          5 out of 5 stars Great, clean humor.......2007-05-07

          John McPherson is not widely publicized, but his humor is worthy of being such. His humor is good clean fun. Whatever he lacks in artistic skill, he makes up for with his humor. I actually think the artistic style of his characters adds a bit to the book, as they are at times, a bit akward looking. McPherson writes his book to appeal to the masses and anyone can relate to it.

          4 out of 5 stars A Little Too Close To Home.......2002-08-11

          What a great, inoffensive, pick-me-up this collection of cartoons is. John McPherson really knows how to bring a smile to your face. From the magician who really has sawed a woman in half to the classroom presentation of a meteor shower, each of the cartoons in this book will have you either laughing hysterically or nodding in agreement with it.

          A great book to have around to read on a down day.

          5 out of 5 stars The Far Side Lives.......2000-09-28

          More of John McPherson's off-beat humor. A laugh on every page. Food for the fun-loving soul.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff !!.......2005-11-30

                    I bought a BUNCH of these large print New York Times Crossword books for my Mom including this one. She was ardent about solving them and felt they helped her in maintaining her mental powers. I would have to agree on that. The large print really IS large and seemed too big to me at first but they were easier for her to savor and work on at her own pace. They also have puzzles you can subscribe to and receive through the mail. I was surprized and delighted during a visit to see that she and a friend worked on them together. They're a terrific resource for an aging parent and well worth the price for the stimulation !!

                    Customer Reviews:

                    5 out of 5 stars Great as a Daily Reader.......2006-12-15

                    This book works well as a daily reader and will have you saying, "If she, he, or they can do it, maybe I can too!" It's a great book for modeling others who have already done what you'd like to do: stop working for others and strike out on your own.

                    As the book says, 21 examples of people from various walks of life are profiled under four main sections as they engage in the H.U.N.T., or . . .

                    1. HARNESSING their inherent strengths, likes, etc.
                    2. UNDERESTIMATING obstacles (i.e., overcoming them)
                    3. NOTICING their network (tapping into their people power)
                    4. TAKING their first steps.

                    Personal interviews and exchanges led to the current retelling or highlighting of each person's story, some of whom made millions of dollars from very small beginnings, others who simply built ongoing businesses from interests and personal longings. Whether the business is an online daily advertisement/newsletter, a new line of upscale purses, a shoe franchise, a fast-food franchise, a bed and breakfast, or more, the stories are all very interesting and well-written.

                    To get picky for just a moment: I never warmed up to the phrase "Underestimating your obstacles" -- the idea was that obstacles never stopped any of these people, they overcame them and turned them into opportunities. But that's what happens when you start with HUNT as a guiding acronym (in itself, a nice memory aid). No big deal.

                    Also, I'm not sure just how "average and ordinary" these people really are. I did not do a count, but quite a few of these people were young and had marketing in their college background. Are these a requirement for success? Surely not, but I would like to have seen a bit more variety with people of all ages with little or no college who turned their lives around.

                    One danger of the book: it might make starting on your own look too easy. Sometimes you can get the impression that the majority of these people just broke away, worked hard, and were successful with not very much planning or risk assessment. Surely, that is not the intent, but it is easy to feel that way.

                    This is not a detailed "how to" book, but a general book of encouragement and modeling. As such, it is great. All the people highlighted are to be commended and also thanked for their example and willingness to be profiled.

                    To Wes Moss I have this encouragement: when you do volume two, pick even more ordinary people from a larger variety of backgrounds and ages. (Just don't take this as a criticism.)

                    5 out of 5 stars Great book to read over and over again!.......2006-08-24

                    This book was very helpful to me. It allowed me to see the different scenarios that could go wrong or right with starting a business and that ANYONE can start a business. You just have to believe in your idea and work hard to make it happen. I was totally inspired by a couple of women mentioned in the book, who continued despite the outside worlds negative remarks. I will definitely read it again and I recommend it to anyone who can't decide on whether to start, stop or continue. Continue!

