Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A small bit of Tick info, but you are better off just getting the actual material, itself. Then again, if it is only $2, no real harm done.
This book is nigh-invulnerable!.......2002-05-20
However, my cat did get at one corner and chew it up in one of her chew-toy phases.....
Here, collected into one shiney red volume, is nigh-everything you needed to know about the Tick. All of his wit, wonder, and convoluted logic. Here also is Arthur's angst, American Maid's shoe specs, the occasional appearance by the always well-groomed Die Fladermaus, and a liberal helping of everyone's 2nd favourite super-villain, the Evil Midnight Bomber What Bombs at Midnight. Of course, our favourite villain is the Man Eating Cow, but she doesn't talk.
The book is full of illustrations and little bubbles with useful Tick-isms. There are bios on all the Tick's superhero friends, as well as his supervillain nemeses. Most helpful is Arthur's casebook, chronicling his and the Tick's adventures battling crime in The City (this is essentially an episode guide of the animated TV series).
Unfortunately, there is little new here that isn't in the TV shows. However, it's a great book for the coffee table, one where you can start and stop reading anywhere and find something funny. Anyone entertained by the show will definitely like this book.
The nearly perfect guide to the Tick TV animated series.......2001-12-17
Greg Hyland (of Lethargic Lad fame) did a great job on this hilarious book that has a nearly complete episode guide, a list of heroes and villains and hero lessons in this awesome book. Greg Hyland did great work and knows how to get a belly laugh out of me. Only Ben Edlund himself could have done it better. Great book for fans of the animated series. The only problem is that they should have waited for the series to finish so they could have a more complete book.

God I love this book..........2001-06-03
I love The Tick. The Tick is keen, which is why this book is so neccesary for anyone who fancies themselves a fan of The Tick.
Starting out as a comic book (which it still is) The Tick was then turned into a television show on the famed Fox kids network. Unfortunately, the genius behind the Tick was apparantly big on procrastination, never having episodes ready on time. This prompted the cancallation of the program, but I'll always still love it. Even 5 years later, it remains one of my favourite shows of all time. There was so much humour that I never got when I was little. But now, I pick up on the jokes that I never understood when I was a child of the tender age of 9.
Anyways, this book collects the plot of 34 of the 36 shows released before it's cancellation, a guide to becoming a superhero, info on finding a sidekick, the Tick's origin, interviews, and even "Arthurs Section Of Scientific Facts So That This Book Can Legitimately Be Read In School." There is a guide to other superheroes, supervilians (including the Man Eating Cow who just so happens to look like and act like a normal cow), and the list of questions and answers that were often read and replied to at the end of the shows.
This book left me in stitches laughing the first time I read it, and even now it remains one of the funniest books I've ever read. It's not conventional humor, but it remains oh so funny. If you like The Tick and wondered why it was taken off the air, and if you can't get enough of anything Tick, then you need to get this book. This is probably the only book I can read that remains as funny the third and fourth time through as it is the first time... Midnight Bomber Sez: So he says, "You wanna' be a bad guy?" and I says, I says "Yeah baby! Surf's up Space Ponies! I'm making gravy without the lumps! AAAHHHHHAAHHHH!" (note: If you're still searching for your fix of the Tick until the start of the live-action show, check out the Canadian cable station "Teletoon" (Ch. 45). They air it weeknights at 9:30 pm.
How keen is that?

A page-turner, indeed.......2006-12-24
Yes, this was a hilarious book. I grew up in Vermont, and while I'm a little young to get all of the references I got enough of them to be thoroughly amused by the story. Anyone with "Vermont Pride" is likely to get a kick out of this book.
Hilarious.......2002-04-22
Mares and Bryan present a hilarious tale involving the small, rural state of Vermont taking on the United States government by seceding from the Union. Great insights and extremely funny humor are laden throughout the book. A must read for all true Vermonters. Beware all "flatlanders".

