Kudos & Curses to Moonstone for Phantom Collection.......2006-04-30
Kudos to Moonstone: The strips are excellent and very much of the same flavor and style of the original ones by Lee Falk and thus the collecting and printing of these is most welcome.
Curses to Moonstone: The first story is printed with the second half of the story first! Then the second half follows. Clearly the result of an editor not paying attention to the dates written on each strip.
Fantastic Sunday Strip Art that Hearkens Back to the Golden Age!.......2005-07-04
I tremendously enjoyed this collection! Coming into it, I was vaguely familiar with the material. I occasionally glance at the Sunday Phantom strips online. For the last several years, the art on the Sundays has been much more dynamic and appealing than the daily counterparts (though a new artist on the dailies named Paul Ryan is bringing them up to snuff). The reason for the Sunday superiority was Graham Nolan, a very talented artist who cut his teeth on DC Comics' flagship title "Detective Comics" (drawing many memorable Batman stories) and a remarkably good post-modern sci-fi comic based on DC's Hawkman character entitled "Hawkworld".
But on to this particular book. First of all, the format is a bit unusual, but in a very good way. The dimensions are standard comic size, and by all appearances, this is a typical graphic novel. Only, the binding is on top and the book opens sideways (the cover is oriented vertically, as in a typical comic, however). This is a really ingenious way to present the material. Someone was really thinking!
The stories are fairly typical Phantom tales of jungle adventure, as the Phantom fights against the vices of mankind (that too is a good thing!). Of course, the selling point here is the art. The book DOES have Graham Nolan's name of the cover, after all!
And what art it is! It was a painful loss to the comic book industry when Nolan went over to strips (he also draws the daily Rex Morgan strip), but now he reaches a MUCH wider audience via syndication. And let me tell you, he deserves it! He brings a dynamism to these strips that has not been seen in newspaper comics for a LONG time! Years from now, Nolan will be remembered as one of the greats, if he chooses to work in this medium long enough!
HIGHEST recommendations!
Book Description
Can a woman who will follow you anywhere if you promise her a hunk of chocolate pecan pie ever change her evil ways and find happiness as a gym rat? Can this same sugar-addicted female find glory doing bicep curls and chomping down collard greens, with only the occasional breakdown over a crumb ring donut?
Till We Eat Again: Confessions of a Diet Dropout follows Judy Gruen's true adventures as she tries to lose fifteen measly pounds in time for a 20-year college reunion. And she pulls no punches, except during boxing class: Judy belly dances to the "camel," runs laps while an Army major blows his whistle at a fitness boot camp, and gets tangled in yoga positions so bizarre the paramedics need the "Jaws of Life" to get her out. She'll also try to figure out who's got the straight skinny on nutritional news, as medical researchers conclude that even drinking too much water can kill you. After months of these and other indignities, she'll earn a bookmark made of real paper for losing five pounds on Weight Watchers.
Will she meet her weight loss goal? (Hint: This book is non-fiction!) Turn each laugh-filled page and find out!
Customer Reviews:
A Diet Diary.......2005-06-01
Judy Gruen just wanted to lose fifteen pounds for a college reunion. In her journey she had to sidestep empty promises and quick fixes. Judy Gruen finally attempts Boot Camp training and when you see her picture on the back of the book, complete with flowered hat, you will know why this quite humorous.
In this book she deals with many of the questions we all ask about dieting. Does dieting actually work or is an entire lifestyle change in order?
How do you really lose weight and keep it off?
What is the chew less, move more diet?
How much water should you be drinking on a daily basis?
Can you handle gaining muscle mass/extra weight to look better?
I was pleased to read another author discussing the initial weight gain when you increase your muscle mass from exercising. This was a great hurdle for me at the start and you almost have to toss or hide your scale at the start.
If you have tried a number of diet solutions like the Apple Cider Vinegar diet, Weight Watchers or Atkins you will relate to Judy's diet frustrations. Fortunately she keeps her sense of humor and this book is her diary. Each entry explores something new she is trying and what does and doesn't work.
