Book Description
From the Illinois border to Green Bay, Wisconsin's Ethnic Settlement Trail encompasses twelve counties along Lake Michigan. This lavishly illustrated book highlights the folk artists who have carried on traditions of their ethnic communities, from Slovak wheat weaving and African American quilting to the Alte Kamerade Band that has played German music in Freistadt, Wisconsin for more than fifty years.
Distributed for the Cedarburg Cultural Center.
Book Description
Following the success of her first book about neckties, Popular & Collectible Neckties: 1955 to the Present, Roseann Ettinger presents the new volume. Over 400 hundred color photographs illustrate the development of the necktie, from the turn of the century, through the Roaring Twenties, the Depression, and the War years. These neckties represent a record of textile and fashion trends, in what was often the only splash of color a man dared to wear. Most of these superb examples are in mint condition, and the photography captures their true color and pattern. A price guide is included for the collector.
Customer Reviews:
Some ties but no cigar.......1999-06-18
As a price guide the quotes may have been relevant five years ago or reflect the rural Pennsylvania market, but they are not an accurate reflection of the hot demand on both coasts. The current revival is based on the resurgence of the retro tie and swing band culture. The author spends too many pages on the first forty years of neckwear, which few current tie collectors are interested in. Frankly, these ties are boring. The most unfortunate overriding failure of the book is the dismal photography which makes the few exciting ties muted and restrained in their presentation.Another shortfall is the paucity of any of the human interest stories associated with either the tie creators or wearers. The only real bright spot is the great forties advertising, which is a direct lift from much better books.

New Yorker cartoonist Danny Shanahan wittily portrays litigious living in this hilarious volume of 120-plus cartoons on lawyers, legal matters, and courtroom antics. From corporate contretemps to judicial jujitsu, Innocent, Your Honor, a new addition to Abrams' popular line of books by New Yorker cartoonists, covers a wide compendium of colorful characters and twisted tales.
Law is the profession we all love to hate, and this book shows us why. From an aspiring attorney, who confesses, "I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die. After that, law school was pretty much a given," to the mythical Hercules signing a contract where ". . . she gets the house, the chariot, and custody of the kids. You get to keep the lion skin," to a terrifying future in which "everyone will be a lawyer for fifteen minutes," Shanahan's offbeat humor is sure to delight anyone who is involved in the legal profession or who has an upcoming day in court. Just don't sue him if you hurt yourself laughing! AUTHOR BIO: Danny Shanahan has published more than 700 cartoons, covers, and illustrations in The New Yorker since his work first appeared there in 1988. His work has appeared in Playboy, Esquire, Time, and many other periodicals, and he has illustrated a number of humor and children's books. He lives in Rhinebeck, New York.

Great gift!!.......2007-07-25
These cartoons are funny, and the book is great for lawyers or for anyone. Nice gift for someone who has "everything," or for an unusual gift for an office party.

The thirty-six undeniably hilarious stories that comprise THE RISING GORGE, culled from such magazines as The New Yorker, Holiday, and Redbook, represent the writings of S. J. Perelman during the 1940s and 1950s, regarded by many critics and fans as the author's most productive and noteworthy period. Book Description
This autobiography is the first full-length book in English on Nicolai Gedda, born in Sweden in 1925 but deeply influenced by his Russian-born stepfather, himself a singer with a renowned Russian emigre choir. A leading tenor throughout the latter half of the 20th century, Gedda is acclaimed both for the beauty of his voice and the rare intelligence with which he uses it; he is perhaps the most versatile of tenors, equally at home in opera and song, and the master of nine languages and a wide range of musical styles. These memoirs, written in collaboration with his wife, comment frankly on the events of his life and on the international music scene, revealing both his serious devotion to his art and his indifference to fame and celebrity. HARDCOVER.
Customer Reviews:
A refreshing look at a real divo........2007-09-02
This for any opera lover is a must. Mr Gedda was one of the great singers between the 1950s and 1980s, he did not take a backseat to any of his contemporary. His book is wonderful reading, it reveals the human side of a great artist and the humility of a grand person. Highly recommended reading, you will be overjoyed.
