Jewish Cermonial Art.......2004-08-06
Objects of the Spirit: Ritual and the Art of Tobi Kahn by Emily D. Bilski, Meditations by Nessa Rapoport, Essays by Leora Auslander, Terrence E. Dempsey, S.J., Tom L. Freudenhelm, Jonathan Rosen, and Ruth Weisberg (Hudson Hills Press) 133 illustrations, 113 in full color Exceptional sense of spare and stark design makes the objects pictured in this book an example of stunning design.
Objects of the Spirit presents a unique collection of Jewish ceremonial objects created by the internationally renowned artist Tobi Kahn. In addition to crafting singular, functional pieces in bronze and wood, Kahn has created large-scale public works, communal spaces that are sites for spiritual contemplation-all beautifully illustrated in this publication.
Both Kahn's public spaces and his private devotional objects embody
the rise of spirituality in America and the desire for ritual in everyday life. The essays offer a wide range of insightful interpretations that address the universal, ecumenical need for ritual and spirituality, as well as the art historical and cultural references in Kahn's work.
This landmark title is published in conjunction with a traveling exhibition of Tobi Kahn's art, organized by the Avoda Institute, New York.

Product Description
They are otherworldly creatures that appeal to our best, and at times, our worst natures. They watch over us, and can just as easily lead us into or out of temptation! They are angels. Certainly more powerful than mere mortals, but not as pure and chaste as legends would have us believe! In this latest Gallery Girl series, an international array of artists take up the challenge and create a choir of angels so desirable, you'll be tempted to kick out a stained glass window or two yourself! Inspired artworks by Arantza, Maraschi, Byrd, Capristo, DelRivero, Colucci, and many more. Cover painting by Pelaez.

Angels of your dreams...and nightmares!.......2005-08-29
The Gallery Girls collections from SQP are some of my most favorite collections of fantasy art since they present such an eclectic variety of talents. Previous Gallery Girls collections have put the spotlight on Vampires (Crimson Embrace series), Witches (Coven series), Pirates (Treasured Chests) and Jungle Women (Jungle Tails) to name just a few. Angel Lust is a new Gallery Girls collection and as the title suggests, it features illustrations of seductive, erotic angels by some of the finest talents in fantasy art. Like the other books in the Gallery Girls series, this is a soft cover, magazine-sized book with black & white, primarily pencil illustrations. The roll call for Angel Lust includes: Mitch Byrd, Diego Greco, Pedro Cuevas, Danilo Guida, Brian Le Blanc, German Ponce, and several more.
The different take each artist has on the subject matter is what makes the Gallery Girls books so interesting. Some present Angels as playful and shy, others as great warriors, battling hordes of evil. Still others take a more ominous approach depicting their angels as tragic victims, falling to dark powers akin to many old Renaissance-era paintings. There is no end to the diversity. Danilo Guida presents one of the aforementioned darker pieces showing an angel being accosted by a legion of demons, as her clothes are torn to shreds. Brian LeBlanc illustrates a rather humorous piece of a beautiful warrior angel directing two male Cherubic angels into battle.
A Titanic, God-like angel is the center of attention in a piece by German Ponce as an angel that dwarfs the Earth, stands holding handfuls of agonized men in her hands, perhaps on the way to their final, eternal damnation. Diego Greco provides a much lighter illustration showing a pair of "storm angels", lying on a cloud, one holding a watering can and the other a handful of lighting bolts, preparing to send a potent storm down upon the planet. The angel is a Diego Candia drawing finds herself captured by Satan himself. In yet another fantastic piece, Danilo Guida depicts a Templar, or some other Holy Knight bowing before a celestial, warrior angel, not unlike a Valkyrie from Norse mythology. My favorite illustration in the book is one by Luis Buci that shows a horrified blonde, nude angel being restrained by dozens of demonic tentacles, laden with spikes and tiny mouths with razor-sharp fangs.
The book also sports a painted cover by Paleaz. A great new Gallery Girls Collection from SQP!

