TIME Magazine raves about art-SITES.......2000-07-21
If architecture is, as they say, frozen music, this series of books should help thaw the ice. Author Sidra Stich, an art historian and curator, traveled extensively during the preparation of these works. Like all good ideas, this one is simple: assemble photos of an area's great architecture and art sites and put them in a small book suitable for travelers. Intelligent histories bring the subjects to life, particularly for those who appreciate art and architecture but aren't experts. Stich covers the territory comprehensively, finding interesting creations in unlikely places--like the M8 highway between Glasgow and Edinburgh, home to Patricia Leighton's organic sculpture Sawtooth Ramps, and a small herd of grazing sheep who keep the art mowed. The guide offers enough insight to help you immerse yourself in the artistic life of your destination. It details where you can find innovative works by new artists and guides you through more obvious destinations, such as London's new Tate Modern. The first two books in the series deal with Britain (plus Ireland) and France. Japan and Spain are next, and the publisher hopes to cover the globe.
An outstanding art site compendium and travel guide........2000-06-04
In art-SITES: Britain & Ireland, Sidra Stich provides a compendium of galleries and exhibitions of contemporary art and architecture in a unique, "travel planning friendly" handbook format. Readers will learn all about contemporary trends and ongoing artistic activities, identification of places where one can see the most innovative work by leading and emerging international talents, plus in-depth and detailed commentaries on museums, galleries, exhibition spaces, architecture, film centers, public art, sculpture parks, bookstores and festivals in British and Irish cities ranging from London, Oxford, and Cambridge, to Glasgow, Dublin, and Belfast. If you appreciate modern art and contemporary architecture, don't leave home for a trip to the British isles without your personal copy of art-SITES: Britain & Ireland.

Customer Reviews:
A great addition!.......2004-05-21
This book is filled with more information about the Hulk and the Avengers then I could find on any online source. It has a lot of new profiles for heroes and villains encountered by both the Avengers and the Hulk, which naturally leads to a few villains and heroes that have encountered other Marvel characters like Scorpion and Shocker from Spiderman. It's also got a lot of new actions, options, modifiers, and a few advantages, disadvantages, and challenges. It's as big an upgrade to the game as the guide to the X-men was if not bigger. The only thing I thought I would get that I didn't was a better description of Asguard and other magical realms. Oh well, aside from that, it's a great upgrade.
If you're interested in the Avengers, find the old TSR books.......2004-03-29
Once again the people in charge of Marvel roleplaying books have made a blunder. Their inability to even give the complete Avengers roster shocked me! I intended to buy this book til I thumbed through it, and couldn't find updated stats for Hank Pym. If you're at all interested in Marvel roleplaying games go find TSR's old MSH system, while a bit old and out of date both Avengers Assembled and Avengers Coast to Coast are deeper and more worthwile!
Battle Ready!.......2004-02-14
The Avengers. Earth's Mightiest Heroes. With this, the third supplement from Marvel entertainment and Q.E.D. Games, you can take on the role of many Avengers. It's got a great list of stats fols. Great supplement for the best Super Heroes RPG on the market. If you have reservations, don't... buy this game.

Product Description
Robert Young began his prolific filmmaking career while a student at Harvard University, where he majored in English literature, founded the Harvard Film Society, and, with the help of several colleagues, put together his first film (about a Boston factory worker). His reputation as a documentary filmmaker earned him a prestigious position with NBC, and he has since worked within and without the Hollywood production system for five decades. At age 80, Robert M. Young continues to be actively involved in a variety of projects as a commercially successful filmmaker and an independent artist. In this compilation of 15 essays, scholars of both English literature and film analyze the aesthetic and thematic elements of Youngs many works. Among the films examined are Nothing But a Man, Triumph of the Spirit, Cortile Cascino, ALAMBRISTA!, Short Eyes, Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, Extremities, Dominick and Eugene, Talent for the Game, Roosters, Caught, and Human Error. The book includes an extensive interview with Young that provides a retrospect of Youngs life as a director, cinematographer, writer and producer. A filmography of Youngs work and a chronology of his life are also provided.
Book Description
The Routledge Guide to Music Technology is an A to Z trade reference aimed at music students, technophiles, and audio-video-computer users. It offers brief definitions of key concepts, biographies of key figures, and discussion of the historical development of the audio world over the 20th century.
The world of music technology has exploded over the last decades, thanks to introductions of new formats (MP3, RealAudio), hardware (Apple's iPod, DVD, CD-ROM), and software (computer file sharing). Now, musicians can create their own audio files and share them with listeners all over the world. Music students (and the average music consumer) need a quick guide to this technological universe.
