Excellent source for medieval household accounts!.......2000-05-17
This book is a must-have for anyone who really wants to know about the yardages, prices, and types of textiles purchased in households in medieval Europe. Contained within it are actual lists of the purchases made by several demenses, notably the Count of Blois. Also included are photographs of extant pieces of weapons and armor from the period. As a costumer interested in reproducing medieval garments, I found it to be an invaluable source for determining how much material it really took to make certain things, and for whom in the households what types of fabrics were purchased. Wonderful book!

Nightwing Takes Bludhaven.......2007-04-29
Dick Grayson has always been one of my favorite characters. I was one of the people cheering when he stepped out from under the Bat's shadow. I was even happier when he moved into his own city.
'A Knight in Bludhaven' collects issues 1-8 and documents Graysons first steps into the 'haven a city that makes Gotham look safe. Grayson has no one to lean on, even the local law enforcement is crooked.
Grayson is drawn to the city after twenty-one dead bodies turn up on the shores of Gotham. He quickly learns what kind of city he's landed in. Right off the bus Grayson has to step in to break up an attempted rape. From there he gets himself a ratty apartment, a job, and begins to make his pressence known to the local low lifes. After awhile Grayson decides that it would be best for Nightwing to become a permanate fixture in the 'haven. He says the city not only deserves a guardian but it definatly needs one.
Batman and Robin (Tim Drake) make cameo apperances.
Warning: you WILL get hooked on Chuck Dixon.......2006-01-26
This trade collects the first 8 issues of Nightwing. In a word - Outstanding! This is definitely not just for NW fans, but Bat-family fans wil especially love it. Dixon's story is a perfect balance between action and mystery. For the most part, I love the art. But it is occassionally too busy. McDaniel's action scenes have so much going on, that it's sometimes difficult to keep track of exactly what's happening.
Batman sends NW to Bludhaven to solve a mystery involving 21 dead criminals. Before long he's in over his head finding a place to settle, his day job, crooked cops, and his caped crusades. Robin drops in at one point, and the two have a revealing conversation about what makes Bruce, Dick, and Tim all tick.
Good Introdution Story.......2005-09-03
This book touches on how Nightwing begins his vigalante service in the City of Bloodhaven. The book arrived in great condition and the story of well written.
How I became a Nightwing fan.......2005-07-13
I've always enjoyed reading Batman comics and graphic novels, so I figured, why not try a Nightwing graphic novel? Anymore the way the comic world operates you have to subscribe to Robin, Nightwing, and Batgirl just to know what is going on with Batman anyway.
Nightwing has a different personality from his mentor. Dixon does a good job establishing that he has a sense of humor. For example, a thug cuts Nightwing's ponytail: "I was getting sick of it anyway." Batman would just punch the guy harder than the other thugs. Nightwing is no longer under the shadow of his mentor.
"A Knight in Bludhaven" describes the transition for Dick Grayson as he becomes a crime fighter in a city that is even more corrupt than Gotham: Bludhaven. There are no Alfreds, Jim Gordons, or Barbara Gordons in this urban cesspool.
Nightwing becomes the protector of Bludhaven as Batman is the protector of Gotham. Nightwing has finally come of age to call his own shots. He is a different character with a different set of enemies. In fact, the secret Bludhaven crime boss is a resurrected baddie from Dick's past.
This is a great coming-of-age story that shows that Grayson is ready for the big-time. If this is what Nightwing is like, I'll probably get a few more of his storylines. Good stuff.
Not the Greatest Bat-family Book, but OK.......2005-07-05
This is an adequate kickoff for the Nightwing series. The artwork by Scott McDaniel and company has it's own unique style, stylized but clean. Chuck Dixon's clunky script weighs the book down quite a bit, but the artwork helps to hold things together. "A Knight in Bludhaven" is mildly entertaining at best.
"Birds of Prey" is a far better "Bat-family" series. The books written by Gail Simone are fantastic.
If you're looking for more Nightwing, check out "The Outsiders" (a fun, gritty series) by Judd Winick and "Nightwing & Huntress" (a great crime story) by Devin Grayson.
Happy reading!

Maybe lightweight but a good place to start..........2006-01-10
I found the book to be an excellent primer. Early begins by walking the reader through basic blackjack play and strategy. He has chapters on card counting, fallacies, and the reasoning and math behind the basic strategies. He includes several appendices with interesting facts and math tables to help the player. I suppose that their are books that delve deeper into blackjack arcania and card counting methods but my guess is that this book will be more than enough for anyone but the most serious player.
