Silly.......2000-10-04
Well, I was given this book as a gift, and, although it's humorous in a sick sort of way, it's certainly not a real workout. How many cats are really going to sit patiently while you do your third set of curls? No cat I've ever met. I think it would be more realistic if Stephanie Jackson were shown in her poses, covered in scratches inflicted by a pissed-off cat.
What a great book!.......2000-02-24
I've already tried catflexing, and my cat, Mulder, absolutely loves it! It is actually a good workout, and it is so much more fun than any other workout I've tried.
I don't suppose all cats would be up to the strange ways you need to hold them for the exercises, but if your cat doesn't mind, then I would definitely recommend this book!
I love this book!
The "Purr"-fect Gift for Lovers of Cats & Fitness!.......1998-01-22
Stephanie Jackson has crafted an endearing and informative "tale" that reflects her lifelong love of both cats and fun exercise. The tongue-in-cheek commentary will beguile even the mildest of cat fanciers--and she even includes several little-known pointers about cat nutrition. Even if your cats decide to remain inquisitive spectators, they'll enjoy watching **you** play with human toys (i.e., barbells) in their stead. Can't wait to see the video!
Both my cat and I say meow/thanks!.......1997-11-12
My caregiver was skeptical, but this book really worked! I can already see some results, and me and my cat Whiskers get to spend fun time together! Thanks a big bunch! Elizabeth Murray.
Step aside Jane [Fonda]...and Garfield! This is a hit........1997-10-15
The best book...um, the ah, only book in its league! Catflexing has got to be the most entertaining yet sincere and informative book I've picked up regarding cats or exercise. What a wacky combination...Jackson's really on to something here.

Customer Reviews:
Awesome Bowie Pictoral Guide.......2003-10-04
This book is great for fans of David Bowie. It's loaded with awesome color photos spanning his entire career, from Ziggy's flashy red hair up to the late '90s and his ultra-cool Union Jack overcoat. Bowie has always been one to set fashion trends, and "Bowiestyle" is a very entertaining and enlightening look at David over his exceptional career. The written passages aren't quite as impressive, but they do hold lots of neat trivia-type information and very nicely augment the high quality photography. (and hey.. if you want a Biography, there are several available) Overall loads of fun to leaf through, and a cool look back at the styles and trends that this artist so deftly influenced.
nibblings from a pie too large.......2002-07-30
Yes, good pictures. But most written parts are shallow snippets. That and it's too small a book for the TONS of BETTER photos out there that you happen upon when searching for such things on the internet(where can those be had in printed form?). This book should have had an "easy-wide-open" binding, 100 more pages, less flacid/obvious commentary, and NO thumb-sized cut-up pages being passed as flashy "graphic design"(more like graphic resign...David?).
If a book of the same size and length were comprised for only a couple of years per volume THEN this would be great. Bowie's amazing, but why this gaseous flounce?
Good for 12-yr-old fans treading the foothills.
Simply the best!.......2002-05-09
This book is quite simply the best Bowie book out there.
If you're a lifelong fan, such as myself, you will thoroughly enjoy it from front to back cover!
It's quite simply Bowie Brilliant!!!
SIMPLY THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2001-03-12
Oh Lord, not another Bowie book! I was expecting it to be OK - you know, a few nice pix I hadn't seen before or had forgotten about, plus the usual mishmash of facts we've read in countless bowie biogs over these golden years.
How wrong could I have been?
This book is nothing short of trancendent. It would surpass the expectations of even the most uncritical of Bowie fans. Why? Well there's...
The quality of the paper and reproduction of the photos and artwork, not to mention the stunning front and back covers - simply inspired. I can't remeber the last time I saw a book cover as suitably stylish as this .
The many, many photos - literally hundreds of them. From what I can gather, there has never been a Bowie book with so many photos in it. The fact that so many of them are completely beautiful and, to my knowledge, never seen before (and I already own quite a few) makes this an essential point.
