Book Description
Throughout Western history, interest in the Far East has moved in waves, in ever-changing patterns. Zen in the Fifties looks at the influence of the East, and of Zen Buddhism in particular, on a number of recent Western artists. Interest in Zen grew in the 1950s as new artistic, philosophical and psychological theories opened up the way for Western artists to explore both interior and exterior landscapes. Helen Westgeest brings into her analysis the work of John Cage, Ad Reinhardt and Mark Tobey in America, and Yves Klein and Pierre Alechinsky in France, and shows how the ideas, methods and works of these and certain other artists display affinities with those of the Zen masters. The influence of modern Western art on Japanese artists is also discussed, providing a little–noticed perspective on the West.Zen in the Fifties looks at some of the most important centers of modern art in France, Germany, the United States and Japan and offers a fascinating insight into Zen, and the characteristics of Zen art.

Visionaire #33: Touch, a boxful of cardboard creatures dressed up in fur, feathers, velvet, and netting, is a marriage of paper dolls and Pat the Bunny for very sophisticated grownups. As with every edition of Visionaire, the quarterly publication of style and design, Touch is high-concept eye candy dedicated to a theme in limited, numbered editions of fewer than 3,500. This time out, Visionaire honors the 75th anniversary of the Italian designer and furrier Fendi. A heavy matte black cardboard package gives way to a large metal box of brushed gold, perforated with a grid of squares, a cold touch of industrial design that hints at the Fendi logo and yet somehow implies an animal carrying case with air holes. Slide off the lid, and there's the animal: Fendi's soft, supple, pony skin cache-col (yes, it can be worn) enfolded around a stack of unbound, heavy-stock pages, each depicting the creation of a leading designer and stamped or embossed with elaborate printing techniques. Several of the bodies wear Fendi, of course: spare and bright-colored geometric shapes on headless torsos. Other standouts include Yohji Yamamoto's black-robed figure on a shiny silver background clutching a bruise-colored faux fur muff and Dior's newspaper cutout of a lean female form in a feathery dress, stock reports running up her leg. Alexander McQueen's extraterrestrial archer in a yellow sandpaper top and paintbrush skirt strikes a witty note, as does Junya Watanabe's bemused skeleton that can be transformed into a snowman with tiny head and feet. You won't be able to keep your hands off.

Not only Fendi........2000-12-13
Information correction. The 20 cards are not only from Fendi, they also contain Dior, Chanel, GUCCI, Prada...etc. You will like it very much.
It is the best visionaire in this two years.......2000-12-04
I started collecting visionaire two years ago, I think #33, Touch, is the best issue throughout these two years. (It is even better than LV #30). The brushed golden metal box is shiny and grand. There are 20 Fendi 2000/2001 fashion desigen collection image cards, every card is produced by different printing techniques, for instance, foil-stamping, sculpt-embossing, 3D...etc, It is creative and beautiful. A wearable pony skin scarf is used for packing the 20 cards in order to put them inside the golden metal box. This scarf is definitely the image of Fendi fashion style. Both scarf, golden box and image card are very match in colour and style. It is a perfect art design except it is a little bit expensive. (Actually, I really hope to cancel half star of the 5 I rated above because of the higher price) However, I still don't know how to wear the scarf. Anyway, if you like collecting beautiful creative design product and you can afford, buy it. I think you will like it because it is a full marks-5 star product.

