Valued Book.......2002-05-18
This book is one collection of the Rose is Rose comic strips that should be running on your newspaper. Buy it to see what you are missing.
Heartwarming and Funny.......2002-02-17
Pat Brady is a very expressive artist and I absolutely love these comic strips!
Rose is Rose is Wonderful.......2001-10-24
Although I admit to being a long time Calvin and Hobbes fan, I have to say that I've grown to prefer Rose is Rose. I love the strip and all of it's sweetness - even selfish cousin Clem. I've seen a lot of people compare this strip to Calvin but I have to say that Pasquale holds his own. While Calvin and his father have anything but a loving relationship, Pasquale worships his father and the teasing between the two is always a gentle sort.
For anyone who loves a family strip without biting sarcasm this is the book for you.
Irresistible is Right.......2001-06-08
If you bought this Rose Is Rose book then you've probably purchased some previous books. If not, then what are you waiting for?! This book reminds us that life does not always have to be so grim. We all share humanity. This comically reminds us that life is a treasure and we should value it like gold. You will love this book, as I do. Enjoy your reading.
Simply Irresistible!.......2001-05-06
Though my local paper does not get this strip, even I can tell that it has recently blossomed. In its earlier stages it seemed cutsie and corny, now that Pasquale is talking, and Rose's alter-egos are in full gear, we are full experiencing the world of this adorable family. Roses frequent meetings with her ladybig, Pasquales guardian angels slip ups and Jimbo's constant teasing (Pasquale! Did you remember to pay the moon bill?") have kept me laughing and sympathizing. A strip to go down in history.

Problems resulting from tax law blunders aren't new. Tax attorney Michael Savage contends, however, that small businesses that run afoul of the Internal Revenue Service and face big fines are often not guilty of malfeasance; rather, he says, they simply lack the wherewithal to handle complicated regulations as competently as their larger counterparts. In Don't Let the IRS Destroy Your Small Business: 76 Mistakes to Avoid, Savage lays out major potential stumbling blocks and in easy-to-understand language outlines ways to avoid them.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Text.......2006-07-06
Simply an excellent little book, concise and written in a very clear format. Indeed, not making just one of the many mistakes the author comments upon could save your business thousands in taxes, fines and penalties.
Too much exaggeration.......2001-09-04
The contents in this book are not really new. The author tends to exaggerate things quite a bit. Examples in the book may be true, but grossly sensationalized and hardly applicable to any real world case.
Great book - concise and helpful.......2000-08-26
This book outlines 76 ways that small businesses often get in trouble with the IRS. A lot of these mistakes are very tempting to make -- in fact, one can argue that it's the tax law that's the problem in many cases, not the business practice. Nonetheless, the author makes clear the IRS position on these mistakes, and shows how damaging the mistakes can be when the IRS wins in tax court over the business owners.
Every small business owner should read this book. It's remarkably easy to scan and absorb, though the topics are often quite complex at their root. This book cuts through the complexity and makes clear what the dangers are. As the author writes in the introduction, "If things go wrong, it gets expensive. For this reason, you should know *where* things go wrong. Because usually they go wrong in the same place. To see your taxes doubled because you made the same mistake that thousands of other people made before you does not make good business sense."
Insightful Info about All Areas of the Tax Code.......1999-11-02
All around great advise that covers practically every area of the tax code for a small business. My accountant can always answer a specific question but he has never put all my posible tax issues into one big picture. This book does that!
It covers all the major areas of the tax code such as paying employees vs. contractors, entertainment and meal expenses, retirement plans, loans, and S-Corporations. In all these areas are descriptions of the tax law, how the IRS enforces it, and what can go wrong.
Ignore the low ratings from the tax anarchist. This book is 5 stars!
New information worth buying.......1999-04-23
I thought I had read it all when it comes to preparing yourself for the IRS, but I was wrong, there is new and useful information in here. It saved me money right away and I can see all the mistakes I have made in the past year in this book. If you have been in business you have made these mistakes. Good Book, could be longer.

