Must-Have Batman Stories in a Gorgeous Hardcover.......2006-08-01
The Complete Frank Miller Batman is an absolute must-have for Batman fans, Frank Miller fans, and pretty much anyone who loves comics. This deluxe, leather-bound, silver leaf hardcover collects Frank Millers seminal works Batman: Year One and Batman: the Dark Knight Returns, with a Christmas-themed short story serving as an interlude between the two epics.
These two Batman epics are considered among the best, if not the absolute best, Batman stories ever. Year One shows a young Bruce Wayne embarking on his one-man war on crime in a Gotham City that is as rife with corruption as it is plagued by criminals. Police Captain James Gordon is the other star of the series, and his struggle to remain an ethical cop in a sea of corruption is just as interesting as Batman's initial assaults against the criminal underworld. Miller's writing is flawless, and David Mazzuchelli's artwork sets the tone perfectly. His art reminds us that this is not bright shiny Metropolis we're seeing, but dirty grimy Gotham City. This brilliant story serves as the definitive origin of the Batman, and remains a classic to this day.
If Year One served as the first chapter in the Batman saga, then the Dark Knight Returns is the final chapter. In a nutshell, the series deals with a middle-aged Batman returning to crime fighting after a lengthy retirement. In reality, this series changed the look and feel of comic books forever. It was unlike anything that had come before it, and its influence on the genre is incalculable. Dark Knight is an uncompromising look at what really drives Bruce Wayne, Commissioner Gordon, the Joker and even Superman and Green Arrow, and what the potential sociopolitical consequences of superhero activity might be. And though it is set in the near future, it also serves as an indictment of the 1980's Reagan-era mentality. Miller again tapped a former Daredevil collaborator, Klaus Janson, to assist with the artwork, which is simply stunning. Colorist Lynne Varley does a fantastic job as well, adding vitality to each page that must be seen to be believed. The Dark Knight Returns is, in my humble opinion, the ultimate Batman story. Nothing I've read before or since, with the exception of Year One, has ever come close.
The fact that these two critically important tales are collected back-to-back, and in such a spectacular fashion, makes the Complete Frank Miller Batman an essential item for every comic fan's bookshelf. It also makes an excellent gift, as it is not something you're going to run across at your average chain bookstore. This volume gets my highest possible recommendation.
Excellent collector's item.......2005-10-02
I had read the Dark Knight Returns years before I picked up this edition, but I can't say that I'm disappointed in having both. First off the quality of this edition is a stellar leather binding which can take the roughest wear and tear.
The contents include two of the best comic/graphic novels ever done (Dark Knight Returns - An aging Batman comes out of retirement to get the world back on track and get in his fix of butt kicking ; Batman: Year One - More of Jim Gordon's story intermixed with the Batman origin within the shared background of early Gotham City.) The third, Santa Claus: Wanted Dead or Alive isn't bad, however it's just filler compared to the first two more iconic offerings in this work.
A couple of pages of behind the scenes discussion with Frank Miller round out this offering making it a must if you have neither Dark Knight Returns or Year One.
A Must Have .......2005-06-07
I was lucky. Very, very lucky. I got this hardbound book when there was a slight slump in comic book sales (especially trade paperbacks). I got this book not ever reading any of Frank Miller's work on Batman, but I did know Miller from his work on Wolverine and the X-Men. If there was ever a perfect format to collect these works this is it.
The book is solid. VERY solid. I have had it over 12 years now with not a single sign of wear. Granted I take good care of it, but that meant leaving it on the floor now and again after reading it at the couch, using it as a coaster occasionally, and moving from place to place with it. The spine is perfect. Even the handy bookmark looks like it's in pristine condition.
Okay enough about how well the book held up physicially. The content is just as worthy to be make so resilient as the bindings. You essentially get three eras of Frank Miller in this book. My personal favorite is the Batman: Year One content, which I hear is the basis for the new Batman Begins movie (more reason to get this collection as there is a potential for increased collectibility). Miller writes Year One and David Mazucchelli does the art. A great combination. The other great era you get is Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. Here you have a Batman coming out of retirement and taking Gotham by storm... literally. The art and story are all Miller on this, which the art being in his Ronin/Sin City style. Very raw. The third era is a rather simple Christmas story Frank happened to do the art for. Nothing really to write home about (art is nice though).
Great stories. Great format. Great quality. What more can you ask?
