Customer Reviews:
Three times as lazy!.......2004-02-17
The cat who eats from noon to night, and then sleeps the rest of the time, is back for another round of making us laugh.
"The Third Garfield Treasury" contains the Sunday comics of our favorite cat from August 29, 1982, to September 30, 1984.
In this collection of funnies, you will see Garfield get ribbon-tied by little girls, turn Odie into a basketball, romp through the flowers (while they're still at the floral shop), entertain the masses on the fence, and much more.
Although these particular strips are two decades old, they are just as funny today as they were back then.
Garfield Is A Great Cat With A Belly Full Of Laughs!.......2002-05-19
Back in color again. Garfield, Odie, Jon, Liz, Nermal, Lyman, are all back again to serve out a bunch of laughs in thier comic strips from Sunday, bigger, bolder, and in color. This book has all sorts of things going on in Garfield's cat life. He gets nailed to the cieling for a practical joke he played on Jon, and other funny things. The colors in this book are bold, bright, and beautiful, showcasing Garfield nicely.
This is a good book. Only problem, this is where the logos started being cut out. Still a good buy.
Great Book!.......2000-04-06
I think that you should buy Garfield Tresurey because it is full of laughs. It is realy great book and I think the revewer will love this hilarius book.

Customer Reviews:
pricey.......2007-06-09
For the outrageous price one gets a very succint introduction into the habits of the Icelanders, not entirely updated.
It is very good for a two hours fun read for someone who does not really plan to visit the country. The amount of information given is more easily gathered through a TV documentary though, and anyone wishing real help should address oneself elsewhere.
To keep matters very light but do it more usefully, about 40 more pages would have sufficed, together with a more rational partition of topics.
I would have appreciated more attention to the intercourse between foreigners and natives, not excluding the more friendly or even intimate point of view.
The author exploits the customary habit of British essayist of making fun of every detail. He does it very well and I found myself laughing silly at times, but puns in the end tend to get in the way of information instead of helping one to memorise it.
Greetings from Iceland.......2003-04-11
This humorous "guide" gives insight to the character and behavior of the Icelanders. Everything from knitting to politics is covered. Some of the information given in this book is now outdated, such as the restrictions on the importation of dairy products. These tend to be minor details and do not take away from the quality of the book. No pictures.
Great & Humorous Insight.......2002-11-02
What a delightful surprise I had in store when I purchase this book for a friend that will be traveling to Iceland for the first time. I couldn't put it down once I opened it. Filled with humor and hopefully some truth it is delightful from start to finish. Now I wish I were the one traveling to Iceland!
Fantastic portrayal of a nation.......2000-06-28
This book is fantastic. I'm Icelandic myself and everything this book states is completely correct and a greatly humorous view of the nation. Apart from a few misspelling Icelandic names and concepts this book is wonderful

28 interviews ranging from John Agar to Mel Welles, with a very well done index to boot. Indeed, I find browsing the index great fun, as many favorites are touched on during the interveiws (ex: Jerry Warren's memories of Bruno Ve Sota and Harry Thomas' stories of Tor Johnson.) If you are a B Monster Movie fan, this is a must.

Chess Openings for White, Explained: Winning with 1. E4 (Alburt's Opening Guide, Book 1)