The best biography of Evita.......2006-12-28
When I was assigned to read this book I was afraid it was going to be a boring biography that went nowhere. I was pleasantly surprised at how well written and interesting her life is. Evita shaped the culture of Argentina and brought the country on the world stage. She was laughed at in the capitals of Europe on the Rainbow tour and her society was riddled with corruption. Her life is well shown here and it provides an excellent look into the culture of the country. Fraser's translation is very well done and Navarro's work is the definition of academic scholarship. For those who want to learn about Evita there is no better book.
La Razon di mi Vida - the violent myth of Eva Peron.......2006-04-06
One of the most misunderstood, adored, reviled women in the 20th century ... Eva Peron's fierce anger and rage against injustice fueled an ascent from third rate actress to First Lady supreme. Many myths, rumors, outright lies surround her legacy. This is one book that attempts to deconstruct it all.
Evita: The Real Life of Evita Peron.......2006-03-22
Very interesting and well written but somewhat biased toward Juan and Evita Peron. There was no mention of their Swiss bank accounts and little mention of the many schoolgirls (some as young as twelve years old) that he bedded after Evita's death.
The legend lives on.......2006-03-18
The book is written with a rather academic tone of detached interest. There are few personal opinions, and the position regarding Evita is neutral. This could be either an advantage or a drawback, for Evita was both worshipped and hated by millions. In the words of one Life reporter at her death, "They were genuine and deep and demonstrated that Evita, who had contributed so strongly to the totalitarianism and bankruptcy of her country, had also won its love." There's been a lot of controversy regarding her actions during the Peron presidency. She campaigned for her husband; she chaired numerous organizations to help the poor, and appeared on one end to be the giver of goodwill. On the other end of the spectrum, she got rid of all political enemies, spent lavishly.
In account of what she achieved in her life, it's really surprising to think that Eva had no education past the 8th grade; she arrived in Buenos Aires at the age of 15 with nothing but the clothes on her back, endured years of misfortune as an actress, to be permanently entombed as the savior, the termagant, the heroine, and villain, but always, Evita, the legend. In fact, at her death, the phrase, "permanently entombed" became rather literal. She was embalmed by Dr. Pedro Ara, Professor of anatomy, who specialized in what, at the time, he called, "the art of death". Years later, as Peron was ousted from power, her body, a monument of the age of Peronism, a symbol from which her supporters could rally, was hidden away by political rivals. The entire process increased the enigma that had always shrouded Eva, and will continue to do so into eternity.
As much as her biography does her no justice, it highlighted the main points in her life, gave information regarding her ambiguous past and even more ambiguous future, and was a wholly well written, well documented book. It's not a book for pleasure reading, even less for research. It's simply a book for a person who is curious about a subject and truly wants to learn. Because it has no plot, nor any high points of drama, it's not a book that has you "racing through the pages", but plowing stolidly through it. Eva Peron is strangely reminiscent of both "From Emperor to Citizen", the autobiography of last emperor of China, and "the Stories of my experiments with truth", the final work of Ghandi. Although both are written from different perspectives, both reflect the lives of national leaders, who during their time changed themselves and others. Today, Eva lays in an unmarked tomb in Recoleta Cemetery, supposedly bomb-proof, fire proof, and buglar proof. It reflects a fear, a fear that the body of the woman who had inspired so much hate, and love, would disappear, while the woman herself, or rather her insuppressible myth, would live on.
Definitely not Evita the musical.......2005-08-03
This book puts into perspective many of the myths and half-truths surrounding the life and death of Eva Peron. If you believe that she was 1/4 of what the musical and the movie said she was, for heaven's sake, read this book! This is the fifth book I've read on this subject and it is by far the best. I would encourage you to follow it up with "Evita In My Own Words" - which is her alleged deathbed manuscript.
Book Description
Nearly a quarter-century after the fall of Saigon, the memory of America's defeat in Vietnam continues to haunt the national psyche. In Vietnam Shadows, former war correspondent Arnold Isaacs turns his reportorial eye to the conflict since Vietnam, covering the skirmishes and firefights of a cultural battle -- some would say stalemate -- that refuses to end.
