Book Description
Sight and Spirituality in Early Netherlandish Painting examines the importance of vision as a narrative and thematic concern in works by artists such as Jan van Eyck, Petrus Christus, and Roger van der Weyden. Bret Rothstein argues that their paintings invited the viewer to demonstrate a variety of mental skills. Depicting religious visual experience, these works alluded to the imperceptibility of the divine and implicated the viewer’s own experience as part of a larger spiritual and intellectual process. Rothstein demonstrates how and why the act of seeing became a highly valued skill, one to be refined and displayed, as well as a source of competition among both artists and patrons.

Dangerously, seductively attractive, the femme fatale's unique magnetism has drawn everyone from nineteenth-century writers to 1960's filmmakers. Her impact can also be seen in style icons such as Jean Harlow and Brigitte Bardot. Until now, however, this archteype's influence on fashion has been unrecognized. This Special Edition of Fashion Theory covers topics ranging from fashion and the white savage in the Parisian music hall to weaponizing the femme fatale, and offers the first detailed account of this enduringly fascinating figure's style legacy.

Book Description
Shagging in the Carolinas is a history of dance, romance, and the New South. The Shag defied social conventions as carefree white teenagers were inspired by the possibilities inherent in improvisational black dance and music. This is the story of how Southern society's emerging middle class embraced its multicultural roots while its political leaders continued to debate and deny the outcome of the Civil War.
These are the unique people and circumstances that nurtured the evolution of Shag and Beach Music at places like the jump joints of Carolina Beach, the inland lake retreats, and the pavilions of Ocean Drive, Atlantic, Folly, Wrightsville, and Tybee beaches. With lively music and dancers, the Shag was popular at famous dance clubs, teen canteens, and armories. Venues such as the Coachman and IV, the Cellar, the Bushes, the Embers Clubs, and the Beach Club at Myrtle Beach are captured within these pages. The early pioneers and iconoclasts of dancing brought about a cultural revolution, embodied today by the many societies, competitions, and innumerable entertainers and bands that continue the Beach Music tradition.

Long on visuals, short on substance........2007-05-14
Mr. Hook has created a fun book here, but don't pick it up for the writing. The strengths of this book lie in its collection of hundreds of vintage photographs of the era outlined, stretching all the way back to the Twenties. Whatever text is to be found is only in the captions - that's all. There isn't much of a narrative or a historic context lent to shagging found in the caption of these photos. Were the beach scenesters rich? Working class? Complying with segregation or resisting it? Seen as rebels and hooligans or good kids having a good time? What of the bands playing the scene - was there a living to be made? National success or regional heroes? Caption reading makes it hard to tell. Folks with nostalgia for the Carolinas' beach scene, however, will find these photos to be real treasures, well worth the purchase price. If you love Southern beach life, it's a treat to get a picture of how it used to be.

Shagging for America takes a twist on the all of the "Girls Guides" that are being sold by taking the mans perspective. This is a must have for any man who wants to cut through the red tape on dating, and achieve what every guy is really looking for. This is what every man is thinking, but does not say in this politically correct environment..