Entertaining but ............2007-07-06
I found this book to be extremely readable. However, I do not believe Mr. Gedda is as modest as he claims to be. Granted his childhood was terrible, with his father's beatings and his mother's verbal abuse but I find it hard to be completely sympathetic to him. Maybe because he chooses to wipe out his parents' transgressions that he turned out to be more docile than other singers. Not to mention living with his family when he should have flown the coup and still letting his parents control his life long past when he should have stood up on his own. There is something very childlike about him.
He's not the only child to find his mother isn't who he thinks she was. Bobby Darin was an adult when he found out his real mother was his "sister." Damaging, indeed.
What I found annoying was Mr. Gedda never gave a bad performance; everyone was well received while others were less fortunate. Hard to believe. And he's particularly hard on just about anyone who helped him, especially Walter Legge, simply because the man was cold. And all his agents, producers and publicists all were unhelpful.
And his comments about the Met's standards no longer as high as they once had been really galled me. Especially when he said young people aren't so anxious to perform there. Really? I cannot imagine one singer today who would turn down an appearance at the Met and the chance to perform on a broadcast heard around the world. And of course all other opera houses still have high quality performances all the time. No opera house in the world ever had some failures, some bad runs. The Met is still a grand house with wonderful productions. Guess Mr. Gedda never had time to see them.
I would rank this book as self-serving and petty.
Gedda.......2007-02-16
The book is great, and gives us an understanding of what makes Mr. Gedda the artist that he is. I already knew a great deal about Mr. Gedda but it is wonderful to read about his life.
A fine biography of the great Swedish Tenor.......2001-06-20
Nicolai Gedda is one of the greatest Tenors of our time, and especially in French repertoire, he is second to none. This biography is a lovely gift to Gedda's admirers. It was to be hoped that there should be more information and data of his stage performances.
The truth....even if it hurts.......2000-02-27
After reading one of the reviews I wasn't so sure about this book; after all, I have been an great admirer of Nicolai Gedda since first hearing him at the Metropolitan in 1962 and I found it hard to imagine him as "petulant". I decided to take a chance on this book and I was very impressed by the truthfulness that Mr. Gedda has: unless you have been yourself a victim of psychological and emotional abuse it is very easy to state that the person is petty on past wrongs. That does not apply in Mr. Gedda's case at all: it seems like this biography is a form of journelling for him and he has finally been able to let go emotionally of the years of pent-up distress he suffered from the abuse in his family.....something NONE of the loyal fans that we were backstage at the Met had any clue about. Also, the book is very imformative as to his technique and opinions on literature: discography a little sketchy....I highly recommend this book: it must have hurt him to reveal all the suffering he went through, but he released his torment by doing that....and thanks to Aino, Nicolai Gedda has finally found the happiness he deserves, after giving all of us the pleasure of hearing him sing (through years of his inner struggles): read the book--it's worth it!

Book Description
For more than 200 years, the U.S. Marine Corps has been a paragon of world-class leadership, excelling in the areas of motivation, training, and management. Semper Fi -- which since its hardcover publication has become a best-selling, business leadership classic -- shows readers how to adapt these proven practices for their own organizations. Now in a paperback edition with a new introduction by the authors, Semper Fi goes behind the scenes to pinpoint what works for the USMC, showing readers how to create a training and management culture that brings out the best in all their employees. The book gives readers tough, practical tips for:* inspiring individual initiative * rewarding hard work * encouraging loyalty * working with limited resources * dealing with change * "leading the troops" at every level of the organization"This is not," according to Dan Rather, "one of those mumbo-jumbo, pseudo-philosophical books on leadership. Semper Fi is a book you will actually USE, read, and refer to again and again."