The fascinating text - do we really want to read the same old yarns about insanity in Bowie's family and the ongoing feud with Angie? I think not, and we're spared them here. Instead the text effortlessly matches the relevant pix, with clever, insightful (and very English) prose and superb captions - at times extremely funny and entertaining, at other times highly informative (who knew that Ronnie Wood inspired the Duke's costume in 76, eh?).
Oh I could go on for ages... but BowieStyle really lives up to it's title. An immaculate collection indeed. BUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good book for fans.......2001-03-10
This book was way better than I expected.
First of all, something not immediately apparent when you buy the book off of Amazon is that this book is big, about 12" by 10". All the pages are glossy and filled about half with color photographs, the other half with commentary and quotes.
The book isn't arranged in a linear timeline like a biography would be. Instead it breaks down by theme, with sections on topics like musical periods in Bowie's work, lady loves, musical influences, influential books (Bowie has apparently described himself as a "born librarian with a sex drive"), origins of Ziggy, people influenced by Bowie, etc. Each section is filled with relevant photographs, quotes, and historical info. Not only is it well-researched and great eye candy, but the author's insights are pretty interesting too. The author must be a fan or otherwise have some kind of photographic memory, since the text is peppered with obscure references to Bowie songs that are pretty fun when you notice them.
If you're looking for a straightforward biography, then this isn't it. Although Bowiestyle probably contains as much information as a biography would, it's not ordered linearly by time like your average biography is. I found it all the more interesting to read for that, though. Of all the books I've seen on Bowie, I rate this the best. One Bowie fan to another, a good buy.
Book Description
The Exclusive Story behind Intuit's Hard-Won Success
It's a modern-day David and Goliath story for the business world: a company dreamed up at a kitchen table, built on explosive PC growth, and forced to battle a giant in the race to revolutionize an industry. This is the story of Intuit, creator of renowned software products like Quicken, QuickBooks, and TurboTax-the company that beat mighty Microsoft and changed the way 25 million people manage their finances.
Written by Intuit veteran Suzanne Taylor and seasoned business manager Kathy Schroeder-who were granted exclusive interviews with founder Scott Cook and other key figures- Inside Intuit tells this company's original and fascinating tale for the first time. The book vividly recounts each dramatic stage of Intuit's development: from initial conception to "bet the company" investments; from strokes of marketing genius to disastrous product launches; and from battles for survival to successive victories against arch-rival Microsoft-the company no one else could beat.
Evident throughout this account is the power of Intuit's relentless customer focus, which guided the company from tiny start-up to a 6,000-employee, $1.4 billion business. Instructive and inspiring, Inside Intuit> chronicles an enduring company's extraordinary success against overwhelming odds.
"This important book doesn't take any shortcuts in analyzing the building blocks of success. Taylor and Schroeder have written a fascinating blow-by-blow account of the thousand and one decisions that have made Intuit what it is. Highly readable, thorough, and extremely well researched Inside Intuit is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand success in Silicon Valley."
-Emanuel Rosen, author, The Anatomy of Buzz
"Inside Intuit is more than the history of a start-up that grew to dominate a major software category. It is a blueprint of success for entrepreneurs and investors who want to build great businesses in difficult environments."
-Roger McNamee, cofounder, Silver Lake Partners and Integral Capital Partners
"Inside Intuit is a very entertaining book. Any entrepreneur at heart will enjoy and learn from the story of how Scott Cook and Tom Proulx faced so much adversity and came back from the brink of disaster to build a very successful, highly admired Silicon Valley company. Readers can learn many lessons from both Intuit's successes and mistakes. In the end, good ideas, hard work, determination, and strong values really do pay off!"
-Dan Rudolph, Senior Associate Dean/Chief Operating Officer, Stanford Graduate School of Business
"I was thrilled to read the inside story of how Intuit was born and raised. I've always admired Intuit's strict attention to customer needs and feedback. Now I have a much better idea of how that culture was created."
-Stewart Alsop, General Partner, New Enterprise Associates
"Inside Intuit offers readers the secrets behind that company's extraordinary success. The authors' insights into how Intuit trounced Microsoft alone are worth the price of the book!"
