4 out of 5 stars More Epic, less episodic.......2004-08-23

Up to this point, the manga have maintained the larger arc of the Ogami-Yagyu feud in the background -- now the creative team focuses more on the feud. Here we get Ogami in an intense showdown with the Yagyu forces -- with strong ramifications. Daigoro is separated from his father and takes the spotlight for the greater part of this volume.

Fans of the film may note that Baby Cart in Peril (#4) has important material from this volume.

5 out of 5 stars Father and Son Take Different Paths On The Assassin's Road.......2003-05-18

At last, the true depths of the treacherous Retsudo Yagyu's obsession with Ogami Itto are explored, as he unleashes the dogs of war on the Father & Son. As you can see from the cover, with Frank Miller's stunning rendition of a Wolf and it's Cub standing atop a mountain of bodies, this book features a MAJOR battle scene, as Ogami and Daigoro face a seemingly endless horde of Yagyu's forces. The body count is high, but the true cost of the battle is more personal: Lone Wolf is seperated from his Cub. After the stunning battle between Ogami and Retsudo Yagyu himself, I was wondering how the series could possibly get any better. The stories featuring Daigoro on his own showed me exactly how. Great action, even greater characterization, superb writing and art.....Each volume is better than the previous one, and there are still 18 left!

5 out of 5 stars Ogami Itto and Daigoro are separated on the Assassin's Road.......2002-11-08

In the last two stories of Volume 9 of Long Wolf and Cub the manga epic set up what we assumed would be a significant story line regarding Ogami Itto's theft of a secret communiqué from the Yagyu. However, this turns out to be something of a feint by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, for there is indeed a major development in Volume 10 "Hostage Child." The title is not exactly one of the give stories collected in this volume, but does represent a more literal meaning for the final story, "Straw Boy":

      (50) "The Yagyu Letter" offers up the initial conflict between Ogami Itto and the forces call together by Retsudo Yagyu, beginning with the Kurokuwa. If their swords fail, then there are archers and rifleman to finish off Lone Wolf and Cub.

      (51) "The Tears of Daigoro" reveals the subterfuge with the reader as we are finally offered a mano-e-mano duel between Ogami Itto and Retsudo Yagyu. However, the duel quickly becomes irrelevant as we learn what we should have suspected: that Daigoro cannot possibly hold on to his father's shoulders during every single fight. But Daigoro does more than fall down; he becomes separate from his father in what may well prove to be one of the most significant developments in the saga. The rest of the story become Daigoro's adventure as an unusual father and son living alone in the forest try to provide protection from the Yagyu assassins searching for the boy.

      (52) "The Fisherwoman's Love" has Daigoro stumbling upon fishermen working a river. Even though he is offered something to eat, the boy who has never learned to accept the kindness of strangers must remain true to the code he has learned from observing his father. But while Daigoro learns to fend for himself after a fashion, there is one in the small village who not only recognizes the shishogan in the boy's eyes but also fears what it means.

      (53) "Drifting Shadows" returns the focus to Ogami Itto, who has begun to follow the path of Daigoro and who has the chance to continue his duel with Retsduo Yagyu. The duel has a surprising resolution of sorts, that only adds to the emnity between the pair.

      (54) "Straw Boy" is the most heart-rending tale to this point in the epic, which certainly says something. Daigoro is now at the point of starvation and finally comes to the end of his strength and lies down beneath a tree to die. As he lays there traveler after traveler sits under the tree's shade as well, all of them ignoring the dying child. But then two men come alone and hide in the tree, waiting to free their gang leader being transported to jail. Recognizing something in the boy's eye, the gang leader plans to use Daigoro as a "straw boy," which is to say, a hostage if they are trapped by the police.

The fun at this point is how long the separation of Lone Wolf and Cub will continue. It is, of course, foolishness to even hazard a guess and at the rate of one story per evening at bedtime, I can look forward to prolonging this major act of the epic for some time to come and continue to appreciate the irony that some of the best stories in this tale of father and son on the Assassinýs Road are about Daigoro alone.

