Not terribly in-depth guide book to symbols in art. Nicely if simply illustrated, and is organized into these categories: Abstract signs, animals, artefacts, Earth and sky, human body and dress, and plants.
Will be helpful to the art history student, but it would be more helpful if additional specific artworks were referred to in each entry. All in all, good to have. Anyone researching above the high school level will need plenty more references, but this is a helpful springboard to further research or is useful as a quick source of simple answers to quandries like, "what the heck is the meaning of the hands on that Buddha statue?"

How could anyone write a "I Hate" book; what kind of human beings are we?
I have not read this book , but I skimmed through it at a bookstore to see the contents. It's just pure garbage and belongs in the trashcan. If you don't like someone, keep quiet about it and don't try to exploit them and make money off their personal lives.

Why would anyone want to waste their time on this book? First of all, if you don't like Kathie Lee, then why bother. Second, just because Kathie Lee has a successful career and a good life does not mean that everyone should be trying to pull her down. This writer needs to find something else to write about!

Beware the "authorised biography".......2004-12-13
While this is a great book for Cox fans, it was not nearly as informative or insightful as I had hoped.
On the plus side, it's full of extended interviews with Cox and photos from throughout his career. That alone makes it worth reading for the hard-core Cox fan.
But the authorized nature of the book means that we generally get Cox's side of the story and nothing else. It's certainly revealing to hear his account of how he was removed from the production of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", but an authoritative biography would surely have included Universal Pictures' side of the story (or Terry Gilliam's) as well.
Basically the book consists of a film-by-film account of Cox's career. Virtually no time is given to his childhood or pre-film life (Cox is already at UCLA on page 16, the chapter on "Repo Man" starts on page 25, and these pages are not particularly dense in terms of text). The behind-the-scenes stories of each film's production are generally interesting (fascinating in the case of "Fear and Loathing"), but, as mentioned, everything is strictly from Cox's viewpoint, and the critical assessment of each film proceeds similarly. While nobody likes to read an artist's biography that trashes his work, the feeling I'm left with is a desire for a little more balance and objectivity.
Towards the end, the author pontificates at length about how artistically and morally superior Cox is to the debased Hollywood star system. If there's one thing the punk movement (and its aftermath) have shown, it's that nobody has a stronger moral opposition to money and fame than he who has neither. While Cox is an important, creative and underrated movie director, any arguments made on his behalf in this book are severely compromised by the juvenile spirit of sour grapes that sets in at the end, and the book ends on a note that seems more appropriate for a 15-year-old's journal entry rather than a serious biography.
Still, if you're a Cox fan, this book is worth getting for the extended interviews and great photos.
Major Work about a Major Artist.......2000-07-26
Alex Cox is one of the most interesting, entertaining and enlightening film-makers of our time. His Repo Man remains a major work, the first film to truly explore the hardcore punk underground and without a doubt the best film Emilio Estevez ever did. While that film and Sid & Nancy remain Cox's best known works, his many other films are all worthy of critical inspection and this book delivers. Stephen Davies obviously knows his subject, picking up the director's concerns about Central and South American politics, the military industrial complex and other burning issues. And we finally get to hear Cox's side of the controversy surrounding the screenplay for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The book explores each of Cox's films in depth and presents the director's opinions on them as well as interesting back-stage stories from those who worked on the films. Dennis Hopper's foreward is a riot and worth the price of admission in itself. This book is an incredible piece of work that any fan of cutting edge film should own.

Mind numbing presentation; For beginners only (if they can stay awake).......2006-10-31
This is probably the worst learning tool I've ever purchased. The entire presentation consists of you watching a cursor move around on the Reason screen while listening to a sleep-inducing monotone voiceover. I've downloaded much more helpful podcasts for free. I'm giving it two stars because I did pick up a tip or two and it was a great sleep aid. The training materials that come with Final Cut Pro are good examples of how a training CD should be structured. I understand Native Instruments has produced an excellent Kontakt 2 tutorial CD as well. CSi would do well to study these examples and create user-paced interactive tutorials. Also, this disk is rated as being suitable for the intermediate/advanced levels --- it is not. All in all, I'd have to say you'd be much better off reading the Reason user manual.

