5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but concise--excellent overview and resource.......2007-06-06

This book's purpose is not strictly anatomical; it is an extremely concise overview of the figure in art. The perspectives include historical approaches, color, technique, demonstrations, diagrams, photos of nudes, tools, and varied media. It is an excellent resource for someone looking to cover everything quickly and is a great intro to figure drawing, and with its fast-paced approach, it gives the beginner/intermediate artist a great jumping-off point. The exercises are very helpful, the illustrations are just right, and the book covers pretty much everything. The colorful illustrations, fantastic explanations, and detailed text make this a great addition to the beginning artist's library.

1 out of 5 stars Not very useful.......1998-11-17

This book covers materials and techniques more than actual figure drawing. If you're looking for anatomical diagrams or reference look elsewhere.

      Book Description

When Lupin takes on a notorious con man, you can be sure that neither one of them intends on playing fair-and the results may be deadly! This volatile volume of Lupin III has it all: double-crossers, seductive women, death-defying escapes, hidden treasures, and, of course, exploding heads! There's something for everyone in the irrepressible lunacy of Lupin III.

4 out of 5 stars More Misogynist Wackiness.......2007-10-02

Still no sign of Goemon but Jigen plays a much larger roll in volume 2 than he did in the first. The formula created in the previous book continues although Lupin is perhaps even cheekier than before. In one story Lupin is in a race to the top of a mountain. When he inexplicably manages to beat two girls to the summit, despite being well behind, he explains his rapid ascend by saying, `I skipped a page'. The next story is even more blatant in breaking the fourth wall with Lupin giving Monkey Punch a tour of his criminal operation as the author/artist omnisciently observes from outside the comic pages.

In another story Lupin shows his softer side allowing himself to be blackmailed into committing crimes in order to protect a woman he's never even met. Of course in the end it turns out that the woman was in on the scam and Lupin disposes of both.

My only complaint in the series is the same one I had with volume one. Sometimes it is very difficult to figure out what is going in. At one point in the book Jigen ends up trying to kill Lupin. Jigen gets the drop on Lupin on the top of a construction beam when all of a sudden what looks like a tiny rocket flies at Jigen's face and then it appears like Lupin flings a tire at the back of Jigen's head. Seriously, it's impossible to discern what's going on. So Lupin grabs Jigen's gun and fires but it appears that the gun has been designed to fire in reverse and fires back into Lupin's face putting a bullet through his head. Next thing you know Inspector Zenegata is complimenting Lupin on his trickiness and the last frame has Jigen hanging from a girder in his underwear. This is an extreme example but I haven't the slightest idea what happened in this sequence.

Despite some occasional sloppiness I found volume 2 to be at least as good as volume 1 and I highly recommend it for fans of Lupin III.

      5 out of 5 stars Lupin the 3 is a 10.......2003-12-21

Lupin the 3rd is such a great anime character. This book is grat along wiht the other 7 series. It is hilarious and Lupin is a good comic.

      5 out of 5 stars A Forgotten Pleasure.......2003-11-04

Lupin has been around for a while. Today, some might not identify so well with his sexist humor and his immoral ways. But, if you can get past your modern PC world, Lupin is genius. Lupin has no soul. That is what MAKES him the best theif in the world! This manga is well written, the characters beautifully developed, and the cartooning gritty enough for his exploits. Lets face it, Lupin is the James Bond of Japanese anime. If you want crazy action, sharp wit, and other ridiculous foibels, Lupin is for you. Extra points to those who steal this book...Lupin would be proud!

1 out of 5 stars Execrable. Unlike the anime........2003-10-07

The protagonist of this first comic--the one you might remember fondly from the vastly superior anime--gleefully rapes women (who are always sultry spies or vapid bubble-heads, and who always come around to their passionate nature afterwards,) uses toilet humor without ever evoking humour, and acts without valour or wit. The themes which threatened to wear thin in the Anime at times (such as the cliche'd everpresence of the perpetually and uncomically incompetent detective) are tedious before you've even trudged half the way through the amateurish artwork and uninspired writing. If you find yourself unmoved by my words, I urge you to visit a bookstore and read a few of the pages at random. Then, if you find you actually want to endure this tripe, my copy--among others--will be available used from this page. At a dollar, you'll still be paying too much.

