Book Description
Unless an artist learns to promote his or her own self, promotion of one's work often goes undone - often after an immense amount of effort has gone into making of art. Getting the Word Out offers dozens of practical and effective ways in which an artist can obtain more exposure - through self-promotion. There are chapters on such subjects as: brochures and catalogs; getting your artwork into magazines; getting press coverage; getting onto radio and TV; speaking in public; traditional slide portfolios; videos; CD-ROM and other computerized documentation; organizing a panel discussion; artists' sourcebooks: are they for you?; creating a network of dealers; working with art consultants; publishing a book; publishing posters, notecards, and other multiples; using billboards, ride-alongs, and other alternative media; print advertising; and much more. In addition, there are revealing interviews with art professionals that will answer thousands of questions of importance to all working artists. (6 X 9, 288 pages, b&w photos)

A good intro/background to one of the best designers around.......2000-08-14
I am a big fan of Dries Van Noten's clothes. Naturally I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. It gives a good introduction to Dries as a designer, and what he considers important in his work and the industry. Knowing where his ideas are coming from and how they are executed makes you appreciate his designs more. Andrew Tucker did a very good job at portraiting a very talented designer who has a very loyal fan base, but not necessarily a household name for many. The book has less to do with decribing his designs, but more to do with Dries' creative processes. Highly recommended for anybody who's a fan of his work, or just interested in fashion!
Dries Van Noten : Shape, Print, and Fabric.......2000-03-21
I think this book is very informativ, because it isn't a "pop" book about the glamour of fashion, but a book that concentrats on what has to be more important design and all its aspects(which appears explicit in the title).....And what can I say Dries' design is after my opinion some of the most innovative, yet without being to far out!

The origanal's all ways the best........2005-11-25
This book is in the form of cine-manga when a tv show gets made into a comic book, so it's like photos of the anime in the book add with little speech bubbles. What I don't like though is that in this style it doesn't really look like the words are coming from the charaters mouth and the storys get shortend up and doesn't have all the anime in it. So what I say is buy the manga get the anime but don't buy the cine-manga, it isn't worth it.

Great Anime book.......2004-05-12
I like this book! I like the part when kero tells the kid when the kid says to him" ooh neat toy!" Kero says "Look at me again and i'll bite your nose!" Keros joking its so funny whhen he says "Remember kid..the nose" It seems that kero would be winking at the little boy at minute then.
very good book.......2003-01-14
This is a good review of the cardcaptors TV serise. Dont get it expecting "Cardcaptor Sakura", but it is still a extremly good, better than some other comics I have read.
Cardcaptors vs. Cardcaptor Sakura.......2002-07-21
I personally found this book to be a horrible waste of bookshelf space. I really like the original Japanese version Cardcaptor Sakura much better. This book is very good for young children, because of some parts in the other version, it is also good for people that are not used to Japanese culture or Japanese names. But I still find it very offensive that they credit the story to Clamp, because they totally cut up the American version. Any real fan of Clamp should get the Japanese version Cardcaptor Sakura.

Customer Reviews:
weLEAD Book Review by the Editor of leadingtoday.org.......2003-02-24
Wess Roberts is best known for his previous best-selling book, Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun. Perhaps to use the title of "author" for The Best Advice Ever for Leaders is a slight overstatement. What Wess has done is to compile a book of over 800 quotes that he feels will help the reader to discover and develop the various traits of leadership. Many books of quotations have been written in the past. However, Wess has created one especially for leaders. Thoughtful, and some rather unique quotations are offered on various topics from accountability through worry.
The main purpose of the book is to examine the opinions of a vast array of leaders that transcend geography, cultural and historical boundaries. As the author states in his introduction, "The Best Advice Ever for Leaders takes this approach by collecting ideas from a vast range of leaders from virtually every walk of life, every part of the world, and every era of human history." The goal of this book is to study leadership with an open mind, knowing that not every quotation is meaningful to every circumstance, place or time.
You will find quotations from individuals as diverse as Lao-tzu, Mark Twain, Lee Iacocca, Irving Berlin and George Washington. Special credit should also be given to Wess Roberts for providing footnotes after each quote to help us understand who the individual was, and a small segment about their life, so we can put their quotations in a balanced perspective. Most of these quotations are rare and seldom to be found in other publications. Here is an example under the topic of Disposition...
"Keep your fears to yourself, but share your courage with others."
-Robert Louis Stevenson, 1850-1894, Scottish essayist, poet,
and novelist. Stevenson was called to the Scottish bar but
never practiced law. He is the author of Dr. Jekyll and
Mr. Hyde, Kidnapped and Treasure Island

