5 out of 5 stars A Personal View of Walter Anderson.......2007-03-09

I have read numerous books on Walter Anderson but this by far was the best. His wife gave a personal account of his as well as their lives. It has truth as well as compassion. His art is much easier to appreciate after reading this enlightening book.

5 out of 5 stars A love story far beyond the usual.......2003-01-25

I first heard of Walter Anderson from an artist living in Mississippi when I was in high school, in 1963. She took me to the compound where Walter Anderson lived with his wife, brother and extended family. Anderson had become a recluse by this time, and I never met him. I got to see the pottery work he did and became fascinated with his art. As a sixteen-year-old, I was impressed with the colors and designs. I have aged, become an artist myself, and seen more of his work, I have come to appreciate the mystic quality, the blending of earth, sky, animals, plants, air, being and emotion into a whole expression.

That this passionate expression was tied in with madness has fascinated me in understanding the edge between creativity, altered states of consciousness and mental illness. Understanding the complex persona of a person who has collapsed his entire life into his art is the challenge here. This is the person who tied himself to a tree on an island in the path of a hurricane to stay at work, after all. The relationship of this creative genius to his family and his struggle to bring forth the body of work we gratefully have today is the story of this book. It is honestly and well told. The unstated story is that without the tolerance, understanding, even suffering of Agnes Grinstead Anderson (the artist's wife), neither the man nor his work might have survived. In a time when people are less willingly to sacrifice for each other, This woman's story looks at the complications of a real life beyond the reach of easy pop psychology solutions.

5 out of 5 stars The eyes of a child.......2000-10-03

Walter Anderson had the eyes of a child. His wonderment at the world around him, his passion for recording his love, and his driven personality -- all this makes for fascinating and inspirational and romantic reading. Anderson is being discovered as a true original -- his classical training in Europe and the Northeast is the foundation for his unusual work. I found this account to be as marvelous as the letters and life of Van Gogh. Sissy Anderson's writing is poetic and unpretentious. A classic.

5 out of 5 stars magical memories.......2000-04-05

This is a wonderful book that chronicals the life of the brilliant, yet disturbed Mississippi artist, Walter Anderson. Told by Anderson's wife, Sissy, the book tells of the passion Anderson had for the natural world around him, and the torture he endured because of this passion. The book tells of Anderson's life as a boy, and the love affair that he and Sissy shared. It chronicals the relationship he had with his children, his bouts with mental illness and depression, his long stays on Horn Island (Anderson's own personal paradise) and the discovery of the magnificent "Little Room", full of brilliant murals and paintings.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.....wonderful masterpieces of all comics.......2004-09-14

Legendary Couple is one of the most interesting story I have ever read. It contains full of characters mystery that each of them had the secrets of their own pasts. The story features many different kinds of martial arts which is unique. The Legenadry Couple is pre-sequel story which later return the story telling of another circle of warriors in Heaven Sword & Dragon Sabre. Heaven Sword & Dragon Sabre mentioned of the two famous warriors who were the owner of two famous weapons, and if you are a fans of Chinese martial arts comic, Legendary Couple is the best place to start the beginning of the story before you move on Heaven Sword & Dragon Sabre. I strongly recommend this comic as well as Heaven Sword & Dragon Sabre. Trust me. It is worth the money. I did read it myself otherwise I would not have write this review.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing version of an amazing classic!.......2004-04-28

This book is based on Louis Cha's famous novel, "Return of the Condor Heroes". It is an excellent story full of interesting characters and martial arts.

This version is well drawn and written. I highly recommend it.

Please note that this is only one of many volumes. So far the first seven have been released as of today (4/04) which covers only about 1/4 - 1/3 of the original book.

Unfortunately, there are only a few ways that an English-only speaking person can enjoy this classic story. There is an older comic style version that is available in Singapore by Asiapac books. There is also a Japanese Anime version that is being subtitled in English. Thats about it.

        Book Description

Since the explosion in low-budget filmmaking in the 1960s, the "independent" film scene has produced some of the most innovative and successful films of recent years, such as Easy Rider and The Blair Witch Project. But how independent is independent cinema today? And what are the artistic and economic concerns that separate it from Hollywood?