Customer Reviews:
A lot depends on your people and your culture.......2007-02-19
Semper Fi does a good job of relating the organizational and cultural strengths of the Marine Corps to successful essentials for corporate America. The beginning of the book emphasizes the importance of recruiting and maintaining the enthusiasm and energy or new hires. The book keeps it focus on sharing the attributes of the Marine Corps' organizational attributes contributing to its success rather than organizing around what corporate America needs and how the Marine Corps has solved those problems. Strongly recommended for HR professionals and managers leading large organizations. Always a good book for former Marines although some may remember a few details of Marine life differently.
Leadership Requires That You Lead!.......2007-02-04
Want to develop sound leadership and solid loyalty? This book clears up many of the misconceptions of USMC training and brings the same form of positive supportive leadership into the civilian and business world. Leadership is more than just telling people what to do. Leadership is established by being in the front lines with all your "troops". It's you're willingness to get your shoes just as dirty as anyone else's while providing an example of being out in front and at the same time making sure that everyone is up there with you. You, the leader, are the example! It is extremely well-written and should be in any top sensei's [martial arts instructor's] book collection. Dan Carrison is one of my Black Belts. I recommend this book to all my black belts!
A great read to learn why USMC excels, though not highly commercial world applicable.......2006-10-17
In case you want to know how this 175,000 strong force is led/managed to live up to the "Send the Marines" legend, you will be largely satisfied. Many unique features, including the Buddy System (two friends get recruited, trained, and deployed together), Tour of Duty (a Marine can opt to remain or transfer several times during the enlistment period of four years), the strong emphasis on quality HR and recruiters, the "Crucible" (the 54 sleepless hours of hellish training with only one meal), the need for an officer/NCO to be better in all aspects (esp physically) than his fellow men till his retirement and so on are vividly discussed. However, I am obliged to comment that the successful principles of USMC are not readily applicable to the commercial world, primarily because, as per pg 123, "Unlike the Marine Corps, the workplace environment is not one of self sacrifice. Employees are motivated much more by self interest than by the collective good and are not shy about asking, "Why did he or she get this assignment and not me?" Anyway, this is definitely a good read. Highly recommended!
Below please find my most favorite passages for your reference:-
One of the legends every NCO has heard tells of a young officer who did not return an enlisted man's salute - and was subsequently ordered by the renowned Marine general Chesty Puller to stand there and salute the nervous private one hundred times. pg 66
The "monkey experiment" is a classic laboratory experiment that illustrates exactly what the Marines try to avoid - the thoughtless passing from one group to another of a learned tradition. Six monkeys were put into a cage in which bananas were suspended by chains...when a monkey pulled on the bananas, the entire group received a shower of cold water. It didnt take long for the six monkeys to learn that the bananas were to be left alone. A new monkey was then introduced into the group, while one of the original monkeys were removed. Of course, the newcomer saw the bananas and thought it was in monkey paradise. But, as it climbed upward, the five remaining original monkeys would actually prevent it from reaching the bananas.....Other newcomers were introduced, for each one, a monkey from the original group was removed.....Soon, none of the original group was left in the cage, yet the bananas were undisturbed - by monkeys who had never felt the cold shower themselves and who did not know why the bananas were to be left alone. pg 115
Today, teams of recruits clash in the pugil stick circle so that one learns not to just fight for himself but for his buddy as well. If his buddies are "killed", the remaining recruit must defend himself against multiple attackers, who close in intelligently, as a team. Thus teamwork is taught while defending and attacking. pg 130
If a manager has not called his own customer service desk in a week, then he has no idea how many times the phone will ring before it is answered, how politely the customer will be greeted, how willingly that customer will be helped and then thanked. pg 171
p.s. Semper Fidelis (Always Faihtful), the motto of USMC, is an indication of how much value is placed upon the virtue of loyalty.
Rename to: Business Management the Marine Corps Way.......2005-12-14
Overall the book had many good concepts, but were more in line with management philosophys rather than leadership. I was expecting a book to align an individual to lead an organization, but what I got was a great book on how to align an organization.
