Book Description
In this combination how-to and inspirational book, Kaffe Fassett collaborates with fellow knitwear designer Zoe Hunt to create colorful garments for the whole family. There are 33 basic patterns grouped by motifs, which include squares and plaids, circles and dots, flowers, bows, and more. Eighty variations are fully illustrated; most are in stockinette stitch and easy to knit. Each chapter has a lively introduction by Fassett in which he describes the inspiration for the designs and gives advice on how to make a better finished garment.
Customer Reviews:
Not for the meek of heart, but worth a look!.......2000-03-31
I had heard a great many people say how much they liked Fassett's use of color, and so I found this book and explored. I'm glad I did that before I bought it: I have a very different set of sensibilities when it comes to color than the authors of Family Album.
I've given it a relatively high score, though, for the nice lines of their clothing and the clear instructions. I am just not the right knitter for their designs.
There's nothing here for anyone below the level of an adventurous intermediate knitter (IMHO), but the book itself would be great inspiration to increase your skill if you like their style - great pictures and good-looking models make this almost a coffee table book.
The patterns and colors are too overstated for my taste, but it's very clear to me that they love their subject and they give good value in the book (over thirty designs for about $20 on this site).

Written by James Redfield, and produced by Barnet Bain (Oscar-winning producer of What Dreams May Come), Terry Collis, Beverly Camhe and executive producer Salle Merrill Redfield. The film version of The Celestine Prophecy is certain to re-ignite interest in all of Redfield's work. The Celestine Prophecy: The Making of the Movie features more than 150 full-color photographs taken on the set during shooting on location in Costa Rica, stills from the movie, and commentary on the day-to-day aspects of capturing the magic of the Nine Insights on film for a whole new audience.
Customer Reviews:
Another Best Seller?.......2006-01-11
According to James Redfield, author of the the long-running bestseller "The Celestine Prophecy," the book was a movie in his mind before it ever appeared on the page. "...if truth be known, the book first dawned on me as a series of images, dramatic scenes, that all arrived in my head feeling like movie moments."
The story of the long circuitous path from Redfield's mind to the printed page to film is told in this quite handsome book from publisher Hampton Roads. How the jungle-like settings were discovered and created, the challenges that faced the author, actors and film crew are all colorfully recounted here, and Celestine fans will likely eat it up. It also serves as a kind of paean to the charming and unique American city, St. Augustine, where much of the movie was made. Tad C.
The enchantment of the 9 insights on film.......2005-11-22
We can increase the frequency of guiding coincidences by uplifting every person that comes into our lives, this is the first part of Insight number 8.
The Celestine Prophecy, the Making of the Movie shows how uplifting the movie will be both in the unfolding of the insights and the beauty of the areas where it was filmed.
The movie is a valuable teaching tool that carries the same uplifting energy as the books.
This making of the movie book documents the amazing achievement and takes you inside the imagination of the remarkable people who came together to fulfill James Redfield's ultimate vision.
Lavishly illustrated with more than 160 full color photos, The Celestine Prophecy, the Making of the Movie features productions stills, design artwork and frames from the movie. The film is certain to reignite and expand the dialog from the books about spiritual awareness, to a whole new audience.
This book offers a unique insight on the challenges and rewards of adapting a major best seller to film.
We either fear that human culture is falling apart, or we can hold the vision that we are awakening. Each of us must consciously choose between these two futures. After reading this book, I choose the vision that we are awakening.

Customer Reviews:
Réti or not.......2007-08-15
I like this guy. I initially discovered him from his backgammon books. This is a pretty good book for learning the standard chess openings. I also like his other books in the chess series on middle game tactics and endgame strategy. They're written at the right level for people who know how to play but are essentially beginners as far as serious strategy and tactics go.
