It's MISSING the last page of the original release!.......2006-09-16
Is Jim Davis trying to pull a George Lucas on us? All of these re-released full-color books are missing the final page of the original release books.
This re-release Fifth Book (Takes The Cake) is missing the "Garfield Characters That Didn't Make It" special page that was the final page of the original release.
It would be a shame to have the special comic lost to time. Luckily I have all the originals.
Normally I should give a 1-Star rating to show my displeasure with the missing content of this release. However, I simply can't bring myself to give a poor rating to a Garfield book.
Cronology of Comics.......2004-10-30
Garfield Takes the Cake (#5) contains all daily comics from November 3, 1980 through June 7, 1981. Garfield's Second Tresury contains the color version of all the sunday comics held within #5.
Garfield takes the cake...and eats it too.......2004-03-29
I don't know what it is about Garfield that still gets me to buy his books ever year. I have been a fan since I was in second grade, will be 22 years in September. I think what appeals me to the lazy fat cat is his sharp wit and cynicism. Just like Garfield, I hate Mondays with an immense passion and I love lasagna. One of my personal favorite books in the entire series is "Garfield Takes the Cake", the fifth volume of Garfield comic strips. I loved it when Garfield's grandfather pays Garfield a visit. I thought it was a nice touch. I got to see where Garfield got his looks from. I also loved it when Garfield met Arlene. Talk about oil and water. Arlene is definitely Garfield's equal when she is able to match wits with the fat cat. And I love all the fat jokes Jon makes and Garfield's reaction. The camping expedition is a definite classic Garfield moment. No matter how old I get, I can never get tired of reading Garfield. He is my escape from a crazy world known as reality.
GARFIELD RULES!.......2000-06-24
Garfield is the best! Buy this book and ALL of his other books today cuz he is hilarious and every single one of his books are great!
THIS IS DEFINETLY A MASTERPIECE!.......1997-07-27

They obsess over the nuances of a Douglas Sirk or Ingmar Bergman film; they revel in books such as François Truffaut's Hitchcock; they happily subscribe to the Sundance Channel—they are the rare breed known as cinephiles. Though much has been made of the classic era of cinephilia from the 1950s to the 1970s, Cinephilia documents the latest generation of cinephiles and their use of new technologies. With the advent of home theaters, digital recording devices, online film communities, cinephiles today pursue their dedication to film outside of institutional settings. A radical new history of film culture, Cinephilia breaks new ground for students and scholars alike.

Worst Strategy Guide ever.......2000-07-28
I am in agreement with the first reviewer -- I was extremely disappointed in the quality of this guide, it is very poorly written and ridiculously clumsy. I have purchased other Brady games guides and they were excellent, so I was very surprised they would publish such a lousy guide. I will be much more careful next time, and remember the name of Dan Birlew -- to make sure I don't make the mistake of purchasing anything he has "written." This guide turned me off so much I am hesitant to purchase any guides again. The low quality of this guide resulted in my eventually hating the game.

A mediocre strategy guide at best.......2000-04-06
This strategy guide has pretty decent walkthroughs, as well as helpful arts lists. In particular, the sections on "sparking" are quite helpful. Unfortunately, there are several errata -- some of the command combinations for the arts are incorrect (3 of them, to be precise) -- just this little error caused me a good deal of frustration. Furthermore, there are an excesive number of errors elsewhere -- spelling errors, some of the "spark" charts are completely non-sensical, errors in the item listings on the area maps, incorrect attack powers for several of the arts, etc. I've purchased several other Brady Games strategy guides (Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and Tactics in particular), and I was very impressed with their thoroughness, appearance, and correctness. This strategy guide falls far short of that standard. Not only are there silly errors as stated above, the depth of information is disappointing. There are several aspects of the game only briefly mentioned that I think deserved more attention; in particular, the "roles" and their effects on learning arts, more information on combos (there is virtually no mention of this), and more details on the many factors that go into learning arts. In short, unlike other Brady Games strategy guides, this guide has little to offer above a simple FAQ that could be easily found on the web.

