2 dolls with 26 exquisite kimonos rich in Japanese tradition, culture, art.
Customer Reviews:
Love the kimonos, wish there was more info .......2005-08-17
You have to hand it to Tom Tierney, his descriptions and the information he offers on his paper dolls are first class. Ming-Ju Sun has made really lovely paper dolls, and if I just wanted some paper dolls I'd be very happy. But I also want to find out about the fabrics and layers and traditional fabrics for the season...
A trip down memory lane.......2005-03-13
Wow--I had this book when I was a little girl. The warnings of the other reviewers are quite correct: it's heck trying to cut out those fiddly little details, and a lot of bits got lost. These are dolls for admiring, not playing with. Having said that, the level of detail and color in the costumes is wonderful, simply beautiful. Even if they *were* a bit fiddly, I had a great time with them as a child!
Too nice to play with! (But there are ways...).......2002-12-28
I consider this to be more of a coffee table book than an actual paper doll book. The costumes are gorgeous with really great details and remind me a lot of old Japanese woodblock prints. However, if you or your child really want to cut these out for play or display, I would recommend scanning or copying the costume pages separately so that you can play with them but not ruin the whole book.
GREAT BOOK!!!.......2001-02-28
Out of all Ming-ju Sun's illustrated books, I like this one the best. There are 26 costumes, all of which are wonderfully detailed. There are explanations and descriptions of all of the kimonos. There are two paper dolls, one facing to the left and the other facing to the right. For almost each costume, there is an ornate head piece-a wig of sorts. I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in Kimonos or simply Japanese Art. This is a nice book just to have on the shelf where you can flip through it and look at the pictures. I don't, however, recommend cutting the costumes out. Some of the details on the head pieces and on the kimonos may be lost. A real treasure and a great value. Buy it today!
Japanese Kimon Paper Dolls in Full Color.......2000-07-16
This book of richly colored paper dolls is great for anyone interested in Japanese history or fashion. Also great for teachers doing units on Japan and Aisa. The dolls in the book are designed after prints by Japanese artists. In the back of the book it describes and tells the history of each of the kimonos. It also contains a small history of the Kimono and Japanes clothing. There are 26 kimonos and 2 dolls.

Book Description
Daughter of a merchant family in nineteenth-century Japan and wife of a distinguished scholar-doctor of the samurai class, Shibue Io was a woman remarkable in her own right for her exceptionally keen mind and fearless spirit. Edwin McClellan now draws on the biography of her husband, written by Mori Ogai, to tell the story of Shibue Io, her society, and her times.
Customer Reviews:
Woman with a "keen mind, fearless spirit".......2000-06-18
Working from Mori Ogai's biography of Shibue Chusai, a 19th century Japanese doctor in service to the Tsugaru Shogunate, the author of this book focuses rather on the extraordinary life of his wife, Io. Supplementing Ogai's text with his own research, McClellan covers the span of her difficult and remarkable life from her marriage to Chusai, the births (and deaths) of her children, the death of Chusai, and her latter days spent moving all over Japan with her family, trying to eke out a meager living. Japan at this time was going through significant changes as power was wrested from feudal landlords and "restored" to the Emperor Meiji. As a result, Io's entire life changed; born to privilege and affluence, she and her family lost both their status and their income in the restoration. What is amazing about Io is how unconventional she is, and how her story resists the stereotype of the demure, powerless woman (especially in 19th century Japan). Io is not afraid to carry a dagger and pull it out and threaten to use it on thugs who would harm her. And after her husband's death she declines invitations to live with relatives, opting instead to maintain her autonomy even with its threat of greater poverty. She is exceptionally well educated, and learns to read English in her sixties. But McClellan is also careful to place Io's story within its historical context, reminding us of the real limitations she faced because of her sex. He still surmises, however, on her opinions on the issues affecting her quickly changing society, such as women's voting rights and Western scholarship. Above all, Io is portrayed as a woman who combines qualities of strength and courage with tolerance. These are the exact qualities one needed to survive in the world she inhabited, and her possession of them ensured, no doubt, her remarkable success.