Unless you can sort a lot of information in your head, you'll need to read this book with a chess board in front of you, so you can see how things look as these standard opening and defense sequences play out. There are some illustrations provided, but some of these openings unfold over the first ten turnsor so, and then Mr. Robertie throws in variations on the main themes, so it is helpful to be able to see it and follow it on a chess board. That's only a problem if, like me, you do most of your reading while commuting.
One of the other reviewers, with all the tact of your average chess wunderkind, wrote that he couldn't take advice from someone like Mr. Robertie, who would choose such an unflattering picture of himself to put on the back of his books. I think that's a little uncalled for. I personally am not distressed by his appearance. For one thing, I think he might be British, and some of them just look like that. No big deal. In fact, he reminds me a little of the adorable professor character in "Something About Mary" who turns out to be a pizza deliveryman. If anything about Mr. Robertie rubs me the wrong way, it's the way he frequently talks up what we can learn from him, "you'll be amazed" at your improvement, former superior players will now "be throwing up their hands in surrender." That kind of chatter. It gets old. It gives the feel of a late-night ab workout infomercial.
What bothers me the most about this book is something that says more about me than Mr. Robertie. It's the same thing that bothers me when reading up on Doyle Brunson's "Super System" for hold `em, or the backgammon books. It takes the fun out of the games for me to do calculations for every hand or every turn. I have no doubt that knowing the exact number of cards you need to make your hand, or calculating pot odds for every raise and re-raise, or keeping track of exact pip counts in backgammon will improve your game. I'm sure that is the difference between the above average players and the experts. But to me, these improvements come at too high an expense, essentially converting a game into work. I'd much rather have fast action, relying on some combination of instincts and impulses. Particularly in chess, the feeling that one should memorize, know how to play, and know how to defend every opening combination in the repertoire really changes chess from a diversion to a chore. But that's my problem. That's why, in everything I do, I'll always be just good enough to get myself hustled.
Decent Chess Openings Book.......2006-08-26
I had purchased this book before compiling a list based on more reputable sources and while searching for "Winning Chess Openings" by Yasser Sierwan. I don't regret that, however this book would not have been one of the books I had chosen. I found some of the commentary on the openings a little questionable. The book itself is a basic introduction to some of the more commonly used chess openings. What I found really amusing was the inclusion of some that, by the authors own admittance, are relatively obscure and unused today due to easy counters. Why would a book called "Winning Chess Openings" include openings that can be countered so easily? However, as a beginner, the book did provide a good introduction to some basic openings that I will further study up on. For further study, however, I will use "Modern Chess Openings 14th Edition" by Nick de Firmian as recommended by "Complete Idiots Guide to Chess". If your looking for a book that introduces you to basic openings and is fairly easy to read, I would recommend this book. If your a more experienced player looking for more detailed analysis, I would look elsewhere.
OK basic coverage of some major openings for the beginner.......2006-08-08
For a beginner wanting to see what the different openings are about without much detail this book is ok. It has some mistakes and some of the analysis is "suspect". I felt that for a general opening book that covers both ideas and gives enough lines that "Understanding The Chess Openings" does a much better job. A beginner shouldn't be memorizing opening lines anyway, but should be learning the "ideas" behind the moves. So I like the idea of getting a book on chess traps to learn the tactics in the openings that you will find. You have a choice of a number of chess traps books to choose from.
If you are beyond being a beginner then this book would be useless for you.
Worthless.......2006-07-25
Inside the book the author is described as both a master and former US Speed Chess Champion. Two problems: 1) I looked him up on the USCF's own site. He HAS NO rating, meaning he hasn't played enough games to get a rating or hasn't played any. 2) There is no such thing as the US Speed Chess Championship. I'm sure that, if there were, someone other than a bogus master would win it. So that's two lies before the actual book begins.
So, what about the book itself? I don't even think it's any good as a beginner's book. The basics of opening theory can be learned in much better books; indeed, I am at a loss to think of a worse book on the subject. An average tournament player could write a book this good. Who needs a phony-baloney master to tell him this extremely elementary stuff?
