4 out of 5 stars Nice look back at 50's ads.......2007-01-12

This is a Japanese book (seemingly for a Japanese audience) on American fashion ads from the 50's era . The ads are reproduced as close to full size as possible and are shown in original colors and are lovely. There is no commentary on the ads to tell you why these ads are interesting, significant, or representative, but the ads themselves are fun to read and look at. Would have given 5 stars had there been discussion. Great library find, but not so much a buy unless you just want the ads.

these throw backs to the 70's "Star Trek" comics are great. sure the stories are silly but these are great fun and my two boys will sit in my lap and have me read these to them all the time. Does it get any better!

5 out of 5 stars More Retro Star Trek Comics from Gold Key.......2005-12-16

In this collection we see Kirk vs. Kirk, yet another twin story. The "Ice Journey","The Mimicking Menace","The Final Truth" and a few more 70's classics. If you don't mind some of the leaps in logic, they are fun to read. Kirk does not look like Shatner in this collection. There are a few panels that bear a passing resemblance to him. However it is hard to capture his likeness because Shatner has no outstanding features other than his round nose and high forehead.

Some of the stories are outrageous and I have to believe that Irwin Allen's sci fi high concept shows at the time might have influenced the plots. If you remember Lost in Space, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and Land of Giants were in syndication at some local stations. That is all sci fi fans had to look at if the budget was over $1.98. I have to look back and whince sometimes at what Irwin Allen got away with on his TV shows. If you saw the first three or four episodes of each series then you saw them all. The plots and stories endlessly repeated.

All I have to say is I am very glad Irwin never got the chance to produce Star Trek! Mr. Spock would have been red with giant ears.

On to the comic collection; if you don't take it too seriously, it brings back a lot of memories. I'd only recommend it if you had seen them before back in the seventies. The plots and stories do not hold up. But the message is clear to the heart of the show.

    Book Description

Avast, ye scurvy dogs and saucy wenches! The Pirate Guys - Mark "Cap'n Slappy" Summers and John "Ol' Chumbucket" Baur - were as surprised as anyone when their idea for Talk Like a Pirate Day went around the world in just two years. In 2003 more than 19 million people on seven continents took part in the fun. The Pirate Guys have been seen and heard on CNN, National Public Radio, the BBC, Radio Ireland, and plenty more radio stations and newspapers around the globe.

Now they share their booty of pirate lore and high seas hijinks in Well Blow Me Down. With an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winner Dave Barry, the Guys tell the how and why of talking like pirates in a "drop-dead funny" book that will shiver your timbers and make any landlubber swagger with pirattitude.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Yaaaarrgh!.......2005-09-23

Baur and Summers had no great motive for inventing a holiday, as they explain succinctly in Chapter Two: "Talking like a pirate is fun. It's really that simple." And to help readers engage in as much fun as possible, they have devised the parameters of Pirattitude, the state of mind needed to squeeze the most juice from the day. The definition and test for Pirattitude waits in Chapter Three. Then, in Chapter Four, you can try your hand at a brief test of pirate trivia to prove if you know the name of Blackbeard's ship (was it Queen Anne's Revenge or Sissybritches?) and if a proper slug of grog contains rum or Sprite as a primary ingredient. Trust me, the test isn't very hard.

OK, now we get to the meat of the book. You wanna talk like a pirate? You gotta know the lingo. And these guys want to help you, although they readily admit their research "involved more beer and pizza than actually looking things up." So get ready to pepper your speech with everything from "avast" to "barnacle," from "lubber" to "wench," from "booty" to "salmagundi." And, once you know the words, these scurvy sea dogs help you still more by describing ways to put your new vocabulary to work at home, school, work, church and pretty much anywhere else you might find yourself. (They even provide the very helpful warning that "most women do not consider the phrase 'Prepare to be boarded!' an adequate substitute for foreplay.")

To fill out the book (because it really is pretty slim, after all) the two rum-soaked bilge rats (see how I cunningly weave these piratical words into my text?) provide the lyrics to a new pirate song, biographical tidbits about some real, honest-to-gosh pirates as well as some who exist only on the silver screen, a personality test to determine your level of pirattitude, an advice column and a peek at Baur and Summers' secret ambition.