Release Date: 2006-07-06 |
Book Description
Volume I
New ideas, technical novelties an more on the age old Italian game with 4,d4!, allowing the sharp and forcing "Italian Gambit" to emerge. This move, a surprising one to many, transforms the classic "Giouco Piano" or literally the quiet game into anything but its revered and somewhat sedate namesake.
Black's third move, 3...Bc5 seems "safe" and allows the second player plenty of time to develop (quietly) for positional play. This will occur on White playing almost any reasonable move, except for the center assaulting initiative gaining 4.d4!...being the main focus of this endeavor.
4.d4! is clearly a forcing move, Black must react! Whatever unfolds from this point, White will have central control, lead in development, the initiative and it is White not Black who will get the first emerging opportunitites.
Accurate play by Black is necessary to hold and neutralize the initial gains of opposition, and it will be difficult to demonstrate anything better than equality, or that White cannot claim real compensation for the gambit pawn.
This Book involves no less than three (3) years of study, Master analysis; including complete computer verification of all important variations.
Volume II
This masterful work is short, yet concise and to the point, guiding the 1.e4 player in handling and management of all of Black's classing opening responses.
1. Nf6 - Alekhine's
1. e6 - French
1. d6 - Pirc
1. d5 - Scandinavian
1. c6 - Caro Kann
1. c5 - Sicilian
1. Nc6 - Nimzowitsch
These lines have been studied and developed over many years by the venerable Chess Master and teacher Jude Acers, they are the essential and recommended lines for all play that commences 1.e4, but are especially effective for the new "limited" time controls in present and future tournament play.
All levels, whether they be the first or second side of the board will discover fresh arsenals for both attack and defense. As White, once you embrace (and you will) these "to the point" openings, this book will take you via clear reference to the sources of future study. As Black, you must be prepared. The reader will not be overwhelmed by masses of theory or endless analytical variations, but shall discover how and where to find such material.
- A clear opening guide for the newer player
- A no nonsense opening system for the more advanced player
- New concepts for the Upper Echelon of chess to meet the coming evolution of "Knockout" and "less time" in serious tournament play.
- STAY ON TOP, become a world super star in the global phenomena of mass appeal.

Customer Reviews:
eccentric but fun.......2006-04-15
I enjoyed the references to classical games and the way the author showed how the theory developed. I play the Max Lange whenever possible but castle first before pushing the pawn. Knowing more of the theory here would have saved me working it out myself through a lot of trial and error over the years. There is much in this volume to think about.
That said, it is a rather eccentric piece of modern publishing. The layout and even the typefaces are all over the place. Some of the games referenced annoyingly don't have dates. The Classical Giuocco Piano header notation on page 128 doesn't match its diagram.
The book is a bit like Alice in Wonderland, things get 'curiouser and curiouser' although it is fun to look around.
Very badly organized.......2005-02-27
This book has a lot of original ideas and a lot of colorful stories, but the arrangement of the material is very bad. It is rarely clear what "best" play is supposed to be, and when Acers encounters a theoretical problem he will often cop out with a remark that the line gives good practical chances or is very strong in fast-time-limit games, rather than trying to get to the objective truth. The reader must do a great deal of work to construct a real repertoire from this book -- there are enough good chess ideas that it can be done, but a lot of irrelevant material is thrown in, because Acers can't resist name-dropping or showing some famous brilliancies that don't actually bear on the analysis in the book.
The main theoretical contribution is Laven's "Miami variation" -- 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bc4 Bc5 4 d4 Bxd4 5 Nxd4 Nxd4 6 Be3!, which appears to give sufficient compensation to equalize and good practical winning chances against an unprepared opponent. This means that 4.d4, previously thought bad, is actually quite playable, and has many transpositional advantages. The other valuable analysis is in the Two Knights variation 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bc4 Nf6 4 d4 exd4 5 e5! d5!? 6 Bb5! Ne4 7 Nxd4, where it is shown that Black cannot fully equalize and White can maintain an endgame bind with a small advantage (and no losing chances).
A Unique and Entertaining Chess Book.......2004-12-16
This book contains much analysis not found anywhere else. How many currently published chess books can say that? What makes this book so entertaning is the collection of personal stories by Master Acers that permeate the volume. One sees a unique perspective on chess in the trenches and learns unique twists on classic games. This is a great chess book to study or just to read. I highly recommend it.
JUDE ACERS - Great Chess Player and Storyteller.......2004-02-15
It's Awesome!! The simplicity of the read is breathtaking! The Italian Gambit System is one of the best gambits I've ever seen. No other author writes like this!
Italian Gambit -awesome book.......2004-01-31
Jude Acers has written an awesome book ! I love the graphics, the chess stories, the chess analysis, and Jude's commentary. Jude brings to life many American chess players, who played the game with great heart and spirit. Jude's prose is filled with the fighting spirit of Bobby Fischer and Ken Smith. Jude's passion for the game comes out in his lively prose.
HIs chess stories remind me of the oral history style put to prose by the great Studs Terkel. This book is a must read for anyone interested in chess, or the history of its players, including many great american chess players who are not known that well. Honor is due Jude ACERS on his outstanding book ! I hope his book will spark a new american renaissance in chess!