A true "Collector's Edition".......2002-04-10
It was a strange time for comics, that this collection could be made. Sold at the height of the 80's collectors boom, "The Complete Frank Miller Batman" is a luxury edition of the type usually reserved for "Moby Dick." Leather-bound and silver lined, the book smells of quality. High paper quality and good inks contribute to a comics experience rarely seen elsewhere. Truly, it is the luxury car of comics.
The stories inside deserve this level of presentation. "The Dark Knight Returns," available in many other collected editions, is one of the premier works of art produced by the comics medium. "Batman: Year One" is a gem of equal quality. The third piece, "Wanted: Santa Claus-Dead or Alive" is not written by Miller, and lacks the drama of the other stories. He is the artist, only. Still, it is a nice single issue Batman story, representative of that era.
Also included in this edition are introductions by comics resident genius Alan Moore, as well as Richard Burning and a little introspection by Frank Miller.
Definitely worth picking up.
A Must Have for the Comic Collection.......2001-03-11
Frank Miller revolutionized comics in America, and quite possibly the world. With sophisticated plots and asorbing artwork, the reader becomes intangled with the charaters as much as he or she would with any play, movie, or novel. This collection, has two of Miller's greatist works: The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One. The third story is cute and works well in the collection as a bridge between the other two stories.
"Batman: Year One" is the first story in the collection (actually the last one of the three written) and it is a story that many Batman fans had hoped the fisrt Batman movie would have been based on. It is well told, and the major players in the Batman saga are introduced: Batman, Gordon, Alfed and Selina Kyle (Catwomen). It is a well written story and as good as any in the last 20 years of any genre.
The second story in this special is "Wanted: Santa Claus-Dead or Alive." This is a quick piece and doesn't involve too much, but does show a caring and revernt Batman.
The last is Miller's magnum opus, "The Dark Knight Returns." This four chapter story is spectacular and a great piece of work: both in story telling and various artist expression. This psychological drama deals with an aging Batman, who at the age of 55, comes back to fight crime after a ten year absence. Miller insightfully deals with many subjects now addressed by our popular media. For example, the idea of a liberal soceity blaming crime on the agents of heroism instead on personal evil. Miller writes and demonstrates that victims are innocent people who try to live a virtous life, and Batman fights to protect a city dying of a cancer.
Comic collectors need this special leather bound book with commentaries by Richard Burning and Alan Moore. Frank Miller himself writes some notes which personalizes this special edition that much more.

Many entertaining (and entirely true!) facts await your discovery as bestselling author David W. Barber takes you on another delightful romp through the pages of music history - as it ought to be taught.
Customer Reviews:
Concise, Witty and Informative.......2001-08-22
What do Jonathan Swift and Thomas Bowdler have to do with Handel? Barber does a great job of illustrating these and other historically relevant facts. The book was well written and witty. I read this book in one sitting while listening to the Messiah being performed by the Chicago St. Clements choir using the original baroque style instruments. If only every book had an accompanying orchestral score! The few illustrations were appropriate and funny. I've included some excerpts below:
Notes:
* His father wanted him to become a lawyer. His mother helped sneak a clavichord up to the attic. p 18
* Got his first break when he played organ at a Calvinist cathedral even though he was Lutheran. The previous organist was fired for showing up drunk Sunday morning. p22
* Soloist Susannah Cibber brought the audience to tears. Dr. Patrick Delany the chancellor of St. Patrick's Cathedral stood up and shouted "Woman, for this be all thy sins forgiven." p49
* The original Messiah chorus had 32 singers -16 boy trebles, 16 men, 32 piece orchestra p32
* Jonathan Swift was dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral and in an irritable state three years before his death almost cancelled the concert on confusion.
* Charles Jennens who edited five works of Shakespeare lived a couple houses down from the Bowdler family (his cousin married a Bowdler). Thomas Bowdler(1754 - 1825) took all the "dirty words" out of Shakespeare producing the Family Shakespeare. p62
* King George II started standing during the Hallelujah chorus. p74

Grim espionage adventure in the citadel of Iuz.......2000-05-02
At last! Welcome to the City of Skulls, the demoniac realm of Iuz himself. Here, the daring heroes (levels 9-12) must do the impossible - fight or sneak their way into the city, and into the dungeons below, to rescue a favored spy in the name of the King of Furyondy! Of course, it's even harder (and more fun) than they suspect... a classic Greyhawk adventure, huge and hard to find.