3 out of 5 stars Hilarious but sad too........2003-07-22

Funny yet sad at the same time. Benny Davis is now deceased from his choice of lifestyles. Yet no one can deprive him of being one of the most talented writers ever. I do not believe the church had anything to do with Benny's choice. I do know that Benny, had he lived, could have had a career in writing. This book, makes one want to go back in time and attend church with him just to relive the wonderful memories that he describes in this book. He comes from wonderful parents, who have gone on to be with the Lord.

        5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Interesting.......2003-02-11

This is one of those books that I lend out to friends, do not get back and then rebuy a year or so later when I want to give it to somebody new.

It is the story of Benny Joe, a child raised in one of the old style fire and brimstone southern U.S. Barn burning Pentacostal families. This book is less interesting as a gay auto-biography than as a snapshot of a time and style of living that hardly any of us, not raised in the midst of it, have any idea about. The thing that makes this book different from so many books written by gay men raised in strict religeous households is that Benny Joe is not bashing his religeon or his parents, in fact he loves both. This is made abundantly clear at the end of the novel.

The novel is full of hilarious observations and descriptions of daily life. The fact that he explains pentacostals tendancy towards obesity as the result of gluttony being the one sin that his church overlooked as far more minor than dancing, drinking or pre-marital sex got a laugh. His first hand accounts of faith healing and prayer circles that go on for days, yet far from being bored or unhappy, as a child he was very excited to participate since, with no TV this was a great form of entertainment. Descriptions of being frightened by a particularly large parishoner running around the church speaking in tongues, and how he could always tell how great a church service had been by how far over the womens beehive hairdo's were leaning when it was over were all told with both humor and fondness..

These are just a few snippets from a man who studied to be a pentacostal minister, told somewhere between documentary and camp.

In addition to being a such an interesting view of this lifestyle and of the individual life of Benny Joe, this book give great responses to people who use Bible quote to attack homosexuality. I almost felt sorry for the obnoxious anti-gay woman that engaged him in a conversation outside of a gay bar and tried to use Biblical passages to oppose homosexuality, this boy was a former Pentacostal minister and with one question made the woman look (and hopefully feel) like an idiot. Nobody can throw around Bible quote like a minister.

If you can find this book, pick it up, you won't regret it. If you do, lend it to a friend, they will love it. I have to say, in some odd ways this book reminded me of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" I know that sounds odd, but in that movie, although she was pointing out the humor in being Greek, you could tell it was also a partial love letter, this book was similar and if you can find it, buy two, one for you and one to loan out.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant humor, Gothic Religion.......2000-04-23

Benny Joe Davis wrote what is likely the best real-life account of Ultra-Hard Core American Protestantism, as practiced in Dallas, Texas, in the 50's and 60's. His account of a minister assuring his congregation that any woman whose head was stuck in a hair dryer when the Rapture came ... would not be able to ascend up to Heaven ... or the description of the midget Pigmy Africans, as related by the daughter of the returned missionary ... are absolutely classic. I've given away dozens of copies; would distribute more if I could find them.

Benny Joe died of AIDS in the 90's. I've wondered if he could have done a second book; we'll never know.

If you like Grizzard, Ivins, Blount, Prarie Home Companion, etc., you'll LOVE Strange Angel. The incredible real-life humor of the book is tempered at the end by Benny Joe's frustration with his Church ... but, it's written with a sincerity that will reach out and grab you.

And then there's the fellow college student (attending a snake-chunking Shiite-Fundamentalist school of questionable value just south of Dallas) forever tagged with a nickname ... the same name he wrote on a current events exam: "Who is Premier of China?" "Mousey Tongue."

        4 out of 5 stars Great book.......1998-01-11

Great book about a gay man coming to terms with his sexuality despite his fundamentalist upbringing. Poignantly humorous in parts,it reveals the hypocricy of some of those who teach and preach this philosophy. If you are gay and were or are being brought up in a strict fundamentalist setting, you must read this book. I have quite a few spare copies.

