Book Description
As samurai were losing their bearings in a time of change, Yuki brought back the demonic spirit of vengeance. And the good part about this last volume of Lady Snowblood is that she saved her most hated targets for last. Yet, in the midst of a maelstrom of sex and violence, the reader will still catch a few glimpses of warmth and human compassion. That's because Kazuo Koike, the creator of the popular Lone Wolf and Cub manga, knows how to build around good characters, and Lady Snowblood is certainly no exception. See how it all ends in Volume 4, the second part of "Retribution."
Customer Reviews:
Honorable retribution for Lady Snowblood at the end of this manga series.......2006-07-16
This is the fourth and final volume in the "Lady Snowblood" magna written by Kazuo Koike ("Lone Wolf & Cub") and illustrated by Kazu Kamimura. This is the story of Syura Yuki (which roughly translates as "snow of hell"), who is a demonic spirit of vengeance sent forth into the world by the mother who died giving her birth. Set during the early years of the Meiji Restoration, Lady Snowblood has already brought down one of her intended victims but she has saved her two most hated targets for last in "Retribution, Part 2." This is not the epic of "Lone Wolf & Cub," but it is a memorable tale of blood and sex from one of the greatest manga writers:
Episode 12, "Bloom of Youth, White Uniform, and Song of Tears," is a strange little story in which Yuki has to take refuge at a hospital, posing as a nurse, after an assassination. There was a witness to the murders, a young boy named Ryochi, but he is clearly touched in the head and Lady Snowblood decides she does not have to kill him. But the boy is captivated by the "twinkle" of the hidden sword in Lady Snowblood's special umbrella, as well as by the handgun that goes ba-boom. To stop a tragedy from happening, Yuki will have to reveal herself.
Episode 13, "Indecent Photographer's Confession," has Yuki on the trail of Seiki Nishiomi, a photographer who lures women from rich homes into posing for photographs and then taking pictures of her being assaulted to blackmail the husbands. However, this one becomes a question of who is trying to trap who as the photograph has a secret that might change everything. Then again, with Lady Snowblood death is not always punishment enough for the wicked.
Episode 14, "An Account of How Gishiro Strikls Back," finds that the "Syura Yuki" stories being written by Gaikotsu Miyahara to lure the remaining two targets out into the open finally bears fruit. Only it appears these best laid plans might backfire and now the old writer is a trap for the woman he considers his daughter. Fortunately there are traps within traps with this one and Lady Snowblood takes another step along her path of vengeance.
Final Episode, "Bamboo's Tears," is a title inspired by the bamboo ladies, or embracing baskets, that were made in Japan at that time. Lady Snowbird has one person left to kill to complete her quest for vengeance and he is a maker of bamboo ladies. However, there is a complication to this last kill in that he has a daughter, and Yuki must do something to end the cycle of violence. Just remember, "The woman on her path of vengeance has thrown away her heart long ago."
Once you finish the four volumes of "Lady Snowblood" the magna, you can check out the two cinematic efforts, which actually came first. "Shurayukihime" ("Lady Snowblood," a.k.a. "Lady Snowblood: Blizzard from the Netherworld") was released in 1973 with Meiko Kaji as the title character. It focuses on Yuki's efforts to avenge her parents and to kill the three people who mother did not get. The script is by Koike and Kazuo Uemura and you will find scenes that are both familiar and different from the manga. A second film, "Shurayukihime: Urami Renga" ("Lady Snowblood 2: Love Song of Vengeance") came out in 1974 and finds the government offering Yuki a reprieve from execution if she will assassinate an anarchist for them. The movies are decent enough, and you will recognize a song from Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" in the the first one, but of course the magna provide more depth and detail (not to mention sex and violence).

Book Description
Hollywood culture has been dismissed as insignificant for so long that film buffs and critics might be forgiven for forgetting that for two decades an unprecedented interaction of social and cultural forces shaped American film. In this probing account of how a generation of industry newcomers attempted to use the modernist art of the cinema to educate the public in anti-Fascist ideals, Saverio Giovacchini traces the profound transformation that took place in the film industry from the 1930s to the 1950s. Rejecting the notion that European emigres and New Yorkers sought a retreat from politics or simply gravitated toward easy money, he contends that Hollywood became their mecca precisely because they wanted a deeper engagement in the project of democratic modernism.
