Two-part comic adapted from the movie.......2007-01-07
This comic is put together using stills from the movie and dialogue boxes. The movie came first and the comic here follows it almost exactly. It reads right to left and from what would be the back of the book, because that's the Japanese format. The plot follows Ray, a mechanically talented young English boy, whose inventor father disappeared while investigating break through steam technology. Ray soon receives a mysterious package from his missing father. Others are after the package, and Ray tries to follow his father's instructions and guard the package. Part 1 follows the plot from the beginning of the movie up to where Ray is contacted by his crazed grandfather with plans of sabotage - so about half-way through. Part 2 follows through the end of the movie.
I liked the movie, and although this isn't a bad comic, I recommend the movie first because it was pretty good, and it's the original real deal. The best use of this comic is perhaps if you want to look at art from the movie (it's sci-fi from Victorian England, so it's kind of an aesthetic mechanical look), or to see how the stills from the movie were editted into frames for the comic. It has a really nice print job and reads well.

sit back, open a beer, and listen to war stories.......1999-05-19
As a police officer in a small city north of New York for the past 10 years, I have had many opprotunities to relate with NYPD Detectives. This book has the feel of a war story, with the depth of many experiences that will give a serving police officer the ability to learn more about situations that he/she may find themselves in. If you are a cop and enjoy reading books that can give you an edge on the street, and are also entertaining, this book will not disappoint you.
Just The Facts - A Must Read!.......1999-01-27
As the wife of a NYC police officer, I highly recommend this book to those who seek a true, "insider's" look at the life and work of the NYPD. With each page it becomes increasingly evident that the author lived, breathed, ate and slept the often disturbing, sometimes humorous and always chaotic lifes of New York's Finest.
Worth reading.......1997-11-30
This is a well-written and interesting book about the work, and lives, of NYPD detectives.
Boring!!!!.......1997-07-05
You've got to really like to listen to cops talk to enjoy this book. It's as if the author taped these conversations and transcribed them verbatim along with all the little verbar quirks we're all prone to make. One thing I will say though, it opens you eyes as to the way crimes are really solved. If you like mysteries, you'll be very disappointed in the reality

Hilarious!.......2004-09-13
This is one hilarious book I have ever read in my life! Previn brings all those big name Hollywood directors, producers, actors/actresses and musicians to life with funny little sweet anecdotes. Some of them are funny beyond imagination. I am not the kind of person who laughs aloud when reading or watching TV, but this one, I couldn't help cracking up.
I don't want to spoil it by telling the contents with my stale language skills. You just got to read it yourself!
At the same time you will learn about inside Hollywood in its glorious days. It's amazing how hard those guys worked, and how genius they were!
Very colorful, fun to read, and for all ages.
Ah the good ol' days........2002-07-20
I purchased this book as a young classically-trained composer who is interested in writing music for film (or, more precisely, collaborating with filmmakers), hoping to gain some insights into Andre Previn's early career and why he chose not to continue on that path after about a decade.
The book consists of many charming anecdotes about the long-gone era of the big Hollywood studios, where most of the cast and crew were under long-term contract. Many luminaries of that day are charmingly profiled, from Fred Astaire to Busby Berkeley to Billy Wilder, to prominent musicians like Heifetz, Max Steiner, Bernard Hermann and others. Several tales in the book relate
instances of Previn working with ignorant or unprofessional
superiors/leading-ladies/producers/etc. and dealing with their egos, mostly in a gently submissive manner.
Previn also takes time to talk about his days as a jazz musician, which he remembers with great fondness.
In the final chapter, Previn mentions his main reasons for leaving Hollywood. Somewhere between winning four Oscars and contributing to nearly fifty films, he no longer felt challenged. "Since leaving Hollywood, I have had the healthy and sobering experience of constantly working with music that is invariably better than any performance of it can be." He also tells a great story about visiting Jeffrey Katzenberg about a proposed "Fantasia" sequel.
Virtually nothing in this book is of any great "technical" use to budding film-composers or conductors. However, the social anectodes are many and make for a pleasant read.
this deserves a reprint.......2000-11-23
This is a most enjoyable book written for all readers-although the more you know about music, the harder you'll laugh. It recalls Previn's youthful days among the musicians in Hollywood, which includes a telling view of the movies' relationship with music. Previn himself is such a proficient musician-classical, jazz, he can write or play in any style-that his point of view is rounded, grounded, and surrounded by crazy ironies.
This isn't a long book or a hard read, making it all the more fun. It would be a fantastic gift item-if it were in print!
Witty and engrossing.......2000-09-24
In this autobiography, Andre Previn takes you on a candid and entertaining journey through his years working as composer, arranger, conductor and accompanist in the undoubted film capital of the world, Hollywood.
It is fascinating and funny all at once. The American film institution has always been admired and criticised, and Previn details some of the high and low points of being a part of it: the fact that musicians in Hollywood are a long-suffering breed at the hands of actors, producers and directors who haven't got a clue about music; the accounts of film personnel as seen at work and away from the glamour that publicly accompanies them; stories of wildly extravagant experiences that make up the off-hours and nightlife of the Hollywood populace. Previn also has plenty of musical experiences to relate: studying with Pierre Monteaux (conductor of the premiere of "The Rite of Spring"), playing Stravinsky's piano music and receiving the composer's comment afterwards, rubbing shoulders with other members of the Screen Composers Guild including William Walton, playing snooker with Schoenberg and consulting Shostakovich (via an interpreter) for information about his string quartets. We learn some remarkable things about a bygone era in cinema history, as well as a few home truths about living and working in Hollywood's incomparable atmosphere. All in all, it is a very amusing tale.
Previn reveals himself to be a great storyteller: his tone of writing is friendly and hands-on, and fans of Bill Bryson may recognise in Previn the same kind of bemused wit. For musicians, this is certainly an enjoyable account. For the casual reader, this is a good way to spend a few hours at home, on the train or in the air. My copy is much-thumbed, I can tell you...
A very entertaining read........1999-08-03
Anyone who enjoys movies, movie history, music, film music, and laughter will greatly enjoy this book.