Some of the more hilarious (although somewhat dangerous in real-life) portions of the book include cooking experiments gone awry. I myself learned not to pour alcohol onto baked chicken in an oven and then shut the door. Because I will say this, an oven can explode in a most interesting way. Which brings me to this thought: "What was in the raspberry vinaigrette marinade?"
She tries Latin Dance, Yoga and Belly dancing. She tries Cardio-Kickboxing class, personal trainers, she tries going to chocoholic anonymous meetings. After fives months of "semi-dedicated dieting, energetic exercising and rigorous research," she makes ten conclusions and then the May 26th entry ends up being the icing on the cake of this rather humorous book.
I am only left wondering if she has discovered Leonidas Chocolates or read "Why Women Need Chocolate." Then, I can only imagine a journey she would take after reading The Metabolic Plan.

Loved it!.......2003-11-23
This is a great book that most people who have tried to diet and exercise can relate to. I had a hard time putting it down because it is a great and funny read. I could relate to alot of the things she did. You won't be disappointed in this book.
Funny!.......2003-10-29
I saw myself in allot of the different ways that Judy was tring to lose weight. I love her humor and I too love that chocolate. You must read this one!
You're gonna love this!.......2003-10-20
I am not a big "humor" reader--but combine humor with the pitfalls of food and my interest was peaked. I'm so glad it was--this book had me in hysterics and reading outloud. Judy Gruen has a way with humor that is much like Erma Bombeck. You won't be able to resist this or put it down. Definitely check this one out.
The funny side of dieting.......2003-09-04
Nothing is funnier than someone who can take real life and look at it through the lens of humor. Judy Gruen does this skillfully in her new book "Till We Eat Again: Confessions of a Diet Dropout". Judy touches a resonating chord in everyone who has ever tried to diet as you read through her diary style collection of secret thoughts, frustrations, and even occasional victories. Throughout the book you find Judy trying everything she can think of to try to drop fifteen pounds before her 20-year college reunion. Every kind of diet, every kind of exercise, anything else she can find as she works. Although her writing style is so crisp and quick-witted that anyone will find it humorous, it is really written from a woman's point of view and women are more likely to find it laugh-out-loud funny. To test my theory I handed the book to two different women and left the room. Sure enough it wasn't ten minutes before I heard snickering and the occasional laugh floating down the hallway. "Till We Eat Again" is a highly recommended book for anyone who has tried to lose weight and can relate to the hysterical things we do to ourselves in the name of losing a few pounds. Pick up a copy and have a great laugh.

Useful Category of Film Genre.......2006-08-25
The onscreen depiction of an adult male, stripped to the waist, and flogged on his bare back, is one form of violence that historically has not been objectionable, even in Disney movies, and it tends to be genre of its own. The book is a useful information source. To my knowledge, a book that catalogs the scenes, describes them, and comments on their strengths and weaknesses, is unique. Pictures would have been helpful, but as the author explains, the process of getting (and paying for) the necessary permissions would have been prohibitive.
Hits The Spot (No Pun Intended), But...........2005-04-16
As noted in the book's title and by an earlier reviewer, the work intends to highlight the 100 greatest male whipping scenes in movies, with some mention of TV work as well. It is by no means BDSM related and the work should appeal to those who find these moments of screen time memorable for reasons best known to themselves.
The author does say that the rankings are very subjective and goes to great lengths at the start of his work outlining the staging of such scenes, while also doing a great job digging up some really obscure scenes that show the extent of his research.
However, the book falls flat in some aspects, notably misspellings found in the text and also the failure to mention what must be some of the more outstanding scenes of this sort.
Titles such as 'One Eyed Jacks', various editions of 'Uncle Tom's Cabin', along with TV's 'North & South' and 'Roots' all have vivid flogging scenes that somehow escape being listed or even mentioned in passing in this book.
Still, if this subject is one of interest, the current dearth of works dealing in this topic makes this book a must have.