Seeing Hollywood as a forcefield, Giovacchini examines the social networks, working relationships, and political activities of artists, intellectuals, and film workers who flocked to Hollywood from Europe and the eastern United States before and during the second world war. He creates a complex and nuanced portrait of this milieu, adding breadth and depth to the conventional view of the era's film industry as little more than an empire for Jewish moguls or the major studios. In his rendering Hollywood's newcomers joined with its established elite to develop a modernist aesthetic for film that would bridge popular and avant-garde sensibilities; for them, realism was the most effective vehicle for conveying their message and involving a mass audience in the democratic struggle for progress.

Book Description
Thinking Like An Entrepreneur is a yes-you-too-can-achieve-your-dream-power-of-positive-thinking self-help motivational book coupled with some very serious business analysis. While some people dream of coming up with a hot idea and taking the next great Internet company public, this book focuses on building a real business with real profits. Such businesses can make the founder worth millions of dollars in only a few short years without the company ever becoming public. This book is written for entrepreneurs who want to make their company profitable ASAP.
But to build such a business demands an understanding of simple financial and business decision making. Thinking Like An Entrepreneur teaches you to understand the fundamentals that underlie intelligent decision making for your small company.
The book covers many important topics (cash flow, profit margins, and the time value of money, etc.) and will help get a new entrepreneur started. Whether or not you wish to grow your company to a substantial size, this book will help you succeed in business by teaching you to think more like successful entrepreneurs--to make fundamentally sound decisions. Some of the book's highlights:
If you choose not to grow your business, but just to do "your own thing," Chapter 23 covers becoming a consultant in some depth. This is a viable avenue for computer programmers, graphic artists, videographers, and, of course, web page designers today. The chapter is a short primer for deciding if you want to become a consultant and is an introduction to some of the basic issues consultants face. The new area of online consulting is briefly discussed.
If you choose not to start from scratch, but rather, buy an existing business, Chapter 26 goes into detail into buying a business. You will learn how to value a smaller company, including valuing intellectual capital. A rather lengthy chapter you might choose to skip unless you really are going to seek a business to buy.
Chapter 17 shows you why it is important to incorporate your company and discusses the option of creating an S-corporation. Issues of taxation and liability are discussed. The chapter helps you understand how to minimize your overall tax bite and get the best liability protection possible.
Chapter 9 discusses the role of personality type in building a company. It is important that you start a business that is suited to who you are as a person. A great market opportunity is not a great personal opportunity if you won't enjoy the business. This chapter is written to help you find a business suited to you.
Chapter 4 and 5 go into detail explaining how thriving businesses bootstrap themselves to financial success. You are introduced to the concept of compounding intervals and rates of return (which are further developed on Chapter 16 which is dedicated to the nature of compounding money within a business). Proprietary products are discussed. This tread of thought is continued in Chapter 12 which deals with cash flow and how cash flow issues can affect your company's growth rate. A hypothetical game company making "Lifers" is considered. These chapters alone probably make the book worth reading.
Chapter 7 discusses the author's personal views on how the Internet is changing business today and what the Internet means for Microsoft and other established companies. An easy-to-read chapter, but with no hands-on advice on how to create your site.
Chapter 13 is a comparison of the fields of computer programming and computer-based training (CBT). The goal is to get the reader to see where value is created within the type of business he or she will start.
Chapter 15 discusses the role of luck in business and explains why Bill Gates is the richest man alive today. You will learn how to play the "game" of business appropriately allowing for the role of luck.
The book is written in an irreverent fashion, and might be subtitled, "Entrepreneurship Lessons From The Movies" as the author refers to several films to make his points. Although light-hearted in fashion, the book gets a bit mathematical in a few chapters. But those chapters are well worth the read to anyone serious about building a company.
Customer Reviews:
Some useful info and an easy read.......2005-08-25
A sense of humor and sarcasm guaranteed to make you cringe, a very limited set of cases (mainly IT), examples and industry references and too many mentions of Bill Gates are the bad points of this book, but all in all I found it useful. A sort of business and entrepreneurship for dummies guide. Highly recommended starting point for those want to become business people but know that their knowledge of business basics is lacking. Perhaps not so useful for people not in this position. Sections on compounding and cashflow stick as two of the more useful.