This is one of the most dangerous adventures ever........1998-09-26
This adventure is one of the bright spots of TSR's "From the Ashes" line of Greyhawk Adventures products. The party is hired to sneak into Dorakaa, the home city of Iuz the Evil, the half-demon Lord of Pain. The place is overrun with demonic creatures and Iuz's horrible clergy. The action is far from linear, and the adventure has the feel of a James Bond film. The most innovative aspect of this adventure is an excellent notoriety system to deal with characters or parties who make too much commotion during their stay. This adventure is good for any type of player, but the characters had better be well-equipped and ready for hordes of demons and undead.

Book Description
Demystifying Grantseeking is an inspirational and instructional guide to grantseeking. The authors--successful grantseekers in their own right--show you how to overcome the common fears fundraisers often experience and offer sound, practical advice to successful grantseeking. The book provides you with a systematic and logical way of searching for grants, and helps to identify which foundations to approach so fundraisers don't waste time on dead-end proposals.
Customer Reviews:
Three years later, I still return to this book.......2005-06-29
I purchased this book to guide me through my first grantwriting position in the winter of 2002, and I still return to it today. The sample letters are valuable, and I have successfully modified them to meet the needs of three different organizations. The filing systems make managing a huge amount of information easy. I always recommed this book to people looking to get started with grant writing, and have sung its praises at several workshops I have conducted for beginning grantwriters.
A systematic approach to grants ... and a good read, too.......2004-05-19
This book presents a systematic approach that begins with identifying your internal needs and moves through the process of research, proposal development, and outreach to funders. Myths are addressed along the way; for example, grants are not "something for nothing," but rather "rational deals between colleagues." A good read filled with specific, hands-on advice.
Very comprehensive.......2003-08-18
I am new to the grant writing field. I started my education by reading this book. I found it very informative, but easy to follow. The book is not only theoretical, but offers a great deal of "hands on" advice, including sample forms, grants, etc. The writing style was straighforward and professional. I found the book to be an excellent way to start gaining a practical understanding of this field.
Demystified!.......2002-01-19
For anyone entering the realm of grant seeking for non profits - or seeking more effective ways to do their job - Demystifying Grant Seeking is a powerful tool. This book takes the reader through the steps of setting up a usable office, making matches between agencies and foundations, writing grant applications, evaluating the process and doing it all again, tighter, quicker, better. The authors use one agency as an example, taking their audience through the entire process. No question is left unanswered, and all questions are answered patiently, graciously, and in easily understood language. This book is a great resource.

But her world changed forever on December 26, 2004 when a powerful tsunami hit the resort of Khaolak, Thailand, where she was vacationing with her boyfriend, Simon Atlee. A heartbreaking, touching, and finally uplifting account, Love, Petra will share an inspirational message of hope, faith, and love to readers everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Nice book.......2007-06-27
This book is heartbreaking, and very moving. Petra did a great job on her first novel. This isn't all about the tsunami, and the aftermath, as many reviewers have showed it to be. Many chapters deal with her life before the tsunami, and her road to becoming a model. She certainly had an interesting life! It is a quick read, but I recommend it!
An honest and inspiring memoir........2006-06-13
I just finished reading this truly inspiring and amazing story. She survived the tsunami that hit Thailand on December 26, 2004 by clinging to a palm tree for 8 hours all the while her pelvis had been crushed in several places. However, her boyfriend Simon, the love of her life, did not survive.
This woman is honest, hard-working, dedicated, loyal, loving, generous, unselfish, silly, open-minded, gentle. She has such a kind heart. Born under communism in the Czech Republic, she built her own career and became one of the world's top supermodels. She never forgot her roots -- her family and her pure core values. In this book, Petra explains how everything in her life -- all the challenges and all the lessons she learned -- helped her to survive and heal both emotionally and physically from the tsunami.
Petra is donating 100% of her proceeds of this book to a nonprofit organization that she herself started: GIVE2ASIA/HAPPY HEARTS FUND (a tsunami relief fund). So please, go out and buy (don't borrow) Love Always, Petra. You will be amazed and inspired by her story. I promise.
Peace: It's not just for hippies anymore. ~Nicole
BEAUTIFUL * I'd give it 10 stars if I could.......2006-05-10
This book called my attention since I saw it, maybe because of the tittle or the cover, then I read an article about it and decided I had to read it. If you have read some of my reviews, you would assume that I really like memoirs. This memoir is wonderful.