Lash! The Hundred Greatest Scenes/Men Being Whipped/Movies.......2005-01-13
The title tells it all. Each of the scenes, ranging from 1932's "Mask of Fu Manchu" to 2004's "Passions of Christ," is first described in detail. Then there is a commentary on the scene, discussing its strengths, weaknesses, unique qualities, etc. Movie buffs may find this mildly interesting but the book's primary audience would seem to be those who are"into" the field of physical punishment. The text won't dissapoint them -- it treats the subject seriously and is always readable -- but they'll probably regret the lack of illustrations. (Though there is a good photo on the cover of Alan Ladd being flogged in "Two Years Before the Mast," a scene which ranks 8th on the top 100 list!)If nothing else, this book is unique.

Book Description
This primer, designed for those interested in the perception of rhythm, provides readers with both an overview of recent research in the introductions to each section, and a broad selection of chapters dealing with more detailed studies. It consists of contributions by some of the most respected investigators in the fields of motor behaviour, timing control, music cognition and psychology and arose out of the 7th Workshop on Rhythm Perception and Production, held in Wassenaar in 1998.;The book begins with a discussion of more generic studies of timing and synchronisation, focusing on the two main methods of modelling timing behaviour (the modern complex dynamics approach and the older methods of analysis of covariance) and some progress is made towards an integration of these two historically conflicting approaches. It then moves on to consider rhythm perception and production in a wide variety of contexts, with a prticular focus on music and language. The individual contributions range from attempts to modelthe processes involved in tracking or synchronising to an external pulse to detailed studies of the ways in which the rhythmic complexities of real musical and linguistic behaviour (such as polyrhythmic drumming) are executed and perceived.

Great Gift Item.......2003-11-28
If you love MONOPOLY, I mean really love the game, then you should get this book. Strategy and tactics aside this is a good companion book to the game. After all, if you really love MONOPOLY and grew up with it and still play it, does anyone really have to teach you strategy? But, it sure is fun to read about all this stuff!
Ah the game of games!.......2003-11-10
Everyone knows the rules until someone actually reads them and surprise. I never notice selling buildings or property until it is too late.
We all form strategy patterns and quirks early in the game. The main strategy is not to make any mistakes and to take advantage of other's faux pas.
Well I learned early on it is a good idea to purchase a book that helps one look at what they already know, but from a different angle. This is the book. It goes into detail better than just reading the rules, and taking chance cards. The strategy and tactics comes in handy when you are up against the pros.
The book is divided into sections:
1. Monopolia Curiosa
2. Understanding the rules
3. Strategy and Tactics
4. Epilogue: How to deal with Tantrums
It can't hurt to get the opinion of Maxine Brady
Not bad.......2002-11-25
My parents got me this book when I was a kid. For the time, it was a good book, but does have some errors. Additionally, it has some relative values but they are strictly based a on a ROI (return on investment) standpoint. E.g. it evaluates property development based on the increase in rents, however this ignores some other issues such as the opportunity cost that the additional rent will impose on the other players. All in all it was good for the time, and the main other book out there is ok, but there has yet to be a very good book (in my opinion) on Monopoly strategy.

Book Description
“Tell anyone who asks that you’re half-black and half-white, just like David Hasselhoff from Knight Rider.”–Angela’s mother
“Love has no color,” insist Angela Nissel’s parents, but does it have a clue? In this candid, funny, and poignant memoir, Angela recounts growing up biracial in Philadelphia–moving back and forth between black inner-city schools and white prep schools–where her racial ambiguity and doomed attempts to blend in dog her teen years. Once in college, Angela experiments with black activism (hoping to find clarity in extremism), capitalizes on her “exotic” look at a strip club, and ends up with a major case of the blues (aka, a racial identity problem). Yet Angela is never down for the count. After moving to Los Angeles, she discovers that being multiracial is anything but simple, especially in terms of dating and romance.
By turns a comedy of errors and a moving coming-of-age chronicle, Mixed traces one woman’s unforgettable journey to self-acceptance and belonging.