Very good for a newbie entrepreneur.......2005-07-16
Mr Hupalo's book is a very informative read for a newbie business person or wannabe entrepreneur. He explains some of the great things about a business and why it's important to choose the correct, high margin business. The book is well written and informative but could have been edited a bit better to make the read clearer.
The chapter on corporations I don't agree with. Mr Hupalo feels all entrepreneurs should establish a corporation rather than a sole proprietorship. This is not the way June Walker feels in her excellent book: "Self Employed Tax Solutions". This book lists the advantages for an entrepreneur for using a sole proprietorship such as:
* You and your business are one and the same.
* A sole proprietor and his business use the same tax year.
* It's income or loss is your income or loss.
* It's debts and assets are your debts and assets.
* Assets, originally for personal use, can immmediately be used in your business without paperwork and without negative tax consequences, and there can be positive tax consequences without any cash outlay.
* It's the easiest, quickest, and cheapest business structure to set up and maintain with regard to recordkeeping, accounting, legal procedures, and fees.
* It does not require a separate tax return (a Corporation does).
* A sole proprietorship allows for a simple, direct deduction of home office expenses.
* A SP can immmediately reduce your other taxable income.
* A SP allows for the most advantageous tax remedy when husband and wife work in the same business.
Mr Hupalo has written a good book about business which any new entrepreneur should read but just skip the chapter which advises incorporation immediatly. For most single person businesses a Sole Proprietorship works best. After you have an employee or two, then you should think about incorporating.
Smart Choices for Entrepreneurs -- Great Stallbusting Ideas!.......2004-09-25
The title of this book is a little misleading. It is not helping you learn how to think like an entrepreneur. In fact, the book teaches you how to more accurately make assessments that entrepreneurs have to make. If you do that, your entrepreneurial success should be higher.
I like books about avoiding thought patterns that delay or derail progress, and thoroughly enjoyed this one. In many ways, the book parallels the outstanding book about personal decision-making, Smart Choices, that I strongly recommend you read as well.
Why, then, did I rate the book at four stars rather than five? Basically, the book didn't quite get the editing it deserved. There are some minor misspellings of the sort that should have been caught. More seriously, the book indulges in unnecessary vulgar language in a few places. If those things don't bother you, see this as a five star book. It certainly is in every other way.
Some of the subjects include how to overcome risk aversion, how to lay off risk, picking the type of business to go into, establishing a business model that has the best chance of success, and how to have the business match your personality and preferences. These are subjects I feel are important for any entrepreneur, and are often not covered by business books. I was especially impressed by the focus on ethics and high moral tone of the advice.
This book will have value both for people who are thinking about becoming entrepreneurs and those who are already running small businesses. Since the book often focuses on computer consulting and computer-based training, those who are in those fields will find the book to be especially valuable.
As a test of the value of the book's content, I applied the concepts to my own management consulting firm and found that the analyses were accurate and useful. So you can add management consulting as another business type for which this book is good.
One of the things I liked about the book is that it realistically encourages people to think about entrepreneurship. Even if you decide that having your own business is not for you, this book will give you a better basis for feeling confident about that decision.
If you do decide you want to buy or start a business, I suggest you share this book with your spouse and a person who already has a business in the same area. Then discuss your ideas with each of them in terms of the concepts in the book. Their feedback will help you form a more realistic view of your ideas.
A must read for existing and future biz owners.......2002-10-15
Finally a book written on entrepreneurship that has so much to offer! A guide for fledgling IT entrepreneurs as well as a resource for those faced with the myriad problems of the modern business environment. It is also an introduction to computer consulting and building a multimedia company. Readable, concise, precise, and pragmatic. The in-depth coverage and sound counsel make this a book that should be in every business person's library. I've read my copy twice. It's twenty-seven chapters of very good, easy-to-read inspirational reading. A must read for anyone thinking about starting or expanding their existing business. Highly recommended!