That's it. That's all there is to it. Well Blow Me Down! is a funny, silly book by two silly, funny men who had nothing to do so they created a modern phenomenon. So don't forget to celebrate Mark's ex-wife's birthday each year by indulging the wee pirate that's in us all!

Shiver me timbers! Ye should be weighin' anchor, raisin' the Jolly Rodger, and plunderin' this tome or ye be a scurvy bilge rat. We need to be helping Cap'n Slappy & Ol' Chumbucket.

Do you have Pirattitude? Learn how to talk like a pirate and bring out your inner Pirate. Witty and funny. Hysterical even. And a little educational, too (but it's not Mark & John's fault). An absolute MUST if you plan to celebrate "Talk Like a Pirate Day" (September 19th). http://www.talklikeapirate.com/ Not too bad for 2 guy who really weren't trying to create a world wide phenomenon - but did.

Ok now an English translation.... Nah. Buy the book and figure it out for yourself. You'll be glad you did.

I laughed at everything in this book! I heard about these guys on the radio last year and had a blast celebrating talk like a pirate day on September 19th. I loved the pirate quizzes and all the fun pirate lingo. This September I look forward to calling my boss "a scurvy bilge rat " and telling him to "dance the hempen jig" and other fine phrases found in, "Well Blow Me Down." I laughed so hard I cried when I read the last chapter where the Pirate Guys dream of winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Pure fun!

    Book Description

How did it happen that in a time when networks were run by Jewish men, and many television shows were written by Jewish writers, there were so few identifiably Jewish characters on television? In his provocative book, David Zurawik marshalls compelling evidence to suggest that, during television's first thirty-five years, its primarily Jewish power brokers actively suppressed Jewish characters and Jewish themes from appearing on the small screen.

Beginning his investigation in the early days of television with Gertrude Berg and The Goldbergs, Zurawik, an award-winning journalist, shows how the Jewish founders of the three major networks--William S. Paley (CBS), David Sarnoff (NBC), and Leonard Goldenson (ABC)--dictated the kinds of shows Americans would watch from the late 1940s until they sold their broadcast empires in the mid-1980s. Under the auspices of these incredibly powerful men, the television industry either distorted or eliminated entirely images of Jews from prime time at the very moment when television came to hold center stage in mainstream American life. In fact, creating a cookie-cutter image of American life was so important to the top Jewish executives that they fabricated a brief, which circulated among the networks and became legendary in the industry. It claimed that CBS had "research" that indicated Americans were not interested in seeing Jews (or divorced people, people from New York, and men with mustaches) on the small screen. Zurawik convincingly argues that Paley and the others were ambivalent about their own Jewishness, and fearful, in the post-Holocaust, pro-assimilation, red-baiting 1950s, that their shows not appear "too Jewish." The ironic result: with few exceptions, shows like Father Knows Best and Leave It to Beaver came to represent American family life, while Jewish identity was presented as something that had to be obscured or hidden away.

Only when the moguls sold their interest in the networks and moved on did things begin to change in a sustained way. Serious shows with leading Jewish characters began to appear in series like thirtysomething and Northern Exposure, which dealt with issues of tolerance, intermarriage, and assimilation. But in many of the programs that followed, particularly the sitcoms of the 1990s, Jewish men and especially Jewish women fell into stereotypical roles that Zurawik describes as "nebbishy boyfriends lusting after non-Jewish women" or "Jewish-American princesses and smothering mothers." And, although Jewish characters are now plentiful on television, many are very nominally Jewish, or Jewish in name only. Despite the best efforts of the successors of Paley, Sarnoff, and Goldenson, the culture of Jewish self-consciousness and censorship lives on in network television today.

