Book Description
The gods and goddesses of ancient Greece and Rome have long been popular subjects in Western art, and references to them continue to appear today in art, literature, and films.
This handy, portable reference book includes individual entries on more than forty of the most frequently represented gods and goddesses, as well as related mythical creatures, such as Fates and Furies, and lesser-known gods from outlying areas of the Greco-Roman world. Woff concisely presents the
defining exploits and attributes of these colorful characters and illustrates their stories with a variety of art works--including ancient vases, paintings, sculpture, terra-cottas, and coins--that dramatically depict their lives. Because the ancient Romans adopted many of the Greek gods under
different names--for instance, the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite, became the Roman goddess Venus--the author helpfully gives the Roman names and attributes of the gods along with their Greek equivalents.
An alphabetical table of contents is included to help readers easily locate a particular god or goddess in the book. For ages 12 and up.

Yea! More pattern books!.......2006-03-01
Frances Grimble shares her meticulous vision with us once again. A great two book series full of facinating information and patterns galore. I cannot wait to clothe many a pretty lady using them. Not for the faint of heart. The patterns are period correct and I would advise an advanced skill level, or a great deal of patience. Always do a mock up. Remember these are patterns of the age. So start at the skin and work your way out to a glorious new costume.
Enjoy.
This is Volume 2.......2004-11-07
This is a great book, but you should know that it is not a second edition of Fashions of the Gilded Age, Volume 1. It is the second volume of the anthology, and a different book with all different patterns. The title is actually Fashions of the Gilded Age, Volume 2: Evening, Bridal, Sports, Outerwear, Accessories, and Dressmaking 1877-1882. It's just as good as Volume 1, none of the information is the same except the intro on how to use the patterns, and the dressmaking manual is really unique.
I heard both volumes were published but it took me awhile to find the second one on Amazon because it was mislisted. So I thought I'd warn other people.
Wow! Continued.......2004-09-29
I just reviewed Volume 1, where I said the book contains a huge selection of patterns. Volume 2 focuses on patterns for evening dresses, bridal wear, sports wear, and outer wear. The chapters on accessories and trimmings contain some needlework patterns, embroidery and so on. I figure if I don't do the handwork I'll still have learned a lot about buying appropriate materials.
I bought both volumes, but they are organized so you can use them separately. Both contain the instructions for using the book and the special rulers that allow you to draft patterns to fit you. They also both have a big glossary, a bibliography, and two indexes.
Volume 2 has something really special though--a dressmaking manual. The book says it was rewritten from numerous rare original sources that are listed in the bibliography. But it's been rewritten so it doesn't read that way; you can't tell where any source begins or ends. That makes the manual a lot easier to use. And it's so long it could have been published as a book by itself. I'm glad to have it, because I've never been able to find a comprehensive sewing manual for this period. It even has corset-making instructions (the corset patterns are in Volume 1).
Both volumes are very well edited and produced. This is not a cheap printing job.
Anyone who does Old West reenactment or Victorian teas would love these books!

A fun guide for the man who is about to become a dad. It is written by a man, for men, in easy-to-understand (i.e., small) words. The book is relatively short because as a man, the author realizes that men have better things to do than to spend their time reading a book.

"[Thomson is] one of the finest film
critics in the English language."
--philip lopate, the new york times book review
If most film critics write about movies, David Thomson creates their literary counterpart with essays that are as dazzling, haunting, and moving as the pictures they discuss. In this bravura new collection, the Esquire columnist trains his eye on Hollywood's ghosts, exploring their tendency to rise from the grave or descend from the screen to intimately haunt our lives.
Thomson conjures up Jimmy Stewart in Vertigo, Jack Nicholson in Chinatown, and Cary Grant in any of the pictures where he makes every scene look like a lucky accident. With equal aplomb, he imagines a James Dean who survived the car crash and a post-Saturday Night Fever Tony Manero. We learn the "20 Things People Like to Forget About Hollywood" (Number 3: "You Are Their Playthings, Not the Other Way Around"). And on every page of Beneath Mulholland, we are educated, entertained, and enlarged by a book as savvy and incisive as any Hollywood reportage and as lyrical as the best fiction.
"Not just...one of our sharpest
writers-on-film, but...one of our
wisest and best writers, period."