-Andrea Butter, coauthor, Piloting Palm: The Inside Story of Palm, Handspring and the Birth of the Billion Dollar Handheld Industry
Customer Reviews:
good read.......2007-05-07
This book has a compelling start and middle but tails off towards the end. I will read it again soon though....I liked it.
A nice inside view.......2007-02-12
Being an Intuit supporter for 15 years as well as an alpha tester of Quickbooks for windows I admit with no hesitation I am biased when it comes to Intuit related things. This book exceeded my already high expectations as a great inside view of the start, sputtering and surge of Intuit. The Microsoft connections were very interesting to read as well. Being a business owner it showed how culture dedicated to providing excellence to the customer can pay off as well even though it looks like it might cost alot to perform. It was an easy read and I strongly recommend it....
Not Quite the Whole Story.......2005-05-31
The book is written by insiders. They make the new CEO out to be quite a hero. Better ask some Intuit customers about that.
Great Case History of a Continuing Business Model Innovator!.......2004-05-02
How many companies have survived direct battles with Microsoft? Not very many. How many lived to win over direct battles with Microsoft? Even fewer. Intuit is in that elite company. That experience alone would make the book worth considering.
The authors have done an outstanding job of building on that potentially fascinating subject matter by successfully capturing the key elements of how Intuit has continued to succeed as a business model innovator through four CEOs. I was especially pleased to see that the book captures the values that led to this innovation, the organizational and process methods used to stimulate and pursue the innovation, and the motivations of the key innovators.
In addition, the book moves down into the organization to capture the thoughts and emotions of many of the Intuit employees as it moved from its P&G style focus on customer needs to a broad-based expansion through acquisitions to a GE-style disciplined approach to achieve performance in key areas.
In fact, this book was so fine that I had to ask myself what was missing before I could spot any flaws. The only area where the book is a little light is in describing the details of how Intuit's software development changed over time, and what the lessons were. Now, don't mistake my point. There's plenty on that subject (especially when Intuit was a start-up), but there could have been more . . . if this book were to become a case history source on software engineering.
But no book can be everything to everyone, and currently there are few books that explain continuing business model innovation through generations of senior management. So Inside Intuit becomes a must read for those who want to master this critical leadership and management task.
By the way, Inside Intuit is a very apt title. The authors seem to have had unrestrained access to company insiders. The book comes away much richer as a result than any other Silicon Valley saga that I can remember reading. Most of those books focus on one to three people in the company, and leave it at that.
As I finished the book, I wondered what improvements in its continuing business model innovation Intuit will make next. I can hardly wait to find out!
Wonderful!.......2004-04-04
When Inside Intuit arrived in the mail, along with four other books I'd ordered, it was the first one I picked up to browse. Seven hours later, I finished the book! Reliving the experiences, placing myself in the events (I worked for Intuit for over fourteen years - by way of ChipSoft), was an overwhelming experience for me.
I remember the first time I met Scott Cook. Leo Redmond, at the time managing the Intuit Supplies Group, and I had just finished lunch in Palo Alto. As we drove back to his office, we talked about Quicken and how it was the second product I bought for my first computer in early 1989 (the first was Sim City). Leo said that he'd like me to tell Scott about it. Scott was excited - "You have five years of Quicken data?" He told me to install the latest Quicken beta as soon as I got home - he wanted to know how it handled large data files (mine was over two megabytes at the time). That was nearly ten years ago.
What an experience! Having been hired by Evy Chipman in late 1988 and working closely with every top-echelon executive on the ChipSoft side (Gaylord, Harris, Gleicher, Lane), I never thought I'd be so intimidated - stammering - as I chatted briefly with Scott in his office.
Reading Inside Intuit brings you into Scott's (and many others) office - you are in the presence of greatness when you read this book.