Book Description
In the 22nd Century, a few short years of interstellar contact have taught Man a hard lesson: there are powerful, unstoppable, alien forces abroad that are nightmare manifest. It's a realization that deals a body blow to Man's belief in his own superiority and leaves him with the only option he has ever had: to fight. When the Doctor and his friends are caught in the crossfire, they find suspicion and paranoia running rampant, with enemies to be seen in every shadow. The fight against alien forces is no job for an amateur, and for a Doctor only just finding his way in the universe again, one misstep could be fatal.

Good Newcomer.......2006-02-08
So just as the book series ends, BBC makes a real find in newcomer Wallace. He has a crisp intelligent writing style and writes a solid and intriguing science fiction story. As a note this is the only real Eighth Doctor PDA and fits between Earthworld and Vanishing Point.Recommended.

Much less a bio than an ego trip for the author. Forum is reduced to about 2 pages in the book. How did this ever get published? Skip it and look for another bio on Mostel.

Enlightenment.......2000-07-18
I first received this book with its accompanying 3 CD set in a class context. I found it to be quite insightful and worthwhile reading. The book along with the 3 CD set takes you through the history of music as well as types ranging from many wonderful classical epics to music form the 20's and other nations as well as genera. With the book I gained a higher apperception of music as well as a better understanding. This book is a wonderful book for anyone who would like to teach form it as well as learn from it. The music is broken up in to sections so as you read along about the pieces you can go back and listen to them and gain a better understanding about as to what the book is trying to convey. The accompanying CDs also have a great selection of music that would wonderfully accompany anyone's growing collection. I highly recommend this book along with its CD set for anyone who would like to gain a better understand as well as an appreciation for music.

Geometry (1 of the 7 books in Manhattan GMAT's Preparation Guide series) provides a highly organized and structured approach to the variety of questions in this quantitative content area. Students learn every geometric principle, formula, and problem type tested on the GMAT and they master the intricacies of shapes, planes, lines, angles, and objects. The book offers a unique balance between two competing emphases: test-taking strategies and in-depth content understanding. Practice problem-sets build specific foundational skills in each topic and include the most advanced content that many other prep books ignore. As the average GMAT score required to gain admission to top b-schools continues to rise, this guide provides test-takers with the depth and volume of advanced material essential for succeeding on the GMAT's computer adaptive format. Book also includes online access to 3 full-length Simulated Practice GMAT Exams at Manhattan GMAT's website.