Artcore volume 3.......2007-05-12
Excellant transaction and quick delivery. The context of the book was more than what I expected.
Not as good as it could be.......2006-03-04
While there certainly are some very nice images in this short book there are also some cheap nude photos that are not that well done. Also this book was to expensive. For its reletively small amount of content it shouldnt be any more than 15 to 20 bucks.
A BIT OF THE HARD STUFF, PLEASE!.......2005-10-04
This is the third volume in SQP's Erotic collection of art, photography, and comic strip art. The Artcore books are decidedly more explicit than most of the material from SQP and as such is for mature adults only. What certainly sets the Artcore series apart is its eclectic blend of different forms of erotic material. Robi is Co-owner of the German comic book publishing house "Schwarzer Turm" which publishes translated versions of famous comic books such as "Usagi Yojimbo" as well as comics of German artists. Alraune is an explicit comic written by Robi with art by Toni Gries. A short Alraune strip leads off this volume. Next is the photo section featuring nude model Jana who has posed for erotic artist Drew Posada. This is a 12 page, very explicit spread featuring this beautiful, blonde model. The photography is first-rate and the close-ups are brilliantly clear.
The last two-thirds of Artcore feature erotic pin-up art from some of the top talents in the business including John Hul, Lorenzo DiMauro, Sonia Roji, Marcus Gray, Pete Tapang, Cane Hoyer and more. If you've never seen the work of Erik Drudwyn he's perhaps the most dazzling of the modern erotic artist whose work is photo-realistic genius. Drudwyn provides four painting including the eye-popping piece called "Stardust" featuring a red hot blonde virtually shimmering in all her glory.
Oliver Schramm provides four darkly haunting, black & white pieces and Andreas Raufeisen provides six pages of erotic bondage art. Finally Michael Dutkiewicz, another top talent provides not only the cover to Artcore Volume 3, but a half-dozen interior paintings including "Solar Flare" featuring a nude fire-eater and the self-explanatory "Pole Dancer". This is truly an international production. The book is 80 pages in full color printed on heavy, glossy stock. This is definitely the stronger stuff but a very polished presentation.

great and strange english humour.......2004-11-11
I have bought this book as a gift for friends ever since I owned my first copy. It is funny, beautifully illlustrated and guarenteed to appeal to all artistic types with an affiliation for Monty Python, Black Adder and all things English and comedic! Not for children, even though they love the picture. It stands alone although is really best enjoyed along with the other Lady Coddington fairy books.
I am currently buying a copy for my graphic deisgner and his illustrator wife. I have no doubt he will add it to his collection of published weirdness!
Scotch-guard your wardrobe and prepare to be amused...........2003-03-01
...because Strange Stains and Mysterious Smells is, aside from nicely done art (by Brian Froud) and brilliant satire (by Terry Jones), a fairly good glimpse into the sort of creatures that are around even if you don't want them to be, even if you aren't the sort to have pixies and goblins about because you don't believe in them or believe in them so much it creeps the little creatures out. Check under your VCR or underneath the layer of papers covering a desk to see what I mean, as you've probably got Doggitus Mucilagus sticking some loose change to the wood.
Extremely funny and far from fiction, get it for yourself and as a gift for your favourite neat-freak.
Rather inventive.......2001-07-03
Hilarious and all-together head-scratching, as you find yourself realizing they're talking about something you've been wondering about all along. You may have thought you were the only one undergoing the cruel and unusual punishment of these noxious fumes and stains, but here you find you are not alone... If you're going to read this aloud as a bed-time book or as a book of quotations, you are required by law to read it aloud with an English accent. If you cannot speak with an English accent or if it is terrible beyond measure, please read silently. Don't even mouth the words as you read. If by chance, you meet someone who is talking about smells and stains in a bad English accent, smack him. If he's bigger than you, you may let him off with a warning...or politely kick him and run, because big guys take longer to build up the inertia to accelerate than little guys. If he doesn't catch you and is breathing heavily, then run up to him and smack him. That should get the point across.
Not just funny..........2000-12-12
...but also a bit disarming! Some of the stains and "odor" illustrations in the book look... well, "fresh". I'm not altogether sure that I want to know how the book publisher achieved this effect, but it definately adds bonus points in my mind.
So, the authors of the book claim to have found a gadget that allows them to communicate with smells and stains. Odd, to think that such things are sentient, but nonetheless, their commentary is, of course, hilarious.
Not that I mean to give anything away, but my personal favorite is "The Great Stain of the Apocalypse" and the theory surrounding it. You'll have to get the book (which I recommend) to find out more!
Have been looking for uncle Quentin.......2000-06-20
So nice that you all found uncle Quentin. I do need to talk with him. Can't believe everything that you read. What he is not telling you about is all the fairies that escaped from London and landed in (of all places) Des Moines, Iowa. I need to know where to get in touch with uncle.