4 out of 5 stars Strange Angel-- good book.......1997-10-24

Although I was raised Southern Baptist (we thought Pentecostals were just plain wrong, mainly for speaking in tongues, which was the devil's language), I could see a lot of similarities between the two denominations. Both call for unquestioning faith in scripture, although Southern Baptists seem to be able to pick the verses they want to follow, while Pentecostals rigidly follow most (but not all) verses. Pentecostals make a lot of noise, too, while Southern Baptists tend to be more reserved-- at least at church. And, if you believe the rhetoric that both demonations push, it's impossible for one of their members to be gay-- especially one who was brought up in the church. And yet, that's what happened, in my case, as well as in the case of the author, Ben Davis. And this could serve as proof of "nature vs nurture." Try as we might, the church couldn't save us from being who we were born to be. (If religion is the only answer to "cure" gays, why are so many heterosexuals non-religious?)

"Strange Angel" is well-written, although I did find myself hurrying to turn pages-- less by being caught up in the story than by finding a few minor sections long-winded. In spite of that, it's a good look at the inner workings of the Pentecostal Church, and the hypocrisy that's rampant there, as in every denomination, as well as the lengths some gay people will go to belong, while attempting to deny the fact that they are gay and no amount of praying can change it (although they can stay celibate or enter loveless marriages, which seems to be the goal of most "Christian' denominations.

Organized religion has become a haven for anyone who seeks to prove, through twisting or abusing the words of the Bible, their own superiority. Come to think of it, American Militia groups serve the same purpose.

Check out this book. It's a lot of fun, and regardless of your stand on the church, you'll learn something, either about the church or about how tough it is to be gay and growing up in the church. Either way, you won't be disappointed.

The Quintessential II books are the Advanced Tactics series from Mongoose Publishing. Neither replacing or requiring the use of the first Quintessential series, these books explore aspects of character classes never before examined and allow players to fully recognize the potential of their characters. Featuring character paths that allow players to develop without the need for prestige classes and what options are available at epic level and beyond, these books are truly the next stage of character development. This seventh book in the series details that most mysterious class, the monk.

5 out of 5 stars Biblical Principals of Giving and Receiving.......2007-05-07

Great book if you really want to see how God blesses those who give. The bible says that when you give, God blesses you and gives you more. Those who do not believe in tithing should read this book. You will see how God blesses those who are faithfully to him.

5 out of 5 stars Open your mind and your checkbook.......2005-07-11

How many of us have looked to some miracle to cure our financial ills? I suggest that we need a book like this to help us understand our financial success now, to change into a stronger financial person.

The authors use excellent illustrations and real life stories to help us see ourselves, with the intention to change.

I highly encourage you to read this book, but more importantly, to apply this book.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Financial Direction and Sound Biblical Foundations.......2001-10-29

This book was read through in two sittings. The first read was to get a feel for what the author had to say about financial planning. The second was to see if the Biblical foundations were really there. I couldn't have been more impressed. This book is solid and sound on both fronts. Anyone looking for a nuts-and-bolts approach to getting their financial act together need not look elsewhere. This book has all you need to identify your area(s) of concern and get the information required to get your boat afloat and the wind in your sails. God's message to those willing to listen is ever-present and sound. You cannot come away from reading this book without realizing that the author is truly dedicated to helping his fellow man -- through sound financial direction with an eye focused on God's message Christians everywhere.

This is must reading for all individuals who want to develop sound financial habits. While many of us know where we want to go, this practical book guides us on the journey for financial success and provides us the Biblical basis for that journey. Regardless of your religious preference, this book will serve as a road map to achieve whatever you want if you are willing to be disciplined in your pursuit. Book Description

The frontiersmen were a remarkable breed of men. They were often rough and illiterate, sometimes brutal and vicious, often seeking an escape in the wilderness of mid-America from crimes committed back east. In the beautiful but deadly country which would one day come to be known as West Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, more often than not they left their bones to bleach beside forest paths or on the banks of the Ohio River, victims of Indians who claimed the vast virgin territory and strove to turn back the growing tide of whites. These frontiersmen are the subjects of Allan Eckert's dramatic history.

