. . . if you tell them Benjamin Franklin said it first. While great quotations are fun for everyone, they are particularly useful to the author or professional speaker seeking confirmation of his or her premise.
This book is entertaining, uplifting and a valuable resource. The book categorizes the quotations by author and, unlike most books of quotations, it provides background information on the person such as the dates of birth and death as well as his or her occupation. The Index references the quotations by subject.
As a publisher, author of 26 Books, over 90 revised editions, six translations, 51 reports and over 500 magazine articles, I spend a lot of time looking for appropriate quotations. I need the best tools. This book is a great tool. DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com.
A Brief Comment.......2001-01-03
There's not a whole lot to be said for the Wit and Humor Quotationary -- except that it's the funniest, wittiest book of quotations I've ever seen.

Pretty as a Picture: The Art of David Lynch
ASIN: 0859652912 |
Book Description
In his wildly varied career, David Lynch has experienced cult adulation, mainstream success, virtual rejection by the film industry, and a renaissance in which he created a style that can only be called Weird Americana. Weirdsville U.S.A. charts Lynch’s work from his experimental art school years and the midnight movie hit Eraserhead, the mainstream success of The Elephant Man and the commercial failure of Dune, the birth of Weird Americana with Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks and the neo-noir mystery Lost Highway, to the present day and the film The Straight Story and TV series Mulholland Drive.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of Information, some of it correct........2000-09-28
Paul Woods takes a fan's approach to discussing the life and works of filmmaker David Lynch. The book is at it's strongest when describing the films and the effort it took to create them. The chapter on the 5-year ordeal that Lynch and his gang of misfits underwent in order to bring Eraserhead to the screen (which most of them felt it would never see) is as facinating as the dark, experimental film itself. Woods only falters when he tries to give us a biographical glimpse of Lynch himself. Most of what he tells us about Lynch are the speculations of others and the directors own evasive little quips and soundbites that he has used to deflect interviewers over the years. The books research sometimes seems quite painstaking but at other time Mr. Woods, a british writer, demonstrates an almost unforgivable lack of basic knowledge about America and the market for which Lynch's films are created. At times one wishes that Woods had invested in a map of the U.S. (he refers to Spokane as a suburb of Washington D.C., and at another point describes Washington State as being located in the American Midwest) and perhaps gave another viewing to a few of Lynch's films during his research (he mixes up the chronology of events in "Fire Walk With Me" quite embarrasingly) but, for the largest part, his insights into Lynch's craft are fully realized and well-supported. The more a person knows about Lynch the more this book is likely to infuriate them with it's sloppy attention to detail, but for the Lynch-novice looking for an introduction to obsessive avant-garde cinema, this book will certainly entertain and illuminate.

“Stangler expresses [the] virtues and properties of this grass-family member, then lays out in detail instructions for 30 projects. The book’s mood is at one with nature: a loose flowing text around color photographs, black-and-white illustrations, step-by-step how-tos, and boxed commentaries.”—Booklist. “Should be welcome in all garden and crafts collections.”—Library Journal.
Customer Reviews:
Good intro to what you can do with bamboo.......2006-03-12
I took this book out of the library purely out of curiousity. We're doing a lot of home improvements, and our once-indoor pot of bamboo got big enough that it had to be moved into the atrium. Since bamboo is a renewable resource... hey, how could we put it all to use?
The Craft & Art of Bamboo is subtitled "30 elegant projects to make for home and garden" but it provides a little more than I expected. If you haven't worked with bamboo before (and I certainly haven't), two of it chapters (harvesting, purchasing and preparing bamboo; and tools, materials, and techniques) probably make this worth the purchase price.
Most of the projects are small scale, geared for beginners who just want to complete something in a weekend -- a bamboo doormat, sushi trays, teppo screen -- though there are a few big projects, such as coffee tables and fences. If you're a purist, you'll be offended by the author's use of drywall screws rather than cordage, but he does talk quite a bit about lashing and show the traditional ties, complete with illustrations and a photo of the result.
If I were serious about "woodworking" with bamboo, this probably wouldn't be the only book I acquired. Because of the tools and materials section, it would, however, be one I'd enjoy having in my library.