Very good for the target audience.......2007-09-18
"Very good for the target audience" - I think this sums it all. If you are someone who has not done active maths for some time now, and therefore does not remember the concepts involved very well, this is the book for you. This I will say holds true for most of the books of the Manhattan Quant series.
The Manhattan Quant series books cover the concepts only to the degree that gets asked in the GMAT, and do not overwhelm you.
Plus, as each of the Manhattan books then turns to the Official Guide for practice, each of the books has a section where the appropriate questions for that topic are numbered from the OG. They also detail the toughest of the lot from OG. Here I think the book is useful for anyone, irrespective of the personal comfort level with maths.
Therefore if you are true to yourself and practice the questions marked from OG as you go along, this would prove to an excellent resource for cracking the quant part of the GMAT.
Fantastic!!!!.......2007-02-16
I highly recommend this book for anyone who has not done the type of math in the gmat for quite a while. Also, if you would like to get some tips on translating the gmat word problems better, and quicker. Time is of the essance with the gmat.
=)
I found this book to be an excellent aid for beginners, and the advanced. You need to get the official gmat book as well to get official questions. What I will tell you is after studying this book you will be able to tackle the gmat math very easily. Its all spelled out in plain english in this book.

Book Description
From the author of the critically acclaimed New York Times Notable Book The Dressing Station, comes an electrifying memoir of a doctor's education in the classroom and on the battlefield. No other field of medicine carries so much individual responsibility as that of a surgeon. Growing up in Durban, South Africa, in the heat of social change, Jonathan Kaplan became a doctor and was appointed to a post at a woefully understaffed South African general hospital in a black township. Fleeing apartheid, he traveled the globe in search of sanctuary, experiencing riots, tropical fevers, and political upheaval. Kaplan eventually landed in Angola, taking charge of a combat-zone hospital, the only surgeon for 160,000 civilians, where he was exposed daily to the horrors of war. In Contact Wounds, Kaplan portrays serving as a volunteer surgeon in Baghdad -- where he treated civilian casualties amid gunfights for control of hospitals and dealt with gangs of AK-47-wielding looters stripping pharmacies and militant Shi'a groups harassing doctors out of operating rooms. Contact Wounds is a stirring testament of adventure, discovery, survival, and the making of a career devoted to saving people caught in the crossfire of war.
Customer Reviews:
A Tragic Sign of our Times.......2006-06-04
This is the story of an education that few would choose. Dr. Kaplan tells the story of a life spent as a real life MASH surgeon. Not even though in as good a set of conditions as on the film/TV show.
He began his life in South Africa at the time the black Africans were beginning to demand rights from the white Government. From there it seems that he went from one hot spot to another. Israel at fourteen, just after the Six-Day War. He says he became a doctor because it took a long time in school and he enjhoyed school. It was after that that his real education began. Instead of allowing himself to be drafted into the apartheid army he began a self-exile from his home country. Since then he has been in one war after another.
Surprisingly there are few moments of philosophy or anger at a system that has given him plenty of places to practice his specialty of war sugery. So many that the Royal College of Surgeons in London has set up a course to prepare surgeons for future conflict. This is not a good sign for mankind.
As a book, it has its funny moments, it is excellently written. It is only in the overall image that the consumate tragedy comes through. The last sentence in the book: 'But every day I read the war news like job-vacancy ads, looking for peace.'
No Ordinary Life.......2006-03-30
Jonathan Kaplan has written a book that imerses the reader in a world that could be straight out of a Hollywood script, and should be a Hollywood script. I couldn't put it down. Nobody could ever call this man's life mundane. Growing up in a Country struggling to find itself, then travelling to some of the worlds worst places, all the while helping others in desperate need, and sometimes getting himself into hot water. A "naughty" guy who has a zest for life and adventure. I loved it, a great read.
