5 out of 5 stars A "Classy" gift for your favorite young person.......2006-02-05

I was unfamiliar with Florian Rodari`s "Weekend" series of children's books, so I thought I was buying one for adults. What I actually got was far better: some "face" time with this marvelous Spanish portraitist and probably as good an understanding of his basic painting style as I would have achieved by reading an adult title. The surprise found inside this gem included an exciting, vicarious weekend with "Grandfather Velasquez," portrait painter of royalty. It also included a whirlwind, behind-the-scenes tour of King Philip's palace, complete with "Grandfather's" observations about the people he painted and their real perspectives. Since Velasquez painted the royal children, dwarfs, and palace pets, these are described in detail (including information about their daily lives) and should be of special interest to children. This would be a wonderful and classy gift for a young person in the six- to 13- year age range. Or get one for your grownup self, acquaint yourself with Velasquez, then give your copy to a deserving young person!

Loads of info on tops and skirts but not a thing on pants. Crazy man... Crazy!

4 out of 5 stars Clear illustrations, copious examples, bad puns.......2002-07-04

I encountered this book at the beginning of trying to teach myself clothing design, and found it immediately illuminating.

The book is divided into four sections: Bodice, Collar, Skirt, Sleeve. Using a series of pictorial examples, you are shown how to progress from the basic pattern through many, many variations, using dart movement and seams. Each example takes up a full page, with the minimum text needed and lots of illustrations. (Each example is given a punny name, such as "Seams to Me" or "Absence makes the Dart...Grow Yonder".)

The book starts with a section on the Bodice, covering close-fitting, loose-fitting, and flared versions. The Bodice section starts with a basic pattern, showing how a simple piece of fabric drapes across a bust form, and then showing the flat pattern version of the same thing. A series of examples then show you many ways to modify the basic pattern by moving darts, combining darts with seams, gathering excess fabric, and slashing and spreading the pattern. Each technique is shown by multiple examples, starting with the simplest changes and progressing to complex ones.

If you like learning by example, the detailed drawings in this book will make it very easy for you to learn flat pattern clothing design.

      Book Description

This is a two book series. The first text, in English, covers the wide range of German films. The second text covers a selection of the same films with emphasis on German language skills. Two texts, one covering 31 German films in English; the other, 12 of those in German. Thus, one or both can be used for courses in German film in English, courses in German film in German, or courses which for various reasons might cater to students taking either track simultaneously in the same course. The series is designed to appeal to professors who teach courses in general education, liberal arts, cinema, or who conduct a course in German film exclusively in German, or for where students share the same class (and films) for those two different courses.

5 out of 5 stars It's not just about the money.......2007-04-20

Hopkins's career began at the dawn of advertising and copywriting. As his career progressed so did advertising and he gives us a behind the scenes look at many advertising campaigns from the late 1800's-1920's. Hopkins almost single-handedly helped take copywriting out of its "swaddling clothes."

Of equal interest is his personal history. He was raised in a strict religious home and expected to become a minister. But at age 17 he delivered a sermon that revealed his true beliefs, which were more liberal than his mother's, and he said it was the defining moment of his life. Not once, however, does he criticize his parents or his upbringing and he credits his mother for his advertising and copywriting skills.

Hopkins launched his career in Grand Rapids, Michigan and eventually moved to Chicago, and other cities, for bigger and better jobs. Yet he says that he wondered if remaining in Grand Rapids and living a quiet life wouldn't have been the better choice. He remained connected to normal, real people even after becoming affluent and said he learned much about contentment from them. Hopkins's attitude is very different from most authors of modern business and personal finance books, where it's all about the money.

Scientific Advertising is, as you already know, must reading for advertisers and copywriters. The chapters are short and address very specific topics: headlines, letters, individuality, telling a full story, and, my favorite, service. "The good salesman does not merely cry a name...He pictures the customer's side of his service until the natural result is to buy."

In this book you will not only learn about advertising but you will encounter a humble man who remained detached from the trappings that advertising can sometimes present.

5 out of 5 stars This is the "Bible" for direct marketing........2007-02-23

If you are going to be successful in direct marketing you need to the buy this book and read it until you can quote from it. Study this book and it will pay off.

5 out of 5 stars My Life in Advertising and Scientific Advertising.......2007-01-30

This should be a must reading in every single business university on the planet earth that teaches marketing and advertising. Brilliant book!