Most easy-to-understand book on the subject.......1999-03-22
This is one of the very few books which emphasizes the reasoning behind mathematical results; knowing WHY plays are made is the first step to memorizing those plays. The book is excellent for those who face six-to-eight deck shoes. Only one counting method is presented, but others are referenced in the bibliography. For the low price required, it has paid for itself over and over again in superior play. I highly recommend this for everyone interested in 21.
Lightweight..........1997-03-23
This is a good book for newcomers to the world of Blackjack but should NOT be considered a thorough review of the game. Mr. Early presents only one method of counting cards which may or may not be the most effective for the myriad of Blackjack rules and games available. I was expecting more. A much more useful tome is BEST BLACKJACK by Frank Scoblete. It thoroughly explains not only the gory details (if you want them) of Blackjack geeks but also the easiest methods to maximize your odds of winning if you are, like me, a casual player

You'll keep this close to your side for years to come..........2006-02-09
I purchased the fifth edition of this book back in 1997 and still have it. I work through it, from start to finish, every three months in order to keep myself fresh and thoroughly knowledgeable about income statements, balance sheets, and cash flows. The exercises are challenging enough to require you to do a little extra research and thinking on your own, i.e., not everything in the questions can be answered by consulting the book. IMPORTANT NOTE TO PROSPECTIVE PURCHASERS OF THIS BOOK: You will have difficulty thoroughly understanding this material unless you have at least a year of financial accounting coursework under your belt. Although I already had 8 accounting courses under my belt by the time I purchased this book, it helped me understand financials like I had never understood them before. A very useful text for those interested in the analysis of, particularly, the income statement and the balance sheet.
Most confusing, wordy textbook I have ever used.......2005-10-02
I am in a graduate program and this is the first time in 16 years of education that I have ever come across such a poorly written textbook! As a previous rater stated, "The presentation of the content assumes that the reader has some knowledge of this content area and at times leaves him/her confused as to what was discussed, making it difficult to understand. Examples that are used are often incomplete and do not provide a complete picture of how statements are generated." I second his sentiment, "Too bad I could not give it zero stars." I would love to contact these individuals and their publisher and recommend they never write again. I need a book I can use again and again when my class is finished, not one I would sooner burn.

Book Description
Robert SkidelskyÂ's three-volume biography of John Maynard Keynes has been acclaimed as the authoritative account of the great economist-statesmanÂ's life. Here, Skidelsky has revised and abridged his magnum opus into one definitive book, which examines in its entirety the intellectual and ideological journey that led an extraordinarily gifted young man to concern himself with the practical problems of an age overshadowed by war. Meticulously researched and beautifully written, John Maynard Keynes offers a sympathetic account of the life and influences of a passionate visionary and an invaluable insight into the economic philosophy that still remains at the center of political and economic thought.
Customer Reviews:
A fitting tribute to one of the greatest thinkers of all time.......2006-05-31
Anyone who has taken a course in macroeconomics knows who Keynes is. Economics is full of camps, conflicting doctrines, feuds, rivalries, etc. Keynes was unique in that, unlike other economists who are indoctrinated or are in love with a theory, he was never scared of giving up an idea that did not work. If one was to read his "Tract on Monetary Reform" one might be fooled into thinking that it was Milton Friedman that was writing and not the J.M Keynes who revolutionized economic thought with his General Theory. This pragmatism is what sets Keynes apart from every other economist. But why Keynes was so different from others is something students never learn. This biography does an admirable job of tracing Keynes' upbringing, his education, career, and contributions in the light of circumstances that Keynes lived through and shaped his ideas. It is also full of nuggets about Keynes' idiosyncracies which humanizes the biography and shows the real person behind the aura. The book is long, but 63 years of action-packed life requires such detail. The Chinese say, May we live in interesting times. Keynes certainly lived in interesting times with the result that this book is just as interesting.
