Book Description
In five wide-ranging essays, A. David Napier explores the ways in which the foreign becomes literally and metaphorically embodied as a part of cultural identity rather than being seen as something outside it. Pre-classical Greece, Baroque Italy, and Western postmodernism are among the artistic domains Napier considers, while the symbolic terrain ranges from Balinese cosmography to body symbolism in biomedicine.

Not to be missed!.......2004-03-19
This is the second book in what I like to think of as Napier's trilogy. If you have not read Masks Transformation, and Paradox, I recommend reading that one first and then this wonderful book, to be followed by The Age of Immunology: Conceiving a Future in an Alienating World. Napier's work is not light reading. His treatment of the concept of the stranger is relevant to the process he traces out in the first book which deals with the way(s) in which notions of alterity and difference are central to societal rituals of transformation. He says that "the recognition of change hinges both on the apprehension of identity and on the awareness of a potential for paradox." (Myths, 3) In this work he takes that thesis a step further and attempts to prove that this process is universal by examining it in different cultures. In the latest work, he introduces the same ideas but in a brand new context using immunology as a trope. I highly recommend all of Napier's work. Although it is anthropology, don't think that his ideas do not have relevance to other areas of study. I used his book for an analysis of Oscar Wilde's uses of paradox and masks in his dramatic and critical work. Jack Worthing's reference to Lady Bracknell as a Gorgon in "The Importance of Being Earnest" came alive to me after reading Napier's meditations on the apotropaic.
This work brings up crucial questions about how we perceive alterity in our society, no small question. People who enjoy philosophy, mythology, literature, psychology, and of course, anthropology will need to be acquainted with Napier's work. You can start here or buy the whole trilogy as I did. You will not be sad you did.
Excellent.......1998-09-04
Makes an important contribution to the understanding of Indian and Greek art and myth.

The truth about Tartan.......1998-10-14
This profusely illustrated little book is an excellent primer on the history of tartan from Roman times to the present. Of particular value are the illustrations and portraits of how tartan garments were worn in times past. Kilts, for instance, are fairly modern. There are also illustrations of women, who are often neglected in books about tartan. You won't find any myths here. The author is careful to show examples of everything he writes about, from the simple scrap of shepherd's plaid found in a Roman excavation, to the London Jacobite all dressed in tartan knee breaches, weskit, and coat. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the history of this remarkable fabric

Book Description
The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in France were witness to dramatic changes in all aspects of social and cultural life. During this era, a new and modern spirit of critical inquiry arose, a change in ethos that had a major effect on all the arts. French Musical Thought, 1600-1800 is a diverse collection of essays offering new perspectives and insight on musical opinion during one of the most fascinating periods in French history. The essays in this volume, the authors of which include musicologists, historians and literary scholars, illuminate clearly the relationship of critical thought in music to contemporary developments in philosophy, art, literature and politics. In the final analysis, scholars contend that music aesthetics, criticism and theory can be understood only against the backdrop of a dynamic cultural milieu.Contributors: Claude V. Palisca, Jane R. Stevens, Louis E. Auld, Gloria Flaherty, Robert M. Isherwood, Albert Cohen, Barbara Russano Hanning, David Allen Duncan, Charles Dill, Georgia Cowart.

Book Description
The Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator: WWII Pacific Theater game takes the excitement, realism, and challenge of the best-selling Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator to the South Pacific for one of the fiercest air battles of World War II. MICROSOFT COMBAT FLIGHT SIMULATOR: WWII PACIFIC THEATER: INSIDE MOVES provides readers with the insight, tips, and tricks necessary to survive the deadly air combat of the Pacific Theater. The author provides vital details about this combat zone's environment and terrain, aircraft, airfields, and carriers, along with information about combat flight school, how to play the game over a network, and how to customize planes, missions, and scenery. Organized for a variety of skill levels, with quick access information for new users plus tips for experienced players, the book also features memoir-style sidebars full of information about Pacific Theater planes, people, and history for readers who have a special interest in WWII air combat. Key elements of the text even simulate a period document, with maps and intelligence reports used as backgrounds for section openers. As a special bonus, the book includes an "Enemy Order of Battle" foldout that provides identifying diagrams of the key combat aircraft used by both sides of the conflict in the Pacific.