Based on more than one hundred interviews gathered over ten years with network executives, producers, and actors, Zurawik's book gives voice to these insiders--who reveal, for the first time, how and why the depiction of Jews on television has followed such a strange, unpredictable course.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Jews of Prime Time--fine book.......2003-11-30

'The Jews of Prime Time' is a fine analysis of Jewish characters in prime time television going all the way back to The Goldbergs in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Zurawik shows how few Jewish characters there have been, notes that between 1955 and 1972 there were virtually no such characters, and describes how many of the characters reflect stereotypes about Jews, many of them negative. Particularly interesting is his analysis of the virtually complete absence of marriages between Jews--almost every marriage involving a Jewish character since the 1970s has been an intermarriage. What's especially remarkable is that all this took place when a high proportion of network and production company writers, producers, directors, and executives were Jewish. Thus, The Jews of Prime Time shows that television was like the movies--Jews were very important as creators of the medium and played a great role in its development, but were so ambivalent about their own Jewishness, and so fearful of anti-Semitism, that their impact on the image of Jews in the U.S. may very well have been negative. And this is not just a matter of history, either. There are few positive portrayals of Jews even today, and, ironically, the entry of more Jewish women into responsible position in television may be associated more with the reinforcement of negative stereotypes about Jewish women than with undermining them.
This is a serious book, published by a university press, but that shouldn't scare anyone off. It's easy to read, the narrative carries the reader along, and it's fun reading the inside story of an aspect of television history--even if the story is depressing in some ways. I read it in a day.

The Cambridge Companion to Brass Instruments provides an overview of the history of brass instruments, and their technical and musical development. Much of the volume is devoted to the way brass instruments have been used in classical music, but there are also important contributions on the ancient world, non-Western music, vernacular and popular traditions and the rise of jazz. The editors are two of the most respected names in the world of brass performance and scholarship, and the list of contributors includes the names of many of the world's most prestigious scholars and performers.

On one level this is disappointing compared with, say, the Oxford companions to various subjects, being a series of detailed essays that leave large gaps between them. But taken along with Baines's classic, it documents a lot of significant stuff, notably the role of brasswinds in avant garde music. Don't buy it first -- but do buy it second (if only because this is a field whose entire available English-language literature is feweer than a dozen books)

All the infomation is in full color and in-character, much like the first 100 pages of the basic rulebook. Most of the info found here has been expanded in other books (particularly Stellar Frontier and the Alien Encounter adventure series), but it's still very cool as a player handout.

In this book the author reviews many IDEAS involving LEAPS but in my opinion none of them are covered in enough detail to stand alone as full fledged strategies.

For example the topic of using LEAPS as a substitute for stocks in a covered call strategy only gets maybe 8 or 9 pages in this book. I have read other books where almost 100 pages are devoted to this strategy alone.

The author is also flat out wrong about one thing:

Page 251...."Many index options, however, are traded using the European Style rules. Under that system, positions cannot be closed or sold before expiration"

            Oops I hope that's just a typo.

3 out of 5 stars Worth owning, but not for beginners........2007-01-03

While this book provides a lot of strategies, a lot of the strategies are just very close variations of other strategies. The strategies overlap significantly. The book seems to repeat itself a lot. I believe it contains a few errors and makes some major oversimplifications. For those reasons, this book is not for the novice investor.

It's worth the price, because you will find something in this book that will make money for you.

5 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT book!.......2005-01-08

Only one word adequately describes this book:- "EXCELLENT!"

The author not only describes, in detail, and, with numerous examples for clarity, all the advantages of using LEAPS in your investment program, but he also goes into details of the negative aspects, or the downside, of each of these strategies.

Unlike many other books on the subject of options, Mr. Thomsett discusses their use from the perspective of the small investor (using 100 share lots) and not, as in various other publications, institutionally sized lots of 40-50 options (which is 4-5000 shares each time).

In order to obtain the full benefit from this book though, you need to be already conversant with trading options.

A good entry point for this would be a previous book of his:- "Getting Started in Options", or, even better, my personal favorite:- "Using Options to Buy Stocks" by Dennis Eisen.

Perhaps the only fault with the book is the point that it really should have been published in hard cover, thereby better allowing it to stand up to the heavy use that it will undoubtedly receive.

            5 out of 5 stars Eye-opening info -- great organization........2004-07-12

The book shows great strategys for long term option investing. Makes it easy and simple. Anyone who knows options will like Leaps because the strategys are much more flexible. Highly recommend the book as user friendly and useful. I am going to use a lot of the things like using Leaps instead of jsut buying stocks. Good stuff!

