Simpsons Comics Wingding contains Simpson Comics issues #19 to #23 and features crazy antics from Bart and family. The fun includes "Don't Cry for Me, Jebediah," in which Bart creates city-wide fervor by rigging the statue of the city's founder so that it appears to cry real tears; "The Artist Formerly Known as Bart," which has national pop-star singing sensation Biff Westwood trading places with Bart (because, of course, they look alike); and the Bart-and-Milhouse-take-on-France story, "Bart de Triomphe." The most clever story is a small five-page parody called "Rev. Lovejoy's Hellfire Comics, " a right-wing propaganda piece to which Bart has added his sarcastic comments and doodles in crayon.

      Book Description

America can't get enough of the Simpsons! The TV show keeps exploding in popularity and is rated the #1 FOX show for kids age 12 to 17 and #4 for kids age 18 to 34. Meanwhile, the comic books continue to take the industry by storm, with orders shipping a minimum of 100,000 copies per issue.

In Simpsons Comics Wingding, Groening fans can once again catch up with the latest goings-on in Springfield. First, Bart's bad, but this time he has double the trouble and double the fun, when our spike-haired hero swaps places with his look-alike. Now he's the Artist Formerly Known as Bart, and rock 'n' roll will never be the same. In the next adventure, Willie the Scottish groundskeeper and Bravehearted Bart are training in the woods. Their mission: To "give that silk-wearin' Nancy boy Skinner a drubbin' he'll not soon forget!" Ach! Then superstore mania hits Springfield when Apu and Mr. Burns join forces to build the world's biggest convenience mart! Last, but certainly not least, Bart zooms off on a trip to Paris, but his French vacation gets fried when the Mona Lisa gets stolen and all he gets is the frame!

When the television show just isn't enough, fans turn to the comic books to satiate their Simpsons addiction. A veritable bonanza of the wicked wit that made the series an international hit, this nonstop laughfest is the perfect cure for those summertime blues.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Simpsons Comics!.......2002-11-30

I have a dozen Simpsons comic books and Wingding is my favorite! Every comic is a hit and it starts off with the best Simpsons comic ever: "Don't Cry for Me Jebediah." Bart has to do a school essay on the town founder. For once, Bart is motivated due to the prize for the top paper: a year's supply of Squishees (Mrs. Krabapal made out with Apu to get this prize). Unable to find a new, exciting angle, Bart decides to create his own by hooking up an apparatus to make the Jebediah Springfield statue in the middle of town appear to cry. The media circus kicks into high gear! Town square becomes a haven for opportunistic vendors including Moe's "tear beer", Ned Flanders' "shroud of Jebediah" hankies, and Homer's "tear in a cube." Bart can almost taste those free Squishees!

"The Artist Formerly Known as Bart": The teen heartthrob of the month is touring his way through Springfield. His name is Biff Westwood and he looks remarkably like Bart (why Lisa would have the hots for a kid who looks like her brother's twin is cause for further examination, but back to the summary...). Biff wants to spend a day as a normal kid while Bart is always attracted to the wild side of life. What if...

"Stand and Deliverance": Bart is busted for using Principal Skinner's credit card to start a "School Shopping Network." His punishment is a "back to basics" camping trip led by Groundskeeper Willie. Curiously, the only other camper is do-gooder Martin Prince (maybe that's the real punishment). In one funny scene, Otto swerves his bus to avoid a raccoon ("I wouldn't wanna upset the balance of nature") only to start a forest fire in the process killing the raccoon from smoke inhalation. On vacation, Sideshow Mel is found snorkeling and is abruptly sucked up by the park's airplane and dumped onto the fire (I've heard of this actually happening before).

"Little Big Mart": Apu and Mr. Burns go into cahoots to start a Mega Kwik-E-Super Store. Mr. Burns was impressed with Apu's business skills which include watering down the Squishee machine.

"Bart De Triomphe": Bart finagles himself the grand prize in a Krusty Kroissants Kontest-A trip to Paris where he meets up with the two con-men from the TV episode "Crapes of Wrath" (breaking out of jail after being convicted of tainting wine with anti-freeze) and Sideshow Bob.