                    5 out of 5 stars Loved It!.......2006-08-03

                    I bought this book out of curiousity as a fellow Tarheel, Atlantan and Apprentice fan. I am an avid reader, and this book was by far one of my favorites on the subject of starting your own business. Instead of reading about people like Warren Buffet and Donald Trump, you can read about regular people with the entrepreneurial "bug" that made it happen for themselves. I loved that Wes did not write about how he became successful, rather took the time to seek out others that share the desire to get out of corporate world and fulfill their dreams of owning a business.

                    5 out of 5 stars GR8 Read.......2006-06-30

                    You will really enjoy this book. Great stories and ideas. Makes you think.

                    5 out of 5 stars An inspirational book.......2006-03-15

                    The stories read well and held my interest like a novel. Reading this book was not a chore. The stories were inspirational. In fact, I hope to launch my own business based on an idea I got from this book. One thing I appreciated is that the book was encouraging without being filled with self-help hype. If you want inspiration and ideas, this book is for you.

                    Book Description

                    All Iain Levison really wants is a steady paycheck, cable television, and the possibility of a date on Saturday night. But after blowing $40,000 on an English degree, he can’t find the first, can’t afford the second, and can’t even imagine what woman would consent to the third. So he embarks on a time-honored American tradition: scoring a few dead-end jobs until something better comes along. The problem is, it never does.

                    A Working Stiff's Manifesto is a laugh-out-loud memoir of one man’s quest to stay afloat. From the North Carolina piedmont to the Alaskan waters, Levison’s odyssey takes him on a cross-country tour of wage labor: gofer, oil deliveryman, mover, fish cutter, restaurant manager, cable thief, each job more mind-numbing than the last. A Working Stiff's Manifesto will resonate with anyone who has ever suffered a demeaning job, worn a name badge, or felt the tyranny of the time clock.

                    3 out of 5 stars Interesting and sometimes provocative, but not hilarious.......2007-09-22

                    If you read the description of this book, you may be expecting the book to be either 1) a manifesto or 2) a hilarious description of many, many jobs, when in fact it's neither. A major percentage of the book was about his experience working on a commercial fishing boat in Alaska instead, which included some insightful and memorable incidents and passages, but wasn't exactly hilarious.

                    I am a liberal arts graduate myself, and as I struggle to figure out what I ultimately want to do with my life now, I find myself feeling dissatisfied with any of my available options (much like the author of this book). Liberal arts education promotes intellectual growth, but upon graduation most liberal arts grads discover that the business world does not value intellect so much. Business and science may have always been more useful in the marketplace than intellectual pursuits, but a college degree in liberal arts used to be at least respectable. Now most people consider it a waste of time, possibly as bad as having no degree at all.

                    This book resonated with me because it danced around these issues, particularly the realization that spending 4 years expanding your mind and exploring new ideas really doesn't prepare you for the workplace, where independent thought and new ideas often aren't welcomed. Liberal arts studies prepare you to be creative and analytical, which - let's face it - are skills that retail management or sales usually do not require. Sometimes the author frustrated me because it seemed like he was on the verge of being able to change things, only to sabotage himself in the end, but it's hard to judge since we're only getting a limited picture.

                    I think the book could have definitely benefitted from being at least 100 pages longer, because it didn't delve too deeply into any sort of analysis even though it would have lent itself well to that. And it could have been a lot more fun to read if it aimed to be a farcical look at life in the American workplace (a la the movie "Office Space"). In the end I didn't get a lot of laughs, nor did I get any ideas of what to do...I basically just felt that I wasn't as alone, which has value too.

                    4 out of 5 stars Yes, but where's the Manifesto?.......2007-07-21

                    Just in case you have been paying little attention to the real world lately (don't worry, it seems to happen to most of us), here is a book that can provide you with some basic information:

                    1 - Guess what, higher education does NOT lead to a promising career (or, as the slogan goes, "unlimited opportunity"). In fact, you can consider yourself lucky if you get a job at all.
                    2 - Working, especially in the countless menial tasks available nowadays (from moving furniture to preparing drinks at a boring cocktail party) is not fun at all - and it will hardly cover your bills.
                    3 - The people who "serve" you (whether they are filling up your gas tank or processing your delicious deep-frozen Alascan fish) don't care about your well-being at all - more often than not, they will consciously or unconsciously sabotage their work (i.e., spitting in your food and other such appealing habits).