A Good Book for the Occasional Player.......2004-08-14
This book will not transform you into the next Bobby Fischer, but it is a great guide for the novice or the occasional chess player. For me, I keep a chess set in my office and play some co-workers on occasion. This simple little book greatly improved my play in a short time.
Robertie begins with "Winning Ideas." With illustations of chess boards and pieces, he lays out the principles of development (getting your pieces out of their starting positions). He also provides some helpful notes on Pawn Structure. Being only an occasional player of chess, I found that these simple principles -- even apart from the later discussion of detailed Openings -- improved my play.
Then the book moves on to chapters about Double King-Pawn openings and the Ruy Lopez, demonstrating such classics as Evans Bambit, The King's Gambit, and the Bishop's Opening. A nice feature is that Robertie uses actual games from the greats to illustrate how particular openings may play out.
But what if you play black? Not to fear. There are three chapters on defenses: Black Half-Open Defenses, The Queen's Gambit, and The Indian Defenses. All very helfpul.
I'm sure the book will help novices seeking to move on the great and glorious chess play, but it seems ideal for the occasional chess player who wants to improve his game and memorize some solid ways to begin the game.

Detailed engineering description of TPS.......2003-10-12
There are a lot of books about the Toyota Production System, but this is one of the most useful for those actually attempting to implement elements of this system. Most of the books on TPS by western authers are just superficial glosses written by MBA's who don't seem to have a clue how to make anything. This book is detailed, specific, clearly written, and very well translated. Some of the material is repetative, nevertheless this is the book to get on TPS.
Excellant book to understand how the TPS evolved........1999-04-23
I enjoyed it since it gave me insight on how TPS evolved and allowed me to better understand not how TPS works but more why.

Book Description
From the shelter of a protective family, to the lessons of tragedy and independence, this is an indelible portrait of a harsh and beautiful country and the inspiring story of a remarkable woman's life.
Customer Reviews:
An Australian Journey.......2007-10-07
This beautiful book tells the story of one girl's childhood on an isolated sheep farm in Australia; that girl would eventually end up as the first woman president of Smith College, one of the finest universities in the United States (part of the Seven Sisters). Before that, she studied at the University of Sydney, moving on to Harvard University in the States. Much like the movie, "My Brilliant Career," the story follows the harsh living conditions of her youth and her meteoric rise to success.
The part of the story that will speak to you most clearly, however, is that of the young girl with golden dreams who faces so much adversity and such little chance of escaping her isolating circumstances. Her father owned 30,000 arid acres in Australia and when the land succumbed to drought, he committed suicide; shortly thereafter, her brother was in an auto accident that resulted in his death. Faced with these tragedies, Conway's mother was overcome with depression and unable to help her daughter succeed. That Jill Ker Conway lets none of that prevent her from reaching a pinnacle of success that no one in her family or community in Australia could ever have imagined for her is the stuff of dreams.
enjoyable read.......2007-02-12
The wonderful autobiography entitled, The Road From Coorain, written by Jill Ker Conway is a must-read! Her engaging and rich detail gives an enchanting description of the Australian life-style from a very unique perspective.
Beginning in the 1930's, young Jill Ker lived with her tightly-knit family on a ranch called Coorain, Australia. Isolated in the desert and located far from Sydney, Coorain, has created an unordinary life-style for not only Jill but for her two brothers, Barry and Bob. Maintaining the remote Coorain is the family's only way to ensure stability and in the eyes of Mr. and Mrs. Ker; the significance of Coorain is considered more important than a formal education. Though, when the dreadful droughts of the arid terrain continue to spontaneously appear, life becomes awfully challenging and difficult for the Ker family. Suffering from famine because of the lack of crops and animals, Coorain becomes involved in a downward spiral. As a result, Jill as well as other family members, encounter the enormous struggle of overcoming the concept of death and sorrow. As Jill grows into a young woman, she faces unfortunate events that set her back, creating various obstacles as she journeys down the unpredictable road of life. Faced with challenges romantically, intellectually, and within the family ultimately affects her career and talents, though somehow Jill miraculously manages to succeed.