I couldn't put it down.......2006-03-01
Kaplan has written a marvellous prequel to his "Dressing Station" - from his childhood to the present day. The book is compelling, and I guzzled it down in a single sitting. It is authentic, humorous, poignant, intelligent, and uncompromising. He manages to flip into history and politics and back again, without losing the thread of his story. As the book progresses, the relevance of everything to everything else becomes evident. A far better book than his aclaimed first book, in my view.
A book for realists, graveyard comedians, and armchair saw-bones.......2006-01-11
Jonathan Kaplan is a soldier in his own private war. Expatriate by choice from his home in South Africa, he wanders the world looking for other people's wounds to stitch. He has spent time in the battlefields of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century, Angola and Iraq being primary among them.
What does a war surgeon on temporary assignment do? "Acute war surgery is crude but straightforward: stop the bleeding, cut away the lacerated tissue." Seems simple enough, and Kaplan continually stresses that he is no genius, a man who became a doctor, he claims, because med school was a long course and he figured he'd enjoy college life. Much of what has happened in his thrown together life has been the result, to hear him tell it, of serendipity or mischance. But his modesty is an obvious cover-up. The man is brilliant, dedicated and brave. His excellent writing style is icing on the cake.
The book takes us through Kaplan's journey as a teenager to an Israel wracked by recent war, his first experience of trying to live sane in a landscape of chaos. Exploring the underground bunkers in the kibbutz below the Golan Heights, the young Kaplan saw medical supplies laid out and understood "the truth at the heart of the practice of medicine: that there was no mystery, that learning and skill turned these ordered bits of equipment into the means of stopping bleeding and bringing together shattered tissue to make a greater order, to save a life."
Kaplan got his medical education in South Africa during the apartheid years when dedicated whites practiced their craft in deprived and dreary township clinics under haphazard conditions. His residencies included an aborted stay in the Seychelles, where a casual affair with a girl linked to the dictatorial president "Jimmy" Mancham sent him to ground. Returning to Cape Town he barely squeaked through his finals. Feeling less than confident in his ability to actually practice medicine, he was advised by a friend to "listen a lot, look sympathetic, and nod slowly."
From Kaplan's adventures, you get the impression that medical temping may be a final frontier for people who need to live on the edge. Everywhere he goes he finds broken bodies and heart-rending human wreckage. He deals with each case as it comes before him and leaves with some regret to move on to the next crisis. The MASH-side humor glues the tragedies together: the dog that ate the condom, the incident of the piece of finger among the shrimp. Somewhere along the way, without drawing much attention to it, Kaplan became an expert consultant as well as a surgeon. "I worked on an investigative documentary in Japan about the hunting of dolphins on an industrial scale for their meat...then as a doctor in an embattled Burma's Shan State." He spent a relaxing and generally exhilarating time as medical adviser to an English doctor series on the telly. "Doubts that stalked my career progression were forgotten."
One of the sadder portions of the memoir concerns Kaplan's companion Andrew, who went on a mission that he himself had deferred, ending with the discovery of his friend's corpse in the jungles of Madagascar. Though Kaplan could easily overcome fear, queasiness, and the big questions as he skimmed from war zone to war zone, he had lingering sorrow and guilt concerning Andrew's loss that continued to haunt him.
This is a book for realists, graveyard comedians and armchair saw-bones. Maybe it will inspire someone to get out of their chair and follow in Kaplan's intrepid and erratic footsteps. But one suspects that when they made Kaplan, they broke the mold.