Entrepreneur Highly Informative.......2002-08-12
This book's got a lot of good stuff in it--those critical factors that help contribute to making good business decisions. I've already seen some improvement in business growth. In fact, the usefulness of Entrepreneur's information is a lot like Guerilla PR: Wired: both have tons of really useful info to entrepreneurs on how to build their business.

Book Description
Homosexuality is often seen as a purely urban experience, far removed from rural and small-town life. Farm Boys undermines that cliche by telling the stories of more than three dozen gay men, ranging in age from 24 to 84, who grew up in farm families in the midwestern United States. Whether painful, funny, or matter-of-fact, these plain-spoken accounts will move and educate any reader, gay or not, from farm or city.
“When I was fifteen, the milkman who came to get our milk was beautiful. This is when I was really getting horny to do something with another guy. I waited every day for him to come. I couldn’t even talk to him, couldn’t think of anything to say. I just stood there, watching him, wondering if he knew why.”—Henry Bauer, Minnesota
“When I go back home, I feel a real connection with the land—a tremendous feeling, spiritual in a way. It makes me want to go out into a field and take my shoes off and put my feet right on the dirt, establish a real physical connection with that place. I get homesick a lot, but I don’t know if I could ever go back there and live. It’s not the kind of place that would welcome me if I lived openly, the way that I would like to live. I would be shunned.”—Martin Scherz, Nebraska
“If there is a checklist to see if your kid is queer, I must have hit every one of them—all sorts of big warning signs. I was always interested in a lot of the traditional queen things—clothes, cooking, academics, music, theater. A farm boy listening to show tunes? My parents must have seen it coming.”—Joe Shulka, Wisconsin
“My favorite show when I was growing up was ‘The Waltons’. The show’s values comforted me, and I identified with John-Boy, the sensitive son who wanted to be a writer. He belonged there on the mountain with his family, yet he sensed that he was different and that he was often misunderstood. Sometimes I still feel like a misfit, even with gay people.”—Connie Sanders, Illinois
“Agriculture is my life. I like working with farm people, although they don’t really understand me. When I retire I want the word to get out [that I’m gay] to the people I’ve worked with—the dairy producers, the veterinarians, the feed salesmen, the guys at the co-ops. They’re going to be shocked, but their eyes are going to be opened.”—James Heckman, Indiana

Enjoyable Reading.......2007-06-05
I really enjoyed reading this collection of stories very much and learned quite a bit about lives of gay men who grew up on farms. Some of them went into more detail about farm life than others--some of them told more about their lives AFTER leaving the farm, but all in all they were real interesting. I've got to hand it to every one of them, I don't know if I could have 'cut it' on a farm. Suppose I wouldn't of had a choice if I had been born to a farm family--but I certainly do see where these fellas have a 'hard row to hoe' (yes, a pun but still serious) because if they DO like farm life, they wouldn't have such a good life being gay. So I can see where most of them would end up leaving. How could you live an open life?? I think someone growing up on a farm would have a much stronger viewpoint on life. It would be kind of like growing up during the Depression at any age or time period. So physical and demanding--nothing happening or getting done unless YOU do it!! Not like the urban city life I was born into. I really hand it to farm people and gained a new respect for them. They can proclaim like the Marines...."the few, the proud".
Bitter/Sweet.......2006-07-06
This book was very well-written, and very biographical eliciting a bitter-sweet and depthful authentic quality. Ones who peer into the book 'Farm Boys: Lives of Gay men From the Rural Midwest' may feel somewhat of a voyeur, but there is a purity concerning the content of this book that will leave you slightly melancholic but satisfied.
Farm Flavor.......2006-04-09
The book has interviews with Gay men who grew up in farming communities. They're arranged by date of birth, and the biographical information ranges from funny to sad, and from stories you'd like to hear more of to stories you wish they had left out. I enjoyed the chapters with the individuals who had been fully interviewed. Unfortunately, some of the chapters were short and a little off-topic.
All in all, I'm glad I read the book, but it could have been done much better. If the subjects had been interviewed instead of just sent questionnaires, they could have been kept on-topic, and not allowed to ramble on about minutia. It really could have been a good book.