Book Description
Firefighting is a world of absolutes: evil is a red devil that wants destruction and death, good is a charged hose line, full of water to fight the flames. The best and boldest firefighters in the country, the men of Rescue 2 are hand-picked to fight not just the biggest blazes but any other emergency New York can throw at them. The sheer adrenaline of the job is perfectly captured in the dramatic story of their firehouse, a model for others nationwide-dubbed 'the cuisinart' because it slices up new recruits. The story begins in the late 1990s as Phil Ruvolo takes command from Captain Ray Downey, a legendary FDNY leader. Ruvolo inherits a stubborn group of vets, still loyal to Downey. He also steps into a firehouse mourning the recent loss of a brother-Rescue 2's first fatality since the 1950s. Ruvolo not only faces the challenge of transforming the house into his Rescue 2, he must also keep the men united and, later, bolster their spirits through 9/11 and beyond. Tom Downey takes us into the fireman's world: the smell of their coats after a good fire, the hardened eyes of a veteran after a fellow fireman's death, the humor and camaraderie. His firemen are not cardboard heroes; they're a group of gritty, larger-than-life personalities brought together by dedication and a mission to save lives. Rescue 2 doesn't leave a fire until everybody's safe. They're the last men out. Theirs is an inspiring story destined to become a classic.
Customer Reviews:
awesome.......2007-07-09
the most moving book I have ever read.It takes the good with the bad. No sugar coating, all honesty.
A good way to scratch the surface..........2007-03-29
I should know: I'm a firemen's daughter. In fact, I'm a Rescue 2 firemen's daughter (we're a special breed) and have spent my entire life in the wacky world of Rescue firemen. Although it's really hard to capture the type of insanity and devotion these guys have for their jobs - Tom does a really good job. If someone you love is a fireman: read this book. It'll help you understand them better. Hey, even if you don't know anyone whose a firemen you should read this book. I just have 1 bone to pick with you Mr. Downey: Captain Ruvolo's daughters are not what I would call "pampered" (p.62). He loves them and they love him just as much.
great book .......2006-03-25
Amazing stories in this book. You get the feel of the life of a member of the famed FDNY RESCUE 2. It is the kind of book that you read one chapter, and say..."Just one more chapter and I will put it down." But you cant put it down. After I finished the book, I said "I wish there could be more stories." Highly recomend this book to anyone interested in the life of those crazy enough to run in where the rest of the world runs out!
A Good Read.......2005-08-20
A very good documenary about Res2cue. It really captures the lifesyle of firefighters and how they enteract with one another in good and bad times.
It further discribes the hours of vigorous training and education needed to perform rescue work in NY city, from a child impaled on a wrought iron fence to rescuing one of their own from a collapsed building, to the 9-11 collapse of the Twin Towers.
An excellant book for fire service leaders and those who wish to be.
So glad to be an American!.......2005-07-29
What a fantastic book! It gives you just a glimpse of some of the former and present day men of Rescue 2. It's a look into the daily life of a firefighter while also getting to know the personalities of these brave men. I didn't want to put the book down. I laughed and cried throughout the book. I'll always have a high respect for firefighters. This book just reinforced my conviction. Well done Tom Downey!

Reading the Man: A Portrait of Robert E. Lee Through His Private Letters
ASIN: 0195115090 |
Book Description
From Robert E. and Mary Lee to Ulysses S. and Julia Grant, Intimate Strategies of the Civil War examines the marriages of twelve prominent military commanders, highlighting the impact wives had on their famous husbands' careers. Carol K. Bleser and Lesley J. Gordon assemble an impressive array of leading scholars to explore the marriages of six Confederate and six Union commanders. Contributors reveal that, for many of these men, the matrimonial bond was the most important relationship in their lives, one that shaped (and was shaped by) their military experience. In some cases, the commanders' spouses proved relentless and skillful promoters of their husbands' careers. Jessie Fremont drew on all of her connections as the daughter of former Senator Thomas Hart Benton to aid her modestly talented husband John. Others bolstered their military spouses in less direct ways. For example, Ulysses S. Grant's relationship with Julia (a Southerner and former slave owner herself) kept him anchored in stormy times. Here, too, are tense and tempestuous pairings, such William Tecumseh Sherman and his wife Ellen--his foster sister before becoming his wife--and Jefferson Davis's fascinatingly complex bond with Varina, further complicated by the hostile rumors about the two in Richmond society. Throughout, these historians paint remarkably intimate portraits of their subjects, ranging from hints of sexual passion, to the wives' fierce protectiveness of their husbands' reputations, to the surprisingly frequent visits of spouses to the front lines and battlefields. Readers will see these famed men in a way that they perhaps never considered: not merely as famous leaders, but as lovers, husbands and fathers. Illuminating a frequently neglected but extremely significant side of military history, Intimate Strategies is a must-read for anyone seeking fresh perspective on some of the war's best known commanders and a landmark contribution to Civil War history.
