Book Description
Billions of dollars are spent every year on promotions, and for some, the payoff is huge. The key is creating promotions that cut through the clutter to delight, astound, amuse, shock, and touch one's intended audience in a memorable and smart way.
This book takes intelligent and well-crafted promotions and breaks down the essential elements in a caption-like format so the readers will get the maximum number of promotions and the information they need in the shortest amount of time. Despite the streamlined approach, no critical information is lost.
Featuring 140 diverse promotions, Innovative Promotions at Work: A Quick Guide to the Essentials of Effective Design deconstructs each and provides answers to designers' six most important questions: What was the promotion for? What was the concept? What was the goal? What were the challenges? What did the client require? Last, how successful was the piece?
The answers to these questions give readers the insight they need to construct a roadmap to a successful promotion of their own.

Customer Reviews:
Love it!.......2007-02-01
That is all that I have to say... LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!! The artwork is beautiful... I love the classic Archies' drawings... I read them all, now what do I do?
SOME OF ARCHIE'S WACKIEST ADVENTURES!.......2005-04-27
While the first volume of "The Best of the Forties" concentrated on presenting the first appearances of Archie and the rest of the gang, the second volume is strictly slapstick. All of the stories from this volume are reprinted from Laugh Comics while the first re-printed stories from Pep, and Archie comics. The girls take a bit of a back seat in these dozen stories as Jughead becomes the main co-star. Even Mr. Andrews gets more strip time than Betty and Veronica. The stories are more slapstick, than other Archie stories relying on a lot of physical humor. While maybe not as historically important as the one in volume one, these stories present a side of Archie rarely seen by us baby boomers who were so used to adventures centered on Riverdale High and the ongoing love triangle. In this regard, the stories are less time-sensitive and could easily be dropped into modern times as references to current events of the 40's are kept to a bare minimum.
Among my favorite stories are:
"Mr. Blunk Comes to Town" from Laugh #21. Archie's dad is, of course, a real estate agent and a man named Mr. Blunk comes to town to buy a seemingly worthless plot of land. Unfortunately, Archie takes the contract out on his date by mistake. Through a series of car breakdowns and other mishaps, Mr. Andrews and Archie keep missing each other which turns out to be a good thing as Mr. Andrews soon learns that oil was found on the land and Blunk knew about it all along!
"Go Fly a Kite" from Laugh #23. Archie and Jughead are trying to build a kite and their racket disturbs their fathers. Soon Mr. Andrew and Mr. Jones take over building the kite with disastrous results.
"Double Trouble" From Laugh #25. Archie wonders why the new girl in school, Alice Adams changes from nice to mean to him at the drop of a hat. What Archie doesn't know is that the girls are twins!
"It's a Dog's Life" from Laugh #27. Archie and Jughead agree to bathe Veronica's dog. Jughead grabs hair remover instead of shampoo by mistake resulting in a hairless pooch right before the big dog show!
"Lady Killer" from Laugh #28. Archie decides to start an escort service to earn some extra money. He doesn't want to be recognized as a kid so wears a beard and dark hair to disguise himself. His first customer named "Peaches" turns out to be Miss Grundy! The pair go out to a nightclub and Archie has to dodge Reggie and Veronica who are there as well.
"Nature Boy" from Laugh #36. Archie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica go out on a picnic and in wild slapstick fashion, virtually everything goes wrong from Jughead smashing a cake, to Archie burning the burgers, Betty and Veronica sitting in poison ivy, and Jughead playing with a skunk!
While maybe not as historically important, these stories were very funny and a change to those of us who only knew Archie from the 60's and 70's.
The 'b-sides' from the 1940's.......2004-06-29
Not quite as fresh as the previous volume - "Archie Americana: Best of the Forties, Book 1," but still a must read for the die-hard Archie afficionado. While Book 1 was lovingly crafted to showcase material with historic value (e.g. - the first appearance of key characters, locations, etc.), Book 2 comes across a bit more lightweight in comparison as the stories seem selected more for the zaniness of its humor and the timeframe that the stories were selected from (1946-1949) seems somewhat narrower. Still, this being Archie comics and all, it still manages to be an enjoyable read all the way through, but do make sure that you read/purchase Book 1 first.
Book Description
For the woman more accustomed to singing Missoni's praises than singing lullabies comes Amy Allen's irresistible This Little Piggy Went to Prada: Nursery Rhymes for the Blahnik Brigade. Filled from cover to cover with sumptuous full color illustrations by Eun-Kyung Kung, This Little Piggy Went to Prada presents classic nursery rhymes with a thoroughly modern and charmingly ironic spin that will make the most sleepless fashionista mom smile, even when she's knee-deep in diapers.