Praise for Mixed
“I love Angela Nissel's writing. Reading Mixed was like getting a letter from a best friend I forgot I had. How ironic that a book written by someone who felt like no one "got" her will surely be one of those rare books everyone gets- black, white, both, neither. Hilarious, sweet, and honest, Mixed is the perfect read if you've ever felt like the one standing on the outside-- and let's face it, who hasn't? - -Jill Soloway, author of Tiny Ladies in Shiny Pants
“Nissel is humorous, poignant, and proud yet also empathetic and generous as she recounts her constant struggle to answer the perennial question persons of mixed race seem required to ask of themselves in our society–where do I fit in?.... All readers stand to learn from her account.” — Booklist
“Colorful anecdotes, marvelous dialogue and a thoughtful narrative make this memoir a delight.”–Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
"If David Sedaris was a straight biracial female, this is the book he'd write. This book is so funny I've already started telling people I helped Angela write it." -- Bill Lawrence, creator of Scrubs
"Growing up black and white, I always felt I had the best of both worlds. I feel the same way about Mixed. It's the perfect blend of hilarious comedy and sometimes tragic reality." -- Yvette Lee Bowser, creator of Living Single and executive producer of Half and Half
"Mixed is a hilarious must-read for anyone searching for the enchanting path to self-discovery. Angela Nissel's precise account of living the mixed race experience not only hit home with me, but the journey is deliciously enlightening and heart-rending at the same time. It's a journey well worth taking." --Halle Berry

Don't Worry, Be Happy.......2007-09-18
I loved this book. It was absolutely hilarious! I was cracking up out loud ... on the subway that was particularly embarrassing. Ms. Nissel definitely has a gift. She is able to find the humor in even the most serious of subject matters.
(RAW Rating: 4.5) - .......2007-02-11
Angela Nissel paints a portrait of her life, as she saw it, as a biracial child and young adult with humor, while simultaneously highlighting some tragic events of that life. MIXED: My Life In Black and White is Nissel's journey to the understanding her life.
She opens her memoir with, "Mom, how did you and Dad meet?" This is important to the author because her mother was a former Black Panther in Philadelphia and her father, was a white man originally from northern Pennsylvania. Questioning her existence and always trying to fit into the current situation, Nissel constantly found herself an outsider, whether it was in her numerous neighborhoods, public and private schools or with her father's family Her tenure at the University of Pennsylvania was also marred with feelings of not belonging. As these events unfolded Nissel found herself battling depression. The chapter "Crazy Spa Interlude" provided a comical eye opener into the Mental Health system as Nissel counts down her 72-hour hold with compelling storytelling.
The characters portrayed and the moments revealed are entertaining and filled with clipped dialogue. While the piece begins in this fashion, it quickly spirals into a depressed mode. Wanting to belong and having many questions as to her existence, Angela's mother tried to help her understand that she had worth, however outside forces intervened. MIXED: My Life In Black and White is a very revealing look into one woman's existence growing up biracial in America. It is a captivating read from beginning to end because she writes with unabashed wit and disheartening realism.

Amazing book on race and race relations.......2007-01-18
This author is extremely insightful while remaining hillariously witty through the entire book. For me- this was a page turner. Im also bi-racial and related to many of her anecdotes, challenges, and fears. I learned a lot about myself through reading this one.
Wonderful insight into the minds of us mixed folk........2007-01-18
I am so glad Ms. Nissel wrote this book. Being mixed Black and White myself, I have had similar experiences. So many people fought and cried against our very existence. Shoot, a hundred years of Jim Crow laws went into preventing it.But here we are - mixed and proud - maybe a little difficult to understand - but we're workin' on it. Not all mixed people are alike, but one by one - as we tell our stories, we are beginning to come into ourselves as members of our own group.
