Book Description

Unlike traditional art works, installation art has no autonomous existence. It is usually created at the exhibition site, and its essence is spectator participation. Installation art originated as a radical art form presented only at alternative art spaces; its assimilation into mainstream museums and galleries is a relatively recent phenomenon. The move of installation art from the margin to the center of the art world has had far-reaching effects on the works created and on museum practice.

This is the first book-length study of installation art. Julie Reiss concentrates on some of the central figures in its emergence, including artists, critics, and curators. Her primary focus is installations created in New York City--which has a particularly rich history of installation art--beginning in the late 1950s. She takes us from Allan Kaprow's 1950s' environments to examples from minimalism, performance art, and process art to establish installation art1s autonomy as well as its relationship to other movements.

Recent years have seen a surge of interest in the effects of exhibition space, curatorial practice, and institutional context on the spectator. The history of installation art--of all art forms, one of the most defiant of formalist tenets--sheds considerable light on the issues raised by this shift of critical focus from isolated art works to art experienced in a particular context.

5 out of 5 stars Installation Art's New York Roots.......2000-12-09

This book is the first stop for anybody serious about examining the history of Installation art in New York from its beginnings in the late 1950s to the early 1990s. The book provides insightful research and analysis based on multiple points of view: the artist, the curators, and the critics. Intelligent and carefully written, this book is a pleasure for art historians and anybody with an interest in contemporary art.

4 out of 5 stars A crucial subject matter to contemporary art exposed at last.......2000-06-16

What is the place of art in contemporary/post-modern scenario, in the age of globalization and 'institutionalism' of art production we live in? This question has become one of the crucial subject matters to great artists and theorical authors of our time, and Mrs. Reiss appears to have the correct approach on this well-discussed aspect of contemporary art, specially from the early 70's.

5 out of 5 stars High interest activities for students of all ages........1999-06-23

Although the activites in this series are geared to elementary students, they can be adapted and used effectively with any age group. What better way to learn than through hands-on activities? I have used these activites successfully with students in grades 6-8, but must admit that I have enjoyed them every bit as much as my students! If you want your students to have a deeper understanding of and appreciation for Northwest Coast Indian art, then these books are for you. Instead of merely observing art, students will relish the opportunity to create it themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to Native American traditions and art.......1998-10-09

This is a wonderful book for children to learn about Native American traditions and crafts. I first read it in fourth grade, and in ninth grade used the pattern for a button blanket of my own for a Washington State History project!

It has a very accurated background, although it could be even longer, but it's enought to recreate the ancient world.
The book itself is the only thing you need to play, include rules, background, weapons and armours, beasts, npcs and so on.
The most interesant thing I've found is a complete timeline of the most important empires, which documents reasonably well a campaign of your own.

              Book Description

              Published June 2004

Technology Ventures is the first textbook to thoroughly examine a global phenomenon known as “technology entrepreneurship.” Entrepreneurship represents a vital source of change in all facets of society, empowering individuals to seek opportunity where others see insurmountable problems. Technology entrepreneurship is a style of business leadership that involves identifying high-potential, technology-intensive commercial opportunities, gathering resources such as talent and capital, and managing rapid growth and significant risks using principled decision-making skills.

The book integrates the most valuable entrepreneurship and technology management theories from some of the world’s leading scholars and educators. It provides an action-oriented approach through the use of examples, exercises, cases, sample business plans, and recommended sources for more information. This comprehensive collection of concepts and applications provides both students and professionals with the tools necessary for success in starting and growing a technology enterprise. Technology Ventures details the critical differences between scientific ideas and true business opportunities.

              Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good undergraduate textbook.......2006-07-06

Having used this book for graduate instruction for a term, I found the content to often be lighter than I would like for a graduate class. Byers uses it himself for an undergraduate course and in that context, it is probably excellent, five stars. This is especially true given the weak competition represented by the books that it replaces, most notably 'New Venture Creation'.

It has several case studies if you think that method is useful (I remain skeptical) and several video presentations that are at least entertaining and can serve as excellent period pieces.