Isaacs takes on the popular myths and misconceptions about Vietnam -- among them the mistaken belief that the U.S. military lacked clear goals. ("In many conversations with U.S. officers in Vietnam, I do not recall discovering any who were in doubt about what they were supposed to do there.") He exposes the myth of the MIAs -- a myth sustained not only by grieving relatives but also by professional con men of breathtaking cynicism -- and shows how the many false MIA stories may nonetheless reveal a deeper truth: "We lost something in Vietnam and we want it back." Isaacs talks to the veterans unable to forget the war no one wanted to talk to them about. He explores the class divisions deepened by a conflict in which the privileged avoided service that an earlier generation had embraced as a duty. (691 Harvard alumni died in World War II, Isaacs points out; in Vietnam, nineteen.) And he shows how the "Vietnam Syndrome" continues to affect nearly every major U.S. foreign policy decision, from the Persian Gulf to Somalia, Bosnia, and Haiti.
Capturing the ironic legacies of a war that abounds in them, Isaacs introduces the "new Americans" -- the Vietnamese, Thais, and Cambodians -- who fled Indochina to settle in the U.S., where fashion spreads in the New York Times Magazine feature models photographed in Vietnamese settings wearing "Indo-chic clothes" that sell for four to five years' income for the average Vietnamese. ("Farm girl's jacket in 'periwinkle blue' raw silk: $1,460 by Richard Tyler.") And he recounts the experiences of Americans who have returned to Vietnam, only to find their former enemies turned entrepreneurs -- such as the operators of a popular Saigon bar called Apocalypse Now.
Isaacs reports and writes for those whose lives were changed by the war and also for a generation that has come of age without memory of Vietnam but who nonetheless feels its shadow in the country they soon will lead.

Customer Reviews:
Exceptionally absorbing commentary.......2005-06-20
The author spent two or so years as a correspondent in Vietnam (1972-1975) The book has eight chapters, each discussing a factor involved with the aftermath to the war and how the war has affected events and people since its end and up to 1997. When the book was written the desire to avoid "another Vietnam" was strong. Our present President has however disregarded that desire and one would like to have an updated version of the author's thoughts on how Vietnam has affected the present war--which has proven the prescience of the first President Bush in avoiding a prolonged first Gulf War. This book is as fine a discussion of the aftereffects of Vietnam as I have read--I only wish it were updated to consider the events since 1997.
Still a Valuable Book.......2004-12-21
Even though this book was published in 1997, it is still a valuable book, and still relevant to American society in 2004.
First, the National League of Families of American Prisoners and Missing in Southeast Asia is *still* peddling its misinformation. I quote from their web site: "The League's highest priority is resolving the live prisoner question. Official intelligence indicates that Americans known to have been alive in captivity in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia were not returned at the end of the war. *In the absence of evidence to the contrary, it must be assumed that these Americans may still be alive.*" (emphasis supplied) In _What's the Matter With Kansas_ Thomas Frank mentions Vietnam veterans who pretend that there are live American prisoners of war in Vietnam. Obviously, there are still many people in the USA who are intent on continuing the war against Vietnam by any means they can.
Second, the fawning sycophancy that was seemingly the order of the day after Ronald Reagan died gave powerful evidence of how many Americans prefer a pleasant fantasy to the unpleasant truth. That does not bode well for the way the USA deals with the legacy of the war in Vietnam.
Third, the way a group of shameless right-wing ideologues was able to smear John Kerry about his war-time record during the recent "election" not only demonstrates how far such ideologues will go in their efforts to rewrite history about the war in Vietnam but also what the USA will allow such people to get away with.
So, this book is very much worthwhile reading seven years on, although, sad to say, the people who most need to read it probably wouldn't accept it because it doesn't tell them what they want to hear (Americans in general seem to be inordinately insistent on being told what they want to hear).
I do have a few small complaints, but 4 1/2 stars is not an option in this reviewing system.
For one thing, the author seems to give the impression at one point (inadvertent, I'm sure), that if you didn't serve in Vietnam you were somehow guilty of something. I joined the US Navy rather than be drafted, and yes, staying out of a war that I thought was quite pointless was part of my decision. Am I supposed to feel guilty about that?!?! I don't think so.
For another, the author seems to give people like James Webb too much credit for sincerity when they get self-righteous about those who didn't go to Vietnam. Somehow, those people don't seem to get upset about the chicken-hawks who act as though it was peachy keen for other people to go die in Vietnam as long as they didn't have to risk doing so. The author does mention the chicken-hawks, but he doesn't really point out the hypocrisy of people like Webb where they are concerned.