Hating Across America.......2001-09-07
Is Priest's homosexuality the cause or effect of mysoginy of this degree? He complains of shallowness (higher levels of prostitution) applied by his prey yet pens his manifesto with mention of Manhattan, and Southampton residences (trophies). In addition to his homosexuality (not that there is anything wrong with that)Priest lacks the intellectual prowess to capture this irony, or appreciation that as higher mamals we live beyond our glandular reactions (there is more to a heterosexual relationship or even encounter than putting something in a hole). Many personal nuances are so blatantly European as to cause the reader to question the originality of much of this material. Shameless whining reveals a skill set suitable for a career in personal injury law or insurance sales.
As a women, I hate to admit that the book is really funny.......2001-07-02
One afternoon visiting my family in the Burbs, I hear my boyfriend and dad crack-up together non-stop, they were red in their faces and could hardly breath. Nosy me wanted to know what was going on and I found them huddled together reading the Shagging for America book. They made a big secret out of it and other silly stuff boys do but eventually I got my hands on their dirty little secret. Although, I didn't want to like the jokes and humor, the book is pretty funny. Girls, if you ever wondered if guys really only want our bodies, the answer is YESSSSSSS!!! Just kidding of course but the book does put a hillarious spin on all the male-female dating clichees.
Yes, it's crude, rude and obnoxious but..........2001-06-30
it's also funny as hell. If you're a guy in your late teens to late 30's, you'll love this book. I laughed myself silly and the cartoons absolutely rule!!! Even my wife (who's over 35, by the way) admitted that it's pretty funny, however, I hear not all women would agree with that. But then again, who asked them in the first place...
Shagging for America.......2001-05-10
Finally, an incredibly honest and funny book for "real men" about what concerns them most-Women. Sam Priest shamelessly guides us through the minefield of dating in America today, exposing what men realy want (in case you don't already know) and more importantly, how to get it. A new front has opened in the battle between the sexes. If you have a sense of humor you'll love this book. If you're a woman, you may not, but you'll still get plenty of ammunition to fight with.
Hilarious Sophisticated Guide to Getting Laid!.......2001-05-02
There is only one word for this book-- HILARIOUS! There is also another one--mysoginist. The author makes Patrick Bateman look like a feminist!
I especially liked the "Definition of eternity" (the time between your coming and her going); the chapter "If She Won't Take her Clothes off, Take Yours Off" and "Never tell a Woman You Love Her Even If you Don't"
"Shagging on the Cheap" and "Everything is Deniable" were also very funny.
Buy the book but don"t let your girlfriend see it. She'll kill you!

A great book to read.......2003-12-03
If you like Electronic Music, this is the perfect book to read
My Friends All Want to Borrow It!.......2002-07-25
Fascinating and quick read. This book is great for anyone with an intrest in the electronic music history and/or anyone trying to get started. The Evolution/history of electronic music section is wonderful and explaines a lot. The coolest part is the definitions of electronic music genres. Ever wonder what the heck"gabba techno", "old school/old skool", "hardcore", "diva house", "dub", "goa trance", or "bhangra" is? Thankfully, I finally know the distinctions.
There are also sections on history of electronic instruments, gear, getting started djing or creating electronic music, promotion, the internet, and artist interviews.
A great resource and quite interesting.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I found a few typos. Oops!

THE classic openings work.......2003-05-30
No, it is not an opening treatise; but What's the Best Move just might teach you more about openings than any other general openings work in the whole literature of chess. I found this book in my favorite used/overstock store, misplaced in the sports section instead of in the chess section. Several times I looked through it, and foolishly put it aside because it only dealt with 1. e4 openings, and most of these were things like the Ponziani, the Kings's Gambit, the Two Knights, etc. I figured that if I wasn't playing these openings, I wouldn't get anything out of this book. Finally, however, upon seeing the good review here and seeing favorable mentions elsewhere, I took a chance on this book, and going through it has been an eye-popping experience. Evans brings you through several moves of an opening, giving you choices of three moves to pick at various spots. In the back are detailed explanations of why certain moves were wrong, and of which one was right. The explanations are incredible. They are lucid, poingnant, and highly instructive. The next diagram will show the same opening a little further on, and ask you to pick a move. White or black may not have played the right continuation up to that point, and you know this from reading the answers to the previous quiz. Thus, you start to recognize the appropriate setup in these various openings. What is even better is that the answers ulitmately have little do with the opening in question; that is, the thinking process you go through is applicable to any opening at all, and this book changes the way you look at openings. Plus, the positions selected will inevitably occur frequently in your games. It is ultimately the unique and effective instruction technique that Evans uses here that makes the book so wonderful. I thought I was reasonably proficient at openings until I went through this book. I since have realized that I frequently chose the second or third best move. Evans has opened my eyes and re-dedicated me to the opening. I consider this book absolutely essential to the intermediate player who really wishes to improve not only his openings, but his analytical abilities. Finally, the book is incredibly enjoyable to go through. Working through it I got the same feeling I had going through The Amateur's Mind by Silman; that is, that the instructor was right there with me giving me personal lessons. You will be very grateful that you bought this book.
A classic.......2000-07-14
This book is a wonderful collection of problems taken from early stages of chess games (they are grouped by the openings in which they arise). You try to pick which of three options is the best move under the circumstances. Unlike most problem books, this one tests and teaches not just tactics but strategic/positional considerations. Evans's explanations and analyses of the right and wrong moves are superb. It's ridiculous that the book is out of print, but at this writing Chess Digest apparently still has a few copies in stock.

