Book Description
Visuality before and beyond the Renaissance examines the phenomenon of "seeing" through a study of art works from Ancient Mesopotamia, China, Africa, and European works ranging from Antiquity to the early modern period. It demonstrates that in ancient and distant societies, the act of seeing has been and is understood in diverse ways with consequences for the production of art, the practice of religion, and the individual's perception of one's world and oneself. Treating diverse cultures and using a variety of methods, this book exposes the cultural contexts in which visual perception develops.

A Yup-ik discovery..........2000-04-11
I was on the hunt for fascinating tribal stories and I came across this book put together by Marie Meade. Not only did it contain beautiful photography, but the stories that went with the traditional masks were well traslated and I was able to make more sense of the Yup-ik tribes and their ancient traditions. To see the dances in person is one thing that the book may never be able to match, but to read the book and then see the dance lets you read into the stories and become part of them. Great source!

The Ultimate Hollywood Tour Book is the joyously affirmative answer to the question "Is there an alternative to the prepackaged bus tour of Tinseltown?" William Gordon's guide delivers all the juicy scandal you've come for, but at your pace, at your discretion, and without crackly speakers blasting in your ear. You want to see former homes of Fred Astaire, Lucille Ball, or Elvis Presley, current homes of Elizabeth Taylor, Ronald Reagan, or Hugh Hefner, and the site of the Charles Manson cult murders? Gordon helps you conduct your own exploration, and supplies invaluable tidbits of information, such as how Jayne Mansfield came to receive $50,000 worth of free merchandise to decorate her Pink Palace. Gordon covers 32 neighborhoods, providing a practical tour guide as well as a fun gift for the star-struck and Hollywood-bound.
Book Description
The Ultimate Hollywood Tour Book is the first and only book to reveal where today's Hollywood lives, works, and plays. Arranged geographically, the book covers not only Hollywood, the community, but more than 30 separate areas of greater Los Angeles where entertainment history was made (see contents).
To make sightseeing as easy as possible, the book features 33 easy-to-follow maps.
To ensure accuracy, The Ultimate Hollywood Tour Book is updated once a year. The publisher is now offering to provide readers with e-mail updates if any new attractions open (or are discovered).
Customer Reviews:
Not your average tacky guide book........2007-01-12
The Ultimate Hollywood Tour Book is full of interesting facts, historical tidbits and interviews with Hollywood natives that provide readers with a realistic view of Hollywood, past and present. As any worthwhile tour guide should, this book lists hundreds of locations of interest to visit in and around the Hollywood area, extending it's reach to surrounding Los Angeles communities that have ties to the entertainment business. However, the tone of Gordon's book is informative, straightforward and friendly, not off-putting or intentionally misleading, as some guide books can be.
Not surprisingly, Gordon's book is even a fun read for those of us born and raised in Hollywood. For me it brought back memories of old haunts, and it evoked nods of approval among friends as we read through many accurate descriptions of favorite locales and pages of sound advice about what to visit and why, as well as what to avoid.
Whether you're a native of the Los Angeles area, a tourist planning just a few days' visit to Hollywood, or a local history buff searching for a fun and interesting book to read, you can't go wrong picking up a copy of William Gordon's Ultimate Hollywood Tour Book.
Wish I had this book a few years ago.......2005-11-08
About 5 years ago I took a summer job giving tours of Hollywood on an old trolley car. One of my most memorable experiences was the day one of the guides for the Beverly Hills tour got sick and I was thrown into the front seat of a tour van and sent on my way to give a tour of the star's homes. It was without a doubt one of the more embarrassing moments of my life as it wasn't my regular gig and I had to make a lot of stuff up because I had no idea whose house was whose and the guy driving the van was as clueless as I was. But if the owner's of the tour company had seen fit to give me this book beforehand I would have known where I was and all those tourists wouldn't have asked for their money back when the tour was over.
Tinseltown Mania.......2003-04-12
There must be 50 Hollywood homes books on the market. If you visit Beverly Hills, a tour-bus or map salesman will gladly take your money. But W. Gordon's remarkably accurate and truthful guide will spell out where the buses point out homes where movie stars never lived. Gordon provides detailed directions and maps to the sites you want to see. And loads of "goodies" and information. He shows you how to get to Arnold's palatial block of homes in Brentwood, and warns that driving there is a $ 500 fine and possible jail time! Wow! He also gives directions to Rudolph Valentino's original 1920's mansion(and much, much more). Forget the B.S. Here it is. When I e-mailed him for an up-date, he gladly provided it for free(see the book). Why waste time driving around freeways?
Decidedly Worth Your Time (and $).......2002-03-02
This is a not so typical tour guide which provides its reader with a lot of bang for his/her buck. It provides information which is fairly accurate regarding the living (who tend to move quite a bit). The listings provided for death scenes are very accurate (assuming you only die once). Ditto for burial sites (assuming that remains stay put in one place.....unfortunately, that isn't always true as I seem to always be finding out). What is really impressive about the many editions of this book that have been published to date is that the author constantly updates the information in the book, so that it is as accurate as it can be given the odd and fluctuating state of celebrity mindsets (and fortunes).
So if you are willing to assume that some of the information may become outdated, you will probably enjoy this book quite a bit.
Great resource for DIYers with cars.......2000-05-09
When I took an exploratory job trip for two weeks in L.A., I had a copy of the previous edition of "The Ultimate Hollywood Tour Book" and found a lot of cool stuff using this book. (I drove by O.J. Simpson's home -- which he has since sold -- as well as the former homes of Joan Crawford and Shirley Temple in Brentwood).
Since I drove down from San Francisco I stopped in Malibu and drove through some of the exclusive star neighborhoods mentioned in here (that was the first time I'd ever seen a street sign marked "Private") and I saw someone who looked suspiciously like Pierce Brosnan riding his bike and he waved! Surreal!
The maps were black and white, but still good enough to get me where I wanted to go; used in conjunction with a regular street map, you won't go wrong. As far as I know, there's no other guide book to L.A./Hollywood like this. So if you don't want to feel like a tourist and see all the regular stuff PLUS stuff no one will tell you about GET THIS BOOK!