"Citizen Shame": A comic from Reverend Lovejoy's Hellfire Comics ("God's favorite comic book"). The Rev. explains how a good boy can go bad. The funniest part is that Bart writes sarcastic comments throughout the comic!

5 out of 5 stars Are you ready to laugh yourself to death!.......2000-01-22

I just LOVE THIS! This is certainly as good as it looks! This is funny, just as funny as the TV-Show. You have to read this! This is the best Simpsons Comics Collection Ever!

5 out of 5 stars This book Is a great buy.......1999-08-24

I recently found this book on the internet. I did not even know that this book existed. I thought about buying it. For what seemed like decades, I thought about buying it. Then I decided not to buy it. Based on what I saw of the cover, I thought this book was by far the best book I have ever read. I think the author had his neck screwed on correctly while writing this book. I was thoughly impressed with the subject. The only thing that left anything to be desired was of course the amount of junk on the website. Still. . .

            Book Description

In a hundred years of filmmaking dozens of potentially great films of master directors and artists were either never completed or not released. Many of these films are lost forever, but their little-known histories illustrate what fiction writers have known all along: People's failures often make stories more compelling than their successes. The reasons these might-have-beens never came to fruition are almost as varied as the plots themselves: Love spurned (L'Ecole des Femmes, 1941, Max Olphuls), unmanageable stars (I Loved a Soldier, 1936, Henry Hathaway), government suppression (Bezhin Meadow, 1935, Sergei Eisenstein) and fear of reprisal (Metall, 1931-33, Hans Richter) are but a few. A detailed discussion of each attempt is accompanied by cast and production credits (when available) and excerpts from scripts and other sources. Rare stills are interspersed throughout.

                Book Description

In this wide-ranging and challenging book, Ruth Smith shows that the words of Handel's oratorios reflect the events and ideas of their time and have far greater meaning than has hitherto been realized. She sheds new light on the oratorio librettists and explores literature, music, aesthetics, politics and religion to reveal Handel's texts as conduits for eighteenth-century thought and sensibility. This book enriches our understanding of Handel, his times, and the relationships between music and its intellectual contexts.

                      • Suzuki, Pepsi, DaimlerChrysler, and Nike extend their branding power to new mobile content, applications and games aimed at the 18- to 35-year old hipsters these advertisers covet most

                      • Prada, Wal-Mart, Stop & Shop and Extra use mobile innovation to enhance the actual in-store shopping experience to astonishing effect

BRANDING UNBOUND also explores the top 10 secrets of successful mobile advertising, and the impact of social networking technologies on mBranding strategy

2 out of 5 stars not a book for veterans.......2006-05-26

This book combined an exciting title with quite disappointing content to me. This is definitely not a book for those looking for solid analysis of the future of markeing and advertising, but just a laundry list of all exciting eye-catching gimmicks using wireless technologies. It looks like a cursory pachworks of materials from newspaper columns rather than a condensed book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Marketing Books of the Year.......2005-11-06

What does the usage of PDAs, cell phones, and the wireless Internet have in common? Not only are they becoming the preferred method of communication among young people but advertisers are desperately trying to find a way to reach them with their products and services without annoying them like spammers. In Rick Mathieson's new book "Branding Unbound," the author explains the technology revolution and what it means to marketers looking to capitalize on reaching this audience.

In "Branding Unbound," the author gives readers a glimpse into the future (and the present) state of wireless technology. The technology ranges from sound waves that will beam down to potential customer's ears, to grocery stores that use electronic shopping carts to enhance the shopping experience, to third-party services that will store your personal information to make your online shopping experience more convenient.

Mathieson explains that the entertainment industry is already taking advantage of the trend. Entertainers like Madonna and Justin Timberlake have already hired advertising agencies that specialize in wireless marketing and taken advantage of its audience. Now the more traditional advertisers like Cadillac and Absolut Vodka are finding ways to make their brands stand out to the young, buying audience.

"Branding Unbound" is a must read for advertisers looking to steal a glimpse into what could be the future of advertising. Though the author admits that m-marketing does have its share of problems like privacy issues, technology glitches, and a relatively small audience thus far, it would still make a lot of sense for marketers to run out, get this book, and get ready for the coming revolution. Rick Mathieson is a gifted and talented writer, and "Branding Unbound" at its outstanding best does for wireless what the Cluetrain Manifesto did for the Internet. Geeks and marketing execs alike will love this book, which is by far one of the best marketing books of the year.