Book Description
British Cinema of the 90s has been both saluted as a significant cinematic renaissance and derided as the glossiest of a long sequence of false dawns. In either case it has become clear that the terms of discussion have changed considerably with new developments in production leading to a big increase in films being made. A need therefore exists for an overview of the industry in the 1990s as well as an account of the changing images of Britain on the big screen.
Systematically examining all major aspects of British cinema, the contributors deal with box office successes like Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bean, The Full Monty and Trainspotting as well as critically acclaimed films such as Under the Skin and Love is the Devil. Drawing upon a range of experts, the book explores such issues as the role of distribution and exhibition, the Americanization of British film culture, the difficulties of British films in getting theatrical release, Hollywood and Europe, the impact of youth-oriented cinema, the heritage film, and changing representations of sexuality and ethnicity.
This book provides the only up-to-date overview of the 1990s for everyone interested in contemporary British cinema.

Using a hints-before-solutions formula (so you won't accidentally expose something you don't want to), Unofficial Riven: The Sequel to Myst: Strategies and Secrets divulges all of the secrets you'll need to conquer each puzzle and win the game. Rather than splitting the helpful prodding and complete disclosures into separate sections, the book treats each puzzle individually with the advice escalating slowly across each page. The hints are pretty strong and the proximity of the solutions tempting, so you'll want to crack this one with care if you want to preserve the mystery of Riven. You'll find plenty of references to the original Myst story throughout to help you understand the people of Riven. This guide also includes excellent maps of the islands and information on the game's multiple endings.
Book Description
Like the layers of an onion, Riven is slowly revealed through carefully worded hints and tips. For the hopelessly confused, all secrets are finally exposed and a complete path through the game is shown with text and specially drawn maps. Written by a serious Myst-ophile who also brings enjoyable commentary and insight to the pages of this invaluable strategy guide, the book's cover is also specially designed to appeal strongly to the millions of fans who love the world of Myst and Riven. Here is the book Atrus didn't tell you about ...Don't enter the endangered world of the Rivenites without it!

The grey on grey mottled paper was aggrivating. and headache inducing. Don't waste your money!

How I beat Riven.......1999-08-26
THis book is a strategy guide to help mme beat the game. It gives me a lot of strategies and secrets to the game. It also lets me play the game earier. I go through five islands on the game and they all have names. It is a good book. I really enjoy reading it. It is about how to beat the game quicker. The book tis \two books in one. The first book tells me how to beat the game without ben giving me the nswers. The second one does give me the answers and it is easier.
Useful but at times confusing........1999-01-20
I quickly compared this book to a hints and solutions book I have for Myst and there are some things missing. For one, the Myst book had pictures that showed you what was being written about while there are no pictures in Riven. Drawings are provided which are helpful. At times you are expected to get back to locations and start from there with no idea how to get back without help. Even with these shortcomings the book is worthwhile especially for the price.