An excellent,nontechnical biography of J M Keynes.......2005-11-27
This book is Skidelsky's one volume abridged version of his previous three volume biography(1983,1992,2000)on J M Keynes.Skidelsky successfully weaves all of the different aspects and strands(personal, familial, historical, social, political, economic) of Keynes's life into a beautifully constructed historical tapestry that will keep the reader's attention from the first page to the last. All of the different talents Keynes possessed and displayed during his lifetime come alive on the pages of this book.Skidelsky is the master of his material as long as he concentrates on the vast nontechnical aspects of the life of his subject.Skidelsky has clearly mastered the historical and chronological events and interrelationships that occurred during Keynes's life. Unfortunately,Skidelsky does not have the necessary formal training in mathematics, logic, statistics or probability in order to properly understand or assess any of those parts of Keynes's scholarship that involves the use of formal logical and mathematicalmethods or analysis. These technical deficiencies in Skidelsky's academic training are the main defect, not only in this book but in the entire corpus of Skidelsky's writings on Keynes going back over 30 years.I will concentrate on Skidelsky's error filled statements concerning Keynes's A Treatise on Probability(1921;TP) and the logical theory of probability. On p.95,Skidelsky conflates the principle of indifference(poi) with the principle of insufficient reason. They are not the same.Keynes's poi requires a balance or symmetry of the relevant, available evidence or factors involved before equiprobabilities are assigned. The poi can't be applied if there is no relevant evidence.Advocates of the principle of insufficient reason,on the other hand, argue that equiprobabilities can be applied in states where no relevant evidence exists.Keynes always rejected this kind of reasoning.Skidelsky bases his assessment of Keynes's logical theory of probability on the error filled work of A. Carabelli and R.O'Donnell.Carabelli and O'Donnell base their assessments of the TP on four sources:1)Keynes's introductory guide to the measurement of probability in chapter III of the TP;2)F. Ramsey's 1922 book review of the TP in The Cambridge Magazine;3)F.Ramsey's 1926 book review of the TP in his article,"Truth and Probability",published in 1931 in a book of articles;and 4)Keynes's 4 page eulogy and very brief review of the book in 1931.In chapter III,Keynes had already made it clear to the alert reader, who had a mind of his/her own (and would not ape the preposterous ,nonsensical claims made by F. Ramsey that by nonnumerical and nonmeasurable Keynes meant that numbers could not be used in general to estimate probabilities,i.e.,that Keynesian probabilities were like a surveyor assigning nonnumerical heights to a mountain hidden in the mist)that the vast majority of Keynesian probabilities used in common discourse were/are interval estimates.John Maynard Keynes is the originator and founder of the interval estimate approach to probability.Keynes spells it out in a number of places in the TP:"...we judge that the probability of the actual argument lies between these two(numbers;reviewers note).Since our standards, therefore, are referred to numerical measures in many cases where actual measurement is impossible, and since the probability lies BETWEEN(Keynes's emphasis)two numerical measures..."(1921,p.32).After warning the reader not to reach any conclusions based on chapter III alone until after Part II of the TP was reached(p.37),Keynes gives his definition of nonnumerical in chapter 15 of Part II on p.160 of the TP.On pp.161-163 and pp.186-194(ch.17),Keynes presents his approximation approach .It has nothing to do with ordinal rankings(see Skidelsky's queer claims on pp.284-285,for instance). An upper bound and a lower bound are specified for some 13 worked out probability problems. One of these problems(a revision of Boole's problem 10)is then made the foundation for Part III of the TP.Part III is then made the logical foundation for Part V. Carabelli's and O'Donnell's "reading" of Keynes's TP is very poor,at best.Skidelsky's conclusions, based on their very poor reading, are very poor.Skidelsky also appears to have been misled by Richard Kahn and Joan Robinson into believing that Keynes was a strictly literary economist, who was a poor mathematician by 1927. Supposedly,Keynes had never taken the twenty minutes that was necessary to understand the theory of value(microeconomics).Based on these bizarre beliefs,Skidelsky comes to the queer conclusion that Keynes deliberately refused to present any formal mathematical model of his general theory in the General Theory(1936;GT).Any mathematically trained reader can find Keynes's completely worked out model, with the results presented in the form of elasticities so that a reader of the GT can compare Keynes's results with those of A C Pigou,in chapters 19,20,and 21 of the GT.Keynes then compares and contrasts his model with Pigou's model, who had also presented his results in the form of elasticities, in the appendix to chapter 19 of the GT.A technically trained economist should purchase a copy of the GT instead of this book.