Angela does a great job of representing both herself and the rest of us in a responsible, balanced, respectful and humorous way. You will soooo laugh. She has a knack for comedic timing and writing - and boy can she weave a story! Her Broke Diaries book is hilarious as well. Please pick these up when you get a chance. I need to get a couple more copies myself, as all of my family members keep passing them around.
what a disappointment.......2006-10-12
What an awful book and what a letdown after hearing her interview on NPR where Angela Nissel apppeared like a humorous, open and light hearted person, none of which turned out to be true. After liking the first few chapters, it became very clear to me how race obsessed the author really is. There is a loooot more to life than the color of your skin and I found it extremely depressing that she is very biased against white folks. It is clear that she her disappointment about her white father having left her family has turned into irrational and often absurd prejudices against all white people. Her entire outlook on life is through the race lens; the author's generally high level of self absorbtion yields a potent mix that is not far from bigotry and racism.
Keep in mind that I really wanted to like this book, too bad; I hope for Angela to find a white true friend that will open her eyes to the real world.

A landmark collaboration between a thirty-year veteran of the CIA and a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist,
The Main Enemy is the dramatic inside story of the CIA-KGB spy wars, told through the actions of the men who fought them.
Based on hundreds of interviews with operatives from both sides, The Main Enemy puts us inside the heads of CIA officers as they dodge surveillance and walk into violent ambushes in Moscow. This is the story of the generation of spies who came of age in the shadow of the Cuban missile crisis and rose through the ranks to run the CIA and KGB in the last days of the Cold War. The clandestine operations they masterminded took them from the sewers of Moscow to the back streets of Baghdad, from Cairo and Havana to Prague and Berlin, but the action centers on Washington, starting in the infamous "Year of the Spy"--when, one by one, the CIA’s agents in Moscow began to be killed, up through to the very last man.
Behind the scenes with the CIA's covert operations in Afghanistan, Milt Bearden led America to victory in the secret war against the Soviets, and for the first time he reveals here what he did and whom America backed, and why. Bearden was called back to Washington after the Soviets withdrew from Afghanistan and was made chief of the Soviet/East Euro-pean Division—just in time to witness the fall of the Berlin Wall, the revolutions that swept across Eastern Europe, and the implosion of the Soviet Union.
Laced with startling revelations--about fail-safe top-secret back channels between the CIA and KGB, double and triple agents, covert operations in Berlin and Prague, and the fateful autumn of 1989--
The Main Enemy is history at its action-packed best.

Milt Bearden gives us the data dump.......2007-03-27
My introduction to Milt Bearden came from reading "Charlie Wilson's War" by George Crile. A great book by the way, I would highly recommend it.
I would recommend this book to people who are interested in Cold War history.
My only dissapointment with this book is that in the epilogue Milt doesn't approach the question of whether or not the rules have changed from when he was chief of the SE Division, and if those changes are for the better. For example, let's take "extraordinary renditions" - in the days when Milt was chief of SE Division the unwritten rule was that USA and USSR didn't kill or unduly rough up each other's spies. Now that we engage in those kinds of activities, are our CIA operatives in the DO more cautious? Are there more restrictions on their movements when they are overseas? And has the change in methods and attitudes affected our relationships with other intelligence agencies, and if so, for the better or for the worse?
A curious discrepancy.......2006-12-18
Much as I have enjoyed this fascinating book, I wish to point out a startling anachronism. Bearden makes much of the delivery of the "120 mm Spanish mortar" to the Mujahideen in 1987, and elaborates on how teams were trained in applying GPS readings to precisely deliver their ordnance beyond visual range. "It came...with a ranging system worked out by Langley...that fused the low-tech mortar with the high-tech world of satellite guidance." And "Once their exact coordinates had been calibrated, the leader of the team would feed the GPS data into a small computer, add the coordinates of the target, and then query the computer for the precise compass direction and elevation..." This procedure, GPS and all, supposedly led to devastating night attacks on the Spetsnaz battalion at Chagasaray on 28 Nov 1987 and 15 Dec 1987.
Problem: Although initial use of GPS was reported in 1990, it did not become operational until 1993. In 1987 the satellites had not been launched yet (this was during the Challenger stand-down).