Compelling Glimpse of the Rural Wonder of Gay America.......2006-03-05
I happened upon this book by chance in my university library at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI. I am working on a report for a Sociology class on the group ACT UP, and this title caught my eye while searching for that particular book. I am from the MidWest, SouthWest, MI, and though I was not raised on a farm, I grew up in a small town with very rigid conservative Christian values, and can relate heavily to it. Cetainly the book is enthralling and captivating and I have enjoyed every minute of it. I must add though I found some of it disturbing. Several of the men featured in here engaged in bestality and incest with their brothers, uncles, cousins, etc. It seems they took a rather blithe attitude toward it, as if it was part of the culture. Even though I don't prescribe to the belief molestation makes a person gay, I can't help but wonder if it influenced them towards it.
Hidden history.......2003-05-02
"Farm Boys" is a superb work of American oral history and sociology. Author Will Fellows spoke to rural gay Midwestern men of all ages, to draw out, record and give shape to their life stories. The result is a poignant and revealing mosaic-portrait that shows the rich intersections of farm life, gay culture and the American twentieth century. Of especial interest to me were the stories of those men born nearly a century ago - we have so little written testimony of what it was like to live as a gay man "back then." And while the subject is gay men, I imagine this book would also be of interest to any reader wanting to know more about rural lives and attitudes in twentieth-century America. Thank you, Mr. Fellows for all your hard work!

Book Description
For decades this comprehensive and authoritative guide has served the needs of naval officers, military analysts, congressional staffs, journalists, defense contractors, and others with an interest in the current capabilities of the U.S. Navy. The author, internationally respected naval analyst Norman Polmar, shares expertise gained from years of service as a consultant to members of Congress, secretaries of the navy, and senior naval officers. With this updated edition he reinforces a reputation of reliable excellence by accurately cataloging and updating the assets of the U.S. Navy as they exist today and by assessing the various trends that portend the navy of tomorrow.
Among the many changes incorporated into this new edition are updates on the joint strike fighter (JSF), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), the advanced swimmer delivery system (ASDS), the electric-drive DD21, and proposed conversions of Trident strategic missile submarines to land-attack missile and SEAL delivery capabilities. Also included is what may be termed a eulogy for the arsenal ship concept, with an acknowledgement that it could be resurrected if the political environment changes. From the details of the latest reorganization of the defense and navy departments to an enlightening discussion of the streetfighter concept, this is "must have" information for all who watch, serve, assess, or just care about the American navy.
Bulging with data, photographs, line-drawings, and useful appendixes, this invaluable guide carries on a long-standing tradition as the most comprehensive resource of its kind, meeting the high expectations and exacting standards of those who rely on it to stay informed and to make important decisions.

THE ANSWERS TO SO MANY NAVAL REFERENCE QUESTIONS.......2006-01-31
NOTHING HERE IS STILL CLASSIFIED SO READ THIS EDITION TO YOUR HEARTS CONTENT - JUST DON'T MAIL THEM OUT OF THE COUNTRY,
IN A NUTSHELL: REAL DETAILS AND AN INVENTORY OF ORDNANCE TOO!
Want to find out details about standard U.S. Naval defense systems? This is the book. Ideal for defense enthusiasts, analysts, historians and academic researchers, this volume has very hard to find data and info about virtually everything the U.S. Navy can float, submerge, haul, shoot, or fly.
Frankly in most countries the material here would be restricted, and in fact there is warning in the inside cover that states that; this is to be "sold in the United States, Canada and American possessions only".
A new edition comes out about 3 times per decade and includes everything but the latest, still classified, U.S. military hardware.
STILL HERE -- OKAY THERE'S MORE:
If you save the older issues, you will have a rather comprehensive chronicle of the nuts and bolts of the U.S. Navy - real interesting stuff. For instance, if you go back to say the thirteenth edition, you can find a full description of the Iowa Class Battleships and the compositions of a variety of their 16" projectiles. Want to know about the jets used in the Vietnam War? Look at the 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th editions, and you'll find cool aircraft and helicopters as well as Crusiers that still fired artillery. Would you like to see and read about the add-on, stand-off weapons from the Gulf-War era. You'll find them in editions 13-16 listed under "WEAPONS SYSTEMS". How fast or far do our missles fly? How large a warhead do they carry and what type of guidance system do they use are all included for countless systems in each and every volume of this text.