A few small flaws notwithstanding, this is an excellent book.
Insightful.......2004-03-09
The book discusses about the Vietnam War topics that have been ignored in the past: the veterans, the wall, the syndrome, the myth and the refugees. Basically it is about the long-term effects of the war on the public and the nation.
It is a well-written and conceived book that explained why the Vietnam War would not go away in the minds of many Americans. Part of it is related to the fact that Americans, especially veterans have invested so much in the process and have not gotten anything out of it, except physical and emotional scars. And to this day many still have not recovered from these scars.
Vietnam is still with us and will be so for a long time!.......2000-09-25
Mr. Isaacs has done a credible job of detailing the ongoing tragedy of Vietnam and its impact upon our politics, our foreign policy, our citizenry, Vietnamese immigrants and many veterans groups and issues, especially the POW/MIA issue. THat he does so in so short a book is a testament to the emotional power of his writing. However, the chapters are uneven, some are so short as to be barely worth mentioning, others give us an overview of issues without going to deeply in to them. The most interesting chapters are the ones on the POW/MIA issue and our ongoing Vietnam syndrome. In the POW/MIA chapter, the author nicely skewers those who continue to perpetrate the myth that there are still POW's in Vietnam. Inded this is one of the greatest postwar tragedies, that many groups feed off the grief of families by keeping this issue at the forefront of their conciousness (and their pocketbook) when in fact there is no proof, living or otherwise of any remaining POW's in Nam. Isaacs points out the folly of the issue and the fact that it keeps us from both reconciling with the families of those lost and normalizing relations with a country that is eager to put the war behind it as well. But the author points out that the war was never really about Vietnam, but more about us, and that is the real tragedy and the source of many of the misunderstandings of the war. The longer the war went on, the more the issue became saving American pride and face, and the less the issue was the people of Vietnam and the impact the war had upon them. Indeed, most postwar discussion focuses on what might have happened if we had either pulled out earlier or let the military unleash its full power, instead of talking about what did happen and why. This only lends credence to the authors point that the issues of the war have not yet been resolved, nor are they likely to be for a long time. If you are looking for a good overview of post Vietnam war issues, this is an excellent source book; but if you want to go into depth on one then its probably not what you are looking for, though it is useful in framing issues. Since this book came out there has been a huge output of information on the war, much of it excellent, though much of it falls into the trap of discussing what ifs instead of what did happen. And those of us who follow politics have heard the frequent references to the Vietnam syndrome by Clinton, BUsh, Reagan and others, both in describing past conflicts, i.e. the GUlf War, BOsnia, Haiti, and in framing future foreign invlovements, i.e. John McCain. Though the author only glazes over the issue i nthe syndrome chapter, another tragedy of Vietnam is that the U.S still has no recognizable foreign policy i nthe post cold war world. Good, if too short of a book, though unquestioably many will find fault with the author's politcs, even in a post war context.
a reader from New Jersey.......1999-12-16
I almost stopped reading this book after the first 3 chapters. While Dr. Isaacs claimed in his preface that he was attempting to be objective in his discussions, subtle derogatory(and I believe unfounded) comments about conservatives, particularly Ronald Reagan, made me doubt his objectivity. I have read enough books with obvious biases against either liberals or conservatives; I felt I didn't want to waste more time reading another one. I'm searching for the truth about the war, not rhetoric. However, I continued to read and I am glad I did. In particular, the chapters on the MIA/POW issue and Southeast Asians immigrants and refugees are absolutely excellent. Given my desire to learn about this period of history (I'm 36 years old and was only 12 years old in 1975), the chapter, Learning about the War, is also very interesting. While I don't feel the first 3 chapters offer anything new to the Vietnam discussion, chapters 5 - 8 are a treasure.
Book Description
The Mezonic Agenda deals with some of the most pressing topics in technology and computer security today including: reverse engineering, cryptography, buffer overflows, and steganography. The book tells the tale of criminal hackers attempting to compromise the results of a presidential election for their own gain. The accompanying CD contains real, working versions of all the applications described in the fictional narrative of the book. Computer users, programmers, IT professionals, and policy makers need to be made aware of the risks involved with deploying new technologies and see how attackers can leverage these technologies for their own purposes. While the story in The Mezonic Agenda is fictional, the technologies, exploits, and hacking techniques are all very real.