By his own reckoning, Richard Schickel sits in an interesting place in movie history, between the geezers who still recall falling under D.W. Griffith's spell and the current crop of cinephiles who dig the wrong parts of the past--Douglas Sirk's Written on the Wind, say, rather than his delirious All That Heaven Allows. It's a clever distinction, and its brothers and sisters are everywhere in Matinee Idylls. The author of a small library of books about movies and moviemakers, a producer of television documentaries, and Time's longtime cinema guy, Schickel's authority on movie history is evident in these pieces gathered from 1984 to the present. Whether taking on stars (Bette Davis, Charles Laughton, Laurence Olivier), directors (Frank Capra, Sam Fuller, Satyajit Ray), or trends (the halcyon '50s and '60s when Americans watched foreign films), Schickel shows us what is fractured, forgotten, misunderstood, or just not gotten by audiences about his subjects. Frank Capra, he reminds us, regularly saw, and put into his pictures, the sweetness and the menace of ordinary folk. Greta Garbo's dwindling stock is regrettable but understandable: her star vehicles were dead things that mostly reflected her ego. Sam Fuller? He was a "movie bozo" who could still charge his screen with "the shock of the transgressive." Writing in a cool rather than a hot style, Schickel's draw is cumulative. At last, he seems the best kind of critic, armed with a fan's love, infinite knowledge, and a calm, unwavering eye. --Lyall Bush

Hits And Misses.......2000-07-01
I generally like Richard Schickel a lot. I find his film reviews to be mostly on target and in those times I disagree with him, I at least come away with a slightly perspective. I wish I could say the same for this collection of essays. Written over the course of many years and collected for this volume, they reflect the best and the worst of Richard Schickel, sometime within the same essay.
The best chapters are either the ones that move away from critical theory and discuss specific actors or directors from a specific perspective or the ones that discuss films from the point of view of the general movie-going population. In particular, I thought his analysis of the American Film Institute's 100 Years 100 Movies (for which he was both a voter and a producer of the television special) to be exemplary. He was able to put into words what was probably on the minds of everyone who has debated that subject and address certain questions that were probably not raised before. He also pays nice tributes to certain icons of the Hollywood community with genuine affection that is nice to see, particularly coming from a critic. Schickel doesn't really look down his nose at anyone, regardless of his personal taste in their work.
The essays tend to bog down when they become more like a memoir. Not to say that some of his experiences don't make entertaining anecdotes, but I think that people read Richard Schickel for insights into the movies and for his valued opinion, not for insights into himself. It's unfortunate that I felt that certain essays were not worth reading beyond the first few pages.
However, most of the essays do contribute something as far as provoking thought, and I suppose that is better than most books of this nature. Having to pick and choose what selections you read doesn't mean it's not worth reading, but it makes you wish that the entire book was more like the good stuff.

Interesting bidding thoughts, good play problems.......2006-04-12
When I first saw this book I expected it to be the routine book of play problems with Loser on Loser plays, not ruffing in 2nd spot, etc. Instead I was pleasantly surprised as the problems were common, but not the routine ones covered in many other books. There are bidding, defense, and play problems, all requiring the reader to listen to the bidding.
I don't agree with all of the authors bidding ideas, but they are interesting. And some of his points are excellent, like when he expalins why a convention should not be used in a certain situation. Also, concerning Long Suit/Short Suit game tries, its better if the weak hand describes itself, not the strong hand.
The play problems are mostly Intermediate Plus. Most are MP oriented, but that doesn't take away from their use for IMPS players. The problems are common ones, not unusual squeezes.
They involve counting, listening to the bidding, visualizing the unseen hands, thinking about a suit based on spots played, not breaking new suits, or setting up a suit.
Over, this book will not be of much interest to Advanced players (most who think they are advanced are just Intermediate plus) becajus ethey will find the play problems easy, and already know the bidding.
Those below Intermediate level will not be able to visialize teh hands and think about the spots, and will miss most of the problems, and probably not even know how to solve them.
Example:
You dont want to lead any other suit but Clubs, based on the bidding, so you select Clubs.
you lead K from KQ32
Dummy has 10 x x
pard plays the 5.
Declarer plays the 6.
Whats going on?
At first you may think its a Bath Coup and not to continue.
But with the 10 in Dummy, its likely Declarer doesn't have the AJ else he would take the K and lead to the 10, establishing a 2nd trick by force.
Leading low can be ok.

Book Description
Back in the 40s, 50s, and 60s, it was fairly easy to plan for a secure future. People picked a career, a spouse, and a place to live, and those basic decisions put them on a predictable course for the rest of their lives. Especially if they were lucky enough to land at a big corporation with great benefits and smart enough to buy stocks.
In the 70s, 80s, and 90s, technology and global competition transformed the world. An increasingly strong economy masked spiraling instability in the workplace and the world. A rising stock market lulled people into thinking they were in control of their lives.
But now we've entered a totally new era, which Roger McNamee calls the New Normal. It's a time of great uncertaintyabout terrorism, corporate scandals, the outsourcing of jobs overseas, and much more. The old safety nets aren't coming back, even when the economy recovers. But the good news is that the New Normal also offers tremendous opportunities. This bookby one of Silicon Valley's most insightful and successful investorsexplains how to make the most of your life, career, and money by embracing the future.
The New Normal is the era of the individual. In companies large and small, each person now matters more than ever before. The Internet has finally made it easy to launch and grow a real business. For entrepreneurs and managers, the global economy opens previously untapped sources of supply and demand, cost savings and innovation. Individual investors now have access to tools and knowledge that were, until recently, restricted to professionals.
Roger McNamee has written a sweeping book in the tradition of Megatrends that clarifies this new era and gives readers a practical blueprint for success.