                    Iain Levison manages to deliver these unromantic facts about work in a nonchalant and often ironic tone. So his adventures in the all too banal world of dead-end jobs are well worth reading, if only to shed any illusions one might still have about what is happening in the purportedly "richest country in the world" (something even the author remembers to mention every so often).

                    The most curious aspect of the book, however, is the word "Manifesto" in the title - when in reality the author provides no statement of his beliefs and no promises of better days to come. In short, Levison isn't really pointing a finger at guilty parties, defining new goals, calling for a revolution - all those things one would expect from a proper manifesto. He just describes what he is going through, in his efforts to achieve the "good living" he imagines he is entitled to as an American (though all it comes down to is cable TV and the typical junk food), and his frustration at not achieving even that. As a consolation, he reminds us that there are people in other countries who are doing far worse. So if you are an unemployed or underemployed American, consider yourself lucky!

                    What a contrast to the days of the big cries for emancipation of the working class, power to the people, down with wage slavery and all those nice (but, alas, empty) slogans.

                    And in the end, that is perhaps the wisdom of this little book: after all the ideologies and idealism have failed, it may finally dawn upon us that there isn't much to expect from life, after all. Unless you consider lying in bed after another tiring day of some mind-numbing activity and watching yet another episode of the fascinating fictitious world of sexy attorneys and dedicated lawyers supposedly fighting for "Law and Order" just about as up as you can get. Levison seems humble enough to take that. And good luck to him (and all of us) in his desperate struggle to get there. Venceremos!

                    5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-06-08

                    for anyone who's worked meaningless jobs before, it is nice to know someone else out there has had more than you, and also feels just as worthless.

                    4 out of 5 stars Will make any liberal arts grad feel good about what they're doing now.......2007-04-17

                    If you have read "Nickel and Dimed"Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America where the author decided to try for awhile living on minimum wage to see what it was like --- this is that story one step further, with a twist, better humor and greater reality. This is a young college grad that actually lives (and is apparently committed to) living on enough to just get by. It's an engaging read - as he takes unusual, and physically demanding jobs to make ends meet.

                    The only downside (though not that bad of one) in the story is that while he's incredibly honest about his slacker approach, he tends to blame his hand-to-mouth existence on the worthlessness of an English Degree and companies that just want to take advantage of him. The reality, as it soon becomes clear, is that he lives that way, out of choice. He'd rather have the stress of demanding physical jobs in bad conditions with no long-term commitment and where passive aggressive behaviour runs rampant - than one where he'd have to take greater responsibility for his actions. Despite the title, he never seems to get that it might be about who he is - and not what the world is doing to him.

                    Still, this book is a fun read --- and will make any liberal arts grad feel better about whatever job they have. Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America

                    feel dispossessed? fed up with struggling to survive? so are millions of others. and iain levison puts his experiences, and the experiences of a few others, into a fun book that takes serious turns, ranting on the futility of the lower class struggles.

                    every worker can relate to the sorrow and pain felt in this book.

                    I had to purchase this book as a second book for a class I had taken. This book helped cover many of the topics I had to study and this book did a better job of describing several topics relating to nationalism, imperialism history of international politics, foreign policies, international law and organization and human factors in international politics. I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to learn the basics or even get more indepth details on certain topics of international politics.

                    5 out of 5 stars An interesting book indeed.......2003-12-22

                    An interesting book indeed, written by an excellent writer who took me in a journey through history beginning with the Peloponnesian war and passing through world war one and two and the cold war after that, and ending with the new world order.

                    The book starts with the two views of the anarchic politics ( Realism & Liberalism ) and a very wise explanation for both of them, and I liked the way the writer analyzed the two world wars and their reasons and I agree with him about the inevitability part as I believe that the war wasn't inevitable but I quote him by saying "Ironically the belief that war is inevitable played a major role in causing it", and also the part about ethics and morality is very interesting and I liked what the French diplomat said when he was asked about what's moral and his answer was "what's moral is whatever is good for France", and also the part about counterfactuals was very exciting.