Customer Reviews:
weLEAD Book Review by the Editor of leadingtoday.org.......2007-06-17
Dr. Alan Zimmerman is a performance consultant who energetically believes in the transforming power of a positive attitude. It is a basic and ancient philosophy that understands we must change our inside before we will be able to change the outside in a positive way. Steven Covey has taught for years that principle-centered leadership must have an "inside/out approach" to life. Dr. Zimmerman has also taught for over twenty years an authoritative message regarding attitude and success.
Pivot is a book that consolidates Zimmerman's experiences and teachings to thousands over many years. As he states in the book's introduction,
"I've noticed that attitude makes a huge difference in determining a person's level of success in life. In fact, attitude seems to make a bigger difference than age, sex, race, education, circumstances or any other factor. Two people can have the same background and face the same situations, but experience very different outcomes. It's all about attitude."
As a book, Pivot covers three important points. These are how to recognize a wrong attitude in yourself, how to develop the right kind of approach to life and situations, and how to maintain a productive attitude. The first three chapters discuss what a "wrong attitude" is and how to recognize it in yourself. Many individuals have harbored negative thoughts and feelings so long they fail to recognize how detrimental they are to personal growth and achievement. Chapters four through seven teach the reader how to develop a positive approach to life and situations. The emphasis here is that even with problems and major obstacles, the positive person is able to stay motivated and "upbeat" with the right viewpoint. Finally, chapters eight and nine reinforce how one can maintain a positive attitude in spite of all obstacles.
Each of the nine chapters in the book presents a single quality or discipline that dovetails nicely with the overall purpose of the book. For example, in chapter 8 entitled "Worry", the author communicates how to overcome the guilt and emotional burden that plagues so many people and stunts their potential. Zimmerman is also not afraid to discuss the importance of spirituality in life and the benefits it offers. This chapter, like many others, also provides exercises or a plan to develop the quality discussed within the chapter.
Pivot is a motivating and inspiring book. Not only does Dr. Zimmerman spice it with many of his own experiences, but you will finish it feeling your life can... and will... be better for having read it. Even if you consider yourself a positive person, the principles and content of Pivot will reinforce and energize your perspective on the world. Heaven knows... we can all use more of that!
Pivot.......2007-03-09
I did not like this book. It was redundant and boring.I would not reccomend it to anyone.
Recycled Information.......2007-02-12
While I don't disgree with pretty much any of the information of ideas presented in this book, I found it to be a pretty simplistic repetition of many of the otehr self-development books I've read in the past few years. That's the "danger" of buying self-development books - for some (new to the ideas), a book like this might be life changing, but for folks who have read dozens of books that may each go into greater detail, the book becomes a quick scan and a bit of a disappointment. That being said, I recently read ANOTHER book that I thought consolidated much of the current research on personal change ("This Year, I will..." Ryan), and bought multiple copies to give to friends. That book took the researcch and put a different or more focused spin on the ideas.
Get an attitude adjustment........2007-01-14
A valuable entry into the realm of "positive psychology," this commendable book offers an engaging look at the power of a positive attitude.
Although the book looks like the typical self-help hardback, it is really also a workbook in disguise. Each chapter has a discussion of the issues most relevant to developing self-affirming, enthusiastic attitudes that lead to success in any endeavor. There are numerous apt examples, quotations and stories as well as many references to other authors, teachers and philosophers from over millennia whose works have offered the same critical message as Dr. Zimmerman. Each chapter has not only a description of what to do and why, but also -- and this is where it is revealed that the book is really a workbook -- exercises at the end to allow the reader to put new knowledge into practice.
What I liked best, though, is the author's upbeat treatment of his subject. I found myself chuckling at his humor throughout the book. There is a laugh to be had on every second page. He has an excellent teaching style -- a reader is more likely to remember and learn from something that also entertains.