Customer Reviews:
Should be titled Site Book For Retail.......2007-03-11
This is a good, pratical book- although it only focuses on retail development. No mention of office, multifamily, industrial, etc. Still worth it though.
Great Resource.......2007-01-19
This book is a great resource for even the most seasoned real estate professionals. It is refreshing to see a scientific approach to site selection that successfully integrates the art of real estate qualitative analysis.
easy to understand and easy to apply.......2005-07-29
This book analyzes the the factors that go into choosing a good site for a commercial venture.
This alone would have been enough to earn 5 stars. The book goes on to present a system for rating potential sites that uses the factors explained in previous chapters. You can customize the process by changing the importance each factor carries.
A software package is offered for sale that provides templates and performs calculations. However, if you are handy with Excel, you should be able to recreate the template/calculations within a few hours.
This excellent book promises to be a guide to choosing commercial real estate. It delivers, in spades, on that promise.
It's a Roadmap for Site Selection!.......2003-04-04
This book was referred to me by a co-worker (who happened to be an expert in real estate). Thanks!! I only wish I'd stumbled upon it years earlier.
After struggling with a homegrown spreadsheet modeling approach in my first retail business, this book brought together all the missing pieces in a way that made perfect sense. It gave me a framework to account for the qualitative site feature data that is so important, yet so difficult to deal with. It became my roadmap for site selection.
The logical model outlined in this book comes to life through Fenker's humorous examples of tips & traps.
If your business depends on good sites, you must read this book!
Great for everyone.......2002-04-27
This book is great for everyone from the beginner to the seasoned sales forecaster.
I browse it every now and again to remind myself that there are fundamentals to this business, and we know how costly veering from those can be.
It's a fast read, and I highly recommend it to those doing site selection.

China '66-67 vs USA '02-07.......2007-03-13
The parallels I see between the behaviour and actions shown by the Chinese Government in 1966-68 in this book regarding the "Cultural Revolution's Gang of Four" and the US government's use of the "Patriot's Act" toward US citizen's and prisoner's in Guantánamo to be frightfully and terrifyingly similar.
Read this book and make your own conclusions.
Unbelievable - great inside story of Cultural Revolution.......2007-03-04
Five stars. Top notch book by a victim of the Cultural Revolution. You wouldn't believe it if it was fiction. It's hard to believe as fact, but China is a lot different than the US, especially during the Mao years (1949 - 1976). This is a great look of an average "capitalist" citizen who has to struggle to survive.
I think this could actually go in the "Survival" genre. Most in that genre survive against nature, but a few (including Victor Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning" survive against brutal governments.
I haven't had a book keep me up late into the night for a while. Highly recommended to all.
begs one question.......2007-01-02
An excellent book in the vein of the creative memoir, reminiscent in this way of Karr's Liar's Club. Historical fiction at its best. Occasionally, however, the book feels a little Rocky Balboa, i.e. too epic and romantic in the self-heroizing of the narrator to be completely credible. One thing that is never explained is why the Red Guards would go to all this trouble with her, trying to get her to confess, when they were essentially not accountable to anyone for their actions and could just as well have taken her out and shot her if they felt like it, or those they seem to want her to betray. She seems to have some secret knowledge that they in fact won't do this, which she doesn't share with us, which takes away a lot of the boldness and daring from her standing up to them as she does. It's great Count of Monte Cristo stuff, but there seems no good reason for all the care they take with her, instead of either shooting her or just locking her up a la gulag and throwing away the key. Unless of course the Red Guards were really as retarded as they seem in the book.
Chinese Hardball.......2006-11-25
A philosopher suggested that anyone wanting to understand the American people should first learn the game of baseball. Similarly, it might be said that to begin to fathom the inscrutable Chinese, one would do well to first learn Go. Whereas, baseball requires strength, speed, agility, and quick thinking, to excel in the board game Go, only superior intelligence and great patience are required. In Go, power and speed, be they mental or physical, are of little import. There are no home runs in Go. In Life and Death in Shanghai, our real life heroine relies on her intelligence and patience in a seven year battle against tyranny. Amazingly, her story is told unemotionally. Bit by bit, as if placing Go stones, she explains her situation. Stripped of her belongings. Accused of spying. Separated from her daughter. Jailed. Tortured. Ill. Interrogated. Hemorrhaging. Losing teeth. Isolated. Released. Watched.
For every harrowing event she always seems to have an appropriate studied response. As vicarious observers, the esthetic of her performance is on a par with hearing Yehudi Menuhin in his prime. Whether its DiMag in the outfield, Dr. J. to the hoop, or Cheng in a "struggle" meeting, there are few experiences that can match the thrill of seeing a truly great artist perform at the top of their game.
Triumph of the Human Spirit.......2006-11-05
This may be one of the most important books I have ever read. The lessons within its pages are as much about a period of history in China as they are about the power and strength of the human character. I bought the book as one of many to provide me with insight into China's recent history and what I took away was so much more than that. Nien Cheng sets the bar high for standards of integrity, discipline and commitment to the self. I am grateful she shared her painful, though triumphant, story with the world. This should be required reading for anyone interested in Chinese culture, but also for anyone who welcomes inspiration to overcome life's hardships.