A Fun Financial Must Read for Twenty-Somethings & College Grads.......2007-06-23
I've read several books on personal finances that were supposedly for 20 year olds and they were all a bore. Those books either were for 40 year olds or never progressed beyond "How to write a check". But, Peter Bielagus' book is just right.
He addresses all the concerns of a twenty year old and beyond with great advice and humor. Peter shows you how to budget without feeling restricted and frustrated. Getting Loaded explains the stock market in laymen's terms which makes you feel comfortable investing your money. All in all, Getting Loaded is a great book to help you set up your financial future and learn how to get your money to work for you.
College graduates should definitely pick up this book and it's also a great graduation gift. I highly recommend this book, it's a great read!
Get Ready. Get Set. Get Rich*.......2007-04-26
As Peter Bielgaus annunciates, "Make a Million...While you're still young enough to enjoy it. "Getting Loaded" is a sure read that can help you become a millionaire after smart investments and good savings. Bielagus uses step by step examples and explainations that make the hardest economic concepts easy to interpret and learn. "He shows how you can use your youth to your advantage--and take control of your finances while time is on your side." Specifically, Bielagus thoroughly introduces the stock market and how to invest with control and risk in mind and still get a great reward towards the future. Initially, he gives a broad overview of how to's within the stock market and then procedes to explain how to take as much advantage of the stock market as possible.
Awesome book, awesome author, awesome advice!!!.......2007-03-04
Ten stars! I wish I bought this book when I was in my 20s, but its not too late at any age. Each of the 50 strategies is a gem, and a few are geared towards middle aged and older folks, the rest I can pass on to my kids (when i have them). It's the best $12 I've ever invested! Here's a quote from the book that I totally agree with: "[this book] is by no means a stairway to heaven, but it is a rope ladder. Keep climbing, you'll get there" (referring to having a healthy financial life). Plus I love his writing style. What good is a book on finances if it'll put you to sleep? On the contrary, it was VERY hard to put this book down. this book goes on my very short list of "must read" books. you can't afford not to.
Funny Money....a book about finances that won't put you to sleep.......2006-03-10
I am a 19 year old high school graduate. I was given a copy from my boss, a commercial realtor. I have to admit that when I read the cover, I laughed inside. I'm 19 like I care about money markets, stocks, bonds, IRA's, and 401k's. All this is like a foreign language to someone my age...and it is a language few can help us decipher. Peter Bielagus is one of those few translators. He does it in a poignant and humorous manner that made it hard for me to put down. I intend to make sure that everyone I know has a copy of this hilariously and helpful guide to finances. Peter finally proves that money can be fun. Go out and get yourself a copy today it's a must have for young adults and a should have for every other age group
Informative, entertaining, and very concise.......2005-04-28
This book is wonderful for a young person looking to get on track with his/her finances. It manages to explain the mundane world of treasury bonds and retirement accounts in an witty and entertaining way while avioding jargon. After just a few chapters I was ready to fianlly open up that tax-favored 401k and stuff it with some no load index mutual funds. It's a must read for anybody who's green on investments (no pun intended.)