Book Description
Wherever you are in America you see the influence of the Cape Cod sign. The incised carved letters glistening with gold leaf make a warm invitation to home or business. The decorative carved shells or scrolls reveal the carver's art. Among the most respected and talented carvers is Paul White of E. Sandwich, Massachusetts. He has received national recognition in both the carving and sign-making worlds, and has taught hundreds of students over the years. In this wonderful new book he takes the reader step-by-step through the process of carving a quarterboard, beginning with the layout of the letters and pattern, and continuing through the gilding. A complete alphabet is included so you can create your own sign. There is also a gallery to help the carver develop his or her own design.
Each step is illustrated in full color, with concise instructions that make this an invaluable book for both the novice and experienced carver.

Nice anecdotes about the success of others, but where is the meat?.......2006-06-25
Thank goodness I did not purchase this book! The library saves me again. A worthless read that did nothing to educate me in investing in probate real estate. The author focuses on anecdotal stories, mostly of success with making money off personal property--not real estate.
Basically an infomercial.......2006-06-13
I concur with everyone here. after reading this nonsense i wondered who i felt more sorry for, me for the hours of life i will never get back, or for the trees that died to publish it. I agree with the previous post, look at the death records and then work backwards. And that didnt waste your time or kill any nature.
Not worth it........2006-04-29
This book does not give solid practical advice. If you're a new investor who has never bought a house before, perhaps this would work for you. But if you've bought and fixed up a property it isn't for you. You'd be better served going to the probate court in your area and asking questions. It included lots of general anecdotes, but it makes one wonder why he wrote it if he weren't truly going to share how to do it. The actual probate advice in this book could be condensed to a 10-page pamphlet.
Don't Waste Your Money.......2006-01-21
I too had high expectations of this book. What a let down. I read alot of real estate books and this is the first time I felt cheated by the author. I thought this was a step by step book on how to purchase probate properties but I was dead wrong. Save your money, we all can't be wrong about this book...
Don't spend your money on this one!.......2005-11-18
Rarely do I write book reviews but this one was so bad that I feel obligated to let people know about it. The bottom line is that this book lacks the detail needed to really teach a person about the probate system and how to use it to successfully invest in real estate.