Totally new approach to corporate leadership.......2005-08-05
Semper fidelis-Latin for "always faithful"-is both the motto of the U.S. Marine Corps and the inspiration for this totally new approach to corporate leadership.
Written by two former marines who are now successful businessmen, Semper Fi goes behind the scenes to pinpoint what works for the USMC. But the book is about far more than barking orders to underlings, mandating a grueling fitness program, or charging over the top with bayonets flashing. Rather, it takes the best leadership tactics used by the Corps and translates them to a corporate environment-with results that can be surprising and highly effective.
For all the differences between the armed services and the profit-driven corporation, they share a key goal: to build and sustain a committed, motivated group of people that will band together to achieve success. Semper Fi is an evocative and ingenious guide for making that goal a reality.
Book Description
They had met and married on perilously short acquaintance, she an American chef and food writer, he a Venetian banker. Now they were taking another audacious leap, unstitching their ties with exquisite Venice to live in a roughly renovated stable in Tuscany.
Once again, it was love at first sight. Love for the timeless countryside and the ancient village of San Casciano dei Bagni, for the local vintage and the magnificent cooking, for the Tuscan sky and the friendly church bells. Love especially for old Barlozzo, the village mago, who escorts the newcomers to Tuscany’s seasonal festivals; gives them roasted country bread drizzled with just-pressed olive oil; invites them to gather chestnuts, harvest grapes, hunt truffles; and teaches them to caress the simple pleasures of each precious day. It’s Barlozzo who guides them across the minefields of village history and into the warm and fiercely beating heart of love itself.
A Thousand Days in Tuscany is set in one of the most beautiful places on earth–and tucked into its fragrant corners are luscious recipes (including one for the only true bruschetta) directly from the author’s private collection.

(4.5 stars) A gorgeous tribute to Tuscany and her people..........2007-09-28
A THOUSAND DAYS IN TUSCANY is Marlena de Blasi's second memoir recounting her life in Italy, after 2002's A THOUSAND DAYS IN VENICE. In the book's opening pages, she and her husband and soul mate, Fernando, have left Venice for a dilapidated farmouse deep in the Tuscan countryside. The residents of the idyllic village near their new home welcome them with a meal, which inevitably lasts for hours, ending with a dessert whose cream was just milked from a blue-eyed cow that morning. Subsequently, Marlena and Fernando are befriended by Barlozzo, one of the town's oldest residents, who is eager to share stories about the locals and to introduce them to timeless Tuscan traditions: hunting for truffles, baking bread, picking olives for olive oil, crushing grapes for wine, harvesting chestnuts... But it's not just Tuscany that Marlena and Fernando learn about during their stay in one of the world's most beautiful places; they also learn a lot about each other and about themselves, and a lot about what it means to slow down and enjoy a life free from the hustle and bustle of the modern world.
This was a beautiful, beautiful book, with some of the most stunning writing I've ever come across. De Blasi's descriptions bring Old World Tuscany utterly and completely to life; you can almost taste the olive oil, can almost feel the grapes bursting under your feet, can almost imagine yourself there, in an old Tuscan farmhouse, starting out the window at that marvelous landscape. The pictures de Blasi paints of the townspeople are insightful and vibrant, and the recipes at the end of every chapter are completely succulent, including the recipe for the "one true bruschetta" (no tomatoes, no garlic, no onion or herbs...just fresh-baked toasted bread doused in olive oil and topped with a little bit of sea salt). It's really obvious from her writing that de Blasi loves everything about Italy: her people, her food, her breathtaking vistas and her sun-drenched, relaxed way of life.
I fell in love with Marlena de Blasi's Italy, with her gorgeous writing, her delicious traditional Tuscan recipes, and her vivid portrayals of the people who live in the beauty and romance of Tuscany every day. There were moments when I felt like her writing bordered on pretentious, but mostly I just thought everything about this book was gorgeous. I haven't read A THOUSAND DAYS IN VENICE, but I'm definitely going to. You can definitely tell how much Fernando and Marlena are in love in this book, but I'm eager to learn how their love story began.