Shootum up!.......2007-01-04
This is my favorite Combat Flight Sim. Considering the graphics technology when this sim was introduced, it is excellent. Scenery is accurate. Aircraft are a little "fuzzy"looking. The ships and carriers need to look more realistic. Combat is fun. In the manual, advice on how to handle dogfights is given by fighter Ace Joe Foss and a few Japenese pilots of the time. Flying this sim enticed me to read Greg "Pappy" Boyingtons book, THE BLACK SHEEP. Carrier landings are challenging. It's a good sim, buy it.
lost in ww 2.......2005-09-30
microsoft puts together a nice game in combat flight simulator fun to play and many options . the book is detailed and has a tremondous information but for ww flight simulators il 2 offers a lot more
If you like CFS2.......2003-09-06
If you enjoy CFS2 or CFS3 this book is worthwhile. The reason I say CFS3 is because this book covers a lot of the basics of flight which can apply to CFS2, 3 or FS2004 for that matter.
This book, along with the CFS2 manual, makes the game / sim wonderful. Without these two resources I would have been lost.
Excellent Reference, few shortcomings........2002-02-21
CFS2: WW II Pacific Theater is a very informative addition to CFS2. I recommend it highly. I have some experience with CFS2 and have studied the tactics and plane specs closely. I found CFS2: WWII Pacific Theater very informative. The author is a pilot and obviously has a great deal of knowledge and insight on the tactics he describes. I only wish chapter 7, Combat Maneuvers and Aerobatics, had more depth. Chapter 5, Takeoffs, Landings and Advanced Flying goes into great depth including several demonstrations of concepts that you can fly through. If the same depth had been given to the Combat Maneuvers chapter the book would have been unbelievable. As it stands the Overhead Attack and High Side Attack merit only one short paragraph. I find these two maneuvers of particular usefulness and the lack of analysis is a letdown.
Another area where the book is somewhat a letdown is in "tweaking" CFS2. The book flatly states you can not fly AI aircraft. This simply is not true - you only have to make a minor modification to add these wonderful aircraft to your inventory. Still the author devotes a good deal of attention to these aircraft and if you choose to fly them you will find good advice in the book. I just wish the author had devoted some time to the tweaks in CFS2.
If you play CFS2 you simply must have this book. Even with it's shortcomings it's well worth the price.
Excellent reference for this game.......2000-11-08
Good graphics and concise writing are key to the quality of this book. The author's knowledge of flying and aerodynamics is obvious. He knows how to teach; his explanations are smart and clear. Excellent reference for anyone who wants to maximize their use of this game.

Customer Reviews:
first and best.......2006-05-14
This, the first of Microsoft's combat flight simulators is the best as far as the basic concept is concerned, and the later two versions would have done better to hew closer to the original concept, and used the technological advances to make improvements within the original framework. In Combat Flight Simulator 2, for instance, much of the scenery is actually inferior, though the ground level scenery around the airfields is somewhat better. Combat Flight Simulator 3 is an actual flop and came out to terrible reviews. Jane's World War 2 fighters is another early combat flight simulator that was very good. If you want to start cheap, this game and Jane's is the way to go. If you want the latest and the best--get UBIsoft's IL2 Sturmovic series of games.

