Interesting, but doesn't live up to the hype.......2005-09-02
This vaguely reminded me of the first 100 Bullets volume in that it was a bunch of unconnected stories about people being gifted with something they could use to take revenge/defend themselves/etc. In both cases, if it wasn't for the good reviews, I wouldn't be interested in picking up future volumes. Kirkham's artwork wasn't nearly as polished as it was on the recent Strykeforce mini. It reminded me an awful lot of the rookie pencillers doing work in the early Image days like Anthony Winn and Marat Mychaels. Gregory's narration seemed a bit heavy handed at times, but his dialogue was pretty good. So, in summation, I have no idea where this book is going, but am almost intrigued enough to pick up the next trade.
Book Description
The "New World" prior to European contact was alive with Native peoples and history, yet the perception remains that the history of the New World began on October 12, 1492. Indians and Other Misnomers attempts to rescue the present from the past by documenting the names that tribal people use to refer to themselves, many of their historical figures, and many of the place names of North America that are of Native origin. Completely cross referenced, Indians and Other Misnomers is comprised of three related elements: tribal names, personal names of tribal members, and place names of native origin from both the U.S. and Canada. All entries contain translations of the Native name (and/or in some cases, aliases).

From the supplier: Women's achievements and issues are often not properly recognized and are sometimes neglected. When language is analyzed through psychoanalytic theories, the phallocentric assumptions beneath linguistic slippage will surface. The names of historical institutions are manipulated to suppress information regarding women's achievements for which those institutions stand.

Customer Reviews:
Great Primer.......2007-02-16
I am new to the Customer Service arena and I found this book to be very useful. The information goes beyond the common sense approach to customer service (treat people the way you want to be treated).
It is a training manual for those who what to learn about cusomer service or to use to teach others customer service. It also includes checklists and worksheets you can use to train customer service.
It is easy to read and very interesting, meaning it wasn't written like a text book.
As I said, I am new to customer service and I found the book very helpful to me. This was my first customer service book I read, and I have since read a couple more books and they essentially say the same things as Customer Service Training 101.
I have been recommending this book to others as a good customer service primer.
Customer Satisfaction.......2005-09-16
Renee Evenson's first two books ("Customer Service 101: Basic Lessons To Be Your Best" and "Customer Service 201: Managing Your People To Be Their Best")were invaluable in training our information desk staff how to meet and greet the public. The two books contain a wealth of practical, good-sense suggestions and information about how to provide exceptional customer service.
"Customer Service Training 101" covers much of the same ground, but is presented in a format that enables a trainer to effectively and efficiently teach employees the customer care concepts necessary to "get great results." Evenson covers everything from communication and ethical issues to relationship building, difficult customer contacts, and e-commerce.
"Customer Service Training 101" is the best and most thorough publication on the subject of customer care that I've encountered to-date. The book is packed with valuable information. In each chapter, Evenson includes general information on the topic at hand, presents a brief scenario of a situation not handled well, outlines the key points covered in the chapter and explains each point in depth, step-by-step. She follows that up with a scenario where the situation is handled correctly, a summary of key points and steps, an interactive training lesson, and excellent "quick quotations for memory joggers." Tips and topics for group brainstorming sessions are also included.
The book is well-written, thorough, and easy to understand. If you've been searching for the definitive work on customer service, search no more. This is it!

Book Description
A compellingly inspirational memoir of a young woman confronting the battle of her life with hope, humor, and style.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2006-07-05
I guess I'm the only one who wasn't totally insired by her story. I did not follow her stories in Glamour, but I am a young woman who was diagnosed with cancer in her 20s. I was expected to find a lot of situations I could relate to. There were a few, but I kind of lost interest when I felt she kept going on and on about everything she did for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Compared to the cancer survivors I know in real life, she just seemed unreal. But then again, all the cancer survivors I know have been through chemo and/or radiation.
My So-Called Normal Life.......2006-03-22
A memoir about a 23 year old girl who finds out she has cancer while she works at glamour magazine. She learns to soak in life, to love those around her, and distill the important things in life from the vain and insignificant...although she still cares about her weight! She turns her tragedy into good work and action by starting to fund raise for the cancer society and with the help of glamour magazine raises 25,000+ dollars. There is another twist in the story. Completely unrelated her sister gets cancer as well, Hodgkin's lymphoma. Unlike leukemia, Hodgkin's lymphoma is curable. Leukemia is not...Erin will either need a bone marrow transplant or take this new medication for the rest of her life. They struggle with issues of mortality, fertility, and love - issues that many of us are not forced to deal with until much later. Interesting, quick read.
Much more interesting than you would guess!.......2006-01-16
I read all of Erin Zammett's columns in Glamour magazine, so when I came across this book I hesitated to read it - I didn't want to re-read everything that was in the columns. Plus, I thought, how interesting could reading about someone's cancer treatments be? Turns out, very interesting.
That's because this book is about much more than just Erin's cancer treatments. It's about her life as a whole, while going through some unusual and hard cirumstances. Ms. Zammett has a great writing style and manages to keep things interesting and fast-moving while instilling humor into the book and telling it like it is. It's obvious that she's very honest and makes no attempt to stay "PC." (She openly states that she lost weight while undergoing treatment, and still loves how she looks in pictures from that time period.)
This book is an easy, interesting read, and after finishing it you can't help but admire Erin and her family for what they've been through and feel a little bit grateful for your life as it is.
Witty and candid, a great read!.......2006-01-04
I am only halfway through this book, but I am already so impressed and cannot say enough good things about it! Erin Zammett is one of the most honest, witty writers I have seen, and her spunky attitude showcases itself all throughout the book! She is an amazing young woman with a zest for life that cannot be wiped out, not even by cancer. I strongly recommend reading this book, and I hope to see a lot more books from this talented young author!
easy to read, very informative..........2005-12-24
It was written with warmth and honesty...
I would highly recommend it for people who were diagnosed with leukemia or for the ones who weren't but still don't know how precious their lives are...
After I read this book, I really decided to make some severe changes in my life, and I started with being so grateful for every good things I have.
It should be handed out to the patients at every psycologists' offices to make the depressed ones feel better.