While Kaplan isn't self-aggrandizing in any way, I couldn't help but admire him after I finished this utterly absorbing memoir. It has the same kind of appeal as the movie The Year of Living Dangerously-- only, he's a doctor, not a journalist, and the experiences he has are real. From growing up Jewish in South Africa during apartheid, to living on a militant kibbutz in Israel to being a war surgeon in shockingly primitive conditions in an Angolan field hospital, the stories he tells are gripping. I really couldn't put this one down.

Soldiers of the English Civil War (2): Cavalry (Elite)
ASIN: 1855329913
Release Date: 2001-02-25 |
Book Description
This, the first ever Osprey campaign title to deal with the English Civil War, looks at the battle of Edgehill, the first major clash of the Wars. In 1642 both Royalists and Parliamentarians expected that one great contest of arms would see the crushing of their enemies. When their field armies blundered into contact on the evening of 22 October 1642, Prince Rupert urged King Charles to array his army on the great ridge of Edgehill and give battle. The next day, amidst abject cowardice and absolute courage, the tide of battle swept Rupert’s cavalry to triumph, but saw victory snatched away as the Royalist infantry was hurled back by the defiant Parliamentarians. The chance for decisive victory was lost and the bloody civil war raged on.

A Good Introduction to the English Civil War.......2001-04-13
Edgehill 1642, which covers the opening campaign of the English Civil War, is an excellent introduction to that conflict. Authors Keith Roberts and John Tincey enrich this addition to the Osprey Campaign series with in-depth research on the opposing commanders, doctrine and tactics.
Following the standard Osprey format, the book starts with a good section on the origins of the Civil War (although the accompanying illustrations in this section are not very supportive), followed by an excellent campaign chronology. The next section, on opposing leaders, is broken down into sub-sections not only by Roundheads and Cavaliers, but also by foot, cavalry and artillery. There is no separate section on opposing plans, but strategic perspectives are addressed in the section on the opening moves of the campaign.
In a surprising but welcome departure from standard Osprey format, the authors devote 23 whole pages (a quarter of the volume) to the section on opposing armies. This section, entitled "Raising the Armies," details a number of germane issues, such as the difference between contemporary Dutch, German and Swedish tactics (with excellent diagrams). The organization of foot, horse and artillery units is discussed, as well as unit structures and formations employed. Two points of relevance to the battle are discussed herewith; first, that the armies were about equal in strength, but second, the Royalist forces were hampered by equipment shortages and poorly-trained infantry.
The four battle scenes that accompany the section on the battle are excellent, as well as the 2-D and 3-D maps. The result of the battle was mixed, with the Royalist cavalry routing their opposite numbers, but the Royalist infantry was smashed by a well-timed Roundhead counterattack. Both armies pulled back to lick their wounds. Although King Charles made a thrust toward London after the battle, he withdrew to Oxford after it became obvious that he lacked the numbers to storm the capital. Probably the only criticism of this volume is the lack of a separate appendix on order of battle. The information is included in several diagrams and the maps, but there is no comprehensive list. Also, the information on casualties is a bit vague. Otherwise, this is a welcome addition to any collection on 17th Century warfare.

Book Description
Donna Haraway's work has transformed the fields of cyberculture, feminist studies, and the history of science and technology. Her subjects range from animal dioramas in the American Museum of Natural History to research in transgenic mice, from gender in the laboratory to the nature of the cyborg. Trained as an historian of science, she has produced a series of books and essays that have become essential reading in cultural studies, gender studies, and the history of science. The Haraway Reader brings together a generous selection of Donna Haraway's work. Included is her "Manifesto for Cyborgs," in which she famously wrote that she "would rather be a cyborg than a goddess." Other selections are taken from her three major works, Primate Visions, Modest Witness , and Simians, Cyborgs and Women , as well as some of her more recent writing on animals. For readers in cultural studies, feminist theory, science studies, and cyberculture, Donna Haraway is one of our keenest observers of nature, science, and the social world. This volume is the best introduction to her thought.

