A very good insight into a modelling career.......1998-02-15
This is a very good guide to how to make a career in modelling. The book also gives a great insight behind the scenes of the industry and the many different types of models there are-from 'Supermodels' to runway and part modelling. The book also looks at beauty and health(which is often a criticism of the industry). I think it is a good book for up and coming models as well as those(like me)who are just interested in the behind the scenes stuff! I bought the book for my girlfriend...and I haven't stopped looking at all the great pictures.

Piranha Club Forever.......2001-11-01
Unfortunately, my local paper dropped Ernie like a hot potato years ago. Collections like this are the only way I have to satisfy my craving for "Sophisticated Literature". B. Grace keep them coming.
Ernie Is Full Of Laughs.......1999-02-22
To my knowledge, this is the first collection from Bud Grace's excellent comic strip 'Ernie' (now known as 'The Piranha Club'). Not done in the typical comic strip book style of publishing all comic strips from a certain time period, this book is divided into chaptered segments containing some of Bud's favorite earlier work. A must have for any Ernie fan!
It's all in the moose.......1997-02-20
If you are not already an Ernie fanatic, look at the cover of this book. If you suffer a hernia or suddenly find yourself in a room with padded walls, chances are you liked it. If you want to read about erudite subjects like moose-milking olympics, going on a date with a chicken, cross-dressing, nose-hair removal systems, etc., or merely want to find out whether Quacko the human duck is a duck who looks like a man or a man who looks like a duck, or in fact a mongoose, buy the book immediately. If you don't like it, give it to your mother-in-law. On second thoughts, even if you like it, give it to your mother-in-law. Chances are she'll never bother you again.
On the other hand, of course, if you are already an Ernie fan you're probably too busy reading the book in your padded cell to read stupid book reviews.

Dave Meurer is the BEST.......2007-08-30
Dave is a very funny guy. He will make you laugh. I love him and my wife does too! The only word of caution is: If you own his book entitled "Stark-Raving Dad," it's the same book with a different title. I did not know this and I was very disappointed that I didn't have a new Dave Meurer book to read and make me laugh. But it will make a great gift. The gift of laughter!

Book Description
Alfred Hitchcock called the silent "the purest form of cinema," and the ten silent films he directed between 1925 and 1929 reveal the young director's mature artistry. Hitchcock's silents have often been characterized as the work of a talented amateur, a young director practicing his craft during a pre-sound era of antiquated instruments and poor film techniquesthe director experimented with myriad points of view, unique camera angles and movements, and special effects such as dissolves, blurriness, and violent cuts. These films, however, contain the first appearances of some of his greatest and most familiar techniques: the vertigo-inducing crowd scene, the symbolic use of inanimate objects, the manipulation of the audience's emotions, and the self-conscious, often macabre wit.
This work discovers Hitchcock's early talent and skill through close readings of the films from The Pleasure Garden to the silent version of Blackmail, using shot-by-shot descriptions and interpretations. Each film's chapter includes technical information, a summary of the critical response from the film's release to the present, and detailed analysis of the camera techniques and themes Hitchcock uses.

Book Description
This highly acclaimed study of English song is now available as a one-volume paperback.
The book is the first detailed study of an unusually fruitful interrelationship between English music and English poetry. The period covered is known as the English Musical Renaissance and runs from the last years of the nineteenth century to the second world war. Stephen Banfield traces the late flowering of Romantic impulses in solo song during these years, surveying it from critical, analytical and historical angles. He plots the growth of an English stylistic sensibility in song in the decades leading up to the first world war, discusses in detail the plateau it reached between the wars (particularly in the 1920s), and shows how and why it declined as other musical concerns took the field.
Poets whose verse was set to music most frequently, including Housman, Hardy, de la Mare and Yeats, are treated at length, as are pre-eminent song composers such as Butterworth, Finzi, Gurney, Ireland, Quilter, Somervell, Stanford, Vaughan Williams and Warlock. There are chapters on the Georgian movement, the Celtic twilight, and the composers of the first world war. In all, more than 50 composers are discussed, and numerous individual songs, some as well known as 'Linden Lea' and 'Sea Fever' but also many others less easily accessible.
In the final section of the book, besides providing an extensive bibliography, Dr Banfield catalogues over 5,000 songs, giving dates of composition and publication and much other detail, listed by composer. The index refers the reader to these song lists by the names of the authors of the texts as well as by the names of their composers. This comprehensive survey willprove an invaluable reference guide to all students of the subject.