- Prevent and resolve conflict
- Bring out their strongest leadership skills
- Discover methods for professional development
- Work better in teams
Customer Reviews:
Finally..........2006-08-26
The genuine nugget in this book is its use of the Enneagram to move forward the original Center for Creative Leaderhip research about what derails successful professionals. Lapid-Bogna's gift is to communicate the most profound and deeply thoughtful insights with deceptively casual language. I agree it needs to be read twice: Once to understand the techniques it describes, and a second time to appreciate how she builds on her hard-earned understanding of what works and doesn't work in OD and career development. Then, consider reading it a third time to appreciate the Enneagram for the doors it opens to truly deep personal growth. Not just another book written as a practice-building marketing piece for the author. It contains enough material for at least two books.
The most practical enneagram book out there for business applications.......2005-10-03
I love this book. I am an executive coach and I find this very useful for helping my Enneagram-aware clients apply the model directly and quickly to work situations -- to help debug relationships, communications, conflilct, etc.
I especially like Lapid-Bogda's distinctions and examples around "Pinch" and "Crunch" for each of the types.
I don't know of any other books except Michael Goldberg's "The Nine Ways of Working" that fill this business-application niche quite so well.
Highly recommended for those who need a practical, hands-on way of using the Ennegram in day to day work interactions.
Betsy Siwula Brandt, Breakthrough Consulting, Santa Fe, NM .......2005-09-03
Finally a groundbreaking book on the 9 ways of working that can be handed to your HR director! Enneagram Personality System books started being published in the 1980's; not until now has there been one that systematically applies this system to organizations. As an organization development consultant, I have always found the enneagram to be essential to my executive coaching and development. Now, in a practical and most excellent way, Lapid-Bogda applies the system to all key areas of organization life-- including employee feedback, conflict in teams, leadership and team development, etc. You can take the applications and use them immediately on the change initiatives you already have underway in your orgaization-- such as your 360 degree feedback sessions.
Not only does Lapid-Bogda make it easy for you to apply this system, but once familiar with her book and work, the reader can order tailor made tools that go with each organization topic that will further assist your ease of application.
If you are "stuck" in your own personal career development or trying to lead others in theirs-- and looking for a breakthrough-- then buy this book!
A Life Changing Book.......2005-08-20
This book has helped me in ways that I never imagined. The information in this book has been extremely useful in my quest to better understand myself and others. "Bringing Out the Best in Yourself at Work" is very much a must read for anyone interested in improving their relationships at work and in life in general.
Personality Traits in the Business Environment.......2004-09-01
This is a book on using the Enneagram system specifically oriented to todays business environment. The Enneagram is not unlike other personality oriented systems. First an individual is asked to examine nine different personality types and to identify himself with one. Then the Enneagram, a diagram of the interaction of the various types can be used to predict behavior.
The book, however, reverses the normal trend in personality testing books where the book is organized around the personality type. Instead the book describes several common business situations and then describes how the various personality types react to the situation.