Against the background of such names as George Rogers Clark, Daniel Boone, Arthur St. Clair, Anthony Wayne, Simon Girty and William Henry Harrison, Eckert has recreated the life of one of America's most outstanding heroes, Simon Kenton. Kenton's role in opening the Northwest Territory to settlement more than rivaled that of his friend Daniel Boone. By his eighteenth birthday, Kenton had already won frontier renown as woodsman, fighter and scout. His incredible physical strength and endurance, his great dignity and innate kindness made him the ideal prototype of the frontier hero.

Yet there is another story to The Frontiersmen. It is equally the story of one of history's greatest leaders, whose misfortune was to be born to a doomed cause and a dying race. Tecumseh, the brilliant Shawnee chief, welded together by the sheer force of his intellect and charisma an incredible Indian confederacy that came desperately close to breaking the thrust of the white man's westward expansion. Like Kenton, Tecumseh was the paragon of his people's virtues, and the story of his life, in Allan Eckert's hands, reveals most profoundly the grandeur and the tragedy of the American Indian.

No less importantly, The Frontiersmen is the story of wilderness America itself, its penetration and settlement, and it is Eckert's particular grace to be able to evoke life and meaning from the raw facts of this story. In The Frontiersmen not only do we care about our long-forgotten fathers, we live again with them.

Researched for seven years, The Frontiersmen is the first in Mr. Eckert's "The Winning of America" series.

5 out of 5 stars Writing at its best.......2007-10-08

If you like compelling writing that generates a lightning bolt narrative about manifest destiny and those who were major players in this exciting but heart breaking game, this book is for you. I also recommend another thunder storm of a book: Walking the Trail, One Man's Journey Along the Cherokee Trail of Tears by Cherokee author Jerry Ellis. He was the first person in the modern world to WALK the 900 mile route of the Trail of Tears and the book was nominated for a Pulitzer and National Book Award.

                  5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put It Down.......2007-08-27

This was a great read. Once I started I couldn't put it down. I plan on reading the other 5 books by Allan Eckert. It takes you back to pure human nature and puts you in touch with yourself. You have to ask how you would respond to the situations encountered by these brave frontiersmen. I'm telling most of my friends about this book.

                  5 out of 5 stars The Frontiersmen.......2007-08-15

A very powerful and informative historical narrative of some of the personalities that shaped the settlement of this country ;from the perspective of Simon Kenton. A "must read" !

I can't decide which I like better, this book or Eckert's 'Dark and Bloody River', but they are both MUST READ's for any history fan. For even a casual reader this book will hold your attention, and provide you with a facinating insight into our nation's history.

This is a fantastic book if you love Early American Historical Narratives which I love. I first read this book about twenty years ago, and recently read it again. The author's foot notes and reference material allow you to really dive into the time period of the book!

                                      Book Description

Globalization's threat to artists and intellectuals, and how they can rebut it. Pierre Bourdieu, described by The Nation as "worthy of the militant mantle of Sartre and Foucault," here continues the themes advanced so successfully in his previous book Acts of Resistance. Firing Back is an eloquent dissection of globalization's intellectual and cultural role throughout the world, and a discussion of the ways in which effective opposition to it can be mounted. Bourdieu examines Europe's potential as a counterweight to America's globalizing policy and discusses how intellectuals and those working in the cultural sphere can create meaningful alternatives. He also raises challenging questions about the depoliticization of the academic world, arguing that scholars can no longer maintain that their research is objective or value-free.

In a preface written for this edition, Bourdieu directly addresses American readers about the role they can play in the burgeoning anti-globalization movement.

5 out of 5 stars A clear challenge to academic objectivity.......2004-10-10

Academic objectivity is a great excuse to avoid taking sides. PB presents a clear challenge to that excuse with this argument. Compare this with the argument from "Empire" and "Multitudes" (Hardt and Negri). A critique of their hypothesis runs along PB's approach and it does not seem to resolve in my mind. Both are difficult and rather abstract. I would normally retreat to narrative analysis and seek escape and avoid taking sides! PB presents the inescapable dilemma. This calls for a rereading of "Pascalian Meditations".

Short but very thought provoking as always.

It is very technical, but I think for research in modern astronomy it works very well. Good book to just open to any page and get some useful facts.