Drywall screws and cuteness.......2003-07-09
This is a "craft" book, in the debased modern American meaning of "craft", i.e. useless, shoddy trinkets. All joinery is with drywall screws -- yes you read correctly -- because tying knots made the author's hands sore. Couple thousand years of artistic and technical development down the tubes, just like that. One "project" requires no drywall screws, because it consists of splitting canes to make stakes, which you can then write "carrots" or "phlox" with a marker, and jam the stake in the ground, so you don't forget what you planted. If you need a book to tell you this you're such a dork no book can help! Craft and art, my eye. There is advice like this: "Multi-paneled fences, as described in this book, are built on site. Single panel screens can be constructed off-site and then installed." What does this mean? That you can build one panel, but no more than one, off-site? Gee whiz, good thing they told me, I built all the panels in my shop but then I got the book and had to burn all but one and rebuild the rest "onsite", cuz the book said so, duh. Why is slop like this even written? To take up room so as to disguise what it lacks. Bamboo technology has gigantic dimensions -- technical, historical, and aesthetic -- which I dearly hoped to see, but this is a "craft" book, i.e. the premium is on easily constructed novelties, just like most of our material culture. Drywall screws, what an insult.
Excellent bamboo craft book!.......2003-01-08
I was given an entire truck load of bamboo and had no clue what to do with it. This book really gave me some great project ideas! Has projects for large and small bamboo... I definitely recommend this book!
I returned it.......2003-01-04
This may be the only book I ever returned. There are plenty of projects in the book, but I found only one, an occasional table, attractive enough to even consider building (well, there was a coffee table that was OK too). I really like Asian furniture and thought there might be some nice plans in this vein (it is a bamboo book!), but there aren't. I was a little disappointed.
The information on cutting, bending, and flattening bamboo is worthwhile, but I bet it was only 20 pages or so; the the rest of the book is dedicated the various projects, many of them garden/outdoors.
Overall a decent book if you've never worked with bamboo - it'll get you started - but try to leaf through it beforehand to check out the projects if you're looking for furniture plans.
The Craft & Art of Bamboo.......2001-11-06
Anyone who is interested in bamboo will want The Craft & Art of Bamboo by Carol Stangler readily at hand! She looked North and South, East and West for her resources and inspirations. And she knew who to include, some of the greats in the field of working with bamboo -- among them, David Flanagan (the Bamboo Fencer), Yucatan Bamboo, and Doug Lingen and Reed Hamilton of the Bamboosmiths. The reader may not need or be attracted to each project (with 30 in all, she offers a BIG range to choose from!), but there is a great deal of information to be gleaned from each one. The chapters on harvesting and tools alone are sufficiently full of information to make the very reasonable purchase price worthwhile. This would be a great gift, for yourself or for any woodworker-crafter.

Book Description
All managers want to hold their employees accountable for results, but few know how. Moving beyond the far-from-ideal annual performance review -- which only evaluates what has already occurred, and not what the manager wants to achieve -- Keeping Employees Accountable for Results contains checklists, how-tos, and other tools to manage performance on an ongoing basis. The book gives busy managers quick, step-by-step advice on: * Setting expectations * Monitoring progress * Giving feedback * Following through Light on theory and heavy on practical application, Keeping Employees Accountable for Results gives time-pressed managers the proven, practical information they need to help their people accomplish more.

Step-by-step primer for first-time managers.......2006-08-08
If you're about to become a manager for the first time and don't have a clue about how to get your direct reports to do what you want them to do, use this book as a step-by-step primer. It explains what to say, when to say it and how to follow up. It teaches you why meeting and connecting with employees individually is so important if you want to keep them accountable and get results. Author Brian Cole Miller's advice will help you develop your coaching skills. It will also save you a lot of headaches if you're struggling with problem employees. Miller shows you how to work with difficult employees in a way that is supportive, yet puts the ownership of results squarely on the employee's shoulders - where it belongs. If you've just promoted someone to manager, or if you are a new manager, we suggest that you make this book a part of your on-the-job training and development curriculum.
Easy to Use Handbook.......2006-03-03
Accountability is essential to individual and organizational success, but few leaders know how to make it happen. Consequently, accountability remains at too high a level-far away from the people who really should be accountable for their work. Managers spend far too much of their valuable time chasing after details, progress reports, and hope-it-got-done worries. If there were a way to calculate the value of managerial time wasted because of our accountability deficiency, the cost would be astronomical. If you could calculate the cost to you, personally, it would far exceed the price of this book.
