I recently read this book and I really enjoyed the take that it took on the small things in life which seem so trivial. Mrs. Kibbe takes such a humorous view on such aspects which adds to the books character.
Definately recommend this book. An excellent buy.

        Book Description

"Professor Foster clearly and insightfully articulates the ways in which well-known contemporary Latin American films create and negotiate meanings of gender identity and homoerotic desire within their sociopolitical contexts.... In sum, this is a very interesting queer reading of some of the most important contemporary Latin American films."

—Emilio Bejel, Professor of Spanish American Literature, University of Colorado-Boulder, and author of Gay Cuban Nation

Viewing contemporary Latin American films through the lens of queer studies reveals that many filmmakers are exploring issues of gender identity and sexual difference, as well as the homophobia that attempts to defeat any challenge to the heterosexual norms of patriarchal culture. In this study of queer issues in Latin American cinema, David William Foster offers highly perceptive queer readings of fourteen key films to demonstrate how these cultural products promote the principles of an antiheterosexist stance while they simultaneously disclose how homophobia enforces the norms of heterosexuality.

Foster examines each film in terms of the ideology of its narrative discourse, whether homoerotic desire or a critique of patriarchal heterosexism and its implications for Latin American social life and human rights. His analyses underscore the difficulties involved in constructing a coherent and convincing treatment of the complex issues involved in critiquing the patriarchy from perspectives associated with queer studies. The book will be essential reading for everyone working in queer studies and film studies.

The films discussed in this book are:

Williams Fosters analyzes Latino gay and lesbian movies. He has an expansive view of the genre; he covers U.S. Latinos/as and Latin Americans. Unfortunately, the average American viewer won't have access to all the films that he discusses. His chapters are boring and confusing. There was not a single chapter that I found enlightening, even though some of the movies discussed are excellent in their own right. I am surprised that such a guru of Latino gay and Latina lesbian issues could write such a poor book. Maybe this is an example of publish or perish. There are so many other books and book chapters about films and their representations of gay men and lesbians of color that are better. I highly do NOT recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended to any Magician. Professional or Amature.......1999-10-27

I've been studying magic for about 3 years and would say this is one of the best informational books I've found. I now know where the "Tarbell Course in Magic" (considered to be the Bible of Magic and also highly recommended) obtained alot of it's info. Also, for being written back in the mid 1800's, it's hard to believe how much of the patter is still useful today. I would have loved to have seen these "Greats of Magic" perform. So if you can't find an original, pick a copy of the reprint that just came out.

Look for Prof Hoffmann's other two books "Later & More Magic" too.

5 out of 5 stars This was my first book on the art of performance magic........1998-11-30

The material covered is sufficient to take one from wannabe amature to many effects which can be found in the acts of professional performers today (such as the classic cut and restored rope trick, the cups and balls....and others). Sadly, this book is out of print. For those who are able to find copies of it, however, I would like to say that I highly recommend it for the collection of amature and professional alike.

For over 30 years, the Royal Dutch/Shell Group has used these scenarios to identify business risks and opportunities in ways forecasts cannot. Now for the first time these scenerios are available to the public. This book portrays three plausible futures with contrasting economic, political, and regulatory features and distinct implications for the energy system.

3 out of 5 stars Too much "design" not enough ideas.......2007-09-14

Shell was one of the earliest innovators in the area of scenario planning, and they have done extremely well by this method. Quite a few excellent authors have come out of Shell, such as Kees van der Heijden's books Scenarios: The Art of Strategic Conversation and The Sixth Sense: Accelerating Organizational Learning with Scenarios.

This book is disappointing for a number of reasons. This is meant to be a popular book, with lots of nice visual effects. Sadly, the content could and the unwieldy shape and heft reduced to a thin paperback, and it should have been. The binding itself is atrocious, and simply does not work. Sigh.

That said, there is a good amount of conceptual material here to chew on for the upcoming years, though it will likely not remain viable all the way until 2025. There are three main configurations plotted in the book: low trust globalization, "open doors", and "flags". In LTG, security and market efficiencies are the overriding factors driving the shape of things to come, and social cohesion or the "force of community" is weaker than the other two forces. In open doors, social cohesion and market incentives combine for a more fruitful outcome (both economically and socially). In flags, community and security overcome market incentives and a more distrustful and nationalistic scenario emerges, the darkest of the three broad global scenarios.