Dr. Zimmerman's instructions are solid. He is simple, clear and precise about what is important to consider and what is important to do. And however simple the suggestions seem, they are what many psychotherapists tell their clients to try. People who've tried them tell me they work very well.
Helpful!.......2006-11-05
This is the kind of book you can read over and over. Helps you to understand yourself and your feelings. I have recommended this book to several people. It would make a great gift to someone you care about.
Book Description
An elegant, witty, frank, touching, and deeply personal account of the loves both great and fleeting in the life of one of America's most celebrated and fabled women.
Born to great wealth yet kept a virtual prisoner by the custody battle that raged between her proper aunt and her self-absorbed, beautiful mother, Gloria Vanderbilt grew up in a special world. Stunningly beautiful herself, yet insecure and with a touch of wildness, she set out at a very early age to find romance. And find it she did. There were love affairs with Howard Hughes, Bill Paley, and Frank Sinatra, to name a few, and one-night stands, which she writes about with delicacy and humor, including one with the young Marlon Brando. There were marriages to men as diverse as Pat De Cicco, who abused her; the legendary conductor Leopold Stokowski, who kept his innermost secrets from her; film director Sidney Lumet; and finally writer Wyatt Cooper, the love of her life.
Now, in an irresistible memoir that is at once ruthlessly forthright, supremely stylish, full of fascinating details, and deeply touching, Gloria Vanderbilt writes at last about the subject on which she has hitherto been silent: the men in her life, why she loved them, and what each affair or marriage meant to her. This is the candid and captivating account of a life that has kept gossip writers speculating for years, as well as Gloria's own intimate description of growing up, living, marrying, and loving in the glare of the limelight and becoming, despite a family as famous and wealthy as America has ever produced, not only her own person but an artist, a designer, a businesswoman, and a writer of rare distinction.
Customer Reviews:
Who is the real Gloria?.......2007-09-24
This book lacks depth and leaves the reader feeling that we still don't know Gloria Vanderbilt. Also, why does she give the impression that she only has one living son? What kind of mother would disregard her two older children? Very sad.
A much better book on the Vanderbilts is "Fortunes Children". I recommend it.
Unattainable.......2006-08-28
I never received this book. A notice was sent to me saying the book was unattainable at this time.
I would give it 3.5 actually.......2006-08-12
The book was much shorter than I thought, and the writing was a bit too scattered, too many side notes - but good. I would average it out to be a 3.5 and you will find it funny, interesting if you know the characters or have read much about them. When you think of them as people it becomes harder to grasp, but characters seems a more realistic yardstick to use. I love Gloria Vanderbilt, I admire her and feel that she deserves applause and praise, but this one didn't do it for me. Maybe a good book to take traveling.
Thank you for this wonderful book!!.......2006-05-25
Dear Gloria Vanderbilt, i am enjoying reading your wonderful book. Thank you!! sincerely,
Joan Clement
Mind Candy... .......2006-03-30
I wanted this book after reading a commentary by Vanderbilt's son, Anderson Cooper. He was reflecting on how we adults never really like to think about, let alone read about our parents sex lives and his mother asked him to proofread her romance memoir. He played up the more racy parts of the book, which turned out to be the only racy parts of the book.
This book is not so much about romance, as it is about a woman finding he own way in the world. Gloria Vanderbilt was, of course, born rich and influential. She ran with the young and beautiful of Hollywood's golden age. She also struggled between being the proper young lady her controlling aunt expected and her desire to be noticed by her self-absorbed and very troubled mother.
It is not long or terrible complicated, but it is more moving than I had expected.
Book Description
The techniques of European warfare were transformed during the 15th and 16th centuries by the use of gunpowder and by substantial progress in the effectiveness and destructive power of artillery. The series of conflicts in the 1640s, known collectively as the English Civil War, was the first in the British Isles that reflected this new reality. Sieges that aimed at isolating and reducing fortified places became the dominant instrument for prosecuting the war and protective fortifications were vital, for both the besieged as well as the besieger. This title describes how both the Parliamentarians and the Royalists made use of new fortification techniques throughout the course of this conflict.