Perfect Demonstration Of How A Biography Should Be Written.......2007-07-18
As some of the other reviewers have pointed out, Kanigel does not dwell much on Ramanujan's mathematics. However, this is a spectacularly outstanding biography (this is not an exaggeration, believe me). Anyone who reads this book cover to cover will 'know' Ramanujan as well as they know their best friend. The many sides of this prodigy's personality - his affinity for mysticism, his need for public approbation, his gentle good nature - are all expertly transmitted. The tragedy of a life cut short at the height of its productivity will be felt keenly even by the 'toughest' of readers. Kanigel deserves high praise indeed for the masterly way he evokes time and place: Southern India and Cambridge (England) during 1900-20. If it were possible to award 6 stars, I would have done that.
A few further points: 1) Kanigel's decision to give G. H. Hardy equal importance (almost) as Ramanujan is a strength of this book, not a drawback. This decision adds much richness to the narrative. 2) Kanigel returns to one question repeatedly: What is 'genius' and where does it come from? He succeeds in getting the reader to wonder along with him. There is probably no (one) good answer, but a life such as Ramanujan's should lead one to ponder this deeply. 3) I wish that in a future edition Kanigel would include an appendix, with some of the more accessible of Ramanujan's mathematical formulae. I am sure that any one of the 'gang of three' Ramanujan specialists (George Andrews, Richard Askey, and Bruce Berndt) would help him with this if he requested. The biography is superb, as already stated, but this would be dessert for those readers who have a mathematical background.
A perfect Indian Student story.......2007-06-10
A very very good read....... Ramanujans story still has relevance even after almost a 100 years. The images of colonial Madras and England before the war are very desciptive and well researched. In all one of the best books I have ever read.
A thorough account of the man and those around him.......2007-06-10
Having just finished this, I wanted to jot down a few thoughts. I feel largely positive about the presentation. The mathematically inclined will find very little about the details of Ramanujan's work. This is much more biographical, about the man's upbringing, his life in Madras, his work with Hardy at Cambridge, and his untimely death. Kanigel presents enough of the surroundings and influences of his life (his struggle with the Indian academic establishment, the influency of his mother, his marriage to Janaki, being trapped in England for WW1) to make an epic movie. The story does pull you in, and leads you to admire the man's accomplishments in the face of daunting adversity.
What I didn't like about the book is that it talks almost as much about G.H. Hardy. Fascinating a character as he may have been, and as influential as he was in the nurturing of Ramanujan's genius, this isn't really supposed to be about him. And yet, I'd estimate a third to a half of the book is about him. I'd rather hear more about, um..., Ramanujan.
In the end, I am struck by how it would seem that Ramanujan seemed destined to be unhappy. You get a sense that he loved living in India, thrived on its culture, but felt isolated by his need to do mathematics far beyond what anyone there at the time could appreciate. In England, he could excel at math and dazzle the establishment with his brilliance, and yet the isolation from his homeland left his life incomplete somehow.
A though-provoking work, and good light reading for any mathematician.
The Stuff of Fable.......2007-05-17
The story of Ramanujan is the stuff of fable. As Hardy put it "a poor and a solitary Hindu pitting his brains against the accumulated wisdom of Europe". A man for whom paper was precious, with access only to a second rate library, with very little material resources, who rose to become one of the greatest mathematical geniuses of all time by the bodacious gifts bestowed on him by nature and that he further increased by his devotion to mathematics. A life that Michiko Kaku has described as "a bursting super nova". This enthralling book is a must read for any one who has an interest in mathematics or in the psychology of genius. When I first ran into Ramanujan in the World of Mathematics I was exalted and inspired to bring out the best in me intellectually. His life made me pursue a life of the mind and hold the truth of passion before me.
Good biography for the mathematically disinterested.......2007-05-01
Ramanujan was a mathematician in Euler's class, that is the sort of mind you see once a century. For those interested by his life in India and at Cambridge University, this book explains the ins and outs of his existence quite well, and a bit else as well.
Unfortunately those with a genuine interest in his work really will never get much further than realizing that he was incredibly gifted; perhaps his work was too complicated to describe; perhaps the author didn't want to sacrifice a good narrative to tedious equations.
I'd recommend this book to students keen to read about the life of a mathematician, but not necessarily to those trying to get a grasp of Ramanujan's legacy as a mathematician.