BOTTOM LINE: If this type of stuff is interesting too you, this text can take the place of counting sheep at night, as it does for me.
The good news is that NOTHING IN THIS TEXT IS STILL CLASSIFIED SO YOU CAN READ THESE VOLUMES TO YOUR HEARTS CONTENT - JUST DON'T MAIL THEM OUT OF THE COUNTRY.
A perfect overview of the units that particpated in Desert Storm and held the line near the end of the Cold War.......2006-01-07
This book covers the period from when the US Navy and US Marine Corps started to look at being drawn down following the collapse of communism through out Europe and most of the rest of the world. Also this covers the status of the fleet for that little period between 1989 and the end of Gulf War 1 (or Desert Shield/Storm/Saber). This books was written before the first base closing commission was just being conviened. So there are obvisouly errors in what bases are open, what have been closed, and what have been converted over to other types. The same is true with various ships. However, this is still a very good reference book and a great point to see where the 600-ship navy was going to have keep going if the cold war was to continue. As it is with the end of the cold war, this is also a very good book to see what sort of units there were to particpate in the various peace-keeping operations of the mid-90's when the 18th edition was published.
all ya need to know.......2002-03-11
this book is filled with litteraly everything you need to know about navy ships and other key elements.must by for naval buffs
Overpriced,overblown,over rated.......2001-09-01
Every time the Naval Institute press publishes a new edition of this book, I am astonished at the many errors that creep in. I am not sure whether the fault lies with the author or an editorial department that seemingly knows nothing about the Navy. Errors abound within this edition. A few examples:
On P.107, A photo of an aircraft carrier is described as being USS KITTY HAWK, when in reality it is USS INDEPENDENCE. Anyone with the slightest knowledge of carriers should have been able to identify the ship by class features alone--anyone who was not careless that is.
In the section on Navy organization, carrier air wings from both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets are described as being based at NAS Miramar (now a Marine Air Station) and NAS Cecil Field (closed 3 years ago). Obviously, the author could not be bothered to check the accuracy of his data and it makes the reader wonder how many other mistakes are contained within this VERY expensive work ...One would think that as the USN shrinks in size, so would a reference book on that subject, but Mr. Polmar succeeds in burying the reader in overblown and excruciating minutiae to pad his book so that it is even larger then his previous editions published at the height of the 1980s when the fleet comprised nearly 600 ships!
Everything contained within this book is available on the internet for free--with the exception of Mr. Polmar's usual egomaniacal State of the Fleet essay, which always predicts the sky is falling for the US Navy.
In sum, little here is new or useful, most of it is padded to expand the book and jack up the cost and errors abound. An amazingly average to below average work. Great pictures however--just with incorrect captions!
Beware of prior ratings.......2001-05-31
The 17th edition was just released (5/2001), so beware of the prior reader reviews dated 1999 & 1998. The 15th & 16th editions were excellent books, and this (the 17th) should be just as good (although sadly, it will chronicle the delisting of many major combatant vessels that projected power during the Cold War), but until reviewers actually read or scan the book, these reviews are not authentic.

RIGHT ON TIME.......2001-04-05
This book was given to me by a brother in queens who read it himself and once the book was opened i couldn't put it down. You can't help but apply the information that is obtained in this book in your life because he tells you how powerful you are and once that knowledge is known there is no stopping you. Women are powerful individuals who seek powerful Men. Women who don't know themselves will seek just that; a man who does not know himself. I have recommended this book to every women and man I know. It's the best piece of knowledge I have ever read!!!!
The realest book........2000-10-29

Thank you, Brother Akil, for sharing what Allah has revealed to you.
Many Black Women, including myself, have no idea what their original, God-given purpose is. Through reading this book I have a new-found sense of worth and value to my family, community, the world and ultimately my Creator.
This book is not for those of us who are not ready to take a soul-searching, scrutinizing look at ourselves in the name of understanding and ultimately change!
If you are ready to elevate your thinking and your level of consciousness, this book is definitely for you.
I have purchased this book for all of my girlfriends after it was given to me by a very dear friend. Everyone absolutely loved it and we continue to read and apply it to our lives.