Customer Reviews:
This book rocks!.......2007-02-21
If you are a newbie to real estate investing then you need this book! This book is totally mistitled. it should be titled, everything you need to know to get started investing in real estate. This book covers it all from where and how to locate properties, how to perform due diligence, where to get your funding and how to tell if you are getting a good deal.
After I read this book and started looking for properties, this book saved me from a bad deal with a seminar junkie. I started asking questions of the seller and the deal quickly fell apart as it was obvious the seller was hiding several facts about the property.
If you plan to buy residential and/or small commercial buildings then read this book first. It is an easy read and laid out logically. The author walks you through ample situations and includes lots of real life examples. This book is worth every penny.
Leave the seminar junkies where they sit and find out how to really invest in real estate and start building your emptre today.
Excellent book.......2007-01-04
Impressive book with lots of useful information even after reading a couple dozen real estate investment books. Additionally, I e-mailed the author several times with various questions and he promptly responded with pertinent information.
Weak on content........2006-07-26
I recently purchased this book and managed to read it in a very short time. I found the material to be rather weak. It was mostly a collection of the author's casual opinion packed with tons of statistics. Unfortunately, it appears the stats were added to fill pages rather than used for any in-depth analysis. This was more reminiscent of a quickly written term paper rather than a detailed discussion on the future of the real estate market.
The author could have more simply summed up the book in the following statement: Buy Real Estate on fundamentals (i.e. below market/cash flowing) and hold for the long term to ensure success. Honestly, I didn't really gain any additional insight.
So, save your money, you would be better off regularly reading the Wall Street Journal, the Economist, or perhaps a more scientific real estate journal (there is one produced bi-yearly from the Wharton School at UPENN that is fantastic) for some concise, but worthy information on real estate. By the way, these periodicals are fairly easy reads and you wouldn't feel overwhelmed by the info provided.
A must have for anyone going into--or already in--real estate!!!.......2006-07-25
This book completely opened my eyes to the real estate market. It is such a well written, well thought-out, thorough book. It was the best $16.95 I've ever spent. DO NOT BUY A THING IN THE REAL ESTATE MARKET UNTIL YOU'VE READ THIS BOOK! By reading this book you will basically be able to stand on the shoulders of guy who has many years--decades--of experience in the real estate market. The information in it is priceless.
Has no useful information.......2006-07-10
Real estate is a localized market, but this book is written for a general real estate market. It should focus on one market so that we can understand the analysis and apply it to our own market. Missing many important info when discussing about a market crash such as historical affordability compared to today, historical price reduction, impact of increasing foreclosure, loan origination and percentage (ex. $9 trillion dollars lend out on mortgage in the U.S. 46% are adjustable mortgage. $1 trillion in loan will turn over to the new rate in 2007, another $1 trillion in 2008....etc) Is notice of default and bankruptcy increased lately? How much? What about the impact of oil prices on real estate? What about the new bankrupcy law? any impact?
Sell, rent, then buy back is folly according to the author, but never consider sell, rent, invest in other rising markets, then buy back.
Excellent section on job growth forecast with good web links.

An extraordinary story about Johannaâs involvement in the occult and how she learned to distinguish between the beautiful side of evil and the true way of the Lord.
Customer Reviews:
Gooble-Gobble.............2007-06-28
This book was one of many that heralded the insidious rise of the dreaded "New Age Movement" that never materialized. It's a bit humorous to see the author report as genuine nonsense such as "psychic surgeries", which have been thoroughly debunked. Her credulity is striking and colors the entire book. The 1980's were permeated with similar paranoid and ignorant thinking ("subliminal advertising"?, "backward masking"?) A better purchase would be Michael Shermer's "Why People Believe Weird Things"!
Dreadful beyond measure.......2007-05-15
This is awful.
As bad as the thoroughly debunked Johnny Todd, "Dr. Rebecca Brown" (see http://www.answersDOTorg/satan/brown.html - for more on this), Mike "Satan Seller" Warnke, etc.