It appears that the nature of the subject matter continues to require a larger burden on the instructor to collect relevant, timely material appropriate to the audience.

5 out of 5 stars Book review for Technology Ventures.......2005-11-07

This book has it all. It introduces and details all the areas of entrepreneurship, from taking the initial plunge to managing resources, to business organization. It would be a perfect business graduate school textbook if it went into any area with more technicalities, instead of covering a very broad range of subjects. I thought an excellent feature in the book was the case study of a company called AgraQuest offered at the end of each chapter, to illustrate in a real-world example the principles discussed in the chapter. The concepts are all clearly laid out and defined, with numerous real world examples provided for clarification. In addition there is a plethora of graphs and graphics provided. What I liked most about this book is for current it is. It comments on nano- and bio-technology as highly fertile grounds for lucrative technology startups. I reviewed this book for my Creativity and Innovation class, and indeed it contains a chapter (5) specifically devoted to that.
The front cover lists the Twenty Principles for Creating Successful Technology Ventures. While some of these are rather silly or obvious, others are worth taking to heart. The concept that there are many sources of investment capital available to startups is vital, and should be taken to heart. Perhaps the most useful part of the book is the huge lists of information sources in Appendix C, which contains websites covering nearly anything the budding technology entrepreneur would ever want to know. Also included in the appendices are numerous business cases concerning the troubles of real-life companies like Yahoo!, Biodeisel Incorporated, and Danger Inc, the creators of the T-Mobile Sidekick.
In the end, the book takes a very sober, realistic, and comprehensive look at the art of creating and growing a technology venture. I think it was actually written as a textbook for upper-level business classes, but how it has been received by the students and professors I do not know.
The authors are both highly distinguished and knowledgeable both in engineering and in business management and entrepreneurship.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has seriously considered becoming a technology entrepreneur.

5 out of 5 stars THE reference book.......2004-11-03

This book provides real substance and guidance to deploy new technology through entrepreneurial ventures. It is comprehensive and addresses particularly well the technology specific considerations all along the process of going from idea to enterprise. It uses for this a case to illustrate the journey through out its 20 chapters. In addition, it summarizes with 20 concrete principles how to create and grow successful technology ventures. Its attractive layout makes it pleasant to read and study. A great reference, for entrepreneurs, students and professors in the technology domain.

Growing up in rural Wyoming, Mark Spragg learned early to read the stars. At 11 he was instructed to quit dreaming, and he went to work for his father on the land. "I was paid thirty dollars a month, had my own bed in the bunkhouse, and three large, plain meals each day." The ranch is a sprawling place where winter brings months of solitude and summer brings tourists from the real world--city types who want a taste of the outdoors and stare at the author and his family as if they were members of some exotic tribe: "Our guests were New Jersey gas station owners, New York congressmen, Iowa farmers, judges, actors, plumbers, Europeans who had read of Buffalo Bill and Sitting Bull and came to experience the American West, the retired, the just beginning." By the age of 14, he and his younger brother are leading them on camping trips into deep woods. "No one ever asked why we had no televisions, no daily paper. They came for what my brother and I took for granted. They came to live the anachronism that we considered our normal lives."

As Spragg comes to realize the strangeness of his life, he also detects flaws in his own character--a fear of suffering and mortality that first shows itself when he rides a sick horse too hard, until the animal hovers at the brink of death. He knows that if he had faced the possibility of sickness, if he had been brave, this animal would not have declined so quickly. Throughout his life, this inability to face death, this terror of losing the beauty of the world he so passionately witnesses, drives Spragg to distraction.