5 out of 5 stars Timeless advise on advertising and marketing.......2006-09-04

Claude Hopkins was an outstanding copywriter of his time, and his ideas and philosophy found in Scientific Advertising, written in 1923, and My Life in Advertising, written in 1927, are still relevant today.

This book starts with My Life in Advertising, which chronicles his life from his humble beginnings to his successes later in life. Hopkins story highlights that fact that beyond being a master at copywriting, he had a deep understanding of marketing strategy and human psychology.

In Scientific Advertising, Hopkins offers his advice on a variety of subjects including salesmanship, specificity, headlines, psychology, test campaigns and much more. These principles are based on the valuable lessons he learned from experience and repeated testing through keyed advertising and traced returns on coupons.

Hopkins was more than just a great ad man who understood the common man; he was a master at marketing. Though the material in this book was written over 80 years ago, Claude Hopkins' life, work ethic, ideas and advice are inspirational. I highly recommend this book.

            4 out of 5 stars Marketing classic.......2006-08-10

Two marketing classics by Claude Hopkins - My life in Advertising and Scientific Advertising. These are both marketing classics. Any student of marketing should read them.

They were written in 1927 and 1923 respectively so many of the vignettes were very dated but quite entertaining and almost historic.

One concept that makes him a kindred spirit is his belief that work can be as fun as any play. He was also a great believer in change and adaptability. He knew that historic success does not ensure future success. They both inspired me to rethink our marketing. I loved both books tremendously and highly recommend them(I am a marketer at heart).

Looking for a long-lost friend? Perhaps siblings separated at early ages? Or what if you'd like to know more about a prospective tenant or employee? Get the Facts on Anyone can help. Investigative reporter Dennis King will teach you how to unearth useful data about your subject. King packs a lot of information into the chapters, covering everything from basic research techniques and the use of readily available resources to details on how to detect "paper trippers" with false identities. You'll also learn how to find "missing" people and how to get background information on others through a wide range of sources: newspapers, court records, military records, and "special methods" including license-plate surveillance and garbage analysis. Some of King's advice seems a bit paranoid (he advises "backgrounding" dates, lovers, and spouses), but much of it is valuable: Knowing the details of your lawyer's or physician's professional past would certainly help grant peace of mind. A great bibliography and lists of databases point you to additional sources for in-depth searches. This book would be a useful reference to employers, landlords, and anyone engaged in genealogical research. Journalists and other detail-oriented researchers will find it invaluable. Get the Facts on Anyone will teach you how to follow leads, paper trails, and your own instinct to find the information you desire. --C.B. Delaney

This is a great book. King has written a comprehensive guide to finding information on anyone, especially if they are to play an essential role in your life -- doctor, attorney, lover, etc. I am particularly impressed with his chapter Checking Out Your Date, Lover or Spouse, which should be SOP for women today; and his chapter Checking Out Your Physician -- something most of us have not known how to do before now. I agree almost entirely with the fine review written by Roger Kennedy. Just a few more points to add: (1) I think what sticks in my mind more than anything else are the horrific marches and the lack of medical care - the authors descriptions are all the more memorable for their off-handed understatement. (2) It's also an interesting recording of the social mores of the time - the author feels that the Lash is a necessity, and deplores the idea of having promotions done by merit rather than by noble birth. Not what you might expect to hear from a commoner serving in the ranks!

5 out of 5 stars Harris is the inspiration for Sharpe.......2001-01-20

This book is one of the classic Peninsular War recollections of the period. Harris was a devil-me-care lad of the English shires, who was first chosen by lot to join the English militia in 1806. Once in Ireland he becomes enamored of the green-jacketed 95th Rifles, Britian's new experimental Rifle corps, and decides to join them as a volunteer. The memoirs of Harris and many others like him were no doubt the inspiration for Bernard Cornwall's now famous "Sharpe" series. But Harris's work is certainly worth reading for its own merit, as it provides a vivid impression of what it was like to be a British soldier in the Napoleanic period. Unlike many of the memoirs of his compatriots, Harris only served for a brief time. He experinced Britian's initial efforts to support Spain in her rebellion against napolanic France's domination. As part of that early expedition, harris sees action at Rolica and Vimero (1808), and partakes in the grim retreat to Coruna (1809). He is thus privy only to the initial stages of what would become the Peninsular War in Spain (1808-1814) Harris's recolllections are vivid, but at times confused and lack chronology. This is reflective of the fact that he was a common ranker, and his level of education was somewhat less than many officiers. This does not detract from the value of his work; for Harris is in fact an amusing writer with an adroit sense of humor. He recollects his experinces as they come to mind, and the reader often feels as though he is seated right next to him relaying his stories as they come to mind. At times this can be confusing, and some knowledge of the period certainly helps in understanding the merits of this work. Christopher Hibbert has provided some valuable notes both in the introduction and within the body of the work, which adds greatly to it. Modern readers will certainly find Harris worthwhile, and with the recent interest sparked by the "Sharpe series", will see how the real thing compares to the fictionalized character. Sharpe is most certainly part Harris, and the reader also gets an understaning of the 95th regiment as well. Worth having.