We can only conclude that while the attacks and the mortars were real, the procedures and the "ranging" method used must have been invented by the authors for literary convenience. No doubt this is the ghost writer's shortcut, not Bearden's, but this does raise questions about technical accuracy throughout the volume.
Valuable insight into the climax of the Cold War.......2005-11-18
In a brief period of time between 1989 and 1991, the world changed dramatically. Several significant events transpired, each literally changing the way the world worked overnight. In The Main Enemy, Milt Bearden and James Risen provide a detailed and fascinating view into the struggle between the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Soviet security service, Komitet Gosudarstvenoj Bezopasnosti (KGB).
Anyone aware of the state of world affairs for the last half of the twentieth century would be hard pressed to believe any of the events that took place as the final decade of the century was poised to begin. Starting with the Soviet Union's withdraw from Afghanistan in 1989, we observed as one event followed another, each coming as a greater surprise than the previous. We watched the collapse of the Berlin Wall and saw the reunification of Germany shortly thereafter. Not long behind Germany's rejection of socialism, we saw revolutions in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Rumania, and elsewhere. In the latter half of 1991, we watched a failed coup in the Soviet Union, and as that year drew to a close, the Soviet hammer and sickle was replaced with the Russian tricolor flag over Moscow.
These were not events that took place on their own. These were the highly visible climax of an ongoing struggle between the proponents of the Soviet Revolutskyj Mir ("World Revolution") and their counterparts in the West -- including Britain's MI6 and America's CIA. Such a conclusion wasn't always assured, and there were times when CIA was baffled by the tremendous success of KGB's operations against Western agents and interests. It is during these "1985 losses" that the book opens, providing a foundation that helps the reader to see just what was happening in the world of intelligence.
Milt Bearden is a career CIA officer, having spent a lifetime in the shadows and working for America's interests. James Risen is an accomplished journalist. The collaboration -- which also includes the input and assistance of many other players from many sides in this international game of strategy and intrigue -- is an admirable success. The story is gripping, compelling, and personal. The book is well-structured and the prose makes it easy to forget that The Main Enemy isn't a novel, but a book of real history.
For those of us whose understanding of intelligence is primarily from the technical side -- most likely through Bamford's glimpses into the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) -- The Main Enemy is instructive, helping us to see the value of human intelligence (HUMINT) and its role in world affairs.
While hardly the definitive work on the operations of CIA, The Main Enemy provides valuable insight into the climax of the Cold War. Hopefully its accessible style will help to open this important chapter of history to a wide audience -- not just spy buffs.
Great Read.......2004-07-04
For those of us who were a bit younger at the end of the Cold War and were more interested in girls and cars than politics, this is a great read about the spy games that went on between the CIA & KGB, both directly (eg. in Washington or Moscow) or indirectly (Afghanistan) and about the political changes that happened at the end of the 80's and early 90's. I have read a lot of Tom Clancy's novels, and this one has them beat for intrigue and insight. Anyone who enjoys books told from a truly inside perspective will love this one.
I LOVE SPY BOOKS.......2004-05-04
This is another terrific spy book that is worth reading. Was completeley drawn in by this one !!! Another Cold War era book I would recommend is the one by Benjamin Weiser titled " A Secret Life" about a Polish Colonel ( Ryszard Kuklinski ) on the Polish General Staff who passed on some 40,000 Warsaw Pact and Soviet documents to the CIA from 1972 to 1981.

Book Description
In recent years knowledge of nova phenomena has grown significantly due to the advent of new observational facilities, both on the ground and in space, and considerable advances in theoretical work. This second edition has been fully updated and revised and contains new contributions covering important developments in this field, and reflecting on interesting new insights into classical novae. The book examines thermonuclear processes, the evolution of nova systems, nova atmospheres and winds, the evolution of dust and molecules in novae, nova remnants, and observations of novae in other galaxies. It includes observations across the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio to gamma rays, and discusses some of the most important outstanding problems in classical nova research. This is the only book devoted solely to the study of classical novae, and as such is an important reference for researchers actively engaged in the subject and graduate students seeking an introduction.