Book Description
From 1918 to 1972 over one hundred American aviators (pilots and crew) from all military services received the United States' highest military decoration for "distinguishing themselves by conspicuous gallantry and courage at risk of their own lives, above and beyond the call of duty." Through a combination of interviews with the surviving fliers and in-depth research, Barrett Tillman presents the incredibly valiant and inspiring stories behind the medals and in many cases sets the "official record" straight. These accounts, which redefine heroism, feature some of the most famous airmen in history-Frank Luke Jr., Jimmy Doolittle, Joe Foss, David McCampbell, Leo Thorsness, and Patrick Brady, to name a few-and lesser-known fliers who finally get the recognition they deserve. In World War I, Lieutenants Edwin Russell Bleckley and Harold Ernest Goettler flew in the first sustained aerial resupply operation in history. To accurately drop supplies to the 77th Infantry's "lost battalion," they flew so low that German troops perched on French cliffs were firing down on them. Second Lieutenant David Richard Kingsley, returning in a battered B-17F from a bombing run over Ploesti, Romania, in 1944, gave his parachute to a badly wounded man just before the plane went down. Over North Korea in 1951, helicopter pilot Lieutenant John Kelvin Koelsch, while rescuing a downed pilot, was shot down and captured. He refused to talk and provided only name, rank, and serial number, a procedure that would become the American code of conduct for future POWs. Major Patrick Henry Brady took such heavy fire during one day in Vietnam that he went through three Huey helicopters while evacuating fifty-two men from certain death. Half of the medal winners died earning it; most of the survivors consider themselves lucky just to be alive. Their selfless acts of true heroism deserve to be remembered.
Customer Reviews:
The Straight Skinny on Aviation MOHs!.......2006-04-28
Now here is a perfect match of author and subject! Over the past 30 years Barrett Tillman has penned some of the finest non-fiction books and magazine articles on military aviation to see print. His trademarks - in-depth research coupled with a wonderful narrative style - come to the fore in this volume, an unvarnished, incisive look at the Medals of Honor awarded to U.S. airmen for in-flight actions "above and beyond" during America's past wars.
ABOVE AND BEYOND is a marvelous blend of aviation history and detective story. Rather than accepting the official version of events that resulted in the awarding of a MOH, Tillman researched each action, uncovering information that provides a much more definitive account of the aviation Medal of Honors. In some cases Tillman's research amplified the official accounts; in other instances, it corrected the historical record. Though the exploits of many of the airmen in this book are well-known to the public (Rickenbacker, Luke, Foss, Bong, Boyington, etc.) the feeling you get after finishing Tillman's book is one of finally having a true account of the actions of some very brave men.
Tillman's book is also enjoyable for the background material he presents on the Medal of Honor winners, the aircraft they flew and the Medal itself - how it was created, criteria for awarding the Medal, myths and misinformation regarding some aviation MOHs not to mention the role politics and inter-service rivalries played in the awarding of a MOH.
Until something better comes along, I would have to say this book is the definitive story on the subject!
A&B updated.......2003-02-18
For readers who have heard of retroactive Medal of Honor awards since publication of this book in 2002, please know that I'm keeping abreast of the situation. Much has changed in a short time, including the passing of the irreplaceable Joe Foss in January 2003. If A&B enters a second printing it should include corrections and updates.
(I apologize for rating my own book--I'd avoid it if it were still possible for an author to comment on his title without doing so!)
A Fresh look at the Medal of Honor.......2002-09-28
Over 100 American airmen have received the Medal of Honor since World War I. Barrett Tillman's new book, written for the Smithsonian Institution, is a fresh look at these warriors and their exploits.
The book is arranged by war and service, with each recipient being individually covered. What's novel about this effort that author Tillman doesn't rely on just the official (and frequently stilted) citations, but interviewed numerous experts and witnesses of the events along with as many of the surviving medal recipients as he could locate. What you get is what Paul Harvey would call "The rest of the story", and it includes inter service rivalries and a fair dose of politics as well as courage, heroism and sacrifice.
Among the familiar names- Bong, Rickenbacker and Foss you'll find many whose valor have been lost to history. The author also covers aviation-related awards, such as men who received the medal while POWs as well as mentioning some who are commonly believed to have received the medal- Army's Colin Kelly, and some who probably should have- including Marine Marion Carl.
Tillman takes time to compare other nations' counterpart medals and deals with the changing criteria for the award through the years. He also includes things you may not have thought of, such as that the B-17 Flying Fortress has been the mount of more CMOH winners (17) than any other aircraft, while the Grumman F4F Wildcat leads all fighter types, with eight.
Highly recommended for those who enjoy reading military aviation titles.
