Book Description
This book is the first publication on one of the largest and most important private contemporary art collections in the world today, the Rubell Family Collection. Collectors since 1967, the Rubell family (now based in Miami, Florida) today owns some 6,000 works of art, from paintings to sculptures, photography, videos, and installations, by the most significant artists working from the 1970s to the present. The collection reads like a "Who's Who" of contemporary art, and includes works by Andy Warhol, Carl Andre, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Damien Hirst, Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman, Thomas Struth, Mike Kelley, and Louise Bourgeois, among many, many others. This book is picture-driven, and showcases some 300 reproductions of the most important works in the collection. It is organized neither chronologically nor alphabetically, but is rather intended to convey the experience of visiting the collection, through the successive installations of the collection since it was opened to the public in Miami in 1996. Neither a catalogue nor an art history manual, this book is an astonishing collection of images of contemporary art at its best. It also includes an introduction by collection curator Mark Coetzee, an enlightening interview with the Rubells on the collection and the process of collecting, and a full list of plates.

Premier Private Collection .......2005-10-08
This book gave me a very comprehensive view of contemporary art, offering insight into the collecting process via interviews with Don and Mera Rubell, as well as hundreds of high quality color reproductions. It lets the collection speak for itself, as the bulk of this book is filled with installation shots and details of works by some of the most important artists of our time. The introduction by Director Mark Coetzee provides the reader with a history of the collection which helps to contextualize it. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in what is perhaps the most relevant contemporary art collection in the world!
not afraid of publishing bad reproductions.......2004-06-23
The Text by Coetzee is more disingenuous than forthcoming. He spends too much time painfully retelling the story of each artist. Without ever divulging what art is located in the Rubell collection. The editors should have cleaned up the superfluous writing. The Publisher historically places top notch reproductions in their art books but must have wanted to cut production costs and decided to go with a cheaper image quality. Think of it as an art book without art.

Riveting reading for piss connoisseurs and amateurs.......2006-10-05
If you're one of those people who thinks that the world is your toilet, or if you're just some average joe who likes to go al fresco, you'd be amazed at what you don't know about peeing in New York. This little book tells you all you need to know about peeing outdoors WITHOUT getting busted and, more important than that, how to pee in New York without splashing all over your shoes, your purse, your what-not, and so on. In fact, splash reduction is a major focus in this homespun tour de force, and it gives fascinating, detailed instructions that any curbside pisser can understand and appreciate. The weird drawings alone will give you hours of mictur-iffic enjoyment. It's a great gift for someone you love or anyone else who loves to pee in New York--bar mitzvah boys, barflies, AA graduates, NYU students, anthropologists, you name it. This book belongs on every toilet tank in the greater metropolitan area.

A must for any manager..........2007-08-09
This is a great book. I've learned alot as a first time manager. I've also loaned it out to a friend who was working on a "culture in the workplace" project. She loved it too. Whether you are new to management or have been in the seat for a while, you should read it.
Hope you enjoy it!
Bec oming a Successful Manager.......2007-04-03
The book was helpful and gave me some good ideas for managing and also for what managers expect from me.
Very Touchy-Feely, Love Thy Neighbor.......2004-11-18
I am a new manager in a very large company. I purchased this book and another to help me learn how to deal with people, especially the ones with whom I used to work that now work for me. The book reads like a self-help book for a 10 year old with review questions at the end of each chapter. Also, it is very touchy-feely. The author wants you to treat your subordinates like your very best friends. I found some good pointers from the book, though not very many.
Great Book for New Managers!.......2002-04-20
What a great book for new managers! So many people suddenly placed in a management position feel shot out of a cannon. They are completely unprepared for the new responsibilities that face them, the new dynamics they'll encounter in the workplace, and the stresses that can so easily result. Grossman and Parkinson give wonderful, useful advice that is wise and practical at the same time. I recommend this book highly!