Just OK.......2005-05-10
Good insights, but you can get the same info from following Wired or Google News. The book just seems forced to me, as if the author had something to say in about a chapter or two and then just extended it several more chapters. Why spend $$...check it out from the library.
1st half is Druckeresque.......2005-02-12
According to the author, globalization and technology will substantially change our world. This is nothing new, but the author provides a forecast of what tomorrow's business climate will look like. The individual will have more power than ever as employees and consumers. Independent contractors and will be far more in demand as well as service organizations designed fill a niche for larger ones. Anyone who has strong specialized skills will have far more leverage in the company. China and India will be a powerful, if not dominant, force in the global economy. The stock market will be influenced more by individual investors. Most business will require longer operations, requiring workers to work longer hours and be on alert for 24/7. Technology will enable smaller business to effectively compete against larger business better than any other time in history. Scale matters less than ever. Overall, we are moving towards a very favorable long term trend towards the global economy where especially the talented will be richly awarded, but those who lack specialized skills might be left out of the all the wealth generated by the increase in globalization and technology.
The author is a very deep business thinker, almost as insightful as Peter Drucker, which is really saying something. The author is gifted in forecasting the future trends based on the present data. The 2nd half of this book wasn't nearly as good. Maybe the author was writing fillers (as many authors are forced to do to meet page quotas mandated by the publishers).
More than Investment Advice.......2005-01-20
If you're looking for a "how-to" book to help you find your way in the new economy, there are countless insights in "The New Normal" that will help you understand the major issues facing investors today. If you are looking for an honest account of how an individual in his twenties with good instincts and a willingness to do research, created his own place in the world, this book is for you. What was valuable to me in reading "The New Normal" were McNamee's strategies for thinking outside the box, and his suggestions about how to develop a sound approach to entrepreneurship. The book also gives the clear message that technology IS the future. No matter what field you are in, there are ideas and points of reference here that will enhance your career and heighten your success. In this book, you will find no-nonsense, sound advice based on experience, intelligence and a genuine desire to help others achieve their goals.
A lot of fluff, some substance.......2004-12-30
Bought this on a whim. Like many business books, it offers a tantalizing insight into a successful person's life. But like many business books, it is long on broad, overarching concepts but short on actual reccomendations. I too can be a pundit and sagacious by saying, " To make money, all one has to do is pick the correct stock and buy it." - but without reccomendations on what that one might be, it is less useful advice.
I think this is a useful book for someone who is in their mid 20's and is beginning to make their way in the world. The advice it offers about a constant state of change in the future is valid, but it doesn't offer much concrete information on exactly what to do with that information. An enjoyable read, but not a must-read or a first line book.
Long on insight, short on hype.......2004-11-26
A "rock star venture capitalist" in the literal sense, I was curious to hear McNamee's views beyond the two-minute clips aired on CNBC. Unlike many of the business books penned by one-hit wonders from the last few years, McNamee has posted super-size returns on early stage and public investments for two decades. While the title suggests a total paradigm shift in today's market economy, the chapters are refreshingly rooted in basic business fundamentals. McNamee doesn't attribute his success to a genius mind or visionary powers -- he writes about working smarter (utilizing technology, exploiting your own competitive advantages, cultivating your network). The New Normal echoes multiple authors: Horatio Alger (get out and do something); Howard Schultz (love what you do); Peter Lynch (invest in things you understand...learn from your mistakes); Warren Buffett (buy and hold...stay the course). McNamee layers in enough self-deprecating stories to remind you he's not Superman (despite succeeding in life, work, music, etc.). His investment theories offer good counsel to portfolio managers and college students alike (e.g. innovation comes in three phases: infrastructure, enabling technology, content & applications. Know what phase we're in to avoid investing in good ideas before their time.). He seems like the kind of guy you'd want to invest your money (he stays in Best Westerns on the road!), serve as your mentor or professor, negotiate multilateral trade agreements, play guitar at your wedding or babysit your kid. Good read.