Product Description
In 1913, a young, unschooled Indian clerk wrote a letter to G. H. Hardy, begging that pre-eminent English mathematician's opinion on several ideas he had about numbers. Hardy, realizing the letter was the work of a genius, arranged for Srinivasa Ramanujan to come to England. Thus began one of the most remarkable collaborations ever chronicled.
With a passion for rich and evocative detail, Robert Kanigel takes us from the temples and teeming slums of Madras to the courts and chapels of Cambridge University, where the devout Hindu Ramanujan, "the Prince of Intuition," tested his brilliant theories alongside the sophisticated and eccentric Hardy, "the Apostle of Proof." In time, Ramanujan's creative intensity took its toll: he died at the age of thirty-two, but left behind a magical and inspired legacy that today is still being plumbed for its secrets.

Excellent Guide to the 1862 Maryland Campaign!.......2004-07-05
Luvaas has written an excellent book for anyone wanting to know more about the South Mountain/Harper's Ferry/Anietam Campaign of 1862.
Each chapter contains the following information:
1. Detailed driving direction for reaching the site.
2. A description of what happened at the site.
3. An account of the action by an acutal participant.
4. Map(s) of troop dispositions at the site during the campaign.
I have referred to the book during some of my several visits to the Antietam Battlefield and have thoroughly enjoyed each tour! A detailed order of battle and other pertinent information is included in the book.
The only complaint I really have is that the maps could have been more detailed and numerous. Complaint aside, I highly recommended the book as a valuable guide to the actions in September 1862.
Read and enjoy!
Book Description
Roger Owen has fully revised and updated his authoritative text to take into account the very latest developments in the Middle East. This new edition continues to explore the emergence of individual Middle Eastern states since the fall of the Ottoman Empire at the end of the First World War and the key themes that have characterized the region since then. The book continues to serve as an excellent introduction for newcomers to the modern history and politics of this fascinating region.
Customer Reviews:
A fantastic overview of the Politics of the Middle East.......2007-05-23
Although the 200-page limit places necessary limitations on what can be covered in a book such as this, this history of the modern Middle East by one of the region's foremost historians is a wonderful guide and an introduction to the region.
Owen covers a great deal in these 200 pages, and he does so concisely and lucidly. Not only does the book address the end of empire, the emergence of the states and the growth of state power, but also analyses parties, political economy, religious revival, military politics, and non-state actors.
As a person who teaches Middle East politics, I recommend this book highly.
Superficial commercial treatment of complex issues.......2006-03-30
This is a book by another "specialist" on the Middle East that would appeal to the common denominator reader. In an attempt to cover a wide scope of countries and issues and histories, Roger Owen, a well-respected authority in the subject matter, churns out a shallow text that does not even start getting to the issues at hand. It is a dull read that follows a standard template for what a professor believes should be fed to undergraduate students.
Professor Owen dwells in 280 pages on state building and political parties and movements, but lacks insight into events at the beginning of the 20th century that contradict his conclusions. I would not recommend this book for serious readers of Middle East issues or history, but it is useful for those under duress to produce a term paper at college.
Book Description
Fully revised and up-dated, this authoritative text now takes into account the considerable developments in the Middle East in the 1990's. As with the first edition, this book explores the emergence of individual Middle Eastern states since the fall of the Ottoman Empire at the end of the First World War. By exploring key topics such as the role of the military, economics and religion and the relationship of each with politics, this book remains an excellent introduction to the modern history and politics of a region that is usually portrayed as mysterious, unpredictable and violent.

Textbook treatment.......2002-11-27
This volume is your basic political-economy, textbook approach to the modern middle east. At certain points, it tries to be cutting-edge, but the bland, standard approach to the subject matter makes for a dull read. Much better is Richard & Waterbury's POLITICAL ECONOMY OF THE MIDDLE EAST, which is much larger and contains much more interesting and indepth treatment of the Middle East. For those who may find that work daunting, however, this is small work is likely to be the best replacement. It's lighter and less bogged down with facts, figures and tables.