Book Description
The Marne was one of the most crucial battles in the history of warfare, and Georges Blond recounts the story as if it were happening before our eyes.
Book Description
"Alan Brinkley brings his magnificent skills as a writer, historian, and original thinker to bear on a fascinating story -- the transformation of New Deal liberalism from the late '(3)os to the end of World War II. No one has a finer grasp of the intellectual, social, and political currents of this transforming era than Alan Brinkley. His book is a triumph." -- Doris Kearns Goodwin
When Franklin D. Roosevelt and his Democratic party won a landslide victory in the 1936 elections, the way seemed open for the New Deal to complete the restructuring of American government it had begun in 1933. But, as Alan Brinkley makes clear, no sooner were the votes counted than the New Deal began to encounter a series of crippling political and economic problems that stalled its agenda and forced an agonizing reappraisal of the liberal ideas that had shaped it -- a reappraisal still in progress when the United States entered World War II.
The wartime experience helped complete the transformation of New Deal liberalism. It muted Washington's hostility to the corporate world and diminished liberal faith in the capacity of government to reform capitalism. But it also helped legitimize Keynesian fiscal policies, reinforce commitments to social welfare, and create broad support for "full employment" as the centerpiece of postwar liberal hopes. By the end of the war, New Deal liberalism had transformed itself and assumed its modem form -- a form that is faring much less well today than almost anyone would have imagined a generation ago.
The End of Reform is a study of ideas and of the people who shaped them: Franklin Roosevelt, Henry Wallace, Harold Ickes, Henry Morgenthau, Jesse Jones, Tommy Corcoran, Leon Henderson, Marriner Eccles, Thurman Arnold, Alvin Hansen. It chronicles a critical moment in the history of modem American politics, and it speculates that the New Deal's retreat from issues of wealth, class, and economic power has contributed to present-day liberalism's travails.
Customer Reviews:
What is American Liberalism?.......2006-01-17
Professor Brinkley attempts to answer this question in this excellent recapitulation of liberalism's development from the late 1930s to the end of World War II. That period began with the so-called "Roosevelt Recession," an unwelcome development for liberals and progressives who had, despite other differences, put their unwavering faith in the political and economic leadership of President Roosevelt.
Brinkley borrows from Ellis Hawley's The New Deal and the Problem of Monopoly and other first-rate treatments of the New Deal to show how previous splits in liberal thought were further aggravated by Roosevelt's recession. Liberals wanting statist control of the economy; liberals wanting governmental-corporate-labor "associational" agreements on production and pricing; liberals stressing anti-monopoly governmental efforts as a way to increase consumption --- all these guys fought for Roosevelt's ear as the President vacillated maddingly on the proper response. The upshot was a decision by FDR to mix anti-monopoly policy with modest Keynsian fiscal pump-priming as a hopeful solution to the recession.
Keynsianism represented the triumph in liberal thought of concerns over the consumer (governmental spending increases jobs and wages, which fattens the wallet and pocketbook) over systemic changes in capitalistic production. The latter, Professor Brinkley argues, would represent a true attempt to reform the economy. Brinkley shows that during and after World War II, with a booming economy and the defeat (or proved moral bankruptcy) of threats to our capitalistic way of life, the consumer ethic established further beachheads in liberal thought. Also, conservatism in Congress, the business community, and the American public further limited the chance for real reform and the attractiveness of capitalism as a way to stuff our refrigators and garages.
By the end of World War II all the components of liberalism more or less bought into the consumerist gambit to keep the economy booming. All that was o.k. so long as the boom continued. Mainstream liberalism, Brinkley argues, proved its inability substantively to help its constituencies, however, when economic tough times returned in the mid-1970s.
Brinkley's book represents a great critique of American liberalism from the left. He shortchanges the constraints under which Roosevelt worked in World War II -- after all, he wanted to win it -- but this is still good stuff. Oh yeah, he needed more analysis of the Supreme Court -- after all one cannot understand post World War II liberalism without grappling with the role of the federal judiciary. How did FDR and his liberal advisors contribute to that when they put "liberal" judges in the federal judiciary?
Still, buy this book if you want an understanding of how liberalism got to where it is today. Kudos Professor Brinkley.
Insightful.......2005-04-06