4 out of 5 stars "Lone Wolf and Cub" starts to pick up steam!.......2001-08-07

The saga of Lone Wolf and Cub starts to move dramatically in this tenth volume in the series. Assassin-for-hire Ogami Itto (Lone Wolf) and his son Daigoro (Cub) end up being hunted down by Ogami's former masters, leading to some spectacular action sequences and stunning twists that will by quite interesting to see develop in future volumes. For a nearly 30 year old series, the artwork is beautifully done (the action sequences are large and striking to look at) and the story is well done, keeping a solid tension throughout. For Japanese comic fans and samurai epics, this is one series worth checking out.

        Book Description

In this illuminating and provocative survey, Stephen Barber examines the historical relationship between film and the urban landscape. Projected Cities looks with particular focus at the cinema of Europe and Japan, two closely linked cinematic cultures which have been foremost in the use of urban imagery, to reveal elements of culture, architecture and history. By examining this imagery, especially at moments of turmoil and experimentation, the author reveals how cinema has used images of cities to influence our perception of everything from history to the human body, and how cinematic images of cities have been fundamental to the ways in which the city has been imagined, formulated and remembered. The book goes on to assess the impact of media culture on the status of film and cinema spaces, and concludes by considering digital renderings of the modern city. Projected Cities will appeal to all readers engaged with the city, film and contemporary culture.

          4 out of 5 stars RPG.......2007-09-03

The excellent and very different Mage game, with its unique magic
setting, and the opposing forces and sides here at times made you feel
if you had fallen into the Illuminati books, or a Jerry Cornelius tale.

A truly eerie and odd setting, so well done for a very different magic using game. Nice work.

5 out of 5 stars This is what the game always should have been.......2000-12-20

Forget Revised, this is what the game is really about. A generic setting in which you can launch a game in any time, any where, with any who. The revisions made from visionary-but-glitchy First edition make it much clearer and smoother to run.

Has everything you need to start an Ascension War chronicle (whether you want to get involved in the War or not is another matter), including details on the Technocracy, governments, secret organisations, the Umbra, the Digital Web, and a little on history.

Magick is appropriately powerful, and the game flows much more than the "crunchier" games like Vampire or Werewolf. It's a harder game than those, requiring more in the way of maturity and intelligence, but far more rewarding. And you don't have to play some kind of freaky monster.

3 out of 5 stars This book should have been smaller.......2000-03-31

I think that the author of this book really streched for material. He also added to much artwork. The up side to this book is the fact that it adds a little finess to mage.

Praise for The Book of Leadership Wisdom

"For anyone who seeks to understand the nature of effective leadership, in all its many dimensions, this volume will prove invaluable." -Bob Wright President and Chief Executive Officer, NBC

Pearls from The Book of Leadership Wisdom

"You must capture and keep the heart of the original and supremely able man before his brain can do its best." -Andrew Carnegie

"There's an old proverb that says: 'If you are planning for one year, plant rice. If you are planning for 10 years, plant trees. If you are planning for 100 years, plant people.' To that I would add . . . plant them, but don't forget to move them around every seven to ten years. New eyes give rise to new ideas and opportunities." -Michael Eisner

"You must realize that it is more than money that the men want, it is a sense of ownership." -William Cooper Procter

"You can manage inventory, you can manage things, but you must lead people if you want to tap their full potential." -Ross Perot

          T. Coleman du Pont, Andrew Carnegie, J. Paul Getty, A. Montgomery Ward, Thomas J. Watson, Jr., Akio Morita, Jack Welch, David Packard, Ray Kroc, Bill Gates . . . they are among the most respected and influential business leaders of all time. Possessing a rare combination of business genius and true grit, these captains of industry have created unprecedented wealth for their companies and themselves, pioneered revolutionary new industries, and, in some cases, directly shaped the destinies of entire nations. Now, The Book of Leadership Wisdom affords you an unprecedented opportunity to hear, in their own words, what these immortals have had to say on the topic of leadership.