Particularly, I had never heard of her. I am very sure I've seen her on commercials or magazines but I just didn't know her name. The point is that I totally loved her book. She is an amazing person.
This is the story of a girl from Czech Republic who relates us her childhood before and alter communism, she tells us how she became the top model she is, how she fell in love a few times, and most important how she met the true love of her life, a British photographer, Simon Atlee, who would be taken away from her by the tsunami that hit Asia in December 2005.
She was a tsunami survivor. It's horrible the pain she describes she was in due to all the broken bones and cuts. But it's more than obvious that her greater pain was Simon's death.
It's very amazing how she still found good things out of a disaster like this. She says that this just made her realize how in times of desperation and pain, people help others without even having to speak the same language. Petra started to help Thailand's victims.
In conclusion, Petra Nemcova tells us the story of love between her and Simon. I really recommend this book. I read it in two days. You can read it in one if you want. Please don't miss it. It's written so beautifully. It's also very very moving. One of the things I learned with this book is not to take things or life too seriously and just live for the moment; you never know what can happen. One minute you're as happy as you can be (like Petra and Simon were, minutes before the tsumani hit) and the next minute you can lose it all.
vgxoxo@hotmail.com
Thank you Petra.......2006-03-17
This is one of the most touching and sincere books I've ever read. I'm from Thailand and would like to thank Petra for writing this book. Also thank to all readers for your love and care for my people. I love you.
Very moving.......2006-01-30
During such a horrific experience Petra writes with love and a positive outlook at life. This was a nice easy read, I read it in two sessions. For what this woman experienced I am amazed at her healthy, happy out look toward life. You feel as if you know her on a personal level after you put this book down, and you feel her sadness, grief and pain she went through. However it doesn't leave you with a sinking feeling of sadness, it leaves you with an appreciation of life and the simple gifts we encounter every day. It's inspirational. She has an enormous heart.
Book Description
The latest in the New York Times bestselling series! The Politically Incorrect Guide to Women, Sex and Feminism is the perfect antidote to the lies told in boardrooms, locker rooms, and universities that are brainwashing young women every day.
Customer Reviews:
Carrie, please don't write anymore books........2007-10-11
Carrie obviously has no clue whatsoever what a feminist is. Feminism never caused women to be disposable sex objects. The idea that women are disposable sex objects is not a new phenomenon- it has been going on since long before feminism became mainstream. To blame feminism on it is ignorant and uninformed. Maybe she should have picked up a history book before writing a book herself.
Not bad even with poor sourcing and lost opportunities (3.5 stars).......2007-09-25
The "Politically Incorrect Guide to Women, Sex and Feminism" was the fourth book in that series, whose aim is supposedly to counter liberal bias in the media.
The book's essential argument is that women today have been duped by radical feminists into believing that they were the same as men and that they should aim for the traditional goals of family and a married life. The book, unlike most other Politically Incorrect Guides, does a very good job in this respect. It gives some quite reasonable statistic about how women who marry are happier than those who do not, and that there are a great many dangers from the casual sex so much supported by Sixties liberals. It also shows that many women do not want to work outside the home and that few are happier because of having to do so.
It also, though not to the extent that might be desired, shows that there is a lot of scientific evidence for innate sex differences. It is a pity that these biological differences are not related to societal considerations because there simply cannot exist doubt that belief in sexual identity is triggered by situations like those in Europe today where valuable resources are non-existent. In fact, the effects of these societal situations on sex roles may well explain why women in Europe or Canada probably do not have the same desire as women in the US. (The book never considers differences between the US and other countries and this constitutes a big fault of the whole PIG series that greatly dims its potential).
The book also has one strange lost opportunity because during Europe's own "culture war" during the early twentieth century - as shown by the childhoods of many people born back then like Simone de Beauvoir or Albino Luciani - women were far more socially conservative than men. Indeed, as a student of personality theory I know very well that this would be expected and it is a pity Carrie Lucas fails to even think of this possibility. The radical left's argument for extreme masculinisation of women (already achieved in Europe), for all its ability to permit social change with otherwise impossible ease, has great drawback on a personal level. Women who are as individualistic and independent as the Left wish generally have great trouble raising children because they lack the ability to relate on an emotional level. They are also often, as my own personal experience as well as surveys shows, very unhappy because they tend to be very angry.