Very good for the target audience.......2007-09-18
"Very good for the target audience" - I think this sums it all. If you are someone who has not done active maths for some time now, and therefore does not remember the concepts involved very well, this is the book for you. This I will say holds true for most of the books of the Manhattan Quant series.
The Manhattan Quant series books cover the concepts only to the degree that gets asked in the GMAT, and do not overwhelm you.
Plus, as each of the Manhattan books then turns to the Official Guide for practice, each of the books has a section where the appropriate questions for that topic are numbered from the OG. They also detail the toughest of the lot from OG. Here I think the book is useful for anyone, irrespective of the personal comfort level with maths.
Therefore if you are true to yourself and practice the questions marked from OG as you go along, this would prove to an excellent resource for cracking the quant part of the GMAT.
If you can count from 1 to 10.... this book is not for you.......2006-09-04
I have an engineering background and I strongly suggest others with a similar one or even more better some basic high school math knowledge not to buy this book. I could complete this book and all of its 'exercises' in an hour. All it does is repeats very basic math knowledge which I bet you will not forget even after 50 years from now. All in all bad book for GMAT Geometry preparation. Now I have look for ways to sell this book which I bought two days ago... any buyers? not a scratch on the paper and is all in mint condition.
Book Description
Christopher Marlowe: Poet and Spy is the most thorough and detailed life of Marlowe since John Bakeless's in 1942. It has new material on Marlowe in relation to Canterbury, also on his home life, schooling, and six and a half years at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and includes fresh data on his reading, teachers, and early achievements, including a new letter with a new date for the famous 'putative portrait' of Marlowe at Cambridge. The biography uses for the first time the Latin writings of his friend Thomas Watson to illuminate Marlowe's life in London and his career as a spy (that is, as a courier and agent for the Elizabethan Privy Council). There are new accounts of him on the continent, particularly at Flushing or Vlissingen, where he was arrested. The book also more fully explains Marlowe's relations with his chief patron, Thomas Walsingham, than ever before. This is also the first biography to explore in detail Marlowe's relations with fellow playwrights such as Kyd and Shakespeare, and to show how Marlowe's relations with Shakespeare evolved from 1590 to 1593. With closer views of him in relation to the Elizabethan stage than have appeared in any biography, the book examines in detail his aims, mind, and techniques as exhibited in all of his plays, from Dido, the Tamburlaine dramas, and Doctor Faustus through to The Jew of Malta and Edward II. It offers new treatments of his evolving versions of 'The Passionate Shepherd', and displays circumstances, influences, and the bearings of Shakespeare's 'Venus and Adonis' in relation to Marlowe's 'Hero and Leander' Throughout, there is a strong emphasis on Marlowe's friendships and so-called 'homosexuality'. Fresh information is brought to bear on his seductive use of blasphemy, his street fights, his methods of preparing himself for writing, and his atheism and religious interests. The book also explores his attraction to scientists and mathematicians such as Thomas Harriot and others in the Ralegh-Northumberland set of thinkers and experimenters. Finally, there is new data on spies and business agents such as Robert Poley, Nicholas Skeres, and Ingram Frizer, and a more exact account of the circumstances that led up to Marlowe's murder.
Customer Reviews:
A Muse For The Royals........2006-09-09
'The Tragic History of the Life and Death of Dr. Faustus' was perhaps Christopher Marlowe's masterpiece. The hero endeavors to save his soul and trick the devil; his devil, Methostophilis, was no match for Faust who had been tormented with 10,000 hells -- after he had seen "the face of God and tasted the eternal joys of heaven." If we find succor in hate, "neglect reconciliation," 'we shall always carry hell about with us.' Faust had boasted that "a sound magician is a mighty god."
Marlowe was no atheist as believed during his short life, but he did believe in Merlin's magic. His patron, Tom Walsingham, was a former spy who dabbled with magical spirits, (not alcohol, though he did have a brewery. 'Dido (Queen of Carthage)' was the play in which Dido's love is like Petrarch's, which Marlowe is said to have inherited. It is limitless; Marlowe portrays the intensity of her desires and playfulness, In his poetic treatise, she expressed herself with "a valid new logic" as she extolls the virtues of the winds and the seas. Marlowe, nicknamed Kit Marloe at Cambridge, was not a romantic, but a "questing realist." Personally, he was excitable, vulnerable and inconsistent.
'Tamburlaine' was written in blank verse using Marlowe's 'pathos' and much hyperbole. His views on history, society and social violence began to evolve as he showed the feelings, attitudes, motivation and behavior of humans from a religious aspect. He evokes four or five different religions in this play. In it, his hero was compared to Christ. "In dramatizing faith, desire, and our other attributes in their ambiguity, Marlowe belongs to us." For six months in 1594, the year after he was murdered, revivals of these two parts were played out before audiences as large as two thousand. Every foreign locale in his plays had a relation to England.
He had just completed 'Hero and Leander' in 1593 before he was arrested as a spy and met his untimely death. He had portrayed the "gap between his well-disciplined life of art and thought and the loose and easy exuberance of his talk." His mentor was partial to speaking Latin, which he called 'the music of the spheres.' Born in February, 1564, he was only twenty-nine when he died in May, 1593. His memory lingers on.
Uneven & frustrating.......2006-03-28
This book seems to have been written mainly for an audience of professional Marlowe scholars. General readers will find it frustrating and confusing. His writing often wanders all over the place. For example, in reference to Marlowe's activities as spy, Honan writes, "He involved himself in some duplicity, if not in faithlessness and treachery, with regard to fellow scholars at Cambridge" (109), suggesting that Marlowe may have betrayed some of his fellow students with Catholic sympathies. But the point is frustratingly dropped until some 44 pages later, when Honan observes that "we cannot be certain that he betrayed Corpus [i.e. Cambridge University] men, or lured them as a provocateur" (153), seemingly contradicting his earlier point. Because his writing tends to wander, the story of Marlowe's life is hard to follow in Honan's account. Important contexts, such as espionage under Queen Elizabeth, and patronage, are not well-explained. Honan assumes that readers already have a detailed knowledge of these subjects.
An account like this necessarily involves substantial speculation, since the documentary evidence is quite spotty. Readers need to know exactly what the historical evidence is, and where speculation begins. Honan's discussion of the documentary evidence is quite uneven. In some places he gives a detailed account, but in many other places, he simply leaves this essential information out. As a result, the reader is often wondering about the historical basis for Honan's account. He often fails to distinguish fact from speculation.
One useful feature is an appendix which reproduces some important historical documents including the so-called Baines libel and coroner's inquest of Marlowe's death.
Poetic License on Kit.......2006-03-05
A book best for people with some prior understanding of Marlowe's works and the era in which he lived. In regard to the spying done, most casual readers will be lost in the confusing cross currents of British politics, heavily influenced by religious factors, of the late 1500s. And the fact is much of Marlowe's life is lost to documented history. In a pleasing style, Professor Park Honan fills the lacunae with his informed guesses and conjectures.
The Antithesis of Shakespeare.......2006-01-29
Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare were both born in 1564 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Shakespeare lived until his 52nd year and authored over 30 plays, the acknowledged master of London theatre. But during Mr. Marlowe's lifetime, he was considered the equal of Shakespeare with the production of his plays (four of which are revived to this day, especially "Dr. Faustus"). The equality didn't last long as he was killed in a tavern brawl at the age of 29.
Mr. Marlowe was a social and religious rebel. He populated his plays with the outsiders of his day (non-Christians, homosexuals, et al) and created the anti-hero, predating John Milton's Satan in "Paradise Lost" by seven decades. And here is the rub : there is scant documentation of his life, so Mr. Honan is forced to create facts out of his interpretation of Mr. Marlowe's plays and suppositions out of the English culture of that day. There is nothing wrong with this as writers of the Elizabethan period are constantly forced into doing so (see Stephen Greenblatt's "Will in the World"-2004) but the number of "qualifiers" for the speculations on each page is staggering. This leads to superb research on the actual facts known about the Elizabethan era and a lot of guesses about Marlowe's life. All-in-all, "Christopher Marlowe : Poet and Spy" gives the reader the sense of the man, if not definitive knowledge of his days. An accurate but fictional take of the playwright is Lisa Goldstein's fantasy epic, "Strange Devices of the Sun and Moon" (1993) where Mr. Marlowe's spy career is a major plot device.