Practical, Informative and Insightful.......2002-03-08
This is a must-have book for all new managers, those who hope to be managers one day, and even managers who have been managing for years. The information provided in this short and easy-read book is even applicable to relationships outside of work - your spouse, children and friends.
The authors take you through a series of topics that make you appreciate why 'great' managers are great. These topics can be viewed as good ole common sense, but unfortunately one realizes how often we don't demonstrate common sense. The book is full of questions - situations that all managers encounter, along with several effective ways of handling each situation so that every wins - your company, your employess and you, the manager - good practical techniques that everyone can put to use.
This is not the kind of book to rest on your libary shelf. Read it and pass it on.
Book Description
Among the monumental characters who ascended to impossible renown and influence in the history of American politics, few are more fascinating than Boss Tweed; and few working historians could record in more vivid detail his astonishing career than Kenneth D. Ackerman—an investigative historian of the first order.
Ackerman's vibrant, accessible, and altogether captivating Boss Tweed is a biography of the legendary figure who "bribed the state legislature, fixed elections, skimmed money from city contractors, and diverted public funds on a massive scale." During his reign at Tammany Hall and then in a variety of elected posts, including as U.S. senator, Tweed wielded almost total control over New York State and City politics, before his unparalleled zealotry and remorseless disregard for the law led to his imprisonment. Yet, as the author shows, Tweed’s positive political contributions have been largely overlooked. From one of the most talented new historians to have emerged in recent years, this book presents a thrilling story of the master manipulator who tried to make all of New York the instrument of his own ruthless ambitions, and succeeded—for a time. More than sixty photos and political cartoons by Thomas Nast are featured throughout.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Character.......2007-07-11
William Tweed needed a book written about him. It is interesting to see how the city used to be run and how much more difficult it is to be corrupt today compared to then. Tweed changed america with his ways and I liked the fact the author points out in many ways he was the fall guy for many others.
Intriguing book, not as good as book on Garfield.........2007-01-12
I started reading Kenneth Ackerman's take on the notorious Boss Tweed after reading his superb book on James Garfield. Ackerman still shows a knack for bringing us back in time and we begin to understand the major personalities. Boss Tweed was a complex man, and at times I felt cheering for him to beat his eniemies who really seem worse than him. Nobody in this book has pure motives. The NY Times wanted fame and hated the Irish. Nast also hated the Irish and saw bringing down Tweed as a moral crusade, facts be damned. Tilden is seen as a two-faced wimpy man who did want reform but wanted to destroy Tweed more. Tweed himself was a thief but he did give back to the city he stole from, and he was the only major player in "The Ring" to have had major jail time. His associates in crime got off scot-free mainly due to a stubborn wish to damn Tweed.
A Lot To Like.......2006-12-18
I was impressed and entertained by this biography of William Marcy Tweed, the man who ran New York from the Civil War to the early 1870s. I was fascinated from the very beginning by the retelling of Tweeds role in quelling the New York draft riots. And he did it in such a quintessentially New York way: money! But what emerges is a remarkably three dimensional portrait of the man and his cronies in all their splendor. One of my favorite characters in this biography was Mayor Oakey Hall, the poet-politician who didn't mind a little kick-back or two.
The City came alive through the telling of this important, though little understood period of New York History. The "Gangs of New York" fantasyland version of the facts has done much damage to an accurate understanding of this period of our history. But Ackerman brings great writing and depth to the story of the Tweed ring and its speedy collapse. Interestingly, Tweed himself was the only member of the ring to go to jail. And while it is hard to argue that he didn't deserve it, it seemed a manifest unfairness to let the others off without any repercussions. Tweed, on the other had, spent the rest of his life in jail (except fr when he escaped to Cuba and Spain!)
The other part of the tweed story that was so intriguing was his everlasting popularity. He was the champion of New York's poorest and their loyalty to him was eternal. He was larger than life and projected a charisma that probably delayed his day of reckoning for years. This is a great telling of a great story of a fallen man. It is interesting to compare him to others who have this route, such as Nixon, Delay, Cunningham, and the like, and see how much of a difference there seems to be.
Tweed - The Boss of it All !.......2006-07-10
This is a great look at Boss Tweed, Tammany, Graft and everything else that was going on in the 1800's. I was happily surprised to see who Tweed really was. Comparing the book to the movie "Gangs of New York", Tweed did not give off the impression of being a very important man; Bill the Butcher stole that role. But after reading this book, you get a true inside account of who was really "pulling the strings" in NYC. Tweed was the cream of the crop in his world, and he had his hands in everything (a thief way before his time). Whether illegal or not - you have to admire his accomplishments. In a way, he was like the bad guy in a movie that you didn't want to see fall at the end, but he did. This book was very satisfying and I am now looking into some of Ackerman's other books as well.
good stuff on "Peace Democrats" vs. Lincoln.......2006-03-27
Mr. Ackerman presents interesting descriptions of the "Peace Democrats" -- the so-called Copperheads -- many of whom lived in the New York area, and were enemies of Boss Tweed: Samuel Tilden (who received a majority of the popular vote in 1876, but lost the presidential election to the Republican Hayes), Horatio Seymour (the NY governor who declared the Emancipation Proclamation unconstitutional), Fernando Wood (the NY mayor who proposed in 1861 that the city secede from the Union!), and George McClellan (the retired general who ran against Lincoln as the war raged on, winning only three of the participating 25 states -- the president edging him in New York state by a single percentage point).
The Copperheads couldn't abide the military draft, the war, or the president who was attempting to defeat tyranny. Sound familiar in 2006?
The author, though, has an irritating compulsion to put the black hat -- not on Boss Tweed -- but on cartoonist Thomas Nast, who played a major role in toppling Tammany Hall. Mr. Ackerman gives other hints throughout the book of belonging to the school of "moral equivalence."
Nast (born in Germany and who died in Ecuador as one of our consuls there) won great praise from Presidents Lincoln, Grant, and Teddy Roosevelt.

Fort Ticonderoga, Saratoga, Fort William Henry, Crown Point, Plattsburgh, Bennington, and Valcour Island all lie along the ancient warpath that is the Champlain Corridor. In 1864, a band of Confederate raiders attacked St. Albans, Vermont, in the northernmost battle of the Civil War.