Comprehensive and Excellent.......2004-01-03
This is possibly the single most all embracing and informative book on english art song and the major players in the vocal music of the English Musical Renaissance. The style is lucid and practical, and the bibliography, catalogue, and index are superb research tools. An unqualified recommendation.

Customer Reviews:
Great Read.......2007-05-27
This book is great for anyone! A lot of the concepts apply specifically to advertising, but there are great lessons for managers of other industries as well. It's a fast read and a good addition to any collection.
Does Roy H. Williams ( (( Really know )) ) what he's talking about?.......2007-01-29
Prior to reading this first of three books I wondered does Roy H. Williams really know what he's talking about? (I guess when you become a Read-o-holic and you've read more than a few thousand books you began to wonder is this all a game? A game of money for books or what.)
My second thought was has this man compiled some great stories illustrating some pre-used concepts on Marketing? You know something I've heard before. (Because if you're like me you don't need to buy another book that would have been better to convert into firewood or toilet paper).
My third thought was...So what is this magic that Roy means by "The Wizard Of Ads"? It's really quite easy for you to get into the mindset that you've been attracted by another great title worth $16.95 but where's the book?
Well The Wizard of Ads really is quite refreshing even after five years it hasn't lost it's Useful life (depreciated in value) or it's Shelf life by growing stale. I bought this book on January 9, 2002 and it's still helping me convert my thought life over into an amazing master of Marketing.
I'm not going to tell you about the book as much as I am going to tell you why I feel it works for me and if you're lucky and you like what I share it just may be a good book for you to get too. You see Roy H. Williams really has done something fresh.
This book is filled with 100 concepts that every good ad-woman or ad-man should know. And if you're really not into Advertising or Marketing concepts maybe you'll find it in you to tell your mind to "Shut UP!" for a moment so you can see how easily these concepts apply to Selling, Customer Service, Management or becoming a dangerously articulate entreprenuer business person like Roy.
The first of 100 illustrations or stories opens with an interesting conversational tone that pulls you into the dialogue and from there you really never quite feel like Roys talking to anyone but you. That's what grasped my attention.
Next although this book is paper back it is well constructed. Words printed on egg shell white paper and wonderful nostalgic imagery from the past but don't let that fool you. (The stories are quite universal and can be used in various industries). He talks about Mouse Traps, Sharks and Pigs, Nine Secret Words and a Peep behind the curtain (from the Wizard of Oz).
These unusual titles run from the beginning to the end of the book and every story is full of zeal and freshness you can use in your concepts. He helps you formulate a Marketing mindset, an approach and a wise way to tap into your audiences attention without being corny, trite or confusing.
I've waited till now to right this review as it has taken me years to test these ideas again and again. What's nice is they all are effective and cheaper than hiring Roy yourself. But a man with ideas like this is worth hiring. Get the book...It works! And yes Roy H. Williams really knows what he's talking about.
Is there anything I can do for you?
Your Servant,
Deremiah, *CPE
A Fun Read for Anyone - Guaranteed!.......2007-01-12
A fun book full of stories and thoughtful views. The first section is more advertising related... but still interesting. The rest of the book is a wonderful read and VERY entertaining. 1-2 page chapters are great for people like me who can't pay attention very long. Read one a day. Read a few at a time. It's great! Highly recommended.
The Uncreative Need Not Read.......2007-01-03
I agree, the first two-thirds of the book are great, the last third is a little slow. You will find the first third contains the tools to make copywrite magic. The middle third is about "don't blame the advertising guy for customers not coming back because your an inept fool in a business". The last third is about courage to follow your dream.
I have read other marketing books about how to get to the target audience, but none of them discussed the nuts and bolts of what good copy looks like or how to make advertisements that sell. Roy is thought provoking and has great insights. Creativity must be supplied, but the tools of using that creativity are in the book.
Each page is an example of a good advertisement. You become hooked, you become engaged, and you are rewarded by the time you reach the end of the page.
If you are trying to learn how to become a marketer this book also isn't for you, yet. This book works best with someone who already has a foundation in marketing but looking for information on advertising.
Wisdom from the Wizard.......2006-12-09
This book made me a Wizard of Ads junkie. His wisdom and insight in marketing, business, and even your personal life will resonate like a finely tuned instrument. Buy it, read it, again and again.
Five stars out of five. For an outline of this book and other great books in business go.
Customer Reviews:
Honest and valuable.......2007-07-27
There are many great resources directed at families and now, more than ever, there are many choices for those on the spectrum. In this book, we have a bit of both-- this resource is appropriate for many different audiences and allows the reader to learn from many who are connected to life with autism. This is an excellent choice for "introducing" someone to autism but also for those who are well versed but want to expand their understanding.
Lift Every Voice And Shout!.......2007-06-18
We have climbed that mountain and seen the valley...from up high, you get a wonderful panoramic view. I want everybody to join us on this mountain and lift up your voices and shout about autism!
Shout about the challenges of having autism; living with someone who has it or about the reaction that those uninformed about autism express. Shout out a celebration of having autism as well because people with autism make life much more interesting. Shout about the injustices towards those with autism and stupid prejudices about autism such as that tired "R*** M***" (which is a slur in the autism world) cliche. Shout out about what autism means to you personally. Do an autism dance if you need to. Add your voice and be heard!
This is an excellent book. Relatives of people with autism as well as professionals get to add their voices to the chorus about autism and its affect on people at large. Readers get treated to the personal insights of those who contributed to this wonderful book.
This is a book that I feel everybody will benefit from and come away with a larger store of tolerance and acceptance of autism. I like the wide range of voices and experiences that are heard and shared in this book. That makes for a richer chorus. As for adults with Asperger's, make this book a new friend and join in the Mountain Top Chorus!
I've recommended this book many times since reading it.......2007-03-28
Reading Voices from the Spectrum was like talking with friends who knew and loved my son. The Autism spectrum is so varied, but the majority of entries had something I could relate to. While reading I started taking notes, I found new ways to explain my sons' needs, in IEP meetings as well as to friends and relatives. I highlighted supports to implement and ideas for his future. From sibling entries I gained an added appreciation for how my other children might be feeling.
There are many books on the Autism Spectrum with valuable facts and research information, but this is the only one I've found written by people who actually live the facts and research.
A Voice of Wisdom and Understanding.......2006-05-09
In my work as the Editor of a large, international newsletter for parents of individuals on the autism spectrum, I read about 6 books each month on individuals with ASD, their families, new therapies and research. This book is absolutely superb. Dr. Naseef's essay as a parent is one of the most porfound, realistic and positive I've read in my 24 years of service to the autism community and in my 34 years as the parent of a woman with autism. The variety of essays and perspectives sets this book apart from all others.