Customer Reviews:
So Cute!.......2007-09-13
Gorgeous illustrations. Witty little fashionista takes on traditional nursery rhymes. Too short and not something i'd recommend to be read to children, but gorgeous for the fashion lover at heart.
Glorious!.......2007-07-26
I received this book as a gift when my third child was born.
It is spectacular and wonderfully witty. My personal belief is that the reviews that cite it as mediocre and such are missing the point - this is a book that is fun for mom *and* fun for the kiddies.
You won't find duckies and bunnies here - but you will find a wonderful play on nursery classics that appeals to the fashion-loving mom and her hip kiddos.
And yes, the author is British. Therefore some of the references are British - makes perfect sense to me. That added a welcome level of complexity to the discussion with my 4 year old about how certain words in the same language might be used differently in different places.
I love this book - and I know many adults sans kiddos who would love it as well.
Prada Pigglies!.......2007-06-28
Such a cute book! The Mommy-to-Be is such a diva and loved it! Absolutely fabulous!
Mediocre.......2007-05-14
I thought it would be cute to have around b/c its a different take on classic nursery rhymes. I also thought the book would be more suitabe for children for some reason...but it was a bit materialistic for my tastes and not what I want my child focused on.
great funny.......2007-04-04
easy to read, kids love it and have a good laugh at what they do understand.beautiful keepsake.

The basics of 3D computer animation, updated to reflect the latest advances in animation technology. Retaining the structure and substance of the successful first edition, O'Rourke integrates techniques that have become an accepted part of technology since the book was published. New sections cover advanced modeling, rendering, and animating techniques, including expressions, blended surfaces, environment rendering, animation constraints, volumetric lights, and an expanded description of particle systems. A new chapter on animation production has been added.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for intro courses in animation.......2001-11-07
This book is excellent in giving the reader the "big picture" of foundational knowledge needed to learn technical animation. I strongly suggest using this book in introductory courses that teach technical-based animation, looking at techniques, not creativity.
3D Newbie Likes It.......2000-02-09
I'm entirely new to 3D modeling and animation. I found this book to be exceptionally well written. The author provides a clear and concise explanation of the principles of 3D computer graphics, with easy-to-understand examples throughout. As stated in other reviews, it is not software specific. If you are looking for an introductory but thorough 3D primer, I recommend this book without reservation. It should provide a solid foundation for those who have little or no prior computer graphics experience.
Outstanding classroom text!.......2000-01-05
As an instructor in 3D computer animation I find this book to be an excellent text for the classroom. O'Rourke knows his stuff and presents the material in a well-thought out, logical format. The only negative is that it's time for a new release.
Excellent Overview, But Go Elsewhere For Details.......1999-11-22
I agree with prior reviews that this book is well written and provides an excellent introduction to 3D computer graphics. If you're new to the field and want to learn about the general terminology and techniques of 3D computer graphics then this would be a top choice. Just don't expect, however, that after finishing you'll be ready to plunge into creating your own rendering engine or even be up to speed on using an existing engine. If you're looking for technical detail, then you'll have to look elsewhere.
well written, but sparsely illustrated.......1999-10-06
While Mr. O'Rourke's book does a very good job of explaining in depth the terminology of 3d computer graphics, the book is very sparse in illustrations that display how the concepts translate into final rendered imagery. With the exception of the middle of the book, which has glossy reproductions from actual computer generated 3d scenes, the book looks and feels like a high school algebra textbook.

Book Description
A refreshingly honest spiritual exploration from the New York Times bestselling author of the Anna Pigeon novels.
Actor, adventuress, seeker of truth, and author of the New York Times bestselling Anna Pigeon mystery series, Nevada Barr beckons readers to share her spiritual search for meaning in life.
Hat by hat, step by step, Barr leads readers down her path to enlightenment by sharing personal episodes, some of them funny and revealing, others painfully honest. Each chapter offers a truth or an answer forged through experience and deep reflection, and a nugget of insight certain to encourage thought and discussion among readers, who may, in turn, find their own spiritual language.
Customer Reviews:
So easy to relate to.......2007-07-10
I've read all Nevada Barr's books not so much for their stories/plots but because I love Ms. Barr's, and her protagonist Anna Pigeon's, attitudes and views on life. I first took it out of the library, read it twice, and then decided I wanted my own copy so I could reread it whenever I wanted.
For me, this book is about Ms. Barr's journey to reconcile and integrate spirituality, without becoming a religious fanatic, with her down-to-earth psyche and firm footing in physical reality. This is something I've been working on for most of my life, and I'm astonished how similar my thoughts have been to Ms. Barr's. The thought paths she takes you through in this book, and the clarity of her conclusions, helped me focus on who I am and how to make the best of my time here. I am so glad I found this book.