Book Description
In what may be the longest, and most poignant, letter to a relative from a soldier in the Civil War, this authoritative book recounts the bloody, three-day battle in the summer of 1863. Great Resouce.......2005-09-21
I teach history and government. I use this book every day in class. The kids love the trivia and I find it puts a human stamp on our mythical leaders. This is a great resouce book.
A Fun Read.......2002-02-25
This was my President's Day gift to myself. I heard the author interviewed on a local radio station, found the book at a local store, and have thoroughly enjoyed it all. The section with questions on the First Ladies is especially interesting. Was also interested in the material about the pre-presidential careers of these guys. I would recommend this to political junkies, or to anyone even remotely interested in US history.
Nice way to learn history.......2002-01-12
We have had some lousy presidents, but this is not a lousy book. Even the bad presidents were interesting to read about. I knew a lot of the answers to the questions, but some of this material was totally new to me. I like the sort of book that entertains you and educates too. I think the best part was that all the most recent presidents were included, George W. too.
Lots of Juicy Tidbits.......2001-12-10
I have been reading this aloud with my kids, so I'm happy to say it is a CLEAN book, but it does have some really neat questions about the presidents' personal lives, such as their hobbies, family life, sports they played, school, military service, and so forth. I was really impressed with so much information about some of the lesser known presidents like Franklin Pierce and Millard Fillmore and others. Obviously the author likes collecting the really quirky bits of info that make history interesting. I gather the book must have been in print before the events of September 11 2001.
All the Juicy Tidbits Your Teacher Forgot to Tell You.......2001-11-07
I thought I knew a lot about US history, but I kept stumbling across questions that had answers that really surprised me. This quiz book is a barrel of fun, lots of juicy tidbits (yeah, Monica is here), all the gossipy details you wish your history teacher had told you. My favorite part was the end, which has 20 questions about each o the presidents, including George W.