Choosing an academic career as a historian, Jill faced the constant struggle of chauvinism living as a young woman during the 1950's. Her passion and remarkable academic achievements clearly demonstrated her natural talent as a student. Unfortunately, the unfair privileges men had in contrast to women was a constant obstacle. Jill had potential and unlike some other women, had the possibility of attaining her high hopes and dreams. Her brilliance and intellectual capability distinguished her as an individual, though she was unfortunately not recognized with equality because she was woman. "But I received a blandly courteous letter thanking me for my interest. I was dumfounded. Milton and I had ranked first in our class and were to be awarded the University Medal jointly for our academic achievements. I could scarcely believe that my refusal was because I was a woman...I knew I was no more and no less intellectually aggressive than Milton and Rob. That left my sex and my appearance." Though Jill Ker faced multiple obstacles throughout her life, she clearly proves that hard work and perseverance is a powerful way to achieve one's goals.
This engaging autobiography is filled with compelling and descriptive prose. Beautifully written, Mrs. Conway eloquently yet succinctly expresses the many conflicts one can be presented in life. Given her natural gravitation towards the subject of history, she enlightens the reader with interesting historical backgrounds of the many places she has traveled. Her simplistic, yet thought-provoking perspectives maintain one's fascination throughout the course of the book. Every moment I spend reading it was enjoyable. Mrs. Conway's, informative yet concise style of writing kept me actively involved. Her marvelously written descriptions, gave me an excellent understanding of the rural Australian life-style: "On the western side the mountains' gentler hills sloped down to rolling countryside; valleys covered with rich black soil sheltered streams winding westward. The gentle slopes rising from each watercourse were crowned with orchards in blossom, while below the contoured patterns of spring crops burst in brilliant green from the dark earth. I liked looking at this scenery with the dew still on it, well before the heat of the day." This autobiography filled with endless drama, love, and the hardships of life, is a definite must-read!
no title.......2005-11-19
I related to and thoroughly enjoyed this book. Conway's descriptions of Australia are beautiful. She has written a follow-up book which I would like to read also. And on second reading, I feel more and more that perhaps her mother had some chemical imbalance, because she changed so drastically. Either that, or her repressed emotions after the deaths of her husband and her oldest son in the space of five years, led her to the bitter old woman she became.
An Excellent Choice - The Road from Coorain.......2005-09-22
I'd recommend the The Road from Coorain anytime. I thought Jill Ker Conway's description of Australia was wonderfully descriptive. I felt I was there as she described her life in the bush as well as the city. Her ability to convey her feelings and her understanding of her situation growing up in a less than idealic life came through the pages as each situation developed. The book left me admiring her strength of character and understanding.
Unlike a book I recently read about the life a a political figure, I found Jill was able to touch on the emotion and struggle that life had dealt her and potray an understanding of the impact on her life. Definitely worth reading.
I loved this one and loved Sujoya Roy's novel too.......2005-09-07
If you enjoyed this book, try For Ganesh: Remover of Obstacles, by Sujoya Roy. Both books tell compelling stories of coming of age of trailblazing women who came to the U.S. from other countries to pursue education. Ker Conway brought her Australian experience; Roy's heroine brought Hindu and India culture. Both have contributed significantly to our world.

Customer Reviews:
ARMORED CAV.......2005-07-07
I WAS IN THE SAME UNIT AS COL. MAHLER IN VIETNAM IN 70-71
WE TRADED IN THE HEAVY/SLOW M-48 AND M-60 TANKS FOR FASTER/LIGHTER M 551 SHERIDANS WITH 152MM GUNS AND MOVED FROM DOWN SOUTH TO THE DMZ AT DONG HA. KNOWN AS THE (...) CAV..