Where Rivers Change Direction combines a soaring spirituality with a visceral, often stomach-churning attention to detail. It's a book that continually dares the reader to turn away from its pages in an effort to digest the power of its confused emotions and hauntingly spare images (a "moon-fried plain," a stillborn child "baked alive in my mother's body"). Like Peter Matthiessen's The Snow Leopard, Mark Spragg's memoir makes you feel you've been somewhere, you've been out in the depths, and you've come back changed. --Emily White

                Book Description

"I knew the horses as I knew my family...When I was separated from them I felt wrong in the world. When I was separated from them I took no comfort in the sound of the creek. I felt chilled without the heat of them. In the short lulls between rides I leaned against the corrals, watching them roil like some captured pod of smallish whales, multi-colored, snorting at their handicapped buoyancy. When I stepped in among them, they would turn to me, roll their eyes until the whites showed, flick their ears. They were used to the sight and sound of me. I was the boy who straddled their hearts."

If the West had a voice this is how it would sound. Passionate. Unequivocal. In the tradition of Ivan Doig's THIS HOUSE OF SKY, Mark Spragg's stunning collection, WHERE RIVERS CHANGE DIRECTION, renders an unforgettable story of an adolescence spent on the oldest dude ranch in Wyoming-a remote spread on the Shoshone National Forest, the largest block of unfenced wilderness in the lower forty-eight states.

In this sublime and unforgiving landscape, Spragg's distant and mercurial father, his emotionally isolated but resilient mother, his fierce and devoted younger brother Rick, and his mentor, a wry and wise cowboy named John, cleave to one another and to the harsh life they have chosen. Unrelenting winds, pitiless blizzards, muscular rivers--from these elements Spragg divines the universal yearnings for self-reliance, trust, acceptance, and love. WHERE RIVERS CHANGE DIRECTION illuminates the unexpected wisdom and irrevocable truth embedded in the small, but profound dramas of one boy's journey toward manhood.

4 out of 5 stars Loneliness and Abandonment.......2007-10-14

These are two feelings I got from reading this memoir. Life in NW Wyoming is not easy. Days are spent with horses and one's life is taken by horses. In fact, if you love horses this is a great book.

One thing that kept creeping into this book is the distance the author had toward his parents, especially his father. Little but dialogue is written about the father, but he comes across as callous and more worried of turning the boy into a real man. The boy, in turn, writes about his concerns about the man he will become. At times that dragged on too much.

Still, it's wonderful prose written in a manly tone. For rugged cowboys and ranchers it's a perfect read.

5 out of 5 stars So Well Drawn.......2007-08-23

What an unrelentingly gripping series of stories -- life, death, animals, boys, girls, men, women, horses, snakes, water, wind, earth, blood, fire and sky. Mark Spragg's style is a bit like David Hockney doing his photograph collages. He doesn't show you everything, just bits and pieces to make the whole. He lets you put some of the pieces in place. What a style. It's shot through with his own strong character and some compelling scenes of raw Wyoming life. The stories follow an amazing arc that you don't see coming until the last chapter and then you just kind of want to start all over again, and meet the boy that became the man. Beautiful stuff. Look, I'm not really out here trying to sell my book at every corner but the people who told me about Mark Spragg are readers of my book, "Antler Dust." I had three recommendations from "Antler Dust" readers to check out Mark Spragg, mostly because, I believe, of the detailed outdoors action and the fact that my book takes place in a neighboring state, Colorado. I am going to read more Mark Spragg but for others who like him, please also consider Antler Dust.

5 out of 5 stars more than five stars.......2007-07-27

I'd worry about peope who don't hurt themselves laughing while reading Wapiti School. My goodness, these stories are terrific, sometimes tough and bitter, sometimes perfect poetry. Just wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Horses' Hearts .......2007-05-23

Mark Spragg writes beautifully, even poetically, of teenage life in a Wyoming family struggling to make ends meet by catering to "dudes" come West for the seasonal fishing and hunting. His collection of stories is varied, but all are tied to the splendor of unshod love for the land and for the horses he rides through a journey that will steal your heart.