This kind of material is unsourced, undocumented, and simply UNTRUE.
This is pure, crass sensationalism, akin to the "Satanic Panic" of the early 1980's. You remember that; where every day care center in America was engaging in "Satanic ritual abuse"? The only problem was that those stories were found to be untrue.
As Christians, we are held to a higher standard, which includes telling the truth. To do anything less is to drag the name of Jesus through the mud.
This book and others like it show a lack of knowledge of both the occult and of solid, orthodox Christian theology. And as such, works such as this are not of any more value than a trashy romance novel. In fact, this is worse, because it purports itself to be telling the truth when in fact, it is not. And this is done "all in the name of Jesus", which makes Him out as a liar and His followers out as fools in the eyes of those who read this stuff, and do the research to debunk its claims.
By the way, I'm now an Orthodox/Reformation/Calvinist minister. Sadly, I used to buy this stuff too. Then I grew up and started to research things like this to find out if they were true. Blame it on my college education at a major research University, where we were forced to adequately and accurately defend our positions with documentary evidence, NOT wild speculation and clever fiction.
Blame it on my wanting to defend the honor and integrity of my Lord from those who claim to speak in His name, but are not telling the truth.
I wish I could give this book negative stars, but Amazon does not give me the option to do so.
Do yourself a favor, avoid this, and perhaps try a book on Systematic Theology instead.
Book Purchase.......2007-04-06
I purchased the book The Beautiful Side of Evil by Johanna Michaelsen for a customer (as I run a bookstore). The book came with damage on the front cover. It was not extreme and my customer decided to pay for the book anyway. The book was sent in a timely manner.
I was there myself........2007-03-06
It has been a few years, but suffice it to say that I am hoping to write a book that may end up being a sequel to hers. I came on the scene of Pachita's environment in maybe a month after Joanna was gone. I found this out right after she had written the book. When I read the book I was amazed at the sychronization of our experiences, and having the same end result, because I was a true Christian by the time of the reading. My testimony is long, but I had the privelege of seeking God through every valley where truth was held captive, persevering in my search (since I was seven years old) compelled by the mystery of His Love "that never fails," and an idea that if I sought the Truth I would find HIM. Since I came to Christ at 33 - in 1982, I have continued the search to find the body of Christ, and intercession and seeking have kept me through all I have had to grow through and into. A truly amazing dimension that so many are being held back from. "They would not enter, neither would they allow those that would enter, to enter."
"Seek me and you will find me."
Great book!!!.......2007-01-27
Absolutely fascinating account of a journey through the world of the occult. Highly recommended!!!

Ever wonder if demons & the occult are for real? This woman, now a Christian, tells of first-hand experiences -and how to escape.......2006-08-25
Johanna Michaelson's book, "The Beautiful Side of Evil," is one of only three books that I would consider a "classic" book regarding "Angels" and "Out of Body Experiences." ("Murdered Heiress, Living Witness" by Dr. Petti Wagner, and "Angels on Assignment" by Roland Buck, of the famous Buck knife family, are the other two.)
About the first 90% of Michaelson's book is one fast-paced experience after another -often involving demons, typical college life experiences, and out-of-body experiences, and it is good reading, let me assure you!
One such experience that particularly stands out in my mind is the time Johanna had a "dream" that she was standing outside her friend's 2nd-floor dormitory window. When she later told her friend of the dream, the friend related how she saw Johanna standing outside the window at that time and was about to invite her in when she realized -in horror -that she was looking out a window that was two stories up!
Another intriguing college experience was when a friend offered her mescaline to induce an out of body experience, and she left her body and saw her body below her somehow walking down the street -on its own -that late night!
However, right near the end, Johanna shares some Biblical truths that sets the record straight on whether she is Biblically solid or not.
Johanna Michaelson's book here is forwarded by Hal Lindsay (famous for his end-time book, "The Late, Great Planet Earth"). Before anyone gets turned off by any negative name recognition by Hal Lindsay, let me point out that Michaelson's book, like Wagner's and Buck's, has solid Biblical support.
