        Book Description

She has as much business keeping a stray dog as she would walking across Egypt–which not so incidentally is the title of her favorite hymn. She’s Mattie Rigsbee, an independent, strong-minded senior citizen who, at seventy-eight, might be slowing down just a bit. When teenage delinquent Wesley Benfield drops in on her life, he is even less likely a companion than the stray dog. But, of course, the dog never tasted her mouth-watering pound cake. Wise and witty, down-home and real, Walking Across Egypt is a book for everyone.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Surprised delight........2007-01-10

Reading this delightful little story provided me with surprising and pleasing experiences remembering family and neighbors very like Edgerton's characters. Also I found the themes of aging and family intriguing.

5 out of 5 stars Funny and Sweet.......2005-02-25

Mattie is a little old church going lady who lives alone and gets mixed up with Wesley, a 15 year old jailbird. Her children, a grown son and daughter, are horrified. So are the neighbors, and her fellow church members. But Mattie and Wesley are innocents; Mattie determined to "do good", and Wesley was just there for the cooking. At one point he tried to steal a cake. There is something special about this story, you'd have to read it to understand. And it is truly one of the funniest books I have ever read. The story is wonderful, but the five stars are for making me laugh out loud, not once but all thru the book.

3 out of 5 stars Life in the South of the Past........2005-02-03

Because of that dog, Mattie's life changed from complacency to a purpose which led to a friendship with the local dogcatcher and a fondness for Wesley, the grandchild she'd never have. He wanted to think that she was his grandmother, as he did not remember his mother.

Both her children (daughter and son) had remained unmarried and, like sons today, had little time to attend to her needs. After all, she is aging and having 'problems' coping; that is, until Lamar and Wesley take advantage of her good home cooking.

She not only saves Wesley literally, but the dog also, as she changed her mind about needing a companion in her latter years. She decided maybe it was her time to 'walk across Egypt' and get on with her life.

There were some Southern stereotypes like the Baptist preacher and nosey neighbors, but Wesley was an orphan of the world. He could be anyone's lost child who just needed to feel a bit of love and some direction of right and wrong. Mattie provides both. Each needed the other for different reasons and the ending proves that environment indeed does count more than genes.

4 out of 5 stars Honest, Lighthearted Storytelling.......2004-05-27

Because I'm a complete and total idiot I read this book and its sequel in reverse order. However, I found that my blunder didn't spoil the plot in the slightest bit. The two plots were completely individual--you needn't read one to understand the other.

Egypt tells a story of an old woman named Mattie who's "slowing down." At 78 she fears she's getting careless and senile, however has too much pride to give up the lifestyle she's become accustomed to: watching her soaps at 1 PM everyday and making sure no one knows it. She won't even keep a dog because she's so set in her routines that she fears she won't have time to mind it.

You know the sort: those Southern women whom would tell strangers fixing their shutters or delivering their mail what time they should stop by on a given day so that they can have a hot slice of pie waiting for them when they come by. Those strangers will inevitably show up, too (wearing a bib and carrying a paper plate and piece of tin foil to take some home with them).

Mattie reminded me so much of my ever-servicing grandmother that I had to cringe. The monkey-wrench that gets thrown into the works is Wesley: a juvenile delinquent who oddly enough is willing to change his heathen ways in exchange for a piece of "the best pound cake ever" and the ability to take a hot bath.

This blend of sinner and saint in novels is nothing innovative, but the extent to which Edgerton stretches it out it seems to be almost hyperbole. (I can assure you from my own experiences that it's not!)

I loved this book. There's so much of the North Carolina I know in it that it makes me giddy

4 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Story for the Whole Family.......2004-05-16

Mattie Rigsbee, an older woman and mother of two children, lives alone in a small southern town. She is "slowing down" according to her, but keeps up a very lively pace for someone of her age. Her two children are middle aged and still single, something that she just cannot understand or change, no matter how hard she tries. Mattie's enjoyment in life comes from cooking for anyone that stops by, no matter who they are. This little bit of kindness gets her in trouble when she meets Wesley Benfield.

Wesley is the local dogcatcher's nephew and a juvenile delinquent. Mattie cooks him some food and takes it to him in the detention center. This act of kindness towards Wesley makes him believe Mattie is his grandmother. She was only trying to be kind to " the least of [his] brethren" as it says in the Bible, but this little gesture begins a whole lot of trouble for Mattie and the residents of her small town.

This book is a wonderful read for people of all ages. Edgerton does a magnificent job of conveying a story about family values and southern cooking in this outstanding novel. Anyone who has an older grandmother who is "slowing down" will sympathize and relate to this book immediately. Mattie is a wonderfully dynamic character, and this book is filled with delightful humor. This author does an incredible job of displaying old southern values and showing how one person, though a little "out there", can make a difference.

Shadowtime is an opera based on the work and life of the German philosopher, essayist, and cultural critic Walter Benjamin. The libretto by Bernstein was written for the internationally renowned composer Brian Ferneyhough. The opera had its premier at the Munich Biennale in 2004 and has been performed in Paris and other German cities. In July of 2005, the opera will be performed by The Lincoln Center in New York City, at which time the published libretto will be featured.

Charles Bernstein is one of the most noted poets of contemporary American literature. His books include Islets/Irritations, The Sophist, Dark City (which will be reprinted by Green Integer in 2006), With Strings, and a collection of selected poems, Republics of Reality: 1975–1995 (published by Sun & Moon Press and available through Green Integer). He is also acclaimed for his critical essays, which include Content's Dream (Sun & Moon Press, now available from Northwestern University Press) and A Poetics (Harvard University Press), and, in addition, a collection of essays and poems, My Way: Speeches and Poems. Formerly the David Gray Professor of Poetry and Letters at the State University of New York, Buffalo, Bernstein is now a professor of literature at the University of Pennsylvania. The author uses too many sophisticated words, therefore, the student won't remember much of the material that was just read. I would not recommend the book, it is not going to put any depth into the topic. Most of the time reading this book turned out to be worthless

The explosive biography of the greatest college football coach in history.