Book Description
A Practical Guide to Localization was written for translators, localization engineers, testing engineers, desktop publishers, project managers, and anyone else who may be involved in the release of multilingual products. In this second edition, translators can learn more on localizing software, online help, and documentation files, and on the latest translation technology tools. Localization engineers will learn all about developing, engineering and testing software and online help projects. For project managers, there is all the information needed in planning translation or localization projects, finding resources, and ensuring the quality of deliverables. New to this second, fully updated and revised edition are chapters on internationalization, desktop publishing, and software quality assurance.
The book has been designed as both a reference work and a teaching tool.
Bert Esselink has been active in localization for over a decade. After graduating in technical translation and taking university classes in programming and computational linguistics, he worked for several years as software localizer, localization engineer, and technical project manager at International Software Products. In 1996 he joined ALPNET in Amsterdam as localization manager, before taking on the role of globalization manager, developing internal production quality standards. In January 2000 Bert joined Lionbridge to head up their globalization consulting services.
Customer Reviews:
The definitive work on internationalization.......2007-01-31
I read the first edition of Bert Esselink's excellent book when I was still a novice to the localization market in 2004. Later, while working for a localization company I bought a copy of this new edition for the company. Now I have my own to read at my leisure. The author has expanded into internationalization and globalization, and covers not just software but web sites and documentation in general. This is an excellent tool for anyone involved in international marketing, easy to read and to find information. The definitive reference work.
Excellent book for translators and localization editors.......2005-09-05
I bought this book as on overall introduction on localization, for I'm about to do an internship for a localization agency.
It really covers anything you should know if you are new to localization, both for Windows OS and Mac OS, and goes deep into detail for people who are already inside the business.
A must have.
Mandatory Primer for any Localization Newcomer.......2001-12-17
This book is invaluable to any newcomer in the localization industry, whether you aspire to become a wiz engineer preparing RC-files for translation left and right, or a project manager with the need to understand every step of a project's planning process and actual execution. Industry standard methods, techniques and tools are discussed. Tips and warnings are conveyed. Hard to beat this book as a general yet comprehensive introduction. Any drawbacks? All I can think of is the fact that there is no separate chapter devoted to web site globalization - well, Bert, maybe you could add another 100 pages to the next edition to address this issue? I'll be the first in line...
Not as complete as the description implied.......2001-02-21
If you are a translator localizing software under Windows, this book is for you! Buy it first before other books you might get later. However, Esselink views the computing world as if only Windows is worth discussing. A few pages are devoted to the Mac crowd and the only other OS mentioned at all was SunOS, and only in passing. Given Windows' large market share in the desktop market, it deserves substantial coverage. However, it is only one competitor among many in the server and embedded systems markets. With the growth in the markets for wireless access (web enabled cellphones) and PDAs, ignoring other OSs is a serious oversight.
Esselink discusses the tools that will be used in the Windows environment and how to use them effectively. He deserves a great deal of praise for his thoroughness in that respect. I want to reiterate, if you are a translator localizing software under Windows, buy this book!
Programmers will find that the main value Esselink provides is a discussion of deliverables. He stresses some points that are independent of the tools used, such as glossaries and hints to guide the translators. For a programmer, this isn't the first book you should buy on internationalization and localization, but if you are the expert on it in your organization or you are a project manager responsible for scheduling it, buy this book! It won't show you how to write internationalized code. It will tell you what needs internationalization, what to deliver to your translators and when to deliver it.
This is a good book. For the audiences it addresses, it deserves 5 stars. Other audiences simply need to be aware that it may not be the book for them.
Excellent Practical Guide.......2001-01-03
This is an excellent and practical guide. I found all the chapters very useful. The guide is an excellent resource for translation project managers, localization specialists or anyone else that wants to learn more about the localization process. Easy to read and with information that is current and USEFUL (unlike other authors which go into long and theoretical dissertations about Localization). A much better and updated guide than "Software Internationalization and Localization" by Emmanuel Uren.

A Practical Overview.......1999-11-28
This book gives a broad overview of some very practical issues encountered in software localization. It generally covers the "whats" and "whos" in the introdcution, and moves on to the "how tos" in following chapters. There are a few solid localization examples of software, online help, HTML, and documentation; general information for Windows, HTML, and Macintosh systems. The discussion on translation tools includes most industry products available like Trados, IBM Translation Manager, Deja Vu, Amptran, STAR Transit, TSS Joust, SL8 TransPro, and Eurolang Optimizer, however, no mention of Uniscape. It discusses basic Engineering and Project Management issues with a nice layout of localization processes including Quotes, Analysis, Scheduling, Budgeting, Glossary & Terminology Setup, Testing, DTP, Documentation, QA and Delivery. In addition, the Appendices with Terminology and Localization Resources, provide some valuable background research. It briefly mentions Unicode and issues with other standards, though there is room for improvement with more useful information in that area. All in all, its clearly written and well organized... though a bit outdated, I say its time for a good revision.
a must have for anybody in the Localization field.......1999-04-09
As an experienced professional in the Localization industry and as the creator of award-winning Silicon Valley Localization Forum. I strongly recommend this book. It contains an excellent overview of the most popular localization tools available on the market these days.
