life (conversation, parent-child relationship, information exchange, blame, ...) through some simple daily cultural misunderstanding scenes. It shade some light on how both sides look at the same issue, and accordingly how they act, and how different they are! All is presented without some fancy theories, but in an elegantly concise and knowledgable way of an ethnologist.
I read the french version directly so I cannot comment on the quality of the translation. I doubt, however, that there would be important points lost in the translation as the author writes clearly and does not play with linguistic nuances.
I am not American nor French, but I have spent part of my life in both countries. This book brings back to mind the old experiences (both positive & negative) and provide some light on the questions I have on both cultures that I have finally come to love.
Very insightful book.......2001-07-18
While somewhat tedious and redundant in areas, this book was extremely insightful into some of the cultural differences between the French and Americans. Addressing many subtlties that wouldn't immediately come to mind otherwise, this book highlights the differences in communication styles and typical conduct in the context of friendship, and it also contains a particularly detailed examination of how American vs. French couples interact with each other. If you're planning an extended stay in France, or possibly re-locating, this book could definitely spare you a great deal of confusion and embarrassment.