Book Description
David, unlike any Bible character before him, had the charisma to inspire a great nation. Yet in other ways he was a most ordinary man-often gripped by destructive passion, rocked by personal tragedy, and motivated by political gain. Yet, he is the one character the Bible describes as a "man after God's own heart." In this first volume of the "Great Lives" series Charles Swindoll shows how David proved his love for God many times over in an extraordinary life that left an enduring legacy of faith.
Customer Reviews:
WE ALL HAVE OUR LITTLE SAULS' OR SALIERI'S IN LIFE.......2007-02-23
What I do like about Chuck Swindoll's is that he brings that Old Testament to life for Born Again Christians and makes it relevant to adult lives and problems. This book on David as well as his study guide did give me much food for life when I was having non-legal problems with the government after I had applied for the Federal Civil Service in 1985. I heard on TV that Reagan had to approve in signature even applications for GS-9 position and I was on the list for considerations for such jobs when I was in grad school. I think they just wanted to teach young men like ma a lesson in life the hard way!
David had become a national hero by killing the Philistine Giant Goliath. Then the prophet Samuel had annointed David to be Israel's future king since Saul had committed an act of disobedience against him. Saul became paranoid how David become a military hero where "Saul has slain his thousands; David his ten thousands"! So, Saul in his madness set out to kill David.
What I found so some food for thought was that when David was losing heart about Saul persuing him to kill him and he had to live underground and off the land, that David decided to defect to the pagan Phillistine army-kind of like seeking Political Assylum with the Soviets or the North Koreans! When I was being persecuted on Park Street in North Toledo, I did seek assylum with several foreing nations. But nothing happened. I told myself who is "America's Philistines"-Russia, China, North Korea and Iran. I even sent them all resumes through my shortwave radio hobby. I had a big foreign address book called THE WORLD RADIO TV HANDBOOK! Plenty of people to complain to there!
Other things I liked about David was that he had a thing for the ladies; and I also like pretty girls, but never seem to make it with any of them. David had an entire Harem of seven wives. You cannot find the definition of the word "Harem" in my Bible Dictionary; so sexless and loveless is America's Christianity! He was such an opportunist that he picked up the wife Abagial from a dead enemy Nabal who denied him and his men food when they were on the run from Saul. God stuck Nabal dead with a heart attack for his stinginess. I used to say that my former father in law was liewise a hard man like Nabal-yet God did not strike him dead. And of course David was a Prophet and a Man of God. He wrote about 50 of the Old Testament Psalms, some of which prophesy of Christ;s crucifion on the cross and the coming Millennial Kingdom of God. God had taken David from tending the sheep to becoming Sheperd of Israel! David was a man after God's heart as David did what God had wanted him to do during his reign as King. I found that defining verse in Acts.
I liked the folk guitar in high school and in the Army. I read that David played the small harp, which was a forerunner of the modern folk guitar. Me and David liked music and pretty ladies. I was just thinking the other day that when I die and go to Heaven I will really like to meet this man, as though he was my friend!
Well worth the reading.......2007-01-11
Yet another great book in the series. Well worth the reading and study. I have ordered additional copies to give as gifts.
Great As A Teaching Manual!.......2006-07-27
This is a well written, thought provoking book. I am currently using it as a manual for a Bible study class. It's not one of those "deep theological" biographies, but it speaks to the layman, in a very easy-to-understand style. Recommended for study groups, or anyone, who wants to know more about the "man after God's own heart".
best of the Swindoll series?.......2006-02-24
All the books are good ... this one was great. It hit home for me.
For the most part Swindoll misses the point.......2006-02-19
We used this book for an adult Sunday School class that I taught. I was extremely disappointed by the superficial treatment of the text. I found myself using the Biblical text and other sources. For the most part Dr. Swindoll's book was a distraction rather than a help. For example, 2 Samuel 7 descibes
God's covenant with David that Christ, the True King, would be David's descendant. Swindoll uses this text as to how to react when God says no to our plans. (In this case, it is God's rejection of David as the builder the temple that Solomon eventually built) The covenant IS the point and Dr. Swindoll completely misses it.
If your looking for moralisms that you really already knew this is your book. If you want a serious study of the life of David
you would do well to look elsewhere or try something bold-- a careful reading of the Biblical text.

Mission Accomplished.......2005-09-29
I found this book to be extremely interesting and the story line to be both fascinating and engrossing. As a consequence, even though I knew what the outcome would be (the ultimate destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the end of World War II) I couldn't wait to see how things would turn out. That statement may seem a little strange for a book which in essence simply delineates the events leading to the delivery of the first atomic bomb, but this book deals with the subject in a most unusual way.
It includes much detailed information which will surely be of interest to future historians (e.g. how the Manhattan Project worked to develop the bomb while, at the same time, Paul Tibbets and his 509th Composite Group trained to deliver it), but it keeps the reader's attention riveted by the manner in which it is presented. It does this by following three parallel story lines as events unfold: 1) what the scientists working on the Manhattan Project are doing, how things are progressing, and what their problems and concerns are; 2) what Paul Tibbets and the 509th Composite Group and its personnel are doing, how their training is going, and what their problems and concerns are; and 3) what various Japanese citizens and military personnel living in Hiroshima are doing, how they feel about the war, and what they are thinking.
I'm sure this book will be a prime source for future historians and scholars, but it is also a highly readable and engrossing story which is well worth reading. I highly recommend it.
Enola Gay was The Famous War Plane to Drop the Bomb........2005-08-23
In August, 1939, shortly before the start of WWII in Europe, Albert Einstein warned FDR of the recent 'nuclear research' with the ability to make powerful bombs out of uranium, discovered by Marie Curie. He informed the President that secret work was going on in Germany on this project.
As a result of Einstein's advice, the Manhattan Project took off in October, 1942 in Los Alamos, New Mexico, and Oak Ridge, Tennessee, just a few miles from the town of Knoxville. Robert Oppenheimer whose work at the University of Chicago in splitting the atom was chosen as the director. He used the knowledge he has amassed from Enrico Fermi and Edward Teller to develop the atom bomb out of uranium and plutonium. More about this in the review about Oak Ridge, coming up.
It was the plane 'Enola Gay' which dropped the bomb on Hiroshima and the pilot reportedly went insane out of remorse for what he had been forced to do. It was in retaliation for the burning of a hotel in Japan by them full of our American POWs who were trapped and burned to death in the inferno. Truman made the decision to drop the bomb, which infuriated me no end until, just a few years, Naomi Blanco did a review for the Magazine Club about the hotel diaster. She is from Cuba. The co-authors of this book obey one edict: "get both sides" for all stories. They have written RUIN FROM THE AIR, THE DAY THE BUBBLE BURST, PONTIFF and THE DAY THE WORLD ENDED. Gordon Thomas has also written GIDEON'S SPIES, SEEDS OF FIRE and JOURNEY INTO MADNESS.
Real to Life.......2000-01-18
This book is as real to life as possible in its discription of the events from Windover to Tinian and on to History. My grandfather served under Tibits and is pictured and mentioned several times in this book. As I turned the pages I was reading what I had heard first hand for several years from my grandfather spelled out across the pages. The attention to detail and recreation of the stories, events, and emotions capture the readers attention and draw you in. The various perspectives of the events also allows the reader to understand the magnitude of the bombings and the enourmous undertakingas that transpired prior to the event.
This is a must read for those who are interested in WWII History. I will pass this book along through the generations as the most accurate account of what transpired for my Grandfather and the men who served along side him.
Feels like you rode along when they dropped the bom.......1999-08-09
I read the authors Voyage of the Damned a long time ago and really enjoyed it. So when I found this book I had expectations. And they were easily met.
The authors take you along with Col. Tibbets and the rest of his squadron - through training, hellraising and more. The book reads like a novel even if it is based on well documented facts. They also cover both sides of the story including the experiences of Hiroshima survivors.
All in all a good and enjoyable read.
Excellent. Well researched information and fast paced........1999-05-17
From the very beginning this narrative grabs your attention. It wasn't until one hour away from Hiroshima on August 6th, 1945, that Enola Gay's pilot, Paul W. Tibbets turned around and announced to his crew that they were about to drop the world's first atom bomb.
The crew was handpicked by Tibbets. Their training was so secret and compartmentalized that they didn't even discuss it among themselves. They all "knew", but they didn't "know" until they were told. Survivors of "Little Boy" were also interviewed for this story.
Another book recommend is Flight of the Enola Gay written by her pilot, Gen. Paul W. Tibbets. This is the story from his perspective. Excellent.