A Lesson in the Triumph of the Individual.......2002-08-06
This is a difficult story to read, especially if one has lived through the Cultural Revolution. The Revolution is a trauma to the collective conscience of the Chinese people. It is a psychological scar that will take much therapy to erase. Ms. Cheng's autobiography works as therapy. It works because it is brutally honest. More than 10 years after its publication, this reader has finally worked up the courage to read it. Ms. Cheng bluntly suggests that a system, that makes the ordinary people living under it liars, cheats, spies, and petty thieves, has no redeeming value. One senses that Ms. Cheng was the lone voice of sanity and reason in a world so insane that it made her seem mad. One marvels at her stubborn sense of dignity and integrity, and gets the hope that the individual could triumph over system. To this reader, Ms. Cheng is an inspiration and a winner in the game of life for like few, who went through the Cultural Revolution, she is able to look herself in the mirror and know that she triumphed as a human being.
Unforgettable memoir..........2002-05-21
Nien Cheng's Life and Death in Shanghai is a very well written and inspiring autobiography. The story is based on her experiences and obstacles that she faced during the Cultural Revolution in Communist China. Cheng is a very courageous and intelligent woman who has survived many terrible situations. The distinction between her life before and after the Cultural Revolution clearly reveals the corruption and curelty of Communist China during that time. Cheng tells every detail, which captures the reader's heart and mind. Although her writing is not very emotional or passionate, her unique and amazing way of writing leaves the reader with emotions and sympathy. The book is not only a source of inspiration, but also a source of very precise historical information. The purpose of the book was for Cheng to reveal the victimization of the upper class of China. Because this kind of memoir is rare, it makes the book even more unique and interesting to read. Throughout the memoir, Cheng faces obstacles that seem impossible to overcome, but she has remarkable willpower and faith that got her through brutal times. Her confidence and willpower truly stirs the reader. Although Cheng faced horrible conditions in Communist China, she does not feel hatred for the country. This illustrates her compassionate and forgiving personality and good nature. This autobiography truly inspires and captivates the reader.

Book Description
'The enemy attacked me about 4pm this day, and, after one of the severest contests of the war, was repulsed at all points
I shall remain in my present position tomorrow, but am not prepared to say, until better advised of the condition of the army, whether my operations will be of an offensive or defensive character.' General Meade's July 2nd dispatch to General-in-Chief Halleck indicated the need to assess the Federal predicament: to this end he called a council of war. The thinking of his commanders was best expressed by General Slocum of XII Corps: 'Stay and fight it out.' As the meeting broke up, Meade turned to General John Gibbon whose division held the centre of the Federal line. 'If Lee attacks tomorrow,' he said 'it will be on your front
he has made attacks on both our flanks and failed, and if he concludes to try again, it will be on our center.' His judgment was to be proved correct as the Confederates began to advance.