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The art of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain was all about his private life, but written in a code as obscure as T.S. Eliot's. Now Charles Cross has cracked the code in the definitive biography Heavier Than Heaven, an all-access pass to Cobain's heart and mind. It reveals many secrets, thanks to 400-plus interviews, and even quotes Cobain's diaries and suicide notes and reveals an unreleased Nirvana masterpiece. At last we know how he created, how lies helped him die, how his family and love life entwined his art--plus, what the heck "Smells Like Teen Spirit" really means. (It was graffiti by Bikini Kill's Kathleen Hanna after a double date with Dave Grohl, Cobain, and the "over-bored and self-assured" Tobi Vail, who wore Teen Spirit perfume; Hanna wrote it to taunt the emotionally clingy Cobain for wearing Vail's scent after sex--a violation of the no-strings-attached dating ethos of the Olympia, Washington, "outcast teen" underground. Cobain's stomach-churning passion for Vail erupted in six or so hit tunes like "Aneurysm" and "Drain You.")
Cross uncovers plenty of news, mostly grim and gripping. As a teen, Cobain said he had "suicide genes," and his clan was peculiarly defiant: one of his suicidal relatives stabbed his own belly in front of his family, then ripped apart the wound in the hospital. Cobain was contradictory: a sweet, popular teen athlete and sinister berserker, a kid who rescued injured pigeons and laughingly killed a cat, a talented yet astoundingly morbid visual artist. He grew up to be a millionaire who slept in cars (and stole one), a fiercely loyal man who ruthlessly screwed his oldest, best friends. In fact, his essence was contradictions barely contained. Cross, the coauthor of Nevermind: Nirvana, the definitive book about the making of the classic album, puts numerous Cobain-generated myths to rest. (Cobain never lived under a bridge--that Aberdeen bridge immortalized in the 12th song on Nevermind was a tidal slough, so nobody could sleep under it.) He gives the fullest account yet of what it was like to be, or love, Kurt Cobain. Heavier Than Heaven outshines the also indispensable Come As You Are. It's the deepest book about pop's darkest falling star. --Tim Appelo

Oh Look, It's the book Courtney Love wrote.
Lies

Lies
It's sad to think that some people believe this garbage.
I'll be sooo happy when she's gone!
one of the better rock bio's i've read........2007-03-26
rock biographies are not the genre in which to find great literature. seldom are they anything special. this one is pretty darn good, though. charles r. cross sets a high standard, with a complex portrait of this troubled rock genius. this is no hero worship account. kurt cobain is portrayed as the exasperating, contradictory person he know doubt was. warts and genius are juxtaposed here. a tale of cobain's rise from very ordinary beginnings to his ulimate self-destruction at the top of rock and roll's ladder. the narrative is well paced and the journalistic writing style fine. a very very good piece of work. charles r. cross has done nirvana fans a service.
Pages of Lies.......2007-03-25
This book is page after page of lies. This is what Courtney Love wants you to think, not what actually happened. Do yourself a favor, buy Love & Death: The Murder of Kurt Cobain, and Who Killed Kurt Cobain? The Mysterious Death of an Icon, instead.
dont be so blind.........2007-03-25
i have to say this book is totally unrealistic and is full of incorrect information about Kurt. this book is how Courtney wants the world to view him so everyone buys into the fact that he commited suicide. kurt was more than what he is depicted to be in this book, which is supposed to be factual, but is definitely not. If you want the real deal and the facts surrounding kurts MURDER read the book Love and Death...now that book has something worth reading.. THE TRUTH
From the mouth of Courtney Love.......2007-01-22
This is a biography of Kurt Cobain as Courtney Love wants it to be.