A new side of Nevada Barr.......2007-02-07
Having read all of Nevada's novels, I didn't expect to be surprised by her spiritual journey, but I was. It was interesting to find out how much of Anna Pidgeon's personality and personal history was based on Nevada's own and how much was very different. Her insights are very real, down to earth and unlike most spiritual guides. I didn't always agree, but she made me examine some assumptions from a new viewpoint.
Beautiful, thoughtful, profound.......2007-01-06
This book touches deeply and lovingly on many of today's spiritual issues. I bought copies of this book for all the people in my life that I care about.
On things that really matter.......2006-01-20
I found Nevada's book to be honest, well written, with a subtle sense of humor so needed in works dealing with religion and enlightenment. One of my favorite lines: "... I would occasionally run across someone who seemed to truly know God, and I realized that religion, like a bad toupee or a face-lift gone sour, is only obvious when it's done badly." This book did not do well commercially because honest well-written books dealing with things that really matter don't sell. But this book is very good, very important. It helped me on my return journey to God.
Mystery Writer Shares Her Spiritual Musings.......2005-06-09
In this collection of short essays, Ms. Barr shares her spiritual experiences which are sometimes witty and sometimes thought-provoking. Some of the stories may even inspire readers to do some soul searching of their own, as they relate to some of the deeper issues Ms. Barr shares. These issues include social conciousness and responsibility to the global community; the importance of keeping commitments to others as well as to oneself; and striving to be a good person, not only for the hope of redemption of one's soul in the hereafter, but for the benefits received during one's lifetime.
Ms. Barr shares some unusual thoughts regarding spirituality that other seekers might also find enlightening. Those readers who are already on a well-defined spiritual path may not agree with some or many of the ideas Ms Barr presents, but reading this book is still a good opportunity to explore the musings of a fellow traveler on the spiritual journey of life.
Book Description
This is the story of a tragic confrontation between two national movements contesting the same small piece of land, a clash that has become one of the most intractable issues in modern times. From the establishment of the first Zionist colonies in the 1880s, tensions have run high between the indigenous Arab population of Palestine and Jews who have sought to create an independent state on land they consider their ancient home. Clashes, both internal and external, have become increasingly violent. Since the first full-scale Palestinian Revolt in 1936, relations have, except for a few brief periods of peace, been characterized by continuous and escalating degrees of bloodshed. Twelve major clashes can be identified from that first three-year struggle to the current Intifada al Aqsa. Here, 12 Israeli historians and writers present reflections on the incidents, along with up-to-date analysis and historical assessment. After a detailed introduction designed to help readers place the conflicts into a historical context, experts discuss events ranging from the first organized revolt to the current conflagration. As a result of the initial weakness of the Palestinians and the defeats they suffered at the hands of the better-organized Israelis, the entire Arab world stepped into the breach. Wars between May 1948 and October 1973 involved Arab regular armies, but the Palestinian comeback began in 1965, as a result of guerrilla insurgency. It gathered momentum with the popular uprising of the first Intifada (1987-1990) and more so with the start of the second and more lethal Intifada in 2000. The situation is, these experts argue, not without hope of a resolution, but an end to the violence is unlikely to come easily or quickly.

Book Description
Cass Sunstein and Martha Nussbaum bring together an all-star cast of contributors to explore the legal and political issues that underlie the campaign for animal rights and the opposition to it. Addressing ethical questions about ownership, protection against unjustified suffering, and the ability of animals to make their own choices free from human control, the authors offer numerous different perspectives on animal rights and animal welfare. They show that whatever one's ultimate conclusions, the relationship between human beings and nonhuman animals is being fundamentally rethought. This book offers a state-of-the-art treatment of that rethinking.
Customer Reviews:
A balanced and insightful book.......2007-09-21
MY RATING SYSTEM:
* - if you have to chose between torture and reading this book, then you might want to consider reading the book - although it depends on just how severe the torture would be.
** - if you've lost your job and have quite a bit of free time on your hands, and don't have anything else better to do, then you might want to consider reading this book; don't expect to learn much or really be entertained. It will however, help you pass the time until your death.
*** - meh...I'm indifferent. Reading this book will not alter your life in any significant way, yet it is not so horrendously dreadful that your taking the time to read it will be a complete waste of time.
**** - Good book to great book zone here. You should probably read this book if you have some spare time. This book could be interesting, entertaining, or informative.