Customer Reviews:
very insightful.......2003-01-08
Carol Bleser and Lesley Gordon did a wonderful job with this book, delving into the personal lives of several famous civil war figures, along with black and white photographs of the couples. Some of the marriages in the book include the Shermans, Grants, Lee's, Custer's , Stonewall Jacksons, and many others. With so many figures from the civil war this book gives a wonderful overview of some of the more famous marriages and there family life. With so many figures to choose from I think the authors did a suberb job with the couples they featured. This is a book not to be missed.

Fascinating insights re personal lives of Civil War leaders.......2001-11-22
This collection of twelve essays explores the personal lives of prominent Civil War military commanders and their wives. The writers paint vivid pictures of how family life and the war were interwoven. The most striking thing to me is the great variation between the relationships of the various commanders and their wives, all within the Victorian societal structure. I think this book makes great reading for everyone, regardless of a person's interest in history.

Book Description
Radical environmental groups throughout the world, militantly committed to defending the ecology, are growing in size and influence. In this country, activists engage in ecological civil disobedience and "ecotage"-- the sabotaging of equipment to prevent ecological damage-- in the struggle to preserve wilderness lands. These ecoteurs have gone beyond traditional conservation concerns to a new philosophy-- Deep Ecology, or biocentrism-- that calls into question not only the wisdom, but the legitimacy of humanity's domination of nature. In "Green Rage", Christopher Manes has written a brilliant defense of radical environmentalism, challenging the ethics of modern industrial society and asserting the right of the natural world to blossom, evolve, and exist for its own sake.

Green Rage, the birth or modern environmental activism .......2007-02-18
Green Rage charts the American environmental activism movement from Alod Leopold through Dave Foreman and the Sierra Club to the more demanding activism of EarthFirst! and ecotage. A must read for anyone serious about the denfence of the environment against the onslaught of those who view our wilderness areas as a pile of commodities available to the highest corporate bidder.
Green Rage!.......2006-04-14
I admire the old Earth First!. They had the repution for being over the top radicals, but in retrospect were they really all that radical? I don't recall anybody involved with Earth First! ever doing anything violent, even in self defense, and there were several instances where EF! people were physically attacked. There were tree spikings and vandalism that was attributed to them but the majority of the tactics they used were really just text book civil disobedience. The out and out criminal acts that were attributed to Earth First! turned out to be done by government agents in their bogus attempts to frame Dave Foreman. EF's main thing was the idea that forests and wildlife were just as important as human life and were more than something to be exploited and used for profit and enjoyment.
Although Green Rage isn't exactly that, it is probably the closest you will get to a manifesto for the old Earth First! before the founding members left and Earth First! became intertwined with bad left wing political causes and political correctness. Green Rage also serves as a pretty good history of the environmental/conservation movement. Highly recomended reading!
Best Book on Environmental Crisis, Ecowarriors.......2000-05-18
Green Rage is the best book on the market portraying the roots of our environmental problems. It gives an in-depth, personal account of the brave activists who are fighting to protect the Wild. Most important, the book cuts through the usual rhetoric about sustained development and "green" consumerism to get to the core problem: our spiritual disorientation that stems from being alienated from nature. The first-person stories it tells of ecowarriors and their battles against greed and stupidity (including detailed accounts of "ecotage" against environmentally destructive companies) are inspiring. A must-read for anyone not completely brainwashed by consumer society (and it might even convince those folks too). The fact that the book has been so prominently attacked by the apologists for the continued destruction of wild nature for economic gain (it's quoted extensively by appalled anti-environmental writers) testifies to its honesty and importance.