These broad possible areas are then reflected through a wide range of issues from demography and migrations, to African futures, to climate change and biodiversity, and to legal and regulatory environments, among others.

                                  Good content, flawed format.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading about the forces shaping the world.......2006-11-30

The Shell Global Scenarios is an outstanding example of the craft of scenario design as well as a creative and insightful look at the forces shaping the world. The text is well written. The graphics are memorable and thought provoking. The commentaries by leading thinkers from various fields add depth. Scenario design can take many forms and be adapted for many purposes. The Shell approach is arguably the best for understanding and speculating about issues that cut across multiple socio-economic, technical, and political dimensions. Modern scenario design began with Herman Kahn and Anthony Wiener's "The Year 2000: A Framework for Speculation"(MacMillan, 1967). While we can be entertained by the misdirection of many of their speculative conclusions, their framework set the stage for much of the scenario work that has followed. My only regret about the excellent Shell effort is that Pierre Wack is given credit for coining the term "scenario." While Wack is a giant in this field, the credit for introducing "scenario" in the modern use of the term should go to Kahn and Wiener.

Writer Rinker Buck looks back more than 30 years to a summer when he and his brother, at ages 15 and 17 respectively, became the youngest duo to fly across America, from New Jersey to California. Having grown up in an aviation family, the two boys bought an old Piper Cub, restored it themselves, and set out on the grand journey. Buck is a great storyteller, and once you get airborne with the boys you find yourself absorbed in a story of adventure and family drama. And Flight of Passage is also an affecting look back to the summer of 1966, when the times seemed much less cynical and adventures much more enjoyable.

                                            Book Description

Every writer keeps a secret, an episode from their past, hidden inside until maturity and their advancing powers conspire to bring it out; and that is certainly what happened with journalist Rinker Buck's Flight of Passage. Part adventure tale, part literary memoir, Flight of Passage is the
story of how two brothers resolved their differences and proved themselves to their father through a mythical odyssey across America.

In 1966, Rinker and Kernahan Buck, 15 and 17, bought a dilapidated Piper Cub for $300, rebuilt it in their barn, and then took off for California, making
headlines across the country as "the youngest aviators ever to fly America coast-to-coast."  Buck movingly recreates the pre-Vietnam America of cheap strip motels and dusty landing strips, the perilous crossing of the Rockies and the Arizona deserts in a fragile plane without a radio, narrating a classic tale of the Sixties.  But Flight of Passage is also a timeless ode to fathers and sons, evoking the rites of coming of age in a family driven both by demons and big dreams.  This BDD Audiobook is read by the author--a man whom critics are already calling "a virtuoso storyteller in a very American vein."

                                            5 out of 5 stars Captivating.......2007-08-26

There are so few good aviation stories on the shelves. Most have a military focus or are technical in nature. Either are fine. However this story is beautifully written and at times, a laugh riot. Imagine two teens restoring a Piper Cub from the frame then flying it across the country. Rinker Buck recounts his experiences as a son and brother so well. I felt as if I was with them.

I'm a student pilot and the book resonated with me and would for most pilots, I hope. However, I loaned it to a non-pilot and she was equally charmed by the story. Flying became the back story to a growing bond between brothers, conflict between a father and his sons and avacodos falling to the ground like little green bombs.

5 out of 5 stars For flyers and non-flyer alike.......2007-05-13

One of the best all around books I'v read in a long time. It's a personal family story as well as a flying story. As a pilot I loved it. My wife, a non pilot enjoyed it also.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a prize for the whole family. .......2007-03-14

First, everyone in our family, teens and adults loved this book. Then I began lending it out to friends, who lent it to friends, on and on, because they loved it so much! It's a miracle I got it back.
It's a true story of family, adventure, and what "following a dream" actually looks like. The subplot about the "water bag" captures beautifully that funny tension between knowing your parent really doesn't fully get what your life is about and the knowing that even so they love you.