LOOK FORWARD TO READING THE BOOK.. JUST FOUND IT ON THE 3/5 CAV BLACKKNIGHT WEB SITE.
I object! This is a great book on Cavalry Operations!.......2002-12-29
The previous reviewer missed the point. As an Executive Officer Mike Mahler was second in command, and often on-site commander of the unit. In this position he also had a lot of day-to-day contact with supporting and supported units. This is not a blood and guts account of fighting tanks, but one of how Armored Cavalry works. As a former Armored Cav Officer it was a great read and Colonel Mahler did a great job of explaining the complexities and challenge of Cavalry Operations. I wish I had had officers as good as he was commanding me.
As to not ID'ing the unit, that is his choice and I will not fault him for it. Maybe he just did not want to drag up the names of dead or incompetent officers. Who knows.
If I could I would love to talk with the Colonel one on one about his experiences. Great book for anyone interested in Armored Cavalry.
A Staff Weenie's Odd Account of Vietnam.......2001-01-02
COL Michael D. Mahler served as the personnel officer (S-1) of the 1st Brigade/1st Infantry Division from August-December 1967 and Executive Officer of 3-5th Cavalry/9th Infantry Division from December 1967 to August 1968. The weirdest thing about this memoir is that Mahler never identifies his own unit or any other, or any individuals; everything and everyone is referred to in generic terms. It is very odd to read an account where no names are mentioned. With all this secrecy, I'm surprised that Mahler didn't conceal that this was a Vietnam memoir and instead call it "Orangeland". Essentially, this is a collection of anecdotes, war stories and observations strung together. Some are interesting, some are not. This work is lacking in humanity, since there are no characters (just generic, faceless, company commanders, platoon leaders, etc.) and there are no great lessons here. It is also odd for a non-green tabber (i.e. a unit commander) to be writing a memoir; the actual trigger-pullers might have done a better job. There is not even any of the drama of supporting a combat unit; Mahler could have gotten much more into the specifics of armor logistics but instead he just glosses over it. Overly generalized to a fault. One suspects Mahler is some kind of weenie by the end. Of note, the squadron intelligence officer (S-2) is never mentioned, so I guess intelligence and what the enemy was up to was not a big concern for Mahler. The maps are few and crude. The only slight value of this book is the paucity of other armored unit memoirs from Vietnam. This book is far inferior to Sergeant Ralph Zumbro's Tank Sergeant.
A Superlative Account Of Vietnam 1967-8.......2000-12-27
Major Mahler served in an Armored cavalry unit in Vietnam before and during the Tet Offensive, and here he relates his experiences during that time.
One may not associate armor with Vietnam, but armor did play a significant role in the war, as Major Mahler demonstrates here.
The stories within run the gamut, from the Birddog pilot shot down to the discovery of VC grains hidden along a road that the troopers confiscate, only to find that a nearby village gets pillaged by the VC because the grain was hidden along the road for the VC to take; the troopers gather enough grain to give back to the stricken villagers. There is also the tunnel that an APC falls into - and promptly unearths a surprised NVA general. There are the running shootouts during the Tet Offensive, and children accidently hit by .50 caliber machine gun fire and operated on by Army medics. There is the night an enemy company literally walks into an ambush by armor and a delightfully one-sided battle with an NVA batallion holed up in a large village, a battle that somewhat resembles the climax of Invasion USA.
There is also Major Mahler's note on the situation on the ground following Tet - of how farmers who could not use roads the year before could now take their crops to market, "and this was progress that could be seen and felt in a war where progress could not easily be quantified."
Major Mahler takes us to Vietnam through his words and we see what went on.