Entrenched Union positions at Gettysburg on the Third Day.......2001-12-25
The Osprey Order of Battle series presents the military enthusiast with a microanalysis of famous battles, in this case devoting six volumes to the pivotal three-day Civil War Battle of Gettysburg. This 11th volume in the series (the Gettysburg books do not appear sequentially) is devoted to the deployment of the Union Army of the Potomac under General Meade on July 3, 1863, while the 10th volume does the same for the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. This book provides comprehensive organization diagrams, an analysis of operational objectives, and most importantly where each unit was at what point during the final day of this pivotal battle, including both the "tooth" combat elements and the vital "tail" support troops. The operational analysis is quite excellent and surprisingly concise, albeit more so from the Confederate perspective than the Union, especially with regards to Pickett's Charge. This volume includes dozens of detailed maps, charts and photographs, which should serve to impress the vast majority of readers interested in this pivotal Civil War battle.
While all this detailed information will be on great interest to those who want to study what happened in Gettysburg in minute detail, I really think the chief utility of this particular volume is for the war gamming enthusiast who wants to give Pickett's Charge a second chance at taking the Bloody Angle on Cemetery Ridge. I have used these books to create a brigade level version of the Battle of Gettysburg using Sierra's Civil War 2 computer game and I suspect it would be of even greater use to those who have the massive Gettysburg board game. However, from the Union perspective I have discovered that once Pickett's Charge has been broken, you can stage a counterattack by Meade in hopes of destroying Lee's Army and effectively ending the Civil War in time for the Fourth of July. After all, Grant was taking Vicksburg at the same time and there would have been nothing to stop Meade from moving on to Richmond at that point. The Order of Battle books meet their objective in providing the most detailed information ever published about the great battles of history. In addition to Gettysburg this series has also covered the French & Indian War Battle of Quebec in 1759 and the World War II German counter-offensive at the Battle of the Ardennes in 1944. My prediction would be that they will turn to the Battle of Waterloo next, but we shall see (who would have predicted they would do the Battle of Quebec?).

The Best Way to Educate Yourself About EMFs.......2000-08-06
As an author of a book on a related subject (magnetic healing), I know firsthand how challenging it is to write in a user-friendly fashion about the complex subject of electromagnetic fields and their effect on health.
B. Blake Levitt's extraordinary commitment of time and effort has resulted in a work that makes this complex subject easy to understand. Not only has she succeeded in explaining the untoward health effects of EMFs, but she also gives her readers a look into the complex political and commercial forces that have led to our current state of affairs.
Faced with the potential of a cell phone tower being placed directly overhead in my high-rise apartment building, I used Ms. Levitt's book as a study guide and subsequently consulted her for additional background information. I have no doubt that this information was key in holding off the installation of the tower.
This book is a "must read" for anyone concerned about EMFs -- and everyone should be!
Technical information made comprehensible.......2000-07-24
I am a research scientist with a background in psychosocial epidemiology who became interested in the impact of electromagnetic waves on physical, mental and emotional health when I was confronted with applications to construct telecommunications towers in our newly adopted home town. My ideas and information from physics courses were both rusty and dated. Moreover, in postgraduate work I had learned enough about environmental impacts on fetal and child development, neurological functioning, and sleep cycle disruption to be concerned. I wanted to efficiently come up to speed on theories about the waves' effects and peer-reviewed data that tested those theories. Ms. Levitt's book provided an extremely comprehensible and yet responsible orientation to the mechanisms by which electromagnetic waves operate, the research on their impact that was available as of its writing, and the political and economic influences of industry and governmental forces. PLEASE have her update it with the inclusion of the research of the last few years. Solid research findings are supporting her arguments at an escalating rate and they deserve to be disseminated. The public health hazards of unmonitored electromagnetic waves (especially in the rapidly proliferating rf frequencies) are real and an educated public is our best protection against their potential damage.
Empowering insights about EMFs and health.......2000-07-07
B. Blake Levitt makes the scientific and medical aspects of electromagnetic fields easily accessible to those of us who are not scientists or physicians. Most fascinating was her insightful chapter "What Your Doctor Doesn't Know and Why." She also traces persuasive evidence of links between EMFs and 20th century ailments such as chronic fatigue syndrome, Alzheimer's Disease, and cancer. ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS distills a vast amount of research alerting us to health dangers. It also offers specific suggestions to reduce the impact of EMFs in our homes, workplaces and communities. Our family has become better-informed consumers by relying on this book. Thank you Ms. Levitt for empowering your readers to gain control over an issue with increasing repercussions in all our lives.