5 out of 5 stars Pilot in Houston.......2006-12-10

Having grown up not far from the Buck's and learning to fly at an early age with the help of a family member, I found this book to be not only well-written, but also very personally meaningful. Buck does a wonderful job of bringing the reader into the experience and describing the detail though his own eyes as a teenager. If you are are a pilot (and even if you are not) it may well inspire you to get your hands on a Piper Cub and traverse the country.

                                            5 out of 5 stars A delightful read.......2006-09-25

This was a book that I bought in a bargain section and it turned out to be quite the bargain. It is a heart-warming tale with adventure and humor for everyone. The language at times was a little much and for this reason I would not recommend to young children. I don't think the author was necessarily attempting to make this book a comedy but he had me in stitches several times. I don't usually re-read books but this is one that I am looking forward to reading again and again in years to come.

                                                Book Description

In the same week that Union forces triumphed at Gettysburg, they also captured the river fortress at Vicksburg, Mississippi. Although much less memorialized than Gettysburg, the fall of Vicksburg was every bit as crucial to the Union cause.

Pitting Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman against John Pemberton and Joseph Johnston, the victorious Vicksburg Campaign helped revive a war-weary North, gave it absolute control of the Mississippi River, severed the western Confederacy from the East, and further constricted the South's ability to wage war as the Union drove ever deeper into its heartland. It also gave Grant--the campaign's chief architect--a dramatic venue for demonstrating his maturing skills and intelligence as a strategist and field commander.

Unlike other volumes in the U.S. Army War College Guides to Civil War Battles series, this one examines an entire campaign, looking at many interlinked battles and joint Army-Navy operations as they played out over seven months and thousands of square miles of rivers, streams, swamps, lakes, forests, hills, and plains surrounding Vicksburg. In addition to detailed coverage of the actual Siege of Vicksburg, the book also chronicles the battles at Jackson, Port Gibson, Raymond, Champions Hill, and Big Black Ridge.

Eyewitness accounts by battle participants make these guides an invaluable resource for travelers and nontravelers who want a greater understanding of five of the most devastating yet influential years in our nation's history. Explicit directions to points of interest and maps--illustrating the action and showing the detail of troop position, roads, rivers, elevations, and tree lines as they were 130 years ago--help bring the battles to life. In the field, these guides can be used to recreate each battle's setting and proportions, giving the reader a sense of the tension and fear each soldier must have felt as he faced his enemy.

This book is part of the U.S. Army War College Guides to Civil War Battles series.

"This book is helpful because in order to craft a final resolution to the conflict, one must understand what events transpired in the first place. De Waal's book significantly contributes to this purpose and establishes itself as one of the standard works for understanding this conflict."
—Parameters"Some of the most illuminating - and alarming - reading in de Waal's book includes the battle of historians and writers on both sides. "De Waal is cautious, meticulous and even-handed, and the breadth of his research is remarkable. He shows real affection for the ordinary people on both sides, and restraint in dealing with the self-serving politicians and field commanders in both Armenia and Azerbaijan who used Karabakh for their own political and pesonal ends."
                                                —Time (Europe)

Black Garden is the definitive study of how Armenia and Azerbaijan, two southern Soviet republics, got sucked into a conflict that helped bring them to independence, bringing to an end the Soviet Union, and plaguing a region of great strategic importance. It cuts between a careful reconstruction of the history of Nagorny Karabakh conflict since 1988 and on-the-spot reporting on its convoluted aftermath.

Part contemporary history, part travel book, part political analysis, the book is based on six months traveling through the south Caucasus, more than 120 original interviews in the region, Moscow, and Washington, and unique primary sources, such as Politburo archives.

The historical chapters trace how the conflict lay unresolved in the Soviet era; how Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders exacerbated it; how the Politiburo failed to cope with the crisis; how the war began and ended; how the international community failed to sort out the conflict.

What emerges is a complex and subtle portrait of a beautiful and fascinating region, blighted by historical prejudice and conflict.