Green Rage - loud talk, no brains.......2000-03-03
The brief, passionate title of Manes' book certainly caught my eye. Unfortunately, Manes makes no convincing arguments on behalf of radical environmentalism in this tedious diatribe. Instead, he simply spouts empty rhetoric and a few conspiracy theories. Manes emphasizes his contention that civilization is on the brink of collapse due to our violent attitude toward nature. Do we need to change our attitude toward nature? Well, I think so. Will Manes' book convince anybody of this? I doubt it. If you want to read a good book about the Earth First! movement, read "Confessions of an Eco-Warrior," a homey but surprisingly articulate collection of essays by Dave Foreman, an on-again, off-again proponent of radicalism. The best I can say about Green Rage is that if you are into radical environmentalism, it will get you riled up. The worst I can say is that it does a disservice to the environment by being a waste of the paper it is printed on.
A good overview of the early Earth First! movement.......1998-12-13
Christopher Manes gives a compelling rationale for the rise of radical ecology groups, specifically Earth First! which he was a part of at the time. The history of Earth First! as presented here is somewhat one-sided, both because of the author and because of the date it was published (1991). Earth First! around the time the book was published had undergone a split between the original founders of the group (the "misanthrope" faction) and newer elements based on the West Coast who wanted to incorporate Earth First! into the broader context of the feminist, peace, neopagan, and social justice movements. Manes was part of the former faction, which left Earth First! around the time his book was published; thus, his history of Earth First! is now badly dated and tends to concentrate only on the faction he was part of. (This faction left the movement they had originally founded and started a magazine called "Wild Earth" as well as a large number of grassroots wilderness groups which have become part of the mainstream ecology movement). The Earth First! of today is not the same group at all which Manes' book is about, but rather is aligned with urban anarchists, feminism, and neopagans. Nonetheless, this is an excellent book to read if you are interested in the history of, and rationale behind, Earth First! prior to 1991. For a more up-to-date analysis of Earth First! and the rise of the newer faction that took over the group, also read Dave Foreman's _Confessions of an Eco-Warrior_, Martha Lee's _Earth First!: Environmental Apocalypse_, and Susan Zakin's _Coyotes and Town Dogs_.

great intro to digital and birding.......2007-03-15
This book was exactly what I hoped it would be. It started out with explainations of dslr cameras and associated equipment, explained terms like ISO and aperature, and then went into example of settings for different bird photograph scenereos. easy to read, concise, great photos.
Excellent book and up-to-date.......2007-01-28
Intended audience for this book can be easily understood from the title: birdwatchers with digital cameras. Book has three sections of roughly equal length devoted to (1) equipment, (2) photographing birds, and (3) digital photo editing. The excellent bird photos throughout the book include identifications of the birds, where the shot was taken, and the camera settings. Although the overwhelming majority of the photos in the book seem to have been taken with 500mm lenses, Tipling's message is not simply "get big lenses and get close". He seems to have traveled everywhere in the world to shoot birds, there's good info here about photographing birds in your backyard and in the city. One of the best things about the book is that it's up to date. It's all about digital photography, for starters. He talks about both digital SLRs and compact cameras and does not turn up his nose at the latter. He discusses digiscoping, for example - a way for compact digital cameras to get great shots with the help of birding scopes. In the section on software, he's aware of Adobe Lightroom, which as of today (1-27-07) is still in public beta. I would have been happy perhaps with more pages on photographing birds and fewer pages on post-processing on the camera, but his section on photo editing is geared specifically to editing photographs of birds. All in all, I have found the book to be informative, suggestive (his photos make me want to do the same thing), and enjoyable.
Oh, the book has a forward by John Fitzpatrick, director of the famed Cornell Lab of Ornithology and blurb from David Sibley himself on the back!