The Tuscan state of mind can best be summed up with the following passage, spoken by one of Marlena's dearest Tuscan friends: "Maybe the only thing that matters is to make our lives last as long as we do. You know, to make a life last until it ends, to make all the parts come out even, like when you rub the last piece of bread in the last drop of oil on your plate and eat it with the last sip of wine in your glass." A THOUSAND DAYS IN TUSCANY is a book for people in love, for people who long for a simpler way of life, for people who go to that idyllic Tuscan countryside every night in their dreams. I loved everything about this book!
Over to quickly!.......2007-05-07
I found myself reading slower as I got near the end of this story. I didn't want it to end. A THOUSAND DAYS IN VENICE was a delightful book but I found this one more captivating. Ms. De Blasi weaves a beautiful, true adventure as if the reader was traveling along with her each step of the way. Her descriptions and characters are so real in her words I thought I might be there. BRAVA, de Blasi!!!!!!!!!
I'm in love with De Blasi's Italy.......2007-05-06
I've read A Thousand Days in Venice, A Thousand Days in Tuscany and The Lady in the Palazzo. Once I started the first, A Thousand Days in Venice, I was hooked. These are love stories about an American woman of a certain age who fell in love with a Venetian man of a certain age, and more. De Blasi loves this blueberry eyed man with a passion not to be duplicated. She also loves the people, the food, the customs the land. She learns to live in Italy, speak the language, read and dream in Italian and she pushes the box each time she reaches out to someone, which is often. Her recipes are wonderfull. I'm trying to figure out if I can find walnut flour in Minnesota.
Read it as a travelog, as a cookbook, as a love story. Just read all of the books.
A Thousand Days in Tuscany.......2007-01-18
It is a good book but rather slow. However, I will have to say I have enjoyed reading about this woman's time living in Tuscany. The recipes that she wrote really sound good. I will be trying some.
She shows her love of Italy through her writings.......2006-11-05
I read her first book A Thousand Days in Venice and enjoyed it very much. It seemed so real like we were sitting over coffee discussing her life. It made me want to walk the same places she walked and see the same markets to bring it to life for me too.
She has a smooth way of writing that is enjoyable. And the recipes are wonderful.
She again brought Tuscany to life for me and I wanted to see the villages and cucina's there. I am looking forward to the 2007 book.
Customer Reviews:
Incredible pictures.......2006-08-10
I agree with the other reviewer, not much writing here. But this book is a HOME RUN with pictures - probably one of the best WW2 uniform books I've owned or seen. There is a tremendous amount of content, more than enough to justify its cost.
Great photos, context lacking.......2005-01-20
Color photographs of rare uniform items, associated insignia, and field equipment used in the Wehrmacht's tropical campaigns are outstanding. Moreover, the selection of period black-and-white photographs is exceptional - nearly all of them are unpublished and all should be of interest to both the historian and militaria collector. Unfortunately, a number of their accompanying captions contain errors or omissions, and often fail to provide context of a respective unit's operations in the North African or Mediterranean campaigns. I realize that this work is not intended to be an operational history or order-of-battle tabulation, but found that the lack of more background perspective was dissatisfying. I haven't yet seen the companion volume, which covers documents and paper items - perhaps it provides the historical framework that is lacking in Volume 1.

Bedtime stories will never again be the same--at least not after reading James Finn Garner, who, in surprisingly true Fairy Godmother fashion, waved his authorial wand and revised a large collection of fairy tales and holiday lore in Politically Correct: The Ultimate Storybook. This volume compiles his three separately published books, Politically Correct Bedtime Stories, Once Upon a More Enlightened Time, and Politically Correct Holiday Stories, examining the many "isms," whether glaringly obvious or more subtle, inherent in traditional favorites.