Book Description
This extraordinary book is both a richly textured portrait of New Haven, Connecticut, and the story of the rise and fall of American cities. Douglas Rae depicts the reasons for urban decline, explains why government spending has failed to restore urban vitality, and offers suggestions to enhance city life in the future.
“A terrific read, moving seductively from the minutiae of neighborhood history to grand global forces.”—Robert Putnam, author of Bowling Alone
“An extraordinarily detailed study of New Haven, tracing the city’s rise in the early part of the 20th century and its fall in the second half—an almost archetypal tale of the American city.”—Edward Rothstein, New York Times
“For anyone with the slightest interest in cities, this book is that rare combination: a must-read volume that you can’t put down.”—Planning Magazine
“[Rae] has provided the blueprint for the next generation of thinkers and city dwellers who debate the future of urban America. . . . A tour de force of research.”—Paul Bass, New Haven Advocate
Customer Reviews:
a case study of a city's rise and fall.......2005-08-10
Many books have been written about the decline of American cities- but I have found none quite like this one.
Rae's book is not an abstract set of generalizations, but a case study of one city: New Haven, Connecticut.
The first half of the book begins by talking about the rise of New Haven. At the start of the 19th century, New Haven was just one of many small towns in south central Connecticut. But by 1910 it was an industrial powerhouse with 80% of the region's population. What went right?
Once railroads were invented in the early 19th century, intercity (between cities) transportation became much easier - but at the same time, intracity transportation was still cumbersome. So industry was centralized in a few downtowns, and most people lived within a mile of their work. And cheap energy (through coal and steam) benefited port cities which, like New Haven, lacked the power of falling water and thus did not have a large mill industry. Moreover, coal (unlike modern electricity) was also easier to transport between downtowns than within cities. So labor and capital were centralized in New Haven, which by 1910 was a crime-free, bustling, very urban place.
New Haven stopped growing as early as the 1920s, and started to shrink in the 1950s. What went wrong?
Rae lists a variety of factors- some that were beyond the control of any politician, and some that could have been controlled through more enlightened public policy.
In the first category, Rae mentions the rise of the automobile (which decentralized regions by making transportation within a region easier) and the rise of the electric power grid (which allowed cheap energy to go beyond regional cores). Television decimated the city's volunteer civic organizations, and national centralization of industry meant that local groceries were supplanted by regional supermarkets and New Haven's industries were bought by corporations headquartered in other cities and often moved around the country or around the globe.
In the second category, Rae criticizes highways that encouraged movement to suburbia, public housing projects that anchored low-skill people in urban cores that were losing low-skill manufacturing jobs, zoning that discouraged retail outside of a few commercial streets, New Deal housing agencies that discouraged investment in urban working-class neighborhoods, and urban renewal projects that bulldozed those neighborhoods in the 1950s and 1960s to build more highways and housing projects.
Was sprawl inevitable? Given the wide range of factors cited by Rae, some sprawl was inevitable- but the disastrous decline of New Haven probably wasn't.
Exceptional and Entertaining.......2004-01-08
I found this to be an absorbing, detailed, and provocative political and social history of New Haven, with lessons and delightful insights for those interested in the future of our cities, suburbs, and communities. Only a well-respected Yale political scientist like Doug Rae, with the sophistication of someone who has experienced firsthand how policy and implementation collide, could have written as entertaining and perceptive a history. The book is an immense public service, and required reading for those interested in urban planning, redevelopment, and public policy. I enjoyed it thoroughly!
Tour de force shatters urban legends.......2003-10-31
Rae spins a story like a novelist, but this book is really a tour de force, assembling an impressive amount of data to explain how well-intentioned urban planning policies failed, and how America lost its sense of what creates livable cities. It's a terrific read for anyone interested in the tale of American urban evolution in the twentieth century, and a must-read for those involved in urban planning, public policy and politics.
Simply the best book on cities........2003-10-16
This book chronicles the rich urban life of New Haven, CT, and the forces that brought about its decline in the postwar period. It dissects the misplaced theories underpinning the urban renewal movement and details the disastrous effects that these policies had on New Haven. While the book focuses on New Haven, the discussion is pertinent to urban renewal projects in dozens of US cities, and is of interest to anyone interested in the decline, and possible rebirth of urban life. One unique characteristic of this book is the quality of the writing: witty, insightful. Despite being a scholarly book, it reads like a novel. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in cities.

Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Wonderful.......2005-06-18
The fact that this book is so richly illustrated is amazing. The images were printed, using slides of photos that the Craighead brothers took over 60 years ago, yet they are absolutely beautiful. (a testament to the legitimacy of their involvement with National Geographic)
The experience of reading this book is truly like tagging along on the adventure vacation of a lifetime. You will yearn for time in India, and for time with enthusiastic naturalists.
If you're in need of a cheap vacation... buy this book.
Life With an Indian Prince.......2003-11-01
This is the best book I've ever read! It's the next best thing to time travel. The Craigheads were invited to visit India as the special guest of a Maharaja's brother, with National Geographic footing the bill. They kept daily logs of their, thoughts, experiences, observations and political debates as they traveled to and from India by ship, just before the US entered World War II. The Craigheads were young collage students who were defining the state of the art in wildlife photography. They experience falconry in India a level that is no longer possible, hunt with Cheetah and attend a lavish royal wedding.