Most Important Readings in One Book.......2006-05-10
This book is a wonderful collections of the seminal essays of Donna Haraway. Thankfully, they are also the "easiest" to understand (though Haraway is never really precisce) [she speaks about that in the book, actually]. The most informative, and entertaining, essays are The Psyborg Manifesto and her new essays on companion animals.
(in other words, read this instead of the hell that is Simians, Cybrogs, and Women)
Stellar!.......2004-05-24
An excellent introduction to the writings of Professor Haraway, but also a necessary addition to her previous books. (It is nice to find essays once only located in various anthologies now within the same book!) The new essays on dogs and kinship are stellar, illustrating how Harway's work is moving forward to advance the study of science and politics in everyday life contexts. A must read in cultural studies, feminist theory, and the history of race and ethnicity.

Book Description
Birding is booming. The hobby (or, in many cases, passion, or even addiction) has been growing steadily for years, according to studies conducted by both governmental and private organizations. An amazing number of people -- more than 70 million, by one 2001 survey of recreation preferences -- say they participate in birdwatching.
Undoubtedly, many of these people simply put feeders in their back yards and enjoy watching the hummingbirds, chickadees, and goldfinches that show up. But just as certainly, more and more birders are venturing out to discover the fun of seeing new birds in new places, whether it's a drive through a national wildlife refuge or a guided walk at a nature preserve.
Once someone has discovered the joys and challenges of birding, it doesn't take long to learn that there are places in the United States that experienced birders visit as surely as geese fly south in the fall. These spots are to birders what the Rockies are to skiers, or Pebble Beach is to golfers. Such a place is the region encompassing the Texas Gulf Coast and the lower Rio Grande Valley -- now the home of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, a state-designated driving route connecting more than 300 birdwatching sites from the Louisiana state line to the Mexican border. Brown highway signs, marked with the profile of a Black Skimmer, point the way to these bird-rich destinations.
Exploring the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail examines highlights of this popular route: locations ranging from national wildlife refuges with tens of thousands of acres to small city parks to stretches of isolated road passing through birdy habitat. In this guide, expert birder/writer Mel White profiles more than 80 of the best sites along the trail, chosen for diversity of habitat, species, and seasonality; productivity; and accessibility. Site listings give general (and often specific) directions, contact information (including websites when available), advice about when and how to bird the location, and a listing of some of the notable species that might be found. Also featured are nearby museums, nature centers, festivals, and accommodations of particular interest to the visiting birder.

Book Description
"Is there a state with a more marvelous array of birds than Texas? I can't think of one. John P. O'Neill's paintings, showcased handsomely in this book, present a selection of Texas's finest in glorious color and detail."
BirdWatcher's Digest
"John O'Neill must be regarded as one of the most diligent and creative painters of birds of our generation.... His dynamic style, often involving bold use of light and color, has inspired several other artists of his circle."
Guy Tudor, illustrator of
The Birds of South America
What makes any bird a "great" bird? For some birders, it's the rarity of a species that they've finally added to their life list after years of patient watching. Others will tell you that the great birds are the most beautiful ones. But most people know that the great birds are simply the ones we like the best, rare or common-the ones that have imprinted themselves indelibly on our lives.
This beautiful book presents exquisite paintings of forty-eight Texas birds chosen by John O'Neill and Suzanne Winckler as their own personal "greats." Some of the birds are as common as they are beloved. Others are definitely life-list birds-rare, beautiful, exotic-sounding, or all three at once. The authors have also gathered a flock of well-known Texas birders and nature writers to offer personal, scientific, or literary observations about each bird. In all, forty-eight writers, one to a bird, are included here.
These beautifully detailed paintings and the observations that accompany them make a convincing case that these are, indeed, the great Texas birds. Whether you're a serious birder or simply a backyard bird watcher, you'll find in this book a "lovely edifice" where people who care about birds can be together.
Customer Reviews:
Great Gift Book.......1999-12-11
This book is beautifully illustrated, designed and written. It is a perfect book for anyone who likes birds and an equally perfect book for those who love beautiful things. The latter might find that they love birds after reading the book. Overall, a very well done book.