In short, I enjoyed reading Gregory's autobiography. To come from such extreme poverty to become the successful and noted Black activist/comedian that he is speaks volumes about his tenacity and determination. Follow Gregory as he talks about his struggles as a youth in St. Louis, to his college days at Southern Illinois University, to his adult life when he gets the first inklings of becoming a professional comedian, his marriage, and his time spent as an activist during the civil rights movement in the South. He is definitely one of the last of Black America's freedom fighters.

                      5 out of 5 stars Enlightening.......2006-10-25

For someone who did not live the integration of blacks in the US, this book is fantastic. I was shocked to read the differences that happened not so long ago. It makes me feel proud of how far we've come.

It also conveys different messages as an extremely poor kid moves up and transforms into a successful and inspiring person. It is filled with human emotions: candid expressions of unfairness, manipulation, fear, disgust, compassion, humor, resilience, frustration, success, love, acceptance. If a person lived in the US during the 50-60s, it might bring up lost emotions.

Throughout the hard times there is not a word of victimization but a word of hope, of getting things done, or making things happen.

The highlight of the book to me is on page 197, when Gregory reflects upon Martin Luther King's speech "I have a dream" in just few lines.... "that day I felt like the Negro had been given his equal rights". After all people went through it is a beautiful sentence.

I think this book is great for anyone thinking their life is hard or needing a dose of resilience. You will get some good laughs too at Gregory's comedy and naivety.

5 out of 5 stars "The most hateful word ever spoken.".......2006-08-01

This book should be read by every black person in America. Especially Kanye West, 50 Cent and all of the other unconscious so-called rappers, who continue to use the "N" word in their music. Our black youth need to know the true history of that word, and the shame and hurt that it still brings to this day. They say, "Oh its O.K. for a brother to call me a nigger, but not O.K. for the white man. Then it's time to fight." How idiotic!!!

It was and continues to be the most hateful word ever spoken, regardless of who says it. My first sting of that word was felt when I attended college in Utica, NY. In 1983, while me and some black classmates headed to our table at a restaurant, as we passed a group of local white teens, one of them shouted "Let's leave, I refuse to dine in the same place as those niggers. They smell like pigs." My second sting was felt in 1999, while driving through the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago, IL an old white man sitting on his porch yelled, "Get out of here nigger."

Those stings will always remain with me. I could never call another human being such a hurtful word...it is my hope and prayer that everyone who has read or who will read this book feels the same. Let's all do our part to eradicate this hateful word from being spoken.

5 out of 5 stars Still inspiring, after 40 years.......2006-05-02

Another great testament of how hard work and determination bring good results. Gregory's story is still inspiring, even after more than 40 years. Prior to reading his book, if I had to use a few words to describe what he was about, I could only think of "the Dick Gregory diet" and ex-comedian. Although I had heard that he was involved in the Civil Rights movement, I didn't realize the extent of his involvement, nor his impact. I have a new level of respect for him. I also noticed that in the latter years-from 1960 to 1964 when the book was written, his activism took center stage and his comedy was barely mentioned.

Many poignant moments are in the book, of course. For instance, during a rally, a white man spat in his face, and due to the non-violent nature of the rally, he simply allowed the spit to drain into his mouth as he responded with sarcastic but peaceful words to the offender. I cannot ever afford to forget what others went through for me to enjoy the advances in equality today.

The style of writing is also effective. It flows smoothly, and I was able to read the book within a three day period. No portion of the book dragged on with unnecessary details, in my opinion. The 209 pages were well used.

If the book offended you, then you deserved it.
You are kind the person that is incapable of understanding what life was like for others of another race.
What makes you holier than thou? If a white commits a white collar crime (look at enron) sets up a deal of immunity get a slap on the wrist instead of doing his hole time, that is okay right? President Bush could lie to the country and thats ok right?
And you don't approve of Gregory? Wow...
Guess what, Mr. Dick Gregory is not losing any sleep over your lame comments.
He has forgotten more knowledge than you could possibly ever know. The man has walked among giants in this society; Mr Gregory is considered an icon, while you my friend are considered a loser.
Get a life and stick to reading manuals on anti-government propoganda, bomb-making and making your own currency.

