I think this is the best art book I have ever seen. The author, George Everett Shaw, wrote a fascinating comparison between modern art and Antique American Iindian Art. This book has gripping photos and exellent writing. I hope to see another book from the autor soon!

I found the book to be fasinating and informative. Our family played Mancala the way the children learned to play it at the YMCA.Beside the history of the game the book taught us several other ways to play...and there is even a four player Mancala set which we recently purchased....one for us and one for the YMCA!

Seldom do you take the time to learn the history of a game.When I saw the book it was a "must have" and I'm so glad that I bought it.In this day and age we seem so busy running from place to place with little thought given to what we're doing.The book and the game have brought HOURS of family fun and entertainment into our home.Some folks who happened to have visited us while we were in the middle of a game became so intrigued with the game that while we played they read some of the book....then purchased both for Christmas gifts.

A useful book on management accounting.......2002-05-09

A concise yet very informative book for managers interested in running a business 'by the numbers'. It is written in a very practical and easy-to-understand manner. I utilize many of Tracy's ideas in my own job. The book deals not only with budgeting but with management reporting, break-even analysis, project anlysis, and accounting issues in both service and manufacturing enviroments.

If you are looking for a book to introduce you to the basics of business including the jargon behind the numbers and where all the formulas come from before you plow into a true "finance and accounting text," search for "Business Basics Bestseller 1" and add it to your consideration. If you have never had this stuff 'splained' to you before, you will like it. This is not a suggestion that you substitute it for this text, just that you check it out as well.

Great summary of John Boyd's thoughts on modern warfare. It is hard to find the wide-range of theories all in one place as is book attempts to condense. Col. Boyd's mind was a far-reaching net pulling diverse subjects together by common threads. It is difficult for any single book to do the same in so few pages but it this one comes close to the mark.

Boyd's intellectual contribution.......2006-03-20

Hammond presents a quasi-biography of John Boyd, who was the intellectual driver of the OODA loop and the author of "Patterns of Conflict." Although the book reviews Boyd's life, it is done with the intent of focusing on Boyd's intellectual contributions to US military thought and doctrine from the 1970s to 1990s. The author, despite knowing Boyd and being one of his fans, presents a balanced version of Boyd and his contribution, unlike Robert Coram's fun-to-read but biased biography. (Boyd: The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War)

An Original Thinker Not Promoted Very High.......2005-04-05

An interesting point about the life of John Boyd, like many visionaries who came before and dramatically changed the way wars are fought is that they tend to not get promoted to very high rank. In a full career John Boyd was not promoted above Colonel. This sounds an awful lot like Billy Mitchell who proved that battleships could be sunk by air power when the battleship people knew, absolutely knew, that they couldn't.

Probably the most interesting part of this book is the story of the development of the F-16 "Lightweight" fighter. This fighter which has proven to be among the very best in the world, went through a torturous birth in two phases.

First, while James Schlesinger was Secretary of Defense, the F-16 was a non-nuclear capable lightweight fighter. The second part is one week after his departure, the requirement was modified to require the ability to carry nuclear weapons. Other changes in Part II added over two tons of electronics to the basic airplane.

The resulting plane, the author contends is a very good airplane, but "it is so much less than it might have been."

A real disappointment.......2005-01-04

I decided to read this book because I had heard about Colonel John Boyd and the Lightweight Fighter Mafia (LFM) which pushed things inside the US Air Force establishment in order to develop the marvellous F-16 fighter. Unfortunately Mr Hammond's writing is monotonous, boring, and awefully repetitive. When the story is going to be really interesting regarding Boyd's flying experience, or the Energy Maneuver philosophy, or the jet fighters' characteristics, the author turns to trivial matters like Boyd's friendly relations with his colleagues, or endlessly eulogizing him for his trials, etc. The excellent work of LFM in the case of F-16 is compressed in a few pages which failed miserably to stirr my interest. The book was so pale and boring that after reading 100 pages (5 chapters) I quit.

Boyd From The Inside.......2003-12-22

Good job of documenting the work of Boyd and the environment in which much of it was done.

Less readable than BOYD , but a better insight into the man and his work. Highly recommended.

Don't Bother with this incomplete book........2003-10-07

The distribution maps and other data in this book are almost identical to what is given for free by IDFG. Ambiguity and vagueness seem to be the key theme in this book. As a nonresident of Idaho, this book does little more than frustrate me when it is used for planning an upland bird hunt to Idaho. Forget the information that they mention on valley quail hunting. From my experience, it is extremely difficult to find valley quail on public land in Idaho. I am disappointed in this incomplete book.
By the way, I don't expect the authors to give up their personal hot spots (if they have any), but some reasonable maps detailing public access areas would be great.

Not worth the money........2001-05-16

I bought this book sight unseen and I was bitterly disappointed. There is nothing in this book that you can't find out by reading the Idaho Fish and Game Upland Game pamphlet, except some listings of local resources such as sporting goods stores. It made me wonder if Retallic and Barker ever actually hunted birds in Idaho. The maps are especially disappointing, and they are typical of this entire series. They show absolutely no roads, rivers or streams by which you could pinpoint possible hunting locations. In this era of readily available digitized maps, these maps are inexcusable.

In short, any literate person could sit down with the Upland Game pamphlet and the yellow pages for Idaho and find all the information contained in this book. Don't waste your money.