3 out of 5 stars Good book to inform but stumbles from an intricate balancing act.......2006-04-16

Thomas De Waal's book "Black Garden" is one of the first publications that has been a written by an unbiased source on the Armenian-Azeri, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict that began in the latter of half of the 20th century, just as the Soviet Union gave way to form 15 independent republics. In the ensuing introduction of perestroika and glasnost by Mikhail Gorbachev from 1985 onwards, Armenians decided to take advantage and push and take back Karabakh, peacefully at first and violently when war crept forward from the horizon. De Waal does an interesting job in interviewing both Armenian and Azeri officials and those who (mis)lead their respective countries. The Azerbaijani government's numerous coups severly hindered their efforts to focus on the region, rather than the country as a whole. De Waal also dwells into the beginnings and history of the region and consequently debunks myths that were propagated by both sides.

However, it is in this where his book is mired with frustration and displaced onto the reader, a key factor of De Waal's undoing. He unfortunately concentrates too much of his time giving both sides 50-50 air time to explore controverserial issues. For example, when speaking about the 1915 Armenian Genocide and sympathizing for the victims and attending the march in Yerevan, De Waal brings up the recent Azeris' new claims that a genocide had been perpetrated against them by Armenians; giving equality for both without elaborating enough that the Azeris' claims are largely unfounded. He also makes unconvincingly generaliztions: he states that during the Karabakh protests outside Yerevan in February 1988, some Armenians didn't even know where the region was and had simply decided to skip work that day. He also has reluctance to condemn either side of wrongdoing. Near the end of his book, he states that Armenians felt the issue began in Sumgait, Azerbaijan (the site of a brutal pogrom of Armenians by Azeris) while the Azeris said it began in Khojaly in 1992 (the site of an alleged mass murder of Azeris by Armenian armed forces) and finally, leaves the reader hanging on on the edge of a cliff, not dwelling or at the very least expressing his opinion on it; a habit that is otherwise prevalent in his book. Some of the sources he uses are also rather unreliable, whether they come from interviews by former Armenian, Russian, or Azeri leaders or from writers who had slant towards either side (Andrei Sakharov, Thomas Goltz). His book also substantially covers many pages of Karabakh's history. From the reign of the Armenian Meliks (princes) in the 12-13th centuries who governed Karabakh to the protests in Yerevan and Baku (Armenia and Azerbaijan's capitals, respectfully) in 1988 to the peace talks in Key West, Florida in the summer of 2001.

Another shortcoming is in De Waal's subtle yet central theme, in that of his constant promulgation that Armenians and Azeris are largely alike and had a good relationship with each other until the conflict began in 1988. I lived in Armenia and have spoken to many Armenians and for the most part, Armenians did not have any extraordinary friendships with them. Perhaps this is true in Baku, Karabakh, or Sumgait but I felt that De Waal inflated this claim in an appreciated effort to mollify both sides in seeking a peaceful solution to the conflict. De Waal makes little effort to emphasize of how a brutally dishonest and racist campaign is undertaken by the Azeri government to this day to smear and criticze Armenians; going so far as equate them to the Nazis and even discredit the history of their existance. His analogies are also lopsided; he rightly castigates the work of the Azeri "historian" Ziya Buniatov for blatant academic dishonesty but then compares his actions to the Glasnost-era Armenian writer Zori Balayan who correctly asserted that Azeris had Turkic heritage. Later on in the book, while he again criticizes the harsh rule Armenians lived under the Azeris, he quickly goes on and (inaccurately) condemns Armenians for enacting the same brutal deeds during the 20th century against the Azeris. Perhaps the most contemptible and unconvincing example that he uses is in the end chapter of the book. De Waal praises the famous 18th century Armenian poet Sayat Nova who supposedly overcame the divide and made peace between not only the Armenians and Azeris, but also the Caucasian Georgians. De Waal admonishes both sides for not taking Nova's example but leaves out the brutal circumstances of his death. In 1795, the invading Iranians, led by the Azeri Prince Agha Mohammed Khan, demanded that Sayat Nova convert to Islam. Nova was a Christian and refused to do so and hence, was promptly executed and beheaded.

Nevertheless, it is a welcoming gesture to bridge the divide between two peoples as. In either case, De Waal should be commended for writing the book and my own misgivings shouldn't preclude someone from reading it.