***** - Outstanding book! Make time to read this book - you'll learn or be entertained or intrigued. The book might even be good enough to provide original or helpful insights into the world that we live in.
REVIEW:
Sunstein and Naussbaum have put together a fantastic collection of essays on the controversial and often incompletely understood topic of animal rights. This book is a must for any self-proclaimed animal rights proponents and, I think, a very informative read for anyone interested in the subject of the interaction between humans and animals. While the essays can, at times, be dense and academic (after all, there are some real intellectual heavyweights who have contributed to this book), I found most of the essays to be well worth the time and energy required to go through them.
The book starts out with several essays on issues that form a theoretical or principled debate on the issue of the role and appropriateness of animal rights, often drawing on and developing philosophical arguments to support a variety of competing positions. Generally, the essays search for the existence of a foundation for 'animal rights', or, as some of the authors might argue, if one exists at all. The middle section of the book tended to focus the more practical foundations and implications of a system of animal rights, including an informative essay by David J. Wolfson and Mariann Sullivan on the restricted application of animal cruelty laws in the North American agribusiness sector. The final essays of the book tend to be theoretical prescriptive explorations, examining where animal rights developments might progress in the future.
In summary, I think that this was an extremely valuable book, and definitely one that I will find myself returning to several times in the future.
Good survey of hot topics.......2007-06-08
Great debates on the most recent issues in animal law. A great resource for Animal Law instructors.
refreshingly new perspectives.......2005-09-07
Animal Rights: Current Debates and New Directions explores the human - animal relationship from a range of perspectives. It aims to assist in the fundamental rethinking of the relationship between human beings and nonhuman animals. The book consists of fourteen chapters, each written by a different author. It is this format of the text, drawing on an impressive list of contributors, which makes it so distinctive and significant. The chapters flow surprisingly well, in some cases engaging with each other's arguments. While the great proportion of the book is concerned with positive reforms towards the increased recognition of the interests of nonhuman animals it does, rather uniquely, contain contributions from both sides of the animal rights debate.
Those acquainted with recent animal rights literature will be familiar with some of the contributors' work. Steven Wise contributes an excellent chapter which is adapted from his book "Drawing the Line", while Gary Francione's chapter draws on ideas mapped out in his groundbreaking work "Animals, Property and the Law". In addition to the contributions of the more prominent authors, the book contains a number of stimulating and fresh ideas from thinkers who haven't published extensively in this field.
The book represents a comprehensive exploration of the major contemporary animal rights debates. The chapters on law and policy reform are particularly engaging and insightful, with a number of the contributors putting forward substantial and compelling suggestions for reform.
It is certainly not an introductory type of text. The book is distinctly academic in tone, as one would expect given the overwhelming majority of the contributors are professors from prestigious universities.
A highly recommended read and a valuable reference for those interested in theoretical debates on animal rights. It's a timely book for the animal rights movement representing a compendium of fresh ideas and a roadmap for legal reform.
Contains an important "fragment" from Catharine MacKinnon.......2005-02-14
From an animal rights persective, this book is inconsistent.
The reader will be treated, however, to a new voice -- that of Catharine MacKinnon, in a fascinating piece named "Of Mice and Men: A Feminist Fragment on Animal Rights." In it, Professor MacKinnon asks if "missing the misogyny in animal use and abuse" hinders animal rights successes.
We live in a culture that's largely comfortable thinking that what humans do to nonhuman bodies does not matter - at least what's done in regular, institutionalized ways.
As female people have often been defined and valued in terms of the use of their bodies and their reproductive functions, it is logical that nonhuman-rights advocates could find a message of value in the social movement for women's equality.
Regarding the treatment of nonhumans and the treatment of women, MacKinnon notes that the "denial of social hierarchy in both relations is further supported by verbiage about love and protection" as though it mitigates the domination. Often, rights for women have been denied because love and protection have been considered good enough. Could we not say the same about the animals we have domesticated?
If so, then the animal advocacy movement richly needs the contribution that MacKinnon's feminist fragment provides.
The New Standard.......2004-05-02
Nussbaum and Sunstein have put together something very special. This book mixes the standard animal rights fare of Singer, Wise, and Francione with exciting new contributions by thinkers like Catharine MacKinnon, Richard Posner, as well as Sunstein and Nussbaum themselves. The book is well edited, with the various chapters flowing from issue to issue, and responding to each others arguments. The work explores not only what we own to animals, but also what practical approaches might deliver. The animal rights issue show not merely to be a "for or against" issue. Instead, we see a nuanced debate about the place of animals in theory and practice.
This book is essential to academic audiences, but should also prove accessible to general audiences. I suspect this will become a standard text for future animal rights courses.