The Book of Leadership Wisdom brings together the essays and speeches of more than 50 business legends, past and present. Never before have the writings of such a large and diverse group of legendary business leaders been collected between the covers of a book. From leading change to dealing with adversity, creating vision to inspiring employees, the writings contained in this book span the whole range of essential leadership issues. For instance, you'll hear from Harold Geneen on the difference between leading and commanding, Daniel Guggenheim and William Cooper Procter on the advantages of a democratic workplace, Katherine Graham on the importance of credibility, Jack Welch and Ross Perot on leading in adversity, Ray Kroc on self-appraisal, and Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield on value-based leadership, to name just a few.

For easy reference, the 52 essays contained in The Book of Leadership Wisdom are organized into eight categories covering leadership qualities, dealing with adversity, visions of progress, labor relations, company culture, habits and idiosyncrasies, motivating employees, and leading change. Each essay is preceded by a brief introduction that places it in historical perspective and offers interesting and insightful information about its author's life and career. And throughout each essay, passages have been highlighted that call attention to each contributor's most pithy, profound, or quirky ideas.

Offering timeless wisdom from the most successful business leaders ever, The Book of Leadership Wisdom is must reading for managers at every level, from the junior executive cubicle to the presidential suite.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This book doesn't try to tell l you what to do, but what had been done before.......2006-03-04

What does it take to be a successful business leader? This book, edited by Peter Krauss, is filled with classic writings by legendary business leaders. Also in this book, the reader will find, behind the inspirational phrases and classic pieces of advice, the stories and examples that will inspire, and turn advice into action. This book is not so much focused on telling one must be done, but focuses on showing what has and can be done.
For example, in the late 1800's, National Cash Register's John H. Patterson was in trouble. He was trying to sell a product that everyone resented: the cash register. Why pay for a machine that double-checks the clerk's competency and honesty? Nobody wanted these "thief-catchers" in their stores. No way.
Today, no store is without a cash register. This is a tribute to Patterson's great leadership skills. Patterson was a genius at convincing others to accept his new ideas and motivate a sales force to sell those ideas.
Another example is offered from ITT's Harold Geneen. Geneen argues that if a leader has to pull rank, the leader is not a leader. He believed that one must be able to inspire hard work and creativity without resorting to commands.
          J. Paul Getty points out those true leaders know how to battle an inevitable crisis. He adds that leaders love to be challenged.
From Levi Strauss's Robert Haas, the reader learns that great leaders must have a deep set of core values and principles. These leaders must not only have them but effectively communicate these beliefs and principles. Best leaders can find ethical solutions to deep conflicts because of a strong belief and principle structure. Learn how Haas had to deal with child labor at a time when child labor was critical debate.
This book is full of examples on each page. The reader will see some of the challenges that have faced some of the best known firms, and the great leaders that navigated those treacherous waters, and survived to write about it.

          5 out of 5 stars 51 Invaluable Perspectives.......2000-11-05

Peter Krass has edited the Wisdom Series series which includes this volume. Each anthologizes brief essays by different "icons of business." A brief bio of each author precedes her or his essay. In the Introduction, Krass asserts that "Among these various characters, in fact, the general consensus is that leaders are made, not born. The mythology of some mystical ability that surrounds these leaders is just that -- myth. As to the question: What makes a leader? The answer is here" in the 51 essays which he organizes within the following framework:

          Part I: The Necessary Qualities

          Part II: Dealing with Adversity

          Part III: Visions of Progress

Part IV: Evolving Perspectives on Labor

          Part V: Company Culture

          Part VI: Habits and Idosyncracies

          Part VII: Motivators and Mentors

          Part VIII: Leading Revolution

[NOTE: Gary Hamel has written a truly brilliant book entitled Leading the Revolution. Compare and contrast his ideas with those expressed by Bossidy, Galvin, Vernon, Watson, Jr., Eisner, Wachner, Marriott, Jr., and Henry Ford in Part VIII.]