The tales begin similarly to their Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson predecessors, but veer suddenly to incorporate non-offensive, politically correct language and modern issues that range from overzealous lawyers to rampant real estate development to the destruction of the environment. Garner refashions over two dozen tales including Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella, plucking damsels and the disenfranchised from captive plot lines, increasing their self-awareness, spunk and dialogue ten-fold, then settles them comfortably back into tales where they can live happily ever after as confident, happy, successful entrepreneurs with a social mission.
The disclaimers preceding each of the three sections, as well as the abundant use of politically correct speech throughout the collection, appears at times more of a pointed mockery than a true attempt to enlighten stories locked in medieval thought. The tales do however, offer a witty and clever alternative to spoon-fed tradition. --Mara Shurgot
Customer Reviews:
Great fun. Somebody really needed to write books like this, and I am glad he did..........2006-12-19
Kudos to Mr. Garner. I have read all three books. I think the bedtime story book 1 and the Holiday story book are the best. I am employed in a large metro area, where we seem to be inundated with all this touchy-feely, politically correct stuff - I see it in memos and we have training to attend from time to time where we hear terms like those in the books. Garner does such an excellent job showing how ridiculous it can get and how ridiculous many of them are. Any time I need a good laugh I read one of his updated stories, and have a good "belly laugh". I absolutely love these books.
Best Book in the world.......2006-05-27
This book is hands down the best book in the world. It is extremely intelligent and is the most interesting book to our imagination.Brilliant humor in every paragraph or sentence for that matter. There was no book like it..of course, now others are expanding on Mr.Garners idea.I have the shorter version but it was disappointing as it didnt have all of his humorous stories..this book,Once Upon a More Enlightend Time etc..is the book i take everywhere.I do not get tired of reading the funny terms..definately takes away the realities of reality and grumpy people who have no sense of decent humor.Lighten up,have fun with this book.Mr.G,your a GENIUS.
Great Book!.......2003-07-08
This was very entertaining to me. Read the whole thing with a grin on my face. I really enjoyed the authors humour in telling the stories over only in a politically correct way. Great read for anyone needing a smile.
Very funny, boys, very funny, ha ha ha.......2002-09-01
I first read some of these stories quite a while ago. I enjoyed the Snow White story quite a bit, and having spent some time in a trailer park, I can easily understand the people in Pied Piper of Hamelin. Although I am not a feminist and think personally that the old values are better than the new ones, I can still appreciate the humour in most of the stories. I can't say I enjoyed all of them though.
Mostly the reason I got this book was because of the Christmas collection, which is by far the best set of these stories that James Garner has done. This section gets three of my stars.
"The Night Before Solstice" is a very well-done parody. "The children were nestled all snug in their beds, dreaming of lentils and warm whole-grain breads..." He talks about how overfed Santa is and how bad smoking is for Santa's health.
"Frosty the Snowman" concerns two argumentative children who build a snowman and when he tells them he's going to melt, they march to Washington to protest about abuse of the ozone layer.
"Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer" is the story of a disliked outsider who suddenly became OK to Santa when Santa could get some use out of him. But Rudolf won't have any of it. He says the deer are underprivileged and need a more flexible work schedule and a retirement plan.ù
"The Nutcracker" is in here too, but at the time I read it I didn't know the real story and therefore it didn't make any impression on me.
The there's "A Christmas Carol"... You know, the story that begins with that famous line: "Jacob Marley was non-viable." The ghosts try to teach him all he needs to know. The second one in particular I remember. He was a fat slob and went from house to house to raid the fridge. When all is said and done, Scrooge decides he's a victim of circumstance like Diminutive Timòn... It's all quite involved and you really have to read it for yourself. But it's very funny. I've read it many times. (I recommend that you read the real story by Dickens first - it's not that long - it will make you laugh more at the PC one.)
So if for nothing else, get this for the Christmas section.
Great Book.......2000-12-13
This book was funny, witty, and had a wry sense of humor. The author, James Finn Garner, has commented on our modern society in a politically correct manner that will have you howling with laughter. He satirizes traditional fairy tales and folk tales and yet they have a charm of their own!! I am sure you will love this book. My hobby is storytelling, and audiences really love these stories.