Children might enjoy.......2005-06-22
I wasn't blown away by this book, I looked through it when it arrived, the stuff it showed to make just wasn't my cup of tea. It did have nice pictures and detailed instructions. Would be more for kids to do.
A Disappointment For Mom & Me.......2003-12-13
My mom knows how much I enjoy bargain shopping & refinishing furniture, so she bought me a copy of this book through the mail, as well as a copy for herself. Well, before I received mine, she called me to apologize for how horrible the book was. She told me that she had received hers & was promptly returning it. In advance, she welcomed me to do the same. I received mine last week, & I have to say that I share in her disappointment! Here are the real questions: Do you like vests with doilies stitched on them? Do you like pencils holders made of soup cans with lace glued on them? Ok, if your answers were "yes," you'd love this book, but if your answers were "no," then don't waste your time or money on this book that shows you how to make lamp shades from used coffee cans & VESTS with fabric panels, lace & such. It really is an embarrassing book. Now, to give credit (& the only reason this book even deserves a "1"), there are a few cute ideas woven into their disasters of projects, but you have to have an eye to pick those things out. For example, their ivy made of pop cans & craft wire was cute, but you have to see that past the end table made of coffee cans, garden hoses, & swimming pool play toys. Their denim bolster was cute, too, but there is no excuse for filling a bolster with a 2 liter bottle! One could certainly afford a $1.50 bag of stuffing at Wal-Mart! Anyway, there are, like I said, a few notable ideas, but be ready to reinvent them with your own creativity; otherwise, people will smile at your projects through clinched teeth & say, "That's nice.""
Can't get enough!.......2003-01-20
As a beginning crafter I can't get enough of this book! I have purchased all seven editions (and waiting for #8 to come out)and love to save old bottles, cans, and boxes to prepare for my "next project". This book and all the other ones have simple instructions for the person that has no idea what "household cement" is and how to do a "running stitch". Awesome book for the "crafting impaired".
Fun projects for kids.......2000-06-22
This book is a great way to introduce kids to recycling. The crafts are easy and fun to do, but they are something for children. There are only a few that are really nice enough for adults to give to another adult. As I said though for children this book is one of the best I have used. It has plenty of cute ideas for used cans.
For the advanced to beginner.......1999-12-08
I loved this book! And even bought one for my best friend who wanted to get her feet wet in crafting. I have used the pop bottle idea for many gifts and the christmas ornamate wraped in netting you get from fruit turned out so pretty! Oh and of course the stepping stones,I have seen them in the stores for 20.00 or more andto think they can be made for a fraction of the price! I could go on and on. My friend is making the stepping stones, as well as the address plate for her house, just to name a few. We will both be buying many of the books by this author and look forward to each new one.