Of the 51 essays, the ones I found most valuable include all of those in Part VIII; also, others earlier in the volume such as "The Real Essence of Business" (Roberto C. Goizueta), "Roving Leadership" (Max DePree), "A View from Olympus" (Bill Gates), "American and Japanese Styles" (Akio Morita), "In the Public Eye" (Susan L. Kurtzig), and "Are You a Job-Holder or a Results-Getter?" (T. Coleman du Pont. A wide range of individuals discuss an even wider range of business issues. My suggestion is to select a topic or two of greatest interest and dive in. Because business circumstances can so often change so rapidly and (sometimes) unexpectedly, what you learn from what you read today may well help you to prepare more effectively for an uncertain future in which a new peril or opportunity emerges. Moreover, my guess is that there will be several other essays in this book to help you then, also.

I have also reviewed most of the other volumes in this series and recommend each of them highly.

5 out of 5 stars An Indispensible Resource for the Perpetual Learner.......2000-03-26

This should be on every leader's or "wanna-be" leader's desk. Written by some of our past century's most effective leaders and edited to provide "side-bars" for the most important points in each of their articles, this book provides a much-needed tool. I have used it to draw on for speeches, research papers, and debate points. I first checked it out from the library to see if the content was worth buying - and I immediately ordered it! This definitely provides food for thought and inspiration. It includes not only the actual articles written by the leaders, but also a one-page profile/background on each.

          Book Description

Dark Midnight When I Rise tells the story of a troupe of young ex-slaves and freedmen whose odyssey from cotton field and auction block to concert stage and throne room is one of the most remarkable trajectories in American history. Singing the sacred hymns of their ancestors, the Fisk Jubilee Singers introduced the world to African American music. They enchanted such luminaries as Ulysses S. Grant, Frederick Douglass, Mark Twain, Queen Victoria, and Prime Minister William Gladstone, and demonstrated to millions of white Americans and Europeans the courage, dignity, and intelligence of African Americans.

The Jubilees set out in the fall of 1871 to raise money for Nashville's nearly bankrupt Fisk University, one of many black schools established after the Civil War to teach reading and writing to the tens of thousands of emancipated slaves who clamored for an education. Ejected from hotels and railroad cars, shivering in the winter cold, the bedraggled singers performed along the route of the old Underground Railway to Brooklyn, where, a few days before Christmas, they sang for Henry Ward Beecher's Plymouth Church congregation. They caused such a sensation that soon they were raising thousands of dollars a week performing to overflow audiences up and down the Eastern Seaboard. After tours of Great Britain, Holland, Switzerland, and Germany, they not only rescued Fisk but built it into one of the nation's preeminent African American institutions of higher learning.

The Jubilees introduced scores of spirituals, from "Steal Away" to "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," with such soulful artistry they moved throngs to tears. But their contribution extended beyond their music. Forced to do daily battle with American racism in the dark midnight of Reconstruction, they bravely denounced segregation from choir lofts and concert stages, forcing the issue of discrimination onto the world's front pages. In their wake, Northern hotels, railroads, and schools opened their doors to blacks.

Their success came at great cost. The eloquent Benjamin Holmes, who had taught himself to read as a slave, died of tuberculosis. Pious Julia Jackson, who as a small girl had helped her relatives escape from bondage, suffered a paralytic stroke. Frail, stalwart Ella Sheppard, the matriarch of the Jubilees, nearly died of pneumonia after seven years of unceasing toil. As they struggled to overcome exploitation and prejudice, the Jubilees transformed American music forever, foreshadowing the triumphs and travails of thousands of black performers.

Based on the singers' own letters, memoirs, and diaries, Dark Midnight When I Rise is a compelling and deeply moving testament to the inherent decency of all men and women, and the power of art to change the heart of a nation.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent story, mediochrely told.......2001-07-19

As other reviewers have said, the story of the Jubilee Singers is a very fascinating and important one that deserves to be told. Ward's book is well-researched, and includes a lot of detail on background information and concert-by-concert travelogue of the singers. As far as I can find out, this is the only place where you can get a history of the Jubilees in more than a few paragraphs.