Miller presents his advice in a design that's easy to grasp-complete with anagram. He offers a SIMPLE system: Set expectations, Invite commitment, Measure results, Provide feedback, Link to consequences, and Evaluate effectiveness. Each of these components is explained in its own chapter, following the same format. The principle is presented, followed by an explanation of why it is important, then the how-to. Examples and checklists (good ones at the end of each chapter) strengthen the book's value.
You will gain a considerable amount of worthwhile knowledge, technique, and advice reading this book from cover to cover. However, the strongest benefit will come over time as you use this volume as a reference book, a handbook to return to for refreshers and reinforcement.
Idea: copy relevant items from the end-of-chapter checklists and use them as daily reminders that you're doing what must be done to build and maintain accountability. This is a book you'll want to keep close to your desk as an important companion.
PS-the principles will work in non-business situations, as well.
Great resource for the busy manager........2006-02-03
This is fantastic. Miller (great name!!) uses the same style from his first book (also good-Quick Team-building Activities for Busy Manager) and applies it to something much more important: holding your employees accountable. The book is organized so well for the busy manager, that it's almost more like an outline than a traditional book...it's easy to breeze through it, gleaming the points you need, glossing over stuff you already know (and not fear that you're missing anything). BUT, you can also dive deep into detail whenever you want it, or learn from the many examples provided. The steps here are concrete and logical. The flow makes sense...you learn quickly that this is not rocket science...or is it just that Miller knows how to make things seem simple, so the average manager "gets" it and can do it?
Like he warns in the intro, there's not a whole lot of theory here-just the how-to steps with examples and checklists of how to apply them, and then just enough theory to support them without ever bogging you down. So if you accept that up front, you wont miss the theory (which weighs down most other books on this subject, anyway). You'll just appreciate the simple process (which is cool, since he was able to make his 6 step process fit an acronym SIMPLE). If you need some help on holding your employees accountable, and you just need the quick and dirty "just tell me how to do it!" version, this is the book for you! A quick read, to the point, well organized. Miller packs a lot of punch into very few pages. A great resource for the harried manager who wants some help, but quick.
Simple and effective.......2006-01-25
As managers, we work at top speed all the time and often we simply assume (and hope!) our employees are getting the job done. This book offers an easy to implement way to ENSURE employees are getting the job done. What a relief to have found this book. THANKS!

Book Description
She dazzled millions as Gigi. Eliza Doolittle. Holly Golightly. But to her most adoring fan, Audrey Hepburn was best known for her role as "Mummy."
In this heartfelt tribute to his mother, Sean Hepburn Ferrer offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the life of one of Hollywood's brightest stars. Audrey Hepburn, An Elegant Spirit is a stunning compilation of nearly 300 photographs, many straight from the family album and never before published; archival documents, personal correspondence, and mementos; even paintings and illustrations from the actress herself.
Sean tells Audrey Hepburn's remarkable story, from her childhood in war-torn Holland to the height of her fame to her autumn years far from the camera and the crush of the paparazzi. Sean introduces us to someone whose grace, charm, and beauty were matched only by her insecurity about her appearance and talent, and who used her hard-won recognition as a means to help children less fortunate than her own. With this unique biography, Sean celebrates his mother's history and humanity--and continues her charitable work by donating proceeds from this book to the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund.
Customer Reviews:
Sweet and Charming.......2007-07-25
This book was pleasant and thoughtful, as is its subject. Though admittedly the writing was far less enchanting than I would have expected; I like to think it was kept simple to further emphasize the simplicity and sincerity of Audrey herself. This book did not add any revelation for the reader about her life; but instead, allowed for a glance at Audrey Hepburn's everyday existence. I was constantly amazed at how strong and genuine her character when faced with life's sometimes complicated decisions. This book shows Audrey as a person who effortlessly put others before herself, and seemed to never question her sense of what is right.
Even the idea of such simplicity has become a fairytale in our lives, and it is so refreshing to read about someone who was capable of remaining so solidly pure, that I cannot help but read a little more. One need only look to her work with UNICEF to know how first-rate she truly was.
Audrey Hepburn as seen by her son Sean.......2007-06-13
She has allways been one of my favorite stars. The book has a beautifull
lay-out and is a pleasure to read.Lots of photographs never seen before
and beautifull passages about her work for Unicef and what a wonderful mother she was.I can highly recommend this book.