Having a spouse that has autism.......2006-05-03
In this book I was so pleased to read about other people being married to a person with autism. They talk about how the spouse with autism did many things that they didn't understand but they still stayed in the marriage and I feel that is because being married to a person with autism is being married to a very unique and caring person.I have survived 49 years of life with autism. In this book I read so much that was similar to my own life. I highly praise the people who have helped and got so deeply involved with the children with autism. I unfortunately never had that kind of help when I was a child. All the stories in this book should be read by anyone who wants to understand the beauty of autism.
Customer Reviews:
Great Read.......2000-02-26
Posen's reasoning is lucid and his writing is a pleasure to read. Usually identified as part of the Waltzian or neorealist school of thought in international relations, Posen argues for the primacy of structural factors in explaining unit-level outcomes (in this case, military doctrine). One thing he does not address is potential influence of another unit-level characterisitic, regime type, in determining military doctrine. But overall, an ambitious and cleanly laid out argument.
Why Organizational Theory Does Not Explain Military Doctrine.......1999-07-28
Barry Posen's work is a comparison of 33 hypotheses drawn from organizational theory and balance of power theory. The test of these hypotheses is the military strategy of interwar France, Germany and Great Britain.
While Posen's work has great explanatory value for the formation of military doctrine, what it does in actuality is refute the richness of organizational theory for explaining the sources of military doctrine. The problem is that Posen did not seemingly intend to refute organizational theory.
The book offers a well balanced response to the work of Jack Snyder on the ideology of offensive military strategy. I would highly encourage graduate students and facutly of international relations and military science to read this work.
Book Description
What America looks like to the rest of the world
Americans rarely used to think about the outside world. As the mightiest nation in history, the United States could do as it pleased. Now Americans have learned the hard way that what outsiders think matters. When terror struck last September 11, author Mark Hertsgaard was completing a trip around the world, gathering perceptions about America from people in fifteen countries. Whether sophisticated business leaders, starry-eyed teenagers, or Islamic fundamentalists, his subjects felt both admiring and uneasy about the United States, enchanted yet bewildered, appalled yet envious.
This complex catalogue of impressions--good, bad, but never indifferent--is the departure point for a short, pointed essay in the tradition of Common Sense and The Fate of the Earth. How can the world's most open society be so proud of its founding ideals yet so inconsistent in applying them? So loved for its pop culture but so resented for its high-handedness? Exploring such paradoxes, Hertsgaard exposes uplifting and uncomfortable truths that force natives and outsiders alike to see America with fresh eyes.
"Like it or not, America is the future," a European tells Hertsgaard. In a world growing more American by the day, The Eagle's Shadow is a major statement about and to the place everyone discusses but few understand.