Book Description
For all chess-players - from beginners to grandmasters, and whatever their style of play - one thing is certain: rook endings will arise in a great many of their games. Yet it is precisely in this area of the game that many players give away hard-earned points, either through lack of knowledge or inadequate understanding. Previous books on the subject have been extremely technical and theoretical, and therefore of little use to the practical player. This one is different. John Emms provides the essential specific knowledge, and explains the key concepts, that will enable readers to find the right plan in most common types of rook ending. Rook endings are reached in roughly one in five of all chess games. This volume provides everything you need to know to play rook endings successfully. The author is a battle-hardened professional player, himself the veteran of hundreds of rook endings.
Customer Reviews:
Just one Word.......2007-09-26
If i was forced to use just one word for this book, the one and only word that comes into my mind is 'PRACTICAL'.
Use it or lose it. (My experience.).......2005-10-19
I have Fine's BCE for about 20 years, then last year I bought Muller's FCE to keep up with theory. Both of them are too heavy-duty for my class-C level, they are useful some on specific positions. I got Averbakh's Essential as the bridging stone to reach Fine's and Muller. I felt that I needed some focused book for each type of endings, so I got this one. The author said that the frequency of R ending type is about 20%. I guess he's right; therefore it's important to study this type. I have some sad stories about this type of endings.
1) I once reached a double-rook ending with pawns (my 7 vs. player A's 5) on both sides of the board. I had P-majority on both sides. Besides enjoying the advantage and waiting for my opponent to resign, I was also clueless about what to do next. I spent nearly 20 min to meditate and figure out how to progress. Finally, I started moving 3 P's on K-side to attack his 2. With my 5 minutes vs. his 30 min, we entered the blitz chess. Wisely he kept enough pieces to keep the position complicated. He won when my flag fell.
2) One day, this player A obtained a position in single Rook Ending. He got four Pawns on the K-side, his opponent (player B) had 2 on the Q-side; the Kings were on the rear of their own Pawns. So far so good. Player B had his K on second rank, while player A had his K on the back-rank! Player A kept giving useless checks and ignored advancing his un-opposed Pawns. Player B cleverly advanced his K and Pawns at every opportunity. To our horror, player B got his Pawn and R to the 7th and his K was right behind them. And we know the rest of the story.
3) Then later against player A, I again had a single R ending with my 7 vs. his 5 P's. Now I carelessly advanced my P's on the K-side without any preparation to restrict his K on the Q-side. With more active K and R, he got his P to the 7th rank first. I was forced to trade R for his new Q. We reached a new endgame with his R vs. my 2 P's. The rear P was useless. Thanks to his far advanced K in my side, his R now was forced to pin my 7th rank P or give perpetual check. I was lucky to draw this.
Above 3 personal examples show that a little knowledge in R endings could save ½ point!
In this book, after introducing basic R endings (R vs. 1 or 2 P's and then the side with P(s) having a R of his own) in chapter 1, Emms provides 2 chapters on single R endings. Both sides have the same number of P's, and then one side has the advantage of one extra P. Chapter 2 is where P's are on one side of the board; and chapter 3, on both sides. Various P-types (passed, isolated and doubled) are carefully demonstrated. The techniques to attack and defend these Ps are clearly illustrated. Chapter 4 gives an elementary introduction to double Rs endings. Some important themes on how to handle this type are given. As we know multi-volume books covering this topic and single R have been written before. The difference is this time the positions in this book have been carefully checked with modern computer programs for their accuracy.
More than half of the positions in this book are from the GM games. A quick scan through them I see that they can happen in our C-level strength. I don't know how we produce them, :-). Nonetheless, with equal strength and careful play, C-players could reach R or Rs endings with 1 or 2 P imbalance. Studying this book surely gives us some fundamental techniques to handle them reasonably.
This book is very practical. It's more helpful to us, C-players, than Nunn's book. Nunn's is good for academic research. I wish I had taken time to study it before playing the above 2 games. Well, if I play 5 games without losing in the theoretical openings or tactical middle-games, I may have 1 chance to utilize the knowledge from this book. Hopefully, my opponents don't care much for endings, especially the R-type.
Very good........2004-04-10
Funny thing happened while playing internet chess the other night. After an evenly balanced struggle I entered a simple rook and pawn ending. I was a pawn up, but because I had read Survival Guide to Rook Endings by John Emms I knew straight away that the position was dead drawn. But after a confused series of (totally uneccessary) checks from my opponent, which actually drove my king to a much better location, a drawn position became a won one. Now the point is this: many players are strong in the opening and middle phase of a chess game but much weaker in endgame play. So as average players seeking to improve we should study the endgame. This will add greatly to our playing strength and enable us to win many more games.