Good book to follow Econ 101 macro/micro.......2006-07-05
Required reading for my MBA program. A short but good story. Interesting. Read in one day.
Recommend this book, along with "naked economics: undressing the dismal science" by Charles Wheelan and "The Undercover Economist" by Tim Harford. These books provide interesting reading to help supplement learning about economics. All three books are more interesting than economics textbooks filled with charts, graphs, curves, shifts, etc.
Ricardo fan.......2006-06-30
The Choice is an easy read with big benefits. In this concise, well written narrative, Roberts explains one of the most important concepts in economics--the importance of free trade. Everyone in America should read this book.
Simple, Elegant and Wrong.......2005-07-27
Roberts' little fable pits a wholly benign free-trade against absolute protectionism and guess which one looks better. Based on the theories of David Ricardo, the fable assumes that every worker in the world is always treated fairly and every boss is kind and responsible. In The Choice there are no sweat shops and no corrupt CEOs. Fables like The Choice (or the "free-market economy" for that matter) are easy to believe because we want the world to be that simple. That's why the book is dangerous. The Choice has almost nothing to do with the real world, but it sounds good. The argument is so seamless that it appears almost unassailable. If you buy Roberts' version of Ricardo, however, you must accept Wal-Mart as the epitome of business virtue.
Roberts may be a great guy, and he certainly writes well. Unfortunately, his book begins with a series of fallacious premises and works its way toward a conclusion that is simple, elegant, and horribly wrong.
An absolute Must Read.......2005-03-23
Short, Fun, and easy to understand, this book is a must read for all audiences. Whether students struggling in Econ class, Teachers of Business school, or just evening news watchers who would like - for once - to understand the sentences that come after "Leading Economists are saying today . . ." I highly recommend buying two copies. You will definately want to recommend this one. A real eye opener for free-traders, and a wonderful teaching tool for those "in the know". Roberts nails it!
Superb Book.......2004-04-05
I'll make this as brief and simple as does Mr. Roberts. This is, without question, a superb book. It is the title to which I refer almost everyone interested in the free trade debate. Thank you, Russell Roberts.

"""Death is a funny thing. It brings out the best and worst in people. It casts light on the truth and makes life blindingly clear."" Her visions have helped solve crimes; her instincts have helped find missing people; she can predict future events and sense your thoughts. These are some of the extraordinary gifts that define the remarkable Allison DuBois, the real-life medium, wife, and mother whose life is the inspiration for the hit NBC television series Medium. When she was six years old, Allison's deceased great-grandfather came to her with a message for her mother: ""I am okay, I am still with you. Tell your mom there's no more pain."" Allison shared his comforting words with her mother and thus began a lifetime of creating connections between loved ones and those they have lost. The purpose of her gifts became clearer when Allison worked as an intern in the homicide bureau of the district attorney's office and found that she visualized the crime as she handled the evidence. Allison now works as a profiler on criminal investigations. In this stunning book, Allison shares fascinating stories of her encounters with people who have passed and her adventures as a profiler for various law enforcement organizations. With wit and compassion, Allison shows us what it is like to live with these special gifts and talents and also tells about her struggle to live a normal life as a devoted wife and mother. She shows how learning to accept her own gifts has helped her accept the unique gifts of others and how her compelling desire to relieve the pain of others has helped define her own life, a life committed to the search for ultimate truth. If you have ever questioned whether there is an afterlife, this book will help you see that there is a living energy beyond death. "

Kiss and Tell.......2007-07-07
I found the book interesting. I believe that Allison does indeed have a gift, but the writing and the subject matter was a little to immature for me. She spent too much time talking about how to help others and not enough time talking about herself and her experiences. Perhaps the next book (which I have) will be more of what I am looking for. I do enjoy the TV series.
Wonderful book for those who are grieving.......2007-07-05
Our daughter, age 31, died in 2001 from complications arising from multiple sclerosis. Even though we were "prepared" for her passing, and deeply believe in life after death, the grief was still at times unbearable.
Enter Allison DuBois and her honest and practical approach to life after death. The book is easily read. It does not attempt to convince you. This is her story. These are her experiences.
We have drawn solace from the book, and although the sadness of losing such a precious daughter will never dim, we have found another layer of peace and comfort. Now when the wind chimes sing and there is no wind, my husband and I smile.
Chapters 7 & 8 are worth the price x 10!.......2007-06-14
I had a difficult time getting into this book, but kept reading. Then chapter 7, 'Empathy' connected. Chapter 8 had me in tears, with an increased level of understanding.
Thank you, Ms. Debois. Understanding/closure is a welcome gift.
Preying on emotions..........2007-06-08
The only insight this woman has is that she can see that there are people out there desperate enough to believe that someone can actually communicate with dead people. If you have lost a loved one, I feel for you. I've been there myself. But if you want to invest money to keep the memory of your loved one alive, then start a foundation in the name of your loved one to fight the disease that they died from, or start a scholarship fund in the name of your loved one at their alma mater. Don't spend your money on this crazy hoodoo stuff.
Dont' Kiss them Goodbye.......2007-05-13