Book Description
The Soviet-German War of 1941-1945 was the most extensive intelligence/counterintelligence war in modern history, involving the capture, torture, deportation, execution, and "doubling" of tens of thousands of agents--most of them Soviet citizens. While Russian armies fought furiously to defeat the Wehrmacht, Stalin's security services waged an equally ruthless secret war against Hitler's spies, as well as against the Soviet population. For the first time, Robert Stephan now combines declassified U.S. intelligence documents, captured German records, and Russian sources, including a top-secret Soviet history of its intelligence and security services, to reveal the magnitude and scope of the brutal but sophisticated Soviet counterintelligence war against Nazi Germany.
Employing as many as 150,000 trained agents across a 2,400-mile front, the Soviets neutralized the majority of the more than 40,000 German agents deployed against them. As Stephan shows, their combination of Soviet military deception operations and State Security's defeat of the Abwehr's human intelligence effort had devastating consequences for the German Army in every major battle against the Red army, including Moscow, Stalingrad, Kursk, the Belorussian offensive, and the Vistula-Oder operation.
Simultaneously, Soviet State Security continued to penetrate the world's major intelligence services including those of its allies, terrorize its own citizens to prevent spying, desertion, and real or perceived opposition to the regime, and run millions of informants, making the USSR a vast prison covering one sixth of the world's surface.
Stephan discusses all facets of the Soviet counterintelligence effort, including the major Soviet "radio games" used to mislead the Germans--operations Monastery, Berezino, and those that defeated Himmler's Operation Zeppelin. He also gives the most comprehensive account to date of the Abwehr's infamous agent "Max," whose organization allegedly ran an entire network of agents inside the USSR, and reveals the reasons for Germany's catastrophic under-estimation of Soviet forces by more than one million men during their 1944 summer offensive in Belorussia.
Richly detailed and epic in scope, Stalin's Secret War opens up a previously hidden dimension of World War II.
This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.