In 1940, harems still abounded in Fez, Morocco. They weren't the opulent, bejeweled harems of Scherezade, but the domestic sprawl of extended families encamped around a walled courtyard that marked the edges of women's lives. Though born into this tightly sheltered world, Fatimi Mernissi is constantly urged by her rebellious mother to spring beyond it. Worried that Mernissi is too shy and quiet, her mother tells her, "You must learn to scream and protest, just the way you learned to walk and talk." In Dreams of Trespass, an enjoyable weave of memory and fantasy, it is clear that Mernissi's fertile imagination let her slip back and forth through the gates that trapped her restive mother. She spins amiable, often improbable tales of the rigidly proper city harem in Fez and the contrasting freedoms of the country harem where her grandmother Yakima lives. There, one of Yakima's cowives rides like the wind, another swims like a fish, and Yakima relishes twitting the humorless first wife by naming a fat, waddling duck after her.

Silent dreams of flight.......2007-04-04
"Dreams of Trespass" is Fatima Mernissi's memoir of her childhood growing up in a domestic harem in Fez, Morocco. She lived with her father and uncles and their many wives and children. This book focuses mainly on the role of the women in the family and Mernissi writes vividly of their daily lives and their dreams of "trespassing" through the gates of the family complex into the outside world. Despite their powerless position in the larger world of men, the women claim their own power within the family through storytelling and instilling in their own daughters a sense of independence and a thirst for travel and adventure.
In the West, when we think of the word "harem," images of exotic palaces where men keep hundreds of wives and concubines come to mind. Rarely do we picture Mernissi's "domestic harems" where generations in an extended family live out their rather ordinary daily lives. "Dreams of Trespass" is a refreshing correction to that Western image of women kept as slaves to be used solely for the pleasure of men. This is not to say that Mernissi paints an idyllic picture of harem life. She is quite clear about the womens' position and the hardships in their lives. But Mernissi shows that the women in her family never allowed that to make them slaves. Physically, they may have been property, but through their "Dreams of Trespass," they found other ways to free themselves.
A Bore!.......2007-02-19
I couldn't help but fall asleep whilst reading this book. I only was able to go through about a little over a half, mostly because I was required to read it. Generally, the book is about a middle eastern girl living in a Harem and surrounded by the conflicting Western Power, the French Army. Lots of battles with tradition and western cultures, and primarily about the rift between men and women. So you're in for a subtle yet quite obvious gender conflict, which was in my opinion awfully sexist (I know it's from the view of a woman but that doesn't take away from the fact that she explicitly tries to write as if she were a child again with "innocence" yet fails because of her mature agenda). The author, Mernissi, spends about 10-15 pages per chapter driveling on about the most useless facts or coincidences. Just when you think she's reaching her point and finally bear fruit, it's the start of a new chapter and another take on a topic or segment of her life that is completely irrelevant.
Middle Eastern Dance Class.......2006-11-11
The book was great and interesting. Amazon sent it very quick.
Innocent Courage.......2006-10-23
I found this book to be entertaining, educational, inspirational and thought provoking all at once. I personally and Americans in general are largely confused and misinformed about the concept of the harem and how the women in them lived; and it is no wonder or surprise that we are! It seems that even within the high walls and locked gates of the harem the residents cannot agree on the subject! What is a harem? Is it a den of iniquity? A commune? A brothel? A prison? An extended family? A refuge?
Told from the perspective of a 6-9 year old girl growing up in a domestic harem in Morocco in the late 1940s, this book has a freshness and naiveté that only a child can muster as she ponders her place in her home, society, and the world at large.
Her observations of the world around her are uncensored, and guide the reader to a greater understanding not only of other cultures and other women, but of our relationships and ourselves. Only a child has the innocent courage to stand up and say, "The Emperor has no clothes!"
As I learned about another world, I began also to draw parallels to may own life and current times. Changing laws does not grant freedom to individuals. Here in America we have all the freedoms that these women were deprived of and fought for, and yet in many cases we remain trapped- prisoners of our fears, our habits, our insecurities, and our weaknesses.
In this book I found lots of hope and inspiration, reminding me of many ways to experience freedom inwardly- without the necessity of changing outward circumstances.