Book Description
The Algerian War 1954-62 was one of the most prolonged and violent examples of decolonization. Bringing to an end 132 years of French rule, the Algerian struggle caused the fall of six French prime ministers, the collapse of the Fourth Republic, and expulsion of one million French settlers. This volume, bringing together leading experts in the field, focuses on one of the key actors in the drama - the French army. They show that the Algerian War was just as much about conflicts of ideas, beliefs and loyalties as it was about simple military operations. In this way, the collection goes beyond polemic and recrimination to explore the many and varied nuances of what was one of the historically most important of the grand style colonial wars.
Customer Reviews:
Good Read but.............2007-07-12
It's been a long time coming, since A Horne's 'A Savage War Of Peace', but this new perspective on the Algerian war of independence 1954-62, while being contemporary in its demystification and breakdown of the ideologies and silence that have controlled the interpretation of this conflict, still left a lot to be desired.
The papers presented by Zervoudakis (From Indochina to Algeria), Shipway (Algeria and the official mind), Evans(The Harkis)and Rollet(Remembering the Algerian war) were excellent.
However the book was the product of a conference held at Salford University in 1996 and in a way this does excuse the intellectual indulgence and Anglo-Saxon perspective contained within many chapters of the book.
I think it would have been a lot more rewarding if the book had contained more commentary on the French military participants (Massu, Bigeard, Trinquier and Jean Pierre), rather than centre on media images, Gillo Pontecorvo's filmatic work 'The Battle Of Algiers' and the fictional character of Colonel Mattheiu. The title of the book, after all, was the the Algerian War And The French Army!
It doesn't beat Larteguy's 'The Centurions' for the nitty-gritty of a very ugly insurgent war and the motivations behind the French military participants, but it's a lot cheaper at $115 dollars and still is a great read.
Book Description
Concerned about the dangers of unchecked executive power, the Founding Fathers deliberately assigned Congress the sole authority to make war. But the last time Congress did so was in 1941, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harborsince then, every president from Harry Truman to George W. Bush has used military force in pursuit of imperial objectives without congressional authorization. In vivid detail, War Powers recounts this story of subversion from above. Drawing on congressional hearings, Supreme Court opinions, media reports, and scholarly accounts, legal historian Peter Irons examines how the Constitution has been stretched, distorted, and violated as presidents usurped a shared, solemn powereschewing congressional approval and often suspending civil liberties in the process. An insightful and rousing history, War Powers takes us up to the recent preemptive invasion of Iraq, offering a necessary account of our most pressing contemporary constitutional crisis.
Customer Reviews:
Who has the POWER to make WAR?.......2005-12-12
Political science professor (University of California - San Diego) Peter Irons poses to answer one question, "Why and how do we go to war?" "War Powers" is a clear and concise answer to the question that starts with exploring our country's humble beginnings, the framing of the U.S. Constitution (1787), to probing the background of George W. Bush's invasion of Iraq (2003).
The subtitle of Irons' book, "How The Imperial Presidency Hijacked The Constitution," is a precise foreshadowing of the book's contents. Irons' meticulous research, most notably the actions of presidents beginning with Franklin D. Roosevelt and on, are powerful reminders of how presidents have overstepped their constitutional powers. The author stresses Congress has only declared five wars as Congress continued to abdicate its constitutional war power while the presidency became increasingly imperial. Presidents Ford, Carter, Reagan, Clinton and both Bushs have all claimed an "inherent" right to initiate military action without prior congressional approval.
"War Powers" is valuable for it shows how the U.S. rose to its current position as the sole supreme power. But more importantly, the treatise is a warning and a call to return war-making powers "to their constitutional home in Congress, as the Framers intended." Irons shines light on the erosion of our country's foundation, which often has been completely dismissed by presidents like Franklin D. Roosevelt who stated, "The Constitution is just a piece of paper."