Book Description
Don't blame al-Qaeda. Don't blame Ashcroft. Look to yourself. Since the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the United States has been swinging from one extreme to another. At first, most citizens were so worried about being killed that they called for security at almost any cost. Then, when that cost became clear, some citizens protested that the amount was too high. From a keen Libertarian perspective, Walsh analyzes the effects of 9/11--and some Americans' childish notions of "liberty," demonstrating that Americans' ideas of liberty had been blurring for years. And he argues that these troubled times can force a clarification of what words like "liberty," "society" and "rights" truly mean.
Customer Reviews:
Broad but Shallow.......2007-02-26
The book gives a broad but shallow libertarian perspective on current events. I would have liked to have seen more historic context. On the plus side the book is well written and organized.
Rights and Responsibilities.......2005-11-04
When the Founding Fathers started the United States of America, they had a strong notion of what liberty meant. It meant freedoms and rights; but it also meant taking responsibility for your beliefs and actions. They expected every American to balance these rights and responsibilities in his heart and in his life. We've drifted such a long way from that....
This book gives you a road map for getting back to those strong notions. Walsh explains the rights that Americans should expect--and the responsibilites they should accept. He makes it really clear.
I've read lots of books about politics and society but I've never read one that puts things so well. In such a balanced way.
To me, libertarians have always seemed like a kind of wacky and extreme group. But this book isn't wacky at all.
I don't know anything about James Walsh. But why isn't he better known in mainstream political circles?
Great for insiders and outsiders to the libertarian movement.......2004-08-14
This is a great read! Mr. Walsh is spot on in his evaluations of the libertarian movement in America. If your a Libertarian,"l"ibertarian, Classical Liberal, or just an "Old School" Conservative, you will enjoy being brought up to present time to all things concerning the US liberty movement.
For those who consider themselves none of the above, it can be a very informative read as well. "Conservative" and "Liberal" are terms that simply don't apply correctly to todays current US political spectrum, learn why..read this book!
explains why Dem's and Rep's sound the same.......2004-07-19
I loved this book. It gives you a good understanding of what "libertarian" means and why so many people say they're "libertarian on some issues." I also like the way he explains that the liberal-conservative scale doesn't work any more. Lots of people say the major US parties are the same. This book explains HOW and WHY. They both believe in expanding the state, so they agree to focus on fake issues like Medicare drug coverage and gay marriage. Meanwhile BOTH SIDES supported the Patriot Act. I just wonder if any media will cover this book, because it slams both parties...and political posers like Al Franken, Dennis Miller and Bill Maher.
Excellent!.......2004-06-09
This great book explains clearly and thoroughly what "liberty" and "libertarian" really mean. A must read!