Customer Reviews:
Great Debate Book.......2007-09-26
I bought this book for a writing class and am glad that I got to read it. Hertsgaard makes many good points about America's role in the world. Thought there are some things that you will disagree about every thing gets you really thinking. Really take the time to read the book and it would even be better if you got someone else to read the book at the same time to talk about what is said in the book.
Why the World Hates America, and wants to be American.......2007-05-11
I can love my child, yet disagree with some of his behaviors. In the same way, I have lived internationally for much of my life, and there is always a tension between honoring my birthland, and acknowledging the mistakes in its foreign policy. Mr. Hertsgaard gives a brilliant, and frustrating look at how foreigners see the United States. If I go house to house in my small village in Europe, I could find hatred of the US, blind adoration of the US, and every flavor of opinion in between. The USA is hated because of its unopposed military and economic power. The USA is hated because not everyone in the world gets to move there and become wealthy and famous. The USA is loved because it is universally seen as a free country where anyone with motivation can become wildly successful in achieving their material dreams.
Mr. Hertsgaard expresses the same opinions, based on interviews in many places around the world. However, he tells only the sound-bytes of hate or love of the USA. Surveys of public opinion reflect media and informal network buzz, and this certainly is the way opinions about the USA change. In The Eagle's Shadow, world opinion showed pity after 9/11, and disgust after 2003.
I appreciated the attempt to show breadth and depth of opinions, and to balance statistical reporting with personal emotions of respondents. To balance this view of the US, I suggest reading "Why Europe will Run the 21st Century" by Mark Leonard.
Mr. Hertsgaard, what about writing a sequel to your book, along the theme of "Why America will Run the 21st Centure?"
Thanks for a great book. Below are a few of my favorite quotes:
--Friend or foe, rich or poor, foreigners tend to fear America for its awesome military power even as they are dazzled by its shimmering wealth.
--One can logically argue, as I would, that the United States in no way deserved the September 11 attacks ( there is never any excuse for terrorism, period) and the perpetrators absolutely should be brought to justice, while adding that the attacks cannot be understood, outside the context of American foreign policy and the resentment it has engendered.
--Uncomfortable truths don't go away just because powerful voices want them shouted down. Nor is dissent un-American; quite the opposite. IF one lesson of September 11 is that no nation is invulnerable in today's world, surely another is that America can no longer afford to ignore what the rest of the world things, even when--perhaps especially when--it is not laudatory.
--The United Sates had shot down an Iranian civilian jet it mistakenly believed was a military craft. All 290 passengers died. When Bush senior was asked if an apology was in order, he replied, "I will never apologize for the United States. I don't care what the facts are."
A misleading book with a hidden agenda.......2006-12-16
As a reader looking for an objective, international view of the United States and its role in the world, I was very disappointed with this book.
In a couple of places, Hertsgaard highlights some key issues and raises some good questions. But the bulk of the book is comprised of his own take on the U.S. and its problems, a view that is one-sided and highly biased, presenting a lot of debatable points as if they were "fact" and offering very little to do with international opinion.
Arguably, most foreigners don't even care about many of the domestic issues Hertsgaard's examines, such as racism and media bias, let alone understand them. Yet Hertsgaard's focus, ironically, is on what is important to America and Americans, rather than the international community.
I am a non-American, and like Hertsgaard, have traveled and lived in numerous countries around the world. In my experience, this book is not an educated, objective analysis of the U.S. from the outside as much as it is a rant from the inside by a frustrated American who thinks because he has travelled he has somehow gained perspective and insight into his own country. He clearly has not.