Contemporary American Independent Film is a comprehensive examination of the independent film scene. Exploring the uneasy relationship between independent films and the major studios, contributors trace the changing ideas and definitions of independent cinema, and the diversity of independent film practices. They consider the ways in which indie films are marketed and distributed, and how new technologies such as video, cable and the internet have offered new opportunities for filmmakers to produce and market independent films.

Turning to the work of key auteurs such as John Sayles and Haile Gerima, contributors ask whether independent filmmakers can also be stars, and consider how indie features like Boys Don't Cry and Shopping for Fangs address issues of gender, sexuality and ethnicity normally avoided by Hollywood.

            Book Description

Roulette is a percentage game, and winning occasionally is simple. The aim is to win consistently. After watching, listening, and playing all over the world, Brett Morton distilled a wealth of information—and began to understand why he had been losing so often. Each spin of the wheel is a new and usually random event. Every spin is a fight against the casino’s advantages. It was a challenge to debunk the theorists, especially those who had never played. His research and hard work proved he was right—winning consistently is possible. Morton explains the methods to use, rates many of the well-known systems, but above all brings a clear and refreshing vision to this exciting game.

By age 6, Waris Dirie was herding her family's sheep and goats, fending off hyenas and wild dogs as the family carved a path through Africa. She was just twice that age when she ran off into the vast furnace of the Somali desert to escape an arranged marriage to a much older man. Traveling for days without food and water, she made her way to Mogadishu and later to London as a servant to her uncle, the Somalian ambassador. There she wrestled with culture shock and got her first taste of the modeling life that eventually brought her into the public eye. Dirie is resilient, having survived drought, hunger, and the ritual female genital mutilation that marks a step toward womanhood among some traditional Moslems but, argue critics, steals or ruins many girls' lives. "As we traveled throughout Somalia," says Dirie, "we met families and I played with their daughters. When we visited them again, the girls were missing. No one spoke the truth about their absence or even spoke of them at all." As a special ambassador to the United Nations, Dirie has spoken out loudly on this subject and championed environmental causes, too. How much of her sometimes breathless story is gospel truth and how much embellished is hard to say. Like Dirie herself, though, the combination is intriguing, powerful, and unique. --Francesca Coltrera

                  Book Description

Waris Dirie leads a double life -- by day, she is an international supermodel and human rights ambassador for the United Nations; by night, she dreams of the simplicity of life in her native Somalia and the family she was forced to leave behind. Desert Flower, her intimate and inspiring memoir, is a must-read for anyone who has ever wondered about the beauty of African life, the chaotic existence of a supermodel, or the joys of new motherhood.

Waris was born into a traditional Somali family, desert nomads who engaged in such ancient and antiquated customs as genital mutilation and arranged marriage. At twelve, she fled an arranged marriage to an old man and traveled alone across the dangerous Somali desert to Mogadishu -- the first leg of an emotional journey that would take her to London as a house servant, around the world as a fashion model, and eventually to America, where she would find peace in motherhood and humanitarian work for the U.N.

Today, as Special Ambassador for the U.N., she travels the world speaking out against the barbaric practice of female genital mutilation, promoting women's reproductive rights, and educating people about the Africa she fled -- but still deeply loves.

Desert Flower will be published simultaneously in eleven languages throughout the world and is currently being produced as a feature film by Rocket Pictures UK.

This book was both heart wrentching and inspiring. It was a beautiful story. I would like to use this book in class. I think it should be a mandatory read for everyone. This woman has become my hero. I plan on reading all her other books as well.

                  3 out of 5 stars Still a good read.......2007-08-13

I had read an excerpt from this book years ago and when I saw that I could purchase it, I jumped at the chance. It really is a good book and I would recommend it to others to read. If you'd like an even better book, but along the same lines, I would strongly recommend Slave by Mende Nazer.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Survivor .......2007-07-12

Waris Dirie and Cathleen Miller take the reader through an awakening of one young woman - a desire for a safer life, an exciting escape, difficult journey to a new world, the pain of creating and the rewards of a new life, and still the reader is reminded of the necessity to understand that this is a true story of events taking place - right now - injustices - unspoken until this book. A read for all especially to remind women of the world that, collectively we can move forward to a safer life.