Good account of the evolution of Presidential Ceasarism.......2005-12-11
Mr. Irons presents a good history of the deterioration of our government's understanding of the war-making power, from the democratic mechanism enshrined in our Constitution by our Founding Fathers requiring Congressional authorization for war, to the dictatorial war-making powers claimed (and exercised) by modern day Presidents, and abetted by a supine Congress.
There should be no dispute that the Founding Fathers intended that Congress should initiate war and the President should merely prosecute it, until the Congress decides to conclude hostilities. James Madison said, "...those who are to conduct a war cannot in the nature of things, be proper or safe judges, whether a war ought to be commenced, continued or concluded. They are barred from the latter functions by a great principle in free government, analogous to that which separates the sword from the purse or the power of executing from the power of enacting laws". (pg 26) The Constitution spells out that intention with utter clarity, and it appears that the US government respected that provision until the Lincoln regime, when the old Constitutional order was finally overthrown, although technically Lincoln claimed he was suppressing a rebellion, rather than fighting a formal "war". Some may point to President Polk's instigation of the Mexican War as the point when this Constitutional balance was first challenged, but I would view Polk's military machinations as duplicitous, manipulative and certainly illegal, but not as a direct legal challenge to the war-declaring powers of Congress. A previous reviewer points to unilateral military actions on the part of Washington and Jefferson, but I'm not sure what he's referring to. In response to barbary piracy, Washington sent Congress a message saying that, "...it rests with Congress to decide between war, tribute and ransom as the means of re-establishing our Mediterranean commerce". (pg 30) Jefferson as well asked Congress in 1801 for_permission_to send warships to protect US ships from the Barbary pirates. (pg 42) Both Presidents made explicit declarations of Congressional supremacy in that regard. People may debate exactly when the Constitutional arrangement really started to fall apart, but I think it is pretty certain that it really first began to be challenged in the early 20th century, with Teddy Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson, etc. leading to the obscene modern spectacle of a whole string of Presidents explicitly declaring that they alone have the power of unleashing war on any country in the world.
It is almost unbelievable that there are men in a Democratic Republic, besides Ceasar-worshippers, dual loyalist war-mongers (neoconservatives) and arms dealers who would tolerate such an idea from an American Chief Executive, but such men exist in abundance today, in government, academia and opinion-shaping industries who not only tolerate such an idea but promote it for their own perverted ends. That's where I wish Mr. Irons would have expanded his topic- the reasons and motivations behind the mass acquiescence to a dictatorial power-grab by the Executive branch. Is it cowardice? Intimidation? Ignorance? I wish we could have heard some theories about this. Also, in his section on the curtailment of civil liberties during wartime, I wish he would have made mention of the great Sedition trials of WW II, but perhaps the story of those victims, being right wingers, don't register on the radar screens of left-wing professors. Also, Mr. Irons blames the ambiguity and toothlessness of the War Powers Resolution for continued Presidential defiance of the Constitution but I don't believe he made mention of the fact that the Supreme Court has actually struck down certain portions of the resolution. Apart from those quibbles, this is a very good book which liberty-loving citizens should read and act upon, if they value the freedoms bequeathed to us by our Founding Fathers and maintained, to varying degrees of success, by the blood, sweat and treasure of generations of patriots.
Nothing new.......2005-09-20
Irons tries to argue that the imperial presidency is somehow tied to American imperialism abroad. But he never makes his case; instead, he rants and raves about presidential actions he dislikes while ignoring those which contradict his view.
For example, he argues that presidents before Polk all followed to the letter the Constitution's grant of declaring war to Congress - no unilateral presidential war-making. But in fact, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both undertook military actions without the consent of Congress. Is there a difference between those small wars and others? Irons never tells us.
Irons doesn't uncover anything new or make any original arguments. Don't buy it.

Customer Reviews:
Black and white photos of birds.......1999-07-10
This book was rather disappointing in that all the wonderful pictures of birds were in black and white. The photographs were highly detailed with good descriptions of a wide variety of birds but it was difficult to visualize the birds' actual appearance due to the limitations of the non-color film.