America, the Devil.......2006-07-01
Suddenly, everyone is condemning America. Rock 'n Rollers, writers, artists, actors and actresses, foreign dignitaries. They're all pointing their finely manicured fingers at us "vulgar" Americans warning us about our "decadent" lifestyles and "hegemony." We're too fat, too materialistic, too self-centered, too violent, too pushy, they decry. And this, they insist, is why the world hates us. But first it warrants asking: are all theses stereotypes true? Are we Americans really that horrible? Where are the facts to prove it?
Leftist author Mark Hertsgaard in his book "The Eagle's Shadow: Why America Fascinates and Infuriates the World" doesn't attempt to answer these questions. Instead, his aim is to perpetuate the anti-American stereotype, to exonerate and explain away those who hate us. One of the most mind-boggling parts of Hertsgaard's book is when he attempts to extol African culture over American culture (which part of that vast continent he extols he does not make clear). The Africans, he insists, lead a far more relaxed, casual lifestyle than our own frenzied one. Americans are too greedy and pushy and violent. If only we could be more like the Africans, the world would love us, and peace would reign over the land.
Statistics show, however, that Americans are rather laid-back, moreso than even those precious Europeans. The Swiss, for example, are more concerned with time than the average American. And as far as being violent, once again statistics show that Americans are less violent than even the saintly Canadians. But the Left never allows for facts and figures to interfere with its arguments. So instead, Hertsgaard praises Africa's primitive ways, which, to him, are more idyllic. Once again ignoring data, he fails to acknowledge Africa's AIDS crisis, genocide, female mutilation, mass starvation, tyranny, ethnic warfare and average lifespan of about 46 years.
Leftists like Hertsgaard who bash America on all levels while praising the most war-torn, impoverished societies on earth make clear their intentions. The world, Hertsgaard argues, should not rest until America is brought down to its level. In Hertsgaard's religion of socialism, America is the devil, and anyone who hates the devil is level-headed and rational. If only we stupid Americans would wake up, and realize how much better off we'd be if we succumb to the world's hatred and allow ourselves to lead the lives of those innocent Africans, with their baskets on top their heads, quaint huts made of straw, and their machetes, tyrants, starvation, and early death...
Interesting for the wrong reason.......2006-04-19
With a title suggesting strong emotions, hard questions put and harder answers given, I was intrigued by the idea of an American author attempting to describe and interpret non-American views of the U.S.A.; an awareness and understanding of non-American viewpoints evidently a major failing of Americans at present.
Unfortunately, foreign perceptions of the U.S.A are only the ostensible subject of this volume; we see very little of the opinions of Hertsgaard's interlocutors and too much of Hertsgaard's own, rather commonplace, views.
With this mundane work, Hertsgaard merely perpetuates a perception that Americans, 'liberal' or not, are solipsistic, trite, and sublimely indifferent to the views of the foreigners whose lives are so affected, unwillingly or not, by American global political, social and corporate adventurism.
So, for this reader, no fascination and no fury, but as one feels with so many American products, just contemptuous amusement and weary disappointment.

Book Description
As the most compact known observable form of matter, neutron stars offer a fascinating range of problems to astrophysicists. This book offers a collection of reviews of current research on neutron stars, variously observed as radio pulsars, X-ray binaries, gamma-ray sources and sources of thermal X-ray emission. The reviews are meant for an audience of graduate students and scientists in the field, so they combine a tutorial approach with the objectives of a scientific review. The central theme of the book is evolution, stressing the changes of thermal, magnetic and dynamical properties throughout the lives of neutron stars.