When Paul William "Bear" Bryant died on January 26, 1983, it was the lead story on the all three networks' evening news. New York City newspapers reported his death on their front pages. ("Crimson Tears," read the headline in the New York Post, "Nation weeps over death of legendary Bear Bryant, 69.") Three days later, America watched in awe as an estimated quarter of a million mourners lined the fifty-five mile stretch from Tuscaloosa to a Birmingham cemetery to pay their respects as his three-mile long funeral cortege drove by.

President Reagan and the three former American presidents sent flowers, as did people as diverse as Bob Hope, ABC's Roone Arledge, advice columnist Ann Landers and the Reverend Billy Graham. Scores of Bryant's former players, including Joe Namath, Lee Roy Jordan, Ken Stabler and Ozzie Newsome, were in attendance. So were Bryant's most distinguished colleagues, the greatest living football coaches, including Southern Cal's John McKay, who said, "It was like a presidential funeral procession. No coach in America could have gotten that. No coach but him. But then, he wasn't just a coach. He was the coach."

Bryant's passing was noted with the kind of reverence our country reserved for statesmen or military leaders, though Paul "Bear" Bryant had insisted for much of his life that he was "just a football coach." For millions he was much more, he was the greatest coach the game ever saw, the heir to the tradition established by Knute Rockne. He took his Alabama Crimson Tide teams to an unmatched six national championships. But to the players, journalists and fans whose lives he touched in his more than half a century as a player and coach, he was the last symbol of values that transcended football—courage, discipline, loyalty, and hard work.

To his critics, Bryant represented the dark side of big-time college football—brutality, fanaticism and blind adherence to authority. The real Bear Bryant was far more complex than either his admirers or detractors knew. While maintaining a public friendship with Alabama governor George Wallace, he continually sought ways to undermine the governor's segregationist policies, finally forcing a legendary football game in Birmingham with the University of Southern California that opened the floodgates to the integration of football at the University of Alabama, including its coaching staff. Old fashioned in his politics, he was nonetheless an admirer of Robert Kennedy, whom he planning to vote for in 1968.

Allen Barra's The Last Coach traces Paul Bryant's rise from a family of truck farmers to recognition as the most successful and influential coach in the game's history. The eleventh of thirteen children, Bryant was born in tiny Moro Bottom, Arkansas in 1913 and grew up in nearby Fordyce—where his legend was born when he wrestled a live bear on the stage of a local theater. Paul was raised by his mother, who barely managed to keep him out of trouble and on the Fordyce High School Redbugs long enough to get a football scholarship at Alabama, where he would meet and marry the love of his life, campus beauty queen Mary Harmon Black.

At the height of the Depression, football took Bryant to the Rose Bowl with Alabama's 1934 national champions and on to a career as an assistant and, finally, a head football coach, where he matched wit and grit with the greatest coaches of two generations, men like Tennessee's General Robert Neyland, Oklahoma's Bud Wilkinson, Notre Dame's Ara Parseghian, Ohio State's Woody Hayes, and Penn State's Joe Paterno. Along the way, he stirred controversy with his infamous "Junction Boys" training camp in 1954, during which almost two-thirds of the Texas A&M football team quit; his legal battle with The Saturday Evening Post over the accusation that he had conspired to fix a college football game, a trial which rocked the sports world; and his pursuit of Amos Alonzo Stagg's all-time record for college coaching victories.

Through it all, Bryant's influence has not only endured but prevailed as his former players and assistants continue to define the best in not only college but professional football. 32 pages of photographs.

There has never been anybody quite like the Bear. He was with out a doubt the greatest coach that ever lived, but besides that he was a great man. He did so much for so many young people. He helped a lot of them get an education that they might not have gotten if not for him. He gave a lot that people never knew about. Any one who loves college football will enjoy this book, but this is a must read for Bama fans!

                                    5 out of 5 stars A Legend Remembered .......2006-09-26

I read this book from cover to cover very quickly. The book was both revealing to me about the more human side of Coach Bryant as well as a wonderful opportunity to walk down the memory lane of Alabama football in the 1970s. To me the book was more of a compilation of thoughts, notes, and interviews through the years, but in its own way provides a unique kind of insight to the John Wayne of college football coaches.

Coach Bryant was not a perfect man, but I must agree with the author that there are those who are role models and there are those who mold and build role models. Coach Bryant in his legendary, yet imperfect way, was just that to countless people. Many of them, like me, never met Coach Bryant, but in some way find ourselves focusing, working harder, and trying to overcome the odds because Coach did it and if he can do it, then we can too. Long live the legend of Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant

This book really covers all topics you need to know about sniping. A great book for somone who is trying to become a sniper or for a seasoned veteran who wants to brush up on their fundamentals. The book covers things like rifle and ammo selection, range estimation, wind, weather factors, mil-dots, and everything else. Especially nice was a chapter on how to fill out your log book. The log books are so important, but no one else really shows you how to fill one out.

This book covers just about everything you need to know, and reads easy - it is not dry and overly technical. The end of the book covers several tactical scenerios and explains how a sniper in these situations would accomplish their shot. Definitely recommended.

This is an outstanding book jammed with information for both the novice and master shooter alike. I constantly review sections though I read the book a few years ago.Subjects include what makes a rifle a precision weapon, ammunition, optics, position, the difference between military and police sniping, etc. It's definately a keeper.