Holy Moley! What a book.......2007-07-26
Are you kidding me!?!??? This is one great book. For a never before blogger this book helped me setup, start and gave me strategies to develop my presence and increase my business. I feel like I need to pay Susannah a referral fee - I am a Realtor after all. Fortunately in Iowa a referral fee to a nonlicnesed person is illegal. I have read this and read this, I use it for reference and it is so highlighted that I am now having to use different highlighter colors to try to keep up with the topics. Oh, I just need to buy another one and color code it. If you are even thinking about blogging get this book, block out a weekend, take lots of notes, and have at lease 5 highlighter colors!
Very helpful and insightful.......2007-03-29
Well researched, too. Good primer for getting up to speed.
Fast read | Good for readers unfamiliar with the Blogsphere.......2007-01-11
If the word "Blogsphere" is completely foreign to you, you will find this book to be a good introduction into the world of blogging. If you've created your own blogs in the past (using Blogger or some other tools), then you may benefit from something a little more advanced.
Great book for the basics.......2006-03-01
My client wanted to have a blog and I needed to learn the basics about blogs in short order. This book is a quick read and I was standing in front of their executive board in 1 week with a customized sample blog in place for their review and questions. I received a signed contract that day. Thank you for this book. On the down side, the specific blog software I used was not included in the book for review. Marketing was an important topic in my meeting and the book provided a nice, simple layout on the differences with other media and provided great ideas. The corporate blogging topic was helpful.
Much more than a Dummies book.......2005-12-12
Kudos to Susannah Gardner, the author of this book. She put together a *fabulous*, definitive work on Blog Marketing. I'm very fortunate that I didn't get turned off by the Dummies series as I almost always do (same for Idiots). I read the book from beginning to end, which is rare for me. It's full of great tips, without an ounce of fluff.

Customer Reviews:
Should be read simultaneously..........2007-09-09
...with "Tropic of Cancer." For newbies, read the synopsis of Anais Nin and Henry Miller at "wikipedia." Then start reading Volume 1 of Anais Nin's diaries (1931 - 1934). After a while, maybe 30 - 40 pages you will want to take a break. So, pick up "Tropic of Cancer" and read the first couple of chapters. Anais had Henry read her journals; Anais and Henry helped each other with each others works. The preface to "Tropic of Cancer" was written by Anais Nin (at least it was signed by her; legend has it that Henry actually wrote it). "Tropic of Cancer" was published (and immediately banned in the United States) in 1934. (By the way, off topic, Henry Miller reminds me a lot of Hunter S. Thompson, at least "Tropic of Cancer" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.")
A womans heart ...laid out boldly in words for all to see. .......2005-12-31
ANAIS has been someone who has carried me through some tough times in the past...I read her at twenty...and twenty-three and twenty-six. Her troubles were my own and we were kin. She is meant to be read by anyone who loves life...in it's full fleshy sometimes heart rending reality. She writes with the open-heart of a poet, and leaves the reader feeling more than fed. READ ANAIS NIN!
A great read.......2004-10-08
I recomend reading Anais Nin's diary. The book is such poetic prose. Some sentences really took my breath away, the way she can captivate something so beautiful and human in simple words. Since it is a diary, its main focus is her life, but its not selfish, infact she mentions herself very little. The main focus is Henry (Miller) and June, his wife. When Ananis Nin falls inlove with someone, so does the reader. Her descriptive skills gave me goosebumps, you really can see it in your minds eye, hear the music or feel the softness of skin. I highly recomend this to anyone thinking about reading this book, you will come away with a slice of life from 1930's France.
Wonderfully delicate and erotic.......2004-07-30
This is one of the most profound works of literature I have ever read. Nin leads you directly into her life, the nature of the people around her, her feelings and internal conflicts. She writes delicately and powerfully and womanly. Everyone should have a chance to read this.
Worth reading.......2004-04-11
A bit long and occasionally dense, but overall, a worthwhile and insightful glimpse into the life of a remarkable, thoughtful writer in 1930s France.

