Mount Desert, Monhegan Island, Ogunquit, Mount Katahdin, Camden Harbor, the Allagash -- these names evoke varied images of Maine -- images created by such artists as Frederic E. Church, Winslow Homer, Rockwell Kent, John Marin, and Edward Hopper. For much of the 19th and 20th centuries, Maine served as both host and inspiration for a remarkable number of artists. It has been represented in almost every style and medium -- the luminist landscapes of Fitz Hugh Lane, impressionist seascapes of Willard Metcalf, abstractions by John Marin, and the realism of Andrew Wyeth's work.

For 50 years, the Farnsworth Art Museum has collected expressions of Maine by these artists and others. Works by Washington Allston, Thomas Cole, Thomas Eakins, William Harnett, Martin Johnson Heade, George Inness, Robert Salmon, Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Sully, and others attest to the depth of the Museum's 19th century collection. The 20th century is richly represented by Will Barnet, George Bellows, Marsden Hartley, Robert Henri, Robert Indiana, Louise Nevelson, Neil Welliver, Marguerite and William Zorach, and especially the Wyeth family. The museum's holdings of American impressionists are especially strong, with works by Frank Benson, Joseph DeCamp, Childe Hassam, Maurice Prendergast, and John Twachtman.

Maine in America presents a lavish selection of nearly 250 works from the Farnsworth's permanent collection of paintings, watercolors, and sculpture and traces the development of art in Maine within the larger context of American art.

In it's fifty years of existence the Farnsworth Art Museum has focused on acquiring a collection of art that represents the history of art and artists in Maine. This 256 page book is an excellent survery of their holdings from the early paintings of J Jonathan Fisher to the realist paintings of Neil Welliver.

There is a one page review of each of 84 artists followed by one to three color plates of their works held by the Farnsworth. The biographical sketch of each artist is concise and accurately describes how the artist fits into not only art in Maine but art in America from the 18th century to the present.

I love Maine art and I thoroughly enjoyed this book and learned a lot from it.

A neat collection.......2000-07-17

This book is great. It shows most of the Peanuts strips for the year of 1992. It has some awesome strips, like the one where it shows Marcie without her glasses, something I had never seen before(her eyes look just like everybody else's). The only complaint that I have is that it doesn't show most of the Sunday strips in the year. But other than that, this book is a great collection for any Peanuts fan!

H-I-S-T-O-R-Y. This book is sooo outdated, it's ridiculous. Granted, that the field of home entertainment is changing very rapidly, but this book was dated the day it hit the shelves back in 1997. The only reason it even got one star was because Ferstler does indeed have a simple way of explaining some complicated issues, but beyond that, there is almost no useful information presented here, especially 5 years past publication. Betamax! Please. Much of the information is also contrary to present ideology regarding home theater equipment (ie- Go ahead and use [less costly]speaker cable, it's okay, and Don't waste your money on power contitioning). This book is totally geared toward low-end users and I found nothing beyond the ordinary information available on dozens of web sites, for FREE. Don't even think about wasting your money.

A must-have book for serious A-V users.......2002-03-11

Ferstler's latest book, The Home Theater Companion, is a practical and insigtful guide to Audio-Visual systems. It is easy reading because Ferstler has a knack for reducing complicated subject matter into easy-to-understand language for the lay user. One particular advantage to this book is the author's extensive knowledge of audio; from this, he has been able to clearly differentiate the good from the not-so-good in the sound portion of any A-V setup. There have been some insincere criticisms of Howard's book (likely by those who have not actually read it); however, once you have absorbed it and realize the scope of his work, you will be very pleased with what you learn about this complicated subject. One suggestion, however, is the need for a follow-on update of the subject matter. The concept and technology of today's A-V systems are very dynamic; a revision to this book should be written to assure up-to-date subject matter.

More than a primer........2002-03-11

There are simplistic books on the subject; there are books obviously slanted towards off-the-wall gazillion-dollar weird systems -- and then there is this one. If you want to really understand what home theaters are all about, what is important and what isn't, take the time to read it through and absorb what the author is telling you. You will be rewarded.