Michaelson, who was visited by demons, posing as holy angels, gives five Biblical methods to "try the spirits" to see an angel (or even a so-called human "prophet") really is from God:
** 1. Does the angel's *specific* testimony acknowledge Jesus as Lord? (If you don't know, then ASK! ~ Ask the "angel" if unsure. A Holy angel will never deny Jesus!)
** 2. If it's a person, is the general testimony of their life one of righteousness? (A true prophet does not lead a sinful lifestyle.)
** 3. Did the specific prophecy come to pass? (The "gold test of a true prophet" vs. a "false prophet," so to speak.)
** 4. Is the general prophecy a method permitted by God, that is, did the "prophet" use a forbidden witchcraft method to call up the spirit, or did it appear in one of the permitted ways, such as a vision or an angelic visitation? (If you ask God for an answer via, say, calling up the dead or the Ouija board, any answer you get may be -and probably will be -from a demon, not God or His Holy angels.)
** 5. Is there the testimony of the Holy Spirit, a gut feeling, so to speak?
She says you can't always trust your feelings, as she herself was fooled, so you must use _all five_ Biblical methods to be sure.
Although I have read the Bible from cover-to-cover, Michaelson distilled these methods so well that I was impressed -and took careful notes! (She backs up her claims with scripture, in case you are curious about her book.) In fact, once I was looking online for these five methods, since I had since sold my book -and could not exactly recall, so I am writing this review as much for my benefit as for yours.
Now, as far as spooky experiences, Michaelson shares how she worked with a psychic healer, who apparently used demonic powers to heal. Before any of my Christian friends think that demons can't heal, let me refer you to these scriptures (that I've found) to verify Johanna's claims here: Exodus 7:11-12 (Pharaoh of Egypt has evil magicians do real magic) 1st Samuel 28:3a,11-12 (God allows witch to call up and speak with the dead) Matthew 7:21-23 (Even the evil people who did miracles and healed people don't all make it to heaven) 2nd Corinthians 11:13-15 (Fallen Angels and even Satan doing miracles) Revelation 13:12-14 (Both the 1st and 2nd beast do miracles, signs, and wonders.) These guys are all evil, folks! But they can still do "evil" miracles -like the demons that visited Johanna.
I do admit that I have been reluctant to even write an Amazon books review on this book, because I did not feel I could do justice to this great book, but, seeing no other reviews, I feel an obligation to my fellows. (That's you!)
Only a few books I have ever read stand equal to her book here:
Rev. Buck, who claims he was visited by angels of God, makes two predictions that come true: Right before he died in 1979, Buck predicted the pope just elected would be very influential, and this has come true; He also rightly predicted concerning the message he himself was given about the angels being made worldwide.
Also, Dr. Wagner, who claims to have been visited by God while illegally kept in a mental facility, tells of the three baptisms (of salvation, of water, and of the Holy Spirit, by Jesus Himself, as the Baptizer). Wagner also tells of when God asked her to forgive a man who had just died and was on his way to Hell. She asked God what good that would do him, where he was going. God told her that it was necessary for her to prevent bitterness from taking root in her heart. That hearkens to Mark 11:25, which says to simply forgive, when praying, not merely as you want to be forgiven, but simply forgive -probably one of the hardest scriptures to follow, but one that brings healing and peace.
Well, I can't do justice to Johanna Michaelson's book here, but I do highly recommend it.