Biography.......2007-05-21
Bought this as a gift for my daughter as she is a fan and thought that the personal insights were revealing and poignant.
Audrey!.......2007-01-13
I love everything about this book. I like the photos. I like the interesting story. And how Mr. Sean Hepburn Ferrer includes a reproduction of Audrey's birth certificate. Obviously, this is a
well-documented book. Authentic and sincere. I wish Mr. Ferrer had chosen a more stunning photo for the cover. The cover is kind of blurry and not very focussed I love black and white photos Colored ones are nice too but not blurry, indistinct ones.
Audrey Hepburn, An Elegant Spirit: A Son Remembers.......2007-01-09
I loved this book. Audrey Hepburn was a true lady, graceful and simply elegant. Her son shows the true spirit of Audrey, a loving mother not only to her sons but to the children of the world.

Book Description
Still recruited from the Pathan tribes that live in the no-man's land between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Khyber Rifles continue to stand guard over this area, one of the world's most volatile borders. For more than a century these gallant poachers turned gamekeepers fought for the British Raj against their own kith and kin, but to date nothing has been written about their key role in Britain's struggle to dominate the North-West Frontier. Jules Stewart tells the incredible story of Colonel Sir Robert Warburton, the man who raised the Khyber Rifles in 1878, and describes the Khyber Rifles in action, in particular in the 1897 Frontier uprising and the Third Afghan War. In 1947, Pakistan gained its independence and the Khyber Rifles took on new duties, amongst them pursuing drug smugglers and terrorists. In the past two years they have been actively involved in the war against Al Qaeda and the opium trade. Most recently they set up the first permanent military presence in the forbidden tribal territory of Tirah, to seal the border against Al Qaeda militants and eradicate the opium trade.

Book Description
If legal scholar Richard Epstein is right, then the New Deal is wrong, if not unconstitutional. Epstein reaches this sweeping conclusion after making a detailed analysis of the eminent domain, or takings, clause of the Constitution, which states that private property shall not be taken for public use without just compensation. In contrast to the other guarantees in the Bill of Rights, the eminent domain clause has been interpreted narrowly. It has been invoked to force the government to compensate a citizen when his land is taken to build a post office, but not when its value is diminished by a comprehensive zoning ordinance.
Epstein argues that this narrow interpretation is inconsistent with the language of the takings clause and the political theory that animates it. He develops a coherent normative theory that permits us to distinguish between permissible takings for public use and impermissible ones. He then examines a wide range of government regulations and taxes under a single comprehensive theory. He asks four questions: What constitutes a taking of private property? When is that taking justified without compensation under the police power? When is a taking for public use? And when is a taking compensated, in cash or in kind?
Zoning, rent control, progressive and special taxes, workers' compensation, and bankruptcy are only a few of the programs analyzed within this framework. Epstein's theory casts doubt upon the established view today that the redistribution of wealth is a proper function of government. Throughout the book he uses recent developments in law and economics and the theory of collective choice to find in the eminent domain clause a theory of political obligation that he claims is superior to any of its modern rivals.

Brilliant.......2005-08-15
The takings clause of the Fifth Amendment of the United States Constitution, which had a brief surge of popularity recently due to the eminent domain case of Kelo v. New London, reads: "Nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."
Epstein, a law professor at the University of Chicago, begins his book by examining briefly the purpose of the clause and the power of eminent domain, invoking Lockean and Hobbesian theories of the state. After a cursory look at originalist theories of constitutional interpretation, dismissed as unworkable, Epstein has distilled the clause down to its theoretical underpinnings. This is the stepping point, the beginning of a masterful journey through American jurisprudence, which touches upon such varied fields as nuisance, tort, regulation, welfare, taxation, and police power.
His theory is simple in its particulars, essentially reduced to a few theories of representative government: 1. the state stands no better legally than the citizens it represents: its rights are merely the rights of its citizens in summation, and 2. the change in wealth from the primordial state of nature to the civilized body under government must not only increase, but the proportion between the shares of each individual must remain the same: that is to say, the distribution matters as rightly as the sum.
Simple as his premises are, the book is by no means humble in its application, and his conclusions are in no sense lacking for justification. Epstein's logic is buttressed at every turn by law review articles, often complex economic analyses, and veins of political science. His conclusions are not incontrovertible, but they are indeed mighty.