Howard Ferstler's Home Theater Companion is informative, well-illustrated, and fun to read. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in setting up a home theater system or high-quality audio equipment. The emphasis is on a bargain-oriented approach - how to get maximum quality for your dollar.

This is the book for you if you are trying to figure out the answers to questions like: Should I get 2-way or 3-way speakers? Would a subwoofer improve my sound and how would I set one up? Which room should my home theater system go in? Where should I place my speakers? How powerful should my amp or receiver be? Which noise-reduction system should I use on my cassette deck? How can I add hi-fi VCR to my TV? How do I set up surround-sound? Should I get a widescreen TV? What CDs and DVDs can I use to test my system? What is an equalizer used for? Can I get speaker cable at a reasonable price? (Ferstler does a very good job of debunking very expensive speaker cables.) Should I biwire my speakers?

There are excellent discussions of room acoustics, narrow vs wide dispersion speakers, and the Allison Effect (suckout in the midbass), useful tables comparing cassette/VCR/DCC/Minidisc/DAT formats for recording and VHS/LV/DVD formats for home theater, plus glossary, appendices, and bibliography. My only criticism is that the discussion of headphones could have been a little longer.

All in all I thoroughly recommend this book. My copy is already worn through.

Home Theater Companion review.......2002-03-10

Ferstler's 1997 book now suffers somewhat from the relatively early publishing date, as the technologies of home theater have been evolving quickly.

The book's greatest strength lies in explaining the basics which underlie the flash. I believe Fersler assumes that the reader has a basic technical knowledge, and that the reader wants to learn some of the nuts and bolts before going out shopping. Therefore, folks just looking for a simple-minded buyer's and hook-up guide will be disappointed.

If, on the other hand, you want to understand some of the compromises which go into, say, speaker design, and want a discussion of the practicalities of home theater, this is a good investment.

I found that it providied me with a good grounding so that I can evaluate the cacaphony of on-line opinions.

The Guide for Strategic Account Mangement.......2005-01-18

This is a very educational book that every company should read and buy into before attempting a SAM program. I enjoyed the real world exmaples even though they did sometimes leave me feeling a bit 'sold to'(and I usually like that!)
But the reason I've only given this book 4 stars is that it's written very much for the analytical reader, an MBA who absorbes information would love this book. But I am not one of those and would like to have seen a higher emotional content and some more human aspects.
This however should not stop you from buying this book. In fact if you are considering a Strategic Account Management program you MUST read this now.

All you need to know about the real Nitti.......2007-09-09

Mars Eghigian tirelessly did his research on this one and it shows. Nitti wasn't "the Enforcer" the press had bestowed on him. He was very trustworthy, but personally lacked the violence needed to balance the brainy part in organized crime. He had no problem delegating that part. Learn about his true origins, his family, wives and son. Eghigian dispells many rumors and halftruths concerning the man who was Al's choice to substitute him whenever he was away.
I really enjoyed learning new unknown facts about Nitti. This book has helped my website shine even more.

A great book. First one on Frank Nitto. Must read Capone by Laurence Bergreen first in order to understand what is going on in this book. They really go hand in hand. Typo errors are bad but authors research is impeccable. Hope he will do another book.

All you need to know about Mr Nitto.......2006-12-16

This book finally reveals the life of Frank Nitto, Chicago gangster and eventual mob crime boss in that city after the IRS puts Capone in jail at Alacatraz. The level and amount of research in this book is amazing, Mars Eghigian has written a well balanced and meticulous book about Nitto who for so long has been in the shadow of Capone. At 528 pages it is a long read but worth the effort for true crime history buffs.

Nitto comes across as an intelligent, quick thinking criminal who also happened to be a workaholic, once invovled in the rackets, Nitto took to it like a duck in water, he was a good organizer and reader of human nature and was a steady backup to Capone who eventually came to rely heavily on Nitto's judgements and ability. The formative early years of Nitto's life is also covered well, especially his early years in New York and his relationship with his family.

The book explains clearly his role in the Chicago crime scene and there is plenty of information about his relationships with other criminals in the Chicago mob such as Capone, Ricca etc. The strange demise of Nitto and the downfall of some of his henchman is well covered and there is a good and well informed account of the eventual fate of the members of the the Chicago mob.