Also, let me remind you that you may look at all my reviews for details on these other books. (Gordon Wayne Watts; Lakeland, Florida, USA)

Jumpy & scattered.......1997-10-15
This book has a good story to tell, but if you want it divided into chapters that mean something, forget it. This book tells the tales of several reporters, and they are not divided into chapters, but scattered. That could be a fault, but not with me. I liked it. I only give it a 5 because it is not in-depth enough for me. It only covers a few reporters, why not a really big compendium. Sure. GeronL. a reader

Book Description
Friedrich Nietzsche is one of the most influential thinkers of the past 150 years and On the Genealogy of Morality (1887) is his most important work on ethics and politics. A polemical contribution to moral and political theory, it offers a critique of moral values and traces the historical evolution of concepts such as guilt, conscience, responsibility, law and justice. This is a revised and updated edition of one of the most successful volumes to appear in Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought. Keith Ansell-Pearson has modified his introduction to Nietzsche's classic text, and Carol Diethe has incorporated a number of changes to the translation itself, reflecting the considerable advances in our understanding of Nietzsche in the twelve years since this edition first appeared. In this new guise the Cambridge Texts edition of Nietzsche's Genealogy should continue to enjoy widespread adoption, at both undergraduate and graduate level.

Before Good and Evil.......2006-11-12
"We are unknown to ourselves" (3) writes Friedrich Nietzsche, beginning his work On the Genealogy of Morality with a sweeping statement not just about the human condition, but about the state of Europe at the end of the 19th century. "We have never looked for ourselves" he continues, "so how are we ever supposed to find ourselves?" (ibid.) Nietzsche's famous - or, infamous - belief that Judaism, through Christianity, has bequeathed to the world a "slave morality" that has held the West captive is what this book is about.
"[A]ll religions are, at their most fundamental, systems of cruelty" (41) - and they are ultimately perpetuated by priests whose own state of inferiority once upon a time led to a great revolt in the world such that the priests came out on top and the powerful were castigated. One can, in many ways, see the old Protestant polemic against Catholicism now turned against not just Protestantisms, but against all religion in general. In many ways Nietzsche's attack on asceticism is like Martin Luther's, only without any positing of salvation from Christ. Instead, salvation comes from the anti-Christ, who is also an anti-nihilist, that frees people to enact their own "will to power" - an aesthetic creating that pays no attention to distictions between good and evil.
Nietzsche seeks what he terms "the revaluation of all values", particularly in the realm of moral judgment; the aesthetic will to power exists to return us "to the innocent conscience of the wild beast" (25) for "no cruelty, no feast" (46). By claiming that our current conceptions of "good" are ultimately due to the ressentiment of religious persons thousands of years ago, he is able to claim that our current understanding of "good" is really actually the opposite of what it purports to be. Aesthetics of the Nietzschean sort is "beyond good and evil" and therefore far closer to the old morality of nobility that once reigned supreme in the West before the revolt of the priests. In short, "what if God himself turned out to be our oldest lie?" (119)
This is not just an attack on religion, however, for Nietzsche sees the "ascetic ideals" of religion as being identical to those of philosophers: "the unconditional will to truth is faith in the ascetic ideal itself, evin if, as an unconscious imperative, - make no mistake about it, - it is the faith in a metaphysical value, a value as such of truth as vouched for and confirmed by that ideal alone" (119). Even our faith in science is based upon the old idea that truth really exists - that it is "out there" to be discovered - which means, ironically, that in their claims of the existence of truth religion and science are actually far closer together than they often like to think of themselves as being.
Nietzsche, as the back of the book states, "is one of the most influential thinkers of the past 150 years". Regardless of what one makes of him - and intellectual historians such as Steven Aschheim have noted that there have been a bewildering number of interpretations of Nietzsche since he went insane in 1890 - he is, because of his influence (whether on the Nazis or on radical French intellectual in the 1960s or the doyens of intellectual posers) worth reading. This is not his most literary work by any stretch of the imagination - one should read Thus Spoke Zarathustra for an example of Nietzsche's literary genius - or his most pointed and polemical - Twilight of the Idols and The Anti-Christ, which often come together in a single volume, are Nietzsche short, fast, and hard. Genealogy of Morality, however, represents an important step in the development of his own thought, and therefore in much intellectual history since. If that is one's interest, then Nietzsche's Genealogy is worth reading.