Definitive Study of a Crucial yet Obscure Chapter of American History.......2006-06-03
Wiley Sword has written the definitive book on one of the most important chapters of our national history; a chapter that has unaccountably remained obscure and understudied despite its overwhelming importance to the development of the United States. The Indian War of 1790 to 1795 was an important postscript to the Revolution, involving undefeated belligerents and a continuing, undeclared cold war with Britain. It was central to the eventual development of a professional, standing army in the United States, an idea that had previously been anathema to many Americans who preferred the idea of national defense through state militias. It contained the worst single defeat of an American army in the 100 years of war between the United States and the Native tribes, a defeat that dwarfed Custer's much more famous one, and was comparable to the Braddock Massacre of the French and Indian War. And it was the single most important action in the one hundred year history of war between the United States and Native American tribes. It marked the best chance the tribes ever had to gain their objectives, and their eventual lose of that war was a mortal body blow to the tribes, making all their proceeding wars little more than the inevitable death throes of their cause. Finally, it cleared the way for the American settlement of the Northwest Territory; modern Ohio, Indiana, Illinios, Michigan, and Wisconsin - it created the heartland of America.
In the Treaty of Paris of 1783, the British not only gave up their claims to the thirteen colonies, but ceded the vast track of land beyond them that would become known as the Northwest Territory - the homeland of many of the tribes that had been their allies during the war. The treaty made no provisions for or any acknowledgement of their former allies, the tribes that inhabited that land. Americans prepared to expand their nation westward, and settlers began pouring into the Ohio country. The undefeated tribes were determined to protect their homeland from the encroachments of an alien civilization, and began to resist with all possible force. The British, seeing in this an opportunity to maintain their influence and their profitable fur trade, as well as a possibility of regaining some of their lost territory, broke their treaty agreements, and continued to maintain several frontier forts on American territory from which they provisioned the tribes and encouraged their resistance to the Americans. For the next seven years, intrepid American settlers floated down the Ohio River to make a life in Indian country, and determined Natives resisted them ferociously and effectively, until the Washington administration decided that they must move decisively against the tribes to make continued westward expansion of the nation possible.
Sword's book effectively captures all the elements of the war, the drama leading to it, and its aftermath. He examines it not only from the American perspective, but from the point of view of the tribes and the British as well, without injecting value judgments. He chronicles not only the military action, but the often flawed and usually deceitful diplomacy that was carried on, and the goals and strategies of all three of the players involved. His descriptions of the battles are riveting, and he captures a sense of the times and the people involved in the action believably. While his writing here had not yet developed to the full potential of his later books, it is still a cut above the typical fare of scholarly histories, and anyone at all interested in the subject should find reading his book enjoyable, as well as enlightening. I know of no other single book that details this crucial chapter of American history half as well as does Sword's book, and I recommend it highly.

Outstanding.......2000-09-16
Very well researched, very readable. I bought the book originally because I was interested in the period, and was glad I did.
Oustanding book on the Federal period!.......1997-05-16
This is one of the most well-researched books on the Federal period of our country that has been written. It has become the "bible" of anyone interested in this turbulent period of our nation's history. If you want to know anything about the settlement of the Northwest Territory, this is the book to read. It has a lot of historical detail in it, but it is still a very readable book. I use it for reference all of the time, living is one of the historical towns mentioned in the book
Book Description
The United States finds itself at the center of a historically unparalleled empire, one that is wealth-generating and voluntary rather than imperialistic, say the authors of this compelling book. William E. Odom and Robert Dujarric examine America’s unprecedented power within the international arenas of politics, economics, demographics, education, science, and culture. They argue persuasively that the major threat to this unique empire is ineffective U.S. leadership, not a rising rival power center.
America cannot simply behave as an ordinary sovereign state, Odom and Dujarric contend. They describe the responsibilities that accompany staggering power advantages and explain that resorting to unilateralism makes sense only when it becomes necessary to overcome paralysis in multilateral organizations. The authors also offer insights into the importance of liberal international institutions as a source of power, why international cooperation pays, and why spreading democracy often inhibits the spread of constitutional order. If the United States uses its own power constructively, the authors conclude, the American empire will flourish for a long time.
Customer Reviews:
A look at America"s worldwide supremacy.......2006-02-23
This book does a brillint job of showing why the liberal institutions in the US give us the flexibility to dominate economically, educationall and in the media. It also goes into the prominent role the US plays in maintaining the inernational order. The book also claims that a strong militay and worldwide bases play an important role in peventing international anarchy. The case is made that the US empire is a voluntary one and that our alliances are essenial to maintining our dominence and international order. This is one of the very best and shortest book I have read on the question of the US empire.
Informative book full of FACTS.......2005-10-16
This book basically dispells all the talk of weakness, in reference to Ameica, that we hear these days. The beginning is a little slow, but once you get into the topic chapters it becomes more interesting.
The authors point out that terrorism is a tactic. President Bush just started mentioning this in the last few months. However, the book has been out for a while.
The book is very good for international relations and political science folks. It is a very good book to pull facts out for your papers, research, and general education on the subject.