* The first cyber-thriller" that allows the reader to "hack along" using the accompanying CD which contains working versions of all the applications described in the book.
* To be published in October 2004 when interest in the American Presidential election will be at its highest.
* Provides IT professionals with the most advanced, timely, and accurate information available on security exploits in a fascinating, fictional narrative.
Customer Reviews:
Learn How The Bad Guys Do It.......2006-03-12
This is an easily understood novel that is both interesting and informative about how hackers attack applications. The first half of the book is a simple story that keeps your interest, and the second half is a text book on the history of voting machines and techniques for reverse engineering computer software. You have to want to learn something about hacking to read this book.
Scary that it is true!.......2005-02-19
The Mezonic Agenda: Hacking the Presidency is a novel, but it can happen.
this is scary as it is about technology that goes unchecked.
A good 'edu-tainment' book..........2005-01-26
When I first saw this book I was skeptical of the writing. How could a book about computers and the Presidency be even remotely entertaining? When I looked at it closer and discovered the educational prospects of the book, I got a lot more excited. The story is a bit minimalist, although well-written and enjoyable. I found the story more suspenseful because something like this could actually be possible, given the insecurity and non-accountability of existing e-Voting systems. Security professionals may not learn anything from the book or the accompanying material, but for the general populace with some computer knowledge, there is some 'edu-tainment' value here.
Well written and recommended reading.
Good fiction with additional educational value.......2004-12-28
The U.S. moved to electronic voting for the presidential election in 2004. At the same time hackers continue to prove again and again that there are always ways to get into a system and change data. The question now becomes one of whether a really determined hacker can alter the results of such a presidential election. This is the premise of The Mezonic Agenda. It is a fictional story of Chad Davis who spearheads an effort to penetrate the defenses of e-vote hardware from Advice Software, Inc. It is a good read but is also an educational story that allows you to learn many of the fundamentals of software deconstruction, how it is used to hide information, and other ways a hacker might penetrate a system.
In addition to the book there is a CD that includes a game competition to begin in 2005. Hidden within the book and the files on the CD is information that if correctly decrypted allows you to elect yourself president! This is a unique twist that has you directly applying the methods you learn in the book.
The Mezonic Agenda is a recommended read as good fiction, an educational book, and just plain fun. Pick up a copy and enjoy.
"Mezonic Agenda": A good read.......2004-12-07
The book, "The Mezonic Agenda: Hacking the Presidency," is not your ordinary read. It is a mystery, hidden in a puzzle, wrapped around a riddle--no joking.
It is important to mention that the lessons taught by the authors via their novel are meant to "...educate, and empower the reader with information about software security and the challenges of implementing modern voting systems...." as quoted from the novel's Preface (page xvii), not to provide a "how to" seminar on hacking.
The book contains 368 pages; however, the novel only takes up 241 of those pages. The book is divided into two parts: Part I is the story itself; Part II is entitled "The Technology behind The Mezonic Agenda," followed by five appendices, each covering their own subject. And, all quite interesting themselves.
The novel's main character, Chad Davis, is a world famous computer security expert, often called upon to beta test the newest and greatest security software by developers. This time, though, Chad is invited to Washington to provide critical, expert testimony on the security and validity of software company Advice Software, Inc., e-vote software. This software is projected to be utilized during the 2004 Presidential Election--high stakes, indeed!
But, that is not all. You are involved, too. Yep, you are right in the middle of it. The novel comes with a CDROM chockfull of files--revealed only when you solve the riddles of the three files provided. In fact, there is a contest which challenges you to decipher all the clues within the story and then use what you have learned to have yourself elected President of the United States. The winners receive a free pass to Black Hat USA 2005. The files require a PC, by the way, but the methods discussed are applicable to all computing environments.
The novel was a good read and held my interest, not really what I expected from a mathematician and a chemical engineer. Of course, the technical parts of the story are quite fascinating and very intriguing...and the interactive piece of the story furnishes some good fun!
Bottom line: Worth the read? Yes. Do I recommend it? Yes.