Hard work but worth it........2004-12-12
Firstly I am going to say i am no expert in philosophy or Nietzsche, so if you are it's time to scroll up to the above review (far more detailed). What I will try and do is tell you why you should read this book if you are new to the subject. Friedrich Nietzsche is one of the finest minds to have considered the problems of philosophy and this text gives an insight into his thought. Far more importantly it causes one to reconsider their attitudes and justify many assumptions that were unthinkingly held. The real beauty of this book is that the aphoristic structure and polemical, quasi metaphorical style provide huge space for individual response to the text, you will learn a lot about yourself reading this text as well as a lot about politics, morality and even epistemology and metaphysics. In short read and enjoy although it might be a good idea to get a commentary or introduction to Nietzsches' thought otherwise you may get a little lost.
Nietzsche's most sustained philosophical discussion.......2004-08-22
This translation of Nietzsche's ON THE GENEALOGY OF MORALITY by Carol Diethe, edited by Keith Ansell-Pearson for Cambridge texts in the History of Political Thought, includes some supplementary material, as is now customary for English translations of this book published by Nietzsche in 1887. Section 4 of Nietzsche's Preface calls attention to ten sections in his other books. Walter Kaufmann's translation has an Appendix of Seventy-five Aphorisms from Five Volumes, 28 of which are three lines or less long, showing Walter Kaufmann's preference for discreet little thoughts. Not all ten sections mentioned by Nietzsche were included in Kaufmann's Appendix, but a footnote in this book promises to include "All the passages Nietzsche mentioned" (p. 6, n. 7). Twenty-nine sections are included in the supplementary material in this book, none of which are less than ten lines long, showing more of an appreciation for sustained thought. Titles of these sections are not given in Nietzsche's preface, except for HUMAN, ALL TOO HUMAN volume II, section 89, which is called `Morality of Custom' on page 6, `Custom and its sacrifices' on page 135, and `Mores and their victim' in the Mixed Opinions and Maxims (1879) section 89 of Kaufmann's Appendix.
I believe ON THE GENEALOGY OF MORALITY is Nietzsche's most philosophically sophisticated work, and found that my knowledge of Latin was helpful in reading Walter Kaufmann's translation of the long Tertullian (circa 197 A.D.) quote in section 15 of the first essay, because Nietzsche's comments, such as "in better voice, yet worse screamers" were located in parentheses within the Latin text, while the English translation in the footnote contained additional information in brackets, such as `[Quaestuaria means prostitute, not carpenter: see Nietzsche's parenthesis above.]' This book also has Nietzsche's comments in parentheses in the Latin text, "(in better voice, screaming even louder)" (p. 33), but the brackets in the footnote also contain Nietzsche's comments "[i.e. screaming even louder] in their own tragedy" (p. 34, n. 42) so it is much easier to follow reading only the English, which tries to encompass every possible translation with its "`This is he', I will say, `that son of a carpenter or prostitute . . .'" (p. 34, n. 42). I am leaving out a few insults after Nietzsche refers to `this well-known description of the mother of Jesus from the Talmud' (p. 34, n. 42), but they are just before Nietzsche adds some Latin of his own, "(Per fidem: that is what is written.)" (p. 33).
This translation adds a footnote at this point quoting Tacitus at ANNALS XV. 44, which suggests why the supplementary material includes sections 195-203 of BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL. Kaufmann's translation mentioned section 200 in a footnote at this point, but it is interesting that section 195 started with "The Jews -- a people `born for slavery', as Tacitus and the whole ancient world says," (p. 155 and n.1: Tacitus, HISTORIES V. 8.). Kaufmann's Appendix did not include BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL, but he certainly assumed that readers would have access to an English translation of that work, having done one himself.