Great addition to Eastern Front Literature.......2006-01-20
The author does an excellent job with this book. Descriptions of various Soviet operations, what happened during and the outcomes are all written out and described with details and excellent sources. The reader will see that the myth that all Soviet POW's who were either liberated or escaped back to their lines from encirclements or German POW camps were sent to Gulag labor camps is a lie. After thorough checking by the NKVD the majority, 90% or more, were sent back to their units or used in another form at the front or in the rear, only around 10% were put into Penal battalions and companies or sent to Gulag camps because of various reasons. An excellent section on how the Germans tried to penetrate the Red Army and NKVD by using POW's and others, the sheer volume of the amount of agents the Germans sent through Soviet front lines will give rise to an understanding that the NKVD had to be thorough in their jobs and many of those who did return might in fact have been working for the Germans in one way or another. All in all an excellent piece of literature on the time period and a great addition to our understanding of what went on during this war on the Eastern Front. As a comment to the other reviewer, the Soviets did not need to crack the German 'Enigma' codes, they had spies in top levels of the US and British secret services and through them received all the knowledge they needed about German activities. Sometimes British and US agencies shared information with the USSR and the NKVD or GRU (military intelligence) would then double check that information from their own spies in the respective agencies.
Gripping. I found it difficult to put down........2005-02-16
Robert W. Stephan's book explores hitherto ignored, hidden dimension of war on the Eastern Front:Soviet counter-intelligence ops and its impact in shaping the outcome of Great Patriotic War[1941-45]We know from the works of V.E Tarrant,Paul Carrel,Heinz Hohne Soviet penetration of German Armed Forces High Command, highest echelons of Nazi regime.Success of Soviet spynetworks[Red Orchestra]eroded Wehrmact's ability to defeat Red Army;derailed Hitler's plan to conquer Soviet Union.Concurrently GRU,NKGB's penetration of Abwehr,Gestapo,SD helped Soviets to uncover to the fullest extent possible German secret agent network operating in Russia.
German agents caught were turned into double agents.Using them as 'radioplaybacks'Soviets started feeding controlled information which fooled German High Command.Information supposedly coming from authentic sources made Germans misinterpret scope, magnitude, direction of Soviet thrusts.Maskirovka ensured the destruction of German Army Group Centre{Bagration] in summer of 1944.Intially to establish the credibility of information passed on by double agent Stavka with the connivance of Stalin betrayed few Red Army ops. Most important being 'MARS'launched by Marshal Zhukov to eliminate Rzhev salient in Nov 1942 which ended in a fiasco.
Soviet success in deceiving Germans hastened Wehrmacht's defeat on the Eastern Front. If not it would have prolonged hostilities or may have ended in a stalemate. In narrating Soviet counter-espionage ops author draws parallels with what British [XX]committee of MI5 did to dupe Germans.Like the British Soviets molded deception into a decisive weapon.
So far analogy holds good;but no further.Unlike British Soviet covert ops are shrouded in mystery. Why this secrecy even though 60 years have passed since capitulation of Nazi Germany is a conundrum which has continued to baffle experts. For instance the memoirs of top Soviet commanders Zhukov,Shtmenko,Rokkosovsky,Vassilievsky,Chuikov does not say anything about Soviet intelligence triumph.Another intriuging aspect it is not known wheather Soviets had cracked German Enigma codes. But one has to assume that Russians must have had some success if not how could they hope to monitor progress made in deceiving Germans.
This book establishes beyond doubt Bolsheviks were masters in the art of espionage ,counter-espionage,covert operations.I feel circumstances surrounding the birth of Soviet state dictated it to be so.Soviet Union was besieged by foes assailing it from different directions.Defence of revolution demanded Soviets have highly efficent secret service which could foil plots ,machinations of imperialist powers.
So in the secret war that followed German intelligence was outclassed, outwitted, outmanoeuvred.Inthe field of espionage Germans were made to look crass amateurs.Reader will get to know this while perusing chapters related to operations Monastery,Berezino in this book.Operation Barbarossa was colossal blunder ;Germans underestimated strength lay latent Soviet Union.Superior German intelligence would have helped them to uncover that strength. But that was not to be.

Dated.......2006-01-30
The book is rather dated even though only 10 years old, my recommendation is to get "What Stalin Knew: The Enigma of Barbarossa" by David E. Murphy which explains much of what this book in fact questions and makes assertions about.

Book Description
Most Americans don't think of their government as an empire, but in fact the United States has been steadily expanding its control of overseas territories since the turn of the twentieth century. Now, through political intimidation and over 700 military bases worldwide, the U.S. holds sway over an area that dwarfs the great empires of world history.
In "The Empire Has No Clothes", Ivan Eland, a leading expert on U.S. defense policy and national security, examines American military interventions around the world from the Spanish-American War up to the invasion of Iraq.
Eland shows that the concept of empire is wholly contrary to the principles of both liberals and conservatives and that it makes a mockery of the Founding Fathers' vision for a free republic. Eland also warns that in recent years, "blowback" and the enormous expansion of domestic federal power resulting from this overextended empire have begun to threaten the American homeland itself and curtail the very liberties these interventions were supposed to protect.
Public debate of the United States' role in the world has finally begun in earnest, and Ivan Eland delivers a penetrating argument in this landmark book, exposing the imperial motives behind interventionist U.S. policy, questioning the historical assumptions on which it is based and advocating a return to the Founding Fathers' policy of military restraint overseas.