All very well to hand out this trite advice, but look at most endgame books! No wonder the amateur player neglects to study them. Well, here is an exception. I'm pleased to say that Emms has authored a very readable guide to rook endings. His explanations of procedure are engaging and very understandable. Rather than presenting diagram after diagram to rote learn Emms gives us the conceptual tools for correct play. Further, Survival Guide to Rook Endings covers much more material than that required for mere 'survival'. Coverage extends well beyond an introductory level - I doubt I will need another rook book (though to be fair I am only a club player). Perhaps very strong players would find this book too basic but I have seen a big practical benefits from studying the material. Each chapter is logical, interesting and rounded off with excercises to help the reader practice. Previous to reading this book I had tried to teach myself rook endings from Kere's endgame book and Euwe's one as well. Both left me cold although both are actually very good chess authors - such is the difficult nature of the subject. Emms seems to have the magic touch however. I only wish I had a copy of Dvoretsky's acclaimed endgame manual so I could compare his handling of rook material with Emm's. All in all a fine effort.
Book Title = Book Contents.......2000-05-21
Basic rook endings, rook and pawn endings (pawns on one side of the board), rook and pawn endings (pawns on both sides of the board), and double rook endings: a very focused 160 pages! Material ranges from the classic Lucena/Philidor positions, to much more complex practical rook endings. I think The Survival Guide can be profitably used both by novices for a concise introduction to rook endings and stronger players (including masters) as a comprehensive review and reinforcement. I also feel that GM Emms presents the material in an interesting, informative and well-organized manner, and maintains his emphasis on practical rook endings. Agreeing that there are other rook endings books, I still believe that you are much more likely to read, enjoy and finish The Survival Guide than most other books.
Best Introduction to Rook Endings.......2000-01-22
This book is the best practical introduction to rook endings currently available. It should be useful for players rated anywhere from 1300 to 2300, but is probably targeted at average club players like myself, with a rating of 1800. While there are other rook endings books on the market - Nunn, Korchnoi, Smyslov and Levenfish, ECE - they're all rather esoteric and removed, to varying extents, from the concerns of a practical player. Emms gives one exactly what one needs to know. If one wants to pursue the subject further, one can consult one of the aforementioned tomes.

The truth about the speaking business.......2007-05-21
A friend of mine loaned me this book and I started reading it. By the time I got to the 3rd chapter, I went ahead and ordered it of off Amazon!
No B.S., no sugar-coating it. Just the facts about how to make serious money in the speaking business. What you should do and what you should NOT do (sometime even more important).
The yin and yang of the speaking world would be Speak & Grow Rich by Dottie Walters and Money Talks by Alan Weiss. Both coming from different directions, but both equally as important.
Get it!
Concepts As Good Now as Then.......2007-04-18
Alan Weiss knows his stuff, and delivers it in an accessible and straightforward package. Never one to sugarcoat, his advice to speakers centers on marketing more than delivery. If you are looking into the business of speaking, this book is for you. If you want to become a better speaker, this book is only 'sort of' good for you. But its definitely good for your audiences.
It's Great, You'll Love It.......2007-01-14
Alan is the real deal. He tells it straight. He's really interesting (just like his talks). Read the other reviews--as they capture my experience that this is a great book for those who want to improve every facit of their professional speaking experience. If you're serious, buy the book. If you're not, re-read the other reviews again....until you 'get it'.

Great book for speakers.......2006-03-21
As a new speaker I purchased this book to add to my collection and it's one of the top books. Weiss holds no punches and just gets real. Not alot of fluff and some wonderful recommendations to continue to help me to think like a speaker. I read the book in one night. I recommend buying this book and Speak and Grow Rich by Dottie Walkters and Lilly Walters to read together. The both give excellent insight into the world of speaking.
Helpful suggestions about publicity for speaking engagements.......2006-03-19
This book had many helpful suggestions about publicity for speaking engagements. Weiss seems to have made high dollar lifestyle from speaking, and leading workshops. He comes across as arrogant and opinionated, but the book is full of good ideas of where to look for speaking engagements, and make top dollars in the business.