                    I don't agree with the writer about some points concerning the Arab-Israeli conflict but the book as a whole is a very good one.

                    I agree with the "back to the future" theory in some points as all I see now is "the strong do what they have the power to do and the weak accepts what they have to accept".

                    I'll quote him again to end my review by saying "Has global society made war socially and morally unthinkable? We have to hope so, because the next hegemonic war would probably be the last".

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book :).......2003-12-08

                    The basis for "Understanding International Conflicts: An Introduction to Theory and History" is, as the author explains in the preface, a course on international conflicts in the modern world he taught for a long time in Harvard. Nye says that the aim of the book is "to introduce students to the complexities of international politics by giving them a good grounding in the traditional realist theory before turning to liberal and constructivist approaches that became more prominent after the Cold War". I believe he excels at doing exactly that...

                    I found the book very interesting, and full of examples taken from history that made the concepts easier to grasp. Moreover, it takes into account the three levels of causation: the individual, the state and the international system. It also includes suggested reading material, that allows the reader to delve deeper in those subjects she/he finds more interesting...

                    The book is very well organized. It was a foreword, a preface, 9 chapters and an index. Each chapter deals with a main theme, and some related topics. The themes of the chapters are:

                    chapter 1:"Is there an enduring logic of conflict in world politics?";
                    chapter 2: "Origins of the great 20th century conflicts";
                    chapter 3: "Balance of power and World War I";
                    chapter 4: "The failure of collective security and World War II";
                    chapter 5: "The Cold War";
                    chapter 6: "Intervention, institutions and regional and ethnic conflicts";
                    chapter 7: "Globalization and interdependence";
                    chapter 8: "The information revolution, transnational actors, and the diffusion of power";
                    chapter 9: "A new world order?".

                    All in all, I strongly recommend this book to those interested in international relations... I think the author was successful in doing what he set out to do: he didn't want to give all the answers, he merely tried to help the readers to look for them. In his own words: "provide our students with conceptual tools that will help them shape their own answers as the future unfolds".

                    On the whole, a keeper :) Enjoy it !!!

                    5 out of 5 stars Superb, Post 9-11 Update, Excellent Adult Foundation.......2003-01-11

                    First, it is vital for prospective buyers to understand that the existing reviews are three years out of date--this is a five-star tutorial on international relations that has been most recently updated after 9-11. If I were to recommend only two books on international relations, for any adult including nominally sophisticated world travelers, this would be the first book; the second would be Shultz, Godson, & Quester's wonderful edited work, "Security Studies for the 21st Century."

                    I really want to stress the utility of this work to adults, including those like myself who earned a couple of graduate degrees in the last century (smile). I was surprised to find no mention of the author's stellar service as Chairman of the National Intelligence Council--not only has he had full access to everything that can be known by secret as well as non-secret means, but he has kept current, and this undergraduate and affordable paperback was a great way for me--despite the 400+ books I've read (most of them reviewed on Amazon.com) in the past four plus years--to come up to speed on the rigorous methodical scholarly understanding of both historical and current theories and practices in international relations. This book is worth anyone's time, no matter how experienced or educated.

                    Each chapter has a very satisfactory mix of figures, maps, chronologies, and photos--a special value is a block chart showing the causes for major wars or periods of conflict at the three levels of analysis--international system, national, and key individual personalities, and I found these quite original and helpful.

                    Excellent reference and orientation work. Took five hours to read, with annotation--this is not a mind-glazer, it's a mind-exerciser.

                    3 out of 5 stars excellent intro book to International Affairs.......1999-11-11

                    One of the few textbooks I truly enjoyed, Nye's Understanding International Conflicts was a clear, easy-to-read, and yet insightful book. Its focus is on the three levels of influence on a state's behavior: the interstate system, intrastate politics, and individual. It is one of the few entry-level IA books to discuss the effect of personality on the actions of a state. Even in my graduate-level seminars and papers, I found it to be useful.