Book Description
The man who revolutionized our understanding of intelligence now gives is a pathbreaking view of creativity, along with riveting portraits of seven figures who each reinvented an area of human endeavor. Understanding their diverse achievements not only sheds light on the nature of creativity but also elucidates the "modern-era"--the times that formed them and that they in turn helped to define.
Customer Reviews:
Great Stories, Picked to Fit Gardner's Schema.......2005-02-07
Howard Gardner has changed the way we think about intelligence. His seminal book, Frames of Mind, introduced the idea that the correct question we should be asking is not, "How smart am I?" but rather "How am I smart?"
It was Gardner who first came up with the idea that there are different kinds of intelligence, and that we have differing gifts in all of them. In Creating Minds, he goes beyond the basic concept that he laid out in
Frames of Mind, by looking at creativity through the lens of these multiple intelligences.
What he tries to do is to illuminate how specific creative geniuses in different fields used different intelligences. On the whole, the book works.
Gardner gives us, in brief, the lives of Sigmund Freud, Albert Einstein, Pablo Picasso, Igor Stravinsky,
T. S. Eliot, Martha Graham, and Mahatma Ghandi. In each biography, he talks about their particular gifts, especially their "intelligence," using his own framework. This works very well with some of his subject and not so well with others.
It's easy to get a handle on spatial intelligence with Picasso, and musical intelligence with Stravinsky, and linguistic intelligence with Eliot. It's easy to understand how a dancer like Martha Graham has bodily or physical intelligence. But when we move into some other domains, especially the social, things get a bit murky.
The chapter on Ghandi seems to me to be in the book because it was necessary to complete the range of intelligences that Gardner had described. Part of the problem may be that political creators have to mobilize other human beings and creativity in that domain is sometimes is harder to judge and define than, for example, the ability to conceptualize a sculpture or a set of mathematical equations.
I also wish that Gardner had included some comparisons of other contemporaries in the same field in some of his stories. I would like, for example, to have seen Gandhi set against Hitler. Both were effective at mobilizing people, but they pursued very different ends. Or, perhaps we could have set Gandhi against Franklin Roosevelt or Martin Luther King, Jr.
The biggest problem I had with the book, though, was Gardner's definition of creation as lifetime achievement. I'm not sure I'm comfortable, with the idea that the most creative people are the people who work in the same field throughout a lifetime, and make major contributions there throughout that lifetime. That certainly is one kind of creativity and it's well represented and analyzed in this book.
We learn, for example, that most of the creative people studied by Gardner seem to move through their creative life in stages. They spend a decade or so mastering their domain and then producing great work. Then there's another decade or so spent mastering a new aspect of the domain, followed by more creative output.
We also learn about the need for a circle of people around the creative person who provide both support and stimulation. Many times these are the unsung heroes of the genius' career.
There are some things missing, though. There's no discussion of folks who produce creative work in different fields.
There's a good deal to be said for the idea that someone - such as Linus Pauling, recipient of two Nobel Prizes - who changes fields and makes major contributions in more than one field, is more creative than a person who stays in a single field. There's something to be said for the argument that a person who is effective in many areas, but not of genius caliber in one, is as creative as the one-field genius.
Those kinds of reservations lead me to suggest that this is a much more compelling book as biography than it is as psychology. You can, if you choose, forget all of the material about what constitutes creativity and the reference to the multiple intelligences and read each of the main characters' sketches as a short biography and come away with an insight into that person and his or her creative life that you would not have otherwise.
This is a good and illuminating read. It will stretch your mind and your understanding.
A source of inspiration.......2004-03-07
I look to this book when I think about what to do with my life. Gardner is one of my favorite writers, someone who turned me on to Cognitive Science, and one of the only science authors I've read cover to cover.
Creating Minds.......2003-06-14
This book examines the creative process by reviewing the lives of seven highly creative people. I enjoyed the seven mini-biographies, but the attempts to generalize from them seemed ponderous. Some of Dr. Gardner's generalizations seem overly broad, some don't seem to be universally true even among the seven individuals he studied, and in any case seven cases isn't enough to generalize from with much confidence.
This book reminded me of Eric Erickson's biography of Gandhi, which I read years ago with great interest. Erickson's theories about the life cycle and how it applied to Gandhi's life were more satisfying to me than Gardner's generalizations.
There is an excellent 1955 film (Le Mystere Picasso) that shows time-lapse photography of Picasso's work in progress. The film helped me to feel better about my own frequent revisions when writing. It is available on DVD from a French company, Cinestore.com.
The "Creative Enterprise Writ Large".......2002-11-21
This is one of the most enjoyable as well as one of the most informative books I have read in recent years. I have long admired Gardner's work, especially his research on multiple intelligences which he discusses in other works such as Intelligence Reframed (2000), Frames of Mind (1993), and Multiple Intelligences (also 1993). As Gardner explains in the Preface, this volume" represents both a culmination and a beginning: a culmination in that it brings together my lifelong interests in the phenomena of creativity and the particulars of history; a beginning in that introduces a new approach to the study of human creative endeavors, one that draws on social-scientific as well as humanistic traditions." Specifically, this "new approach" begins with the individual but then focuses both on the particular "domain," or symbol system, in which an individual functions and on the group of individuals, or members of what Gardner calls the "field," who judge the quality of the new work in the domain.
This is the approach he takes when analyzing the lives and achievements of Freud, Einstein, Picasso, Stravinsky, Eliot, Graham, and Gandhi. Throughout the book, Gardner makes brilliant use of both exposition (e.g. analysis, comparison and contrast) and narration (especially when examining causal relationships of special significance) to reveal, explain, and evaluate each of the seven geniuses.
Gardner sets for himself several specific objectives:
* "First, I seek to enter into the worlds that each of the seven figures occupied during the period under investigation -- roughly speaking, the half century from 1885 to 1935."
* "In so doing, I hope to illuminate the nature of their own particular, often peculiar, intellectual capacities, personality configurations, social arrangements, and creative agendas, struggles and accomplishments."
* Also, "I seek conclusions about the nature of the Creative Enterprise writ large. I believe that if we can better understand the breakthroughs achieved by the individuals deliberately drawn from diverse domains, we should be able to tease out the principles that govern creative human activity, wherever it arises."
* Finally, "I seek conclusions about the sparkling, if often troubled, handful of decades that I term `the modern era'...Such a selection [of the seven during the half-century period] allows me to comment not only on [their] particular achievemnents...but also on the times that formed them, and that they in turn helped to define."
Gardner achieves all of these objectives while somehow maintaining a delicate balance between respecting (indeed celebrating) individual genius and explaining the relevance (to each of the seven) of three relationships which are common to them all: the relationship between what he calls the "child" and the "master" throughout human development; the relationship between an individual and the work in which he or she is engaged; and finally, the relationship between the individual and other persons in his or her world.
Of special interest to me is Gardner's acknowledgment that two themes emerged during the course of his research for this book which he had not anticipated when he began. Citing a "confidant" relationship with Fleiss from whom Freud received "sustenance" when he needed it most, Gardner gradually realized that a relationship of this kind, "far from being an isolated case," represents the "norm" among the other six. Besso played much the same role for Einstein, Braque for Picasso, the Diaghilev circle for Stravinsky, Pound for Eliot, Horst for Graham, and Anasyra Sarabhai for Gandhi.
Gardner cites what he calls "the Faustian bargain" as the second theme which emerged unexpectedly during his research. This subject is much too complicated to be summarized in a review such as this. Suffice to note now that inorder to maintain their gifts and continue their work, the seven creators "went through behaviors or practices of a fundamentally superstitious, irrational, or compulsive nature," thereby sacrificing normal relationships with family members and friends. "The kind of bargain may vary, but the tenacity with which it is maintained seems consistent." I intend to keep these two themes in mind when I re-read this extraordinary book.