Customer Reviews:
Overdue for a Biography.......2007-06-20
Loved reading the history of this man - someone who has always been in the biographies of others from the 20th century, but I never knew his story. The book is well researched, but only reason I didn't give the book a 5 star review is that that the writing is rather "small-town", with lots of editorializing that really isn't necessary. Let the reader make their own inferences from the information in front of them. Asides, and exclamation points, have no place in a serious biography.
a dominican view........2007-06-08
i heard of porfirio rubirosa from my grandfather, he was born around 1919 and below to the era, he knew porfirio, the trujillos and the whole gang, i remember my grandfather talking about rubirosa several times and of course as i grew up i wanted to know more about this men who put the name of the dominican republic in the map sort of speak..the book was good but a little boring for me, nothing new, too much talk about a dominican history that i already know, little talk about his relationship with barbara and doris, not much to say, his life was good, in other words he had a great life!! he knew and hang out with the most famous and important people of his times, he had a great time and them is was over quick, what a life!
Can't Put it Down Good...........2007-02-20
Shawn Levy could write about a sack of potatos and make it interesting. I knew very little of Rubi but after reading this book I feel like went through a week by week breifing of the events of his life. Some of the details in the book are of astounding accuracy; I wonder how he did it. Bravo Bravo.
A page turner of a bio, and an interesting man.......2006-12-31
I just finished The Last Playboy on my winter vacation, I found it to be a fabulous read. The writing is clear and pretty even, although Levy does sometimes dip into gossip-like quips from time to time that aren't useful. The material appears to be well researched and presented clearly, with facts labeled as such, speculation and insights also clearly labeled. I do not know if there are any errors, but I don't think this should be taken as an authoritative bio by any means.
Few people live such thrilling lives, and Levy takes you along for the ride. You can almost sense the author's face as Rubirosa himself changes as he grows older and more depraved at times. There's a sensitivity that is found in some of the best biographies, and insights that are to be expected.
If you're looking for a good, fast read about the fabulous lifestyle of a playboy, this is one you should be reading. Someone should definitely look at making a movie about this guy and his times.
The Last Playboy: The High Life of Porfirio Rubirosa.......2006-11-04
Well researched account of the life of "Ruby." Juicy narrative of the man married to Barbara Duke and Barbara Hutton among others, (at the time considered the wealthiest women in the world), amid the ultra high society lifestyle he pursued while maintaining a "job" for the Dominican Republic as a diplomat. Scandalous, sexy, fast paced...you won't want to put this one down.
Book Description
Going Dirty is a history of negative campaigning in American politics and an examination of how candidates and political consultants have employed this often-controversial technique. The book includes case studies on notable races throughout the television era in which new negative campaign strategies were introduced, or existing tactics were refined and amplified upon.
Customer Reviews:
Exceptional Book, Well Worth Having.......2007-01-11
This is a compelling, well written guide to negative campaigning. it provides some strong underpinning theories to negative campaigning from an accute observer of campaign methodology. Very useful and well worth purchasing.
Accessible to lay readers and political scientists alike.......2007-01-06
Written by David Mark (editor-in-chief of Campaigns & Elections magazine), Going Dirty: The Art of Negative Campaigning is a no-nonsense history of negative campaigning in American politics, with especial attention paid to case studies of notable races during the modern era of television. In particular, Going Dirty notes campaign negativity has increased sharply since September 11, 2001, with commercials routinely suggesting that political opponents are irresolute in pursuing the war on terror. Going Dirty explores incidents when negative campaigning has backfired, most often due to non-credible charges or the attackers failure to correctly gauge the sentiments of the electorate, and incidents when negative campaigning has been remarkably successful, which are common enough to explain its persistence as an electoral tactic. Accessible to lay readers and political scientists alike, Going Dirty is a nonjudgmental, thorough, insider's history of an undeniably strong aspect of the American political institution, and highly recommended.
A very good and comprehensive look at negative campaigning and strategy.......2006-05-16
Going Dirty is an excellent book covering the recent history of negative campaigning in the US. The book gives an insightful and balanced look into a topic most people wish wasn't there.
Most of the book is filled with case studies of where negative ads were used, and while primarily contemporary (starting in the 1950's), it also goes back a century helping show how it all evolved. The book only considers campaigns in the US but the author does a good job of looking at campaigns across the country (and political spectrum), critiquing those who might think that any set strategy could work without taking into account the people and area.
While most of the book feels like more of a history of negative campaigning near the end it goes into more analysis. (Ironically the author's analysis starts in a chapter talking about negative campaigns that failed). Though I found the book intriguing I would have liked it to have focused more specific tactics of negative campaigns, and less of a history of them. Too much of the book just reads like a history lesson rather than a real analysis. I still had some questions floating in my head about negative campaigning (how it wears on the public, it's ebbs and flows, possibilities for the future, etc) that I wish had been answered by the book, but perhaps I'll just need to read the authors follow up work.