                            Product Description

Pressing challenges face America's transportation networks, despite the passage of two key pieces of federal legislation in the 1990s that offered a new framework for transportation practices and helped to level the playing field between highway and alternative transportation strategies, as well as between old and new communities. Congestion is a hallmark of many metropolitan areas, while infrastructure is fraying. Working families often face daunting commutes to jobs whether they live in the metropolitan outer fringe or the heart of the city. And transportation funding, rather than creating new jobs and economic activity overall, typically shifts development from one metropolitan area to another. Here, experts in the field of transportation provide ideas for reform that could help state, metropolitan, and local leaders apply practical solutions to our nation's transportation dilemmas.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bird Reference.......2005-06-18

Ever since my husband & I put up our birdfeeder and birdbath, we've had many interesting birds coming in our backyard each day. We both love to watch them, and are always wondering what type of birds they are.

I happened across this book recently & decided to purchase it - at this price, you honestly can't beat it! Since it was so cheap I didn't expect much, but as I began browsing through it, I was really impressed! It includes beautiful pictures of many, many different types of birds, and has a lot of great info. on each. The author also includes chapters on:

                              Understanding birds
                              Birding at home
                              How to go birding
The habitat bird finder - this tells you where you can find specific types of birds (i.e. woodlands, shore, etc...)

This is a great reference book to have for anyone interested in birds - from the beginner to the "pro". I highly recommend it.

Birding Western Massachusetts features over 26 great birding locations in Western Massachusetts. Every site has been chosen either for diversity and volume of bird life, or for its unique and rare birds. All sites are easily accessible and open to the public year-round. Whether you are an avid birder looking for specific birds, or a casual nature enthusiast with an interest in seeing different kinds of birds, this guide will provide you with everything you need to make every birding experience a success.

Author Robert tougias presents a "habitat" approach to birding, showing how to use the awareness of habitat to find birds. With mountains, meadows, rivers, and reservoirs, a wide variety of habitats exists in western Massachusetts--from sub-alpine conditions to pitch pine scrubland. Within each habitat, a unique set of birds can be found. And what a variety! There are over 100 different birds nesting in western Massachusetts, and as many as 300 different birds are recorded annually through the seasons. Few people realize the ideal situation of such a large variety of birds, together with a large number of easily accessible places in which to view them. It is a winning combination for every birder at every level to enjoy. This guide allows you to seize this opportunity in an easy, userfriendly way.

Birding Western Massachusetts is written in a readable style that motivates the reader and helps ensure a productive birding day afield. It describes precise locations and seasons where rare and abundant species may be found. By carefully selecting the sites, you have the opportunity to see everything from eagles to songbirds to rare owls, shorebirds, and waterfowl. Also revealed are the best sites and times for viewing the numerous southern and northern species that migrate regularly through this region. The challenge of finding and identifying birds is made easier with trail maps, site directions, illustrations (by the author), information on bird identification and birding techniques, as well as the unique Quick Locator Reference, enabling you to quickly find the best sites for any bird. This guide will soon make better birders out of each reader.

4 out of 5 stars Not the usual bird guide.......2003-08-29

This is a browsing book, not a field guide. Birds are not illustrated. Instead there are drawings of places where birds commonly live ("habitats").

The best part of this book is the chart of bird sounds. I looked up "squawking" and found great blue heron. Always wondered what was making that noise at the end of the dock. Another list identifies common owls. Does the bird scream "kschhh" or mutter "hoo-hooho-hoo-o"?

Because of all the unusual lists, a great addition to a shelf of bird books.