Glimpse into a hidden world.......2006-02-01
This collection of stories is more than simply a memoir of a childhood lived within a secluded harem. It is also a story of a process of change that took place decades ago as the country of Morocco was becoming an independent nation state.
I was fascinated by the stories of the women who spent their lives hidden from the outside world within the family enclaves of the middle class in Morocco. I've purchased it for friends and colleagues who were interested in women's stories, both from a feminist perspective and from a humane one.
The stories are told with sensitivity and compassion, as well as a deep respect for, and understanding of Islam.
Book Description
At the now-peaceful spot of Tennessee's Fort Pillow State Historic Area, a horrific incident in the nation's bloodiest war occurred on April 12, 1864. Just as a high bluff in the park offers visitors a panoramic view of the Mississippi River, John Cimprich's absorbing book affords readers a new vantage on the American Civil War as viewed through the lens of the Confederate massacre of unionist and black Federal soldiers at Fort Pillow.
Cimprich covers the entire history of Fort Pillow, including its construction by Confederates, its capture and occupation by Federals, the massacre, and ongoing debates surrounding that affair. He sets the scene for the carnage by describing the social conflicts in Federally occupied areas between secessionists and unionists as well as between blacks and whites. In a careful reconstruction of the assault itself, Cimprich balances vivid firsthand reports with a judicious narrative and analysis of events. He shows how Major General Nathan B. Forrest attacked the garrison with a force outnumbering the Federals roughly 1500 to 600 and a breakdown of Confederate discipline resulted. The 65 percent death toll for black Unionists was approximately twice that for white Unionists, and Cimprich concludes that racism was at the heart of the Fort Pillow massacre. Fort Pillow, a Civil War Massacre, and Public Memory serves as a case study for several major themes of the Civil War: the great impact of military experience on campaigns, the hardships of military life, and the trend toward a more ruthless conduct of the war. The first book to treat the fort's history in full, it provides a valuable perspective on the massacre and, through it, on the war and the world in which it occurred.

What is it like to live in a tiny polar haven for two months? To paint penguins outdoors in freezing weather? To be flipper-slapped by a bird whose wings are powerful enough to propel it swiftly through frigid waters? To look into the oddly expressive eyes of a penguin chick? With charming watercolors and intriguing journal entries, this book inspires our curiosity. Sophie Webb gives readers a vivid, frank, firsthand account of what it is like to spend a season in a land not yet affected by people, yet populated for centuries by true dwellers of the Antarctic the fearless, round-bellied, pink-footed, gliding, diving, utterly adept Adlie penguins.

An excellent book for children and adults alike.......2005-03-20
Sophie has written a brilliant book for children and adults to learn about the amazing Adelie Penguins of Antarctica. Her illustrations and story are very well done and it will start a long love affair with the southern continent for you and your child, encouraging you to learn more about the Antarctic.
Sophie's well illustrated penguin expedition.......2000-11-29
Sophie Webb has applied her wonderful drawings to a travel log of her trip to the Cape Royds penguin colony on Ross Island, Antactica. Her drawings of the penguins in all their various activities are wonderfully accurate and delightful. She also recounts her experiences traveling to Antactica in a way that makes it very real -- I should know, I was there with her! The book is very well suited to kids as well as adults. However, note that she is quite truthful about some of the various fates that can await less fortunate penguins! Sophie has done a great job with this book.

Book Description
-- Nature
The Adélie penguin is one of the best-studied birds in the world and is the subject of research programs from a dozen nations interested in monitoring changes in the environment and the food webs of the Southern Ocean. This species' population has been changing dramatically over the past few decades coincident with a general warming of the maritime portion of Antarctica. When the sea-ice is seen to decline so does the population of Adélie penguins. Further south, however, the population is increasing.
This book summarizes our present ecological knowledge of this polar seabird. In so doing, David Ainley describes the ecological factors important to its life history and details the mechanisms by which it is responding to climate change. The author also chronicles the history of research on Adélie penguins, beginning with the heroic expeditions at the beginning of the twentieth century.
Weaving together history, ecology, natural history, and written accounts from the earliest Antarctic naturalists into a fascinating account of this charismatic bird, The Adélie Penguin provides a foundation upon which future ornithological research and environmental monitoring can be based. It is a model for investigations into the effect of climate change on a particular species. The book also contains many fine illustrations from the accomplished illustrator Lucia deLeiris and photographs by the author.

Book Description
Areas of barren rock and scree around the edge of Antarctica provide a breeding ground for two of the continent's most well-known species of bird: the south polar skua and the Adelie penguin. This book considers the relationship between these two species, taking as its study site Ross Island. The author challenges the traditional view, through detailed observations of the foraging ecology of the skua, that they are totally dependant on penguin eggs and chicks for food. In addition, studies of the impact of skuas on penguin breeding and the extent to which the skua breeding cycle is functionally related to that of the penguin provide further evidence to suggest that the two species occur together independently as a consequence of limited breeding space, rather than as a result of a distinct predator-prey relationship.