            Book Description

When Diane Wilson, fourth-generation shrimp-boat captain and mother of five, learns that she lives in the most polluted county in the United States, she decides to fight back. She launches a campaign against a multibillion-dollar corporation that has been covering up spills, silencing workers, flouting the EPA, and dumping lethal ethylene dichloride and vinyl chloride into the bays along her beloved Texas Gulf Coast. In an epic tale of bravery, Wilson takes her fight to the courts, to the gates of the chemical plant, and to the halls of power in Austin. Along the way she meets with scorn, bribery, character assassination, and death threats. Finally Wilson realizes that she must break the law to win justice: She resorts to nonviolent disobedience, direct action, and hunger strikes. WilsonÂ's vivid South Texas dialogue resides somewhere between Alice Walker and William Faulkner, and her dazzling prose brings to mind the magic realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, replete with dreams and prophecies.

5 out of 5 stars One person shining a light in the darkness makes a difference.......2007-01-29

With the discovery that her "piddlin' little county on the Gulf Coast" led the nation in toxic emissions, Diane Wilson fought friends, family, local politicians, corrupt state regulators, legislators, senators, and the multi-billion dollar company Formosa Plastic. This leader of Taiwan's petrochemical industry had environmental practices so appalling that twenty thousand Taiwanese came out under threat of police violence to protest its proposed new $8 billion dollar complex. That's how Formosa decided to shift its operations to Texas. Texas was willing to give Formosa $200 million in subsides and to look the other way on environmental violations for it's proposed $1.3 billion expansion of its PVC manufacturing facility in Calhoun County, Texas.

Diane wanted to know why in her small community "a man could make the arrest column in the local newspaper any day of the week for running his truck with expired license plates or no insurance, but let a chemical company, half a mile wide and with a thousand unknown chemicals zipping through their pipes, release eighty tons of a baby-aborting chemical into his neighbor's backyard, and it would be lucky if it made a note in a report. The plant manager sounded startled over the phone. "Good God!" he said. "Of course we can't put that type of information in the paper. Do you want old Mister Weaver across the street to have a heart attack?" " (p. 250)

Vinyl chloride monomer is one of the worst cancer-causing chemicals in the world.
"It's so hazardous the government says you're in violation if a single pound is released. But here seventy-four tons of vinyl chloride was released within one mile of an elementary school right across the road from Point Comfort. And if that wasn't enough, Formosa, in the same breath they were polluting with, asked the state to permit a tenth reactor while the ninth was violating production permits. You tell me the state is getting it? You exceed permits and you're rewarded with more?" (p.186)

Maybe all this had something to do with Formosa giving campaign funds to U.S. Senator Gramm, who appointed his former campaign advisor to the head of EPA Region 6, and who was now the final authority on Formosa's penalty and all their permits.

"The commission decided that even though Formosa's fine warranted something in the seven-figure bracket, they would calculate it thirty times lower, and although Formosa continued to violate their wastewater permit on a daily basis into a body of water they had already degraded, the state would allow the waste water permit and violations to continue.
It wasn't the Water Commissions fault, Chairman Bucko said. The blame lay squarely with the federal agencies who prevented the Water Commission from dealing appropriately with the environmental issues at Formosa. Maybe now the agencies would back off their demand for a comprehensive environmental impact statement and let the state regulatory process work." (p. 208)

            5 out of 5 stars Pure Dynamite!.......2006-06-22

I found Diane's use of local dialect when "she" is talking, and standard prose elsewhere, a delightful aspect of this book. The local dialect is what one hears in the Texas Coast fishing communities, and it evokes an incredible feeling of time and place. The reader feels the salt spray right along with her.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Story Excitingly Written .......2006-02-26

Diane Wilson is not only an unreasonable woman she is an outstanding human being. She is a reluctant hero, the most authentic kind. She eventually stands up for her native waters, mother earth and the very survival of the human race.