He brings this approach to what seems to be nearly every aspect of common and constitutional law (antitrust law being the one exception I noticed), all through the eye of the clause. Chapters stand on their own: one is barely aware of the arch of the grand overall argument until the final chapters, when the logic calmly leads us down lanes to ends we would dare not consider at the beginning of the book. But even then the approach is characteristically precise, honest, and stark.
The case is made for a society more libertarian, but it is not borne from the insipid koan of "non-aggression," but rather structured upon modern economic analytic techniques, the lessons of the common law, calculus both utilitarian and Kantian. Nevertheless, this is, to be sure, a legal book, despite the invasion of philosophy and social science. Supreme Court cases are introduced and appraised, Latin terms of art are utilized, the earthy grounding of common law precedent and principles will never be far away. It is only in the final and initial chapters that Epstein examines explicitly political philosophy, Nozickian, Rawlsian, and civil republican theories, and the implications his arguments bear when considered by their lights.
The legal center of the book will doubtlessly make it easier for lawyers to digest. The political implications will doubtlessly make it a better meal for libertarians than other political classes. Nevertheless, the layman will find much within to pique his interest (or enrage it), and any one with an appreciation of the excellent would do well to admire Epstein's arguments.
Something must be said for the author's style; it is certainly an academic one. Epstein does not use excess words, and will not waste ink restating a point already made. Superfluous sentences have not been included: every phrase exists as a necessary brick in the overall argument. The author throws no lifelines to his readers if they are confused, does not repeat what you were foolish enough to briskly skim over before, nor does he flash italics or CAPS when his points are particularly important. His manner is confident, never arrogant. If his argument has a weakness, he acknowledges the weakness and moves on without wasting more words. For example, perhaps my favorite passage:
But there is in fact good reason to recognize the practical strengths of the maxim [a common law principle of riparian rights], even if it does not capture an ultimate truth. That the rule bridges the gap between is and ought is hardly a demerit, for every rule of entitlement so functions. Better there be a connection between is and ought than no connection between ought and anything of interest in the external world. For dealing with the eminent domain clause, it is surely preferable to recognize a system of rights already in place than to invent one to replace it.
It is a dense and rewarding style. And it is a dense and rewarding read. Those looking for a comprehensive judicial philosophy may find it here entirely; those who already have one will find much to assimilate into the whole.
The final lines, which trickle by with characteristic understatement, and the final snap of the book's covers, left me in awe. I cannot recommend Takings highly enough.
Well-argued.......2001-07-16
This fine book by Prof. Richard Epstein has probably been more influential than the casual reader may be aware.
The heart of Epstein's claim is that _anything_ the government does that imposes any sort of "cost" on anybody amounts to a "taking" for which the Constitution requires just compensation. We all know how this is supposed to work as applied to the usual exercise of eminent domain. But Epstein casts his net wide and argues that the takings clause applies to all sorts of things you never would have thought of -- welfare programs, rent control, jiggery-pokery with the national currency, you name it.
The impact of the book is evident mainly through "negative" evidence. For example, some readers may recall that during the Clarence Thomas hearings, somebody asked Thomas if he believed the stuff in this book (as the Congresscritter in question clearly did not). I think Thomas managed to duck the question, but the point was made. And at any rate, it tells you something that somebody found it important to _ask_ the question in the first place.
Then, too, my own property-law casebook remarks somewhere near the end that Epstein's views on "takings" have not been found convincing by too many people. Interesting that the book still finds it necessary to mention his work, then.
So check it out. Sure, it's radical, and (let's admit it frankly) it's probably not a correct interpretation of the framers' intent. But if you're not a tax-and-spend Congresscritter, maybe you'll find it as pregnant and alluring a suggestion as I do. And it's one of Epstein's best books; I think he wrote it before he had completely converted to utilitarianism. You don't have to agree with it, but you should at least learn why Federalistas are afraid of it.
A classic........1998-08-03
The human right to own and use property is a bedrock of our basic values and freedoms. Epstein's classic book is a seminal (and accessible) analysis of the complex legal and philosophical issues involved. Its original publication in the mid-1980s was also an important political event; it helped trigger the current movement to reinvigerate the right to property, in the Congress and in the Courts. With the Del Monte Dunes case up in the Supreme Court, the argument is getting even hotter. Takings is essential for anyone who wants to understand the issues.