My interest in ON THE GENEALOGY OF MORALITY is mainly in combining Nietzsche's ideas about will to truth, listed in the index for pages xix-xx, 119-20, 126-7, 169, which includes the idea that will to truth is not so much a remnant of the ascetic ideal `as its kernel' (p. 126) with comedy, listed in the index for 9, 81. Nietzsche links "the Dionysian drama of the `fate of the soul'" with "the grand old eternal writer of the comedy of our existence!" (p. 9), leading up to "you almost need to be a cow for this one thing and certainly not a `modern man': it is rumination" (p. 10). Nietzsche seems less interested in comedy itself than in philosophers. "A married philosopher belongs to comedy, that is my proposition: and the exception, Socrates, the mischievous Socrates, . . . Every philosopher would say what Buddha said when he was told of the birth of a son: `Rahula is born to me, a fetter is forged for me' (Rahula means here `a little demon'); . . `freedom is leaving the house': so thinking, he left the house." (p. 81). Nietzsche goes into Latin again to say `Let the world perish, but let philosophy exist, let the philosopher exist, let me exist' (p. 82, n. 76). Thoughts about throwing `the human soul out of joint' (p. 110) hardly seem like the way to comedy or even music, but "The main contrivance which the ascetic priest allowed himself to use in order to make the human soul resound with every kind of heart-rending and ecstatic music was -- as everyone knows -- his utilization of the feeling of guilt." (p. 110). The order of Assassins can be found in the Index of Names for the discussion on page 118, with its "inkling of that symbol and watchword which was reserved for the highest ranks alone as their secretum: `nothing is true, everything is permitted' " that challenges the belief in truth.
Nietzsche mentioned THE WILL TO POWER as `a work I am writing' at the beginning of section 27 for serious consideration of the History of European Nihilism, but wanted to draw this book to a conclusion "that the ascetic ideal has, for the present, even in the most spiritual sphere, only one type of real enemy and injurer: these are the comedians of this ideal -- because they arouse mistrust." (pp. 125-6). This leads right into the will to truth being the kernel of the ascetic ideal, as mentioned above.
The early Prefaces for `The Greek State' and `Homer on Competition' found on pages 176-194 are interesting for comparing the noble ideals of antiquity with the possibility `that we will be destroyed because we fail to keep slaves' (p. 180). Concluding with `it then only takes a panicky fright to make it fall and smash it. . . . they betray the Hellenic . . ." (p. 194).

"In order to see birds it is necessary to become a part of the silence." So said Robert Lynd, and it's a sentiment any birder will understand. Circus Circus in Las Vegas, for example, does not really set the mood for birding. What you want is a serene and gentle spot--even if you're hiking an hour to get to where the birds are, it's still a plus if your bed and breakfast starts and ends the day with the appropriate touch. It was with these criteria in mind that Peggy van Hulsteyn set out to find the 250 best B & Bs near North America's top 100 avian refuges. Van Hulsteyn does more, however, than merely list convenient inns. Dedicated to the interests of birders, she tells how to get there by car, where the nearest airports are, who to contact (and how), when the best birding at any given location is, and whether they offer any tours or workshops (and if so, when). She describes in loving detail each preserve, refuge, and conservancy; tells what sorts of birds you'll find, and when; what the terrain is like; and what mammals you might see while you're there. Take, for instance, California's Big Morongo preserve, some 95 miles east of Los Angeles. One of the 10 largest oases in the United States, this six-mile canyon waters more than 270 species, from cactus wrens and Cassin's kingbirds to Cooper's hawks and vermilion flycatchers. Cottonwoods and scrub brush thrive, says van Hulsteyn, as do blacktailed mule deer, lizards, and mountain lions. Then, having given you an idea of what to expect there, she introduces four B & Bs nearby, providing the relevant particulars of rates and number of rooms; what credit cards are accepted and whether there's a senior citizen discount; and whether children are allowed, pets are welcome, and wheelchair access is available. But she provides a narrative in addition to the stats. Describing atmosphere and physical appearance, history and who the hosts are, van Hulsteyn doesn't neglect important details like wood-burning fireplaces, whirlpool spas, and what the breakfast is like.
Whether you're an avid birder looking for a peaceful launching pad or a romantic vacationer who might like to try birding while you're there, van Hulsteyn's bed and breakfast compilation is an inspiration to cancel the paper, pack your binoculars, and check out the birds. --Stephanie Gold