Doing something doesn't necessarily mean you can write well about it. In this case, Diane writes in her own authentic and electrifying voice. Her story rings true and reads like the most exciting fiction. I recommend this book to anyone who loves nature, adventure or just plain good reading.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo This Heroine and Great Story Teller.......2005-12-22

What a pleasure to read this story of an amazing and heroic woman, giving it all to take down giants. Ms Wilson's Marquez-like writing style and choice of words leaves me breathless and imagining I'm there with her as her mission lays itself at her feet and she picks it up and takes it on. Bravo! An absolutely wonderful read.

            5 out of 5 stars One person CAN make a difference . . . .......2005-12-05

It took me about 2 weeks to read this book. Not because it was that bad . . .but because it was that good.

I wanted to experience every moment as Diane Wilson took on the mighty Formosa plastics giant, fought corruption all the way to Washington, went on hunger strikes, traveled 1/2 way around the world and finally made a significant dent in the pollution that was killing her beloved shrimping waters along the Texas Gulf Coast.

Diane Wilson made a difference. With this book, the world can now read about it . . . from her own pen, not ghost written and packaged for a "target market." Her voice is fresh, raw almost and it grabbed me from page 1 until the epilogue.

Kudos to Wilson. Wish there were more like her.

            Enjoy!

            Book Description

The storming of Badajoz was an epic action which involved Wellington’s infantry in some of the most savage hand-to hand fighting of the whole Peninsular War. At appalling cost in a nightmare assault during the night of the 6 April 1812, Wellington’s soldiers hacked their way over the bodies of their dead and wounded and through the huge medieval walls of the town. These were held with great tenacity, skill and courage by a resolute French and German garrison. Having stormed the town the battle-crazed army went berserk and the horrors of the sacking which followed, as much as the sublime courage of the attackers, have passed into legend.

5 out of 5 stars Fletcher is THE modern authority on the Peninsular War.......2001-02-23

Not to take anything away from Jac Weller, who wrote some of my favorite books about Wellington, but Ian Fletcher does spend a significant portion of each year leading battlefield tours around Spain, has written numerous books about the Peninsula War specifically, and has made as his primary business the study of this period of the Napoleonic conflict. For purposes of writing the Osprey Campaign Series title about this battle there is nobody better suited.

Fletcher's battlefield descriptions are up to date as he traces out the location of every British battery in relation to contemporary landmarks along with photographs detailing key points of interest. The level of detail is exactly what one has come to expect from the Osprey Campaign Series and, in addition to Badajoz, the seige of Ciudad Rodrigo is also covered in this title.

For a greater level of detail than this title permits read "In Hell Before Daylight", also by Ian Fletcher.

In a fast-moving and incisive narrative, Roger Buckley traces the evolution of the Asia-Pacific region from the surrender of Japan in 1945 to the present day. His perspective is from that of the United States, the main player in the region since the end of the First World War and he explores its policies through its relationship with the Soviet Union, China and, importantly, with Japan during occupation and beyond. As an expert in international relations, Buckley examines the subject from a geopolitical and military point of view.

In a fast-moving and incisive narrative, Roger Buckley examines America's close and continuous relationship with the Asia-Pacific region from the end of the Pacific War to the first days of the Presidency of George W. Bush. The author traces the responses of the United States government to the major crises in the area through the Cold War decades and the initial post-Cold War years. He demonstrates how the US sought to maintain its dominant regional position through a series of security alliances and its own political, military and economic strengths. Professor Buckley examines the subject from geopolitical perspectives to provide a gateway to the understanding of a complex region certain to be of global importance in the twenty-first century.

The nations of the Pacific Basin - in East and Southeast Asia, Australasia, the Pacific islands and the Americas - make up the world's largest economic zone, and its most culturally diverse region. In recent years its Asian 'Tiger Economies' have suffered economic collapse and unfinished business from the Cold War has produced continuing conflict and instability. This new edition of The Pacific Basin Since 1945, 2e traces the postwar inter-relationships of all the rim and island nations and gives a unique impression of the make-up of the region, and the tensions within it. The book integrates a wide range of information from books and articles; from published and unpublished sources, including recently opened Russian and American archives; and from the first-hand experiences of participants, including those of the author, in Pacific Basin affairs. Vigorously written and strongly argued, no other account brings together all the threads of the development of international relations in this complex and fascinating region.