                      Book Description

More than any other black leader, H. Rap Brown, chairman of the radical Black Power organization SNCC, came to symbolize the ideology of black revolution. Die Nigger Die!-which was first published in 1969, went through seven printings, and has long been unavailable-tells the story of the making of a revolutionary. But it is much more than a personal history-it is a call to arms, an urgent message to the black community to be the vanguard force in the struggle of oppressed people. Forthright, sardonic, and shocking, Die Nigger Die! is not only an illuminating and dynamic reading experience, but a vitally important document that is essential to understanding the upheavals of the late 1960s. University of Massachusetts professor Ekwueme Michael Thelwell has updated this edition, covering Brown's decades of harassment by law enforcement agencies, his extraordinary transformation into an important Muslim leader, and his sensational trial.

This is the autobiography of the type of man who has long gone out of style in the black community--an original man. While down-to-earth in manner, H. Rap Brown had a understated intelligence that served him well. But it's his ability to translate thoughts into words that make this book worth reading. From issues like skin color to class divisions, Brown outlines many issues that still face the black community today.

A lot of political works get caught in the trap of trying to reflect the intelligence of the writer, Brown does the best job of effectively communicating from the black street perspective.
I'm sure he would like for everyone who reads this to read his Revolution by the Book, and when you compare the two you can chart the evolution of an original man, from street scholar to religious cleric. Read it for yourself and make up your own mind.

5 out of 5 stars A classic on Black liberation.......2003-03-23

When H.Rap Brown's classic autobiography was first published, he was former chair of SNCC, the leading Black liberation group in the United States. Back then, I used this book as an introduction to the Black Power movement. Rap Brown was a grassroots leader, and he spoke the language of the grassroots community. In my estimate, H. Rap Brown was one of the most successful political agitators of the black revolt. With the exception of Malcolm X, there were few that could match his effectiveness of moving people in the streets. For that precise reason, Brown, now Imam Jamil Al-Amin, has been a key victim of repression, for fighting for black liberation.

3 out of 5 stars An anachronistic rant against "the system.".......2002-10-18

                      H. Rap Brown has been called the african-american Jim Goad. In Mr. Brown's case, however, his screed is directed not at women and liberals but instead at "honkeys," "crackers" and, of course, "THE MAN!" This autobiography gives the reader insight into the anger that fueled one man's efforts to bring down "the system." Overall, though, the book is kinda insubstantial and considering the darn thing cost nearly 15 bones, there are much better books on the subject.

4 out of 5 stars Richard Pryor meets Malcolm X.......2002-06-20

While rightfully cited as an articulation of Black anger in the 60s, there are portions of this book that are difficult to take seriously. Rap/El-Amin's hilarious descriptions of pilfering items in Lyndon Johnson's White House, the story of his being stopped by the Louisiana cops for wearing ragged clothes, his refusal to eat or drink anything in prison for 43 DAYS (last time I checked in biology class, no human could go that long without water) etc. come off like wild tall tales told by one of Richard Pryor's characters. Even when the book is serious, there is never a dull moment. His observations on Ebony magazine, poor whites, and the explaination of the book's title, will make you laugh as well as think. Oh yeah, check out his "Rap" early on in the book, the contents of which would make NWA blush!

The recent noteriety of Rap/El-Amin adds a somber note to the proceedings, but in the meantime, read this. You can see why this wild, controversial, and colorful book was so popular in the late 1960s. A cross between Richard Pryor and Malcolm X! Certainly one of the most entertaining of the Black Power manifestos.

White Niggers of America is a manifesto that depicts the life of a working class child growing up within a province exploited by those in power.
Pierre Vallieres begins by offering his life-story as an exploration of a young man who leaves Quebec with feelings of betrayal and later, coming to terms with the state of his homeland, returns to invoke revolution.
The book offers a gripping depiction of Quebec prior to, and early into the Quiet Revolution, but fails short of convincing this reader that economic and political reforms demand violence. In all, I believe that this is an excellent book for those interested in understanding the mind of one who feels that violent revolution (terrorism, or guerrila warfare if you like) is the only means to change.
This book convinces me on the need for every English Canadian to reflect on our country's history (by this, I refer to what we are taugh at school, if the subject was discussed at all), but fails in justifying the violence committed by the FLQ.