Ringed in Steel: Armored Cavalry in Viet Nam.......2000-04-19
Having served under Major Mahler during a time covered by part of his book, I can say everthing presented in the book is accurate. The book contains a factual account of the actions of the 3rd of the 5th Armored Cavalry in Viet Nam while Major Mahler was Executive Officer. With it lack of blood and guts, or gory details, it is a book which my wife and family can read as a way of getting some insite into what my life was like during those days so long ago. For years I had wondered why our officers had kept bringing us back to the same over-night position. We came back so many times that, as expected, we were attacked in force by a well prepared NVA. Our losses were high, both in terms of men and equipment. Even as a PFC, I had known our repetative use of the same positions, right along the side of Highway 1, was potentially desasterious. Until reading "Ringed in Steel", I had placed the blame opon our officers. Major Mahler exposed the orders, given by the Marines, objected to by our officers, which dictated that our unit return to this position every night. My confidence is now renewed in the decision making capability of the United States Army Officers Corps. For an insite into how our military operates, how decisions are made, what factors enter into those decisions, this book is a must read.
Book Description
If the nuclear balance of terror helped maintain the 'long peace' between the united States and the Soviet Union during the Cold Ware, will the spread of nuclear weapons to new states also help stabilize international relations in the future? In this increasingly complex world, how do issues such as global terrorism, missile defense, and the Indian-Pakistani conflict factor into the decisions states make about nuclear weapons?
In The Spread of Nuclear Weapons: A Debate Renewed, two major international relations scholars resume their well-known dialogue about these important questions, as well as others. Kenneth Waltz, the dean of realist theory in international relations, expands on his argument that "more may be better," contending that new nuclear states will use their acquired nuclear capabilities to deter threats and preserve peace. Scott Sagan, the leading proponent of organizational theories in international politics, continues to make the counterpoint that "more will be worse": novice nuclear states lack adequate organizational controls over their new weapons, which makes for a high risk of either deliberate of accidental nuclear war.
The global community has long been fascinated byas well as terrified ofnuclear weapons. This short and engaging book is required reading for citizens and statesmen, as well as scholars and students.

good.......2007-10-17
Book was in good condition. As for content, it was for a course, so what does it matter?
The best.......2007-01-11
Certainly the best debate ever produced about the existence of nuclear weapons and its distribution around the world. Highly recomended!
Simple debate, tremendous consequences.......2003-02-17
This books puts together two colliding authors on whether the proliferation of nuclear weapons is a good idea or not. Waltz, one fo the premier figures of realpolitik, argues (brilliantly, even though I disagree with him) that proliferation is a good idea. Sagan argues there are too many organizational risks in the proliferation system.
The two present their arguments, and then respond to each other's argument. It is a fascinating argument, one that can be discussed in 1000 pages, but the authors do a tremendous job of synthesizing it and pointing out the major strenghts and weaknesses of each other's argument. In today's world, where we are willing to go to war to prevent proliferation, it is useful to take a step back and really understand what the main problems arising by proliferation are.

Book Description
This volume contains the proceedings of two conferences. The first part covers `The Non-Sleeping Universe: Stars and the ISM', and has activity as the underlying theme. It reviews the current status of astroseismology, stellar rotation and activity. Highlights include the time behaviour of phenomena related to activity, both in the case of the Sun and of its much younger analogues, in view of the results of recent space missions. It also examines the diagnostic tools and the models, once again for the Sun and young low mass stars, including the jets and flows closely associated with those stars during the extreme phases of pre-main-sequence evolution.
The second part comprises `The Non-Sleeping Universe: from Galaxies to the Horizon'. It covers topics ranging from high energy phenomena on galactic scales, such as gamma-ray bursts, active galactic nuclei and intense periods of star formation, to competing models which attempt to explain the formation of large-scale structures in the Universe. It also addresses the theory of fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background radiation and their present observational status, together with the connection between the evolution of the number density of galaxy clusters with time and the present value of the matter density in the Universe.
The book is therefore unique in providing an overview of recent developments in a variety of areas, often kept separated, covering a very wide range of spatial and temporal scales.