This book is really fundamental for understanding both the New Deal and the Liberal tradition it engendered. The book's title evokes two prior famous books; Hofstader's The Age of Reform and Lowi's End of Liberalism. Brinkley positioned this book as a bridge between Hofstader's description and analysis of the Progressive movement and Lowi's analysis of the disintegration of Liberalism. Brinkley begins by emphasizing the Progressive heritage of the New Deal. After the conservative reaction accompanying the First World War and the 20s, the election of Roosevelt and the crisis of the Depression brought Progressive influenced Democrats (some former Progressive Republicans)to power at a time when the American electorate was willing to try more radical and statist measures. The New Deal, however, was an improvisation and what evolved was a gradual diminution of Progressive skepticism about the institutions of capitalism. The interest in somehow reforming capitalism in any fundamental way gave way to an essentially meliorist framework with (by European standards at any rate) a modest social welfare system, Keynesian macroeconomic management, some regulation of important markets such as the activities of the SEC, an empahsis on civil rights in the legal and political sense, and a basic acceptance of the importance of consumerism and large corporations. This book is written unusually well and documented superbly. As commented by a prior reviewer, this book is a worthy successor to Hofstader's Age of Reform and that is high praise indeed.
Insightful Analysis of Roosevelt's Men.......2004-02-15
Brinkley successfully blends away the mask of a liberalist approach to the New Deal in this work. He chronicles in insightful detail the various alphabet soup programs and their roles in the Roosevelt administration. Yet, his main focus is the continued deintensification of liberalism in subsequent administrations and the nature of liberals and their movement from anti-big business and pro-worker to less hostile to big business as many liberals moved from one side to the other. Brinkley follows his discussion of New Deal liberalism with a discussion of the progressive degeneration of liberalism in the age of Truman and Eisenhower and subsequent efforts to foster some kind of rebirth in that time period. In sum, Brinkley's work is rather exceptional. He covers the material without tipping the reader off as to his liberal nature.
Good book, gets borning after the beginning of WW II.......2003-03-05
Too often the New Deal is portrayed as one coherent plan FDR and his administration had for getting the United States out of the depression. The End of Reform is a wonderful correction of this historical myth. Not only did FDR and his advisors have no set plan going in, much of what was accomplished reprisented compromises and backroom political dealing. Brinkley most interestingly details the indecision and political rangling in the FDR White House and with Congress after the beginning of the 1937 recession. Brinkley proves that really FDR didn't know what to do after the beginning of the recession and also after his National Industrial Recovery Act was declared unconstitutional. He also conclusively proves that much of the 1937 recession can be attributed to FDR's agreement with conservative Democrats to balance the budget which resulted in many cuts in social spending.
Also an interesting aspect not discussed in many other books concerns FDR's response to domestic issues after Pearl Harbor. After the beginning of WW II FDR all but ignored domestic issues, largely sitting silent as Congress rolled back many pre-war New Deal reforms. His discussion of the attitude of many people inside the adminsitration wanting to turn to more of a socialist economy with Federal intervention is also quite good.
With so many high school history courses and textbooks portraying the New Deal as a coherent plan that FDR and his advisors knew would bring the US out of the depression.
Lucid.......2001-04-07
From the changes in assumptions of economists to the conception of today's miltary-industrial complex, Alan Brinkley explains in this one volume clearly and concisely what so many other authors of multi-volume tomes try but never quite put their thumb on.

Book Description
This book is the result of five years' exhaustive work by the BNHS. The data, which form the core of the book, have been collected by more than 1,000 people: many hundreds of professiona and amateur ornithologists, birdwatchers, conservationists, forest officials, and others interested in
birds.
It is the most detailed publication ever produced on the subject of birds or conservation and it uncovers, analyzes and assesses all of the evidence, presenting it together with all the sources. The study has given a detailed analysis of sites that have been identified for bird conservation in India
on the basis of globally accepted criteria. Each bird area is introduced with maps, analysis, avifauna section with tables of threatened species present, and a brief description of threatened birds, which have important habitats in the relevant states.
The study shows that out of 465 important birds in India, 191 wildlife sanctuaries have been idenfitied as IBAs, 52 are national parks, 23 are tiger reserves, while 198 are not officially protected.