                                      Book Description

Civil War Ironclads supplies the first comprehensive study of one of the most ambitious programs in the history of naval shipbuilding. In constructing its new fleet of ironclads, William H. Roberts explains, the U.S. Navy faced the enormous engineering challenges of a largely experimental technology. In addition, it had to manage a ship acquisition program of unprecedented size and complexity. To meet these challenges, the Navy established a "project office" that was virtually independent of the existing administrative system. The office spearheaded efforts to broaden the naval industrial base and develop a marine fleet of ironclads by granting shipbuilding contracts to inland firms. Under the intense pressure of a wartime economy, it learned to support its high-technology vessels while incorporating the lessons of combat.

But neither the broadened industrial base nor the advanced management system survived the return of peace. Cost overruns, delays, and technical blunders discredited the embryonic project office, while capital starvation and never-ending design changes crippled or ruined almost every major builder of ironclads. When Navy contracts evaporated, so did the shipyards. Contrary to widespread belief, Roberts concludes, the ironclad program set Navy shipbuilding back a generation.

Kropotkin writes with the heart of one true to his ideals, with depth that Marx cannot reach, and intelligence that few can exceed. Revolutionary and scientist, this anti-aristocratic man of aristocratic birth explains elegantly and pleasantly the sound empirical foundations of his theory of anarchist philosophy. From the bottom up, he creates his compelling arguments in support of a world where all men and women are equal, where private property is abolished, and all work together, freely and voluntarily for the common and individual good. The libertarian communism of Kropotkin inspires orders of magnitude beyond the authoritarian communism described by Marx. His pamphlets, contained in the book, bring to life this long maligned political philosophy called anarchism. If you read these works and walk away without a sympathetic view towards anarchism, you have either not truly read them or your soul has become poisoned with the dark sufferings of life under capitalism.

Prince Peter Kropotkin was the first thinker since William Godwin to construct a full system of anarcho-collectivism. This collection consists of a bunch of satisfying niblets (yes, niblets) of that system, some better than others.

First, anyone into anarchism has got to read Kropotkins essay of that title for the Encyclopedia Britannica. It has to be the clearest written, most well-stated short intro around. His essay on "The Anarchist Morality (written oddly enough as a retort to some kids who, after stealing some books, justified it with "To each according to his need.")The early essays, which take us through the first hundred-or-so pages are the best, as they get into the underlying theory of anarchism and what "sponteneous order" might look like. Of course "Modern Science and Anarchism" is a complete misnomer because the essay is heavy on philosophical speculation with not much scientific speculation. The latter essays are more-or-less historical propoganda and will be of interest to the history student.

Still, in a world of inarticulate and often unsavory characters, Kropotkin comes off as astute, thoughtful, clear and insightful. Of course, science has (done its best to?)prove Kropotkin wrong on his altruistic evolutionary theories. Even modern "reciprical altruists" in the wake of Dawkins, Wilson and Ridley are looking less altruistic and more reciprical. I guess only time will tell. Hmmmm....

This book is the best introduction to Kropotkin's ideas that I have read and it even gives a somewhat unbiased definition of anarchism that Kropotkin had written for the Encyclopedia Britannica. Since it is a series of pamphlets that Kropotkin had written, and was originally intended for the specific purpose of informing and winning the support of the public, it is presented in a clear, concise, and easily digestable fashion, without pretense.

In Discovering Birds, Paul Lawrence Farber rejects the view that eighteenth-century natural history disappeared with the rise of nineteenth-century biology. In this penetrating case study of the history of ornithology, Farber demonstrates interesting continuities: as natural history evolved into individual sciences (botany, geology, and zoology) and specialties (entomology and ichthyology), the study of birds emerged as a distinct scientific discipline that remained observational and taxonomic. Ornithologists continued to see one of their primary tasks as classification, and they found no need to alter their approach.

Their efforts were greatly aided at the end of the eighteenth century as colonization and exploration brought new dataa plethora of exotic and previously unknown birds. By the mid-nineteenth century, ornithology had become a scientific discipline with international experts, a large empirical base, and a rigorous methodology of watching and cataloging.