5 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD AND EASY READ.......2007-07-06

I really enjoyed the Desert Flower by Waris Dirie. I look forward to reading her other books!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Read this book and think about it.......2007-07-03

I might have seen Waris Dirie in many magazines over the years, advertising make-up or clothes, a stunning supermodel. Flicking through those pages, without a second thought, really shows how many times we can be fooled by appearances. There's a story beyond any of us and who would have thought that that lovely, proud African lady had such an incredible, painful one to recount.

This is a difficult book to read, not because of its prose, but for its contents, especially the ones related to the female genital circumcision. What Waris had to endure and her accomplishments in life later on, after her escape from native Somalia, are something quite amazing. She is currently an Ambassador for the UN, focusing on the fight against FGC in Africa and in the Western World.

This is a book that will often make you stare into space, trying to come to terms with the reality that Waris describes. It is not, however, written in hatred or spite. The love for her native country and for her family is there, so strong, despite everything. This book is an eye-opener and an educational one, as well as an autobiography.

Filled with little-known facts about the Alamo and Texas' fight for independence & Complete bibliography/new research & Information on the Alamo today Last stands have always fascinated us, yet this legendary struggle at the mission outside San Antonio has generated surpisingly few quality books. This new volume delves deep into the lives and experiences of the men and women of the Alamo, answering questions about the battle and the major players on both sides. How did the Mexicans view the fight? Did Davy Crockett really survive the battle, only to be excecuted afterward? Why did Sam Houston offer Santa Anna such lenient terms after the Battle of Jacinto? Mary Deborah Petite is editor of "May I Quote You General Longstreet?" and a longtime student of the Alamo and the Texas Revolution. She lives in San Jose, California.

5 out of 5 stars Where was this book when I needed it ??????????????.......1999-07-22

When studying in school and trying to remember dates, names and events to receive a decent grade on History Tests, this would have been the ideal book for me. It's all here compiled in a readiable story form that brings the characters and dates and ordeals that all went through in a fashion that makes it very interesting and all too true. Your heart can't help but go out to all that were connected in this important part of American History, the good with the bad. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is just interested in wanting to read about the Alamo to those who want to know the actual facts. Kudos to the Author.

5 out of 5 stars At last! The truth about the Alamo!.......1999-07-10

This work by Mary Deborah Petite provides very clear answers to one of the most myth filled stories of Western America. It does not cause disappointment for the reader, but by providing a clear look at the facts actually enhances the story and the sacrifice of the willing and determined participants. It is concise, full of information, and a real pleasure to read. This reader is looking forward to future works by Ms Petite.

5 out of 5 stars Concise, informative, and entertaining.......1999-04-15

I had the good fortune to hear Ms. Petite give a lecture on The Alamo recently and purchased a copy of her newly released book immediately afterward. I was impressed by the manner in which the book dispels many of the myths surrounding that battle and the Texas Revolution, replacing them with the facts which are as interesting, if not more so. Most of the facts and some of the myths were entirely new to me.

Many of the subjects dealt with are very moving and lose none of their passion in the telling: Travis letters of determination to stand and die and calls for aid; the story of Juan Seguin, a Mexican, but no less a true fighter for Texas independence fighting along side men like Travis, Bowie and Crockett; the horrible massacres of men on both sides. I also found a lighter side to the book, including references to the famous "Yellow Rose of Texas," and some well known participants' fondness for opium and for women.

The format of the book is well suited for its apparent purposes: to enlighten and entertain. The facts and the legends selected appear to have been choosen with the utmost care, including some of the latest research. The author has managed to pair down what must have been a vast amount of material and include those facts most valuable to telling the story, and those most enjoyable to read.