Very promising, but..........2005-01-22
I purchased this as part of a package that included the book "Reason 2.5 Power!" I was excited about this interactive tool, but when I put in the CD and installed the program, it requested a serial number. I tried everything on the DVD style case and the CD itself and nothing worked. When I went into the root directory of the CD I found the readme file and that's where it stated that the serial number was on the registration card. To my dismay, there wasn't one! I tried to go to the URL address it gave me from the ReadMe file and it was non-existent. The email address for tech support was also non-existent. So, I decided to just play the QT movie files and they worked just fine, but there was obviously a reason for the pauses throughout the movie, maybe referencing something to the program that I can't launch. I found a reference to the Thomson website so I can download some files to follow along with the tutorial, but these too were not available. I am waiting for a response from one of their representatives since they seem to be the only contact for this problem.
The actual files are easy to view with QT, and the audio is clear and understandable. Having gone through over half the movie files, I am getting a much better understanding of Reason. The screen captures of the presentation are a little bewildering. It seems that the author captured the Reason interface from several different computers. Some were captured using a MAC, others from a PC. Thanks to Propellerhead software, the interface is nearly identical. If I had my serial number, was able to download the tutorial files from the Thomson website and, the links that were given in the ReadMe file actually worked, I would give this training cd a five star rating.

I love you, Micah.......2002-07-01
I know its just a book, but there's no other way to explain what Micah does other than calling it magic. Just give the book a chance and I promise you will experience the same magic that I have felt through Micah's eloquent writing. However, while the majority of the tricks are simple and, to be honest, somewhat worthless, there is one that I found simply mind-altering. You can see for yourself, but the trick where you disappear and end up in the closet is truly astonishing. I still haven't left.
the best close-up magic book for a beginner.......2002-03-05
The tricks here, especially the card tricks, are very good and very classic, and (amazingly) to not require advanced manipulation techniques. A beginner can learn all of them in a few days by following Micah's step-by-step instructions. This is -not- one of the usual run of close-up magic books which seem to randomly mix trivial self-working tricks and professional-level slights, usually with far from sufficient explanation and no orderly plan for learning.
This book won't make you an expert, but is definitely the very best one to get if you'd like to learn the basics. I hope it stays in print forever!

A great book for anyone to share with friends........1998-09-20
I was exposed to St. Ex in the ninth grade by my French teacher. He had us read the "Little Prince". My dream was to be a pilot and I could relate to the story. Going through college I read other books by St. Ex. and have been a fan ever since. I am a pilot and his writing touch the heart and soul of the reader. Both from physical experience and from spiritual wanderings.
One could call this the essential guide to St. Ex. The selections cover his early years in the airmail service and through his patriotic devotion to duty and his countryman and the fall of France. These are real life adventures with true heros doing what they must for honor and duty serving a new need of mankind delivering the mail, and flying against the odds.
Read it, it's about much more than the early adventure of flying the mail. It's sets one to contemplating as well.

Since the death of Franco in 1975, Spain has made a successful transition to democracy. This book looks at what that transition has meant for the Spanish people. Drawing on national surveys taken in 1978, 1980, 1984, and 1990, the authors explore three questions: What is the basis of the new regime's political legitimacy? How did Spanish democracy move from the conservative center-right coalition that engineered the transition to the socialist government that consolidated it? And why is political participation so low among Spaniards?
The answers to the first two questions highlight the ambiguity built into the political contrast with the Franco regime and a certain appreciation of the material accomplishments of authoritarianism, the pivotal role of the king in opting for democracy while symbolically spanning traditional and modernizing forces, and finally a movement from foundational issues to economic and social concerns. In response to the third question, the authors illuminate the participatory shortfall in Spanish politics by comparing Spain with Brazil and Korea, two post-authoritarian societies where political involvement is much higher. They consider long-term structural factors as well as short-term strategic actions that have contributed to low civic engagement.