However, Ward doesn't tell it very well. The reading gets tedious and slow almost from the very beginning. Ward has a tendency to get sidetracked by tangential information, and his habit of breaking up large quotes between a paragraph and an indented block is annoying. Although he tries to provide personal information, there is very little emotion in the telling of such an emotional story.

Another thing--if you are expecting, as I was, a study of the Jubilees' music, you will be disappointed. Ward states in the introduction that he is not a musicologist and his intent is not to chronicle the history or influence of slave music. He is true to his word. Very little is said about the actual music, except that it had the power to move audiences. Finally, after 400 pages, he talks about the Jubilees' influence on later music for a page or two. But this is the story of the singers, not the music, and their struggle to present their heritage in song and to preserve their school.

5 out of 5 stars This Son of Fisk is Forever on the Alter.......2000-09-03

Once again the influence of African-American Culture takes center stage in the cultural development of America. It was these young and very naive band of singers, that forever altered the course of music in America. Bringing to the world, a genre of music that was(is) able to hold the audience in complete awe. This story chronicles each members humble beginnings, a story that brings to light the triumph of the human spirit and the unfailing resolve of African-Americans "to make a way out of no way"

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring piece of history.......2000-05-02

This story of the Jubilee Singers and Fisk University is an important part of history, for both blacks and whites. Also recommended for children is A BAND OF ANGELS, a Story Inspired by the Jubilee Singers, by Deborah Hopkinson, illustrated by Raul Colon.

              Book Description

It is often said that a woman must do a job twice as well as a man in order to get half the credit. This is particularly true of women in law enforcement. Women have been involved in various forms of policing for the last 100 years, but it wasn't until the Equal Employment Act of 1970 that women could move from the job of meter maids to patrol and detective work. Yet less than 1% of all top-level cops are women, and there remain significant obstacles in the career paths of women in the force. This book looks at the history of women police officers and provides first-hand accounts of women at every level, including those who drop out. It addresses discrimination, competition, lack of mentoring, differential treatment, and sexual harrassment. It looks at what plays into the decision to stick it out or leave that many policewomen face. It also considers the family issues these women return home to at the end of the day. Unlike other treatments of the subject, Alt and Wells show how women have changed police work into a more community-oriented model of policing, reduced police violence, served as a strong force to promote a more effective response to domestic violence within police departments, and helped with community-police relations. With a combination of first-hand accounts, careful research, and lively analysis, the authors are able to convey the actual experiences of women who have made their careers behind the shield.

              Book Description

Designed to look like toys, green parrots are small, winged cylinders roughly four inches long that flutter over lands devastated by war, but are, in fact, antipersonnel mines. This book introduces us to the endless destruction that the green parrots have spread throughout the world, and in so doing raises an urgent question: Is it legitimate to accept war as an inevitable prospect for current and future generations? After appearing in numerous languages since its initial publication in 1999, this English edition is particularly timely. The appendix of Green Parrots contains the complete text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, approved on December 10, 1948 by the General Assembly of the United Nations, which begins by proclaiming: "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights."

"Green Parrots: A War Surgeon's Diary" is a remarkable book with frank reality coming from a true humanitiarian.

Dr. Gino Strada has been been helping victims of war, 90% civilians, for over seventeen years. His experience has brought him to Afghanistan, Iraq, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Pakistan, Sudan, Cambodia and other countries affected by war. Dr. Strada cuts through the clutter revealing what truely matters.

Government A fights government B with a devastating price being paid by C, Civilians. More than talk or protest, these civilians need real help immediately.

Dr. Strada and his organization EMERGENCY has been offering that help for over ten years but it is still just a drop in the bucket.

Green Parrots is an anaesthetic-free-root-canal into humanity's irrational cruelty and violence and simultaneously and more importantly, it is about profound empathy and the real love countless 'Gods' of this world continuously attempt to take credit for. Green Parrots is about sovereign human conscience driving sovereign human action, collectively of course!"