                    Book Description

Can one explain the power of global capitalism without attributing to capital a logic and coherence it does not have? Can one account for the powers of techno-science in terms that do not merely reproduce its own understanding of the world?
Rule of Experts examines these questions through a series of interrelated essays focused on Egypt in the twentieth century. These explore the way malaria, sugar cane, war, and nationalism interacted to produce the techno-politics of the modern Egyptian state; the forms of debt, discipline, and violence that founded the institution of private property; the methods of measurement, circulation, and exchange that produced the novel idea of a national "economy," yet made its accurate representation impossible; the stereotypes and plagiarisms that created the scholarly image of the Egyptian peasant; and the interaction of social logics, horticultural imperatives, powers of desire, and political forces that turned programs of economic reform in unanticipated directions.
Mitchell is a widely known political theorist and one of the most innovative writers on the Middle East. He provides a rich examination of the forms of reason, power, and expertise that characterize contemporary politics. Together, these intellectually provocative essays will challenge a broad spectrum of readers to think harder, more critically, and more politically about history, power, and theory.

5 out of 5 stars Mitchell continues to innovate.......2004-03-23

Timothy Mitchell writes consistently on the Middle East in ways that challenge the presupposition of field. This book is a collection and revision of many studies previously published, but they are integrated into a whole to provide insights into new ways to consider. The conclusions thereof are wide-ranging, highlighting the falsification and fallacies of behind the reasoned application of universalized logics capital and techno-politics to Egyptian particularities.

Mitchell's most powerful and provocative insights occur in his essays on the history of peasant politics in instances of malaria epidemics, colonial agricultural policies, and violence and the establishment of private property and land 'reforms'. This work likely can bring its insights to bear are on any research currently being done on the Middle East.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and envigorating.......2003-07-27

Mitchell's "Colonising Egypt" transformed my experience as a student in Egypt, so I was looking forward to this work from one of the best minds in in Middle East Studies. "Rule of Experts: Egypt, Techno-Politics, Modernity" does not disappoint. Mitchell's work is self-reflective, de-orientalized, thought-provoking scholarship. Mitchell not only connects contemporary political and postmodern theory to his Egyptian primary sources, but he extends theory in new directions and unique interdisiplinary ways. Mitchell empowers the reader to think critically about the negative influences of power and hegemonic discourse on policy and scholarship to create distorted representations and self-fulfilling, self-replicating prophecies. We need more writers like Mitchell to question and challenge the current theory and expertise that has so much currency and momentum in the echo chambers of the Washington Consensus.

The essays cover a wide range of 20th-century topics from malaria to mapmaking, from the manipulated image of the peasant to techno-political nonsense in current development praxis. I have long believed that developmental applications of modern economic theory are very much a "faith-based" process, and Mitchell has put these thoughts in engaging prose. In addition, I was particularly impressed by the chapter on violence, which helped me frame my own thinking on violence, for example, in Syria, Algeria, or Tunisia, places where not so hidden violence functions as an instrument of power and social control. Mitchell writes eloquently on issues that have troubled most of those who work or live or travel in the developing world and who have not found the right language to express their reservations about the descriptive and prescriptive power of current scholarship and techno-political expertise.

This is a great book to introduce children to these wonderful crestures. The illustrations are beautiful and very, very detailed. The text is very informal, interesting and readable. I like using this one in introduction lectures. The book leaves plenty of room for open discussion and truely gives the children incentive to learn more. As a matter of fact. this is not a bad book to introduce adults to owls along with the young one. Highly recommend this one.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to owls.......2005-09-18

Owls: Whoo are they? is a very good introductory book for young children on the fascinating subject of owls. The book covers all aspects of owl behaviour and discusses its various unique characteristics. It also touches on the owl in mythology and its conservation. The text is well written and introduces a number of key terms. In terms of the illustrations, I hate to say it, but I wasn't overly impressed. Overall, though, I did like this book.

I am a spotted owl biologist, and I just ran into this book at a gift shop. I bought one for myself, my nephew, my friends children,. . .etc. It is really great, not only for kids. It doesn't dumb down the science (using crepuscular and other words, with a glossary in back), and the pictures are well done.

                    It's a wonderful book!