well structured arguments against empire.......2007-05-04
eland does a unique thing with this book - he deconstructs the imperialism argument from every perspective. so it really feels like he's not preaching to the choir. by doing so, he strengthens his argument. no matter what your political philosophy is, this book finds a way to address you and dissuade you from supporting the american empire (it may or may not technically be one, depending on how you define it, but you know what he's talking about here). admittedly, eland is a bit more of an isolationist than i'd like, but hey, people with different political views coming to similar conclusions is a good thing! it's also a pretty easy read - you don't need to have coursework in international security or international political economy to get what he's saying.
Poor.......2006-06-14
The author has certainly convinced himself that in the 21st century the U.S. should think of itself as a plaintive island. I think that always in politics and governance the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Alas, this book - scholarly, heavily researched - is so stiffly one-sided that it almost impressed me as a meticulous work of mad fantasy. It is too lucid to count as manifesto but too bloodless and bland to register a real sense of thoughtulness.
Imperial Lies for War.......2005-12-21
As I said it for another book ("The New American Empire"), Ivan Eland's book "The Empire Has No Clothes" is also a great book to see through Bush's lies.
Now, George W. Bush says that he accepts responsibility for taking the U.S. to war in Iraq based on faulty intelligence. -This is all wrong.
It was not the intelligence that was faulty; it was Bush's intentions to wage war against Iraq no matter what were the intelligence and the facts. He twisted the intelligence reports and invented lies around his already decided policy.
That's why he is guilty of having launched a war of aggression on lies and deception, and on having violated, in so doing, international law. He and his neocon advisors should pray that they will never be brought before an international court of justice.
How to dismantle an Empire.......2005-12-09
A direct, educated antithesis to the imperial warmongering of Kaplan and the like. A read that will interest anyone who is interested in preserving our declining democratic republic.
Well-researched insights.......2004-11-27
Eland challenges conventional wisdom about why so many people around the world dislike Americans--it's not who we are or what we believe, but how our government behaves. With specific chapters directed at both conservatives and liberals explaining how over-reaching US interventionism goes against their principles, there is something in this book for everyone.

a must for adventurous birders.......2006-05-05
In this book a middle-aged British man describes how he gave up a lucrative if not satisfying career in order to travel the world while trying to see 1,000 species of bird. This is no mean feat, and requires visiting some remote areas of some very bird-rich countries, all of which has to be carefully timed to maximise success with migrating birds etc. The author has a very engaging writing style, so much so that I happily read the entire book in one day.
Some of the information may be a bit too much for people with just a mild interest in birds, since some of the species listed are quite obscure, although the exotic, triple- or quadruple barrelled names are thrilling by anyone's standards. Non-birders may also wonder how anyone can be so obsessive! As a birder myself I was very interested in the author's struggles, and sympathised with several natural and man-made obstacles he was faced with. Still, all of the struggles added to the challenge, and anyone who is planning to travel off the beaten track in developing nations will learn much from this.
The book isn't overwhelmed by birds, however, with the author making some keen observations about social life in each of the countrues he visits, and some of the small details about social events and accommodation add colour to the tale.
The author also provides a running commentary of an on-off romance he was having with a girl back in Britain, which I have to say left me feeling a little queasy at times. The author, by his own (almost) admission, is a fairly plain, pudgy-faced, bespectacled middle-aged Brit, while the girl is considerably younger and attractive. The occasional sexual references are made in a sort of nudge-nudge-wink-wink bragging style that I thought was very much at odds with the rest of the prose (for example, the author recalls her turning up for a meeting wearing a tight top and thinking to himself 'How did I miss those?')
Despite this occasional creepy sexual moments, the book itself is a lot of fun to read, and the author deserves a lot of credit. Firstly, for having the guts to abandon a career to follow his heart, and secondly for writing about it so eloquently that others may feel motivated to do it themselves.
I recommend it strongly.