Pretty interesting though.

Book Description
This memoir ranges far beyond anything else written about these events. Fennell is a keen observer and forceful commentator on virtually every aspect of life as a prisoner and the system under which he is confined. And he goes well beyond that. His interests seem to be limitless and lead him to observations and commentary on just about every facet of the world in which he finds himself. His descriptions and opinions encompass: climate, terrain, flora, fauna, geological history, prevailing winds, the solar system, indigenous people, social mores, government and commercial structures, religion, politics, and, inevitably, the inhumane treatment of prisoners in England's penal system. His essay could be likened to Alexis de Tocqueville's 1830s report on the United States.

Book Description
Rara is a vibrant annual street festival in Haiti, when followers of the Afro-Creole religion called Vodou march loudly into public space to take an active role in politics. Working deftly with highly original ethnographic material, Elizabeth McAlister shows how Rara bands harness the power of Vodou spirits and the recently dead to broadcast coded points of view with historical, gendered, and transnational dimensions.

Facinating book.......2007-04-09
This book was written by someone who obviously lives within the Haitian culture. There are so many gems of information, and so much understanding and love of the people and culture of this mysterious land. By the time I had finished reading it, barriers had been removed. I felt as though I had spent time there, had experienced the Rara bands and danced elbow to elbow with them.
The subject matter is enticing, and the writing is enjoyable. I read this several years ago, and intend to reread it often, to increase my understanding of Haitian culture. Heck, I just want to dance with them again!
Great writing, really terrific research.......2003-03-05
I can't recommend this book highly enough for anyone interested in world music, Afro-Caribbean religion and Haitian culture. Very few academically researched books convey this level of top quality, engaging writing. I couldn't put it down! Rara is a unique, fascinating musical form indigenous to the Caribbean and affiliated with the Haitian peasantry and vodou. It's hard to explain -- a multi-layered, polyphonic music akin to the minimalism of Steve Reich, but much cooler. If you're lucky enough to live in New York or Miami, you can see rara every weekend during the summer in your own city! This book explains the history, culture and significance of the music. And it also includes a CD so you can hear the music for yourself. Highly recommended!

Birding in southern Africa.......2000-03-25
Whether you're new to birding in southern Africa or a serious twitcher desperate to tick that woodward's barbet on your life list, this book certainly warrants the place it occupies on your bookshelf (and in your fieldbag). Hugh Chittenden has called upon top birders and ornithologists to compile a guide to the best birding spots of the subregion. Each chapter is devoted to either a country or provincial region and covers both well known and less-known birding spots in those regions. The authors provide contact details and directions for each birding spot and the details of special species you may see in the area (and when to see them). A checklist of the birds you would encounter at the location also allows you to keep track of what you've seen at your favorite birding spots. This book is a great reference to plan your six-week birding trip around southern Africa or just to satisfy your weekend birding expeditions from the city. I recommend it for locals and for birding enthusiasts from afar.