Whilst there are few unsound arguments, one needs much better sourcing to verify most of them, and as with the guide to Capitalism, these are largely absent. Still, even for those on the Left, this book offers many sound arguments and is by far the best in the PIG series. Real rating would be 3.5 stars out of five - women is the topic on which the Right is most effective because it is most scientific there.
IT NEEDED TO BE SAID.......2007-09-21
I wish this book would've been around when I was in my 20's. I enjoyed reading a more balanced approach to feminism. Lukas is not anti-woman, stuck in the '50's, or patriarchal as her critics have described. She's not telling women what they can or cannot do either. She's done her research and put the fact out there for your review. The biggest drawback for me was that it looks like a 3rd grader proofread the book.
Finally, a voice of reason.......2007-09-03
I must start off by confessing that I haven't had the chance to read the book yet, but from everything I've heard about it, and reading all the other comments here, it's safe to say that this book presents a viewpoint that is much needed in our society today to balance out the heavy-handed feminism that's shoved down our throats at every turn.I'd like to see every feminist stop for one moment and consider this: What feminism basically teaches is that there is no real value being "just" a woman, that our only worth comes about when we ignore our natural nurturing and nesting instincts and push ourselves to be more like men. On the other hand, those with more traditional beliefs see the indispensible contribution that we offer as wives, mothers, and women, and honor and appeciate us for the intelligence, skill, and creativity it takes to efficiently take on the business of running a home. The other issue with feminism is its complete hypocrisy. If a woman says she wants her man to pamper and spoil her and treat her like a queen, she deserves it and is encouraged to demand he treat her that way. But if a man dares to confess that he longs for his wife to spoil him and treat him like the king of his castle, he's just a big, fat sexist jerk. If a woman wants to go out with her girlfriends, well, she needs her "me-time" and it's her Goddess-given right, but if he wants to relax and play golf with his buddies on Saturday, he's a selfish brute who's ignoring her needs. Or if she helps him with something he typically does, she expects him to be endlessly patient and understanding in her attempts in ufamiliar territory, and bow down to kiss her feet in gratitude for her assistance, but if she asks for his help with something, she'll nitpick if it's not done to her perfect standards, and barely says "thank you" because he ought to be doing those things anyway. Not to mention the poor guy who works hard all day, and comes home to a wife who expects him to do "his equal share" of the work around the house, even if she stays home or works only part-time. Just some food for thought...
Another great book in the PIG series.......2007-08-31
It is unfortunate that it takes a whole book to point out several rather simple inconvenient truths: women and men are (gasp!) different from each other, that sexual promiscuity in women has led to MORE, not less, sexual exploitation and that marriage DOES have a role to fill in society (and not simply to form an economical unit).
My favorite part is a sidebar in the book called "Lifetime Television's Line-up of Fear," which lists three typical movies aired by that channel with their description. I remember Lifetime and what I used to call "Lifetime's Man-Hating Movie of the Month." "Tonight on Lifetime: 'I Married a Stinking MAN!' A small-town woman is exploited by a male in an unhealthy relationship called a marriage. When the man attempts to convince her to allow herself to become biological host to some sort of growth ("preganancy") she eventually detaches herself from her right-wing, homophobic "husband," goes to law school, becomes and honorary lesbian and is eventually appointed a Supreme Court Justice by President Bill Clinton. Starring Jessica Simpson and Ted Danson."
Lukas does an excellent job in explaining the conservative viewpoint on sex and feminism and yes, you can be pro-woman without being a feminist regardless of what the media says.

Temptation Resisted.......2000-03-31
I was very tempted to buy this book on a recent visit to Istanbul. I did not because I consider myself a novice birdwatcher. As such, I am accustomed to the layout and information contained in Audobon or Peterson guides. Therefore, this book did not have enough pictures and identification tips for my particular needs.
Based on what I absorbed while trying to decide whether or not to succumb to temptation, this book is probably useful to a more experienced birder. The focus of the information is on where the birds can be found. The size was convenient. The maps were clear, although I have no personal information as to their accuracy. I had not previously encountered a bird book with black and white line drawings of birds and found that curious. The colored illustrations were attractive but too limited for my needs.
If you are a more experienced birder with a particular interest in this region, this book would be very useful in planning a birding trip and as a companion to a field guide. I recommend purchasing the book before travelling to Turkey. I found the book in two of the English language bookstores in Istanbul and it was fairly expensive.