4 out of 5 stars Good writing but I don't "get" where the author's coming from.......2007-05-07

The author writes excellent prose with innumerable well turned phrases and descriptions. The subject matter is primarily his adolescence on a Wyoming dude ranch and hunting guide service that his family, Pennsylvania expatriates, operated in the 1960s, some vignettes from his adult life and descriptions of friends and conditions in windswept Wyoming. The chapters are actually a series of essays rather than a progressive narrative with the ones about life and work on and around his father's ranch, where he essentially lived as a hired hand in the bunkhouse with hardened wranglers from about the age of fourteen, being the most interesting.

I enjoyed the book principally due to the excellent writing and colorful recounting of the author's experiences as a real "cowboy" in an era when most of us male baby boomers only experienced the same thing through ubiquitous western TV shows and movies of the 50s and 60s. It was a life in another era when so many of us grew up in boring suburbia. I recommend it for these reasons.

But maybe I missed something because I never came across any explanation for the author's seeming sense of hurt, isolation, melancholy and general unhappiness that begins, for unstated reasons, during his college years.

This the book to read if you want to learn about the Compromise of 1850. Nevins goes into great detail about the Compromise and the reaction to its passage in the two sections of the country.

                          Book Description

Providing a comprehensive and contemporary examination of the United Nations, the authors use a thematic approach in exploring its role in three core issues in international relations: international peace and security; human rights and humanitarian affairs; and building peace through sustainable development. Historically informed and analytically rich, The United Nations and Changing World Politics: Fourth Edition introduces the reader to the opportunities and limits of the central international organization. The authors bring to bear both extensive practical experience and scholarly depth in assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the UN's performance, as well as providing practical suggestions for improvements. This new edition is revised substantially to take into account recent events, including the aftermath of September 11th, the War in Iraq, and the beginnings of the international criminal court. It is an important resource for students of international relations, peace and war, third world development, and human rights.

                            Book Description

For use as a primary text in Political Science courses on International Organization, International Institutions, Global Governance, or the United Nations. Can also be used as supplementary readings in all of these courses, plus courses in International Relations.

United Nations Politics takes a unique approach that focuses on the politics – that is, the persistent and mostly singular emphasis that all member states place on the pursuit of national political, economic, cultural and ideological interests – of UN affairs.

The project began as an effort to research and write a ten-year-later sequel to The Challenge of Relevance written by Puchala and Coate in 1989. This earlier volume was an assessment of the United Nations and its operations in the late eighties. United Nations Politics builds from a series of some 200 interviews conducted at the UN and in various member-state missions between 2000 and 2005. Among other things , these interviews revealed that the existing English-language literature on the UN fails to take into appropriate account the dynamics and the impacts of the internal and external political contexts within which the UN operates. This book directly addresses this shortcoming in the academic literature.

This was rather informative on the actual workings of the UN. Firstly, how it functions - six principal organs established by the Charter: General Assembly, Security Council, Secretariat, International Court of Justice, Trusteeship Council, Economic and Social Council. Secondly, its attitude towards force and conflict - it will intervene if there is a threat to international peace (Chapter VII); states can only use force for individual or collective self-defence (under Articles 2(4), 51); in practice, general support for national liberation movements and self-determination struggles (Zimbabwee, Namibia); in practice, growing humanitarian intervention since 1991 (Somalia, Rwanda, Bosnia). Thirdly, the means by which it responds to conflict - peacekeeping operations (an ad hoc mechanism - maintaining cessation of hostilities as well as postconflict peacebuilding); sanctions (under Article 41) - versus how it's supposed to - to have armed forces on call (under Article 43); to have an effective Military Staff Committee (under Article 47).

Where it falters is on the actual analysis. It brings up the idea of the self-interest of states limiting the UN (nothing new); and the UN working within an inter-state system instead of superceding it as a supranational government, but does not provide elaboration or explanation. It also brings up the idea of the symbolic role of the UN and the conference of legitimacy to the principles it espouses. Otherwise, this book is prone to sweeping statements and rhetoric about the `fundamental divisions' in the world, the greater variety of problems the UN will face post-Cold War, the need for `streamlining and rationalization within and beyond the UN system'. All general terms - which tell us nothing about what the problems are and how they arise; how they can be solved; what reform should be undertaken, how and why.