Excellent Biography.......2006-11-22

Being interested in this book's subject matter - Frank Nitti, Capone, Chicago in the 1920's and 30's, etc - I bought this book simply on its title, having read no reviews nor hearing anything about it. After reading this book I am surprised that there hasn't been any fanfare or at least word of mouth recommending it, especially here in Chicago. This is an extremely well-written, interesting, engaging and entertaining book. First and foremost it is a biography of Frank Nitti(o) but that story is expertly intertwined with a narrative of Chicago politics, culture, crime and many of the associated personalities on both sides of the law - with some being on either side at any given time. I won't spend time (words) chronicling all that's in this book; the author does a much better job than I ever will. My point is simply this - if you have an interest in this "era" and its "players" you will not go wrong with After Capone. In fact I would recommend this as a "prequel" to Gus Russo's excellent book, "The Outfit"
The only negative is the number of typos. Such carelessness by a publisher in this day and age is simply astounding.

F-15 Eagle: A Photo Chronicle.......2000-08-11

Although a little out of date, this is a well-researched history of the F-15 and variants. There are lots of large full-color photos and an excellent section on special, test, and NASA Eagles. Since it was published in '94 there have been a few changes and additions to the Eagle fleet, but overall a good addition to any aviation enthusiast's collection.

This book focuses on the technical aspects of the F-15 program, and gives a good overview of the competition, development, and history of the F-15. It does not cover the operational deployment of the airplane in any depth. There are lots of great photos (although the paper quality is not so good). The author obviously likes the F-15 since this is the third book I have purchased by him.

Great History and Technical Book.......2003-03-14

This book gives a detailed look at the history of the F-15, and contains one of the better technical descriptions I have seen in print, covering all the electronics systems, weapons, and the airplane itself. Also included is a list of the air-to-air kills made by the F-15 in Israeli, Saudi, and U.S. service. Photos are included of all 20 prototype aircraft, as well as photos of each operating air force. Highly recommended.

A wonderful book, this is an enthusiast's book, if you would like to learn more about this soon to be classic warplane, this is an excellent addition to your library. However, if you're looking for a book with performance, maneuverability, radar range, strengths and weaknesses, you'll have to find more books on the Eagle. This book does come with plentiful pictures (not many color pictures though) Technical schematics, and some history. You might enjoy this book if you're a complete enthusiast like me

Good Reference For Historical Politics Of Smoking.......2003-03-25

"Smoking and Politics," presents the mechanical bureaucratic and political moves that involve PACs, lobbyist firms, and constituents. There are ample amounts of administrative information that is important to explain what happened and why, but it can overwhelm some. However, it does reflect the complexities of the legislative process.

In recent years there have been many legislative and legalistic transformations since Fritschler began this book (first edition). This book is commonly read, studied, and dissected at some point in a public administration student's college stint. Compromising, steps forward and back, lobbying, and watershed legislation are presented here highlighting the individuals and organizations involved. (The who, what, how, why, and where.) It's what I call "Machiavellian bureaucratic implementation of policy." Those doing research into the historical politics of smoking, and/or the public policy process involving smoking in particular will get a lot of facts from this.

Good info, but disorganized.......1998-10-15

Federal policy with regard to tobacco has undergone substantial change over the past thirty years. Fritschler and Hoefler have regularly updated their book, to include these new changes. Unfortunately for them, the mid- to late-1990s has seen a whole new series of proposals, which means a two year old book is already somewhat out of date.

Also, with each new edition, they've tried to maintain the general organization of their earlier editions. This means the fifth edition tells a somewhat disjointed story. The book jumps repeated from the 1960s to the 1970s to the 1980s and 1990s, then back again. Often, this leaves the reader confused as to exactly *when* a particular change occurred.

The book's strongest point is that it clearly illustrates the importance of the bureaucracy in making [not just implementing] public policy. Many policy texts present the mistaken impression that Congress makes policy and the bureaucracy implements policy. Fritschler and Hoefler do policy students a great service by demonstrating the importance of the federal rulemaking process, and the ability of an activist bureaucracy to make or motivate substantial changes in federal policy.

All manner of birds are covered, including rare birds. The book is broken down into eight chapters and has a very nicely done glossary suitable for children/students.
